AUGUST is the month to step off the local streets and into the bushland to enjoy a proliferation of colourful wildflowers. You may be assisted with finding walking tracks and plant identification with the booklet Cooloola Wildflowers and Walks.

A second edition is going into print this month, with some additional flowering plants and descriptions. The booklet will continue to sell for $5, available from Rainbow Beach Post Office, Rainbow Beach Community Hall, and QPWS.

The Wildflowering at Cooloola program will be held on the weekend of 26-27 August.

On Saturday participants will meet in Rainbow Beach and be led on a variety of walks. On Sunday, the focus is on native gardens in Cooloola Cove, with time to learn from and draw/paint/create with artists Joolie Gibbs and Susan Davis.

Veterans Day 2023 Service

RAINBOW BEACH RSL Sub-Branch will commemorate Veterans Day on 18 August 2023 by conducting a Service to honour and remember the sacrifices and service of all those Australians who served their Country during Peace, Peacekeeping Missions, and War.

The service will be held at the Rainbow Beach Cenotaph commencing at 11am. All members of the Community are cordially invited to attend and pay their respects.

2023 will mark the 50th Anniversary of the end of Australia’s involvement in the Vietnam War.

LOCAL EVENT PRODUCER and Project Manager Elisa Seul from Elisa: People, Places & Events is set to deliver an exciting event that will showcase the talents of Rainbow Beach and surrounding area.

Tunes & Tales, a unique gathering of creatives and art enthusiasts, aims to celebrate the power of arts and cultural expressions while fostering a strong sense of community networking.

Presented by the Creative Arts Gympie Region, through Australian Government funding as part of the Creative Gympie Event Series, this event promises to be an enriching experience for all. The collaboration between local artists, performers, and event professionals demonstrates the immense talent and passion within the region’s creative community.

Thanks to the generous support from the CIRS Association, the event

will take place at the Rainbow Beach Community Hall. This venue provides the perfect backdrop for an evening filled with captivating performances and engaging activities.

‘The program for the event consists of two distinct parts,’ Ms Seul said.

‘The first segment features a panel workshop tailored specifically for creatives. It aims to equip attendees with valuable insights on boosting the creatives industry, networking effectively, and establishing a strong presence in our region.

‘This workshop will be an excellent opportunity to learn from industry experts and exchange ideas with likeminded individuals.’

The second part showcases the rich local talent through live performances, open to all. Attendees will have the pleasure of witnessing mesmerising music, thought-provoking poetry, and captivating photography. The

Trivia For Charity Night a Big Success

THE INAUGURAL Trivia for Charity event was held at the Rainbow Beach Community Centre Hall on Saturday 15 July 2023.

The event was an initiative of the Rainbow Beach book clubs; and this first one was hosted by one of the clubs, ‘Reading Between the Wines’.

The charity of choice this time was The Pyjama Foundation, who are devoted to improving the lives of kids in care.

One of the book club members, Deb Taylor, is actively involved in the foundation as a Pyjama Angel and gives her time weekly to a child in foster care by reading, playing games, and helping with homework. The difference this oneto-one interaction makes to a vulnerable child is immeasurable.

The Community Hall proved to be a perfect venue for the event, with the newly installed cinema screen used to display questions and graphics to make the whole experience so much more enjoyable.

The kitchen was put to good use as well with local couple Sean and Andrea Francis cooking up a delicious supper of minestrone soup and crusty bread, followed by yummy baked vegetable frittata.

A perpetual trophy has been designed by Cooloola Trophies and Engraving to display the winners of each event, which should encourage fierce competition between teams.

Andrew Hawkins from Rainbow Beach Realty was the MC for the event, and he used his experience and expertise as a well-known and respected local identity to ensure that everything flowed smoothly.

Local businesses were invited to help with donations of goods and/or services that could be raffled and the generosity demonstrated by

everyone approached was truly inspirational as demonstrated by this list of donors:

OUR MARKET community just keeps growing, getting better every month.

A lot of preparation goes into each market - contacting stallholders, planning the layout, confirming stallholder insurances, promoting on media, organising the volunteer roster, line-marking and numbering the sites, setting up and packing away inside tables, erecting the music marquee, ordering barbecue items, early morning site marshalling, site fee collection and

general administration. Then there’s the cleaning up afterwards.

We have 23 market volunteers but we’re not all available every month. So we always welcome newcomers to the volunteer pool.

Future of Waste

STAFF FROM Gympie Regional Council Waste and Environment teams presented the results of their survey on our current waste management services and future needs to a group of residents in the hall on 27 June.

It was recognised that Rainbow Beach has its own waste management issues that were not raised in the Gympie region survey, however Council staff took onboard the local perspectives. Discussions focused on recycling problems and solutions for units, owneroccupiers paying for extra collections from short term accommodation properties, community education programs for a transient population, bulk (kerbside) waste collections, and the support for attracting innovative

Planning Consultation on Centre Block future

Council Planning staff addressed concerns raised by CIRS members and other concerned Rainbow Beach locals about the reclassification of Lot 1, 32 Rainbow Beach Road (otherwise known as the Centre Block).

The Centre Block consists of three parcels of land owned by Council. The Community Centre is built on Lot 3, the markets are held on Lot 2, and the open space on the corner of Clarkson Drive is Lot 1 which was re-zoned in 2016 from Community Purposes to Town Centre (commercial).

While no reason was given for why the change had taken place some years ago, concerned residents were told that if enough people wrote to Council requesting the change back, it could be reversed. A show of hands at the meeting on 26 June showed the majority want it reversed.

Arts & Cultural Plan

ASMALL BUT vocal group of local creatives met with Council’s Arts and Cultural Development staff in July to provide feedback on their draft Arts and Cultural Plan for the Gympie region. Film Night

CIRS WAS THE first local community group to host one of our CoolaFlix free film nights.

The film was Mavka: The Forest Song, a 2023 fulllength, animated feature film based on a Ukrainian folktale about a forest spirit who falls in love with a human.

Free entry made it an affordable night out for the family, with reasonable prices for hot dogs, ice creams, drinks and - of course, what all movies must have - popcorn!

All proceeds went to CIRS to help us maintain the hall and keep offering these affordable social opportunities.

Raw Ordio gave locals something to dance about - a free afternoon of chill beats pumping out across the Centre block on Sunday 15 July. This was the second time that CIRS has provided Rainbow locals with

a magic afternoon of Raw Ordio’s mellow music. The response was so good last year that we brought them back.

Homeward Bound

NEXT UP IN AUGUST, the host group will be Rainbow Beach Community Pantry (a ministry of Pindari Life Ltd). The pantry provides affordable hampers on a fortnightly basis from the Community Centre hall.

The film will be the much-loved Disney Classic - Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey (rated G for General Exhibition). Doors open at 5pm, so you can stock up on food and drinks before the film screens at 6pm. All proceeds go to the Community Pantry.

Don’t forget! CoolaFlix is on the second Saturday of each month, after the Markets. FREE entry for all ages. Our CoolaFlix program is funded by the Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal (FRRR) and powered by volunteers!

IF YOU NOTICED a new trend of green and blue hair being sported around town over the holidays, you may have wondered why? Let’s just say the Rainbow Beach School Colour Explosion was a huge success!

Bursts of coloured powder filled the air on the last day of term as the students made their way through a fun and challenging obstacle course and crawled through slime pits –all the while having colour powder thrown at them.

But the fun wasn’t just for students; you guessed it, the teachers and parents couldn’t resist and joined the fun!

Whilst there was a lot of work put into the event by the P&C, it couldn’t have been done without the support of school staff, our families, and the community.

Thank you to all of the helpers who cooked, cleaned, set up, and packed down: it would not have been possible with you. A great big thank you also goes out to all our families, friends and community who donated financially to our cause, we raised over $9000!!! A fantastic job and one which we are ever so grateful for!

Over the past 12 months we have been working toward opening an Out of School

Hours Care (OSHC) service in Rainbow Beach. We have received wonderful support from our school, parents, and the community and we are almost there!

Our next step is to put our feelers out there for any childcare workers who would be interested in employment at the OSHC service once operational. Below is a brief description of the positions that will be available.

Help TCB RSL commemorate Vietnam Veterans’ Day

PLANNING IS WELL underway for the Vietnam Veterans’ Day commemorations in Tin Can Bay to be held on 18 August. We commemorate Vietnam Veterans’ Day on the anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan in 1966.

We remember the sacrifices of those who died and say thank you to almost 60,000 Australians who served during the 10 years of our involvement in the Vietnam War.

Vietnam Veterans’ Day will commence with a service at 11am at Anzac Memorial Park, Tin Can Bay. Everyone is then welcome to adjourn to the Tin Can Bay RSL sub-branch for refreshments after the service.

I was doing some research on Vietnam Veterans’ Day last week when a post popped up on my Facebook feed. It described the service of Roy ‘Zeke’ Mundine OAM, a proud Bundjalung man who served in the Australian Army for 36 years. His service included a posting to Malaya in 1959 and two tours of South Vietnam in 1966 and 1969.

Roy was Mentioned in Dispatches for his actions in Vietnam on 25 April 1969 as Section Commander of 1 Platoon, A Company.

While investigating an enemy bunker Corporal Mundine tripped a mine, which blew his right leg off. He continued instructing his diggers for over 40 minutes while wounded and refused treatment until the Sappers cleared the minefield.

I served with Zeke Mundine in the 49th Battalion for my 9 years with the Bushman’s Rifles. He was a Warrant Officer in charge of the Battalion Q store. I recall him as a great soldier and a good bloke with a limp who always had kind words of advice, especially for the new young soldiers who had

recently joined the Battalion. Roy retired from the Army in 1995. On 18 April 2016, Uncle Roy was appointed the Australian Army’s first indigenous Australian Elder. I’m proud to have known Zeke and can only say – Thank you for your Service!

OVER THE PAST months we have continued to support the Gympie Homeless, so that those with no fixed address can enjoy a late afternoon cooked meal. Another $1,000 has been donated there.

We have also put another $1,000 into Eugowra down near Forbes in NSW as they have a long recovery ahead from last November’s floods.

A big thank you to the Big 4 at Carlo Point for allowing us to collect the bottles and cans as well as Wolf Rock Dive, the Watts Family, and all who donate to our bins at 10 Tingira Close.

Then we have the Tin Can Bay Holiday Park, Tin Can Bay Yacht Club, and all in Tin Can Bay that donate to Wayne Kerle’s pick ups. Many thanks also to all that donate to our collection tins in Rainbow Beach, Tin Can Bay, and Gympie – they really help to keep us going.

We know the economy is tough with many feeling the pinch so let’s hope

for no more disasters in the near future.

It was amazing to get a thank you call from Kevin Butler, the founder of Blaze Aid, after our past donations to them of $20,000 which helped in their efforts with fencing after the 2020 Fires in northeast Victoria and with flood repairs in the GoomeriMurgon areas.

Flower Show for vital funds

THE COOLOOLA COAST Local Ambulance Committee (LAC) recently purchased a Mangar Camel Lifting Chair for use by our paramedics to assist in sitting up and lifting a fallen patient.

The chair is portable and inflatable and offers a fully supportive lift that is comfortable for the patient.

Last year we purchased two Raizer Chairs which can also be used to assist the paramedics in dealing with a patient who has fallen. These chairs enable the paramedics to raise a patient from the floor with minimal impact on both parties.

The LAC is very pleased with the positive feedback from the ambulance officers as to the benefits this equipment has provided in carrying out their duties.

The annual Flower Show, as well as our weekly bingo sessions, provide the funds which the committee needs to be able to support the paramedics with aids such as the chairs.

The Flower Show this year will be held on Saturday 30 September. The show as usual will be in the Tin Can Bay Community Centre and will open at 9am.

Entries for the plant and flower sections can be delivered to the Centre on Friday 29 September between the hours of 2pm and 5pm. Entries for the photography section should be left at the Fruit and Veg Shop in Tin Can Bay or the Rainbow Beach Library by Monday 25 September.

Entry forms will be available at both libraries and also selected retail outlets.

Quilters celebrate birthdays in quirky style

ON THE SECOND Tuesday of every month we celebrate members’ birthdays and our President Robyn Salmon made this quirky table runner for the occasion which was received with positive comments from members.

The soft pink quilt has been made by Teena Guy and has beautiful hand embroidered blocks. The design is called Isobella and has been made by several of our members.

Teena quilted this herself on a domestic sewing machine. The finished quilt is beautiful and something Teena can be proud of.

Tin Can Bay Quilters meet every Tuesday at 9am at the Community Hall, Amity Place, Tin Can Bay. On the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays we finish at 2pm to allow time for completing special projects and the other Tuesdays we finish at 12 noon.

TIN CAN BAY Community & Mens Shed (TCBCAMS) is looking for teachers for the leadlighting and wood lathe classes we have planned for the near future. Shed Manager Bryan Phillips would love to hear from you on 0420 299 651 if you can assist.

TCBCAMS has received an enormous donation from Shamrock Civil Constructions with Luke and his team donating their manpower, machinery, and materials to create a solid access road with associated stormwater drainage to our premises in Amity Place. WELCOME TO six new members of our Heart Foundation Walking groups: Mary, Nina and Graeme, Trish, Bob and Geoff.

Thanks to Val McAlister for alerting me to National Pyjama Day to help The Pyjama Foundation raise much-needed awareness and funds offering learning skills for more than 1,000 children in foster care, funding educational resources, and helping provide stable, positive relationships.

Cooloola Cove Wheelie Walkers were in the spirit, raising $50 with more promised. It was our first day wearing our new red Heart Foundation Walking hoodies.

We missed the Little Haven Palliative Care’s Gratitude Walk and Fun Run in Gympie. Maybe next year we can enter a team or two.

Congratulations Col on achieving your first 50 walks, and to Tina Martin who receives her second badge to pin on herself: 200 Walks, plus Award Certificate and a $20 voucher for the online Heart Foundation shop. A great birthday present!

Fourteen of us gathered and had fun at the Cooloola Medical Transport ‘Christmas In July’ fundraiser lunch on Wednesday 19 July at the Cooloola Coast Bowls Club.

July dance a huge success!

WOW WHAT A NIGHT – the dance held on Saturday 15 July was a rousing success with 61 patrons enjoying life with dance and great music.

And…drumroll please…dancing in Country Halls is here to STAY. Yes you heard right –Cooloola Coast Dances Group was asked to keep the dances coming, so every month till December and then from April to December 2024 (with no dance in May 2024 for a family break) the Country Hall dances will be ON.

The band is booked, the Hall is secured, and dance patrons wanting to come and dance and have fun in a great social atmosphere need to mark their calendars.

Every 3rd Saturday of the month at Goomboorian Memorial Hall from 7.30 till 11.30pm. Come and trip the light fantastic with dance and great music and of course a Great Country Style supper superbly catered by the lovely ladies from the Goomboorian Hall Committee.

OUR FIRST Mosaic Workshop was hugely successful as you can see from all of our smiling faces. On the first day participants created lovely individual Bee Baths in colourful mosaics. Our bees will love them! Day 2 will be on grouting and sealing.

History of Rainbow Beach

RAINBOW BEACH was gazetted as a Township in 1969, but before that there were many visitors exploring the area well before a track was dozed in to get here via road.

Many visitors came from Tin Can Bay by boat to Carlo Point and Inskip and fought their way through swamp and sandflies to fish from our beach and explore the area, then row back to Tin Can Bay with their catch.

Then came sand mining, and of course a track, then a road. Now it has been decided to publish a book about the town using contributed stories and photos provided by early residents that have seen the town develop through the decades from these early times.

Age is catching up with us all, and the time has come for stories to be jotted down and shared before the early yarns are lost forever. A few old pub stories would be great, or your business stories or just your general memories of your life in Rainbow Beach.

There are many legends that have been created in this small town, some still living to tell the tale, others have passed but their stories can live on in this book.

A lot of material has already come to hand but it would be appreciated

if we can get even more people’s stories. There are many in Tin Can Bay who worked in the sand mining industry – I would love to hear from you too.

You may have received a letter in your mailbox already about this project, but if you haven’t please don’t think that you aren’t included; there are so many people that have lived here over the years for extended amounts of time that it’s impossible to remember them all or find them.

If you lived here prior to 2000, when most of the development and changes happened, it would be appreciated if you could write down (or type) these memories/stories to share – even one page would be great. Photos of course would be amazing if you’d like them included.

Also, if you know any of these past residents who may not be on Facebook who you think should tell their story, they could be neighbours, relatives, old family friends, please let them know of the project and invite them to share as well.

Handwritten notes are fine, as someone will type them up for the book.

OUR BRANCH Annual General Meeting was held at 18 Whiting Street, Tin Can Bay on 18 July.

The AGM was well attended and we welcomed our visitors, Pam Bauer (Returning Officer), Janice Jamieson (President, QCWA Gympie - South Burnett Division), Mr and Mrs Peter Murphy (Auditor), Cr Jess Milne (Guest Speaker, GRC), Mr Hilary Smerdon, (Deputy Mayor, Gympie Regional Council) and Joan Barnier (Division, International Officer). Also present were representatives from other Branches within our Division of Gympie-South Burnett.

Pam Bauer announced the members of the Executive Committee for 2023–2024 and our Division President, Janice Jamieson, graciously pinned on them their Badge of Office.

Wholesome Outback Stew

Serves: 10

Prep time: 15 minutes + 2-3 hours

soak time

Cook time: 2-3 hours

3 serve per portion

Ingredients

½ cup dried split peas

½ cup pearl barley

½ cup dried soup mix

1-1 ½ kg lean beef or lamb, diced

1 large sweet potato, cubed

500g pumpkin, cubed

4 medium potatoes, cubed

2 large onions, chopped

400g can four bean mix

400g can crushed tomatoes

3 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce

3 teaspoons Moroccan spice mix

Method

SOAK split peas, barley and soup mix in water 2-3 hours before cooking. PREHEAT oven to 150°C. ADD all ingredients into a large casserole dish with a lid. COOK in oven for 2-3 hours until tender.

20 Must See and Dos

Patrolled Beach

Swim in the flags in front of the Surf Lifesaving tower. Walk via the steps or walkway near the lookout and surf club, or drive onto Griffin Esplanade. 4WD beach access begins here.

Coloured Sands

Visit the patrolled beach, near the surf tower or the lookout to see the 70 plus colours in our cliffs. From town, walk south 1km along the beach - for best colours 4WD or tour a further 9km. Remember it is a gazetted road.

Carlo Sand Blow

Park at the top of Cooloola Drive, and walk 600m up from the car park or bushwalk about 2km from the National Parks Office for spectacular views of the Coloured Sands, Double Island Point, Tin Can Bay Inlet and hang gliders.

Poona Lake

Drive to Bymien Picnic Area (2WD) via 3km gravel on the Freshwater Road, (off Rainbow Beach Road). It’s a 40 minute walk to reach the cool waters of Lake Poona through beautiful rainforest and carrol (grey myrtle) scrub.

Searys Creek

Only 7km from town towards Gympie, with 2 waterholes, boardwalks, bridges and history – do read the sign and spot the creatures. Always cool on the hottest of days.

Rainbow Beach Headland

A look out, a viewing platform, 2 playgrounds, a skatepark, BBQs and picnic facilities. See the whales from here in season and watch the surfers out the front. Take a photo at the Cherry Venture propeller.

Double Island Point

Access via the 4WD only Great Beach Drive or Freshwater Track. See dolphins, whales (seasonal), manta rays, turtles and walk up to our historic lighthouse. It has the longest break in Australia -when the swell lines up.

Mudlo Rocks

Wander here at low tide, play in rock pools and watch 4WDs navigate any exposed rocks. ALWAYS check conditions and ask locals before you 4WD - it is not always safe, even close to low tide.

Middle Rock

When tides and conditions allow, the walk to Middle Rock and back is a beautiful way to check out the Coloured Sands. From here, vehicle permits are required and dogs are prohibited.

Inskip Point

This peninsula is the gateway to Fraser Island, a favourite fishing spot and pet friendly camping grounds for generations. Only 15 minutes drive (2WD) from Rainbow Beach.

Freshwater Picnic Area

Walk to and swim in nearby Freshwater Lake, picnic or BBQ at the beautiful shady day-use area, found before Freshwater Road reaches Teewah Beach. 4WD only.

Tin Can Bay Foreshore

Walk 4km from Crab Creek to Norman Point, over picturesque bridges, signage of flora and fauna, through mangroves, playgrounds and outdoor gyms. It is mostly flat and very safe for children on wheels. Look out for 137 species of birds.

Tin Can Bay Wildflower Walk

Known for spectacular wildflower species, access this trail from the corner of Emperor St and Oyster Parade. Best in late winter and early spring.

Boat Ramps

You can launch your boat at Norman Point and Crab Creek in Tin Can Bay or Carlo Point and Bullock Point near Rainbow Beach. All except Bullock Point offer toilet and scenic picnic facilities.

Feed Wild Dolphins at Norman Point

Arrive from 7am, after feeding (fees apply), the dolphins leave for another day. A picturesque peninsula with public pool, playground, sailing, boat ramp and pontoon and picnic facilities.

Carlo Point

For spectacular sunsets over the water, take a cheese platter or fish and chips and watch the day’s end. This favourite fishing spot is only 3 km from Rainbow Beach.

Great Sandy Strait

If you love the wonderful peace and relaxation of sailing or cruising, the sheltered waters around Tin Can Bay are for you. You may see dugong, turtles, dolphins and more in this section of the Great Sandy Marine Park.

Fraser and Cooloola Great Walks

A 90 km trail showcases natural

and cultural features of the world’s largest sand island between Dilli Village and Happy Valley. Or trek 102 km from Noosa to Rainbow Beach through sandblows, past lakes and spectacular views.

Fraser Island K’gari

World heritage listed, K’gari has over 40 lakes, rainforests, sand dunes, wildlife, four wheel driving and fishing! Take a 1 or 2 day tour, hire a 4WD or take your own. Cross the barge at Inskip Point, permits are online or at the Parks Office.

THE COOLOOLA CoastCare

Turtle Care team was invited to a behind the scenes tour of the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital (AZWH) and what a day it was!

The Turtle Care team has a great relationship with the hospital. AZWH treats the sick or injured sea turtles that we rescue on the Cooloola Coast from Tin Can Bay, Carlo, and Inskip.

We were met by AZWH Sea Turtle Supervisor, Jacob and Vet Nurse Breanna who guided our tour. Their knowledge and passion for their job was truly amazing.

AZWH was built in 2004 and operates the same as a general hospital. It is exclusively for wildlife: birds, reptiles, mammals, bats, and sea life. Over a 12-month period between 9,000 to 10,000 animals are brought to the hospital.

Sick or injured animals are checked in at reception, taken to triage, then if necessary to a surgical theatre. The hospital has an x-ray room, intensive care units, pathology lab, and rehabilitation wards and areas.

The intensive care ward has a hyperbaric chamber which is utilised to treat koalas and other patients suffering burns injuries by supplying 100% oxygen.

The complex has an amazing kitchen stocked with a huge variety of foods to cater for all the different animals.

Of special interest to us was the sea turtle area. This area has a pool to test the turtle’s ability to dive and swim and 3 treatment tanks. To transfer these large animals (average weight is 90kg) between the pool and tanks is a hoist system with a cargo-like net.

It was a great day and we can’t thank Jacob enough for sharing his time and knowledge.

Stellar efforts from Tin Can Bay Bowlers

WHAT A TERRIFIC month for Tin Can Bay bowlers. A stellar effort by the men saw them win the first round of the pennants – well done guys.

Ladies Singles Champ Kay Cude played Bettina from Pomona in the final of the division Champion Of Champions, close but no cigar 25-20 – next year Kaye.

Ladies Pairs Champs Lorraine Stockham and Rowena Giles won their division final and are now off to Pialba for district games.

Ladies Triples games were

completed with Ann Huson, Rowena Giles, and Lorraine Stockham victors over Sandra Fox, Gail Summerville, and Carmel Mills.

Barefoot bowls had 52 attendees despite the cooler weather; more children due to school holidays and they had a ball. Thank you again to the team who run this event every month.

Our next event is the Tin Can Bay Ladies Open on 2 August, come along and watch some entertaining games. The Mens Open is in October. Bowlers please note that Bowlers Paradise will be in attendance at the Ladies Open.

Dragons roar at 20th Celebration

THE COOLOOLA DRAGON Boat Club held their 20th Anniversary celebrations on Saturday 1 July at the Tin Can Bay Yacht Club. The event was very well attended by past and present members.

Councillor Jess Milne, a longtime and enthusiastic supporter of Cooloola Dragons, was in attendance as were several members of the Tin Can Bay Yacht Club. The support of Jess and the Yacht Club members is a very welcome and important aspect of CDBC activities.

Also, some members of the Hervey Bay Dragon Boat club braved the highway and travelled to take part in the celebrations; their attendance was very much appreciated by Cooloola club members! One of the great indicators of the friendships that develop in the sport.

Being the 20th anniversary, the theme was the Roaring ‘20s. All-in-all, about 60 people donned spectacular 20s-era costumes and their aim was to party, party, party.

Most of the ladies were wearing 20s flapper dresses, high heels, and lots of ‘bling’. It was certainly a glimpse of what life might have looked like in the 1920s. Most of the men also got into the spirit and donned clothing of the same era.

I don’t suppose they would mind it being said that some of them could have passed for members of a Peaky Blinders gang or for being one of Al Capone’s henchmen. We even had a couple of men who looked suspiciously like the Blues Brothers.

Live music was provided by guitarist Ronnie J who put on a fabulous display as he worked through a huge repertoire of songs. He had barely started playing his first set when a number of couples got onto the dance floor and displayed their skills at a number of dance steps –including the famous Charleston.

Early in the evening, the catering staff began serving scrumptious finger-food, including the well-known prawn straws as the entrée to the main meal. The main meal came and went and there were not many plates that had any leftovers.

Following the main meal, there were some short speeches (complete with amusing anecdotes about days gone by) given by club President Robyn and Head Coach Sandra. After the speeches, there was more dancing and socialising to be done and Ronnie J continued to provide fabulous music.

At the appropriate juncture, the celebratory cake was cut by past members Norma and Andrea assisted by Jan Low (aka, J-Low) who

is now our longest-serving member. A great night was had by all and we proved that Tin Can Bay can put on a fantastic event.

CDBC would like to thank all the staff at the Yacht Club who worked in the kitchen, carried out waiting duties, and served in the bar — especially Tash and Taneal who put in a lot of work to get the job done. The entire team was super-enthusiastic and did a wonderful job all evening.

The next big event for the Cooloola Club is when they venture north again to compete at the Hervey Bay Dragon Boat Regatta at the end of July –

details next month.

Please also bear in mind that the Cooloola Club’s regatta is scheduled for the weekend of 2 and 3 September. Owing to the large number of competitors attending the Cooloola Regatta, we have reliable information that accommodation in Tin Can Bay has become very difficult to obtain. This must be a nice little boost for local business!

We hope that a large number of our local community come down to Snapper Creek to watch and support the many teams who will be competing.

IT DOESN’T get boring at the Tin Can Bay Country Club with the comings and goings of our sporting representatives. It’s my job to get onto the golfing side so let’s tee off.

In mid-July the Men’s Pennants team wound down the five-week Pennants representative season proper playing Maroochy River at Nambour. Our team was successful and now qualify for the semi-finals so stay tuned.

Our Ladies Pennants team wrapped up their season by making it to the semi-finals however they succumbed to the pressure applied by their opponents Twin Waters who went on to win the division.

It should be noted that the ladies played that semi-final in the cruellest weather nature could throw at them with some extreme conditions. We’ll get ‘em next time girls.

All Tin Can Bay Golf Club players are appreciated and to be congratulated on their efforts. Some more in depth details of the Pennants season matches will be on the Rainbow Beach Community News website.

On a local note, Club Captain Mark Ryan reports that our own golfing numbers are consistently good and we welcome social groups of players to the course often.

There are plenty of modern electric golf carts available for hire if you choose not to walk. Get yourselves a group together and come out to play a social game. Our Pro-Shop has the fridge stocked and we are ready to provide you with a fun-filled day.

If you are planning a family outing,

you can hire golf clubs and carts or trollies at reasonable prices. For those that do not wish to drive and you live locally, avail yourself of our courtesy bus and get home safely.

Tin Can Bay Country Club Golf Club had a good turnout for the Pro-Am event held on 4 July.

Our Greens Superintendent Craig and his staff did a magnificent job in getting the course ready for the day. There were 45 professional golf players and 101 amateurs in the event.

Thank you to all who participated in both organising and playing. Fortunately, the inclement weather didn’t do much to dampen the enthusiasm of the players.

Our extensive irrigation project is progressing well and it has been noted by many that the disruption to the golf course has been minimal.

During our regular Ladies comp on Wednesday 13 July, our own Carolyn Gamble had a hole-in-one on the 5th hole at Tin Can Bay. After hitting

BECAUSE OF HARD work put in by resident Golf Professional James Taylor and Junior Golfing Coordinator Janet Reibel, students at the Tin Can Bay State School are able to undertake golf as a sport.

The program sees 80 enthusiastic youngsters out on the course learning the basics and applying those skills to improve their abilities. Feedback from those involved has been good and everyone is enjoying the lessons.

It is hoped some will advance to become permanent junior members and be successful in golf thanks to James and Janet. [Ed. note: see page 27 for TCB school’s report on this popular program]

from the tee with her trusty 5 wood she wasn’t sure if the ball went in and asked her playing partners if they saw the shot. They all claimed the ball sailed through the green and was over the back.

Upon further investigation a delighted Carolyn discovered her ball was in the hole. Naturally, she was extremely pleased when presented with a bottle of Baileys Irish Cream. Well done, Carolyn!

None of the above would be possible without the efforts of the behind-thescenes workers at the club.

The administrative staff ensure everyone is up to date with fees and personal details, our excellent bar staff provide their untiring services with a smile, the dedicated greens staff prepare our course, the customer focused pro-shop workers and the many volunteers that help out with cooking BBQs and other essential tasks, so from our members, a huge thank you to all.

The successful ‘Kids Come & Try Golf Day’ has come and gone for this part of the year. Those that wish to can enrol in a program designed to develop golfing skills. For $40 kids can join up and be included in the program which will take them up to Christmas.

Also included is a Sunday morning competition at the low price of $5 each. In addition to this coaching and lessons will be available.

If you have a member of your family who wishes to participate in the junior’s program, please contact Janet Reibel through the reception ladies at the Country Club on 5486 4231.

Don’t forget, our Resident Golf Professional James Taylor is also available for adult golf coaching for those wishing to keep up with the kids. There are sessions available for novices and experienced golfers alike.

Yacht Club spicing things up in August

THERE HASN’T BEEN much, if any, sailing in June and July but there has been a lot of boat maintenance happening.

There have been new fittings, repairs to old ones, repairs to boat covers, and much hull polishing in

preparation for the shakedown sail later this month. That is when the proof of the pudding in maintenance skills is revealed!

Whilst the sailors have been busy with their tools, the catering staff have also been busy.

They are preparing to spice up the winter nights with a Mexican themed evening on Thursday 17 August. There are burritos, nachos, and tacos on the menu and possibly a margarita cocktail from the bar. Please refer to Facebook for the menu.

The evening is open to all, nonmembers and members who have a taste for Mexican cuisine. Mexican costumes are welcome. Bookings essential. Call 0487 623 625 and leave your details. Buen provecho!

WE HAD A BUSY July with several competition events being run during the month, and unfortunately we had to again cancel our kayak event for the second month in a row due to poor weather.

The winner of our June competition was announced at our monthly BBQ at our clubrooms on Saturday 1 July where Jim George won (for the second month in a row!) with a 105cm jewfish knocking Debbie George’s 95cm jewfish out of contention (all has now been forgiven, I think).

At the time of writing our Big Squid Week competition was underway and so far there have been a few caught. Members submit their best 4 squid caught during the week with the

competition based on length when measured on a brag mat; entries are submitted as photos to our Weigh Master.

On the social front we hosted River Heads Fishing Club at our clubrooms, where we put on a BBQ for around 50 members at our outside BBQ shelter area – a great time was had by all.

As indicated above I wrote this before the end of July so our beach fishing competition at The Oaks, Rainbow Beach is yet to be held. We will be fishing either side of the low tide and then holding a happy hour on the beach after the event with cheeses, homemade nibbles, and a few refreshments – we hope to continue with this practice for future competitions.

July Trip Report

The 6th trip for 2023, a go-as-youplease event held between Noosa River Mouth and the northern tip of Fraser Island on 15-16 July 2023.

We had lines down at 4am Saturday with lines up at 12pm Sunday, with fish in the weigh-in area by 1pm Sunday at The Deck@Sea Salt.

Onshore

Weather conditions were challenging with showers and strong winds across the beaches providing a small window of fishable conditions onshore.

Offshore Conditions were equally as challenging with strong winds and showers. Due to the conditions competitor numbers were down on previous trips.

Despite the adverse conditions some good bags of fish were presented at the weigh-in.

Tides

Saturday: high tide of 1.41m was at 6.17am with low tide of 0.50m at 12.17pm (Noosa Head times). We fished 3 nights before the black moon. We had 11 nominations for the trip including 1 junior weighing in fish.

What is a stroke?

A stroke happens when blood supply to the brain is interrupted. Blood is carried to the brain by blood vessels called arteries. Blood contains oxygen and important nutrients for your brain cells.

(haemorrhagic stroke). When brain cells do not get enough oxygen or nutrients, they die. The area of brain damage is called a cerebral infarct.

How do you know if someone is having a stroke?

The Stroke Foundation recommends the F.A.S.T. test as an easy way to remember the most common signs of stroke. Using the F.A.S.T. test involves asking these simple questions:

• Face: Check their face. Has their mouth drooped?

Arms: Can they lift both arms?

What is Multiple Sclerosis (MS)?

MS is the most common acquired chronic neurological disease affecting young adults, often between the ages of 20 to 40 and, in Australia, affects three times more women than men. As yet, there is no cure.

There is no known single cause of MS, but many genetic and environmental factors have been shown to contribute to its development.

In MS, the body’s own immune system mistakenly attacks and damages the fatty material – called myelin – around the nerves. Myelin is important for protecting and insulating nerves so that the electrical messages that the brain sends to the rest of the body, travel quickly and efficiently.

As the myelin breaks down during a MS attack – a process called demyelination – patches of nerves become exposed and then scarred, which render the nerves unable to communicate messages properly and at risk of subsequent

degeneration. This means that the brain cannot talk to other parts of the body, resulting in a range of symptoms that can include a loss of motor function (e.g. walking and hand and arm function, loss of sensation, pain, vision changes, and changes to thinking and memory).

What are the most common symptoms of MS?

MS has many symptoms, which can be variable and unpredictable. No two people will experience exactly the same symptoms and these symptoms can be a one-off occurrence, can come and go, or change in severity over time. MS symptoms can be experienced in different parts of the body, depending on which part of the brain, optic nerve, or spinal cord is affected.

Some symptoms are invisible, meaning other people can’t visibly see that someone is experiencing a symptom.

If you’re living with MS, speak with your neurologist, MS Nurse or GP about any new and/or ongoing symptom concerns and to develop a personalised management plan, including any medications, treatments or lifestyle modifications to manage your MS.

There was limited scope for new projects in the 2023/24 Budget however it was the huge community push over the last few years that finally got the Tin Can Bay off-leash dog park over the line so a big thank you to everyone who called, emailed and put in submissions as this gave me the community needs data to be your voice.

Raising funds instead of raising glasses

Pyjama Angels like Deb are matched to a local child in care, and through the Love of Learning Program, spend time each week with the child, reading, helping with homework, and playing educational games. This vital work helps turn around these children’s lives.

‘We saw an opportunity to help out a friend that we knew was so passionate about this deserving charity, as well as giving ourselves a little health kick in the process,’ Megan told me.

IT WAS LATE January, while gathered to partake in a glass or two of bubbly that three friends, Kathy Carlisle, Megan Dahl, and Sally McKay decided to go dry for the month of February – and have now recovered enough from the gruelling ordeal to be public about their accomplishment (joke!).

Enter local Pyjama Angel, Deb Taylor, who was on the lookout for a fundraising idea to help out her beloved charity, The Pyjama Foundation.

‘By pledging to go dry for the month, we were able to inspire some close friends and family to support our efforts and managed to raise $885!’ She added proudly. Amazing work ladies!

Skipping

At Tin Can Bay P-10 State School, skipping during lunch breaks has become a familiar sight as students trade their normal routines for a more active, fun, and social activity.

Students from Prep to Year 10 have loved challenging each other with how many jumps they can do and how fast they can jump. Team skipping has also been a hit!

Apart from being great exercise, skipping at lunchtime offers social and emotional benefits. It brings students together, fostering friendships from Prep to Year 10 as they cheer each other on, try out new tricks, and encourage one another to reach their skipping goals.

Teacher Aide, Miss Georgia said, ‘Students enjoy the chance to socialise and challenge each other. More and more students are grabbing a skipping rope and joining in on the lunchtime skipping sessions. It’s wonderful!”

Hopefully the skipping trend will continue as it has proven to be an exciting addition to the lunchtime breaks.

‘Nice shot!’ were the words of our Tin Can Bay students to each other during the Term 2 Golf Program. The program was hosted by our local Golf Professional, James Taylor and his team at the Tin Can Bay Golf Club. The program was funded by a Sporting Schools grant that was gained in the hope to give our students a different sporting opportunity and to also develop a possible life-long passion to get out on the course.

We look forward to the possibility of gaining more funding throughout the year to support Physical Education at the school and give our students more opportunities to learn through sport.

Crested Bellbird

WITH A VERY cool hair-do and a distinctive high pitched belllike call, the aptly named crested bellbird is another example of Australia’s beautiful and unique avian wildlife.

Predominately found in the drier parts of Australia, it dines on seeds and small invertebrates, and is known to place caterpillars in and

around its nest; perhaps to act as a source of food for the parents and nestlings.

The male and female crested bellbird often duet, with the male calling from an exposed perch such as a dead branch or the top of a tree, with the female responding.

Their cup-shaped nests are made of fine sticks and twigs or bark, and lined with bark and leaves.

Acacia fimbriata

OUR AUGUST PLANT of the month is Acacia fimbriata, commonly known as the fringed wattle or Brisbane golden wattle.

It is a species of Acacia that is native along much of the east coast of Australia. It is a hardy, popular, evergreen, short-trunked tree with dense foliage cover of soft light green linear leaves.

A small tree, it grows to 5m mainly in moist areas, and has perfumed yellow ball flowers.

AFTER A BREAK of three weeks, the Learning Community has commenced its twice-weekly activities for Term 3, welcoming back some old friends from last year and also children from families new to the area.

We are blessed to have skilled leaders in our group who provide a wonderful range of activities each week.

Sherry O’Brien is continuing with her program based on Dan Sigel’s work of emotional resilience for the older group. Mo Riggs will be helping to expand the young people’s creativity with her fabulous art program, Kerry will be helping the older children sew their own apron and Aimee will be continuing with Spanish lessons for the younger ones.

During our first week we welcomed along well-known local Elisa, owner of Rainbow Beach Pizza with her husband Sean, who shared about what it was like to grow up in her home country of Sardinia and helped us cook amazing pasta. Curtis from the Gympie Library also visited with some of their fabulous toys to stretch the young people’s technical skills.

We are in the initial stages of creating a Cooloola Coast Guide for Families under the leadership of Kerry and Tyla that will highlight the best places to visit and activities in the area from a child’s or family’s point of view.

As part of getting the young people to think about our local area, longtime local Annette Collins came along to share her memories of Rainbow’s early days and the many changes that have taken place over the years. Rainbow Beach Community News will be sponsoring this project and

providing

much-needed advice with regards to content, layout and printing.

Other upcoming activities include a come and try day at the Tin Can Bay Golf Club, an oppurtunity to meet Councillor Jess Milne from the Gympie Council, and learning basic first aid with Cindy from Hartbeat Training in Gympie..

2023 Bush Dance – mark Saturday 16 September in your diary!

We would love to see you at the 2023 Bush Dance which is happening at the Community Centre on Saturday 16 September, again featuring Flashjack who helped make last year’s event so much fun.

Dancing with band members calling out the different moves will happen between 6 pm and 8pm, with hot and cold food available from 5pm and a delicious supper from 8 to 9pm. Tickets are available from the Community Centre office at $40 for a family, $15 adults and $10 children or from Tyla on 0432 651 722. Grazing platters will also be available and need to be pre-ordered with platters for 2-3 people costing $25 and platters for 4-6 people costing $35.

Community Pantry

The next Coolaflix night at the Rainbow Beach Community Centre on Saturday 12 August will be supporting the Community Pantry as the local organisation running the evening. The movie will be ‘Homeward Bound – the Incredible Journey’ released in 1993, which is one of the best family movies ever and features the voices of Michael J Fox and Sally Field. These evenings are fundraising events and we will be selling popcorn, hot and cold drinks, bags of lollies, hot soup and a bread roll and cake. Food

will be for sale from 5pm and the movie will commence at 6pm. Chairs will be set out, but you are welcome to bring your own or a rug for your family to sit on.

To date the Community Pantry has distributed over 1500 hampers to Cooloola Coast locals since its commencement in December 2021. We continue to distribute around 40 hampers each fortnight which are available to Cooloola Cove, Tin Can Bay, and Rainbow Beach residents for $10 and are worth between $50-$60 – a pension or healthcare card is not required.

Flyers with details of dates that the hampers are available and how to contact the Community Pantry can be accessed from the Tin Can Bay Centrelink office and the Rainbow Beach Community Centre. The Centrelink office also has a number of vouchers whereby local families or singles who are genuinely struggling can receive a hamper free-ofcharge. Hampers must be preordered and can be picked up from the office if recipients are unable to drive to Rainbow Beach themselves.

Pindari Life Ltd, a local charity based in Gympie, provides the pantry with governance and support.

Regular items include fresh fruit

and veggies and pantry staples such as cereal, pasta, and tinned veggies from Foodbank, bread from Ed’s Bakery, and a variety of items from Woolworths Cooloola that are end of line or near their best before date.
