ESPITE THE hammering our beach has copped by the weather, the media pounded it so much more.

At the recent tourism forum, our coast locals pointed out to local dailies the exaggeration of weather events and their effect on our coast. Do they realise the impact they have on visitor numbers?

Our beach remains beautiful, the sunsets more divine, with rocks and rock pools to discover. Double Island Point is still accessible via the Freshwater Track.

Services, road closures and Two Up for ANZAC Day A

NZAC DAY IS A solemn event on Thursday April 25, we thanks all the locals involved for inviting visitors and residents to these services.

The Rainbow Beach Dawn Service will commence at 0415 hours at the cenotaph. After the ceremony those attending are welcome to participate in the gunfire breakfast at the Rainbow Beach Surf Club.

The march through town is expected to be approved by the relevant authorities and will begin at 1000 hours from 14 cnr Rainbow Beach Road and Clarkson Drive to the cenotaph followed by the memorial service. Marchers are requested to assemble from 0945 hours

on the footpath at that corner and on Rainbow Beach Road east of the road closure barricade.

Rainbow Beach Road will be closed at the corner with Clarkson Drive at the eastern side of the intersection and up to the intersection with wide bay esplanade. Kirchner Street will be closed at the southern side of the intersection with Taylor Lane.

The duration of closures will be approximately one hour from 0930 hours. I trust this disruption will not cause undue inconvenience and I thank you for your indulgence.

Memorial Hall 1045 Morning Tea This is a community event and all are invited to attend. As is usual Two-Up and drink sales will be behind the sub-branch hall commencing after the march and service at the TCB ANZAC Memorial Park.

Apart from ANZAC Day, every Tuesday and Wednesday (9.30 to 11.30am) the drop-in centre is open if anyone wishes to come and have social interaction or have questions for the sub-branch, with the exception of the first Tuesday of the month, which sees the Carers’ Meeting with a member of Carers Queensland along to answer your questions.

Also, the second Tuesday of the month is the Veterans and Community morning tea at 10am. Live music will be provided and of course the tasty treats prepared by the Welfare and Volunteer Team. This month is also Easter, so that will be the theme, and also Lawrence will be playing along with Denise.

Every Sunday we have our famous BBQ from 12 to 2pm, raffles drawn at 2.30pm.

All members of the community are invited to activities at the Tin Can Bay RSL Sub Branch.

Rainbow Beach Sports Club proudly present the event at Centre Block, Corner Clarkson Drive and Rainbow Beach Road, on April 27.

Gates open 3pm and there will be live music, food stalls, bar with action starting at 5pm.

There’s bull rides, saddle rides, bareback rides - events for senior bull, novice bull and novice horse plus the under 18 junior bull ride.

Community groups are backing the event, helping at the bar, stalls and facility management.

Learn to surf and surf-skate workshops

Surf – Skate aims to mimic surfing skills on a specially designed surf-skate board.

Rainbow Beach Learn to Surf is running surf-skate workshops, and ‘learn to surf’ programs for the school holidays.

The issue surfers have is wave time.

Wave selection, and time on the wave where you can work on speed generation, turns, linking manoeuvres and getting your body to put all these together. By making mistakes you get very little time on the ride phase when you’re out for a session.

Learn to fish

Last month’s Sunfish Kids Fishing Day was booked out - there are still a few places left for Sunday April 14.

So why is it so popular? It’s free, the focus is on fun and enjoying recreational fishing. Plus kids are presented with a new rod and reel, a tackle box, and a Certificate

TAKE CARE

With the school holidays and Easter break approaching, our Local Ambulance Committee warn parents of the dangers for children around campfires. Apart from the obvious need to supervise children near a fire, parents need to be aware of the correct way to extinguish a campfire.

Sand or dirt should not be used, as heat

up to 100 degrees Celsius can remain for over eight hours and children have been burnt stepping on the site of a campfire.

A fire put out with a bucket of water will retain little or no heat after a period of 10 minutes. If burns occur, they should be treated with cold running water and medical assistance sought immediately.

Unquestionably one of Australia’s finest live acts is Thirsty Merc. Having released four critically acclaimed albums, over 250,000 album sales under their belt, a finalist in the APRA Song of the Year for 20 Good Reasons (which also reached #1 on iTunes in Australia), and 5 ARIA Award nominations, Thirsty Merc have found their way into the fabric of Australia’s musical landscape.

Thirsty Merc formed in Sydney in 2002 releasing their debut EP, First Work, in September 2003, before being signed to Warner Music. The band’s big break came in 2004 with the release of their debut, self-titled album which included the hits, Someday Someday and In The Summertime (the theme for Bondi Rescue since 2006).

Two more studio albums followed Slideshows in 2007 (#4 ARIA Album) and Mousetrap Heart in 2010 (#14 on the ARIA Album chart) which included radio staples, 20 Good Reasons, Mousetrap Heart and Tommy and Krista.

ASTER WILL BE upon us very soon, Easter eggs, fluffy bunnies, cute bilby’s, holidays and Tin Can Bay Coast Guards Easter Collection.

This is Coast Guards biggest one-off collection and we ask locals and visitors to give generously to our members at roadside collection points. These points are located at the Rainbow Beach turn off from Tin Can Bay Road and in Tin Can Bay coming into town just past the school.

Collection times are 6am - 6pm Wednesday April 17 to Friday April 19 and 6am - 2pm Saturday April 20.

Members give their time voluntarily so that Coast Guard can continue to carry out much needed help to all on the water, as well as courses available to the public including radio, first aid, and bar crossing.

Funds raised over our Easter collection are a large part of keeping Tin Can Bay Coast Guard operational and our boats afloat, so we can keep assisting the local and visiting boating community.

Events to book in for May Get ready to rumble Sunday May 5 at 11am sees the start of the third annual Rainbow Beach HOTROD ‘N’ ROCKABILLY RUMBLE, now relocated to the centre block.

Another year seems to have flown by, so it’s time again to get ready for this year’s show.

Organiser, Nick McGrath said, “With each event we’re including more and more features, thanks to the townspeople and tourists who love to attend the May Day show - more categories, more trophies, more stalls and more activities for the kids!

“Suzie Dunstan (Miss Blondie Bubbles) will be hosting the ‘Miss Rainbow Beach’ Pin Up Pageant, with a tropical theme being the order of the day.”

There is always a wide range of classic cars, custom cars and hotrods, plus custom and classic motorcycles from all over the world.

With live music and fashion throughout the day, expect plenty of food and beverages flowing as well, to help fundraising for local groups.

Nick explained, “The aim is to ‘grow the show’ for the whole town’s progress! The benefits can already be seen as more and more people visit this event and then discover more about our region.”

For many, it’s the first time they’ve visited but surely not the last.

Rockabilly Rumble rolls from 11am till 4pm at the centre block and then from 5pm till late at The Sports Club, with live rock ‘n’ roll, a local’s pageant, prizes and dancers - all for only a fiver!

Warbirds to fly over the Bay The hugely popular Warbirds weekend is on again at the Tin Can Bay Model Flying Club next month on the weekend of May 4 and 5.

The grounds should be in spectacular condition as the club’s bore is operating efficiently and the purchase of a travelling irrigator allowing the watering of the runways, pits area and surrounds. We only hope the lawn grubs do not discover this lush feeding ground.

The Gympie Regional Council’s grant to help with the installation of solar panels means the club can irrigate with very little cost.

Last year the Warbirds Association decided to allow non-warbird planes to fly if there were insufficient numbers to keep the public entertained, and the same will apply this year.

The ever-popular Aaron Garle from Rosewood (pictured), near Ipswich, will almost certainly have his Super Constellation flying on this weekend. The public will remember him having taxiing practice at last October’s Scale Model Muster, as he had only just bought the model. Since then he has become very efficient at operating this fabulous four-engined model.

Aaron is sure to have his ever-popular jet here also.

Other visitors are expected from Brisbane suburbs, Sunshine and Gold Coasts and north to Bundaberg, as well as Toowoomba.

As usual, admittance is by gold coin donation, and the public will be catered for with a full canteen selling hot and cold food and drinks.

2019 Mother’s Day Classic The annual Tin Can Bay Mother’s Day Classic is a great opportunity to support breast cancer research while enjoying a memorable morning walking in celebration and reflection.

This year the walk/run will be taken along the Tin Can Bay Foreshore from Wes Mitchell Park to Crab Creek and back.

The Pair that Getaway!

EET JAIMIE AND LISA Kerr…and Tabbe (their best friend) who now manage the Rainbow Getaway Holiday Apartments in Rainbow Beach.

The friendly trio have a great fondness for this lovely town and the coast, so they’ve jumped at the chance to take on the role.

The Kerrs have been on a working adventure for the past five years, setting off from the Sunshine Coast to experience the Queensland outback. “I’d been a slave to my last job,” said Jaimie, “so changes needed to be made”.

Just a few of the regions they visited on their journey were Emerald - where Jaimie drove a tour coach, Quilpie and the Gulf (excellent Barra fishing). Lisa kept herself busy as a barista by making terrific coffee for the locals and tourists, also by calling on her background as an Aged Care professional.

“There’s so much to see and do out there,” Lisa shared. “We’d go to camping and 4WD shows and buy everything!

There was such a sense of freedom, we just followed our noses.”

However, what they do best together is property management, and the Burketown Caravan Park benefitted from the couple’s skills and warm outgoing personalities. The last stop was Toogoolawa before taking up the post here in Rainbow Beach recently.

Jaimie’s skills in horticultural landscape construction have already been put to work upgrading the Getaway Apartments, the locals have noticed! The gardens are undergoing beautification and redesign, plus a fresh new paint job and modernisation of the exterior is underway.

The Kerrs enjoy the diversity of this part of the world with the beach, surf fishing and lifestyle and had previously purchased property at Cooloola Cove.

“We plan to retire here one day, but for now it’s business, onwards and

OLF ROCK DIVE are finally getting back out to Wolf Rock after the tough weather during February and the site is going off! Around 40 resident grey nurse sharks are on site with as many as five different shark species sighted in one dive.

Leopard shark, tawny nurse shark, wobbegong and spinner sharks.

This is a great indicator of how successful a marine sanctuary Wolf Rock is. The fish are thriving and therefore the sharks are too, which all in all equals a healthy ecosystem.

For the next three months it will be likely to see the majestic manta rays on one or two of our cleaning stations. The cleaning station is an area where large fish and rays hover for a while allowing the smaller cleaner wrasse to pick bits of debris from their teeth and gills, even the turtles enjoy getting their shells cleaned.

We have several special areas like this on Wolf Rock and have seen five mantas this past week hanging out with our lucky divers.

AINBOW BEACH Commerce and Tourism welcomed new members at the meeting held at Brent’s Burgers last month. Join as a member and attend the next meeting on May 13. Here are a few of the items discussed: Lights at the Pine Trees - to be improved or replaced (near the Lookout)

Every other business owner on the coast does not need to wait until caravan parks are full before we encourage RV travellers with a different option

USINESS OWNERS, community groups and interested coast residents met to discuss the future of events in the Tin Can Bay area mid March, and due to the in-depth conversation held it was decided to follow up with another meeting the following week.

Representatives from community organisations and business owners explored past events and their economic and tourist impact. While it was agreed that the social enjoyment of large events like carnivals and festivals were positive; the economic reach did not extend to a majority of businesses in the area.

Talk also included the Seafood Festival and other major events which were held during peak holiday times, meaning accommodation operators were actually

being overwhelmed rather than assisted.

Participants also conversed about the identity the area had, and if our events reflected that? Rising costs, volunteer hours and legal obligations were also discussed.

With those present all wanting to see the area move forward, encourage local spend and entice visitors to stay longer, especially in off-peak quiet times, it was also acknowledged that the solution was not a simple one and would need a whole town approach.

A new dolphin!

XCITEMENT AT THE Dolphin Centre last month with a strange dolphin coming in with Mystique and Ella. We feel this dolphin has been a previous feeder as it was comfortable with the volunteers giving it fish.

In the past we had seen him in the creek during the feeding of Mystique and Patch but then didn’t come too close. We are hoping that he will rejoin in the feeding and take fish from the public. Fingers crossed! There is a possibility it was Harmony, but we wait for confirmation from our researcher.

Mystique was missing for a few days as

he had been out there fighting with other male dolphins, presumably over mating.

He was badly raked (teeth scraping marks) on his body. Thank goodness the healing process only takes a couple of weeks and he is starting to look good.

The water is warmer during the summer so the dolphins are showing their base colour of pink on the underbelly and rostrum. We are blessed with having the most concentrated numbers of the Australian humpback dolphins in Australia within the Tin Can Bay Inlet and Southern Sandy Straits region.

Be careful when out there in your boats so as not to injure dolphins, dugongs and turtles.

A TRIBUTE TO

Maree Prior P

INT-SIZED COOLOOLA COAST conservation powerhouse Maree Prior, past Cooloola Coastcare Coordinator and Life Member, passed away on Sunday March 17.

Maree was Coordinator from 2004 to 2017 and Natural Resource Management Projects Development Officer in the adjoining Queensland coastal catchment of Noosa since 2010.

In 2017 she took a position as Projects Officer for Biodiversity with Burnett-Mary Regional Group where she continued her tireless work for the environment she loved so dearly.

Maree devoted herself to projects related to better understanding and management of coastal systems, including ocean beaches, estuaries and wetlands, through community engagement activities and on-ground work.

Maree’s fun-loving nature and ready laugh were her signature as she rallied many volunteers in projects to understand, protect and rehabilitate

the foreshore in Tin Can Bay, the creeks of Cooloola Cove, the beachfront of Rainbow Beach, Fraser Island (K’Gari) and the marine environments of the Great Sandy Straits.

Maree captured her much-loved wallum in beautiful artworks and never backed away from a battle to protect these precious and internationally recognised natural areas.

Maree’s many years of tireless work and the commitment of her merry band of volunteers were recognised in 2017 with the Sure Gro Coastcare Award at the Queensland Landcare Awards.

Maree was farewelled by her family and friends and the wider conservation community at a service on Friday March 21 in Gympie.

ARYBOROUGH - BORN John Sinclair worked tirelessly for 48 years advocating for conservation of the natural environment.

His greatest battle was protecting the pristine lakes and forests of K’gari (Fraser Island) from the threats of sandmining and logging. John’s legacy is that K’gari is now a World Heritage site, a National Park, a major tourism destination and a centre for scientific research.

In 1971 he founded the Fraser Island Defenders Organization, FIDO. In 1976 he was named as The Australian newspaper’s Australian of the Year. In 1990 he was selected by the United Nations Environment Program in the Global 500.

In 1993 he was presented with the Goldman Environmental Prize. In 2014 he was appointed in the Order of Australia. He was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from the University of the Sunshine Coast in 2017.

John Sinclair passed away in Brisbane on February 3, 2019, aged 79.

Hooning - are you part of the problem?

I

T IS NOW six years since the State Government passed legislation cracking down on illegal street racing and hooning.

Unlicensed driving is just one of the offences contained in the Type 2 offence category. Others include:

The ‘GO TOO FAR, LOSE YOUR CAR’ campaign introduced new laws to improve road safety and deter repeat offenders by taking their cars away. Under this legislation, hooning and other reckless driving offences were broken into two categories, designated Type 1 and Type 2 offences.

• Driving a vehicle while it is unregistered and uninsured

Law-abiding motorists have not been affected and probably don’t even know what I’m on about, but those who go too far and repeatedly break road safety laws risk being in the same situation as old ‘rust bucket’ mentioned above, or possibly worse.

• High-range drink driving (0.15% and over) • Exceeding the speed limit by more than 40km/h • Driving an illegally modified vehicle • Failure to provide a specimen of breath or blood, and • Driving while suspension.

Drivers committing their first Type 2 offence receive no sanction apart from a

ticket or court appearance. However, for the second Type 2 offence, the driver’s vehicle will be immobilised by number plate confiscation or impounded for seven days.

It just gets worse from there, with the penalty increasing to 90 days for the third offence and you can probably guess what happens if you still haven’t learnt your lesson – fourth Type 2 offence – CAR GONE!!

If you’re a proper hoon and enjoy doing burnouts, racing, engaging in speed trials, operating a vehicle in a dangerous manner, driving carelessly or evading police (all Type 1 offences when committed on a public road), the news is even worse for you.

You’ll lose your car for 90 days the first

time you’re caught and then, forever, the second time.

You may think that is all a bit extreme and these types of offences don’t happen that often, especially down here on the coast. Well, think again!

You can do your part to end hooning on our streets by reporting dangerous and reckless driving to the Hoon Hotline on 13HOON (13 4666) or submitting an online Hoon Report on the Queensland Police Service website.

And if you’re part of the problem, remember, ‘GO TOO FAR - LOSE YOUR CAR’.

Treat dunes with respect

AINBOW BEACH has been severely damaged by the recent cyclonic activity and it is quite distressing to see the frontal dunes disappear and the fore dunes badly eroded. Many of the young casuarinas that have grown since the last severe weather event have been washed away and the older, less flexible casuarinas have fallen.

Removal of the frontal dunes causes exposure of plants in the fore dunes, that lie immediately behind, to severe conditions they are not designed to withstand. Damage to the shrubs affects dune stability and may make the environment unsuitable for the wildlife that inhabits the area.

We cannot control the weather, but pedestrian traffic also damage dunes, so it is incumbent upon

Audit shows turn-outs could be the answer to slow movers!

I

S THERE ANYTHING more frustrating than being stuck behind a vehicle doing 90 in a 100 zone?

Yes - being one of ten cars unable to pass a vehicle at 80k or 70k!

Unfortunately, this is not rare occurrence.

For the last three years, Tony Stewart, Secretary of the Rainbow Beach Commerce and Tourism, has been corresponding and calling the Minister for Transport and Department of Main Roads DMR. And the common response is that passing lanes would be implemented in preference to turn-out bays.

While it is acknowledged that a series of passing lanes would provide a better outcome to alleviate this situation, clearly the cost of providing passing lanes should be significantly higher than the construction of turn-out areas.

This type of facility is used on rural roads in other Queensland shires and it is considered

that construction of a number of turn-out bays for eastbound and westbound traffic on the Tin Can Bay - Gympie and Rainbow Beach Roads would provide a notable increase in road safety along these routes.

The Tin Can Bay – Gympie Road and the Rainbow Beach Road both carry significant volumes of tourist traffic, including caravanners, fishers (towing boats), and internationals in camper vans.

Typically, many of these motorists are new to the area and are not familiar with the roads and so tend to travel slower than

the ‘regular’ traffic that includes commuters and regular users.

This situation results in frequent and significant platooning of traffic behind slower vehicles, which generates frustration in some motorists and results in some dangerous passing manoeuvres because of the very limited passing opportunities along the route, whether travelling to or from Gympie.

In an attempt to demonstrate the feasibility of this proposal, a road inspection was conducted with Mr Bob Spencer, civil

engineer/project manager with many years experience in road design and construction, and previously Director Engineering with North Burnett Regional Council.

Tony and Bob identified a number of locations where turn-out bays could be constructed on the Tin Can Bay - Gympie Road. Rainbow Beach Road is yet to be audited.

Their letter was unanimously endorsed by the RBCT, and Tony will continue to persist with the departments and now Council, who sit on the Traffic Advisory Group.

FEW MEMBERS of the Over 60s recently visited the newly reopened Anderleigh Winery situated in the Gympie region. Anderleigh is an accessible drive, one hour (67km) from Rainbow Beach or 35 minutes (34km) from Gympie.

Visitors are able to check out a selection of wines for sale and our group certainly dabbled in a bit of wine tasting which led to some members purchasing their favoured drop.

The winery features an air conditioned restaurant suitable for functions or casual dining in or outdoors.

We left the latter option for cooler days.

The lunch menu catered for everyone’s taste and the meals earned thumbs up by all.

Future plans for the winery include Saturdays with a music at the winery afternoon, with great food, wine, band or selected music.

Caravan enthusiasts are welcome to park their vans on site and enjoy what the winery has to offer.

Our next meeting is Tuesday April 2, 10am at the Surf Club.

HE IMMUNISATION Coalition recommends getting a flu shot in April or early May, as it takes two weeks for the body to build immunity and the effect usually lasts for 6-8 months.

Richard our Pharmacist advised Rainbow Beach Pharmacy is now offering flu vaccinations, said “People don’t have to drive to Gympie or book a doctor’s appointment. Last season we had quite a few people come in and ask for it.”

So Richard has had specialist training, and the team have sectioned an area off in the pharmacy for privacy.

He encourages walk in appointments, “If I’m not busy, we’ll try to do it straight away. You need to wait 15 minutes after you have had the injection to check there is no reaction.”

Richard advised, “Any eligible people who can get the vaccine for free, I suggest see their GP (for example over 65s and pregnant women).”

All influenza vaccines available in Australia this year have been updated to better protect against the circulating virus strains!

People who get vaccinated are at lower risk of contracting influenza than those who are not.

They are less likely to be laid up in bed with sweats, shivers and muscle aches, and take time off work or their usual activities, or to be hospitalised with complications.

If you are vaccinated, you’re less likely to get the flu.

The Cooloola Coast Local Ambulance Committee previously obtained a supply of Button Battery Aware magnets and distributed them throughout the community. The magnets stress the need to be vigilant and also give advice on what action is to be taken if one is swallowed.

ACK IN 1990 when Richard Hamilton, a superintendent of the Campbelltown ambulance service, took witness of a stressed child being calmed through the gift of a teddy bear he saw a simple but affective approach to dealing with trauma.

Fast forward almost 30 years and the initiative has seen countless gifts of knitted love reduce suffering in both young and old.

The Tin Can Bay QCWA is a proud supporter of the project and are holding a ‘How To’ session. Both experienced and novice knitters are welcome to come and learn the skill of creating these bundles of joy.

The pattern requires 8 ply wool and size 10 knitting needles so if you have some bring them along, however there will also be a few spares to learn on at the Branch.

Session starts at 10am on Wednesday April 3 at the Tin Can Bay QCWA meeting room on Whiting St (behind the Seaside Cottage.) If you can’t make it, but still want to contribute or would like a pattern, contact Wendy on 0412 547 043.

Sailability now has an electric hoist We at Sailability Tin Can Bay Inc, are extremely excited to report that a dear friend of our group has bequeathed us over $40,000 in her will. She passed away quietly last year. We are so grateful to her for thinking of us.

We will be using some of the funds to purchase an electric hoist to lift our sailors into the yachts. The current manual hoist has seen better days and as most of us are the age group that suffers from back and joint problems we really do have a need for the electric hoist.

Our local physio, Sue Bennett, was quite adamant that the new hoist was a necessity, and now we will have the funds to purchase one.

Rainbow Beach State School leads the way Principal Dan Stanieg

AST MONTH, Elli from Gympie Regional Council and Ivan from National Parks visited our school to participate in our Clean Up Australia Day. They discussed the effects of litter on our environment and the ways we can help minimise this litter.

Elli carries around a bottle as big as a honey jar that carries her non-recyclable rubbish for one year. It is a great effort and blows my mind every time I see it.

After the discussion, the whole school participated in cleaning around our school.

I was surprised by the amount of rubbish we collected and the unusual objects that made their way back to school, including a rusty car radiator. Some students made the connection that the rubbish being dumped maybe due to the fees at the Refuse Centre.

Year 6 students participated in a Leadership Camp at Tallebudgera on the Gold Coast. Our students left their familiar surroundings behind and embarked on a journey, where they were challenged and participated in new experiences.

Our Gympie Alliance schools participated in a fundraiser for the flood victims in North Queensland.

Rainbow Beach State School’s Free Dress Day raised over a $100 and contributed

Discovering Robotics

By Grace Muggleton, Ocean Banko, Harmonie Milesi, Sienna Farrow and Lauren Lewis On March 11, the sensational Year Sixes went on an exciting Science and Engineering excursion to the Gympie Showgrounds. They joined seven other schools before being split into different coloured groups to compete in two different challenges.

Activities included building and testing a Mars buggy, robotic hands, engineering a bridge and building a chair to meet set requirements.

One of the Tin Can Bay teams that built the robotic hand found it very challenging, but they worked as a team, didn’t give up and were successful in winning third place at the event.

Overall it was a great day and we recommend having it again next year.

The Junior Sports Captains have been organising sports activities to prepare for the the P-3 Fun Run to be held on Tuesday April 2 in the Junior Play Area.

Taking a Stand as a Team On Friday March 15, our school took part in the National Day Against Bullying. Students were invited to sign pledges against bullying which were then joined to make a paper chain and displayed in the school library.

All the students participated from Prep to Grade 10 on this special day, wearing an orange wristband, while staff wore orange ribbons to raise awareness.

Throughout our SEL lessons students have worked on activities about what bullying is and isn’t and how making a stand together is more powerful than standing alone.

Coloured Sands Starting below the lookout, walk along the beach towards Double Island Point for a kilometre or so to these amazing Coloured sand cliffs, with the best colours around 9 to 10 kilometres along the beach (accessible with a 4wd or Surf and Sand Safari tour) 5486 3131.

Carlo Sand Blow A bush walk up to Carlo Sand Blow is a must for every visitor. Drive to the reservoir at the top of Cooloola Drive. The Blow is an easy 600m walk from the car park or take the longer walk from the National Parks Office. Spectacular views of the Coloured Sands, Double Island Point and Tin Can Bay Inlet are the bonus for your efforts. When the thermals are right, you will often see Hang Gliders taking off and landing at this beautiful piece of Nature’s Sculpture.

Fraser Island Great Walk A 90 km trail which showcases natural and cultural features of the world’s largest sand island as it meanders between Dilli Village and Happy Valley www.nprsr.qld.gov.au/ parks/great - walks-fraser-island/about. html Cooloola Great Walk A 102 km trail which passes through a rich diversity of vegetation types with spectacular views, connecting Rainbow Beach with Noosa North Shore. www.nprsr.qld.gov.au/parks/ greatwalkscooloola/ index.html Rainforest Walk / Bymien Picnic Area A few kilometres from town, on the Gympie Road, take the Freshwater Road to the left. 3km on a good gravel surface will bring you to Bymien, which is the limit for conventional vehicles.

Lake Poona After morning tea or lunch in the picnic area you can venture on some wonderful walks to Lake Poona or through some spectacular Rainforest. Allow 40 minutes to reach Lake Poona.

Lake Freshwater Only accessible by 4WD, Tour or Walking. Walking tracks starts at the Bymien picnic area. The round trip from Rainbow Beach will take a full day and requires fitness.

Foreshore Tin Can Bay You can walk 4km from Crabs Creek to Norman Point, over picturesque bridges, signage of flora and fauna, through mangroves, playgrounds and outdoor gyms. It is mostly flat – very safe for children on wheels. Start at the playground opposite the library, cycle to Crabs Creek and stop for a coffee, then return to opposite the library. Enjoy the views out to the inlet while the kids enjoy the playground and skatepark.

Rainbow Beach 10,000 steps walk – from the headland behind the Surf Tower and Playground to Carlo Road. Paths are perfect for bicycles, scooters and skateboards.

Beach fishing has unlimited scope with nearly 100kms of beach to choose from.

Varieties include Bream, Whiting, Tailor, Dart, Jew and Flathead.

Estuary fishing in Tin Can Bay Inlet, through the Inskip Point area and up the Great Sandy Strait is perfect for those with a boat or the wish to hire one. Access is from an efficient boat ramp at Carlo Point.

I ALL, it’s been a crazy month weather wise again, but as I am writing this we are having a run of nice calm weather with some much needed afternoon storms, which is giving everyone much needed rain.

We have managed a few trips out over the last week and fishing has been great,

Large parrot are in numbers along with pearl perch. Some cracker sweetlip also have come on board.

I was notified several months ago that we had quite a few people put nominations in for the 2019 Enterprise Awards that had been out and were extremely happy with their day, I wasn’t sure what this actually meant however accepted the nominations.

The event was held in Sydney recently and Rainbow Beach Fishing Charters was judged and awarded Winner for best Fishing Charter in the Wide Bay Burnett region.

To all those who have appreciated our efforts even through the tough times, a big thank you.

We are looking forward to another great season with plenty of fun trips.

Tin Can Bay Fishing Club Report HAT A DIFFERENCE a month can make!

The mangrove jack that were feeding so aggressively a month ago, during that really hot weather, have become elusive now the weather and water temperature have begun to cool.

The strong winds and less-than friendly seas from the cyclone made fishing nearly impossible for more than a week giving an opportunity for a bit of boat and fishing gear maintenance. The bream, whiting and flathead have been a bit hit-and-miss lately with only occasional decent catches.

The mud crabs seem to be less active than they were but I guess that you can only catch and eat them once, and the last few months has seen exceptionally good catches, plus our holiday visitors also made a real hole in their numbers.

There are still a few early season squid

around to be caught by those who are putting the time in to find where they are on the day. There have been moderate catches of reef species when the tide and wind allow fishing on the ledges and reefs.

Quite a few Nannygai are being taken on the inside reefs lately but be aware of the legal sizes and bag limits. Large schools of good size tuna have been seen actively feeding on the bait fish around the Inskip and Big Mick areas, this activity should increase as the weather cools.

There seems to be increasing numbers of turtles not only in the deeper channels but also in the creeks, so please be on the lookout while traveling as they can be difficult to see, particularly if the water is a bit choppy.

Bullock Point woes A CONCERNED local, who likes to fish off the pontoon at Bullock Point has advised us that boats have been left at the floating walkway, making it difficult for others to use.

He advised Cr Mark McDonald and Transport and Main Roads (TMR), and said although it improved - his favourite fishing spot is now unavailable again.

He said the walkway is also covered with nets on occasion, which makes it difficult for recreational fishermen.

Cr Mark told RBCCCN that this was

reported that day, and he will call it in again to TMR. Fishing spots like this are limited on this side of the bay - it is a private jetty and it is illegal to fish off the boat ramp. Again it opens up the wishes of the community for a jetty on the coast, and if facilities are adequate for commercial fishers in our area?

TMR are aware of the issue and are currently liaising with the facility manager, Gympie Regional Council, to find a resolution.

A booking! Unless you choose free camping, book ahead. Easter is THE peak time for camping across Australia. Check the book or App and phone ahead. If you have pets, let them know - there are many sites which are pet friendly except in peak periods.

Leave early! The early bird may not catch the worm, but they will be able to secure a site! Easter traffic can be horrendous from a city, and you could be rewarded with that perfect spot, right by a river or view!

Easter egg hunts around the campsite are also fun if you have children with you - so bring some little foil wrapped eggs that will do the trick.

GPS POI If you like travelling with a GPS, why not access the latest POI data for a whole range of satellite navigation devices.

Insect repellent, sunscreen, togs?

Warmer clothes for night time? Make sure it is all on one checklist. Better still, you will use that one list again and again. (Parents and carers, we would give a list to each child, so they can tick off each item, as they top up their own gear. I checked through the list with them as they added each item into their bag. Win, win!)

Zac from Victory College, will travel to Stradbroke Island in August for the State titles.

OMPETITION FIVE will have been completed by the time you read this Community News, and the celebrations done and dusted, but when this article was written there was still one round to go and the table was tighter than a rusted bolt.

After seven weeks of frenetic competition, skill was being challenged by attendance in terms of establishing ladder position, but that’s the way it runs in Rainbow Beach.

The level one table, with one round to go saw Jack McColl 61, Daniel Dinoia 58,

Heatley Gilmore 54, Brad Hethorn 47, Michael Brantz 46, Dave Arthur (reigning champion) 41, Allan Wegner 39, Kirsty McCarthy 37 and Marty Baldry 35.

The level two table was Pam Runnegar (reigning champion) 66, Trish Torenbeek and Lyn Bleakley together on 47, Tina McColl 45, James Worthington 40, Archie Gilmore 30, Peter Fuller 21 and James Runnegar 12. Results and photos of victors and vanquished in the next edition.

FTER RAINBOW Beach Cricket Club finishes the regular season in a solid second position only a few points behind Wests, hopes of becoming reserve grade champions were high. Rainbow’s first finals clash saw them take on Wests for an automatic place in the grand final.

The team made the trip into Gympie and prepared themselves for a tough battle against the boys in Green.

Captain Merv O’neill lost the toss and Rainbow Beach were sent out to bat first.

On a tough wicket Rainbow Beach did well to make 125 runs while losing nine wickets, with Mark Alexander top scoring with 20 of 12 deliveries.

Rainbow Beach then showed incredible passion in the field bowling Wests out for the small total of 82 runs, Mark Alexander took three wickets and won the game for Rainbow Beach sending them into the grand final two weeks later.

Two weeks on and Rainbow Beach are once again traveling into Gympie to play. This time the stakes much higher, the grand final against fourth place finishers Gympie Colts.

The boys travelled into Gympie on the bus with victory thoughts in mind.

Lattanzi, taking three wickets respectively, Colts made 125 runs. Rainbow Beach then struggled on a tough wicket and ultimately fell short of the total by as few as 16 runs.

Dragon boat regattas for April W

HILE WE DIDN’T bring home any “bling” from the Te Waka regatta, our Open 10’s paddling was nice and strong, and was up with the other teams, even though we had only three men in our boat while other boats had more men. A great job done by all paddlers!

Only five more sleeps and two more training sessions, weather permitting, before the State Title at Kawana. We are feeling fit and ready to go! While we enjoy competing and being on the water, we love

being away for the weekend as a team.

April 6 see the start of the Wide Bay Series of regattas which is a series of five regattas between Bundaberg on April 6, then Hervey Bay, Cooloola, 1770 and Burnett River. The Cooloola Dragons regatta at TCB is a great event which will be held on July 20/21.

Many teams will converge on Tin Can Bay to participate in this regatta so mark these dates in your calendar - it will be a great weekend of Dragon Boating, We are always looking for new members

especially men as they usually make up the “engine room” of the boat! Ladies, we are looking for you too! It is a great way of getting and keeping fit - just being on the water is the bonus.

A Little Humour MIND FOR MATHS Three old men are at the doctor for a memory test. The doctor says to the first old man, “What is three times three?”

“274” was his reply.

The doctor worriedly says to the second man, “It’s your turn. What is three times three?”

“Tuesday” replies the second man.

The doctor sadly says to the third man, “Okay, your turn. What’s three times three”?

“Nine” says the third man.

“That’s great!” exclaims the doctor.

“How did you get that”?

“Jeez, Doc, it’s pretty simple,” says the third man. “I just subtracted 274 from Tuesday.”

FROZEN CARBURETOR People often complain about the police, but you rarely hear about the positive things they do, such as this incident involving a biker and a frozen carburetor.

Last January on a bitterly cold winter’s day, a North Dakota State Trooper on patrol came upon a motorcyclist who was stalled by the roadside. The biker was swathed in heavy clothing and wearing a full-face helmet for protection from the cold weather.

“What’s the matter? asked the Trooper.

“Carburetor frozen,” was the terse reply.

“Pee on it. That’ll thaw it out.”

“I can’t,” said the biker.

“OK, watch me closely and I’ll show you.” The Trooper unzipped and promptly warmed the carburetor as promised.

Moments later the bike started and the rider drove off, waving.

A few days later, the local State Troopers’ office received a note of thanks from the father of the motorcyclist.

“Are you the manager?” she asks, softly stroking his face with both hands.

“Actually, no” the man replied.

“Can you get him for me? I need to speak to him,” she says, running her hands beyond his beard and into his hair. “I’m afraid I can’t,” breathes the bartender, “Is there anything I can do?”

“Yes there is. I need you to give him a message,” she continues, running her forefinger across the bartender’s lips and slyly popping a couple of her fingers into his mouth, allowing him to suck them gently.

“What should I tell him?” the bartender manages to say.

“Tell him,” she whispers, “there is no toilet paper, hand soap or paper towels in the ladies room”.

LAWYERS DON’T LIE A lawyer, who had a wife and 12 children, needed to move because his rental agreement was terminated by the owner who wanted to reoccupy the home.

But he was having a lot of difficulty finding a new house.

When he said he had 12 children, no one would rent a home to him because they felt that the children would destroy the place.

He couldn’t say he had no children, because he couldn’t lie as we all know lawyers cannot and do not lie.

So, he sent his wife for a walk to the cemetery with 11 of their kids.

He took the remaining one with him to see rental homes with the real estate agent.

He loved one of the homes and the price was right - the agent asked: “How many children do you have?

He answered: “Twelve.”

The agent asked, “Where are the others?”

The lawyer, with his best courtroom sad look answered “They’re in the cemetery with their mother.”

MORAL: It’s not necessary to lie, one only has to choose the right words...and don’t forget, most politicians are lawyers.

Hello again from all at the IGA, Well doesn’t a fine weekend make a difference, even though there isn’t much beach (apparently something to do with a cyclone we didn’t get)? Anyway, more to do with climate change, perhaps? I really don’t get into that debate.

The amount of ac vity going on in Rainbow over the next month is great. With Easter, ANZAC Day, Rodeo and the Hot Rod Show, there won’t be any me available for work!

On one other note, it is always sad to see a business struggle.

Not only does it impact those that may own the business, but all the employees, their families and also the wider community at large. My heart goes out to those that have been affected and we are hoping for a resolu on that helps all involved.

Tony Stewart was to head off west again to help out all the farmers s ll under drought, but hopefully he may have to put it off for a few weeks as it looks like they may be having some rain. Let’s just hope and pray.

Jus n - 5m outside the box on the right-hand side - looks up and puts the ball top le� hand corner to win the game, and progress to the next stage. It’s great to see such a good side come out of the Gympie Region –best of luck, boys.

I’m not sure the same can be said for Daniel Ricciardo, let’s see if the Renault can last the whole race this me.

Ange couldn’t stay away too long as she has been over at Tin Can helping out Bernie and Jus n. Each week it’s ge ng busier and busier which is terrific for everyone.

Liam and Jess brought bubs up for a nana-play the other day, already crawling and nearly walking. Time does seem to go so quickly.

Paul moved to Brisbane to start a shopfi ng appren ceship, he sounds like he’s having a ball. I think I’ve got a place to stay when we go to the football now, which bring me to the sports report.

Thank God the footy (sport) has started. A�er all the offseason dramas and the way the salary cap is trying to bring the teams closer together… Now we can look forward to another cracker season ahead.
