’VE HAD A LOVELY month back on the newspaper, organising stories and photos for you!

We showcase the Big Summer Blowout (Thirsty Merc are still my favourite - but Reece Mastin comes a close second), and the exciting Patrol Teams Challenge both held on the same day! Don’t you just love our vibrant markets? It is always good to chat to locals and the different clubs that come along. I found some bargains at the CWA garage sale, too! I talk about my thrilling visit to the Army, we reveal the lyrics for the new school song and show off some Nipper action - thanks Julie Pratt! It was also pleasing to hear the last month’s housing article has created some discussion - wouldn’t it be good to have some proactive outcomes. I also heard from Nicola at Cooloola Coast Furniture and Bedding whose older floor stock cleared out because of her ad, and how a little massage listing paid for itself four times over in the first week! Thanks Bec from the Rainbow Beach Gym - you were well rewarded as the first business to list in the new Visitor Guide.

AINBOW BEACH State School is planning to hold an Easter Bonnet Parade on the final Term 1 assembly on Thursday, April 1. They encourage families to get creative in making the best Easter bonnets possible. The Student Council is sourcing prizes to be awarded on the day. They welcome KindyLinQ and Playgroup children to be involved as well!

There will also be live entertainment from 5pm till 9pm, with raffles between 6pm – 7pm and on Saturday April 3 from 8pm.

AINBOW BEACH Sports Club will be raffling off an Easter hamper, drawn Thursday April 1. Tickets are available from the main bar, during their normal raffles.

Live music is on every Friday in April, except Good Friday when the Sports Club and bottle shop will be closed and will re-open Saturday, April 3.

HE ANNUAL Easter collection is the Tin Can Bay Coastguard’s biggest single event of the year, where the passing motorists, both local and tourist, are encouraged to stop and donate. After a Covid cancellation in 2020, luckily, this year looks as though they are right to resume. Flotilla Commander, John Macfarlane, has been with our coast guard for almost 24 years. He says, “For a one-off event, it is a major fundraiser. When I was treasurer we would go 24 hours for three-to-four days; we raised $17,000 one year. But if it was $10-11,000 we were very happy! “It depends on how it falls for the school holidays, people travelling to the island or if the island or Inskip are closed.” As always, they would be most grateful for any contribution over that time. After the wipeout last year, they would love to achieve a target of $10,000. Coast Guard has been saving lives and boats in the Cooloola region for over 40 years. Members have to raise about 80% of the funding required to provide this valuable community service and ensure they are always ready to help in a marine emergency.

Donations go toward training volunteers, fuel, maintenance of the vessels and even providing for their replacement. Look out for the collectors wearing Coast Guard uniforms and high-viz vests who will be setting up in two locations from Wednesday March 31 to Sunday April 4 at the Rainbow Beach turnoff, and also along the Tin Can Bay road near the school. “We’ll be out to give it a push. The money goes a long way!” said John.

NZAC DAY is a National Day of Remembrance. April 25 was the day when Australian and New Zealand Army Corps landed on the Gallipoli Peninsula in 1915 to set out and capture the Gallipoli Peninsula in order to open the Dardanelles to the Allied Navies. This campaign was a disaster with more than 11,000 casualties and 25,500 wounded. In 1916 April 25 was officially named ANZAC Day. To enable the community to attend and pay their respects and honour the service and sacrifices of all Service men and women and their families, the Rainbow Beach RSL Sub-Branch will be conducting the following ceremonies: 4.15am - Dawn Service at the Cenotaph followed by a Gunfire Breakfast at the Surf

Club (limited numbers as dictated by COVID requirements). 9.45am - Form up for the Street March on the Centre Block followed by the Citizens Commemoration of ANZAC Day. This year is a significant year for the Australian Defence Force being the 100th Anniversary of The Royal Australian Air Force, the 80th Anniversary of the Rats of Tobruk and the 55th Anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan. All spectators and participants are requested to abide with the protocols of COVID requirements and heed any directions given by the COVID Marshalls. This is a legal requirement. Also be on the lookout for local identity Johno who will be selling ANZAC memorabilia.

VERYONE AT Tin Can Bay RSL is looking forward to ANZAC Day 2021 after ANZAC Day 2020 was so impacted by Covid19. The ANZAC Day programme will commence with the Dawn Service at 5.30am, followed by the Gunfire Breakfast at 6.30am. The march to the Memorial and Wreath Laying Ceremony will commence at 8.30am, followed by the Tin Can Bay Citizen’s

Memorial Service at 9.40am. After these formal ceremonies a sausage sizzle, refreshments and other activities often associated with ANZAC Day will be available at the rear of the sub-branch. The whole community is invited so please come along and make ANZAC Day 2021 a day to remember. The Tin Can Bay Memorial will be the venue for the Wreath Laying Ceremony on ANZAC Day.

HAVE LIVED on our coast for over 15 years. I’ve heard the ‘booms’ in Rainbow Beach from the Army training. Our daughter worked there a couple of years back - but the closest I’ve ever been is to the gate. When I read the 2/14 Light Horse Regiment (Queensland Mounted Infantry) will be conducting a live fire exercise at Wide Bay Training Area, I didn’t hesitate! Two TV crews and I were met at Camp Kerr, and followed the officers in convoy along Tin Can Bay Road, through that gate along a track to another boom gate. I parked exactly where I was supposed to because I was told the force of the firing has been known to ‘affect’ windscreens! After a safety briefing; double plugging

our ears - we perched up on the tower balcony ready to watch, with students and Indigenous elders. The tanks were over 50 metres away, and you could just see Carlo Sandblow. There was a lot of preparation but pretty soon the ‘t-t-t-t’ firing began. The big tanks scanned for targets and conducted ‘serial’ fire which were timed and scored. I was really glad my elbows were on the balcony ledge when I heard the first BOOM! Wow - I’ll post the videos, but they don’t do it justice. Eventually, the tank drove off the concrete firing bays to the field below - aiming and firing. Two of the crew chatted to us afterwards. I asked where they will serve on ANZAC Day? Holidays? Make a sandcastle! Visitors and locals - come along to a family friendly sandcastle competition, held Wednesday April 7. It’s only $10 a team, BYO bucket and spade plus all profits are to the Rainbow Beach P&C. Registration is from 8.30am on the beach, north of the SLS tower. Building starts at 9am. Watch Sandshapers of Noosa creating a large sand sculpture. They will judge the various categories around low tide at 11am with prize presentations at 11.30am. Children can also enter the sandcastle colouring competition! Entries were sent home with the school newsletter. The first 50 children to bring their completed entries along on the day will receive a fun voucher! Plus be eligible for the best entry prize per age group: under 5, 6-9 and 10-12. P&C members are looking forward to the event and thank Chappy for bringing it back to town - come and see them at the sausage sizzle! Drinks will be for sale as well. A new state champion!

RAINBOW BEACH Nipper, Sienna Arthur, won gold for the Under 12 Female Flags at the Queensland State Youth Championships. Held at North Kirra last month, it was the first State Title for their age group, after Covid ruled out the 2020 event. Her father, Dave, and step mum, Suzie, were unable to attend due to recent illness, but she had Grandfather Paul and ex Rainbow Beach champion Simon Pascoe helping out. Simon was the last Rainbow Beach Nipper to win a Queensland title in 1992. Dave and Simon competed together in the ‘90s coming first and second respectively at the Australian Titles in 1994. Dave said, “I can’t thank Simon enough for this and it shows that the bonds forged in Rainbow Beach Club live on forever. It was special to see the current Queensland champ and the last Queensland champ working together.” Dave won many Queensland and Australian competitions at men’s level through to 2002. Sienna is a ‘chip off the old block’, who has focused her training on technique and acceleration. A natural athlete, Sienna’s wins include the Rugby League Broncos Challenge for RBSS and a silver medal for Tin Can Bay School in the volleyball state titles.

A Wide Bay soccer representative for State, she has just been selected in the 15 years Wide Bay Soccer Team (as a 12-year-old!) and with her sister Keira, trains for volleyball with the Queensland Academy of Sport. Out of 105 starting athletes, Sienna braved the heat and soft sand for nearly three hours. The commentators announced: “She was dominant throughout. She got up very quickly and got in front from the start.” After the win, Sienna told the interviewers: “It was

amazing, nerve wracking. Dad’s in hospital, I had to do this for my Dad.” The family thank Rainbow Beach Surf Club and volunteers with a special shout out to age managers, Kirsty and Marty. As the commentators said, it was good to see our distinctive Rainbow cap in there! Sienna, you did your club and your family proud. Congratulations!

A spectacular of flying

HE TIN CAN BAY Model Flying Club is a hive of activity preparing the field and facilities for the Australian Large Scale Fly In. The club will host the Fly In so everything must be ready for a large number of pilots, ground crew and of course, aircraft. Preparation is full-on because this is our first public event in over a year due to Covid. The models on display will be some of the largest in Australia. Both piston, electric and jet turbine engines will be powering these lovingly constructed models so there

will be some spectacular flying demonstrations. The club will also have the Spitfire canteen open and serving. If a burger and chips takes your fancy, just swing by with your appetite. It is recommended you bring chairs and sun protection. It’s on the Labour Day Weekend, May 1-2 at the Tin Can Bay Model Flying Club, 15 Rifle Fish Road. AST MONTH, Josh Arnold and his Small Town Culture production crew visited Rainbow Beach.

Josh said, “Every week I get to visit different small schools and communities throughout regional Australia and tell their story with a song and music video, with the locals as the stars of the production. Pretty awesome job, hey?” “Most of my work is out west in small country towns who have a close-knit community. So, when I was invited to Rainbow Beach State School I didn’t know what to expect because I rarely get to make music videos near the ocean.” So how did the visit come about? Principal, Steve Bennett, told the Community News, “I knew, having worked with Josh previously, the way he was able to provide an opportunity for all students, but particularly those that are creative and musical, with an avenue to shine. “The way he can tease from the students what is important to them and create an anthem that connects children to our community. You can’t underestimate the sense of belonging as a contributor to wellbeing.” Steve said that after the impacts and stress of COVID lockdowns the school, “needed a way to boost spirits and community pride. Something I recognise as being uniquely strong and special to Rainbow Beach.” And Josh saw this, too. He said, “Before I even set foot on

the sand, fell off a surfboard and caught a glimpse of the spectacular scenery, I got to know the kids and some local parents. The Bay to Bay is back! T

HE BAY TO BAY is an annual yacht race from Tin Can Bay Yacht Club to Hervey Bay, run by the Hervey Bay Yacht Club. The race is on the first weekend in May and is conducted over two days with an overnight stay at Garry’s anchorage. The first race was held in 1980 and this year will be the 40th event, having been cancelled last year like many events, due to Covid 19. There were 30 boats expected for the first race and 114 turned up. Numbers of boats have been as high as 230 but on average there is now about 140. The Yacht Club Bar and Bistro will be open on the Friday night prior to the race and on Saturday morning for breakfast. Come and enjoy drinks and dinner on the deck and watch the preparations for the start of the race on Saturday morning. Depending on wind direction, if there is a spinnaker run from the start, it is a spectacular sight with colourful spinnakers flying. D’S BEACH BAKERY has changed hands! Congratulations to Rod and Sharon Parker and to new owners Kathy and Steven! Sharon was smiling, “We were welcomed to Rainbow Beach 15 years ago to start a new life and business. “It’s now our time to move on to a new chapter in our lives. We’re moving back to the southside of Brisbane to be closer to our two sons and their wives and being grandparents to our five grandchildren.” Does this mean retirement? “Not retiring,” said Sharon. “Rod is back to work for our son driving trucks and excavators. This is what he was doing before we moved up here, and when we were in Covid lockdown, last year. “But I’m so looking forward to working for wages, not having to worry about ordering stock, paying wages, staff, and all the other responsibilities that come with running/owning a business!”

Is Little Eddie staying? Yes, he is! One of Sharon’s memorable moments over the years is Little Eddie joining them at a Rainbow Beach Fishing Classic, and posting Little Eddie’s Fishing Adventures nightly. Rod learnt on the job baking our daily bread, scoring awards for his pies and apprentice bakers! Both Parkers worked ridiculous hours, through the night and early mornings and this coming Easter will be much more relaxed for them than it has been for the last decadeand-a-half! “I really want the community to know much we appreciate and are grateful for the support from our loyal customers over that time,” said Sharon. “The new owners will receive the same support the town has given us.” Rod and Sharon - you always supported the school and brekky club, Nippers and fundraisers! Your treats are part of our family history, as well as our visitors. We’d like to thank you, too!

What he means is, all profits back then and now, have been channelled into making our beaches safe. The Rainbow Beach Surf Club is a fundraiser for our lifesaving patrols, and each upgrade over the years helps our lifesavers and funnels even more cash into the volunteer service. “We’ve been building in stages so that we can handle the financial burden,” John said. “This is a 6-8 week build - just the deck at this stage, with an internal fit-out at a later date. “We should be able to seat another 120 on the deck, undercover, and with uninterrupted views from Fraser Island to Double Island Point. Everything is tailored to maximise the views we have here, and utilise it as best we can.” Dean and Robina McEwan, from DRM Constructions, started the build in 2013 with the stage 1 - dormitory block, toilets/ utilities and downstairs office. John says the next stage will hopefully be six-to-twelve months after the deck is finished. The pokies room will be relocated where the old toilets were, and a cafe and a whole new entry made out of the old office.

S I STOOD on the side of Rainbow Beach Road last week, directing traffic around another serious car crash, I started thinking about my last article and how I had mentioned déjà vu. Now, less than two months later, I’m looking at another hunk of scrap metal, which had been a nice car an hour earlier. That was before it left the road, hit a tree and rolled over a couple of times – definitely déjà vu…

The two occupants miraculously escaped serious injury, but it could have been much, much worse. I’m sure you’ve all heard about the ‘Fatal Five’ behaviours that cause (or contribute to) most of the serious traffic incidents and deaths on our roads. Most people can name four of them quite easily – speeding, drink / drug driving, seatbelts and fatigue – but what about number five?

Phebalium woombye

HE CITY FARM Plant of the Month is “Phebalium woombye”, pink variety. This is a small to medium shrub to about 2 metres high by 1.5 metres wide although completely prostate forms exist. The leaves are oblong to elliptical, up to

50mm long x 10mm wide, green above and silvery underneath. The individual pink flowers are five petalled and relatively small, but they occur in clusters of up to ten and are very conspicuous. Flowering usually occurs in late winter and spring. The species requires a welldrained moist soil, preferably in semi shade but full sun is tolerated. Established plants seem adaptable to extended dry periods and are resistant to at least moderate frost. Given the increase of serious traffic incidents and deaths attributed to the inattention of drivers, driver distraction was added to the fatal list in 2012, and it changed from the Fatal Four to the Fatal Five. Distraction from mobile phone use is the major contributor to this category but taking your focus off the road for even a second - for any reason – increases your risk of having a serious crash.

And that’s exactly what happened to this young bloke. He was doing everything right (under the speed limit, seatbelt on, hadn’t been drinking) but took his focus off the road for just a second at the wrong time, and the next thing he can remember is climbing out of his wrecked car through the windscreen. Pay attention on our roads – it could save your life!

Cooloola Coastcare and FIDO (the Fraser Island Defenders Organisation) host notable scientists from across Australia at the annual Cooloola BioBlitz, May 14-16. You’re invited to join them as they seek to understand the nature of our unique region by exploring the Cooloola Recreation area and Inskip Point regions, visiting many biodiversity hotspots. A BioBlitz is an intense period of biological surveying in an attempt to record all the living species within a designated area. For 48 hours you can join guided walks with scientists and naturalists to learn about local species of plants, animals, fungi and insects. Have fun and you will learn a lot, as well as contribute to the official record of species in our area. In the past two events, 81 new species unknown to science have been discovered including spiders, moths and even a new sub-species of tree. Limited tickets are available for a special Sci-art program that will feature renowned

ORLD DAY of Prayer for the people of Vanuatu was celebrated at the Good Shepherd Church Rainbow Beach, one of 180 centres just around Queensland. The world-wide service was prepared by the women of Vanuatu with the theme ‘Build on a strong foundation’. It was a wonderful occasion of ecumenical fellowship with 41 people from seven churches of the Cooloola Coast participating. Chappy Ronnie brought five of the student leaders from the Rainbow Beach School, with Skye and Charlotte speaking on Vanuatu during the service. James had the honour of cutting the special cake, made by Rainbow’s muchtalented Ann Thornton, which depicted in icing the beautiful artwork on the front of

ELL, HOW GREAT it was to see everyone on the International Women’s Day Twilight Walk. We had 77 walkers all meeting at the end for a well-earned coffee, biscuits and fruit served by the CWA. The first walk was held by QCWA in 1922, a tradition to this day. A special day for two of our members celebrating their birthdays, Jess and Linda, and thank you to everyone involved. We had excellent donations for our QCWA Tin Can Bay Branch Garage Sale - the hall was full of treasured items, thank you to all the community. We are still concentrating on domestic

HEALTH Briefs Walking is a “wonder drug” The Australian Heart Maps data shows about 76% of adults in Gympie are not physically active enough, which is significantly higher than the national average (66%). Lack of exercise is a leading risk factor for heart disease, and Australian Heart Maps statistics show Wide Bay is among Australia’s 10 least active regions (ranking fifth). Almost three in four (74.4%) adults are not physically active enough in this region, which includes the Bundaberg, Fraser Coast, Gympie, Cherbourg, North Burnett, and South Burnett LGAs.

The Heart Foundation has a plan to make Queensland more walking friendly with wider footpaths, more shade and well-lit pathways, plus safe pedestrian crossings. Trials of temporary road closures for pedestrian-access-only events, and programs that encourage walking to school and public transport, are among other proposals to get people moving. Patrolled Beach Swim in the flags in front of the Surf Lifesaving tower. Walk via the steps or walkway near the lookout and surf club, or drive onto Griffin Esplanade. 4WD beach access begins here.

Coloured Sands Visit the patrolled beach, near the surf tower or the lookout to see the 70 plus colours in our cliffs. From town, walk south 1km along the beach - for best colours 4WD or tour a further 9km. Remember it is a gazetted road.

Carlo Sand Blow Park at the top of Cooloola Drive, and walk 600m up from the car park or bushwalk about 2km from the National Parks Office for spectacular views of the Coloured Sands, Double Island Point, Tin Can Bay Inlet and hang gliders.

Poona Lake Drive to Bymien Picnic Area (2WD) via 3km gravel on the Freshwater Road, (off Rainbow Beach Road). It’s a 40 minute walk to reach the cool waters of Lake Poona through beautiful rainforest and carrol (grey myrtle) scrub.

Searys Creek Only 7km from town towards Gympie, with 2 waterholes, boardwalks, bridges and history – do read the sign and spot the creatures. Always cool on the hottest of days.

Rainbow Beach Headland A look out, a viewing platform, 2 playgrounds, a skatepark, BBQs and picnic facilities. See the whales from here in season and watch the surfers out the front. Take a photo at the Cherry Venture propeller.

Double Island Point Access via the 4WD only Great Beach Drive or Freshwater Track. See dolphins, whales (seasonal), manta rays, turtles and walk up to our historic lighthouse. It has the longest break in Australia -when the swell lines up.

Mudlo Rocks Wander here at low tide, play in rock pools and watch 4WDs navigate any exposed rocks. ALWAYS check conditions and ask locals before you 4WD - it is not always safe, even close to low tide.

Middle Rock When tides and conditions allow, the walk to Middle Rock and back is a beautiful way to check out the Coloured Sands. From here, vehicle permits are required and dogs are prohibited.

Inskip Point

Enjoy Poona Lake whilst it’s still warm enough for a dip!

Tin Can Bay Wildflower Walk Known for spectacular wildflower species, access this trail from the corner of Emperor St and Oyster Parade. Best in late winter and early spring.

Boat Ramps

This peninsula is the gateway to Fraser Island, a favourite fishing spot and pet friendly camping grounds for generations. Only 15 minutes drive (2WD) from Rainbow Beach.

You can launch your boat at Norman Point and Crab Creek in Tin Can Bay or Carlo Point and Bullock Point near Rainbow Beach. All except Bullock Point offer toilet and scenic picnic facilities.

A baby dolphin! I

GUESS YOU have all heard that we have a new “baby” in town. Ella produced a calf on March 8. We still do not know what sex the calf is, however the calf has been given a name as Shadow. This name was put forward from our researcher Deane Jones. It seemed appropriate that the calf received this name over other suggestions as Deane has given the Dolphin Centre many years of information from his research on the Australian Humpbacks and in particular the community of dolphins within our area. Shadow is a lively strong little dolphin and has some markings which will distinguish him/her from other calves. The calf seems to have a dark strip on top of the rostrum and several faint stripes extending to the blowhole. These markings may disappear but we hope they stay. Crowds are building, especially on weekends, as the word gets out about the birth. Ella, as an older dolphin mother, surely has her work cut out looking after such a lIvely dolphin. We open at 7am and have viewing of the dolphins until around 7.45am. This gives visitors a chance to hear all about the history and attributes of our Australian Humpback dolphins. Photography is welcomed. As this goes to print we must report that we have not seen Mystique for several weeks. This is unusual so we hope he is okay. We do miss his entertaining antics.

OOLOOLA COAST Probus members have been out enjoying each other’s company. An informative morning was spent at the Wallu Nursery, where Kevin and Lois Thornley answered many questions and showed our group around their nursery. They were so welcoming and so interesting to speak to. They have developed a block that was a grassy cattle run into the magnificent gardens they have there now, and have a wide range of plants for sale, but also do landscaping. Travelling on the Mary Valley Rattler to Amamoor was fun for all, with lots of

happy chatter as we rode out along the valley. The museum at the station is well worth a visit, the volunteers were wonderful, and we lunched on the railway platform upon our return to Gympie. Lunch in Maryborough and attending a concert at the Brolga Theatre is planned in April. Meetings are held on each second Monday of the month at 2pm at the Sandcastle Motel in Tin Can Bay. Blowouts and Bullying, Litter and League By Principal Steve Bennett Rainbow Beach State School

AM VERY pleased to advise that I have been successful in my application to remain Acting Principal for the remainder of the year. There was a State-wide process run recently to determine the Acting Principal for Terms 2, 3 and 4. I am very happy to have the opportunity to lead Rainbow Beach State School and I will continue my attention on achieving the best possible outcomes for the staff, students and the wider school community.

Over $1,600 raised at the Big Summer Blowout We were invited to raise some funds for the P&C by helping with waste management and keeping the amenities clean at the Big Summer Blowout Concert held on the centre block in town. We had a very small army of helpers who worked tirelessly throughout the day albeit listening to some good music as we went. I would like to give a big shout out to Jed Elmer, Sandra Lindenberg, Karin Shearman, Team Bergin and Team Treloar (The owners of Salty Gear, which is available at Gardiners Fisheries). Our Assistant Regional Director, Mrs Janelle Reid, and her husband, Don, also came down to give us a hand. To these people I offer a heartfelt and sincere thanks, especially those without children at this school. This effort raised $664 in can and bottle recycling, plus a donation of $1000. Clean-Up Australia Day Our school took part in the Clean-up Australia Day event. Thank you to Tyla Elmer for her help in organising and registering

our participation. We had the older children lap the school block and the Prep/1 class concentrated their effort inside the gate. We are very proud of how little rubbish was found in the school vicinity but surprised of the amount of glass around the road edges. Everyone involved is to be congratulated, especially given how hot that morning was. Thanks again!

District Rugby League I had the pleasure of taking students into Gympie for the Under 11 District Rugby League trials. All four boys - James Bergin, Sonny Bennett, Blake Findlater and Sebastian Sanderson did extremely well. They were amongst 70 students from across the Gympie Region to try out, playing four games before being reduced to the top 24. Both Sonny and Blake made the possible and probables, playing off in the final game

Bullying No Way Our school took part in the National Day of Action - Bullying No Way. On this day students are encouraged to wear orange, or something close to it. We planned a number of activities and lessons for students. This was a great opportunity for us to celebrate our school culture and to recognise the amazing behaviour of our children.

Mushrooms, Rubbish and Volleyball By Tin Can Bay State P-10 School

Classes 5A and 6A visit a mushroom farm

HEN WE THINK of mushrooms, most of us can recall the common variety button mushrooms that are sold in shops across the country. Students in Years 5 and 6 from Tin Can Bay State School recently discovered that there are many other varieties of mushrooms, such as the Oyster mushroom and Maitake mushrooms, with various uses such as cooking and medicine. In weeks 6 and 8, the classes travelled to Taigigan Road Produce, in Goomboorian, to see for themselves the environmental conditions required to grow mushrooms. The students participated in many activities, such as creating the growth medium for growing mushrooms, which consisted of soy bean husks, wood chips and water, as well as touring the facilities to discover the work that is involved with each growth stage. Students were amazed to see the growth patterns of mushrooms such as the Oyster mushrooms that grow very differently to common mushroom varieties.

Foreshore Clean Up By the students of 4/5

N WEDNESDAY, two classes - 3/4 and 4/5 - went on an excursion to the foreshore. On the way we were keeping our eyes peeled and we collected shells, leaves, feathers and gumnuts for art. When we got to our destination, we saw Ranger Juliet and she taught us all about different types of amazing plants and our environment. She showed us interesting photos of animals. Then we cleaned up Australia and collected all of the rubbish that could have gone into the ocean. We picked up lots of tiny lolly wrappers. Bentley picked up gum! Ali and Kirra found a shoe! Luckily, we were wearing gloves! We picked up about 3 kilograms of disgusting rubbish. After we cleaned up, we got to play on the playground and it was fun! We all started the long walk back to school but we were all extremely tired and the sun was deadly hot. When we got back to school, we were exhausted, but really pleased we had made the foreshore cleaner for our animals.

Dragons would love to have you on the boat!

HERE WAS A great turnout last month for the Queensland Dragon Boat Titles at Lake Kawana. While Cooloola Dragons did not enter a team this year, the Club was very much represented with nine volunteers. Friday afternoon, the nine Cooloola Dragons had their arms “full of gold, silver and bronze”, literally, as they helped prepare all the bling, e.g.medals, for the titles.

The same nine volunteers assisted in packing up after the event. Four of our hard working volunteers put in the whole two days! Hopefully next year we will once again field a team. Our training efforts are now focused on the Wide Bay Series, commencing May 29 at 1770. Our training program of Thursday afternoons and Sunday mornings has been interrupted recently with storms.

Our ‘Come and Try’ for the Thursday of International Women’s Week had to be cancelled because of the weather...maybe next year. Each Sunday the Cooloola Dragons invite anyone to come and try the sport. We would love to have you on the boat! Cooloola Dragons turn for the Wide Bay Series is the June 26/27 weekend when Tin Can Bay will be alive with Dragons from all over. Put the date in your diary, it’s a great weekend of Dragon Boat racing on beautiful Snapper Creek. The Dragons’ Lair Cafe is in full swing each Tin Can Bay market day.....the third Saturday each month in the RSL Hall. Come for a full hot breakfast or just coffee and homemade slices. ITH THE SCHOOL holidays upon us, the Greens staff are working hard to get the course in tip top condition for members and visiting golfers. Lack of our usual wet season rain has made life much more difficult for them. A plan for the future automatic watering system is well underway with the surveying of the course completed. Club championships are progressing and also matchplay is being undertaken by both men and ladies. The Junior Carnival is scheduled for April 11, and the Mens Open Day on April 17. There will be visiting clubs coming to both events. Visiting golfers with Golf Australia handicaps are always welcome. Bookings can be arranged by ringing the Pro Shop on 0409 727 477. James, our resident professional, or one of his staff, will help with bookings for either daily competitions or social golf. The Pro Shop is stocked with clothing, balls, towels, tees, etc. James also regrips clubs and can measure players for new clubs. Lessons are also able to be booked for learners as well as existing players.

I ALL. Can you believe we are already a quarter way through the year and Easter is on us already, school holidays upon us and temperatures dropping quickly - and how nice to see some decent rain finally. We have had some outstanding fishing in the last month, even though conditions have not been favourable and limited our trips. Large cod seem to be a regular and widespread catch along with Cobia and AJ’s. Closer reefs have been a go-to quite often, as the big moon phases have prevented us going wider with strong currents.

This however has been very productive with a great variety of quality fish ranging from Red Emperor, Snapper, Monster sweetlip, Pearl perch, Moses perch, Tuskies and plenty of quality Scarlets. Pelagics have been stretching the arms on the closer areas as well. We managed to jag a nice red only six mile from the bar as well. Reports of Great Whiting along

HE CLUB COMMITTEE recognised the need for providing assistance to persons who have recently moved into our local region and, during March, successfully held two training events. These events were free of charge to all participants and included a Seniors Fishing Training Day at Norman Point and a Boating Safety course that was held at our Clubhouse. On April 17, the club is hosting a Junior Fishing Training day at Norman Point. All events were fully booked within two weeks of media coverage.

The Club Executive Committee would like to extend our appreciation and thanks to the Queensland Department of Agriculture and Fisheries, Tin Can Bay Tourist Park, the TCB Mower and Marine Centre, The Tin Can Bay Chandlery and Lee Fishing Company. and dark, can be very productive fishing times for most species of fish, particularly if coinciding with a favourable tide for the species you may be targeting. The only downside is that it is the time that the mozzies and midges are most active as well. There have been some quality flathead caught recently on both hard body lures and soft plastics, so they could be worth targeting around high tide on the tops of the sand banks, or on the last of the run out tide on the drop-offs and the gutters that run off the sand banks.

Summer whiting have been a bit elusive lately but are still worth targeting on the sand banks, with a good flow of tide over them to stir up the sand and release the natural feed for them. The whiting can’t resist a well presented yabby or worm or even a few pea-sized black soldier crabs on a long-shanked hook. The Mangrove Jack have still been a bit less active this summer, with only the occasional one being caught, but there have been a few quality cod caught up the creeks while fishing for jacks. Strips of fresh mullet seem to be equally as good as live baits to get the results. The reef areas inside the bay have been a bit hit-andmiss with only a few cod and tusk fish being caught, but the sharks and large green toad fish are now taking turns at relieving anglers of their hooks and sinkers. Spanish mackerel could be a worthwhile target species this time of year around the Inskip and Bluff areas on trolled lures or drifting with floating baits of gar or pilchards out. With the Easter holiday period there will be an increase of boating traffic at the boat ramps and on the waterways, so a little more attention and patience may be required for an enjoyable outing to avoid any unfortunate incidents.

Competitors could fish the whole of the Great Sandy Strait, from the back end OU ALL KNOW our 2021 Catch and of the TCB Inlet, Mullens Creek, right up Release Mangrove Jack Competition, to Urangan Pier, over to Moon Point and and what a turn out we had. Hopefully, the Lions can con nue on from last season but get the job done this year. Close enough isn’t good enough in sport. No one ever remembers the first loser. Who was it that played the Storm in the grand final last year but lost? Not sure but it doesn’t ma�er anyway. Good to see Manly re-signing the coach a�er a thumping from the no cap Roosters. Well, at least one Queensland team is flying high. The Reds are si�ng top of the table at the moment. Hopefully, we do not have to play any NZ teams this year. Good luck. Chelsea says there’s loads of Easter Eggs at great prices!
