S 2021 THE YEAR that wins the ‘most popular’ award?

As the fireworks (whoops, that’s no fireworks) brings it in, I’ve decided on my New Year resolution. I’m practicing my gratitude. Heatley and I are back at the editor’s desk and we’d like to thank Lee McCarthy for recording our coast’s stories and history, as well as seeing the paper through and promoting our advertisers during an uncertain time of lockdown. In the meantime, Heatley and I have been in hibernation publishing books and our App with Camps Australia Wide our latest CAMPS 11 will be released this month! I’m SOOO grateful it’s done. Our kids have GROWN since my last Editor’s Note, and 2021 has our boys busy - one finishing uni at his first job as an engineer, one starting uni and our youngest beginning his senior schooling. Big news for the daughter, too - she has been accepted into the Australian Defence Force Academy and off to Canberra. Her

18th birthday was spent in Army basic training, and now she’s back in again for her 21st. Early celebrations have begun. So, I am particularly thankful for them all coming home to roost these holidays and scraping up any time I can with them. Which leads to a plea - it’s time to expand our team, so if you love crafting words or taking photos, please let me know. I’ve really enjoyed pulling this edition together for you. There is so much happening on our coast - the fishing comps, concerts, book clubs and lots of rocks on the beach to scramble over. My gym crew, my book club, my hubby, our beach, visitors to town keeping us all employed….I love walking down the main street (all prettied up - the street, that is) and locals saying hi - there sure is a lot to be grateful for when you live here. From our family to yours, we wish you a wonderful, gratitude-filled and healthy year ahead.

She said, “Getting there, we were expecting everything to be black and burnt. “I’m so excited to share; the main tourist attractions are as beautiful as ever! That’s thanks to many people’s hard work to reduce the fires, including Queensland Fire and Emergency Services. “We were some of the very first tourists allowed back on the island. It turned into a once-in-a-lifetime experience for us when we discovered we had the main attraction, Lake McKenzie, all to ourselves, for a few hours! “It was an unreal experience that felt on the same level of incredible as our wedding day or jumping off our overwater bungalow in Bora Bora. “So grateful this paradise is only three hours drive from our hometown Brisbane. If you get the chance to go to Fraser Island for

a romantic getaway, GO! “The sooner, the better - not only will you have an incredible experience, but you’ll also be supporting many hard-working people on the island after they’ve faced many challenging months.” Tourists returning to K’gari have been a great relief for Rainbow Beach resident Nigel Worthington, owner of Fraser Island Beach Houses. “It has cost us $70,000 and we’re only one small business on the island.” He also acknowledges the impact on his home town: “People stop here for fuel on their way over, and their way back, they stop for coffee, breakfast or lunch.” Something that Sharon Parker from Ed’s Beach Bakery can attest to, after spending 15 Christmases working the business. “The flow through to Fraser is our biggest money maker. We noticed an immediate drop off as soon as they shut down and a drop in sales. Yesterday’s low tide should

have been pumping, but today has had a slight increase in trade. “I’ve reckon they’ve gone somewhere else, as people were worried it wouldn’t be open in time for Christmas.” As Tourism and Events Queensland’s (TEQ) Good to Go campaign continues to roll out, we need to spread the word that Fraser Island’s big drawcards - Lake McKenzie, Central Station and the ancient rainforest of Pile Valley, Eli Creek and the Maheno Wreck are pristine - and waiting for you! The campaign aims to inspire interstate visitors to stay longer and spend more in Queensland. Nigel is also President of Rainbow Beach Commerce and Tourism, and shares that the recovery (with the exception of backpackers) after shutdown and prior to the K’gari fires and Inskip Point closures was “off the scale”. Nigel says, “After 18 years owning a

business on Fraser Island and 12 years in Rainbow Beach, I have never seen the level of activity and have not seen numbers like this since 2006/2007.” He reports it is an unprecedented level of activity, with the majority of people new to town. Other accommodation providers have also said we have not seen this happen here before. “Primarily it has been off the back of four-hour drive time. This is the maximum distance before air travel because airlines won’t get back into full force until borders are open,” he says. “We are in the Goldilocks zone. We have nature, fabulous beaches and lifestyle.” With the pandemic continuing to evolve and impact industries and communities, the Queensland Government is continuing to update its COVID-19 website to keep our tourism industry, its people and tourists informed and safe.

What’s new in Tin Can Bay?

Christmas Lights Pelicans, kangaroos, reindeer and thousands of little lights are making the Coast a little brighter, as Christmas cheer was on the agenda again this year for the Tin Can Bay Chamber of Commerce and Tourism Inc., with the Christmas town lighting going back up for the second year. A slight delay with Council approvals saw them go up just in the nick of time for the big day but they will remain in place for a few weeks in January to continue the joy!

Norman Point Speed Limit Safety for residents and visitors is a priority for the Chamber and a successful application to Council in 2019 saw the speed limit reduced in the Tin Can Bay Norman Point Parkland to 20km per hour. This is a great outcome and will also assist with road crossings for the new footpath that is part of the Cooloola Coast

Esplanade Revitalisation Project.

Business solutions The Chamber of Commerce and Industry Queensland works to make Queensland the best place in Australia for business. The TCB Chamber recently met with Relationships Manager Paul Garcia, to be inspired on how to be an effective and strong chamber. Management also met with the new Wide Bay Burnett Regional Stakeholder Manager, Tim Sayre, to see how his role can help members connect local issues with solutions. Progress will continue after new year on the skate park upgrade in Cooloola Cove to include a multi-use basketball half court, shade shelter, low wall seating and open skate bowl

T’S ALL COMING together nicely at the Billabong Park skate facility at Cooloola Cove. A multi-use basketball half court, shade shelter, low wall seating and open skate bowl make up the new fun zone at Cooloola Cove. Unfortunately the start of the works was significantly delayed due to Covid restrictions and the NSW lockdown, otherwise it was planned to be completed for Christmas. While the contractors are on break for the holiday period the area will be under surveillance. Work will recommence in the new year and proposed to be finished early February, weather pending. The project is a joint initiative of Gympie Regional Council and the Queensland Government’s $600 million Works 4 Qld program. Cr Jess Milne said, “Cooloola Cove is a family community. This facility will be a real asset to residents as it will fill the activities gap that currently exists in the eight-toteen age bracket. “The combination of the skate bowl and basketball half court will provide a space that will enable numerous activities to be conducted in.”

ORKS ON Stage 2 of the Rainbow Beach Our Towns – Streetscape Revitalisation project are very near completion, as the finishing touches are being added to close out the project. You may have seen the change in traffic signs at the end of the main street - there are no STOP signs at the Kirchner Avenue pedestrian crossing (between the shops and the headland). Instead, GIVE WAY signs were installed at the T intersection on Rainbow Beach Road, near The Deck at Sea Salt. Last month, the team were busy completing the new central crossing area, upgrading the Kirchner Avenue intersection and foreshore footpath, and

widening the footpath at the Clarkson Drive corner. Crews were busy installing the new eyecatching rainbow themed street furniture, seats, bins and bike racks, and finishing off the landscaping, laying turf, installing irrigation and planting and mulching the new gardens. The Rainbow Beach Our Towns – Streetscape Revitalisation project is an initiative of the Queensland Government under the Works for Queensland Program, with $1M secured to deliver improvements across the two stages of the project. Painting and Art Stars at the Gallery

If you are looking for something for the kids to do during the school holidays, sign them up to one of the great activities the Gympie Regional Gallery has on offer. The Painting Club on January 13 and 15 from 10am 1pm aims to nurture the artistic development of children aged eight years and over, by providing an enriching art experience that will give children confidence to explore their own authentic art. The sessions are guided by local artist Cathy Condon who has been an experienced artist and educator for over 20 years. Art Stars also provides an valuable art experience and is designed for tweens aged 5-10 years and is again facilitated by Cathy Condon.

Become a Lifesaver!

You’ll have fun training to be a lifesaver with your peers - and join a great bunch of people, from all walks of life and all ages who volunteer to keep us all safe on our beach

OME AND JOIN a Bronze/SRC camp during the school holidays. The aim of these courses is to provide an intensive, structured, and fun training program for those interested in becoming an active member within the Rainbow Beach Surf Life Saving Club. Participants will gain surf life saving and nationally recognised awards and allow them to become part of a valued community organisation. An intensive ‘live in’ camp will be held from January 9-17. This includes: new electronic training manual, full patrol uniform, patrol cap, club togs, hi-vis safety rash shirt and graduation dinner plus all your food and accommodation for the week - for only $325. If you would like to do the Bronze award externally, your online theory can be completed in your own time and we will run some practical sessions for you on the first two weekends of January (2/3 and 9/10). You will also be able to join in on some camp sessions if you wish. This fee does not include club membership - $150. All Bronze camp assessments will be on January 16 or 17, depending on conditions. A final dinner is being held at the RBSLSC Supporters Club on Saturday night where parents/family are welcome to attend.

If performing rescues in the surf is not for you - there are still many ways you can assist Rainbow Beach Surf Club. Volunteers are always welcomed in many roles, there is even a way you can join a patrol…. If anyone would like to obtain their Observers Award, you can attend the induction session on either January 2 or with the camp on January 9 and if confident can be assessed the same day. It includes surf awareness and skills: identifying

rips, different types of waves, patient recognition, communication: signals and beach management. The course supplements first aid and advanced resuscitation techniques. Please note that all training is subject to Covid-19 restrictions and regulations and is subject to change at any time prior or during the course. Just seeing the Rainbow Beach Family Fishing Classic on this year, brought smiles to competitors - even though there were no beanies, scarves or fireside chats. The Rainbow Beach Family Fishing Classic and Expo and the Sports Club would like to thank the community, volunteers, Sports Club team, sponsors and competitors for this year’s most extraordinary fishing competition. Australia’s Best Shark and Ray dive’ One of the designs by 2020 Fashion Graduate Isabelle Cull from her collection Reverie

SABELLE CULL has recently been recognised for her 2020 Graduate Fashion Collection with a piece from the collection set to be displayed at Indooroopilly Shopping Centre during January 2021. The daughter of well known Gympie and Rainbow Beach couple Mark and Mary Cull, from Channon and Lawrence Dental, Isabelle has just completed her four year Bachelor of Fashion Design (Honours) degree at the Queensland University of Technology. She said “Rainbow Beach was a haven for me during the unsettling time of Covid-19 when universities went online. I escaped the city, coming back to my home region and the peacefulness of the beach environment. “Luckily though QUT re-opened and I was able to head back into the studio to finish designing and creating my collection, Reverie. “Reverie, defined in relation to my collection, means; to daydream, to be lost in thought. The idea of escaping reality into a dreamscape inspired by my childhood home of open fields often sprinkled with wildflowers was the initial inspiration for this collection. “This concept was realised through light-hearted feminine pieces which explored traditional techniques such as quilting and hand-painting to create slow, refined and meaningful commercial looks.” Isabelle aims to work for an Australian label so she can learn how to successfully build a brand and create effective designs and hopes to one day launch her own label. ITH THE demise of so many newspapers across the country last year due to Covid, did it make you appreciate your local paper? Being independently owned, means that we did have more control over this publication. It also helped that as a Dad-andMum style business, we offer parochial, original stories and images that you just can’t read anywhere else! Why? Because we and our community create it! All the wonderful community groups who contribute, to the advertisers who know how well we get their message out and the readers. Especially the locals who love having their photo taken! Thank you - you know who you are! People overwhelmingly view a printed copy of their newspaper as an essential service for their community, according to the Country Press Association national survey of local newspaper audiences. I know this is partly why even though their own business took massive hits during lockdown, they continued to advertise with us. Council too, played a role, promoting businesses in local publications. The survey showed there is continued strong demand (and passion) for the printed product in rural and regional Australia. Audiences indicate a preference for accessing news from their local masthead in print and they would prefer to read a digital news site that has the look and layout of a printed newspaper. In general, audiences indicate they are five times as likely to go directly to a local news website for their local news than Google or Facebook, and almost 10 times as likely to go to the local newspaper website over a local council website for their local news and information. In particular, our trades and services section continues to flourish, and we aim to support any advertising with stories and social media. So if you aren’t yet an advertiser - now is a great time to ask Heatley for expert advice on your marketing strategy to make your ads really work for you. If you love to write and take photos, or have an idea for a story, we’d also like to hear from you - because it is a big job putting each edition together, and we do need some help so join our team. OW IN ITS fourth month, Captain’s on Carlo is thriving with locals and tourists excited that once again Carlo Point has a venue to enjoy great food, good wine and stunning sunsets. Alison Little is the owner and this pocket rocket is fulfilling a two-year dream of running a takeaway and bistro at Carlo Point and living in Rainbow Beach. While the seven-day business has been BYO, it is now licenced with an inside dining area and a deck and offering a bistro, as well as takeaway. With only fresh Australian seafood and local whenever possible, Alison has a standard she maintains with loyal staff and repeat customers, and insists on the best and freshest products. Alison said: “I am from Coolum Beach and I camped regularly at the caravan park at Carlo Point and saw this amazing location and what it had the potential to be. “It was vacant for over 18 months and I felt someone had to give it a revamp and bring this beauty back to life so I thought - pick me! “This has been a dream of mine to live here in Rainbow Beach, one of the most beautiful places in the world. “Once I saw it was vacant, I created it in my head and decided to take the leap with the family’s support and while it has had a few challenges, we have loved the support and it is full steam ahead. “While it was not ‘convenient’ with three teenage children and two businesses back on the Sunshine Coast, I have been lucky that the family are all extremely supportive and proud of what we are creating here. “My husband Jud has a plumbing business with second born Jacob, a second year apprentice, Byron our first born is at university doing his paramedic degree and our baby, Aria, is at high school.” Alison is currently living between the business at Rainbow Beach and the family home in Coolum Beach. “It is tough being away from the family, but if COVID showed me anything, it is that life is given to fulfill your dreams as who knows what is around the corner and, as my husband Jud keeps telling me, ‘enjoy the ride’. “I think COVID has challenged people’s thoughts of what is important, with family and time together in a beautiful

ELL IT HAS been a mixed bag for 2020. We were closed down for some time and dolphin volunteers continued to look after the dolphins. It was pleasing to reopen to the public after lock down. If you had been watching our Facebook page or website during lockdown, you would have been kept up to date with ‘Mystique’s’ antics. He continues to clean up Snapper Creek and even ‘Patch’ is starting to get in on the act. Crowds have been consistent over the last few months and the Christmas/New Year period is very busy. We appreciated visitors cooperation with Covid rules, however we will not relax as the virus is quite resilient and could resurface. It was great to see little children holding out their hands to be sanitised on entry. Congrats to those parents who instilled the important message to them. Hope you all had a lovely Christmas and caught up with friends and family. We are all hoping for a Covidfree 2021. A big thank you to the dolphin volunteers for their dedication and extra hours during 2020. See you at the Centre!

If you’re a knight in shining armour or a mere pawn, you’ll be welcomed by eager and varied opponents to test your skills and while you’re at it, you’ll be making new friends. And while chess is happening in the social area, the rest of the Shed will be buzzing with wood turning classes, individuals completing their own projects, community projects being undertaken and impromptu conversations popping up here and there. It’s a great community of like-minded men and women getting together to use and enjoy Shed facilities as they pursue their hobbies and learn new skills in a supportive and happy environment. With ‘The Shed’s’ main focus being the promotion and improvement of Men’s mental health and physical wellbeing, it is also focused on providing facilities and services to the community at large, with an emphasis on social activities. Phoebe Jay’s performances have varied in styles as well as dimension, however her main style is all about country. Phoebe has loved every aspect of the many country music festivals, musters and gigs that she is involved in, winning Overall Open and Junior many times this year at country music festivals, never missing the chance to sing country music to a crowd. Whether it’s singing on the main stage or busking at the local markets down the street, it’s all about enjoying singing country music. Inspired by Dolly Parton, her voice is often described as a ‘Mini’ Dolly.

Phoebe Jay will be performing at the Tin Can Bay Country Club on Saturday, January 2 from 7pm and the club would love to see a full house! This rising star is a young country music singer/songwriter, originally from Townsville and now living around the cane-fields of Bundaberg. Rural Aid teamed up with Phoebe Jay who they describe as one of Australia’s youngest country music prodigies, to help bring Suicide Awareness to the forefront by commissioning a new song, Free Air performed in association with the legendary Tommy Emmanuel.

However it is abundantly clear that without the willing support of so many organisations and individuals it would not have been so successful. The stage backdrop was discovered by Kevin Reibel, cleaned and prepared and then erected on that morning with the help of sundry members of the Men’s and Community Shed, Tin Can Bay. Creative Arts Gympie Region supported and arranged insurance for the event. We are ready and willing to get back to normal in the Vets’ and Community Hall Cooloola Cove, providing Covid-19 quietly disappears, and with it the myriad cleaning processes, etc. We shall look forward to a happier, more productive and musical 2021, with smiles and singers unafraid to open their mouths for fear of passing on infections and the like. Don’t drink and dive...

HEY SAY A picture can be worth a thousand words, and this photo from last year is no exception. There are numerous metaphors that could be drawn from the photo about someone’s world being ‘turned upside down’ (which, let’s be honest, is something we can all relate to with respect to 2020...!) Where the metaphor starts to break down is when it comes to the causes of our respective turmoil: for most of us, the trauma of 2020 was something well beyond our control - as opposed to the above rollover, which can be attributed to alcohol-induced ‘pilot error’. If only there was a way of putting drivers like this into some sort of ‘quarantine’ - because this sort of behaviour killed way more people than COVID last year. Think about the efforts we’ve all gone to in containing coronavirus - yet the far deadlier pandemic of road trauma keeps spreading (and yet is equally something we can all help to prevent). Interestingly, one thing you can’t see in the photo is any vehicle tracks leading into the water (which may have provided the telltale signs of hooning prior to the crash). In this case, the rise and fall of the tide has erased any evidence of the events leading up to the crash - events which are probably best left in the past anyway. Perhaps the tidal erosion of these tracks can provide another point of reflection as we begin 2021 - and leave 2020 behind us. Here’s to a happy, safe and contemplative new year. HE SUMMER SCHOOL holidays are in full swing, and what better way to entertain your kids than getting out on the water. It is unfortunately a time where accidents and rescues peak for us, and almost all of these incidents are preventable. Children, especially, need close supervision in boats. Boating and Fisheries patrol officers, along with Water Police are likely to be about checking registrations, safety equipment, licences, alcohol consumption as well as fishing regulations. Check your equipment thoroughly to ensure it will pass any test. If you are unsure what you need for the area you are operating in, the regulations are online, or you can call into the base at Tin Can Bay and get a free copy of the Queensland Recreational Boating and Fishing Guide, released in October 2020. It is compulsory for all persons under 12 to wear a lifejacket in an open boat under

4.8 metres when underway, and for all persons on a personal watercraft or being towed on anything. Every year there are incidents such as drownings and severe injury where children are not properly supervised. It may be fun to sit on the bow while underway, but if you fall into the water, the chances of being struck by the propeller are very high. Now some good news. HE BUREAU of Meteorology has predicted wetter than average conditions this year due to the formation of La Niña in the tropical Pacific. Now is the time to prepare your household and community to protect what matters most. Step One – Make a plan The best way to ensure everyone knows what to do and where to go in an emergency is by keeping a Household Emergency Plan. Sit down with your family and make a list of important contacts like family and friends who live out of town, doctors, insurance providers, utility providers; emergency meeting places, and details on where you’d stay if you needed to evacuate quickly. Step Two – Pack supplies Keep a waterproof kit full of emergency supplies you’d need to last at least three days at home if you were isolated due to flooding. Include plenty of non-perishable food and water; a torch; battery-powered radio, toiletries including tissues and hand sanitiser; face masks; disinfectant wipes; spare batteries, gas cooker, medication, and board games to help pass the time.

NOTHER YEAR is coming to an end and what a challenging year it has been. Hopefully, 2021 will be a safer year for everyone, with the dreaded Covid heading for the hills. We finished off our year with 31 at our morning tea meeting and then followed by a lovely Christmas Lunch, at the Rainbow Beach Surf Club. We had past members, Theresa and Vaughn Skulthorp travelling from Hervey Bay to join us for some Christmas cheer.

This is all possible because of the active participation by our growing group of members across all age groups. Tin Can Bay Country Club help kids in need

HE TIN CAN BAY Country Club held their annual Christmas Toy Raffle to raise money for families who need a little help with gifts. The club purchased all the toys raffled and the day was a success raising nearly $4k. Community Action Inc. then provided a list of children’s names and details of what they might like for Christmas. The proceeds of the raffle bought presents for each child and treats to make their Christmas Day special. Community Action Inc. is a not-for-profit community organisation in Gympie who provide housing and support services for young people, women and children escaping domestic and family violence, as well as financial counselling and multicultural services. The Manager of TCBCC, Brad Robb and his wife Heather, had the pleasure of buying and wrapping all the presents so they could be handed over to the registered charity well before Christmas. They would really like to thank all the people who helped them shop at Gympie Central, Sharyn McCombe, the lovely lady at Priceline Pharmacy, the young girl at Surf Dive & Ski, the staff in Big W and Woolies! Brad said, “A big big thank you to all the community of Tin Can Bay, Cooloola Cove and Rainbow Beach for supporting the raffles and to the wonderful staff and committee at the Club for their hard work and dedication. “2020 has not been a good year for anyone, but knowing we live in a community that will still work together and help those in need is very humbling!” he said. “It is just so special to think of all those faces that have been through so much, had a smile and some joy on Christmas Day.”

AINBOW BEACH DroughtRunners are now in our sixth year of looking after the welfare of many farming families, whether it’s in drought, fire or helping those fallen on hard times.. Like all businesses, Covid shut us down as we couldn’t travel any distance for months to deliver goods, but we relied on Australia Post to send out vouchers. The Kids Bush to the Beach was going to happen again with Schools from the Warwick area but that had to be cancelled way back in March due to Covid. The year has ended well with another two ute and trailer loads of goods including Christmas presents to the School of Distant Ed in Longreach, that was distributed to those families still in drought. Another $7000 in Visa and IGA vouchers also went out to Centa Care (Mental Health). Also another $2000 this month has gone to the hard working Fencing For Fires Group who, like Blaze Aid, still have hundreds of KMS to renew since the January fires in Victoria and New South Wales. Our year of voucher and cash donations so far comes to over $35,000 and with no admin or overhead costs

it all gets directly to the beneficiary. Plus all the food hampers, so we have a lot of people to thank this month. We must thank Jim and Margaret Snee, along with Marlene Owen and Bruce Devereaux for delivering this month to Longreach (21 trips there for me was enough for a while). Thank you to Nestle Australia, The Reibel Family of TCBay for so many prawns, and Bill Neil for his wonderfully crafted wooden toys. Also Gympie Big W and Rainbow Beach Pharmacy for present collections, Good Price Pharmacy, and Bernard Petroleum. Presents from Bill and Patty Watts, Christine Crowe,Wal and Betty Freeman, Bev Yeoman, Merry Rigby and Adele Tauri. We have just had another big donation from M Watts, also W Bailey, HT Stewart, G Eats, T Linke and J Anderson all from Victoria. Many thanks again to Wayne Kerle for his bottle and can collection which he processes at Bay Auto TCBay. To all that donated in our IGA trolleys in Rainbow, Tin Can Bay and Drakes Gympie, along with all that donated to collection tins a big thankyou. We will leave our tins out - hopefully over summer, rains will break the drought…

Tin Can Bay School News Tin Can Bay School Choir

Our awesome Tin Can Bay School Choir has been working hard this year and, recently, were able to perform at some events at school and in the community. The students sang beautifully at our Remembrance Assembly, Awards Assemblies and our Christmas Assembly, with some of our young students performing solos for the first time! Students also loved being able to share their songs with the local community, travelling to the Cooloola Waters Retirement Resort where we had a fun morning performing a range of songs for the residents, including a sing-a-long. Thank you for the delicious morning tea and chocolates! We wish to thank Generation Gap and Cooloola Waters Retirement Resort, two of our wonderful local community groups for their support in donating to our choir. These funds enabled us to travel to venues to perform and share our love of singing.

at Tin Can Bay P-10 State School. As the Chaplain in the school, I’m there as a listening ear for those students who may be feeling a little overwhelmed with all that is going on around them. Throughout this year I have been busy with a range of programs and student supports, including Lunchtime Connect, Garden Club, Breakfast Club, and accompanying students on camps and excursions. Lunchtime Connect is held during lunch breaks and is a time when students can come to play games, do crafts, play ping pong or just chill with their friends. Monday mornings, myself along with Mrs Turner, run Garden Club in the school kitchen garden. Students enjoy planting seeds, watching them grow, looking after the plants, then harvesting and getting to try their produce. The lovely liquorice flavour of fennel is now a firm favourite! Breakfast Club ran on Tuesday and Thursday mornings for all students who wanted to come and was a great success. This program could only have happened with the generous donations and fantastic support from local businesses and volunteers. I would like to take this opportunity

A word from your Principal Steve Bennett While the final curtain closes on 2020 and we find ourselves in the middle of the summer holidays, I hope that all of our wider school community have been able to take a break, rejuvenate and spend some quality time with friends and family. There were many occasions throughout 2020 that school life seemed to be happening at a frenetic pace and the challenges of COVID were ever present. Despite these challenges, great things happened. As we look forward to 2021 we will be building on the great work of past years and continue to improve the quality of education for every child at Rainbow Beach State School. To our graduating Year 6 students, I would like to congratulate each of them on their achievements and wish them every success in the future. We are all very proud of the fine young men and women they have become, they are a credit to their families and themselves. We are excited to be planning and preparing to see our new and returning students join us for 2021. Our vision for 2021 and beyond is not only “Reach for a Rainbow” but for all of us to strive to reach higher, see further and shine brighter!

Coloured Sands Starting below the lookout, walk along the beach towards Double Island Point for a kilometre or so to these amazing coloured sand cliffs, with the best colours around 9 to 10 kilometres along the beach (accessible with a 4wd or Surf and Sand Safari tour) 5486 3131. Carlo Sand Blow A bush walk up to Carlo Sand Blow is a must for every visitor. Drive to the reservoir at the top of Cooloola Drive. The Blow is an easy 600m walk from the car park or take the longer walk from the National Parks Office. Spectacular views of the Coloured Sands, Double Island Point and Tin Can Bay Inlet are the bonus for your efforts. When the thermals are right, you will often see hang gliders taking off and landing at this beautiful piece of nature’s sculpture. Lake Poona After morning tea or lunch in the picnic area you can venture on some wonderful walks to Lake Poona or through some spectacular rainforest. Allow 40 minutes to reach Lake Poona. Lake Freshwater Only accessible by 4WD, tour or walking. Walking tracks starts at the Bymien picnic area. The round trip from Rainbow Beach will take a full day and requires fitness. Foreshore Tin Can Bay You can walk 4km from Crab Creek to Norman Point, over picturesque bridges, signage of flora and fauna, through mangroves, playgrounds and outdoor gyms. It is mostly flat – very safe for children on wheels. Start at the playground opposite the library, cycle to Crab Creek and stop for a coffee, then return to opposite the library. Enjoy the views out to the inlet while the kids enjoy the playground and skatepark. Rainbow Beach 10,000 steps walk – from the headland behind the surf tower and playground to Carlo Road. Paths are perfect for bicycles, scooters and skateboards.

Flying Fifteen State Championships in Tin Can Bay T

HE TIN CAN BAY Yacht Club hosted the Flying Fifteen State Championships (FFIQ) State Championships in near perfect conditions with blue skies, warm temperatures and a moderate northeasterly sea-breeze. Crews were tested with the tidal stream and the vagaries of the estuary. A total of 14 boats competed with crews coming from Darwin, Lake Macquarie, Brisbane and seven local boats. Greg and Laurie Williamson looked like cleaning up with three first places on the cards, but the current and past National Champions, Ashley Smith on Sake and Chris Villa on Up Ship Creek dominated the final two races. After five races only two points separated the top three positions, with Chris Villa and

Graham and Di Lee on Free to Air won the Handicap series. Christmas has come early for the Yacht Club. Last month a 10 kW solar system was installed with thanks to the committee, grants officer Peter Hogg and Ken Bubb for their hard work in making this happen. The launching ramp has been refurbished and the grassed area is recovering well. The dining area has new tables and chairs, all in time for the Christmas celebrations. The club was ‘spruced up’ for the new year and everyone is looking forward to normal sailing again.

HE LOCAL RAINBOW Beach Cricket team and the Gympie Royals will play in the Lionel McBride Memorial Cricket Match at the Carlo Road Oval at Rainbow on the Saturday January 16, 2021. The match will be the second day of the Gympie Regional Cricket Association Reserve Grade two day fixture and will be played in memory of their scorer Lionel who sadly passed away on Australia Day 2018. Lionel’s wife Edith still resides in Rainbow and their children and grandchildren will travel up from Brisbane for the event. The family are touched by the respect the boys have shown Lionel in remembering

him with this yearly event, and will present the Lionel McBride Memorial Trophy to the best and fairest play of the match on the day. Kick off is 12.30pm on the day and the family invite local residents to come down to cheer on the Rainbow boys. A huge thank you once again to Rainbow Beach Meats and the Rainbow Beach Sports, Recreation and Memorial Club for their sponsorship. Thanks also to Matthew Conaghan (Matto) from the Rainbow team who has assisted the family in organising the event this year.

HAT A MONTH it has been at the Tin Can Bay Country Club! Competition fields have been great, the weather has been kind and now with the long-awaited rain, we should see the course in pristine condition over the summer break and into the new year. If anybody is looking to book themselves or their social group in for a game over summer this can be done by phoning the Country Club on 5486 4231.

ITH THE WINDING down of 2020, the Golf Club has held the Annual Presentation of trophies for Ladies and Men. The Ladies Champion for 2020 was once again Lyn Wong. This is her 22nd time as champion since 1996 and she still has a very competitive outlook in her golf game. Richard Buczynsky is once again the Men’s 2020 Champion, having held that position for seven out of the past eight years. Our weekly club competitions are all open to members and visitors with Golf Australia Handicaps. If you are staying in Rainbow Beach or surrounding area and would like to take your frustrations out playing golf, either enquire in person at the Pro Shop or ring 0409 727 577 to be entered on the time sheets. Our resident professional, James Taylor, can help you with all your golfing needs such as balls, tees, bags, towels, clothing, shoes or anything you need, and to brush up on your skills, book a lesson with James. With a few weeks remaining of school holidays, bring the whole family for a social game of golf. Motorised carts are available for hire from the Pro Shop. Our Club would like to wish everyone a happy and healthy new year.

We have undergone a competition restructure which will allow social players to get on the course before 8am or after 2pm most Saturdays, whilst giving members and visitors more options when booking in for their preferred tee time. Last month we held a Callaway Club Fitting Day which saw our company representative, Cameron Smyth, travel out to Tin Can Bay to provide a service for our members. The day ran extremely well with many members booking in for a club fit. I’d like to thank the members who helped make the day a success. I will be looking into holding similar events in the future.

The Ladies Golf Champion for 2020 was once again Lyn Wong who has won the championship for the 22nd time since 1996

HRISTMAS CELEBRATIONS for 2020 were shared with the Yachties at the TCB Yacht Club in December. It was a great night of fun and camaraderie as members entered into the theme of ‘Heads and Tails’ with fancy dress. The opportunity was taken to use the night to present Dragon Club member Jan Low, with her Life Membership Award. Not only does Jan continue as an active paddler since 2004, she is part of the Dragons Lair Cafe Committee, coordinates raffles for our regattas, and she also is in charge of ordering and distribution of Club uniforms. Well done Jan!

Now onwards and upwards into 2021! Cooloola Dragons are taking a “break” over New Year and will be back into training Thursday afternoons and Sunday mornings after January 10. Permission has been given by Dragon Boat Queensland for the regattas/racing to recommence post Covid-19 restrictions. We have our sights set on the Wide Bay Series which commences at 1770 in May, so serious training will be happening. I EVERYONE. Firstly, I hope you all had a great Christmas and New Year. As I’m writing this we are in the middle of some rough weather and huge swells which has put a stop to any trips for a couple of weeks now, up until now though it’s been pretty good and the fishing has been very productive with mixed bags of all species. Mahi-mahi have been around along with Cobia which is providing some nice sports

action. We have been catching plenty of quality Pearl Perch with quite a few specimens between the 3-4 kilo range and a few pushing over. Parrot, sweetlip, cod, Moses Perch, snapper and the odd Red Emperor have been making up the majority of catches. In the straits, Jacks seem to be hitand-miss but when on they are in good numbers, with reports of plenty getting smoked by these aggressive predators. Well, now we just have to wait for this weather to settle again and get back into it. ‘Til next month, enjoy the holidays!

ECEMBER AND JANUARY mean one thing to us at Gardiner Fisheries – It is Mangrove Jack time. Considered one of the most elusive sport fish, we are privileged to have an always angry population of Mangrove Jack in our waters. Being an ambush predator, Mangrove Jack give little warning of their impending strike. When they hit it is game on. Lock up your drag and hold on! For the bait fishos, nothing beats live baits. Live herring, whiting and flicker mullet are lollipops to the Jacks. Large strip baits like mullet and bonito as well as whole pilchards will also bring them on the chew. Lure choices vary depending on the amount of structure. We recommend surface lures along with lightly weighted soft plastics. Weedless rigs will reduce

those snaggy hook ups in the mangroves. A lighter line class of around 20-30lb may result in higher strike rates but unless you are ready for the strike, you’ll likely get smoked in the snags. Lifting line class to 40-50lb gives you a fighting chance. We recommend fluorocarbon leader of about 120cm in length and between 60 – 80lb. Overkill??? A large school of golden trevally was seen in the bay recently, but weren’t interested in taking a lure at the time, but fishing for them at dawn and dusk could prove productive for a bit of fun. Borumba Dam could be an option for fishing, as good numbers and quality of bass have been caught recently on bait and lures and there is a good chance of a saratoga. The water police have been out lately drug and alcohol testing and checking safety gear in an effort to keep us all incident-free on the water. With the largely increased holiday boating traffic on the water, we all need to take a little more notice of what others are doing on the water and at the boat launching sites, as some may have little experience in boating activities.

Various shark species seem to be ever present on the reefy areas and can be a bit of a problem. One species that is occasionally caught is the Leopard Shark which is well worthy of a photo with its colourful spotted skin, before it is released to harass the next fisherman. There should soon be some Spanish Mackerel coming into the bay and it may be worth trolling various larger lures around the Inskip and Bluff areas to entice a strike.

A Little Humour CRIMINAL RECORD A British man is visiting Australia. The customs agent asks him, “Do you have a criminal record?” The British man replies, “I didn’t think you needed one to get into Australia anymore.” KIWI CRACKER An Aussie bloke is having a quiet drink in a bar and leans over to the big guy next to him and says, “Do you wanna hear a Kiwi joke?” The big guy replies, “Well mate, before you tell that joke, you should know something. I’m 1.90m tall, 125 kg and I played as a forward for the All Blacks. The guy next to me is 1.85m, weighs 115 kg and he’s an ex-All Black lock. Next to him is a bloke who’s 2m tall, weighs 120 kg and he’s a current All Black second rower.Now do you still want to tell that Kiwi joke?” The Aussie bloke says, “Nah, not if I’m going to have to explain it three times.” BAR JOKE An American, a Brit, a Canadian, a Dane, an Ethiopian, a Frenchman, a Greek, a Haitian, an Irishman, a Jew, a Kiwi, a Lithuanian, a Mongolian, a Nigerian, an Omani, a Peruvian, a Qatari, a Roman, a Scotsman, a Uruguayan, a Venezuelan, a Western Saharan, a xenophobe and a Zimbabwean walk into a bar. The bartender says,”Im sorry, but you can’t come in here without a Thai.” IRISH GIGGLES An Irishman goes to the doctor who, after examining him, says: “You have some problems with your heart, but if you take these tablets, I think it will be okay.” So the doctor gives the man the tablets and the patient asks: “Do I have to take them every day?” No,” replies the doctor, “take one on the

When he finishes them, he comes back to the bar and orders three more. The bartender asks him, “You know, a pint goes flat after I draw it; it would taste better if you bought one at a time.” The Irishman replies, “Well, you see, I have two brothers. One is in America, the other in Australia, and I’m here in Dublin. When we all left home, we promised that we’d drink this way to remember the days when we drank together.” The bartender admits that this is a nice custom, and leaves it there. The Irishman becomes a regular in the bar, and always drinks the same way: ordering three pints and drinking them in turn. One day, he comes in and orders two pints. All the other regulars notice and fall silent. When he comes back to the bar for the second round, the bartender says, “I don’t want to intrude on your grief, but I wanted to offer my condolences on your great loss.” The Irishman looks confused for a moment, then a light dawns in his eye and he laughs. “Oh, no,” he says, “everyone’s fine. I’ve just quit drinking.”

IRISH SHORTS Paddy went to the doctors today. and said “Do you treat alcoholics?” The doctor replied, “Of course we do.” Paddy said, “Great get your coat on, I’m skint.” Barman says to Paddy “Your glass is empty, fancy another one?” Looking puzzled, Paddy says, “Why now would I be needing two empty feckin glasses?” Paddy says to Mary, “If you were stranded on a desert island, who would you like most to be with you?” “My Uncle Mick,” replies Paddy. “What’s so special about him?” asks Mary. “He’s got a boat,” says Paddy. “Young man,” said the judge, looking sternly at the defendant.“It’s alcohol and alcohol alone that’s responsible for your present sorry state!” “I’m glad to hear you say that,” replied Murphy, with a sigh of relief. ”Everybody else says it’s all my fault!” Paddy drags a huge box to the Antiques Roadshow in Dublin. ‘Where did you get this?’ asks the expert. “It’s been in my loft for 40 years, to be sure,” replies Paddy, ‘and I tink it must be some kind of a family heirloom.’ “‘I see,” says the expert. ‘Tell me, do you have insurance?’‘ “No,” replies Paddy, “do yus think I shud?” “Yeah,” replies the expert, “it’s your water tank.” PEARLY GATES Three men die in a car accident on Christmas Eve. They all find themselves at the Pearly Gates waiting to enter heaven. On entering they must present something relating to or associated

with Christmas. The first man searches his pocket, and finds some mistletoe, so he is allowed in. The second man presents a cracker, so he is also allowed in. The third man pulls out a pair of stockings. Confused at this last gesture, St Peter asks, ‘How do these represent Christmas?’ Answer: ‘They’re Carol’s.’ BLABBERMOUTH John and Jessica were on their way home from the bar one night and John got pulled over by the police. The officer told John that he was stopped because his tail light was burned out. John said, “I’m very sorry officer, I didn’t realise it was out, I’ll get it fixed right away.” Just then Jessica said, “I knew this would happen when I told you two days ago to get that light fixed.” So the officer asked for John’s license and after looking at it said, “Sir your license has expired.” And again John apologised and mentioned that he didn’t realise that it had expired and would take care of it first thing in the morning. Jessica said, “I told you a week ago that the state sent you a letter telling you that your license had expired.” Well by this time, John is a bit upset with his wife contradicting him in front of the officer, and he said in a rather loud voice, “Jessica, shut your mouth!” The officer then leaned over toward Jessica and asked. “Does your husband always talk to you like that?” Jessica replied, “Only when he’s drunk.”

Hello, and welcome to another edi on of your IGA monthly rant. What a spectacular month it has been. Since we have had the required 100mm of rain, hopefully fires will be allowed for camping soon? Or are we suffering from another government department stuff up? Nothing new but. Beau ful beach, great fishing, gateway to Fraser Island and many more a�rac ons. How good is it to live in Rainbow Beach? Really, how good is it? Once you see the other side of life (Murgon), you appreciate this place a li�le more. Well, that is if you are not a small business owner. When we s ll have “Covid” camping restric ons at Teewah and Inskip Point, and the closure of Fraser Island for a fire that had already been burning for several weeks. It makes you wonder if the government is trying to control all of us. It makes you feel like we are being looked down on like thousands of li�le ants and we are ge�ng trampled all over. Remember, I am by far a conspiracy theorist, but a one government for all? Hopefully, the town bustles with tourists over the next couple of weeks to make up for a hit-and-big-miss year. Are we soon going to learn that Covid is going nowhere and we must learn to live with it? Good excuse to manipulate us? Might have the interna onal borders lockdown for another, I do not know, 10 or so years? Fingers crossed our NSW neighbours will be able to travel interstate. The main street beau fica on is really coming along. I hope our mayor is right when he said it would be completed before the holidays. Luckily we are unsure whether it was school holidays or the Christmas break. They either like to cut it fine, or only two weeks overdue is like finishing on me for a council job. Enough ran ng from me, the important talk. Sports Report I am certainly glad cricket has started. There is always that period where there is not much sport on. It is the same me every year. As I write this, the first day of the Tests against India is over. Australia is looking good but we are yet to bat. The loss of Warner with both his bat and ball tampering skills will be vitally missed. Other than Smith and Marnus Labuschagne, there does not seem to be too much depth in the ba�ng department. A�er Joe Burns’ proven record in how to be best dismissed, I thought they would have given a debut. I guess we will find out a�er today’s play. Cameron Green looks right at home. Hopefully, someone for the future. We need to always be looking to improve our team.

A-League starts in a few days. All that I can say at the moment is, go the Roar. Hopefully, be�er than last year. As we round up one year, we start another. I wish the best for all and hope Santa brought you what you wanted. You stay true to your New Year resolu on and have a bright and prosperous year.
