E HAD SO much fun with the cover this month. As the Sports Club is holding their massive Country at the Beach event on the 7th, we wanted to jump on board and as Santa also makes his appearance soon well, it seemed like a great idea to combine all three.

The cover photo was taken by the talented and delightful Jess McKenzie from Rainbow Beach Wedding Photography, who jumped on board in one of her few free moments.

A big thank you to Andrew and Kelly from Rainbow Beach Horse Rides who took a day off to bring the horses down for the photo shoot.

Thanks to “Santa” who is one of the busiest people in the region and was going overseas the next day and still took the time to help us out. Can you guess who it is?

He’ll be making another visit on December 15 to the Rainbow Community Centre for the Rainbow Christmas Party which starts at 3pm. He will be arriving on The Green in style with a little help from his friends... loaded up with presents for the kids, so don’t miss that one.

There will be bands, markets, food and licenced beverages, presents, and all the money made on the day will be donated to charities assisting people/communities affected by the recent bushfires and the local school for school camps in 2020.

Gympie Regional Council has given both Rainbow Beach and Tin Can Bay a donation to put up Christmas lights so the whole region will shine.

A couple of beautiful Remembrance Services were held on the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month at Rainbow

Beach and Tin Can Bay. Amongst those honoured were Reverend Bruce Dorman and Hilton Simmonds who passed away recently. It is important this tradition is carried forward by our younger generations.

We have some wonderful stories of success in this issue and again we are thrilled to be able to introduce you to just a few more of the accomplished people we have in our midst.

Thank you to everyone for your contributions, photos, articles, and for the general goodwill you have shown to our paper and to me personally - we are so very lucky to have chosen this region to be our home - let’s work together to make it the best it can be.

Five live music performers are so far included in the line up, plus the Slip and Slide from the Surf Club and a licensed bar by The Sports and Rec Club.

The event will also include market stalls, various delicious foods and beverages and as mentioned, the early arrival of the big man himself with his sack full of goodies for the children.

Come along and enjoy this community event for all ages.

HAT STARTED out as a humble vision of the Rainbow Beach Community Centre to host a Christmas celebration with the aim to raise money for the school has quickly, and delightfully, escalated into a Community Christmas Party spectacle for ALL! As a handful of our community tourism operators and event coordinators have come on board, the event has taken a life of its own.

Freedom and Dingos Backpackers wanted to host a fundraiser for the people affected by the bushfires and it just so happened to be on the same date.

After swift and positive deliberation between all parties they have now all come together and are very proud to present the Rainbow Beach and wider community with Santa Comes to Rainbow – in a HELICOPTER (shhh don’t tell the kids!).

The event will be held in the Rainbow Beach Community Hall and on The Green on Sunday December 15, from 3pm until 7pm.

Of the funds raised, 75% will go to charities assisting people/communities affected by the recent bushfires, and 25% will go to the Rainbow Beach State School P&C who will use the money for school camps in 2020.

Santa is coming early to Rainbow Beach to party with the community on December 15!

Cooloola Cove Community Christmas and Carols I N A JOINT initiative between the Cooloola Cove Residents and Friends, Youth Activity Project, Wesleyan Methodist Church and Cooloola Cove Veterans and Community Hall, the Cooloola Cove Community Christmas and Carols is back again on Saturday December 14 from 2pm.

The event has an emphasis on social connection and community inclusiveness, so gather up the family, call your friends and tell the neighbour to come enjoy a casual afternoon of

free fun at the Cooloola Cove Veterans and Community Hall.

Gympie Regional Council have funded not one, but two jumping castles for the kids to boing on! Get creative at the YAP free kids craft table, try your luck with the Residents and Friends chocolate wheel, grab a bite to eat from the BBQ or café, join in the games or just laze around and enjoy the community spirit.

The carols will be held mid afternoon this year from about 4pm, as last year everyone was worn out from too much

fun! If the weather is too hot outside to sing silly season songs, the hall will crank up the aircon so everyone can let loose and get loud.

Father Christmas may even make an early trip from the North Pole with a sweet treat or two!

So for a couple of hours turn off Netflix, put down the youTube, Facebook, Instagram distraction and take the time to get back to basics of community connection this December, by catching up with old friends and making a few more.

EAN AND ELISA Seul met working in the kitchen of the Sports Club seven years ago, it was love at first sight between an Italian food lover and a passionate Australian chef.

With over 20 years of experience in hospitality, Sean is not only a professional chef, he is a manager, a teacher and a leader.

By the age of 19 he owned his first restaurant serving up Greek cuisine in Cairns.

He then moved to the Gold Coast, where he owned Italiano’s. “There is no doubt that Italian Cuisine has shaped the Australian palate” explained Sean.

At Rainbow Beach Pizza & Grill you will be delighted by gourmet pizza, along with other signature dishes and a unique brew of coffee.

Elisa said: “Back in Sardinia (Italy) one of my brothers is a chef, my cousins own a Pizzeria and when we go to Italy Sean loves checking out places and ... as my hometown warmly welcomes him, he comfortably ends up sneaking into the kitchens.”

She is also looking forward to starting her Italian Culture lessons again, knowing that Sean will enhance her classes with an authentic food experience.

ROCKS, BLING, SUITS and canapes mingled with Prosecco and dancing to ensure the success of the 2019 Annual ArtyBall.

Congratulations to the winning entry which was painted by Leonie Guerin and titled ‘Julie’, a ‘portrait’ of her friend and local lady, Julie Davidson.

Real estate agent Andrew Hawkins was the energetic auctioneer and ensured bids were fast and furious resulting in over $1000 raised from the auction alone.

Jan Forbes piece titled ‘Bill ‘n Lizzie’ was the emotional favourite of the evening with a mystery buyer snapping up the artwork for $240.

The photoart entry featured Rainbow Shores resident Bill with his dog Lizzie and has been presented to Bill as a gift in

memory of Lizzie who sadly passed away the week of the event.

The Recliners, with ex local Wolf Sievers on Rhythm guitar and vocals, came from Toowoomba and thrilled the crowd with all the favourites ensuring the dance floor was always full.

Congratulations to everyone who stepped up and entered artwork for the competition or attended the event.

Well done to the Rainbow Beach Sports Club who were incredibly generous with their donation of the venue and staff and provided wonderful food, drink and service for the party goers.

A successful event and congratulations to Leonie Guerin for organising and hosting this wonderful night with all the money being given back to the community.

Carnival fun on the Tin Can Bay foreshore!

Residents - prepare your emergency plan

ITH THE RECENT and ongoing emergency evacuations across the state now is the time to prepare your emergency plan.

Members of the Rainbow Beach Chamber and Community Centre recently met with the Chairman of the Cooloola Coast Community Local Disaster Management Support Group, Mr Terry Steele to discuss evacuation procedures for Rainbow Beach.

The Community Centre holds a number of Get Ready Guides from the Qld Fire and Emergency Services which are

available for residents and it is crucial that every household has an evacuation plan.

One of the best sources of up to date information is the Gympie Regional Council Dashboard which receives information as soon as it comes to hand by the Disaster Management Teams http://disaster.gympie.qld.gov.au/ In Rainbow Beach the Community Centre will be the base of the Emergency Operations and they will receive up to date directions and information from Gympie Regional Council.

EMERGENCY READY DOs: • Do stay tuned to local media for all warnings • Do follow instructions from authorities • Do keep children away from rivers, creeks, drains and flood waters A public meeting will be held at the Rainbow Beach Community Centre. Rainbow Beach Goes Underground

HE RAINBOW BEACH Surf Club will be running an Adult Bronze course starting Sunday December 1, 2019.

The course will run every Sunday at the conclusion of Nippers (10.30am) until Saturday January 18, 2020, when assessments will be held.

HE UNDERGROUNDING of power along the main street of Rainbow Beach is running to schedule with the trenching and laying of conduits, and the installation of new street lights set for completion before the start of the December school holidays.

Key locations along the footpaths have also been prepared ready for the installation of greenboys (access points for Energex).

Councillor Mark McDonald said that until the power poles are removed by Energex, both the existing power poles and the new greenboys will be in place.

“Having both the power poles and the greenboys in place will create a few squeeze points along the footpath and unfortunately this is unavoidable,” said Cr McDonald.

“All the cables will be underground by the start of the Christmas school holidays, but we will still need the power to be transferred to the underground lines and the power poles removed before it can go live, and this is significant work that must be completed by Energex,” he said.

“Where possible, Council will temporarily move items such as bins or benches to help relieve any squeeze points caused by the poles and greenboys but unfortunately there will be limitations on what can be done.

“We are asking for the community’s patience and understanding during this time,” he said.

As a general guide, wherever there is an existing power pole, a greenboy will be installed. Energex will be installing the greenboys and it is expected that all the greenboys will be installed before the Christmas school holidays.

In an effort to avoid the peak tourist period, Energex will commence work in February 2020 to remove the power poles and transfer the power underground. It is expected that the works relating to

the undergrounding of power will be completed before both the Queensland and New South Wales Easter school holidays.

The undergrounding of power along the main street of Rainbow Beach is the first phase in beautifying the street. Additional streetscaping works, including improving accessibility, installing new street furniture, planting new trees and gardens, as well as installing a new street crossing, are currently being designed.

EMEMBRANCE DAY Services were held across the Nation last month where veterans from all wars were honoured.

The 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month is significant as that is the day the ‘Great War’ World War 1 ended.

At last the guns fell silent and rejoicing for so many around the world began.

The Rainbow Beach service was presided over by Rainbow Beach RSL President Joe Casey and the Prayer was delivered by Reverend Ingrid Busk.

We would like to thank you for your ongoing support in 2019 and wish you all a healthy, wealthy, happy and safe Christmas and New Year. See you in 2020!

The recital of the poem Flanders Fields was an integral part of the day’s ceremony as it was a major battle theatre during The Great War. This poem written by Lt Colonel John McCrae, a Canadian Soldier, inspired the use of the Poppy which grew on Flanders Fields and became, and remains the enduring symbol of remembrance throughout the world.

That same poppy also flowers in Turkey in early spring, as it did when the Anzacs landed in Gallipoli in 1915, The last post which signifies the end of life for the fallen now their duty is done was performed by bugler Jamie Lee Griffiths and was followed by silence. Reveille was then sounded which symbolizes the awakening of the dead to duty in a different place.

I

N 2013, THE COOLOOLA Coast Local Ambulance Committee funded an initiative to have house numbers stencilled on driveways in Rainbow Beach since mailboxes are not used in the town.

This project was undertaken as Ambulance Officers were reporting difficulties in responding to emergency callouts due to a lack of signage on houses.

The numbering has worked well but time and the elements have meant that a lot of the numbers are now illegible.

When an emergency call is made to triple zero (000), it is vital that the paramedics are able to respond in the shortest possible time. That means being able to identify the relevant address. It is in everyone’s best interest to have their house number clearly visible.

The Gympie Regional Council will supply house numbers free of charge to residents. The numbers can be collected from the Planning Department at 29 Channon Street, Gympie opposite the police station. It would be preferable to take your rates notice with you so that your house number (not lot number) can be correctly identified.

An alternative would be to purchase the numbers from a hardware store ensuring

that they are reflective (for night time visibility) or can be covered in reflective tape.

As an emergency can occur at any time, it is most important that you are able to get medical assistance as quickly as possible.

Rainbow Beach inspires

Dr Suzie Starfish I

WAS BROUGHT up in regional Queensland, spending much of my childhood at the beach, camping and enjoying nature. This, coupled with drawing and creating quirky characters, are some of my fondest memories growing up, which probably led to my alter ego Dr Suzie Starfish.

I have been visiting Rainbow Beach since I was five years old and it is such a special place to me. My real name is Dr Sue Pillans.

I am a marine scientist, artist, graphic recorder and children’s author/illustrator (“Authorstrator”) who specialises in creative and visual communications through my small business “Picture your ideas”.

I have a PhD in Marine Science and I am

an adjunct Research Fellow in the Centre of Biodiversity and Conservation Science at the University of Queensland.

As Dr Suzie Starfish, one of my biggest joys is to visit schools, kindergartens and libraries to bring the living oceans indoors.

I’m very excited about my series of ocean-science picture books, which I often illustrate at Rainbow Beach.

I hope that through my stories children of all ages fall in love with and ‘sea’ the beauty in nature, so they want to look after our coasts and oceans, like our beautiful Rainbow Beach.

Thanks Reverend Scott and good luck in Nambour

HE COOLOOLA COAST community is saying another good-bye this month to the Reverend Scott Lucas of the Cooloola Coast Wesleyan Methodist Church, who leaves us to look after the Nambour Wesleyan Methodist Church from January 2020.

Scott and wife Donna first came to Gympie in August 2000 on their sixth wedding anniversary with their two young preschool-aged children, Caleb and Alex, who are now 23 and 22.

Scott said: “When I arrived what I found is that it’s the people that make a place. It’s not the geography, and the whole Cooloola Coast, including Gympie, has been a great place to raise our children and be part of close communities and wonderful people.

“I have learnt that people of all ages need somewhere to belong. We long to be loved and valued and my hope

for our Church at Cooloola Wesleyan Methodist is that we are that place.

“So many times, new people or visitors have come and said, ‘It feels like a family and I am so comfortable here.’ And that’s what we all want – a family to belong to where we are loved and valued.”

Rev Gary McClintock will take Cooloola Wesleyan back into the fold and the Church will function as normal.

Scott said: “There is a sadness, as we will miss our Church families here at Cooloola and in Gympie, but it’s exciting as well. Our sons are adults and making their way in the world now.

“Thank you to our local Cooloola Coast community for having us. It’s been a pleasure to serve here and we will miss you.”

FTER TWO-AND-A-HALF years, my time in the Cooloola Coast region as part-time Anglican Community priest came to a sad but beautiful farewell last month.

Rainbow Beach reflects the beauty of not only the natural surroundings, but of the people who live in the region and also the many visitors who are attracted to come and relax.

Over my short time ministering here, I have encountered the various aspects of being a priest. We have farewelled many who no longer are able to stay in their own homes and have moved away to be closer to families.

I have officiated at funerals, a wedding and a baptism, offered prayers at the Rainbow ANZAC Day, Vietnam Day and Remembrance Day services, as well as the Sunday worship services. The Good Shepherd Church celebrated 25 years in 2018.

Being part of the ‘What’s New In the Zoo’, the Christmas Festival, World Day of Prayer and the Lantern Festival are a few of the memorable times I carry with me back to my home in Maleny.

My prayer for this beautiful region is for the friendly, hospitable and caring people who live in the Cooloola Coast area to be richly blessed as they themselves bless others. I also pray for a much needed medical centre to be established.

I have left a little part of myself with you, because of the moments we have shared. The fun, sad, happy, celebratory and worship. In turn I carry a little of the

Rainbow Beach Police Beat

ERTAIN EVENTS at the beginning of November saw me mulling over the concept of luck. The word luck is thought to have Dutch origins with the word coming from ‘luc’ - a shortening of the old Dutch word ‘gheluc’ – meaning happiness or fortune. If you think about it there are numerous phrases which are used by people every day referring to luck, good or bad.

‘Touch wood’ is one such phrase and I’m sure you’ve all heard this expression.

It’s commonly blurted out by someone after they’ve made a bold statement relating to some good luck they’ve had in the past - or hope to have in the future. The statement is then followed by a desperate search for some wooden item to touch, to avoid this ‘good luck’ turning ‘bad’.

I said “touch wood” during a recent conversation with my offsider Mick. We were happily discussing an apparent reduction in the number of times we’d been ‘called out’ to attend urgent jobs while off duty.

You can probably see where this is going… Yep, despite touching plenty of wood (a table, a chair, my head), about an hour later my phone rang and I was off chasing a drunken idiot who was running amok in Rainbow.

This bloke was pretty lucky because despite trying to fight numerous people

Are you feeling lucky? around town (including yours truly) and not having the size or skills to back it up - he ended up back in his hometown of Gympie without a scratch. He did however, collect an expensive souvenir of his trip to the coast in the form of an $800 Public Nuisance ticket.

Another phrase you’ve probably heard is, ‘Luck of the Irish’. Turns out this might not apply to all Irishmen – particularly the one we encountered last month.

While this little bloke had been quite lucky - regularly drink driving around town without being caught - his luck was about to run out. Maybe he forgot to ‘touch wood’, or (more likely) he

simply upset the wrong person, because we were made aware of his antics and got him drink driving in the middle of town.

After issuing him with the relevant paperwork (including a notice immediately suspending his driver’s licence), we sent him on his way.

The Irishman obviously still felt lucky, because he walked straight from the Rainbow Beach Police Beat to his car and tried to drive home – talk about ‘pushing your luck’. Mick quickly showed him the error of his ways and word is that he now feels ‘down on his luck’ and wants to leave town.

Still on the subject (of luck), I was recently made aware of a social media post asserting that an element of ‘luck’ was required to get in contact with the local police. Some of the comments I read seemed to suggest it would be easier to ‘find a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow’ than to make contact with the Rainbow Beach Police.

I may be exaggerating a tad, but the gist of the thread was ‘frustration’, so hopefully I can help you out.

Whatever method you use, if you take the time to make the call we will attend to your complaint.

If we’re not working and it’s urgent, we will be called out and attend straight away, if it’s not urgent we will come and see you the next time we’re working – no luck required…

Mating scars on the one of the Grey Nurse Sharks at Wolf Rock

Mating Season at Wolf Rock

F YOU SEE A Grey Nurse Shark (GNS) at Wolf Rock throughout the year the chances are that it is a female.

That is because Wolf Rock is the only known site in Queensland where pregnant GNS aggregate.

However, between the months of October and December the Male GNS arrive for mating season and the encounters can be up close and personal!

The boys are very active and regularly come up to our divers to see if we are potential breeding partners!

Thankfully for our divers we are not the sharks cup of tea as the pre-mating courtship is a violent and brutal act.

The boys will follow a girl for a short period before attempting to latch on, they don’t have hands, so they use their mouths

to bite the pectoral fin of the female shark before finally mating.

The female Sharks are often not interested and violently let the potential suitor aware of this fact with an equally aggressive retaliatory series of bites.

We have witnessed this spectacular behaviour on a couple of occasions and it really is a sight to behold: two three metre Sharks weighing upwards of 200kg biting each other in a whirlwind of mayhem!

This behaviour must be going on a lot during this period as all the GNS on the site are covered in deep mating wounds.

The importance of Wolf Rock to the survival of the critically endangered GNS species is unprecedented and is the reason it was made a Green Zone.

Rainbow Beach P&C thanks all volunteers and businesses

AINBOW BEACH STATE School P&C held a special certificate presentation and refreshments at parade last month to recognise the wonderful support from the businesses and volunteers of our Rainbow community.

Jed Elmer (P&C President) spoke to the students and attendees about the ‘good deeds’ the community had undertaken over the 2019 school year. They included; donations, baking cakes, preparing food, staffing the BBQ and other stalls,

administrative duties, and providing free or heavily discounted products for events.

Year 1 student James Fitzgerald even sold his artwork to raise funds!

“The volunteers and businesses have contributed so much energy into supporting the P&C, asking for nothing in return, and that deserves recognition and gratitude. We wouldn’t be able to operate the events to raise funds for the students without them,” Jed Elmer said.

This year, funds raised have contributed to school camps, student transport and school equipment.

Special acknowledgement and heartfelt gratitude was given to Kirstie-Jordison for her outstanding service in her role as President and Vice-President over the last four years, who will be stepping down at

New President Jed Elmer with Leanne Bosse who has been a great help to the school and P&C, and has been running the breakfast club for the kids

the end of the school year.

BJ Parton who managed the tuckshop every week for many years has also stepped down. The P&C are overwhelmingly grateful for her support and the students will miss her!

Who wants their meals home delivered in Rainbow Beach?

IN CAN BAY Meals on Wheels has a new committee and is wanting new clients from Rainbow Beach!

A recent changing of the guard at the Tin Can Bay Meals on Wheels saw a new committee elected bringing with them new ideas and enthusiasm.

The new committee comprises President – Robyn Saul, Vice President – Vic Saul, Secretary – Jen Ladynski, Assistant Secretary – Di Warren, Treasurer – Julie Collins and Assistant Treasurer – Julie Thorne.

Already this new committee has quadrupled the number of previous clients with the production and delivery of a flyer promoting their service delivered into Rainbow Beach, Cooloola Cove and Tin Can Bay. Meals are cooked on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays in our Council-approved kitchen and are delivered to Tin Can Bay and Cooloola Cove on those days and to Rainbow Beach on Mondays and Fridays – if demand grows – so will the service.

Frozen meals can also be provided and delivered

for the days when we do not cook. A three-course meal will cost you $12.50 delivered to your door, but if you do not want all three courses this can be adjusted and pricing altered accordingly.

This service is for anyone, regardless of income, age or medical condition. You do not need approval from anyone to make use of our service.

If you or a family member think they could take advantage of our service simply phone 0427 701 922 and a friendly committee member will visit and discuss your requirements ...we are just a phone call away.

The down side to all the good news, however, is that we are in need of delivery personnel and kitchen hands.

If you are wanting to give back to your community by way of volunteering and have a happy disposition and are a team player we would love to hear from you!

We are particularly keen to have newstart participants and those who are in possession of a Safe Food Handling Certificate.

HERE’S NOTHING better as a kid than being outside and getting dirty, so the Friends of the Cooloola Foreshore kindy kids nature morning had nothing but smiles all round.

Little eco warriors from the Kids Bizz Early Education Centre and local Gympie District Family Daycare providers came together to explore the Tin Can Bay foreshore reserve.

Led by Jess Milne on a discovery of natural wonders, beauties were admired and beasties were hunted down.

A short stroll took the kids on a journey past various types of plants that flower, seed, creep, climb, smell and host other critters.

After a brief instruction it was time to get down and dirty by helping revegetate a bare area with some plants that will be able to be monitored as they grow over the years. Everyone also got to see how water crystals expand before adding some to the planting hole to help hydrate during the dry days.

Both kids and carers took away new knowledge, and walking the foreshore bushland will never look the same again.

The Remembrance Service held at the TCB RSL Sub Branch with G. Braganza, Deputy President; Councillor Mark McDonald; Pastor John Van Der Heidjke

HIS YEAR HAS gone by so quickly and now it is nearly Christmas and New Year is not so far away.

Firstly, I would like to include a big thank you from one of our members whose camera evidence was used after the accident at Bayside and Tin Can Bay Rd on November 11, 2019.

He and the local police would like to thank the staff from the Army (Royal Military College Duntroon) who were in the area conducting final assessment of our future leaders. The staff were first on the scene and took charge of the accident until emergency services arrived.

The professionalism of the medical team and the officers at the scene in managing the traffic and crowd during the incident are a credit to their training and leaves the community in no doubt as to the professionalism of our Military Forces.

Thank you to the Cadre staff and their professional and highly trained staff for being on location.

This incident was on Remembrance Day and the Sub Branch would like to thank all those who were present at the service, including members of RMC Duntroon who also attended. It was good to see such a local turnout.

At the Sub Branch we had a good, if not busy month with Melbourne Cup Day quite successful but a disappointment for some with the protest on

the cup. Well, we will try again next year, hope you picked a winner and had a good time.

Our Veteran and Community morning teas have been going well and the next one on December 10 is our last for the year and is Christmas themed, so get your tinsel on and come along, starts at 10am again with Laurence performing.

On Saturday December 7 we will be having our Christmas Dance, $5 entry with proceeds going to charity. Mike and friends will be performing so come along and enjoy. We will be cooking hamburgers, so you can have dinner before you start.

On Saturday December 21, the Christmas Raffle will be drawn, again we have Karaoke Keith performing for the afternoon, some snacks on offer and hopefully you will get lucky with a raffle.

With Christmas Day being on a Wednesday, the bar will not be open, and not on Boxing Day either.

Our BBQs will be on all the way through December, but nothing will beat the November 10, when we had the Army come through while they were conducting their open day. Kept us busy but we managed and had a very successful day.

On that note, I and the other committee members would like to thank all who have supported the Sub Branch over the past year and we hope you all have a great Christmas and an even better new year.

City Farm plant of the month

AVETTA AUSTRALIENSIS is a shrub occurring in dry rainforest along the Queensland coast and into northern New South Wales. It is often called the ‘butterfly bush’ because it attracts butterflies, including the Richmond Birdwing butterfly, but it is appealing also to other beneficial insects and honeyeaters.

Clusters of white, perfumed flowers that grow in abundance from spring into summer are Pavetta’s main attraction.

(Pavetta is from the same family as the gardenia - Rubiaceae). Hard, round berries follow the flowers.

This is a hardy shrub which will tolerate most soils, does prefer some shade - it is often an understorey plant in its natural environment - and can be pruned to shape.

As with most plants in our environment, mulching is recommended, or it may suffer in prolonged dry periods. This attractive, aromatic, insect- and bird-attracting shrub will suit any garden and should be more widely known.

Cooloola Coast Probus to host a combined Christmas Lunch

S USUAL, Cooloola Coast Probus Club members have been out and about enjoying the fun, friendship and fellowship that our club affords.

The highlight for November was of course attending the Cooloola Coast Bowls Club Melbourne Cup Lunch, a much-loved and annual event for our members.

The ladies fashions were superb, as were the wide variety of hats and fascinators, and awards were handed out to the best dressed, best hat, best dressed gent, etc.

M.C. Jill really kept things moving with the entertainment - the ukulele group, the Op Shop Fashion Parade, fun and jokes for everyone.

The ladies in the kitchen excelled themselves and the service was very prompt. A few of our members won their (small) fortune on the sweeps but

unfortunately we missed out on raffles.

However, all in all it was a great day absolutely enjoyed from start to finish by our members.

We vowed and declared to line up again for next year’s event!

We will finish the year hosting the Combined Christmas Lunch when we will be joined by Gympie, Gympie-Widgee and Maryborough Combined Probus Clubs.

Plans are well in hand for great food, entertainment and of course, Santa.

Christmas message from the Tin Can Bay Community and Men’s Shed M ERRY CHRISTMAS from ‘The Shed’ to the local businesses and individuals who have kindly supported and donated to us through 2019. It has been a difficult year, but all the hard work by the team has got us very close to completing the shed.

An important part of The Shed’s fundraising is our efforts for the ‘container for change’ program. Your support would be greatly appreciated by dropping off bagged eligible containers at the front of the shed (near the sign).

Tin Can Bay QCWA branch has success at the State Conference

News from Tin Can Bay Quilting Club

UR STATE CONFERENCE held at the Brolga Theatre in Maryborough was a great success. There were over 350 delegates at the conference, which was held over four days, including an Expo which was open to the public.

State competitions were judged and Tin Can Bay branch received two highly recommended - Bev for her rug and Wendy for her beekeeper.

On behalf of the Tin Can Bay branch, our president, Wendy, forwarded our donation for the Public Rural Crisis Fund to State President, Christine.

A cooking demonstration was held at our branch hosted by Country Kitchen, which is a program administered by QCWA, where we had an attendance of 14. The demonstration was to introduce healthy eating. Sessions next year will be open to the public where everyone is welcome.

Important dates for December are Craft on the first Wednesday of each month at 10am and Hoy on the third Wednesday of each month at 10am - $7 entry.

HIS MONTH HAS been a month of decisions, Christmas party plans, 2020 dates to recommence after Christmas break, projects for next year and bus trips to be taken.

Jacque and Barbara are at the helm teaching folded Christmas stars, with all ladies completing the stars with much fun and shenanigans. Also, the showing of lovely placemats and bright table runners as well as a bright bag.

Some of our ladies who have never quilted before are completing lovely items to be proud off, with a little guidance from friends This month we had the army at the Community Complex, much to our delight.

We are always looking for new members, we are a friendly group. There is always someone to help you, friendships are easily made and visitors are welcome.

Dolphin Transport is available for medical appointments REPORT Norma Sanderson

HERE ARE STILL a lot of visitors taking advantage of four or five dolphins each day. We haven’t had the best weather conditions for November, but the dolphins don’t seem to mind howling winds or rough water.

Harmony has been still causing havoc with Patch. Patch, of course, doesn’t like confrontation, therefore steers clear. He sometimes waits near the boat ramp until Harmony returns out into the bay. This is not good for Patch as he could be hit by a boat near the ramp.

Unfortunately we still get people standing on the boat ramp or pontoon trying to encourage the dolphins closer.

These people are self-centred and are only thinking of themselves not about rules or the plight of the dolphins.

I am amazed that people do not read the signs which are in full view about standing on the ramp and pontoon.

These notices are placed by the Dept of Harbours and Marine and should be adhered to. Only those people boarding boats should be there.

Don’t forget if you are locals, you can enter the Dolphin Centre for free, just pay for feeding if you wish to do so.

Come on in and bring your visiting friends and relatives.

T’S EASY TO overlook the fact that our community is constantly changing as people move out of and into the area. But to my amazement, Cooloola Coast Medical Transport is news, even to locals who have been here for several years.

What we do is simple: We take clients to and from non-urgent scheduled medical appointments, anywhere between Brisbane and Hervey Bay. We pick clients up from their home in Rainbow Beach, Cooloola Cove, Tin Can Bay and surrounds, take them to their appointments, wait in the general area and when they are finished, they call us and we pick them up and take them safely home.

What will it cost: Our charges are modest and cover the administrative costs of providing the service. We are a non-profit organisation.

All our staff and drivers are volunteers and their time is free of charge. Call the office on 5486 2488 to get a price for your needs.

Can I get financial assistance: A Patient Travel Subsidy Scheme (PTSS) is available, which our clients can apply for to offset costs; certain conditions apply, so check with your GP.

What if I am facing extended treatments: We have recently implemented our own subsidised pricing for those clients facing extended repeat visits, such as cancer and dialysis, and if your need is in that category just drop into the office to see what we can do to help.

And if a client has a carer or family member who needs to travel with them, this is welcomed.

Thanks for a fantastic year Tin Can Bay staff, students and parents!

Years 7-10 Tin Can Bay School Leadership Camp In Term 4, students in Years 7-10 who want to take on leadership opportunities in the future, were invited to attend the Tin Can Bay School Leadership Camp at Wappa Falls, Yandina.

Activities included the giant swing, Jacob’s ladder, mid ropes, abseiling and many more. We had great instructors who helped us through the best activities ever experienced.

The camp taught us many key points about being a terrific leader such as teamwork, cooperation and communication. The chefs gifted us with wonderful food and great service.

We were also involved in helping with breakfast, lunch and dinner. Overall, the camp was a great experience and we would take the opportunity to return.

The Army is in town!

Students were excited as Personnel from the Royal College of Duntroon, Canberra, Army infiltrated Tin Can Bay School to talk with students from Prep to Year 10. They discussed with students their roles, responsibilities, experiences and opportunities, so students could gain a better understanding of what they do and why.

Questions came thick and fast about what they are doing in Tin Can Bay at the moment, uniforms, vehicles, weapons, camouflaging, jobs, even the food they eat when on exercises!

My trip to the State Trials On the 15th and 16th of August, I was in Brisbane for the Queensland State Track and Field Trials as part of the Wide Bay school team. It was held at the Queensland Sports and Athletics Centre, a track where many well-known athletes have performed.

I competed in the 100m sprint, 200m sprint, long jump and the 400m circular relay. I ran my personal best times in my two sprints, with the times of 14.23sec in the 100m and 29.66sec in the 200m.

I felt very proud while running in my events as not many people get to have the opportunity to do what I have done.

The highlight of my trip was definitely the circular relay, made up of four students from different schools in the Wide Bay region, as I have never competed in one before, so it was a new experience. I hope that I can go back to the State Trials next year and do even better.

E WOULD LIKE to share some exciting news for our school.

The Queensland Government has announced a new pilot program called KindyLinQ. We are thrilled to have been chosen as a pilot site for the KindyLinQ program, as our community values early childhood education and the critical role families play in nurturing children’s early learning and development.

Our KindyLinQ program will provide a safe, supported space for families in our local community to come together with their children to play and learn.

We want to give all children a great start by helping develop their skills as a confident learner. The play-based nature of KindyLinQ is perfect for young children.

It enables them to explore, create, socialise and participate in different experiences.

Families with three-year-olds will be welcome to register for KindyLinQ. The program will be available for six hours a week across two or three days. Importantly, KindyLinQ is free for families. It is supported by the State Government through the Department of Education.

The school has been funded for a teacher and a community liaison officer to support this program. I am currently working through the logistics of staffing KindylinQ. There will always be press, both positive and negative, about new initiatives from governments, but in the end it is a great opportunity for our young children and parents to engage in the ‘play and learn’ nature of this program, when Rainbow Beach doesn’t necessarily offer other smiliar opportunities.

During this session, you have the opportunity to discuss your child’s academic, social and emotional

Coloured Sands Starting below the lookout, walk along the beach towards Double Island Point for a kilometre or so to these amazing Coloured sand cliffs, with the best colours around 9 to 10 kilometres along the beach (accessible with a 4wd or Surf and Sand Safari tour) 5486 3131.

Carlo Sand Blow A bush walk up to Carlo Sand Blow is a must for every visitor. Drive to the reservoir at the top of Cooloola Drive. The Blow is an easy 600m walk from the car park or take the longer walk from the National Parks Office. Spectacular views of the Coloured Sands, Double Island Point and Tin Can Bay Inlet are the bonus for your efforts. When the thermals are right, you will often see Hang Gliders taking off and landing at this beautiful piece of Nature’s Sculpture.

Lake Poona After morning tea or lunch in the picnic area you can venture on some wonderful walks to Lake Poona or through some spectacular Rainforest. Allow 40 minutes to reach Lake Poona.

Lake Freshwater Only accessible by 4WD, Tour or Walking. Walking tracks starts at the Bymien picnic area. The round trip from Rainbow Beach will take a full day and requires fitness.

Foreshore Tin Can Bay You can walk 4km from Crabs Creek to Norman Point, over picturesque bridges, signage of flora and fauna, through mangroves, playgrounds and outdoor gyms. It is mostly flat – very safe for children on wheels. Start at the playground opposite the library, cycle to Crabs Creek and stop for a coffee, then return to opposite the library. Enjoy the views out to the inlet while the kids enjoy the playground and skatepark.

BIT OF AN UP and down month it’s been for weather, however not bad for swell which has allowed us to get a majority of trips in.

It’s been busy with solid bookings and plenty of repeat and regular clients. Fishing has been better than expected for this time - as lots of people would know November can be tough - always being on the lookout for new ground has helped, providing more options on the slower days.

We’ve had some great bag-out days on some species and some real quality between them; the hardest thing is only picking two photos to put in this paper.

Training for Coastguard success Y

OUR LOCAL COASTGUARD at Tin Can Bay never rests when it comes to training. It is one of the cornerstones of preparedness for whatever we need to face. Like other emergency services, we sometimes need to put ourselves in danger to assist boaties in trouble. That is why, over the last month, we have been practicing our skills both IN and ON the water.

All our operational boat crew are required to be trained in sea survival skills, just in case something goes badly wrong when we are called to assist in difficult conditions.

Every year, boat crew members are required to undertake training in the water, in skills such as abandoning a vessel, launching and inflating a life raft, being able to right it from an inverted position, climbing aboard and assisting others to get in the raft.

We are also trained in survival techniques, such as the proper use of water and food rations, keeping cool or warm, slowing the drift of the raft, and attracting the attention of rescuers. We are required to do this training every year to retain our operational status.

Did you know that all Coastguard boat

crew are required to have first aid and CPR certificates, hold a marine radio licence and many other technical qualifications? Well, it is not only true, but this training is provided to our volunteer members free of charge.

If you have some spare time, come join us because you will get a great deal of personal satisfaction.

In addition to our survival skills, we often train with other agencies such as the Water Police, Ambulance and even the Australian Army. You may have noticed in the last few weeks that Coastguard has been working with the Army to train in counter-terror actions, and practice evacuations of coastal communities in case of fire, flood or other emergencies.

To round out our training operations, we also provide a number of educational courses to the general public in our community. You can train with us for a marine radio licence, first aid and CPR, or increase your skills in seamanship.

Our next public course is our ever-popular Bar Crossing Course which will be held on Sunday December 8. Phone the base on 5486 4290 if you would like to enrol in this course.

News from Tin Can Bay Fishing Club Inc

INTER MAY BE over but the persistent winds from the north and west, and a few short-lived southeast changes, have left only a few windows of opportunity to fish in favourable conditions this month.

Summer whiting has been plentiful lately (particularly on the incoming of the larger high tides). Both land-based and boat anglers have caught some quality fish in the mid to high 30cm range, with one of 40cm being caught by a landbased angler walking the shallows on the incoming tide, using yabbies for bait.

Time

Some reef areas in the bay have large numbers of undersized reef fish on them, so it can be an idea to use a hook of a slightly larger size to catch the better quality fish and therefore avoid catching the smaller ones, and not damage them while being caught and released.

Mangrove jack are becoming more active with results on both live and flesh baits and a few on lures. Let’s hope that they will be as prolific as they were last summer when there were some great specimens caught.

The reef areas are becoming more active with a few Grass sweetlip and some legalsized Nannygai being caught recently.

There have been large numbers of bonito and a few tuna seen recently around the Inskip to The Bluff area, feeding on small bait fish, so a well-placed cast with a small silver metal lure could result in a tug of war. Early morning when it is calm seems to be the most productive time.

Be aware of the ever-present turtles surfacing unexpectedly and the occasional slow-moving dugong.

Good numbers of quality fish can be caught by keen anglers at night around the full moon high tides. There have been a few flathead taken on yabbies while whiting fishing, but they seem fairly elusive to the lure fishermen lately with only the odd one being caught.

Tin Can Bay Golf Ladies turn pink for McGrath Foundation “W

OW” WHAT AN absolutely tremendous day! So much fun was had by all with players dressing in pink and decorating the buggies with pink ribbons, balloons and everything pink for the 2019 McGrath Foundation golf day at Tin Can Bay. All our golf flags for the day turned to bras of all shapes and sizes. A few tricky obstacles were placed around the greens, especially when you had to tee-off with a cricket bat that weighed a ton, use a marshmallow to tee off with instead of your ball, or putt through a wall of feathers!

A big THANK YOU must go to all the businesses in Tin Can Bay and Rainbow Beach and also our members who purchased our Secret Roses or donated goods for our

monster raffle.

We played the Pink Ball Game with our winners having 115 stableford points and they were Lyn Harris, Judy Hammond, Gayl Rose and Ros Wheeler.

Runners-up for the day were Desley Johns, Annette Hempenstall, Shirley Schaper and Viv Brown with 107 points.

Least amount of points with the Pink Ball were June Blanch, Di Oxton, Lis Bergmans and Sue Hawthorn.

Best Dressed for the day was Julie Mulhall and Di Oxton had the Best Decorated Buggy.

The day ended with many laughs and a well-deserved lunch.

At the end of the day the McGrath Foundation were the winners with a $2,000 donation.

The McGrath Foundation received a $2,000 donation from the Pink Golf Day.

T IS HARD TO BELIEVE that this is the Christmas edition of the RBCCCN for 2019!

So much has happened for the Dragons in 2019. It certainly has been a busy but fun-filled year of hard training, with great coaching from both coaches, Sandy and Shane....love your work!

We have had great competition at all regattas, some as Cooloola Dragons and some combined with our Dragon mates from Hervey Bay and Bundaberg as Wide Bay Warriors.

We continue to train for our final regatta for 2019 before breaking for two weeks over the Christmas

and New Year Season.

Last month the Cooloola Dragons/Wide Bay Warriors were at Lake Kawana competing in the Manly Regatta.

The Dragons will then take a well-earned break from December 22 to January 5, 2020.

We have welcomed three new members into our club this year and look forward to welcoming even more next year!

Many Firsts for Cooloola Coast Little Athletics!

ND THEN THERE was surfing!

With sign-on in October, the Rainbow Beach Boardriders welcomed new and past members. Our season started off with a friendly comp on the beachfront. Might not have been the best waves but it was a great gathering of surfers and their families all giving it a go and having fun!

Our club has been running for 33 years and keeps a little history going for loved ones and fellow surfers we have lost but not forgotten.

We hold a memorial classic every year to help keep those memories alive. January 18 will be the next Memorial Classic, so keep

the date open!

Everyone is welcome to join the Boardriders! If you can’t surf or are not the best at it, now’s your chance to get better with a little help!

If you do not have a board or a 4x4, the opportunity to get a lift or borrow a board is there, you only have to ask. Our surf comps run on the last Saturday of every month meeting at the surf club car park at 7am to discuss conditions, may be earlier depending on tides.

EN OF OUR athletes travelled down to the Nambour Little Athletics (LA) oval at the Sunshine Coast PCYC to compete in the Sun Coast Regional Relays.

This was the 1st first for the Cooloola Coast LA Centre as we’d never entered this Little Athletics competition before.

The 2nd first was the formation of a Cooloola Coast relay team made up of two U7’s and two U8’s from the Cooloola Coast centre making it a whole centre team instead of combining with other small centres.

The 3rd first wasn’t initially realized as an error occurred in the Regional Relays recorders room and after appeal it was recalculated that the Boys U13 Shot Put small centres team created by adding the two highest small centre results came in first place. Well done Logan Smith and his throw of 8.81m who will now compete with Louie Smeulders from Bli Bli LA at the State Relays.

The 4th first is CCLA have not one but two athletes representing at the State Relays as Logan will be joined by Anjelica Geurts whose small centre combined relay team qualified in the U13 Girls

4 x 100m and Medley. Well done guys!

Christmas is fast approaching and the Centre will be breaking over the festive season. With that joyous spirit in mind I’d like to take a moment to give thanks to all those that glue the Cooloola Coast Little Athletics Centre together.

Thanks to Coach Bill for the enthusiasm and the years of skill you pass onto the kids, all the parents who have stepped up to either coach, time keep, record, set up/ pack down or just lend a hand, the TCB School for allowing us to use their grounds, Sleepy Lagoon Hotel Social Club for thinking of us with a donation and a big thanks goes to Tin Can Bay Storage Sheds who have continued to sponsor the Centre that assists with funding the nominations to LA competitions, keeping registration fees affordable and allowing the Centre to focus on training instead of fundraising.

Best images of 2019 awarded at annual Presentation Night

The winner of the Tin Can Bay Camera Club’s A Grade Best Image was awarded to Leigh Reinhardt’s Abercrombie House - Congratulations!

019 CONCLUDED with the judging of the Best Images of 2019 and the presentation of trophies and awards. Peter O’Brien from Peninsula Camera Club at Redcliffe was the guest judge.

The A Grade Best Image was awarded to Leigh Reinhardt’s Abercrombie House, with John Murphy’s image Winter Sunrise awarded runner-up. In A/B Grade, New Leaf

by Frank Posch was the Best Image, and Melissa Haslam’s Thing was the runner-up.

Peter chose Bev Powell’s image Royal Bank

of Queensland as the Best B Grade Image, and Philippa Collins’ image Savanahlander was the runner-up.

Members voted in People’s Choice in all three grades. Cathy Reed’s Eastern Yellow Robin was the best A Grade image. In A/B Grade, Jan Johnston’s image Just Drifting was chosen, and the B Grade winner was Jim Johnston’s image Tree Dugouts.

Perpetual shields were presented to the members who amassed the most points in print and digital competitions for the year.

In A Grade, the Print shield was won by John Murphy and the Digital shield by Cheryl Murphy. In A/B Grade, the Print shield was

A Little Humour JOHN’S PARROT A young man named John received a parrot as a gift. The parrot had a bad attitude and an even worse vocabulary.

Every word out of the bird’s mouth was rude, obnoxious and laced with profanity.

John tried and tried to change the bird’s attitude by consistently saying only polite words, playing soft music and anything else he could think of to ‘clean up’ the bird’s vocabulary.

Finally, John was fed up and he yelled at the parrot. The parrot yelled back.

John shook the parrot and the parrot got angrier and even more rude. John, in desperation, threw up his hand, grabbed the bird and put him in the freezer.

For a few minutes the parrot squawked and kicked and screamed. Then suddenly there was total quiet. Not a peep was heard for over a minute. Fearing that he’d hurt the parrot, John quickly opened the door to the freezer.

The parrot calmly stepped out onto John’s outstretched arms and said “I believe I may have offended you with my rude language and actions. I’m sincerely remorseful for my inappropriate transgressions and I fully intend to do everything I can to correct my rude and unforgivable behaviour.”

John was stunned at the change in the bird’s attitude. As he was about to ask the parrot what had made such a dramatic change in his behavior, the bird spoke-up, very softly, “May I ask what the turkey did?”

SHORTS A Rainbow Beach man and his wife walked past a swanky new pizza restaurant.

“Did you smell that food?” she says. “It smells absolutely incredible!”

Being a kind-hearted gentleman he thought, “What the hell ...I’ll treat her!”

So they walked past it again.!

I was visiting my daughter last night when I asked if I could borrow a newspaper.

“This is the 21st century!” she said. “We don’t waste money on newspapers! Here, use my iPad.” I can tell you this….. that fly never knew what hit him.

We were listening to the radio this morning when the host invited the callers to reveal the nicknames they had for their wives.

The best call was from a brave chap who called his wife “Harvey Norman”.

The host asked “Why that name?”

He replied, “Absolutely no interest for 36 months.”

SCOTS’ CORNER The Scots have an infallible cure for sea-sickness. They lean over the side of the ship with a ten-pence coin in their teeth.

In some Scottish restaurants they heat the knives so you can’t use too much butter.

McTavish broke the habit of a lifetime and bought two tickets for a raffle. One of his tickets won a 1,000-pound prize.

He was asked how he felt about his big win. “Disappointed” said McTavish. “My other ticket didn’t win anything.”

McDougal walked into a fish and chip shop. “I want ten pence worth of chips, please. I want lots of salt and vinegar on them and two pence worth of pickled onions. And wrap the whole lot in today’s newspaper”.

You should be careful about

stereotyping the Scots as mean. There was a recent letter to a newspaper from an Aberdonian which said “If you print any more jokes about mean Scotsmen I shall stop borrowing your paper.”

Have you heard the rumour that the Grand Canyon was started by a Scotsman who lost a coin in a ditch?

After discovering that they had won 15 million pounds in the lottery, Mr and Mrs McFlannel sat down to discuss their future. Mrs McFlannel announced “After 20 years of washing other people’s stairs, I can throw my old scrubbing brush away at last.”

Her husband agreed - “Of course you can, hen. We can easily afford to buy you a new one now.”

Stay Safe this Christmas Season Well here we are again, another year bites the dust.

With all the distrac ons of the next month, even trying to organise a group photo was hard enough.

As the weather con nues to be hot and dry our thoughts go out to all those who have been affected by the bushfires and the ongoing drought.

Although even Dorothy MacKellar in her poem wrote:

This was wri�en in 1904 and it doesn’t seem too much has really changed!

When you do come in to shop at IGA, we have the drought appeal trolley or $2 dona on badges.

(actually it the first day of the test Australia v Pakistan) so my spor ng interest has turned the tables to summer sport. Although as usual the NRL just can’t seem to be kept out of the paper for generally all the wrong reasons.

I'm not one to watch much tennis but congratula ons must go out to Ash Barty for her season ending Number One status. It’s a pity some of her male counterparts can't show as much maturity as her.

I can’t see Daniel Riccardo doing too much in what's le� of this year, let alone next. Although stranger things have happened (look at Leicester winning the premier league) With so much happening in the next month or two, don't forget to remember all those that are close and dear to you and don’t forget to tell them.
