Like Little Lifesavers which is being held on 9 and 10 April - this looks like great fun for the kids and a good introduction to surf lifesaver skills. How good is being a kid in Rainbow Beach? I was desperate to do nippers and surf lifesaving as I grew up but we didn’t live near the coast, so devastating! Have you got your team together yet for the sandcastle competition? Last year’s event was a brilliant day full of sunshine and laughs, can’t wait for this one to see what creations people come up with. Absolutely amazing what can be made out of sand - although personally

made sure we had more points than the other teams”. In a highly controversial move, Team 1 lodged several unsuccessful challenges to the validity of the point scoring system given it generally rewarded skill, fitness, participation and performance. Team 1’s High Performance Manager, Media Liaison Officer, Complaints Registrar & Chef de Mission were unfortunately unavailable for further comment. Notwithstanding the above challenges (which may be real or perceived), the carnival committee warmly thanks the organisers, helpers, and competitors for a fantastic day of light hearted and spirited competition on the beach and look forward to doing it again next year!

N SATURDAY 19 March Rainbow Beach Surf Club held their annual Patrol Teams Invitational. The day saw our club’s eight patrol teams compete against each other for the prestigious honour of being crowned Champions. In a shock result, Team 5 secured victory after successfully lobbying to have Team 4 disqualified from the

Board Rescue event. Led courageously by Tas McClintock and Greg Nott, Team 5 walked the walk after well and truly talking the talk in a pre-competition press conference. Asked how they went about securing victory, Patrol Captain Tas McClintock said it was “simply a case of ensuring we had more points than the other teams”. Greg Nott confidently added “yeah we

A wonderful walk for International Women’s Day Maggie Travers

T

WENTY-EIGHT people registered for this year’s Twilight Walk along the Tin Can Bay foreshore for our International Women’s Day annual event. The hot and humid weather plus the excess of mosquitoes, midges, and other bities after all our rain, as well as commitments elsewhere, kept some of last year’s participants away. Once again, we were spoilt by the wonderful Tin Can Bay QCWA Ladies, who provided a most welcome feast of fresh fruit plus cold water and cuppas. Platters of cut pineapple, strawberries, oranges, watermelon were devoured by the noisy, cheerful walkers, thanks to the seven Country Women’s Association members. President Wendy was delighted with Left: Some of the attendees of the 2022 Twilight walk Photo by Jenni Jackson

the $130 raised that evening for the QCWA State Rural Crisis Fund, as we were mindful of our Gympie Region and beyond devastating flooding disaster. Not a bad effort considering people were unprepared for the donation fundraiser. Wendy had asked me if I had a “wet weather plan”? When I replied “No, no plan B!”, Wendy suggested that we may be able to use the RSL veranda, or maybe even inside the RSL Hall. Thanks to Wendy for contacting RSL President Don and his supportive agreement, we were happy to accept this change of plan for our celebration. While discussing the different starting stations of the Twilight Walk with Judy Kiddle, Heart Foundation Walk Organiser for the “Cooloola Cove Wheelie Walkers”, I decided upon a change for next year. Of course, we all are looking forward to the Cod Street to Norman Point Boardwalk being open. Why not ALL Twilight Walkers start at Norman Point? We can have different pick up stations, from which our wheelie walkers and short distance walkers can be collected and transported to the RSL Hall?

BreastScreen still in the Bay

R

EMINDER THAT THE BreastScreen Queensland mobile service is still in the area until 8 April 2022 so if you haven’t already made an appointment make sure you do so! Call 13 20 50 or book online at breastscreen.qld.gov.au to visit the van located at Lions Park Tin Can Bay. Breast cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed in women, with one in seven Queensland women diagnosed in their lifetime. A breast screen can detect cancer early, before a woman or her doctor can feel anything, and regular breast screening is the most effective way to reduce deaths from breast cancer.

Women aged 50-74 years are particularly encouraged to have a free breast screen every two years. Women aged 40-49 and those over 75 can also attend this free service. Women who are unable to attend the mobile van while it’s visiting Tin Can Bay, can book an appointment at the BreastScreen service located at Goldfields Plaza in Gympie. This service operates Mondays, Tuesdays and one Saturday each month. Make an appointment to visit the lovely staff at the BreastScreen Queensland mobile van while they are still in the area

Two popular holiday resorts in Rainbow Beach welcome new owners Jenni Jackson

A

FTER SEVENTEEN WONDERFUL years managed by the Gilmore family two iconic holiday resorts in Rainbow Beach have new owners. Katherine Leighton and Michael Yardley opted for a sea change and found idyllic Rainbow Beach to be the perfect spot. The pair relocated to the Nature Coast in January 2022. “We had been planning something like this for a few years prior” said Michael “When the opportunity presented itself whilst we were in lockdown we both agreed it was the perfect time to make the change”. Originally hailing from Breakfast Point, an inner west suburb of Sydney located on the Parramatta River, Michael and wife

Katherine have an extensive background in IT services, consulting, and solutions. Although this will be their first foray into the tourism market the couple have researched their new business completely. They bring with them not only a positive new energy but many years of understanding business and marketing. Just for an added challenge the couple purchased not one but two properties; first of all, the relaxing Rainbow Getaway Holiday Apartments that are located close to the main shopping precinct and only a short walk to a patrolled surf beach. The property offers a choice of one – three bedroom apartments which are fully self contained. “The Rainbow Getaway property is very family friendly” said Katherine “There are

many facilities available that are geared towards young families”. A few of those facilities include barbecues in garden settings, a beautiful salt water pool, and children’s play area just to name a few. The resort also offers one bedroom apartments to suit couples who prefer the convenience of being closer to town. The second property is the stunning Rainbow Ocean Palms Resort. “We are currently repositioning the marketing of this micro resort”said Michael,

The luxury Rainbow Ocean Palms Micro Resort

The beautiful saltwater pool area of the family friendly Rainbow Getaway Apartments

“We would like to take it to the next level and make this property a true resort experience”. A “true resort” experience would include total luxury, cabanas around the pool, and cocktails delivered directly to guests as they soak up the sun. These ideas and changes will take place over a period of time as Michael and Katherine find their feet. . Ocean Palms will also offer a fine dining restaurant on the premises. Although run separately and independently from Ocean Palms Resort the restaurant will be available to guests. Michael and Katherine are also currently working on some wonderful packages to make sure their guests have access to all the incredible experiences that Rainbow Beach has to offer. To keep up to date with all that is happening with these perfect holiday resorts subscribe to Rainbow Ocean Palms Resort and /or Rainbow Getaway Resort on the websites. Whatever your choice of family friendly or total luxury accommodation these beautiful properties will ensure you have a relaxing, comfortable stay. Both Katherine and Michael agree there is no better place to be this winter than Rainbow Beach. Don’t hibernate at home this winter - plan a stay in Rainbow Beach and enjoy a little of Katherine and Michael’s hospitality.

COMMUNITY PAGES

The Art of Life Drawing

Get Ready Queensland

Nancy Haire

Terry Steele – Chairman Cooloola Coast Community Local Disaster Management Support Group

What is “life drawing”? We are so fortunate to have so many people in our community who practise art and want to learn more. Cooloola Coast Art Group supports many aspects. Life Drawing is one activity that I especially appreciate. We have a convenient venue with good natural lighting. And we have an experienced model willing to pose for us fortnightly. Life drawing, also sometimes known as figure drawing or gesture drawing, is the drawing of the human form in various poses and levels of detail. The model may be clothed or nude. The drawing can range from highly detailed and anatomically proportional drawings to loose and expressive sketches, to gesture drawings which shows the simple form, action, and pose in a short amount of time. What are the benefits? • Improving observation skills to draw what you see. It becomes very relaxing, even meditative, as you become immersed in looking and drawing. • Letting go of expectations; we’re all learning. We learn from each other by seeing their approach. We laugh a lot and share techniques. • Exploring the opportunity to try out different media: charcoal, graphite, pens, ink, pastel

T WAS A CASE of smiles all round when Queensland Ambulance Service District Director, Tony Hucker presented Certificates of Appreciation and Service Medals to some of the long term members of the Local Ambulance Committee and the Benefits Sub-committee. Those honoured included Cherie Mason (20 years), Jenny Millers (10 years), Rod Jordan, Rosemaree Maker, Ken Millers, Lisa Lee, Carol Rixon, and Wendy Lowe (each 5 years). District Director Hucker expressed his thanks for all the work put in by the members and said that the LAC was highly valued by the QAS for its support of the local Ambulance Stations. To provide support to the community as

well, we have placed a further supply of Medical Information Booklets in places such as the doctors’ surgery and the pharmacies as well as the Rainbow Beach Library. The booklets can be used to record personal and medical information which is of assistance to our paramedics in case of an emergency. CAMPFIRES As the Easter break and school holidays are fast approaching, it is timely to warn parents of the dangers for young children around campfires. Children have been burnt through stepping on sand that has been used to extinguish a campfire. A fire put out with a bucket of water will retain little or no heat after a period of 10

minutes whereas using sand or dirt can mean that heat up to 100 degrees Celsius will remain for over eight hours. Burns should be cooled with cold running water and medical assistance sought immediately.

VER THE LAST couple of months it has been hard coordinating appeals and distribution of funds whilst being away. Mostly funds have been distributed via Visa cards through different businesses in the Murgon-Goomeri area to help with fencing, coordinated by Blaze-Aid. So far we have sent $6000 to cover food, fuel and materials with another $2000 on 20 March.

Last week I met 40 wonderful Rotarians at a dinner meeting in Bendigo where I was invited to speak about what the DroughtRunners had been doing over the last six years. Of course the talk and film clips mainly highlighted the floods around Gympie. As I was only 150 kilometres from Bendigo and the mention of a $10,000 donation for the Gympie region I was pleased to enlighten them on the Gympie disaster.

This month we have also helped the homeless in Gympie and the Tin Can Bay SES, Tin Can Bay Coastguard, and also a few smaller donations. Many thanks to Wayne Kerle who continues to work hard sorting 10c returns at Bay Auto in Tin Can Bay, Jim Snee for his money raising, Tin Can Bay Bakery for donations and all that have donated in some way. Just a reminder any flood donations can

also be left at Rainbow Beach Post Office where 100% of any donation gets to its destination free of administration costs. Also any 10c returns can be left at 10 Tingira Close in Rainbow Beach. Next month I will hopefully be able to mention many more donations promised to me from Victoria. I will see you all soon. Bank of QLD RB Droughtrunners BSB: 124001 Acct: 22599186

KAY, SO WE’RE still in need of clean, solid earth fill but now we’re looking for MEN too!!! Yes, that’s right – MEN. For a three month trial, the Tin Can Bay Community & Men’s Shed will be reserved for MEN ONLY on Tuesdays and Thursdays. This is in keeping with the Australian Men’s Shed Association’s charter of promoting Men’s Health and Well Being by providing an environment where MEN can socialise and work together harmoniously. This trial will run from April to June inclusive so now’s the time for MEN to show up and become involved if they are interested in this arrangement continuing. Women are still welcome and will continue to access and work in “The Shed” on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Our recent AGM saw the election of a new Committee of Management: Paul Boulton (President), Robert Storrie (Treasurer),

Raewyn Oliver (Secretary), Carole Lehmann, Keith Gall and Rob Norris. Come to our next Shed Shop Sale Day (coinciding with Tin Can Bay Markets) on Saturday, 16 April to meet the team, check out our “Shop” and see what we have to offer. Hope to see you soon. S I ENTER the Tin Can Bay RSL to attend its annual St Patrick’s Day event, President Don, resplendent in his spanking new Shamrock themed shirt, strides past on a mission. Don’s wife, Viv, hurries past in the opposite direction heading determinedly for the kitchen. “Hey, you two,” I sing out, “I need a photo.” They embrace lovingly as I take my shot, then resume their endeavors. Whatever they were doing, it worked, because it was a cracking night enjoyed by all. Don Holland joined the Australian Army

as an infantry soldier in 1977. In 2007 he retired after 30 years as a Warrant Officer Class 2, his last posting being range manager of the Wide Bay Training Area. Don served all over Australia in his time with the Army. He met Viv on a blind date whilst posted to Melbourne in 1998 and they married in 2006. Don has been Tin Can Bay RSL Sub-Branch President since 2020. It’s a real family affair with Viv ultra-busy as the Sub-Branch Events Coordinator and daughter Darah does a great job working behind the bar.

SAY NO!

Between them they volunteer on average 130 hours per month. However, it’s a labour of love. As Don said, “I really enjoy being involved with the RSL, supporting our veterans. 2020 was a trying time, however now the RSL Sub-Branch has moved on from that and is going from strength to strength.” Well Don, Viv, and Darah, we appreciate your efforts. Thank you for your service! The heart of Tin Can Bay RSL: President Don with wife and Events Coordinator Viv

to private development in our National Parks

Sign the Petition

The State Government is proceeding to issue private leases inside National Parks for development of private luxury accommodation. This is a massive change to what our National Parks are for, and to how they are run. It would be irreversible once begun. The Government decided on this massive change without any effective public consultation. Cooloola National Park is next in line for this private development plan: • 10 x 38mtr2 luxury units at Double Island Point! • Another 10 at Poona Lake! • How long then before it’s 20... and then 30? • How long before the public are excluded? • And how does the delicate ecology and aesthetic of Poona Lake cope with the development impacts?

Help us keep National Parks for nature and for everyone!

MORNING TEA in February was a chance for members and some visitors to catch up on each other’s news from over the holiday season, but the first formal meeting for the year was in March with a happy group enjoying being together again. The AGM followed a General Meeting and afternoon tea. The following members were elected to office: President Cherryl Mossman; Vice President: Daryl Christie; Secretary: Katrina van den Brenk; Treasurer: Barbara McKenzie; Tour Officer: Arthur Leggo; and Welfare Officers: Daryl and Ann Christie. The annual Changeover Luncheon takes place at the end of March, with a presentation of skits and other items to entertain attendees and the new team begins their duties on 1 April. The Annual Ecumenical Service and Blessing of the Club Presidents’ Collars, followed by a morning tea, will take place on 11 April after its earlier postponement from February. This is a chance for Probus members from the whole Wide Bay area to catch up and meet more members of other clubs from Bundaberg down to here. They also meet for a concert which is held later in the year. Meetings are held on each second Monday of the month at 2.00pm at the Sandcastle

Locals Unite for 2022 World Day of Prayer Service

Guest speaker Jacquie Cross gave a wonderful talk on her home country

With the weather improving the group all enjoyed the outlook and the company on the verandah at the Surf Club. As the roads continue to dry up we may be able to venture further afield for our next outing.

(Catholic), Pastor Dawn Peel, Pastor Garry Everson (both Arise), and Reverend Gary McClintock (Wesleyan Methodist). We are indebted to Rev Gary McClintock and his parishioners, Kevin, Jeanette, and Rob for the rousing, joyful live music and singing of the hymns. “For surely I know the plans” was especially composed for this Service. Guest Speaker was Mrs Jacqueline Cross, parishioner of St John Vianney Catholic congregation, who spoke about growing up in England and the history of the Staffordshire Potteries - the industrial area comprising of the six towns Burslem, Fenton, Hanley, Longton, Stoke, and Tunstall that make up the city of Stoke-on-Trent. Fascinating to learn about Josiah Wedgwood, his factories, Royal Doulton, and Jacquie’s family connections with The Potteries. If Jacquie and husband Dave had not emigrated to Australia, they would have been part of the Wedgwood workforce. An insightful talk, enhanced greatly by Jacquie’s exquisite display of old Wedgwood handpainted figurines, a very old mug, and other fine examples from Stoke-on-Trent. Jacquie strongly encouraged us to go to the United Kingdom, to get out of the cities and explore the real country, the villages, towns and landscapes. $435 was raised for the Bible Society Project in Northern Ireland. As per usual on the Cooloola Coast, we were spoilt with a variety of scrumptious sweet and savoury platters, brought by participants of each congregation. here was lots of chatter and ecumenical fellowship. Fr William closed the Service with a special prayer for the people of Ukraine.

Parrot

HERE IS NO DOUBT we are fortunate to live in such a beautiful area of Queensland, here in Rainbow Beach, but sometimes taking a closer look in the natural areas just outside our town can reveal just how amazing this whole location is. Not far from Cooloola Way, in the Cooloola Recreation Area of Great Sandy National Park, there’s a small population

of the vulnerable, shy, and elusive eastern ground parrot, one of only five grounddwelling parrots in the world. Living and feeding amongst the dense and sometimes swampy coastal heath, which is mainly low banksia bushes, bracken and grasses, ground parrots are usually not seen unless flushed out from cover. If you are lucky enough to see them, you’ll

The elusive eastern ground parrot, photographed in the Cooloola Recreation Area of Great Sandy National Park, not far from Cooloola Way Photos by Scott Humphris

recognise them by their bright grass-green plumage, with black and yellow markings and a prominent pale yellow wing bar. If unbothered by your observance, you may catch them feeding on the ground, eating seeds of sedges, grasses, herbaceous plants and shrubs. Silent in flight, the presence of ground parrots is often only revealed by its characteristic dusk and dawn call, a clear v v sequence of notes which rise in whistling v

pitch before fading. When it comes time to prepare for breeding, ground parrots construct a nest, which they conceal in low shrubs, made of a shallow bowl of fine sticks and grass, mostly lined with leaves, grass stalks, ferns, and small twigs. The female incubates the eggs, the clutch being 3 to 4 eggs, and broods the young whilst being fed by the male, who also feeds the young when they hatch. Foxes, dogs and cats, as well as land clearing, have decimated the population throughout Australia, so we are blessed to have a small group living here in our beautiful region, and we have a great responsibility to ensure they thrive well into the future.

HE TIN CAN BAY Mother’s Day Classic is back on the annual calendar so mark Sunday 8 May as the day to lace up your finest walking shoes, deck yourself out in pink and join the MDC movement in a walk/ run along the Tin Can Bay foreshore. The Mother’s Day Classic is an annual fundraiser for breast cancer research and is the largest single donor to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, with nearly $40 million donated since 1998. The NBCF has raised over $181 million to fund 557 world-class breast cancer research projects in Australia, all thanks to generous community fundraisers like the MDC. Since 1994, the 5-year breast cancer survival rate has increased from 76% to 91.5% - statistical proof that research is

making a difference. But there is still a long way to go before women stop losing their lives to breast cancer. Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in Australia with 1 in 7 women diagnosed in their lifetime. Incidence of breast cancer in men is also on the rise with 1 in 700 men diagnosed in their lifetime. We all know someone who has been affected in one way or another. To sign up for this worthy event jump onto the Mother’s Day Classic website and find Tin Can Bay under Local Events in Queensland. Register before 1 May to secure the standard entry fee and set up a fundraiser to help the event more or why not get a team together!

CACIA SOPHORAE, commonly known as coastal wattle, is found in coastal and subcoastal south-eastern Australia. A prostrate to medium shrub to 2-3 m. Along with Acacia fimbriata, the seeds can be eaten either green, roasted, steamed and ground. An evergreen shrub it flowers from February to May. The leaves are generally oval shaped phyllodes. An interesting aspect of acacias is their foliage. The majority have phyllodes, rather than leaves. Phyllodes are flattened stalks that have adapted to look and act like leaves. It is suitable for use as a hedge if pruned a little each year to maintain a bushy habit. It can be used In a coastal garden to attract butterflies, bees and birds and is salt tolerant.

Get Onstage With YAP Music @ the Markets in Tin Can Bay is a new initiative of Cooloola Coast Youth Activity Project to give kids a confidence development opportunity by performing onstage in a no pressure environment while contributing to community spirit. Do you know a young one who can play an instrument or sing? Maybe recite a poem or break out a dance routine? If your little one is a firecracker that belongs onstage, well here’s a creative outlet! No matter what they can do, YAP is keen to get youth in front of an audience to boost their selfesteem. Stage will be open from 9am to about 11am and performances don’t need to be long. Don’t be afraid to have a go so contact YAP with your performance idea for the Tin Can Bay markets. Email cooloolacoastyap@gmail.com or call Jess Milne on 0411 218 254. Not a kid but want to participate? YAP is also calling for any adult musicians to come along and belt out a few tune, or for those not ready to go live so they can join in by either rocking a shaker or having a dance. Or perhaps provide some backing music for a budding singer. There also needs to be an audience so have a browse around the markets then pop over to the stage area and take a moment to support this project.

The team were great to work with in helping to create an ad that suited our branding and the key message we wanted to convey. Their team turned around artwork really fast and gave us pricing options based on a variety of marketing plans. Must See and Dos

Patrolled Beach

Middle Rock

Swim in the flags in front of the Surf Lifesaving tower. Walk via the steps or walkway near the lookout and surf club, or drive onto Griffin Esplanade. 4WD beach access begins here.

When tides and conditions allow, the walk to Middle Rock and back is a beautiful way to check out the Coloured Sands. From here, vehicle permits are required and dogs are prohibited.

Coloured Sands Visit the patrolled beach, near the surf tower or the lookout to see the 70 plus colours in our cliffs. From town, walk south 1km along the beach - for best colours 4WD or tour a further 9km. Remember it is a gazetted road.

Inskip Point This peninsula is the gateway to Fraser Island, a favourite fishing spot and pet friendly camping grounds for generations. Only 15 minutes drive (2WD) from Rainbow Beach.

Carlo Sand Blow

Freshwater Picnic Area

Park at the top of Cooloola Drive, and walk 600m up from the car park or bushwalk about 2km from the National Parks Office for spectacular views of the Coloured Sands, Double Island Point, Tin Can Bay Inlet and hang gliders.

Walk to and swim in nearby Freshwater Lake, picnic or BBQ at the beautiful shady day-use area, found before Freshwater Road reaches Teewah Beach. 4WD only.

Poona Lake

Walk 4km from Crab Creek to Norman Point, over picturesque bridges, signage of flora and fauna, through mangroves, playgrounds and outdoor gyms. It is mostly flat and very safe for children on wheels. Look out for 137 species of birds.

Drive to Bymien Picnic Area (2WD) via 3km gravel on the Freshwater Road, (off Rainbow Beach Road). It’s a 40 minute walk to reach the cool waters of Lake Poona through beautiful rainforest and carrol (grey myrtle) scrub.

Searys Creek Only 7km from town towards Gympie, with 2 waterholes, boardwalks, bridges and history – do read the sign and spot the creatures. Always cool on the hottest of days.

Rainbow Beach Headland A look out, a viewing platform, 2 playgrounds, a skatepark, BBQs and picnic facilities. See the whales from here in season and watch the surfers out the front. Take a photo at the Cherry Venture propeller.

Double Island Point Access via the 4WD only Great Beach Drive or Freshwater Track. See dolphins, whales (seasonal), manta rays, turtles and walk up to our historic lighthouse. It has the longest break in Australia -when the swell lines up.

Mudlo Rocks

Wander here at low tide, play in rock pools and watch 4WDs navigate any exposed rocks. ALWAYS check conditions and ask locals before you 4WD - it is not always safe, even close to low tide.

Tin Can Bay Foreshore

Tin Can Bay Wildflower Walk Known for spectacular wildflower species, access this trail from the corner of Emperor St and Oyster Parade. Best in late winter and early spring.

Boat Ramps You can launch your boat at Norman Point and Crab Creek in Tin Can Bay or Carlo Point and Bullock Point near Rainbow Beach. All except Bullock Point offer toilet and scenic picnic facilities.

Feed Wild Dolphins at Norman Point Arrive from 7am, after feeding (fees apply), the dolphins leave for another day. A picturesque peninsula with public pool, playground, sailing, boat ramp and pontoon and picnic facilities.

Carlo Point For spectacular sunsets over the water, take a cheese platter or fish and chips and watch the day’s end. This favourite fishing spot is only 3 km from Rainbow Beach.

The Cooloola Cup and the Bay to Bay Sail into TCB Kay Muir

T

HE TIN CAN BAY Yacht Club will have a busy week at the end of April with the Cooloola Cup on 23 and 24 April, followed by the Bay to Bay regatta the following weekend, 30 April and 1 May. The Cooloola Cup is sponsored by Century 21, The TCB Chandlery, and Sails Bar and Bistro and it is hoped that it will attract even more boats than last year. The sought after prize for the Cooloola Cup for a monohull is not the first prize but the second which is barrel of port sponsored by John Moffatt, a local pharmacist. The Bay to Bay is a trailable yacht classic which started in 1980, missing out in 2020

thanks to Covid 19. The Hervey Bay Sailing Club run the race and Tin Can Bay hosts the start in the TCB inlet. The race start is a spectacular sight for the inlet with so many boats in different divisions plying for a position on the start line. Unfortunately, the weather has not been too favourable of late and a couple of Sunday race days have been postponed. The Wednesday afternoon cruises have also been affected however here’s hoping for better sailing weather soon. Anyone wishing to cruise in company is welcome on a Wednesday. Meet at the Yacht Club at 1pm ready to rig and go sailing.

Dragons support recent State Titles Pamela Gorey

Sandra Binnie and Michelle Jordan getting dirty doing the Marshalling job after all the wet weather

C

OOLOOLA DRAGON BOAT Club had volunteers travel to Kawana, Sunshine Coast for the Queensland Dragon Boat Club (DBQ) State Titles on the weekend of 11 and 12 March. DBQ relies on the assistance of volunteers in many different roles such as: Race Secretary, Timekeeping, Marshalling, Boat Handling etc.

Kerri Southern, Sandra Wooster, and Toni Archer doing the most important job: keeping time of each race.

Clubs from Cairns to the New South Wales border travel to the event which is very competitive. The overall winners for the two days were: Sunshine Coast DBC, with our own Shane Berkhout competing with them. They also took out the Gayle Barnett Award for fastest 500m Mixed Team. Our Wide Bay teams included 1770 who came

away with a Silver and Bronze medal. And the team from Hervey Bay paddled extremely well over the weekend. Hopefully Cooloola Dragon Boat Club will be back competing at the State Titles in 2023, but for now are in training for the Wide Bay Series that commences in Bundaberg on 7 May.

I

’M BEING OPTIMISTIC in saying this – I think that the weather is clearing up. It’s been pretty wet in recent times, and I do believe that we have experienced some of the most challenging fishing conditions in recent memory. Even some of our most dedicated club members have had trouble wetting a line lately. I’m writing this in mid-March and from February until now there were some days

in early February where the wind dropped and the rain stayed away, but those were few and far between and March started in a similar vein. Regardless of this some intrepid members have ventured out in the bay, and we have even been able to hold one land-based event at Norman Point without getting too wet. Fishing the bay has resulted in some excellent catches of mud crab, mangrove jack, nannygai, trevally, cod, tuskfish and flathead. There were very few squid or

Woodn’t you know:

The timber detective fighting global deforestation and Trade in Endangered Wood Species Philip D. Evans

I

MOVED TO Rainbow Beach a few weeks ago. I was drawn here like many of you by Rainbow’s stunning natural beauty. Living on the Cooloola Coast it’s sometimes hard to imagine that a much darker reality exists in many other parts of the world, where there is wholescale destruction of forests and loss of biodiversity. Such destruction is fueled in part by the trade in illegally logged timber, which is valued at a staggering 152 billion US$ per year; surpassed in value only by narcotics and counterfeit goods. Many countries have laws to prevent trade in timber that is logged from prohibited areas or involves wood species listed by the Convention on International Trades in Endangered Species (CITES, Appendix 1).

Some of these laws are Canadian Wild Animal and Plant Protection and Regulation of International and Interprovincial Trade Act; US Lacey Act; EU Timber Regulation; and Australian Illegal Logging Prohibition Act). But the laws are (or have been) effectively inoperable because law enforcement has the hopeless task of seizing timber prohibited from trade and prosecuting criminals without the means to identify the wood species to a level of certainty required by a court of law. In other words, how does law enforcement know that they have a timber that is prohibited from trade and not a look-a-like species? That’s the problem and to paraphrase Abraham Lincoln “Law without enforcement is just well intentioned advice”.

During my career I’ve acquired the much neglected forensic skill of being able to scientifically identify timbers. It’s a useful skill and I’ve been called upon in the past to identify wood for federal police, antique dealers, Bureau of Air Safety Investigation, National Museum, War Memorial and even the Prime Ministers Department (identification of the wood used to make Ben Chifley’s pipe holder, an icon of the Labour party)! The approach I used in these cases was to examine the wood using a microscope or hand lens, and look for subtle differences, and identifying features, in the microscopic structure of wood. But this approach can’t identify wood to the level of precision needed to separate the woods that are prohibited from trade by CITES, particularly tropical timbers like the rosewoods which consist of several species that look identical even under the microscope. Rosewoods are rich red colored timbers and are in great demand for musical instruments, furniture and carvings: they are the world’s most commonly trafficked timber. New far more sensitive forensic methods were needed to identify such woods, and thankfully they have emerged as a result of work I’ve been involved in at US Wildlife Crime Lab in Ashland, Oregon (the world’s only forensic laboratory dedicated to fighting wildlife crime), and the Canadian Environment and Climate Change Laboratory in Vancouver. As a result, we now have the technology to identify timber with a degree of certainty that we could only dream of a few years ago. The technology is currently being deployed by US and Canadian Law enforcement agencies, and they are convicting criminals involved in illegal trade in prohibited timber species.

terms than an explosive or even oil. Therefore, chemical techniques for wood identification are paired with new sophisticated artificial intelligence programs to sift through massive datasets to look for subtle chemical differences between woods. The AI programs gradually get better at identifying the timbers of interest and eventually they are able to separate seemingly identical wood species with a high degree of precision. Recently, we have had great success in identifying different rosewood species. The key to all of the new approaches to identifying timber is to have reference samples of woods whose identity is known in order to compare its authentic chemical fingerprint with that of the species under investigation. These reference samples are blocks of wood generally collected in the 19th and early 20th century which reside in musky So what are these new wood libraries called xylaria. techniques? SCHOOL NEWS

Rainbow Beach School year off to an eventful start

HAT AN INTERESTING and eventful start to the school year in 2022 it has been! The delayed return of school, quickly followed by the record high floods recorded along the Eastern Seaboard have certainly had a major impact on our regional communities. While we have been very fortunate here in Rainbow Beach to have come through this period with very little negative impact, some of our friends and colleagues, schools, businesses, and clubs in neighbouring communities have had major challenges to face. It is in times such as these that I am reminded of the resilience and strength often displayed and required to overcome adversity. As staff we have been focused on providing students the opportunity to engage with all the critical content planned for Term 1 so that we can start Term 2 fresh. I want to acknowledge the commitment and hard work of all of our team over the Term. I am always amazed how our staff are able to create dynamic learning environments and engaging learning opportunities while being able to nurture children’s wellbeing.

Rainbow Beach’s inaugural Kindy class!

Beau Maeve

We are very excited to have commenced our Kindy program this Term! In Week 7 we were able to welcome our brand new Kindy families into the school having graduated from KindyLinQ. It has been awesome to see our Prep ladies engage with and support our Kindy crew with their learning opportunities. The way in which the children have felt comfortable in the transition is testament to the success of the KindyLinQ program. We have been blown away by the confidence, independence, and personalities already on display. We would like to wish Mrs Lynne Chamberlain all the very best in her retirement. We were able to acknowledge her extensive career and the positive

influence she has made on many children across Queensland. On behalf of the wider Rainbow Beach School community we would like to thank her for her care, commitment, and contribution to our children in supporting them to be the best they can be! We have some exciting things planned in the near future including our School Leaders attending the Young Leaders Day in Brisbane, the Easter Bonnet Parade on the last Friday of Term 1, School Cross Country, and ANZAC Day early Term 2. It will be an action-packed start to the term once again. Wishing everyone a happy and Safe Easter Break and look forward to seeing you back next Term!

ESPITE THE WET weather recently, we have had a great month at the Rainbow Beach Learning Community. Our numbers have continued to grow and it is lovely to see how the young people are forming friendships as they enjoy the various activities offered. We have some budding chefs in our midst who have made us some delicious lunches including fried rice, protein balls, mini quiches, banana bread, brownies, sausage rolls, muffins and pikelets. Some of the boys have been learning how to sew, making an “ouchy pouch’’ and a named bag and the majority of them are very good, which will hopefully come in handy some time in the future. Mo Riggs is continuing to lead the art class in creating amazing artistic pieces. And we have shared some great afternoons on the beach with Sarah and Dean of Rainbow Beach Learn to Surf, exploring around the sand blow and jumping the waves. We have had the pleasure of receiving visits from several locals who have shared about their passion. James from Wolf Rock Dive enthralled his listeners with information about grey nurse sharks, giving everyone a shark tooth as a memento. Tristan & Carolyn from Sik Ladz Clothing Co shared the incredible story of how

Tristan, then aged 13, survived a head-on collision with a 4-wheel drive while riding his bike. Trist is a true miracle in how he has recovered to date, working hard on his business and is determined to “Make His Dayz Count”. His clothing line is all about the things that “Sik ladz” do and all the things he wants to do with his mates. It goes to show that with the right determination, love and support, there is always hope and you can achieve anything you set your mind to. Why don’t you support this young entrepreneur by purchasing some of his merchandise which you can check out at www.sikladz.com.au There is exciting news with regards to the Community Pantry at the Church of the Good Shepherd in Carlo Road. We have become members of Foodbank in Brisbane, which gives us access to fresh fruit and veggies, bread, milk and a huge variety of pantry items on a weekly basis and are in the process of finalising transport from Morningside/Rocklea Markets to Rainbow Beach. Kerry and Michael Cody have been opening the pantry on Tuesday afternoons between 1 & 3pm and two new volunteers – Sue Donaldson and Diane Bowman will be opening the pantry on Thursday afternoons.

Tristan and Carolyn from Sik Ladz Clothing Co kindly stopped by to chat to the kids Photo by Jess McKenzie

Thank you so much ladies for putting up your hand to help. Our supplies may be a little low until we get regular deliveries from Foodbank, so any donations of general food items would be greatly appreciated. The Learning Community has been given the opportunity to facilitate a Parent/Child Cooking Class, ably led by Elements personal chef Aime Brown at the Rainbow Beach Community Centre on Tuesday 5 April. This is in the first week of the school holidays and there will be two sessions to choose from – 10.30am-12pm and 1pm-3.30pm. Spaces are limited to 20 per session and bookings are essential by Thursday 31 March. Aime will be sharing her extensive knowledge stemming from over 25 years of professional culinary experience by demonstrating how to create poke bowls, which are a fun way of encouraging children to eat healthy, colourful food. She will also sneak some maths, reading and science skills into the lesson as well! The cost of $15 per person includes all the components to make your own poke bowls, recipes, and an information pack. So come along with your child and help them learn about the joys of creating delicious food in a fun and relaxed environment.

Tristan with young Tigerlily

At the end of the session, we will sit down together to enjoy what we have prepared. Aime has recently launched her business Elements and will come to your home to cook for those special occasions. She also makes cakes for all occasions and can be contacted on 0428 667 999. A reminder that the 2022 Sandcastle Competition is happening again on Wednesday 13 April, on the beach near the SLS tower with registration from 8.30am. The competition starts at 9am with judging by Sandshapers of Noosa at 11am and prize-giving at 11.30am. Last year’s competition saw hundreds of locals and visitors on the beach creating amazing sand sculptures and winning great prizes donated by local businesses. Cooloola Coast Realty and Rainbow Beach Realty have kindly sponsored Sandshapers of Noosa who will be back creating an amazing sand sculpture to inspire us – hopefully a fire-breathing dragon! Make sure that you save the date and start getting a team together to plan and build your sand creation. Rainbow Beach

Well what a month March turned out to be. Enough rain to last the east coast of Australia a life me I reckon. Our thoughts go to the people losing houses, belongings, and memories washing down the river. Would never be a nice feeling seeing your house float away. Unimaginable. But as always it is incredible to see the local communi es come together and help each other out and get things back to normal as soon as possible. Always great to see the Aussie spirit in ac on. Dare I say that everyone's favourite virus appears to be loosening its grip on us all…? Although it is school holidays coming up so I'm sure there will be a coincidental spike in numbers or a mysterious new variant popping up just in me yet again. Watch this space. On to the all-important sports report…

As Anzac Day has been either missed or heavily restricted these past couple of years it is extra important for us to get out this year and honour those who gave their life for us and our beau ful country. I believe we should show our respect and get heavily involved in this day. Lest we forget. Here's hoping for a busy trading period for all throughout this month, especially with restric ons easing and borders well and truly open. At me of wri ng anyway…but as we know it can unfortunately all change in an instant. Which is why it is so important for locals to support locals. Thank you, all. Onwards and upwards.

Matt, Bernie, Justin, Liam & our friendly staff at the IGA

Well, of course the biggest news in sport at the me of wri ng is the shock re rement of Aussie legend Ash Barty. Was not expec ng that, that is for sure. But she is going out on top as the World No.1 and having recently won the Australian Open. Imagine accomplishing all that and s ll only being 25 years old. Enjoy post-tennis life Ash, we will miss you on centre court! The good news is that it is finally footy season. As far as Queensland goes, the Broncos have go en off to a good start having won their first two games. Cowboys and Titans have each picked up early wins too. AFL has also kicked off, with the Lions and the Suns each winning their first round. Here's hoping the Lions can get the job done this year. Feels like such a long me since we've had any footy on the screens, glad to get those Friday nights back yelling at the TV. Formula 1 season is off and racing as well if that is what you are into, although Riccardo hasn't done too well so far - finishing 14th out of 20 in the Bahrain GP. Bit embarrassing. As April comes along, it brings school holidays, Easter, and Anzac Day. Some great long weekends coming up to make the most of what Rainbow has to offer.
