Editor’s Note

What are your plans for 2019? I

F YOU ARE looking for resolutions - we have some ideas to reduce landfill and save some cash. Look to the Health, Fitness, Beauty and Wellbeing pages for new exercise ideas and ways to feed your soul. I look back on the last month, and feel utterly content with where I live. I can walk to a superb gym and pool (read about all BJ has to offer at the Aquatic Centre). A bit further there are clubs and eateries - (the newest one is in this issue) and then there are all the wonderful community groups, like the surf club. Table tennis gives me the remote control back, one night each week. I’ve been treated with artists who perform internationally, right here in Rainbow Beach. Both the Country at the Beach and Festival of Small Halls were heartwarming events where community-connectivity shined. Jess Milne also reported community togetherness at the Carols at Cooloola Cove, and the Tin Can Bay Christmas

Carnival - they are continuing until January 6, so go and support local groups and have some fun. Thanks to everyone who organised carols across the coast. There’s also a movie night, a vintage fair, Australia Day and oodles of kids’ activities, inside these pages. I haven’t even mentioned the beauty of our natural environment - our beaches and waterways. They are a definite drawcard for all of you tourists stopping by. Make sure you see the sandblow, and read up - the Camera Club teaches us how to take a brilliant photo in that very spot. To all our Year 6, well done. Year 12 graduates, our congratulations - 2019 will be an exciting year ahead for you all. Write down this resolution (hint, hint): Phone your mother! Until next month, Michelle Gilmore

PS Happy New Year!

Who else knew that Council wants a six-storey high development on the old T

golf course?

HE PROPOSED 39 residential block Wyvern Road subdivision (on the old Rainbow Shores Golf Course) is “in conflict” with the Gympie Regional Council Planning Scheme. Planning officers report it is designated as a “Tourist Accommodation Zone”, and must therefore be “multiple units with a six storey limit”. The publicly available documents state that the developer will need to demonstrate how a low-density development will not jeopardise the “strategic outcomes for town”, including “tourism as a key economic driver”. After I got over the shock that Council would prefer an apartment tower to family homes, I wondered if anyone else knew about this, and if this applies to other parcels of land in Rainbow Beach or Tin Can Bay, where development is also stymied by bush and beach? Are our beautiful towns destined to be another Mooloolaba or Broadbeach? How much say do we have, as a community, to curb high rise developments, if the remediation between town and the Shores is ever completed? Andrew Hawkins from Rainbow Beach Realty is also perplexed, “The idea that the golf course could be redeveloped into six storey apartments in the current market, is at odds with what the Rainbow Beach community wants and needs. “Given my nine years of experience selling property in Rainbow Beach, there is a lack of affordable vacant land supply and permanent rentals in town. The demand for units is much lower, with units typically incurring a longer selling period.”

Andrew says the demographic of Rainbow Beach suits families - the demand is for houses: “It is not a sales cliché people still want a backyard for the kids and room for a boat. “I do not see how Gympie Council could reasonably expect a developer to get more apartments and try to sell them in the current market, let alone the impact they would have on already discounted unit stock within Rainbow Beach. “I do not usually make such public statements. In this case, I feel it is important that Rainbow Beach residents become aware of what the Council is proposing. “We are screaming out for homes for people to rent. We are losing local families as properties are changing hands and being used as a weekender or moved into the holiday rental pool. “These are not people who can fit into a two bedroom resort apartment. These are local families and critical contributors to our local economy. We need affordable housing to keep our locals local.” Documents do also state that “while Council is not opposed to the investigation of alternative residential living choices on the site, as it stands, the Planning Scheme does not facilitate the proposed development”. The subdivision is the town’s first land release for years. Yes, we do need planning to be perfect to protect our environment and the future homeowners. Every delay or cost incurred in this process will make the land less affordable for families. Perhaps the review not only needs to be made on the development proposal, but also the Planning Scheme?

Cooloola Cove Community Christmas was a Cracker! Jess Milne

T

HEY SAY RAIN can ruin an event however the H2O injection created messy old fashioned fun for the kids at the first Cooloola Cove Community Christmas and Carols. There’s nothing better than getting soaked in a jumping castle come water slide or by apple bobbing between showers. Attendees enjoyed the afternoon keeping dry on the veranda sipping tea, eating cake or chomping down on a sausage. Some tried their luck on the chocolate wheel or got creative at the craft table. The carols were led by Pastor Scott accompanied by ‘the Band’ and the CooloolaBay Choir even made an appearance. Santa had a sleigh issue but made it just in time to give out some Christmas cheer.

Everyone had a fantastic time and gave the inaugural event a double thumbs up! A big thank you goes to Gympie Regional Council for CAG funds for the jumping castle, Woolworths Cooloola who donated the apples, Cooloola Cove Residents and Friends for supplying the BBQ, Cooloola Cove Veteran and Community Hall for use of the facility, Cooloola Wesleyan Methodist Church for the awesome carols and YAP for the youth games and craft.

RENT’S BURGERS was a pipe dream of long-time locals, Brent and Alexandra Klekar, but a pipe dream has become a reality! This dynamic duo have leapt into new directions for 2019 with the eatery - after Brent has spent 15 years at sea as a Marine Engineer, and Alex has a graduate nursing position at Gympie Hospital, starting February. Brent realised a family-friendly business in Rainbow Beach would mean a lifestyle where he can be home more. Brent told us, “We have always loved

food and thought that we wanted to offer the town a different option in terms of dining, and a burger bar seemed like a fitting way to make this happen.” The burgers we tasted were delicious! Mine was filled with pork belly and coleslaw, and my family gave the thumbs up as well - two had the Peri Peri chicken and one devoured Brent’s Burger. I’m looking forward to trying the vego option, plus there’s also fish and chips, wings, cocktails and lots more burgers to try. Meanwhile, Alex is excited about her new direction for 2019. “I have enjoyed contributing to the community in my past role as a teacher, but have always had the

thought brewing that nursing is what I wanted to do with my life. “Life really is too short not to give things a go.” Said Brent, “I was born here, we are invested in this town and want to see the community thrive, Rainbow has been a fantastic place to live, work and raise our family and we feel pretty lucky to call it home.” You’ll find Brent’s Burgers at 8 Rainbow Beach Road, Rainbow Beach (where Coffee Rocks was, next to Epic Ocean Adventures). The kitchen is open weekdays 7am-9pm, weekends 6.30am-10pm, burgers from 10am, and the bar closes at midnight daily. Call 07 5486 8877 or drop in!

S I WRITE rain is falling in parts of the South West Queensland, but again only patchy storms. Longreach 30mm and Charleville 20 odd mm have fared best this will settle the dust and hopefully be the start of better times. Last month, three pallets of food items and Christmas presents were sent to the Longreach area to be shared around the district. Many thanks to the School of Distant Education for helping at such a busy time of year, and thank you Warren Werneckie for cartage. Our next load of three pallets and 50 x $100 prepaid Visa gift cards is now in Gympie, but departure is dependent on weather conditions. Many thanks to the Tramacchi and Owen families for taking this load. After 17 trips (45,000 kms) with Drought Runs I am lucky to have such great support. At least our organisation delivers 100% of donations to the struggling farmers and families in drought. A big thank you to Tin Can Bay CWA and Craft Group, Widgee Craft Group for there wonderful Christmas presents, Bill Neil, Tin Can Bay for his wonderful timber toys, Patti Watts, the collection points at Drakes and IGA Tin Can Bay and Rainbow. Also thanks to Ed’s Beach Bakery, Tin Can Bay Bakery, Snack Shack, Barnacles, and Gympie Bearings. To Bank of Queensland donors thank you for your generosity. And finally, to Rainbow Beach Transport and Cooloola Wholesalers Team who go out of their way to help - a big thank you all. Donations gratefully accepted. BOQ Gympie BSB: 124047 Account: 22599186

Festival of Small Halls a wonderful evening

T

HANK YOU, thank you Brooke Bignall, support act Rob Longstaff, and all the crew from the Festival of Small Halls tour. Despite the event falling on a weekday, in the busy lead up to Christmas - over 120 adults and bundle of children enjoyed a community-centred night, with unique music and home made food. The Rainbow Beach Hall played host to the festival, auspiced by the Rainbow Beach Commerce and Tourism. “Because the ticket price was dropped by $5 from last year we needed 150 adults to break even, hopefully the bar made up for that. I told Mark to consider it a Christmas gift to the community from RBCT!”

“Both Harry and Jeshua,” who tour with the performers, “congratulated me on the turn out, being a week night.” “I’d like to thank the community for coming out, and hope they enjoyed their evening. Thanks Boomerang Bag volunteers for their yummy dinner and desserts and all helpers! “The Small Halls team are keen to come back (for their days off in Paradise!) so here’s to next year!” If you missed out - they complete their performances in Australia at the Woodford Folk Festival.

December 7, 2019 is the first Saturday of summer, and I know I’ll be making sure I have tickets! “People were from Sydney, Brisbane and from out Roma way. One lady came straight from chemo,” Kroppy said. You can see why Travis Collins is a six times Golden Guitar Winner and back-toback CMC Male Artist Of The Year. We were sitting next to folk from Rockhampton,

The other acts put on a great show, including Adam Eckersley Band, Drew McAlister, Missy Lancaster, Caitlyn Shadbolt, Mickey Pye, Liam Brew and more. I was one of the many volunteers on the day - and worked one of the three bars. The Rainbow Beach Surf Lifesavers received

a generous donation; the P&C take the earnings from their stall which will help with a school camp. As a thanks to the Rainbow Beach Cricket Club loaning their 25-seater bus, Kroppy is helping them organise a special celebration for an upcoming home game. Rainbow Beach Boardriders will benefit via their Memorial Competition. The town was booked solid, so they ran a bus to Inskip Point. I congratulated Kroppy on it being so well organised. He said, “That’s Marnie. It is thanks to her it ran so smoothly. It’s been ten years in the making to get to this - now it is a money earner.” He said he had two negative comments. One was the heat, so he’s planning a circus tent for next year. The other was there was too much food in the VIP area. “I’m happy to change that!” he smiled.

Photographing Cooloola: Carlo Sand Blow By Julie Hartwig, Tin Can Bay Camera Club

C

ARLO SAND BLOW is a saddle-shaped mass of windswept sand that covers 15 hectares. The eastern side overlooks Wide Bay and Double Island Point, while the western side overlooks the Great Sandy

National Park and Tin Can Bay. To the north, you can see the Great Sandy Strait and glimpses of Fraser Island. With directional views like this, there are plenty of stunning scenes to photograph. Here are a few photo ideas: l Facing east and west, it’s the perfect

location to photograph sunrises and sunsets. l Views from the eastern edge take in the wide sweep of beach from Rainbow to Double Island Point, including the coloured sand cliffs. These glow rich iridescent reds, golds, oranges, yellows and browns in the early morning light. In the afternoon, the cliffs gradually come into shadow, and the colours become more muted. l The midday sun turns the water beautiful turquoise and deep blue colours, often found in tropical paradises. l The dead trees on the Blow make stunning focal points and when shooting into the sun, create great silhouettes. l People sand tobogganing on the hill beside the viewing platform or paraand hang-gliding off the Blow can offer great action shots. l When the sun is low in the sky (morning and afternoon), use a low viewpoint to accentuate the shadows and patterns created by the ripples in the sand. l Capture the vastness of the Blow by including people in your photos – a wide Carlo Sand Blow from the southern side Photo by Julie Hartwig

City Farm recommend Myrtles M

ANY OF AUSTRALIA’S best-known plants come from the Family Myrtaceae - the myrtles. Gums, tea trees, bottlebrushes, paperbarks and lillypillies are some of the myrtles. These plants were of great value to Indigenous Australians who obtained food, water, shelter, tools and utensils from the various species. Melaleucas - paperbarks or honey myrtles - make attractive garden plants as they have lovely flowers in a wide range of colours and nectar loved by honeyeaters and many insects. The colourful new foliage

is another ornamental feature. Melaleucas tolerate most soil types and require little maintenance, though light pruning after flowering will promote a tidier shape. A native-specific fertiliser applied early spring and autumn and after pruning will be beneficial, and mulching is always recommended. Please note: City Farm will be closed until Tuesday January 8. For three months from the beginning of 2019, we are trialling opening on Thursdays from 8am - 3pm, and if there is enough interest, will continue to

open on Thursdays. Cooloola City Farm, opposite the Community Centre, on Tin Can Bay Road, is open to the public for plant sales on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 8am-3pm, 07 5486 2304, ccfni09@ gmail.com, www.cooloolacityfarm.org Plant of the month is Melaleuca thymifolia (Thyme-leaved honey myrtle), an adaptable shrub to around a metre with mauve flowers spring to summer. angle photo will take in the view and make people look tiny, giving photos a sense of scale. l From the southern side of the Blow, you get fantastic views looking north across the Blow. From the right spot, a panorama photo will include the Great Sandy Strait, Fraser Island and the Pacific Ocean. Finally, it’s nearly always windy on the Blow. Wind-driven sand can get inside camera bodies, in between the barrel sections on lenses, in the recesses around buttons, etc, and can be very difficult to remove. Think twice about changing lenses in windy conditions, but if you have to, take suitable precautions to protect your camera. It’s useful to carry a blower brush and cleaning clothes to keep your gear – especially the lens – clean, and remember to give your gear a good clean once you get home. Happy snapping! More tips next month. The Tin Can Bay Camera Club’s next meeting: 7pm, Wednesday, January 16 at TCB Library. For information about club activities and to view members’ images, visit www.tincanbaycameraclub.wix.com/ tcb-camera-club.

Rainbow Beach Police Beat by Senior Constable Mick Emery

Lessons from Outer Space L

EGEND HAS it that – at the height of the space race – NASA was stumped by the problem of how to develop a ball point pen that would work in the zero gravity conditions of outer space, and subsequently spent millions of dollars to develop one. The Russians, on the other hand, solved that problem by handing their cosmonauts…a pencil! The take home message was one of ‘simplicity’ and reinforced the notion that simple solutions to problems are often the best… And so it is with a recurring problem we have in Rainbow Beach at the moment: insecure premises. For one unfortunate

local, leaving her doors unlocked (because ‘hey, this is Rainbow Beach’) resulted in her receiving an after midnight visit from an intimidating drunk who staggered into her house. After relocating him (to the Gympie Watch House) police were pleased to hear that this local is now locking her doors. But only a week later, this time at 5am, another disorientated drunk found yet another unlocked door. And – because it was unlocked – the drunk concluded simply: ‘this must be it’… and promptly went in and fell asleep on the sofa in his vomit stained shirt. Nice. A few days later word came in that an

unlocked caravan had been entered – this time by a would-be thief who was probably thinking ‘easy pickings’ before the owner woke up and chased him out. And then there was the conversation that I had with the motorist who had left his keys in the car with the engine running while he went and did his shopping. ‘It won’t happen to me’ could describe his thinking (or lack thereof…) Of course, a NASA-like approach to this problem would be to study the phenomena, throwing money at research topics like: ‘the disorientated behaviour of drunks after midnight’; or ‘how easy access to dwellings provides money for

drugs’; or ‘how long does it take to steal a car when keys are left in the ignition’… The Russian approach, on the other hand, is genius in its simplicity: lock your doors… It’s not rocket science.

Laugh away your day with QCWA F

Elwin Sawyer and Irene Manwaring share a smile at a general meeting

OR MOST THAT think of the term ‘CWA’ the first thing that comes to mind is scones and ‘little old ladies’ having a chin wag. The Country Women’s Association originally began after WW1 as a way for women to have similar comradery that the men shared. This concept has grown to encompass an empowering movement that has taken the world by storm. Yes scones still make an appearance; even the ‘rock cake’ efforts are giggled about (although would never win a cooking competition), and the ‘chin wag’ over a nice hot cuppa is definitely a core part of morning tea but the concept of ‘little old lady’ is a modern day myth. QCWA members are made up of all walks of life from different backgrounds and varying

abilities. There is only one common thread among the ladies - fun! The drive to have a good time, maybe try something new, get out of the house for a few hours, keeps smiles on dials all round. So if you are going into 2019 feeling a little isolated and wanting to meet a few new faces, maybe looking to expand your skill set with the vast competition opportunities QCWA offers or just wanting a safe place to just be yourself then come along to the many events that the QCWA Tin Can Bay Branch offers. Coffee, chat and craft morning teas, HOY games, community service activities and various other social opportunities all await! For more information contact either President, Dawn, on 0434 518 836 or Secretary, Irene, on 0419 926 085.

Y NEW YEAR’S resolution is to finish my UFO’s (unfinished objects), of which I have a few. We had our Christmas lunch at the Rainbow Beach Sports Club and the meal was excellent as always. We had a great time with great company and lots of food. Our thanks go to the staff at the Sports Club for the great job they do for us. We will be back to quilting on January 15, all refreshed and ready to go. Our first day won’t be too energetic as we will all be catching up and talking - lots of that. On January 22 we will be making a small bag called ‘Nellies Sewing Bag’, Irene is going to show us how to do this.

On February 20 we are going on a bus trip out to Bells Bridge and Howard to look at some fabric and maybe buy some! Not only do we make quilts of all shapes and sizes, we do make smaller items such as bags, cup holders, table runners, placemats etc. So it does not have to be a quilt you make if you want to come and join us. You do not need an expensive machine if you are learning, just a straight sewing machine is good enough. We have quite a few interesting projects in the year, as well as a few bus trips, so if you are interested, join us. We are always looking for new members

16 – Rainbow Beach Cooloola Coast Community News – January 2019

- we are a friendly group! If you have never done patchwork or would like to learn to sew, come along, there is always someone to help you. Coastcare has secured nearly $60,000 in grants in 2018 to continue their work for new and existing research and citizen science projects such as WaterWatch (adults and youth versions), TurtleCare (beach walkers wanted), biodiversity monitoring with another BioBlitz planned for 17-19 May 2019 and more underwater research in eight creeks in Tin Can Inlet. The Weed Warriors will be back in 2019 caring for the Tin Can Bay foreshore. Coastcare is looking for volunteers interested in forming weeding teams for other areas needing attention. Coordinator, Dr Lindy Orwin, said she is looking forward to an exciting year ahead for Coastcare. Check out their updated website at www.cooloolacoastcare.org.au

2019 Resolutions W

Help save the planet

ASTE MINIMIZATION starts with each and every one of us. At least that is the mantra from Elli Webb, Waste Education Coordinator from Gympie Regional Council. “The first question to ask everyone,” said Elli, “is ‘Where does your rubbish/ waste come from?’ Answer: ‘the shops’. “You purchase something and it comes wrapped in a package, we consume what is inside this package and then throw the package away.” Elli had a year free of packaging, aiming to create zero waste. She only produced a handful of items after the year, in what was a steep learning curve.” Elli is clear with how each and everyone of us can make a difference, “You buy your rubbish. Who puts it in your trolley? Answer: you do.” She asks each of us to practise and ‘Be a smart shopper’. “The first thing that I would advise anyone wanting to reduce their impact on the earth, look at what they throw away regularly. Do a waste audit on your bin.” She says through the waste audit you will discover what is regularly thrown away. Once the rubbish is identified at your house, try to purchase that rubbish/packaging in a different way re: recyclable packaging, reusable packaging, buy in bulk so that you do not have small items of rubbish which could become litter. From experience, Elli says, “I strongly suggest that you change one thing at a time – re: no more small packets of chips – only large packets. No more poppers, only large bottle of juice decanted into reusable bottles.

In Brief YAP is taking Containers for Change The Cooloola Coast Youth Activity Project is keen to recycle your cans and bottles through the Containers for Change initiative. As a part of our annual fund raising efforts we would appreciate all items be kept out of the recycling bin and thrown our way instead. Alternatively, you can take the containers to a refund point and quote the number C10030407 to make a donation to YAP. Arrangements for collection of the items can be made by calling Jess on 0411 218 254 or they can be bagged and dropped at 124 Emperor St Tin Can Bay. Please ensure all glass items are either boxed or placed in suitable containers to avoid breakage. The funds raised help encourage, support and empower the next generation. We are hoping to invest in equipment including audio gear and outdoor sports/games to expand our program.

Resource Centre is here to help We would like to remind everyone that we have moved to the Centrelink building under the Community Church, as people still seem to be unaware we have moved from the library. We can offer food vouchers for those in genuine need (Centrelink Income Statement Required) or fuel vouchers for those who need to travel to Gympie or elsewhere for medical appointments (please bring your doctor’s appointments with you). We can also offer referrals for various other organisations to assist you with budgeting, Child and Family Connect, carer support and many more. We are located at the Centrelink Building in Buchanan Street, Tin Can Bay. We will be reopening on Friday January 4, 2019. Normal office hours are: Wednesday and Friday 9am – 12pm. The Resource Centre would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a happy and prosperous new year.

Coolabay Choir wants you Elli Webb, Waste Education Coordinator from Gympie Regional Council had tips for students from RBSS, tips that all ages would benefit from

“Habits take about one month to form – so get used to one small change at a time and then that change will become a habit and last forever.” What are you waiting for? 2019 is here and ready for change.

We have such a special group of songsters who come to practices regularly and give 100% energy and enthusiasm. We are small in number but are achieving some pretty amazing goals. It would be great to have a few more dedicated voices who appreciate the beauty of singing in harmony and working towards these aims. Some members have sung with larger choirs as BIGSING2018 at Brolga Theatre Maryborough and GYMPIE SINGERS at the Remembrance Service in the park in Gympie in November. There are more invitations offered and we also have compositions by our own local musicians to work on. If you are interested to join us, please contact Pam on 0427 180 649 or kcisf327@gmail.com

Do you think our community deserves a new Community Hospital? Then now is the time to sign the petition

T

HE CAMPAIGN by local people for a new small community hospital for Cooloola Coast residents is well and truly underway, with 1,265 residents signing the petition already. This is estimated to be about 28% of all adults living permanently in the Cooloola Coast region. We need a further 1,000 signatures to put beyond all doubt, as far as the State Government is concerned, that we need and want this hospital. We now have until the end of January to get these extra signatures before presenting the petition to the Queensland Minister for Health when parliament resumes in February.

Please encourage your friends and neighbours who have yet to sign the petition to do so immediately. Petitions can be signed at the following locations: Rainbow Beach – Rainbow Beach Medical Practice, Pharmacy, IGA Cooloola Cove – Woolworths, Pharmacy, Thirsty Camel Tin Can Bay – Cooloola Coast Clinic, IGA, Bakery, Country Club This campaign is backed by local councillor, Mark McDonald, local state MP, Tony Perrett, and needs the backing of every member of our community. The small community hospital envisaged will provide day surgery such as endoscopies and specialist skin cancer surgery. It will encourage visiting specialists to provide medical services, so local patients have to travel less. It will also improve after-hours emergency care and transfer to regional hospitals.

One thing a lot of people don’t know about is the most effective form of emergency contraception - something you can do after sex if you think you could be at risk of pregnancy (you’ve missed pills, the condom broke, your partner pulled out but you’re not sure if it was in time... whatever...).

Please call Sarah Booth today to discuss your needs

*** Getting a copper IUD inserted (they’re the plastic framed ones with copper coiled around it) within five days of unprotected sex is very, very likely to work*** The emergency contraceptive pill (it’s not just for the morning after - it can be used for 4, and even 5 days after) is easier to get. Any chemist in Australia should be able to supply it. No need for a doctor’s prescription. There are two kinds and they’re roughly equivalent. They work by delaying ovulation (releasing an egg from your ovary), giving the sperm a chance to disintegrate before your egg is around. But if you’re on the verge of ovulating or have just ovulated, they won’t put it back and they can’t stop implantation if fertilisation does take place. Taking it in the fertile window (it’s hard to know whether or not ovulation will have already happened, but this is from the 5 days before to 1 day after expected ovulation) gives a 32-40% failure rate. Worth getting, because much better than crossing fingers.... The copper IUD can work whether or not you’ve ovulated. Inserted within 5 days of unprotected sex, if you’re not already pregnant/at risk of pregnancy, it’s highly likely to work, with a failure rate of a few in a thousand or even lower. It’s dearer than the emergency pill, and not as easy to arrange: you might need to phone around to find a doctor/women’s health/family planning/abortion clinic

Ph: 0432 690 194

The copper IUD

to fit you in and insert it. It’s uncomfortable or painful to get inserted (ask for anaesthetic spray). But it’ll most probably work. Then you can either get it taken out once the scare is over and you’ve had your period or your negative pregnancy test.... or leave it in for a few months to see if it suits you.... and up to ten years if you like it and want to keep using it. (Although it can’t affect your mood or skin or weight or sex drive, won’t interfere with any medications and doesn’t increase your risk of heart attack, blood clot, stroke or migraine, there’s a 50-50 chance it will make your periods longer, heavier or more painful, or some combination of those three.)

T THIS STAGE, with the information on hand, I have predicted that we will have four classes in 2019, and the makeup of the classes will be similar to those we had this year. This will of course be influenced by our numbers on Day 8, 2019.

The easiest antenna for the traveller

Class groupings will be based on a range of aspects including academic, social and emotional well-being, engagement and the number of students we have in each year level. A list of the classes and teachers will be placed on the notice board outside the office on January 24, 2019. I have been racking my brain for something clever and insightful to write about and that is a difficult task for myself sometimes. In the end, I really wanted to say THANK YOU. Thank you for your ongoing support of the school.

New updated Satellite Receiver now in stock

This is a great school where the staff, students and community are happy and the school has a good feel and balance. A balance between a great education and students having the opportunities to experience a variety of activities. As I have said before, I am proud of Rainbow Beach State School and proud of our achievements in 2018. I look forward to another successful year in 2019.

Annual Christmas Concert Brooke Bignall

Family and friends watched proudly as the P/1’s did a skeleton dance, 2/3’s sang and signed a song, Excellican’s performed their Excellistan anthem, and the 5/6’s brought a Dr Seuss favourite, The Lorax, to life! They also performed an excellent/ hilarious description of their favourite teachers, which had the crowd in stitches! Bailey Sanderson and Delilah Young were presented the Murray Johnson Bursary Award for their outstanding effort and happy disposition throughout the year.

I ALL, well another year has slipped by and boy it seemed like a quick one. It’s amazing how quickly those last ten weeks disappear and suddenly (BANG) Christmas rush and you realise how under prepared you are, well some of us anyway. Fishing this month has been a little

We managed a few trips and in different directions which produced much the same results, plenty of large cod, both Gold Spot and Maori cod. Pearl perch seem to be a little quieter this year, however still getting some great quality. A bit wider parrot, husser, wrasse, trout, Job fish and reds have been filling the boxes. Tin Can Bay Fishing Club Report

W

E ARE A very social club and get together often, where everyone has a great time making new friends, enjoying fishing, sharing different techniques, finding the best spots for the many different species of fish in the Bay, gaining and sharing knowledge on the best rigs to use and learning the best times and tides. Catches in January will depend upon prior weather conditions and rainfall, as these will dictate water temperatures. Lately, water temperatures inside have ranged between 19 and 26 degrees with the lower temperature waters producing better catches. Recent catches of both diver and summer whiting in good numbers are being reported on the flats and some as deep as 8m. Bream and flathead are also being reported, mainly at night, with mangrove jack starting to come on. Trevally are also being caught in the Inlet. Try surface lures or yabbies on the flats and near the edges with traditional baits and plastics in deeper waters. Good hauls of snapper are still being produced out wide, plus squire and chopper tailor in smaller numbers being caught off the beaches around Inskip Point. Club fishing days include boatbased fishing within the bay, beach fishing at Rainbow Beach, Inskip Point and outside day trips. Some of our trips away include

stays at Borumba and Boondooma Dam where members catch bass, yellow belly, saratoga and red claw. Why not come along and meet some of the members at the Tin Can Bay Markets on the third Saturday of every month or attend a general bi-monthly meeting at 4pm on the second Wednesday of the month at our Club House – 33 Dolphin Ave, Tin Can Bay. Next meeting will be held on Wednesday February 12, BYO nibbles and drinks, and all members and visitors are welcome. Phone the secretary on 0437 242 171. Members wish to thank the Gympie Regional Council and Mayor Mick Curran, Queensland Government Mr Tony Perrett MP, and Federal Member for Wide Bay, Mr Llew O’Brien MP, plus local sponsors and the local community for their ongoing support and assistance throughout 2018. We take this opportunity to wish you all a happy and safe 2019.

Fishing, Boating & the Great Outdoors

The bones of HMAS Wyatt Earp Ian Ross

It has been 100 years since the Natone, or Wyatt Earp first set sail, and exactly 60 years since her demise on Rainbow Beach ...

T

HE PICTURES attached to this article show remains from the Ulverstone Shipping Company tramp costal vessel Natone which ran aground during a fierce cyclone at Rainbow Beach on January 2324, 1959. Although known as Natone at the time of her death, she only used this name for the last three of her 40 years. Originally christened as the Fanefjord this 41.3-metrelong vessel left her Norwegian shipbuilding yard in 1919 to commence work in

the Norwegian herring fishing trade. She was built with very heavy timbers, so she could withstand arctic ice if encountered. In 1933 she was purchased by American explorer Lincoln Ellsworth, who renamed her Wyatt Earp after the marshal of Dodge City and Tombstone Arizona. Wyatt Earp was a tough Marshal and Ellsworth hoped this vessel would be equally tough. He took her to Antarctica four times between 1933 and 1939. During WWII she was acquired by the Royal Australian Navy who chose to rename her HMAS Wongala, an aboriginal word for a boomerang. She was paid off after the war but in 1947 was reacquired by the Navy for new Antarctic exploration and reverted to the old name as HMAS Wyatt Earp. Paid off again by the Navy in 1948 she

reverted to her costal tramp duties as the MV Wongala. In 1956 she was purchased by the Tasmanian-based Ulverstone Shipping Company who named her Natone, after the Tasmanian potato growing town near Ulverstone. Natone was bound for Brisbane after an uneventful cruise from Cairns when she struck severe weather north of Double Island Point. She sprang a leak and headed for cover using her sails after the engine room flooded but, alas, ran aground on the Mudlo rocks. Although she had been built to withstand ice, she was no match for the pounding surf and broke up after a few days. There are several pieces of Natone’s hull still scattered along the beach. They only become visible after severe erosion when the sand levels return to those that were present in January 1959. The attached

Wyatt Earp - an early photo in the 1930s

photos were taken after severe erosion in January 2008. I don’t believe the bones of Natone or HMAS Wyatt Earp, as I prefer to call her, have emerged again since then.

EAM COOLOOLA / Bundy / Burnett / Hervey Bay paddled as Cooloola at the Redcliffe/Lakers regatta at Lake Kawana on December 2. While no records we broken, we were one great outfit! A fun day with good, tight racing! Festive celebrations at the TCB Yacht Club was a great night of fabulous food and fun company. Our “long paddle” last month proved to be a very successful event being joined by 14 of our Hervey Bay paddling friends - 6km to the power lines and home. Thanks safety boat crew, for retrieving our food esky which you left sitting on the boat ramp! For information on our club, please phone either Sandy 0402 352 756, or Sylvia 0417 707 960, or Elaine for info re car pooling 0400 608 547.

OMPETITION 4 was a fast and furious affair, with players vying for individual honours in the two levels. Some great games over the month in both singles and doubles, providing plenty of excitement for both players and spectators. Champion player for level 1, with 44 from a possible 48 points, was Dave Arthur; second on 38 points was Simmo, and equal third on 34 points, Gerard Lynn and Heatley Gilmore. For level 2, equal champions on 41 points, Jane Hudson and Pam Runnegar, second on 38 points Trish Torenbeek and third on 35 points Alex Brantz. Special mention to supersub Bob Gudge, who helped out a few level 1 absentees, and to all competitors for playing fast and playing hard, and enjoying it all! Next competition to start January 23 and it will be in this individual format again. Let Bob 0477 001 912 or Wolf 0400 315 465 know if you’re in.

018 HAS been a fantastic year for the Cooloola Coast Little Athletics Centre with membership up by over 200%. Athletes have been super keen and have smashed through the Achievement Awards Program in the first half of the season. Green Levels were presented to several participants at the end of the 2018 break up, with many on the way to earning Red Levels by the end of the season. Congratulations all the Cooloola Coast champions, your hard work has paid off! With many so close to making the grade, it won’t take much training to have most athletes making a mark on the achievement chart by the end of March. The Suncoast Regional Championships will be held in Gympie this year, so we are hoping to get as many athletes entered as possible, as the experience is not to be missed. 2019 training will resume on January 12 to maximise the time before the Championships.

HE RAINBOW BEACH Cricket Club is looking to continue their current form into the new year after a forfeit win in round six and a strong win over Colts Cricket club in round eight. The 40-degree heat made the decision for captain Merv O’Neill when he won the toss an easy one. Rainbow Beach batted first and in the scorching heat it proved to be the correct decision, as Rainbow Beach found themselves at 3-120 mid way through the innings, with an impressive half century from Murray Everett (59) and a good knock from Andrew Simpson (38). This partnership put Rainbow Beach in prime position come the second drinks break. However Colts found form with the ball and took the rest of the wickets conceding only 15 runs. It was then Colts turn with the bat who required 156 to win their second match for the season. The lethal Rainbow Beach bowling attack stood in the way and Colts struggled to keep the runs ticking over. Colts were eventually bowled out for 108 after 30 overs, after Andrew Simpson took four wickets for only 13 runs. For all wishing to come and support us, our games for this month are January 5 and 19 at home, and an away game in Gympie on January 12. A Little Humour HOW DO COURT REPORTERS KEEP STRAIGHT FACES? These are from a book called Disorder in the Courts and are things people actually said in court, word for word, taken down and published by court reporters that had the torment of staying calm while the exchanges were taking place. ATTORNEY: What was the first thing your husband said to you that morning? WITNESS: He said, ‘Where am I, Cathy?’ ATTORNEY: And why did that upset you? WITNESS: My name is Susan! ATTORNEY: What gear were you in at the moment of the impact? WITNESS: Gucci sweats and Reeboks. ATTORNEY: What is your date of birth? WITNESS: July 18th. ATTORNEY: What year? WITNESS: Every year. ATTORNEY: How old is your son, the one living with you? WITNESS: Thirty-eight or thirty-five, I can’t remember which. ATTORNEY: How long has he lived with you? WITNESS: Forty-five years. ATTORNEY: This myasthenia gravis, does it affect your memory at all? WITNESS: Yes. ATTORNEY: And in what ways does it affect your memory? WITNESS: I forget. ATTORNEY: You forget? Can you give us an example of something you forgot? ATTORNEY: Now doctor, isn’t it true that when a person dies in his sleep, he doesn’t know about it until the next morning? WITNESS: Did you actually pass the bar exam? ATTORNEY: The youngest son, the 20-year-old, how old is he? WITNESS: He’s 20, much like your IQ.

ATTORNEY: Were you present when your picture was taken? WITNESS: Are you sh*tting me? ATTORNEY: She had three children, right? WITNESS: Yes. ATTORNEY: How many were boys? WITNESS: None. ATTORNEY: Were there any girls? WITNESS: Your Honor, I think I need a different attorney. Can I get a new attorney? ATTORNEY: How was your first marriage terminated? WITNESS: By death. ATTORNEY: And by whose death was it terminated? WITNESS: Take a guess. ATTORNEY: Can you describe the individual? WITNESS: He was about medium height and had a beard ATTORNEY: Was this a male or a female? WITNESS: Unless the Circus was in town I’m going with male. ATTORNEY: Is your appearance here this morning pursuant to a deposition notice which I sent to your attorney? WITNESS: No, this is how I dress when I go to work. ATTORNEY: Doctor, how many of your autopsies have you performed on dead people? WITNESS: All of them. The live ones put up too much of a fight. ATTORNEY: ALL your responses MUST be oral, OK? What school did you go to? WITNESS: Oral... ATTORNEY: Do you recall the time that you examined the body? WITNESS: The autopsy started around 8.30pm ATTORNEY: And Mr. Denton was dead at the time?

34 – Rainbow Beach Cooloola Coast Community News – January 2019

WITNESS: If not, he was by the time I finished. ATTORNEY: Are you qualified to give a urine sample? WITNESS: Are you qualified to ask that question? And last: ATTORNEY: Doctor, before you performed the autopsy, did you check for a pulse? WITNESS: No. ATTORNEY: Did you check for blood pressure? WITNESS: No. ATTORNEY: Did you check for breathing? WITNESS: No. ATTORNEY: So, then it is possible that the patient was alive when you began the autopsy? WITNESS: No. ATTORNEY: How can you be so sure, Doctor? WITNESS: Because his brain was sitting on my desk in a jar. ATTORNEY: I see, but could the patient have still been alive, nevertheless? WITNESS: Yes, it is possible that he could have been alive and practicing law. 3 WISHES An Irishman is walking along the beach one day, and he sees a bottle laying in the sand. He picks it up and starts to brush it off, and out pops a genie. The genie says, “Since you have freed me from the bottle, I will grant you three wishes.” The Irishman thinks for a moment and says, “I’m feeling a might thirsty, I think I’ll be wishing for a pint of stout.” POOF! There is a pint of stout in his hand. He drinks it down, and starts to throw the bottle, when the genie says, “I’d look at that bottle again before I threw it if I were you.” So he looks at the bottle, and it is magicaly filling back up with stout. The genie told him, “That is a magic bottle, and

it will always fill back up after you finish it.” The genie then asked, “What other two wishes can I grant for you?” The Irishman looks at the bottle in his hand and says, “I’ll be taking two more of these.” LUXURY CAR A sixteen-year-old boy came home with a Porsche and when his parents began to yell “Where did you get that car? He calmly told them, “I bought it today.” “With what money?” they demanded “We know what a Porsche costs.” “Well,” said the boy, “this one cost me fifteen dollars.” The parents began to yell even louder. “Who would sell a car like that for fifteen dollars?” they said. “It was the lady up the street,” said the boy. “I don’t know her name; they just moved in. She saw me ride past on my bike and asked me if I wanted to buy a Porsche for fifteen dollars.” “Oh no,” moaned the mother, “she must be a child abuser. Who knows what she will do next? John, you go right up there and see what’s going on.” The boy’s father walked up to the house where she lived and demanded to know why she had sold a Porsche for fifteen dollars to his son. “Well,” she said, “this morning I got a phone call from my husband. I thought he was on a business trip but learned from a friend he has run off to Hawaii with his secretary and doesn’t intend to come back. He claimed he was stranded and asked me to sell his new Porsche and send him the money. So, I did.”

A big thank you to Tony Stewart for providing the majority of these jokes! Thank you to everyone who forwards on their funnies to us. We really appreciate it, please keep them coming in 2019: info@rbcn.com.au
