Mother’s Day Cancer Research Walk a Great Success

hat an amazing day everyone had. The sun was shining, the paramedics were there to watch over us and the Police and the cadets from Duntroon hovered protectively with the Padre completing the course with a bevy of ladies in company!!! The feeling was of enormous

warmth and fun combined with the spirit of community co-operation from Gympie, Cooloola Cove, Rainbow Beach, Tin Can Bay and visitors participating.

Gympie’s McGrath Nurse, Sharon was the first guest speaker followed by our local representative Councillor Mark McDonald and a one minute silence for those who

Our Turn as Tourists This is a special edition for us – our first newspaper completed whilst we are “on the road”. I am typing now from Mildura, as the kids settle in to bed in our cosy abode. All of the long, dry and dusty roads across NSW meant I managed lots of editing before the laptop batteries died each day.

Our travels are educating us how grateful parents can be when they encounter an awesome playground - and there are plenty around. Ones with rocket ship slides, massive climbing frames, or a brilliant one the kids will remember always - with a huge wooden maze, rope suspension walks, tall swings and all free. These are destination playgrounds - a tourism attraction all of its own; something our tourism bodies and chamber could consider?

A Memorial Tree was available for written dedications and dozens of pretty pink cards festooned the tree in remembrance. It was a blaze of Pink from babies to toddlers, little children ..teenagers....and all ages above, running walking and strolling.

The first to reach the final pink ribbon was Liam Window of Tin Can Bay running in approximately half an hour over the 6.5 kilometre course. Many walkers simply strolled and enjoyed the beautiful sunshine and pristine waters of the bay decked out in an assortment of pink finery of flowers ribbons feathers and bling! It was especially pleasing to see so many males walking looking dashing in their smart pink attire.

Many groups and organisations competed and dressed for the occasion. In the blur of a pink haze I recall The Dragon Boat ladies, The RSL John Moffat Pharmacies Staff, Curves from Gympie, Medical Transport, a flamboyant group of sassy ladies from Rainbow Beach, Staff of Raine and Horne The Craft group , The red hat ladies and that “Terrible Trio of Tedman Bailey and Ballard” warming up for their mammoth paddle for Prostate Cancer in october! Approximately three hundred people participated and

it may be a week before we have the final financial results back from Headquarters in the meantime we can assure supporters that it was above expectations and we hope to see the same people and more for Mother’s day next year!

Following the walk many raffles were held with donations from local businesses while participants enjoyed the Sausage Sizzle from the wonderful SES Members who plotted the course gave expert advice and toiled all in the name of cancer research.

The coffee man was in attendance and home-made doughnuts accompanied by huge platters of fresh fruits donated by the TCB Fruit shop. The IGA supplied drinking water and accompaniments for the Sausage sizzle and dozens of businesses supplied fancy items for the raffles. In particular the amazing pink patchwork quilt donated

by Pam Bauer and raffled on the day and won by the lucky Raine and Horne staffer making over one hundred dollars for this wonderful cause.

The organisers offer sincere thanks for the support received in the knowledge that all monies are channelled to all cancer research not just breast cancer and we can promise something special to look forward to on Mother’s Day 2014!!!

BAY TO BAY YACHT RACE

By Steven Campbell The Bay to Bay Yacht race did not start from the mouth of Snapper Creek this year.

It actually began from Ida Island off Skip Point because of the low winds. It was a slow sail up the mouth of the river, with

the yachts tacking left and right looking for the best winds just to make it out of the bay. This year’s race still had five classes but because there was a delayed start and low winds the classes started in two groups. The fastest class starting first and trailer sailor’s starting second.

Day two of the Bay to Bay started from Garry’s Anchorage, with the wind gust’s picking up to 15 to 20 knots southeast.

The boats got away to a faster start with sails filling up with thankful winds. The

boats made their way out to Stewart Island and then up the inside of Fraser Island. They worked their way back up to the top of Big Woody Island. The race finished at Harvey Bay Boat Club in Urangan Harbour. The Trophy winners were Bruce Nix, Graham Coffey, Chris Chapman, and George Owen. I would like to make a special thanks to Gary and Colleen Magyar for allowing me to photograph the race from their 44ft Catalina yacht “The Liberator”.

Double Island Point features on Music Video

One of the “hottest young performers” in country music has also become an ambassador for our region, with one of the jewels of the coast showcased in a recent video.

Newcastle singer/songwriter Morgan Evans, was awarded Country Music Channel’s New Oz Artist of the Year. With a number one single and number one video, Morgan has toured with Taylor Swift, Brooks & Dunn, Thirsty Merc, Shannon Noll, to name a few.

When asked why Double Island Point was chosen for the video, he said the “budget wasn’t massive” and he needed a location. Pete from Coolum’s Epic Films was booked for the shoot and he suggested we come to him.

“He’s a surfer, so am I - so he drove us up there in a big, old, sluggish 4WD. It took some time to get there!”

The video took only two trips up to the Point, “We shot a half day and then a full day. He says it is now “one of my favourite places in the world.”

The lyrics in While We’re Young is all about living in the moment and making the most of the time we have.

Double Island Point is definitely a great place for making memories. The video shows Morgan at Honeymoon Bay, strolling up to the Lighthouse and looking out from the headland. It’s breathtaking.

Seeing Double Island Point on film makes you realise just how special it is. The screen encompasses the Coloured Sands and Carlo Sandblow is clearly visible.

It won’t be long before Morgan is back in the region for the Gympie Music Muster.

He’s no stranger to the iconic event, he said, “The first time was just to go and experience it all.”

“Then I played a few. Last year I was on the Main Stage, but it was early in the day.

I’d released the EP on the first day of the Muster and streamed a new song everyday – there were a heaps of people singing them before I even performed that week.

While We’re Young was on that very EP.” When asked if his latest CMC accolade helped secure his prominent time on the main stage for the 2013 performance, he said “Everything helps.” Just coincidentally, “After that weekend the Gympie Muster gig was confirmed.”

He loves the atmosphere of the Muster and the “hard core” dedicated country music fans.

The new single Carry On, he says, is “something different”. While We’re Young is positive and up tempo. “But not every day is Double Island Point.” Carry On is more about sad times and his fans are loving it – it is climbing the CMC charts.

When we talked, Morgan was preparing to leave for Nashville, USA, to record his first full length album. It’s an exciting time for him - the success has been after years of hard work in an industry that is difficult to crack. “I turn 28 tomorrow and had my first professional gig at 13.”

He already has a huge amount of support from Muster regulars. Make sure you check out While We’re Young and after you’ve seen the headland, stay and listen to Carry On – they are linked on our facebook page and website.

Morgan remembers a trip to Fraser Island as a kid. He says he wants to spend more time here, and suggested he stay at Rainbow Beach after the Muster. Surfers, travellers and locals will agree – it is definitely a destination worth stopping for.

Ladies…, lock in Monday 1st July on your calendar for the famous Fashion Parade at the Church Hall which is part of the Rainbow Beach Family Fishing Competition. It’s got absolutely nothing to do with fishing but locals, fisherfolks, and ladies of all ages are invited to take part in the fun frivolity and fabulous fashion which is then followed by a delicious and scrumptious brunch plus some shopping of the outfits after the fashion parade. What more could a lady want!??

This annual event is an opportuni-

ty to think about something other than smelly fish and again Rainbow Beach local lady, Lynn Barrett, Manager from the Shell Tourist Information Centre will be providing the fashion, bags, shoes, hats, jewellery and commentary.

This function, which is put on by the Auxiliary of the Church of Good Shepherd is always a great day for locals and holiday visitors (including our Fishing Competition visitors) where there will be great savoury and sweet finger food, plenty of coffee and tea and of course…cake! All this for only $10 entry! Don’t forget there is a lucky door prize, raffles and much more!

Don’t be misled by the Tourist Information name as anyone who is in the know and has popped into the shop will know that Lynn and her team have a wide range of items on sale on the day or you could pop into the shop and check out 16+ size outfits, funky beach wear, elegant and smart casual wear, some tie dye or knitted jumpers all suited to our climate and lifestyle right here in Rainbow Beach. From shawls to shoes, handbags to hats, jewellery to jackets, and maxis to minis – Lyn has something for everyone.

Lynn is very talented at putting together outfits from top to toe - that suit all shapes sizes and ages -and the local ladies that will be modelling on the day are sure to bring a smile to your face as you marvel at their modelling ability and the style at which they portray the outfits.

Plenty to “Sea” - Wolf Rock Dive Report

Over the past month we have had some great diving out at Wolf with photographers making the most of all the action both big and small.

Pelagic species such as kingfish, mackerel, trevally, mulloway and plenty more have been into the baitfish and we also got to see some bull sharks in action on the surface as well. Other highlights have been loads of olive sea snakes, moray eels, turtles and of course the grey nurse sharks. Gropers have been a bit scarce but we got a close look at one the other day that got a bit out of sorts when we were swimming through his “territory”. The gropers are not usually aggressive but I have seen this before once or twice before.

Although visibility is still struggling a bit, we have averaging around 5 – 10 metres, we are hoping that this will improve as we get into our winter season. We have heard that the first whales have been seen off Mooloolaba so anticipate seeing some here before too long.

This month’s photos have been supplied by Chris Fry who dived with us at the end of April. These photos are what you call macro photography as you can see so much detail on such a small object.

Baby Welcome Rainbow Beach has a new little resident - Rivah Anne Conway-Jones was born at 9.10am, Friday 3rd May at Buderim Private Hospital. Rivah weighed 3.5kg (7lb 15oz) and her length was 56cm on arrival.

Rivah is the daughter of Rebecca Grant and Benn Conway-Jones. Rebecca works in her family’s business Saturn Antennas and has lived in Rainbow Beach since 1993.

She attended Rainbow Beach State School and met her fiance, Benn, at Alice Springs when working for her brother at the Accor Oasis Hotel.

Ben is originally from the Gold Coast.

After meeting Rebecca, they worked at Mt Buller, Victoria for 10mths before returning

Family Day Care Educators Lucia Phelan and Kim Marshall from Rainbow Beach celebrated National Family Day Care Week May 6th-12th. During this week Lucia and Kim joined forces to take part in Family Day Care Australia’s attempt at setting a new Guinness World Record for the World’s Largest Collage of Individual Cut out Handprints.

While some of the children were making their handprint impressions outside with Kim, the other children were inside with Lucia making ‘Star’ shaped biscuits. Under the theme “Every child is a star” National Family Day Care Week celebrates the star qualities and individuality of every child and Family Day Care’s role in supporting them to reach their potential.

Kim and Lucia are registered with Family Day Care Gympie Region. They offer a child care service where a small group of children

is provided with high quality education and care. Family Day Care is an alternative to Centre-based child care and is the closest option for Rainbow Beach families. It is also a preferred option for many parents who wish to place their children in a “home-like” atmosphere.

Lucia started just three months ago and has space for three children under 5 years of age and three school-aged children. She also has her 19 months-old-daughter Isabel included in the group.

Kim has been doing Day Care since the beginning of 2012. She can provide care for up to seven children - four children under 5 years of age and three school aged children.

Rainbow Beach Surf Club News The very exciting news is that renovations have started out the back of the club.

The new plans and deck will make the most of views to the foreshore.

Our congratulations to Tas McClintock on his appointment as Lifesaving Service Co-ordinator on the Sunshine Coast. He’ll be based at Mooloolaba and after performing above and beyond in the role, has stepped down as our Club Captain. A new Club Captain will be sought at our June AGM. The recent IRB course was very successful – we now have two new drivers and six crewman. To all involved - well done on your qualifications, they will be of great assistance to the club.

Our annual freshwater breakup on the 17th to the 19th of May was held at the freshwater camp grounds on Teewah Beach. We send a big thank you to everyone for all the voluntary hard work during the season.

The Rainbow Beach annual dinner and AGM will be held on Saturday, June 22.

Many of you will know Heather. This month we have two very good reasons to talk about this amazing lady. Heather received an award last month for her efforts as a volunteer over the last twenty years. Heather also received a kidney transplant just recently and the Community News asked Heather to share some of her experiences.

Heather first moved to Rainbow Beach in 1989 as the new Principal of Rainbow

By Judy Collins The Anzac Day long weekend was a great one, very busy with lots of visitors and locals and the following weekend (used to be Labour Day holiday) was also very busy. What a great boost for May! Mother’s Day was a perfect sunny Autumn Day. We were quite busy and I hope that all the ladies(and of course, their lovely husbands & families) enjoyed their day.

Heather worked as principal until 2002. Denise Berry says Heather gave much more to the school and the community than the job required and later to the Community Centre and calls her “one of the matrons of Rainbow Beach”.

Heather then worked at the one shift per week at the Rainbow Beach Library from 2005 and you’ll see her back at work now.

“I was diagnosed with chronic kidney failure in 1998 but didn’t start home dialysis until 2007.” Heather travelled to Nambour three times a week for three months to learn how to dialyse at home. “I put my name on list for a transplant in 2012 –and Valentine’s Day 2013 in I learnt one was available.”

Her daughters Kirsty lives in Kia Ora (and

runs Rainbow Beach Horserides with husband Andrew) and Robina works in a pharmacy in Noosa. Son Andrew has a government job in Jakarta. All four grandchildren spend plenty time in Rainbow.. with Zac now attending Rainbow Beach State School.

Of one thing Heather is certain, and that is “how important it is that you have your name on the donor list – it’s good for the donor’s family and a new way of life for the recipient.”

Thanks Heather for your words: Dialysis or a transplant is not a cure for kidney disease but instruments to allow the patient to have a better quality of life and of course allow you to remain alive. A gift such as a kidney transplant does however give you freedom for a near normal life.

I was asked to write a little about my transplant journey however I found it very difficult not to be too verbose. Today after work my problem was solved, I received a very welcome letter from my Donor’s brother. I thought this letter summed up all the emotions and thoughts for both the recipient and donors family and would like to share it with you....

As my brother’s illness struck suddenly I was unable to say Good-Bye properly, so I use the transplant as a healing process myself because every morning, I say ‘hello’ to all three recipients and wish them well and hope they have a wonderful day. This is something I will continue to do for a very long time.

I hope you are able to spend more time with your family and friends now with the Gift as it has definitely made our family more aware of the frailness of life and bought us closer together.

Joplings enjoy Reunion in Rainbow Beach The Jopling Family had a get together at Rainbow Beach to celebrate Neville’s 60th Birthday. Sally’s sister Joy lives at Rainbow so Nev and Sally hired the two house’s beside Joy’s home to accommodate all the family, who travelled from as far north as Townsville and as far south as Shepperton, Victoria. Nev and Sally have four children and their partners and sixteen grandchildren.

Nev’s Mother and sister Denise and her husband Jim and their daughter Kath came down from Mackay also to join the fun. An incredible week was had by all with swimming, beach games, horse riding, Family dinners, and Nev and his eldest daughter Jaime went skydiving. It was a week which every member of the Family went away with incredible memory’s to last a life time.

Nev and Sally will celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary next March. They met when Nev’s Father Pastor Bevan Jopling was transferred to the Surface Hill Methodist church in Gympie and married there in 1974.

COOLOOLA COVE RESIDENTS & FRIENDS Our raffle is going well and people are very happy to pay $1 for the chance to get $40 worth of food from the store of their choice. This will be continuing into June and will be drawn on a special day we are just organising.

We have been approached by Michael Lowe of Coastcare to finish what was started in Billabong Park.

gional Council to plant 200 trees, thus completing the work begun a year ago to clear some of our creeks and storm water drains to avoid floods reaching our homes.

Billabong Park was chosen as a place to start as it is well known in the area and had become extremely clogged by a pernicious weed. You may remember the pictures of the army guys giving us a hand. This

Maryborough Heritage

By Margaret Missen Maryborough is really a great place to visit. The Rainbow Beach Over 60’s group spent the best part of a day there in April and were entranced by the place.

Usually we dash up to Maryborough to do a bit of shopping and in the process overlook the real character of the town. Our visit began in the historical precinct in Wharf Street with morning tea in the Artspace that fronts the art gallery. The gallery is a small one that usually showcases the work of local artists, but this time the exhibition featured spectacular motorcycles, in honour of the Ulysses Motorcycle Club which was holding its AGM in Maryborough.The city really turned it on for the club, with motorcycle related windows in every shop, even the specialist bra boutique.

The Artspace manager graciously prepared an area on the lush lawn for our use. He put out chairs, a shade cover and an urn for us to enjoy our morning tea in the sculpture garden. This is a very pleasant area, off Wharf St, with a spectacular fountain. We were made especially welcome by the staff at the gallery. Also very welcoming was Mary Heritage, a local lady in period dress who included in her many responsibilities firing the cannon at 11am on the Customs House lawn.

After the gallery our next stop was the Military Museum, which also faces onto the Artspace. The collection is a very interesting and personal one. The various medals, letters and memorabilia, and official documents are mostly related to Maryborough residents and give a good feel of how families in Australia were affected by these distant wars. Many of the documents and items date from the very early 20th century and one of the many quirky but fascinating items was a postage stamp with The Lord’s Prayer penned on the back.

The Bond Store, the Military Museum, the Heritage centre and the Customs House are nearby and are filled with informative, innovative and interesting exhibits. These buildings were all essential parts of the functioning of the Port from the very early days. The exhibits acquaint the visitor with the early residents and the particular problems they had, as well as their obvious successes as the wealth of the city moved from wool to gold to immigration, and later to engineering and sugar. A number of the beautifully restored houses in the town were built by the more successful of the early settlers, and most have been occupied continuously since then.

Baddow House is one of the most beautiful. The residence is open to the public only occasionally and if you would like view it you need to check dates. Before our group visited Maryborough several of them read the book written by the owner about the process of renovation, “Grand Passion”, by Anne de Lisle. Other houses are also worth a visit and more information is available on the Information Centre website.

Another book, “Ebenezer’s Boss” by Sandra Nagel tells in story form the history of the establishment of the settlement and contains accounts of several examples of great perseverance, any one of which would make a good movie.

The Mary Poppins story is another attraction. P. J. Travers, author of “Mary Poppins,” was born in Maryborough and spent part of her infancy there before the family moved on with their banker father. ” Fine craftsmanship in the

Customs House Museum While moving between the buildings down a street flanked by the Customs House Hotel, The Criteron Hotel, and several other buildings that date from the early days of settlement, it was easy to feel as if you were still there in the early days when the port of Maryborough was one of the busiest entry ports for immigrants, and the streets were thronged with passengers from the clipper ships that brought new arrivals to this new frontier.

Our day also included a guided bus tour which gave us tantalizing glimpses of other interesting areas worth visiting, notably many beautiful old houses with very interesting histories, such as Brennan and Gerhaghty Store, Olsen’s Engineering Works, and also places that had been flooded earlier this year.

Except for a bit of debris still high up in trees, Maryborough has been cleaned up, is bright and shiny again, and the tourists are well and truly back. Maryborough truly is an interesting place to investigate and to take those visitors to your home who have not previously been to our beautiful Fraser Coast and Cooloola.

BreastScreen visits once again

by Michelle Gilmore Eleven vans travel across Queensland to provide free mammograms. Jeanne Langley and Susan McKean travelled from the Sunshine Coast May 1-16 to provide the service at Tin Can Bay’s Cathy House.

Jeanne reminded locals to take full advantage of the service when it returns next year. They have all of the modern equipment and women are reminded via mail when to book their appointments.

The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare reported this year that BreastScreen Australia aims to detect cases of unsuspected breast cancer in women, enabling intervention at an early stage. Finding breast cancer early often means that the cancer is small, which is associated with increased

The first Saturday of the month, pop down to the Vietnam Veterans Hall in Cooloola Cove and pick up some fruit and vege.

Also on offer are health awareness items, craftwork, embroidery and more. Breakfast is served by the Vietnam Veterans and the Cooloola Cove Residents and Friends have a membership drive and sell raffle tickets.

Vendors came from Tin Can Bay, Cooloola Cove, Gympie and its surrounds. A small friendly market – they are always interested in more stalls. Buyers include locals and visitors to the area. The May market proved to be a beautiful day – come and seen them on June 1 for some bargains.

They recommend women are screened every 2 years from ages 40 to 75 years.

Our Aussie Motorhome Adventure

Lunch at Broken Hill

Gilmores. We finally “bit the bullet”.For years we had discussed how we would love to explore more of Australia and share the experience with our family. 2013 was the last year before senior high school made it tricky to getaway. So in between school camps, business deadlines and subject selections we factored in some weeks to see a little chunk of Australia.

After weighing up all the accommodation options for a family of six, we finally opted for a motorhome. May was a flurry of kitting it out, adding a storage box and a towbar and refining our itinerary.

Despite postcards home to friends saying they would rather NOT travel with their annoying siblings all I can say is SO FAR, SO GOOD. Books, cards, games and screens are keeping the miles manageable – plus lots of picnics and breaks in playgrounds.

So far we’ve enjoyed a pool in Kirra, the markets in Inverell along the MacIntyre River, set up near the Darling from Bourke and saw it again in Wilcannia for lunch and Wentworth before it joined the Murray. We’re glad we spent a night in Glen Innes – it made us realise the motorhome was warm and cosy, and that other nights west, “Back o’ Bourke”, were merely cool, not freezing.

An old mine site in Broken Hill Our Mateship Country Tour in Bourke was excellent. Tours of the farms, picking citrus and cotton from the plants and checking out irrigation systems and a Cotton Gin were interesting to all of us. It was really good to hear it all from a local- passionate about food security and farming, deploring government intervention and removal of water allocation without compensation. He said Bourke lost a thousand residents and the bank had repossessed every farm we visited.

Despite the ‘free camping’ book, we haven’t yet been tempted to stay on a roadside stop.

We even splashed out on an ensuite site in Broken Hill! After travelling over so many dusty k’s dodging emus – the majesty of Broken Hill was a pleasant surprise. Although I had read about the architecture, population size and “greenness” it was still a shock. The kids will remember running all over the old mine sites… I will remember the huge streets, beautiful buildings and old miner’s cottages everywhere. We enjoyed a late lunch as we headed out of town at the twin lakes. A gorgeous green surrounding a big pond, complete with ducks and geese – all land that had been rehabilitated after mining.

Next we explore Mildura, the Murray and lock systems before we saunter into SA’s Berri prior to a launch “up the centre”. We are looking forward to some warmer weather!

By the way, our motorhome will be available for private hire, you just need a normal driver’s licence to get behind the wheel. It is definitely compact for six but certainly doable and a fun way to cover those k’s. (At least there are plenty of hands for the washing up!) We love that the kids can play cards or do some school work over the table, and are already planning more adventures! We can let you know about availability if you give us a call or email. By Dorothy Pashniak When the shorebirds migrate to the northern hemisphere at the end of summer I often feel rather let- down for birds to watch. However, this year has been different.

Maybe I have been looking in different places. Maybe I have just been lucky – but I have recently seen so many interesting bush birds to watch and photograph. There have been parrots and lorikeets checking out nesting hollows in the trees, and so many small brown birds chasing each other through the bushes before they pair off for nesting and raising a brood of young ones.

Recently, I have been hearing a Pardalote around my yard. These little birds have a two-note call that is very easy to identify. Many people call them “chip-chip birds” because of their call. However, hearing a Pardalote is not actually seeing one – they are an elusive little bird! I still have not been able to see the one I have been hearing around my yard for some weeks. Part of the problem is that they are so small – only 9-11cms. The other problem is that they feed mostly in the outer canopy and high in the eucalypts.

There are a number of different kinds of Pardalotes around Australia but the ones we see here are the Striated Pardalotes. My bird book describes them as podgy little birds with short tails and strong legs. They also have a little blunt bill that is perfect for taking scale insects off the leaves. These insects are a major part of their diet. They have a black crown, and bright yellow front of the eyebrow. Their throat and front is yellow fading to white. Their back is darker and the wings black with white stripes and a little orange or red spot at the top of the white stripe. Their nest is a hole in a bank of earth. A neighbour had a pair make a nest hole in a heap of sandy earth in his front yard. They will also sometimes nest in a hole in a branch.

National Volunteer Week To coincide with National Volunteer week, 13–19 May 2013, Federal Member for Wide Bay Warren Truss is calling for nominations for special awards that recognize volunteers who make an outstanding contribution to their local community.

“Ten award winners in Wide Bay will be selected to receive a special certificate of appreciation for their volunteering efforts,” Mr Truss said.

“The awards provide people with an opportunity to say ‘thank you’ to a volunteer who has helped them personally or helped in the community.”

Mr Truss said Wide Bay relies heavily on the contribution of volunteers.

“Many people volunteer to give up their free time and resources in a range of ways to make life a little easier for those less fortunate.

“Volunteers contribute by sharing their skills and knowledge to strengthen the community in areas like community welfare, emergency services, sport, and environmental conservation.

“Their efforts often go unrecognised, but our community would not be the same without the work they do,” Mr Truss said.

Our AGM was held on 23/04/13 with ten volunteers attending, consequently and to everyone’s disappointment all positions were vacated however due to lack of numbers last year’s Office Bearers were re-elected: Ross Brown (President), Mary Cottam (Secretary) andHelen Brown (Treasurer).

As this is their third year in Office all stated it would be their last allowing others to take on management roles. Well done to all for a great effort in 2012.

During the General Meeting a motion was passed to make several donations to various charities. These were: Melanoma Research $250; Medical Transport $250 and The Beach Rake Fundraiser $500.

The hours of opening are now 9:30 to 3:30 daily however during this time of year we often have difficulty filling spaces due to many volunteers travelling. We are desperate for other volunteers to come down

to keep our service in operational mode. If you have an occasional morning or afternoon free we would love to see you.

By now the Country Music night would have run its course and hopefully it was a huge success as money raised by the Community Centre with raffle, bar-b-que and bar will go towards further equipping and maintaining the Community Hall.

Thank you to all present Volunteers for their efforts and particularly Ray and Dawn and Mary with all their effort put into organizing the Country Night.

This is the most peculiar story I have read. I nearly gave up on it a couple of times but had to satisfy my curiosity so I persisted.

The story starts with a young man arriving in San Francisco. His burning ambition is to write a book. However, no matter how hard he tries, he cannot get started.

He gives up and manages to obtain a place as a reporter on the Morning Trumpet. He meets a man in a café who gives him a pocket radio and he discovers that it somehow transmits voices from the atmosphere. This enables him to write scoops for the paper and their circulation, which had been very low, now skyrockets.

During the course of his reporting, he meets Callio, a worldwide champion chess player. Her father is blind but rules her life. Also appearing in the story is a mad scientist, Milo Magnet, who discovers that he can produce weather in his laboratory. Fogs, rain and lightning storms escape to plague the city.

If you like a story that is totally different, this is the one for you.

Rainbow Beach Snow Report Hello from Peer Gynt Ski Lodge in Perisher Valley, NSW – where we live our second life..............As I write the snow has been falling for the past 3 days now with another 10 cm so far today.

After arriving Friday 10th May, Peer Gynt looked in top shape considering it had been locked up for six months, we were straight into preparations for the 2013 season which kicks off with a three day music festival starting June long weekend. First up was chopping and stacking enough firewood in out of the weather to last the season, luckily that was our first job as the snow started to fall Monday and has not yet stopped.

As we are an ‘ON SNOW LODGE’ once the snow is here to stay, roads leading to Peer Gynt are closed and the only way in is by snow mobiles in which we have a snowcat which seats 14 people and 2 skidoos and usually the only time skiers get to ride on a skidoo is if you injure yourself and need transporting to the medical centre for treatment, so it is a real treat for our guests to ride on one of these.

This year we plan to retire our old Karsbororer snowcat for a more versatile machine made by Bombardier which Bart has been busily rebuilding in time for the opening in June. The Bombardeir will be much quicker and can tolerate most surfaces such as the slushy conditions in the melt.

Our other main task before we get

COOLOOLA COAST MEDICAL TRANSPORT INC. Medical transport relies on fund raising to enable our organisation to continue helping this great community. All in a day’s work for our wonderful volunteers for without them we could not operate. You will find our members every week around town selling raffle tickets and money board squares. Bingo is held every Sunday at Cooloola Coast Bowls Club including jackpot games and free afternoon tea, eyes down 1.30pm.

Fund raising event: GARAGE SALE on Saturday 15th June from 7.00am at our premises in Scullett Drive, donations of saleable items gladly received during office hours or by appointment.

XMAS IN JULY on Wednesday 24th July, 2 course lunch, raffles, lots of prizes and live music. Tickets $22 per head available from our office or from our raffle sellers around town.Always a great afternoon of fun and good food to be held at Cooloola Coast Bowls Club.

As usual another busy month has past seeing all volunteer drivers, office staff and committee under the pump. Volunteers also wash and clean cars which takes place every Saturday morning. It is an important job as we must have clean cars for our clients to travel. Two new cars will be purchased this month, cars need to be replaced on a regular basis due to the high kilometres travelled.

Our organisation is run solely by volunteers and receives no government funding.

“snowed in” is making sure we are stocked up with enough basic non-perishable stores to last most of the season. In between our busy preparations, we enjoy walking some of the fabulous tracks around the Kosciuscko National Park or packing a picnic and the fishing rods and heading to the close by Snowy River or Lake Jindabyne to fish for trout. Beer o’clock usually sees us on our deck watching the clear crisp sun set over the majestic snow sprinkled country side followed by a red wine or two by the toasty fire inside.

Dinner might be a gourmet jaffle cooked in the fire on these nights.

Tin Can Bay Camera Club Dolphin feeding to continue The Tin Can Bay Camera Club met on Wednesday 15 May for its monthly meeting. The topic for this month was ‘Shadows’ and Ken Chapman from the Gympie Camera Club was our judge for the evening.

Later in the evening Ken showed us photographs taken when he went to the Arctic with a friend. They were there for 5 weeks and took 15,000 images between them. It really felt as if we were there as Ken went through their amazing images from the trip. Topics included life on the boat, ice bergs, glaziers, flowers and animals. They had thirty-nine sightings of polar bears - some a little too close.

Next month’s topic is ‘Nature’, so why not come along and join us at 7pm on Wednesday 19 June at the Tin Can Bay Library?

Visitors and locals can continue to enjoy the remarkable tourism opportunity of feeding wild dolphins in Tin Can Bay through a new agreement with the Newman Government last month.

Environment and Heritage Protection Minister Andrew Powell said dolphins have been fed at the Tin Can Bay inlet for 30 years.

“This activity has become an important regional tourism drawcard,” Mr Powell said.

“Some of the dolphins that participate in the feeding program have been coming to the Tin Can Bay inlet for many years and know the inlet well with an understanding of watercraft and human interaction.”

The agreement with Barnacles Café which allows the dolphin feeding to continue includes a number of conditions to ensure dolphin feeding is conducted in a responsible way.

“The Government will be working with the Tin Can Bay community to ensure a successful feeding program,” Mr Powell said.

Member for Gympie David Gibson said the agreement was a win for local businesses in Tin Can Bay. “Under Labour, dolphin feeding was always under threat and indeed we saw them attempt to stop it on several occasions,” Mr Gibson said.

“The announcement today gives long term security for an important aspect of Tin Can Bay tourism whilst also ensuring the appropriate environmental safeguards.”

Mr Powell reminded locals and tourists that dolphin feeding could only occur as part of the approved feeding program with Barnacles Café.

“The Newman Government recognises that this is a great boost for tourism across the Cooloola Coast and the wider Gympie area and we are proud to continue our support of this activity,” Mr Powell said.

“I encourage Queenslanders looking for an unforgettable wildlife experience to visit Tin Can Bay.”

Reforms herald new era of productivity for Gympie landholders Practical reforms to Queensland’s vegetation management framework passed State Parliament yesterday, restoring balance to vegetation laws and marking the end of years of neglect of the agricultural sector.

“Landholders will save time and money with the introduction of self-assessable codes for routine vegetation management activities such as weed and pest management, fodder harvesting and thinning,” he said.

Member for Gympie, David Gibson MP said the passing of the Vegetation Management Framework Amendment Bill 2013 meant landholders could get on with the job of providing food and fibre to Queenslanders.

“We are delivering on our commitment to doubling agricultural production by 2040 for the people of Gympie and all Queenslanders.”

“These new vegetation management laws represent the most significant reforms to legislation affecting the rural sector in decades, and mark the beginning of a new era of agricultural production in Queensland,” Mr Gibson said.

“The State Government has succeeded in striking an important balance between agricultural production and environmental protection.

“For too long Queensland landholders’ record as strong environmental stewards of their land has been ignored, and they have been treated as criminals for undertaking routine vegetation management activities.

“That trend ends today.

“Prior to the election, this Government committed to reducing the regulatory burden placed upon landholders by consecutive Labor governments.”

Mr Gibson said this new legislation delivers on that commitment.

Minister for Natural Resources and Mines, Andrew Cripps, said the centrepiece of these reforms is the creation of a new ‘purpose’ under the Act that allows landholders to undertake sustainable vegetation management activities to create new agricultural areas.

“The Vegetation Management Framework Amendment Bill 2013 will allow these activities to occur to support the development of high value agriculture in appropriate areas with suitable land and sufficient water, while retaining key environmental protections,” Mr Cripps said.

“We are not relaxing environmental standards, and landholders will not be able to clear land indiscriminately.

We know some are still professional, others are near to it and many are striving to become. Nowhere will you

find a more receptive nor appreciative audience. We are becoming more of a music club than ever as the same people come to hear us every month.

The Beach Rake Is On Its Way

What an incredible place we live in! The call went out and a steady stream on donations, large and small, filtered into the bank account, until finally there was enough money. Carefully studying the exchange rate for the best deal, appointing customs brokers, and ensuring the machine was certified as “brand new” {not contaminated with soil bugs}, it would seem a little overwhelming for some, but all in stride for

the Foodworks girls! Congratulations on a job well done, and we will undoubtedly keep our crown as one of the “Best 10 Beaches in Australia”.

As the cold weather has set in, so has fishing season, so we welcome our holiday makers for their annual school holidays, with the added bonus of “The Rainbow Beach Family Fishing Classic” being held for the first time during the second week.

Our family always looks forward to participating in this special event, but this year they will be really able to try for the “big one” without having to work around school times. Promises to be the best one yet, so make sure your entries are in!

Some of these may be defined as trees if they have only one stem.

Acacia complanata (Flat-stemmed wattle) grows to around 4m, bears bright yellow ball-shaped flowers from spring to autumn,

likes sandy soil and sun and is a host plant for butterflies.

Babingtonia bidwillii (formerly Baeckea virgata) grows to 4m, is hardy and produces white flowers late spring to early summer.

Backhousia citriodora (Lemon myrtle, Lemon ironwood) will grow to 15m, has leaves that are strongly lemon-scented when crushed and its profuse white flowers appear in summer.

Dodonea triquestra (Hop bush) is an open shrub to 6m that prefers well drained soil and can tolerate part shade; flowers are inconspicuous, but the interesting, papery, winged fruit may be green, pink or purple and appears from winter to spring.

Melaleuca linarifolia (Snow-in-summer, Flax-leaf paperbark)attains 10m, is hardy if conditions are moist, has white, fluffy flowers on many spikes from spring to summer that attract insects and therefore birds.

Melaleuca nodosa (Prickly-leaved paperbark)grows to 7m, tolerates sea spray, most soils and positions; clusters of cream to pale yellow flowers are a good source of pollen for bees and will therefore attract birds too.

All of these shrubs are attractive additions to a garden. They provide sensory pleasure through the variety of colour, scent, texture and shape as well as habitat and food for fauna.

Next month we will discuss trees, so in anticipation of this topic, the plant of the month is Banksia integrifolia (Coast banksia). This tree to 15m is very resistant to salt spray, can cope with most soils and positions and is frost hardy. Flowers are yellow spikes from autumn to winter and the fruit is attractive. Birds love it.

If you weren’t at the “Second Soundwaves Session” concert on May 5th you certainly missed out on an opportunity to see and hear three magnificent classically trained musicians. Jolian (Flute), Pam (Electric Piano) and Sue (Mandolin) were enthralling with their classical renditions of music and to have people of this quality is something special in Rainbow Beach.

With participants also from Tin Can Bay, Cooloola Cove, Wilson’s Pocket, Gympie and the Sunshine Coast the bi-monthly concerts are beginning to attract entertainers from the across the region.

Chrystelle Cartwright, former attendee at RB State School but now on the Sunshine Coast, returned with her family and even with a sore throat thrilled with the sweetest voice. Classically trained in singing, Chrystelle sang Leonard Cohen’s Halleluiah, and then her self compositions, Tomorrow Never Comes, Leave It All Behind and finished with Beautiful Disaster.

One of our aims to encourage people to have a go on stage resulted in excellent debut performances from Marie and Rod from (TCB) and Jo from (TCB). Backing was provided from the more accomplished musos and thanks are extended to all for their involvement. We look forward to more.

WOW! I know this sounds strange, but...... words cannot really describe what has been accomplished in this yard to make it into the garden it is now. In every direction there is something pleasing to the eye, (quirky and original comes to mind), and as for “the shed” I think we were ALL completely “gobsmacked “at what Carole has done to it. To be fair to Carole, I won’t describe it to you, because, if I did, she would be inundated with visitors to check out “the shed “. Suffice to say, we all enjoyed “the shed” and the gardens, and had a great afternoon finishing with our famous Afternoon Tea. We know Brian Smith is keen to sing and Angelique and Abbey-Rose (you will remember them from prep) are hoping to come back from Neerdie to perform when Dad gets the time off.

Bay SES benefit from funding grant The Newman Government has approved a funding grant to improve the Queensland State Emergency Service (SES) Group at Tin Can Bay. Community Safety Minister Jack Dempsey said the funding was awarded under the 2013-2014 SES Non-Recurrent Subsidy Program.

“This program provides assistance to local governments to help maintain and support the vital services the SES delivers,” Mr Dempsey said.

Member for Gympie, David Gibson MP said thirteen projects across the state were successful in securing funding under the 2013-2014 Program.

“Local councils were invited to submit applications for funding for SES accommodation, SES motor vehicle and motor vehicle accessories and SES office equipment,” Mr Gibson said.

“I am pleased to announce an application from Gympie Regional Council for a $3,920 grant has been approved to purchase air-conditioning units for the Tin Can Bay SES Group.”

The SES Subsidy Program is a Queensland Government program administered by the Grants Management Unit, Emergency Management Queensland and the Department of Community Safety.

TIN CAN BAY QUILTERS

Tin Can Bay quilters thank everyone who came and enjoyed our Friendship day on the 14th May. We welcomed over 200 people, and everyone received a lucky door prize, handmade by our members. There was a colourful display of quilts from visitors and members, which were held up on the stage and their stories told by the quilt maker. Morning tea and lunch were provided and what a great ‘spread’ there was.

Rainbow Beach Fishing Report Well this week we have a little more to report as we did 2 trips offshore. In ideal conditions on Tuesday we did a fun trip out with my son and a few old mates.

We travelled out 8 miles and pulled some nice Squire ,then decided to go wider as the wind eased. Our first drop produced a lot of nice Parrot,Hussar,Squire and Moses Perch.Then the first Big Fish of the day was sharked.We still managed to get 10kgs of the Amberjack onboard.

Other species landed were Gold Spot Wrasse,Spangled Emperor,and Pearl Perch before a big school of Tea Leaf Trevally moved in.We moved then closer in and pulled another dozen Squire.

Yesterday(Wednesday)was meant to be 5-10knots variable so we again went out wide but with a 15-20knot Westerly and current running, conditions were not as comfortable. We still managed a nice bag of Fish.Once again the main species were Parrot,Squire,Hussar, Gold Spot Wrasse Spangled Emperor and a Trout.

Now the Westerlies are here,hopefully a few more Snapper will appear in on the close reefs.

In the Straits,Wayne from Rainbow Beach tackle reports that the Mud Crabs are still being taken in good numbers,and and anyone contemplating Beach travel, well the sand is coming back .

Fishing Report for Tin Can Bay

By Jim Cole, Tin Can Bay Boat Hire Hi all and sorry for the lack of reports over the past few weeks as we have been flat out. The weekend ahead looks great with Saturday being the standout day with light winds less than 5 knots most of the day increase to just over 5 knots late afternoon. Sunday is looking ok as well with slightly stronger winds so may be best to stick to the creeks such as Snapper, Carlo, Teebar and Kauri.

The Squire are moving into the bay in some reasonable numbers at the moment and as the next few weeks go by and the water temp drops they we should also see an increase in size. Chopper Tailor are also making an appearance with schools of Tailor busting up the bait fish around Teebar Creek.

Pencil Squid are also being caught around the drop offs at Norman Point with the last of the outgoing tide giving the best results. Make sure to keep the Squid heads when cleaning up your feed of fresh Calamari as they make awesome bait. There has also been a few nice Golden Trevally caught around the Sandy Straits over the past few weeks so it is always worth keeping an eye out on the sand flats for Trevally tailing (foraging for bait in the sand their tails will thrashing about on surface).

If you don’t have access to a boat why not head down to Norman Point. The jetty is fishing well at present for Yellow Tail Pike. These guys provide great fun for the kids to catch as well as great live or dead baits. Soft plastics such as two inch Berkley Gulp in the worms or grubs work great when rigged on a 1/12oz jig head.

Mid-month brought light wind to 5 knots from the south-west to west this coinciding with some early morning high tides made some great conditions for fishing the open waters of Tin Can Bay and the Great Sandy Straits.

The squire are still around in good numbers with a few fish around the 40-50cm mark. Fishing the shallow

reef/gravel bottoms just after first light should give the best results. Squire provide some great fun when using light gear in the 2-4kg mark. Amongst the Squire are schools of moses perch, tailor and blackall. Using baits of pilchard, squid or fresh tailor work best however soft plastics also work well when targeting these species. Just make sure you are using a jig head with enough weight to make it to bottom.

Bream and whiting have been active around Bullock Point with fresh Yabbies being the weapon of choice. The flats around Bullock Point have an abundance of good size yabbies at present so make sure you pack your yabbie pump.

The school mackerel should be starting to show up about now so it is well worth floating a few pilchards rigged on gang hooks out the back even if your bottom bashing for a few reefies as you never know your luck. Hard bodied lures also work well when chasing school mackerel trolling hard bodies about 6-inches long at speeds around 6-8 knots should help find where the fish are feeding then it is worth pulling up and dropping anchor to float some pillies.

The 2013 Rainbow Beach Fishing Classic is approaching soon so if you haven’t already registered don’t delay.

It is a great family friend event with something for everyone.

It starts on a full weekend so people who can’t get the time off work can participate during the first full weekend and still be part of the grand finale the next Saturday.

The 9th Annual Rainbow Beach Fishing Classic will be a drawcard for families over the school holidays. Held June 28 to July 6 it has been moved to a family friendly time of the year for 2013. They have activities, entertainment and events on every day with special prizes for kids.

For 2013, organisers have split competitors under 18 into Juniors and Cadets, so over 13’s don’t have to compete with adults this year.

Held at the Rainbow Beach Sport and Recreation Club, the event has raised lots of money for charity, and there is always entertainment at the weigh in each night.

Competition is fierce and Rainbow is renowned for their Fishing Classic. Categories include Beach Fish, Jew Fish, Reef fish and Big Fish - pro/anglers to families are welcome to join in the fun. They’ll have separate theme days:

Kids’ Day is on the first Sunday of the event, June 30. Jumping Castles, face painting and balloons are all free for the kids after 3:00pm.

Have you ever been to the Naracoorte Caves in South Australia? We had driven past several times but never taken the deviation. This time we were determined to spend some time at one of Nature’s wonders that we have in Australia.

When we pulled into the caravan park at Naracoorte, we were amazed at the sight of 2 very unusual “caravans”. Peter was very tempted to speak to the “gypsy” caravan and suggest they use the Saturn Antenna to give them a more unusual appearance. Unfortunately, we didn’t have time to catch up with them. But we did try out the antenna there and received fabulous reception without raising the antenna off the roof of our caravan.

The guide that took us through the Victoria Fossil Cave the next day was ‘the best’. He knew his subject extremely well and kept us enthralled for the whole tour. One of the things that never ceases to amaze me is the courage and determination that the cave explorers showed in continuing their search for more and more fascinating caves AND fossils.

We spent more than 30 mins in the cave where some significant fossils were found. Palaeontologists have been studying the fossils in this cave for more than 30years.

The Naracoorte Fossil Mammal Site was World Heritage listed in 1994 because of its significance in showcasing the evolution of fauna in Australia. One of the fascinating creatures that was discovered is the “koala kangaroo” that is replicated in the Wonambi Fossil Centre. It was a very tall kangaroo that appears to have a face similar to the koala. We also checked out a ‘tiger’ that was found fossilised in one of the caves in this area.

It will always be remembered by us because when we came out of the caves, we had a message waiting for us from our son. He told us to hurry to Canberra because our first (biological) granddaughter was about to put in an appearance.

I’ve also included some photos of the proud grandparents of Rivah Anne. Congratulations to Rebecca and Benn.

The Blow is an easy 600m walk from the car park or take the longer walk from the National Parks Office. Spectacular views of The Coloured Sands, Double Island Point and Tin Can Bay Inlet are the bonus for your efforts. When the thermals are right, you will often see Hang Gliders taking off and landing at this beautiful piece of Nature's Sculpture.

Lake Poona After morning tea or lunch in the picnic area you can do some wonderful walks to Lake Poona or through some spectacular Rainforest. Allow 40 minutes to reach Lake Poona.

Lake Freshwater Only accessible by 4WD, Tour or Walking. Walking tracks starts at the Bymien picnic area.

The round trip from Rainbow Beach will take a full day and requires fitness.

Foreshore Tin Can Bay You can walk 4km from Crabs Creek to Norman Point, over picturesque bridges, signage of flora and fauna, through mangroves, playgrounds and outdoor gyms. It is mostly flat – very safe for children on wheels. Start at the playground opposite the library, cycle to Crabs Creek and stop for a coffee, then return to opposite the library. Enjoy the views out to the inlet while the kids enjoy the playground and skatepark.

Rainbow Beach 10000 steps walk – from the headland behind the Surf Tower and Playground to Carlo Road.

Paths are perfect for bicycles, scooters and skateboards.

Hang Gliding & Paragliding Carlo Sand Blow is one of the top spots for hand gliders in Queensland with the National Championships being held there each January. With a take off of 300ft and a soarable ridge of 12 kilometres long and about 500ft high, Carlo Sand Blow is definitely the place to go. Fliers should be of Hang2 standard, fly in north easterly winds and remember landing in the bathing reserve is prohibited.

Rainbow Beach State School News

Discipline The Queensland Government has announced a plan to strengthen school discipline in state schools. The plan is the first of 15 strategies to be developed from the recently released Great teachers = Great results direct action plan. It will reduce red tape and provide principals with the flexibility to work with the school community to implement a range of new and strengthened disciplinary approaches. Celebrate our successes Thank you to everyone at last Friday’s parade it was a pretty long parade, with plenty of cross country, “Young Leader” and student of the week awards given out. Whilst I’m sure Mr Bennett’s arm was sore from shaking everyone’s hands it is extremely important to recognize and celebrate our student’s success. It’s really lovely to see the sense of achievement and pride on a child’s face when they receive the recognition they deserve.

Zone Cross Country This year we had 21 students nominated to represent Rainbow Beach SS in the Gympie Zone Cross Country that was held on Tuesday the 7th of May. This was a record number of students for our school and we congratulate all of our runners for doing their best and having a go at the Zone cross country. Congratulations to Hugh Gilmore who came third in his age division and to James Worthington who came 8th in his age group.

NAPLAN Congratulations to students in years 3, 5 and 7 who have recently completed their NAPLAN testing. Students sat a language conventions and writing test, as well as a reading test as well as a numeracy test. A big thank you to our breakfast club volunteers who donated their time this morning (and Wednesday and Thursday morning) to ensure our 3, 5, 7 students are well fed and well cared for before NAPLAN!

Literacy This week parents of Rainbow Beach State School would have received a letter about the schools subscription to the website “Literacy Planet”. We have chosen to subscribe to this website because we believe that children’s learning does not stop at 2:30 when school finishes. We believe that it is important for our students to continue learning if they choose to do so whenever they want. One of the reasons we chose Literacy Planet was the fact that students could access the program at home.

All students need, to access the program at home is their username and password.

Using sites such as literacy planet allows us to engage students in their learning by using technology, which as we know is an excellent motivational tool.

Zone Sports Congratulations to Levi McDermott, Brayden McGrath, Bailey Craig, and Codey Hethorn who recently represented Rainbow Beach State School in various Gympie Zone sports teams. Levi made the u/12 boys soccer team and Cody, Brayden and Bailey made the boys u/12 rugby league team. The boys travelled to Hervey Bay with their respective teams to play against other teams from the Wide Bay region to compete for spots in the Wide Bay team/s of their respective sports. The boys all played well in their respective teams and all enjoyed the experience of representing not only Rainbow Beach but Gympie as well.

Anzac Day A big thank you to our parents for your continued support of our students marching in the RSL community march. We had a great turn out and in turn received some extremely positive feedback from the RSL about our contribution to the march and the service.

Athletics Thank you to everyone for a great day on Friday the 10th of May at our Athletics carnival. It really was a great day. We had been worried at the beginning of the week that the carnival would be rained out but thankfully the weather was kind to us! We still have to run the 800m events for the 10, 11 and 12 year olds, which we hope to do this week. We will then be able to announce the overall winners.

Interschool Carnival The next event on our sporting calendar is the Cooloola athletics carnival, which this year will be held at Kia Ora State School.

This carnival is an inter-school carnival with Rainbow Beach competing against Gympie East SS, Kia Ora SS and Wolvi SS. We are planning on taking the whole school to the carnival as there will be events for all of the students. We will be able to transport some of the students to Kia Ora on the Lions club bus as well as the Sport and Rec club bus, however we will need assistance from parents. The light turned yellow, just in front of him. He did the right thing, stopping at the crosswalk, even though he could have beaten the red light by accelerating through the intersection.

The tailgating woman was furious and honked her horn, screaming in frustration, as she missed her chance to get through the intersection, dropping her cell phone and makeup.

As she was still in mid-rant, she heard a tap on her window and looked up into the face of a very serious police officer. The officer ordered her to exit her car with her hands up.

He took her to the police station where she was searched, fingerprinted, photographed, and placed in a holding cell.

After a couple of hours, a policeman approached the cell and opened the door.

She was escorted back to the booking desk where the arresting officer was waiting with her personal effects.

He said, ‘’I’m very sorry for this mistake.

You see, I pulled up behind your car while you were blowing your horn, Flipping off the guy in front of you and Cursing a blue streak at him.

I noticed the ‘What Would Jesus Do’ bumper sticker, The ‘Choose Life’ license plate holder, The ‘Follow Me to Sunday-School’ bumper sticker, and the chrome-plated Christian fish emblem on the trunk, Soooooooooooooo-o naturally....I assumed you had stolen the car.’’

FORGOT MY GLASSES

Yesterday my daughter asked why I didn’t do something useful with my time.

She suggested I go down to the senior centre and hang out with the guys.

I did this and when I got home last night I told her that I had joined a parachute club.

She said “Are you nuts? You’re almost 80 years old and you’re going to start jumping out of aeroplanes?”

I proudly showed her that I even got a membership card.

She said to me, “For heaven’s sake, where are your glasses!

This is a membership to a Prostitute Club, not a Parachute Club!”

I’m in trouble again and don’t know what to do!

I was at the pool the other day and thought I would take a sneaky pee in the deep end, well the lifeguard must have seen me!! He blew his whistle so loud I nearly fell in!!!!!!

Green Healthcare A woman from Brisbane who was a tree hugging greenie and an anti-hunter activist purchased a tract of land near Goomborian.

There was a large tree at one of the highest points in the tract. She wanted to get a good view of the splendour of her land, so she started to climb the big tree. As she neared the top she encountered a tawny frogmouth owl and to her surprise it attacked her. In her haste to escape the woman slid down the tree and got many, many splinters in her crotch area.

In considerable pain she hurried to the local ER to see a Doctor. She told him she was an environmentalist anti-hunting greenie and how she came to get all the splinters.

The Doctor listened to her story with great patience and then told her to go wait in the waiting room while he saw if he could help her.

She sat and waited 3 hours before the doctor reappeared.

The angry woman demanded “What took you so long?” He smiled and said “well, I had to get permits from the EPA, the Forestry, and the Council before I could remove oldgrowth timber from a recreational area so close to a waste treatment facility. And I hate to tell you, I’m sorry, but medicare turned me down.”

Authority Figure A R.C.M.P officer stopped at a ranch just outside Edmonton Alberta , and talked with an old rancher. He told the rancher, “I need to inspect your ranch for illegally grown drugs.” The rancher said, “Okay , but don’t go in that field over there.....”, as he pointed out the location.

The rancher nodded politely, apologized, and went about his chores. A short time later, the old rancher heard loud screams, looked up, and saw the R.C.M.P. officer running for his life, being chased by the rancher’s big Santa Gertrudis bull...... With every step the bull was gaining ground on the officer, and it seemed likely that he’d sure enough get gored before he reached safety.

The officer was clearly terrified. The rancher threw down his tools, ran to the fence and yelled at the top of his lungs.....

Dear Editor I would like to congratulate Frank Barille on introducing the Sound Waves afternoon for Community members to display their musical or recital talents with the community.

Many people travel over from TCB and Cooloola to listen and share their skills.

On Sunday we were privileged to have artists from the Sunshine Coast and Gympie and of course the Cooloola Coast.

The afternoon was great, it is a shame more Rainbow Beach people don’t see the value of such an enjoyable afternoon for just a gold coin donation.

Rainbow Shores Golf Club News Golf in the last month has been lots of “fun”. We played an ‘Ambrose’ on April 14th, which was a thrill for me because the person I was partnered with played a great game and we won!! Thanks Trevor. Ambrose results: 1) Trevor & Mary 2) Simon & Mal 3) Ada & Daryl.

Mother’s Day was another “fun day”, again an Ambrose, but with a twist, players were only allowed 3 clubs each!! This testing round won by: 1) Dave & Rosie, 2) Shane & Ben. As it was Mother’s Day, all of the mothers were rewarded with a pink golf ball.

Our sponsor for this month was Bitchy Chix, and being a girl that likes Bitchy Chix fashions, Sandra did her very best and collected first prize. Well done Sandra. Second were Trevor and third Denise Metcalf. Many thanks to Shelley for sponsoring the day.

Some of our players should do really well in the up-coming Championships they are playing and winning well. Carol Warren has won Ladies Day, the Chook Run and the Weekly Comp during the last month. Gill Veitch has also won the Weekly Comp twice over the last month. Other Weekly winners have been Darryl Keily and Wendy MacFarlane. Recent Ladies Day winners were Sandra Keily and Jenny Pike. While Daryl and Marie Young have taken home Chooks.

The Championship rounds will be starting in late May and continue through June, so some of us need to practice!!

The Club and IGA were our Major sponsors for May, and we are very greatful for their support.

On a sad note many will recall that we lost our popular member, and Chook Run organiser, Leigh Butterfield just over 12 months ago. On the 16th June we will hold the Leigh Butterfield Memorial Major. It would be wonderful to have as many members as possible playing that day in memory of Leigh.

COOLOOLA DRAGON BOAT CLUB

What a great start to the Wide Bay Series in Hervey Bay on May 11th.

Our 20’s team came in 2nd to the formidable 1770 team with Hervey Bay 3rd and Bundaberg 4th. What a difference a full boat makes. Monica and Syd joined us for their first away Regatta and also new paddler’s Dianne and William.

The 10’s team paddled with much enthusiasm and came away with a win. The training is finally paying off with everyone looking forward to round 2 at Bundaberg on the 15th June.

May 12th saw the Dragons participate in the Mother’s Day Classic fundraiser for cancer. Following the run/ walk “Puff” was on the water for a Paddle for Pink come and try session.

This proved very successful with 17 locals having a go at Dragon Boat paddling. We would love to see them again

Zone Cross Country Trials Congratulations to all participants who gave their best effort at the Gympie Zone and Cooloola District Cross Country Carnival last month. More Coast students than ever were selected to represent their schools on the day -perhaps in part something to do with Rainbow’s excellent Running Club?

PE teacher James Druitt commented that “Each runner gave their best effort and should be congratulated on their participation and school spirit. It was great to see students who had already completed their run make an effort to get back to the side of

the track and cheer on their mates in later races.”

Held in Gympie, it was great to see the school spirit and students gaining excellent times. Four Cooloola Coast kids have made it to the Zone team for Cross Country and will represent Gympie at the Wide Bay carnival in Bundaberg: Hugh Gilmore (RBSS) and Kate Gilmore (Gympie High) placed 3rd, Jadelyn Carey (TCB) 4th and Eric Lawton (Gympie High) 5th in their age groups.
