And here is 2022! Can you believe it?

Rainbow Beach will be welcoming the new year with fireworks on the beach. After last year’s disappointing cancellation I am certain it is going to be a huge night and a great opportunity for the community to come together and enjoy themselves.

Tin Can Bay will have its own fireworks display, organised by Cr Jess Milne and made possible by donations from local businesses. Both lots of fireworks are scheduled for family-friendly times, so there will be plenty of time to party the night away afterwards - or be tucked up in bed before 10pm which personally is my most favoured outcome!

2022 is already set to be a huge year for

the town, with new businesses cropping up, new residents joining us, and our brand new state-delivered kindy starting up at the school. Such fantastic news for our little ones, I can’t wait to see their beaming faces on their first day.

Now, as promised, I’m inflicting a wedding photo on you - it is actually our ten year anniversary on 21 January so I suppose it is kind of appropriate. As you may recall, we were married at the marina in Tin Can Bay (after getting engaged at Carlo Point the previous year).

It was such a lovely spot for a wedding, very relaxed and with the beautiful backdrop of the boats on the water - but I most certainly do not recommend a January wedding! It was held at 4pm and we gave all of our guests fans but it was still meltingly hot. We even had a storm.

Oops. But then we had a rainbow, which felt pretty special I must say.

N FRIDAY 31 December, celebrate New Year’s Eve with your family and friends right here in Rainbow Beach.

This year’s celebration will include an epic fireworks display on the beach in front of the Rainbow Beach Surf Club which will start at the family-friendly time of 9pm.

Gympie Regional Council Mayor Glen Hartwig says this year’s celebrations will be the perfect way to see in the new year and bring an end to what has been another difficult year for so many residents.

“Without question, 2021 has been another challenging year, with COVID-19 restrictions having such a tremendous impact on residents and businesses in Australia and around the world.

With the new Queensland Health restrictions being updated recently, I am pleased to say that these changes will not affect our ability to celebrate New Year’s Eve this year at Rainbow Beach, with outdoor community events allowed.

There were plans to hold this event at Rainbow Beach last year, however as we have seen even the best laid plans are subject to change without notice.

We are looking at sharing this event across all of the regional areas in the years to come and I believe having it at Rainbow Beach this year will allow residents and tourists to relax on the beach, kick their feet up and watch the fireworks with the ones they love,” he said.

HE LAST SESSIONS of KindyLinQ were bittersweet. There was a lot of excitement when Santa came to visit, but some tears when saying goodbye to the beloved Ms C. Lynne Chamberlain has been a much loved teacher at Rainbow Beach State School for 13 years and has been paramount in the transition to “big school” for the little ones.

On behalf of everyone Ms C’s kindness and care has touched, we would love to send out a very heartfelt “THANK YOU” for

your dedication and love for our children.

You will be so missed, but we do hope you enjoy your early retirement!

Sarah Brantz and Lynne have delivered a great program with the introduction of KindyLinQ and over the course of this year the children have come out of their shells and are eager for their next years in Kindy (yes! Kindy is coming to Rainbow Beach) and Prep.

We hope you had a very Merry Christmas Mrs Brantz and Ms C, enjoy your holidays, you both deserve it!

EGETATION CLEARING for the Cod Street to Norman Point boardwalk in Tin Can Bay was started just before Christmas in preparation for construction works to begin in the new year.

Please be mindful when near the area that it is a worksite and that certain foreshore places are restricted access while the construction is in progress.

Caring Keira collects toys for kids

ARING LOCAL Keira Powers is a student and also arts and cultural captain at Rainbow Beach State School. This year she organised for the school to be a donation site for the Gympie Military Motorcycle Clubs yearly Christmas toy drive.

“The students at the school, their families, and the community were very generous with their donations,” said Keira’s proud mother Marissa Paulden.

“Keira was able to take a car boot full of toys from the region to donate. It is wonderful to see Keira and the other students donate many of their own toys, and to think of children less fortunate than themselves.”

The toys were distributed in the Cooloola Coast and Sunshine Coast area by the bikers in conjunction with St Vinnies.

Keira would like to thank her fellow students and the community for supporting such a great cause. She is hoping that it will become an event that the Rainbow Beach community will support each year.

Members of the motorcycle club plan to visit the school in the New Year to thank the students.

Military Brotherhood MMC CooloolaSunshine Coast said: “This year’s Christmas Toy Run was hailed a success with a collection this year bigger than expected, and with 120 bikes and cars it was a great day with much Christmas spirit and cheer to be had by all who attended. So many thanks to you all for your donations and support throughout the year, we really appreciate it.”

HIS YEAR WILL feature something new to bring in 2022.

The traditional Tin Can Bay fireworks display will be held on Tom Steele Oval near the water tower on New Year’s Eve at the family friendly time of 8:30pm.

The Cooloola Coast Youth Activity Project will be hosting some free pre-fireworks activities for the young at heart at the public tennis court from 5pm with a BBQ available.

The Sleepy Lagoon Hotel will be hosting a New Year’s Eve dine-in dinner with takeaway meals available as well.

The Sleepy Lagoon Hotel has thrown their

support behind the initiative with major sponsorship and local accommodation providers Tin Can Bay Tourist Park, Kingfisher Caravan Park, Sleepy Lagoon Motel, Marina Villas, Dolphin Waters Apartments, and the Sandcastle Motel have also come onboard with funding support.

Rainbow welcomes a special summer visitor Melissa Marie

AINBOW BEACH has had a very special and unusual visitor arrive recently, one who’s travelled a long way to see us.

A little barn swallow, Hirundo rustica, has decided to call our coastal town home for the holidays.

It’s very rare for this species of swallow to frequent this area of Australia, and the barn swallow hanging around Rainbow Beach is well south of the range it has been seen in the past, causing a great deal of interest in the birding fraternity.

For those with a keen eye, the barn swallow can be told apart from the much more common welcome swallows by its glossy blue-black upper parts, cleaner, whiter underparts and the darker black band across the breast.

Those keen to see this long-distance visitor can take a stroll by Spectrum Street, and you may just see the beautiful bird sitting with the welcome swallows or the tree martins that favour the power lines around there.

Initially recorded last summer by a birdwatcher, it appears to have returned to holiday again here this summer.

It was first noticed again for 2021 in midNovember and is still being regularly sought out and seen by birdwatchers over December.

When not resting on the wires, you may catch sight of the barn swallow diving close to the ground seeking out a meal of flies, bees, wasps, and beetles.

Be Aware, There Are Horses There!

O SEE A WILD horse grazing beside the road as you drive past is a mighty sight, however HQ Plantations is advising drivers to be aware of the risk this beauty brings.

When navigating roads in and around national parks and forestry areas be conscious that there are horses about and that during dawn, dusk, and night time the animals are more active but harder to see.

Did you know that HQ Plantations use a capture and rehoming method of mitigating this roadside

risk? Horses are given vital healthcare and while it may seem like the horses are free in the wild, they are under constant pressure (from predators etc) so when rehomed are offered safety and love.

HQ Plantations are proactive about mitigating risk to drivers and are asking the public to report horse sighting via the online portal at https://hqp.engagementhub.com.au/ feral-horse-public-safety-initiative so a log of horse movements can be recorded.

OLICE ARE URGING all road users to take extra care on the road network with the Christmas period approaching.

As the Queensland border has opened to interstate travellers, Queenslanders will see an increase in vehicular traffic on our region’s roads and beaches.

Sergeant Chris Watson of Gympie Highway Patrol said officers will be out across the region this holiday season strictly enforcing the Fatal Five.

“Motorists planning on heading to the beach are reminded that all road rules apply on beaches and our officers will be patrolling and taking a zero-tolerance approach to any unsafe beach driving and antisocial behaviour observed,” he said.

Before setting off, Sergeant Watson is urging drivers to make sure their vehicle is in a roadworthy condition, to plan

ahead, allow for adequate rest breaks and the additional traffic volume on the road network and above all – obey the road rules, especially around drink/drug driving, speed, seatbelts, and the use of mobile phones.

Add gas safety to your holiday checklist Q

UEENSLANDERS ARE encouraged to follow some simple gas safety checks to ensure portable gas appliances don’t ruin their camping, boating, or caravanning holiday.

Minister for Resources Scott Stewart said gas safety checks shouldn’t be overlooked when preparing caravans, boats and portable gas appliances like barbecues ahead of Christmas and the summer holidays.

“Gas appliances like barbecues, refrigerators, camp cookers, lanterns, and their connections can be dangerous if they are not regularly checked for damage, used correctly, and transported safely,”

Mr Stewart said.

“Take a little time to run through these gas safety checks before heading out on your holiday, and then enjoy whatever you do – safely.”

Resources Safety and Health Queensland has prepared some simple gas safety checks to ensure portable gas appliances are safe to use these holidays: • Follow manufacturer’s instructions for safe assembly and use.

• Check cylinders for holes, rust, dints, and damage and if it is damaged don’t use it.

• Check your cylinder’s test date stamp and if it hasn’t been tested in 10 years,

get a new one.

• Check fittings on barbecues, valves, and hoses for any signs of fading, fraying, cracking, or splitting and check for missing ‘O’ ring seals.

• Apply soapy water to connections between the appliance and the gas cylinder to check for bubbles, which indicates a dangerous leak.

• Secure gas bottles firmly in transit and keep them out of the sun, which can cause gas expansion and leaks.

• Always use a licensed gas fitter to fix, test, or install new appliances. You can look up licensed gas fitters on the Gas Safety Queensland site.

Fantastic news for our littlest locals with kindy starting at Rainbow school in 2022

ANTASTIC NEWS for some of our youngest residents, with enrolments now open for State Delivered Kindergarten at Rainbow Beach State School in 2022.

The plan has been in the works for quite some time, with a community meeting to discuss the possibility of a formal kindy in Rainbow Beach being held all the way back in June.

At the time, the P&C stated: “The Queensland Government is committed to giving all our children a great start. This includes supporting all kindergarten aged children to have access to an approved quality early childhood education program in the year before fulltime school.

“Currently, many children in our community do not attend a kindergarten program.

“Access to high quality kindergarten program is one of the few proven strategies for lifting outcomes for children in their education, health and life. Kindergarten programs not only provide children with a solid foundation for their future social, emotional and academic development, but play a key role in supporting children’s successful transition to school.

“Children participating in a State Delivered Kindergarten program will enjoy learning in an active, play-based way.

“Kindergarten programs help children to: • develop confidence as a learner; • learn alongside others; • be comfortable with the routines of school;

• use their imagination and play with ideas; and • develop skills that provide a solid foundation for their future.”

While the amazing KindyLinQ program helped fulfil a lot of these roles, having a formal kindergarten program will only further benefit our little ones in the long term by giving them the opportunity to attend kindy in their local community at their local school.

Approved kindergarten programs such as what will now be offered at Rainbow help to prepare children for the Prep year.

Children must be at least 4 by 30 June in the year they attend the program.

This only relates to enrolment in approved kindergarten programs—those meeting strict guidelines around teacher qualifications, the number of hours offered, and the actual learning program itself. Note that kindergarten programs are not compulsory.

Principal Steve Bennett held a meeting in December with some of the local parents to discuss the new program and to give information on eligibility and age requirements.

The school plans to hold another meeting for any caregivers who were unable to attend - keep an eye out for notifications or contact the school directly for details.

Children born between 1/7/17 and 30/6/18 should be eligible for enrolment for 2022 - call 5486 9333 when the school office opens to discuss requirements.

OR THE THIRD year, Santa and his elf descended from the skies courtesy of Rainbow Beach Helicopters, much to the delight of every child (and adult) present.

Boardies and sunnies clad Santa met with over 100 families and was photographed by Jess McKenzie from Rainbow Beach Wedding Photography, in front of a beach-themed backdrop designed by Jess and Jenna from Events in Bell Tents.

The beautiful “Boomerang Bags” ladies handed out Christmas themed Boomerang Bags filled with gifts and activities to the children as they left Santa’s lap!

Local artists Aido Van Der Vorst, Joel Mak, and Ethan from Aspy Jones graced the stage for a fabulous afternoon of entertainment and relaxation, with yummy food and drinks from market vendors and BBQ and bar volunteers.

Four very happy individuals took home some epic raffle prize packs, thanks to the incredible support and donations from local businesses.

The night ended with a spectacular fire show led by Tina Van Der Vorst from Van Clan Entertainment. Her troupe of kids aged between 3 and 15 (or 40ish…haha) wowed the audience with their brazen fire skills and glo performance.

Santa Comes to Rainbow wouldn’t be possible without dedicated and passionate volunteers, specifically Elisa Seul, president of the Community Hall. Her team of volunteers wow the community at each event, and it’s super special to have these sorts of events put on so regularly.

WAS A VERY successful year for the Rainbow Beach Community

We started the year with only three volunteers rotating to keep the office open, and finished the year with seven rostered volunteers.

The monthly markets are constantly growing and are very popular. We have launched the Rainbow Beach Spring Fest, hosted the Festival of Small Halls for the fifth year, Santa Comes to Rainbow third edition, hosted the Live & Local Music project and of course the Friday Catch Ups have been a wonderful resilient ongoing rendez-vous.

The Committee has worked passionately to create and coordinate more events for people of all ages, this came after the collection of community feedback through the survey we did in early 2020. A few members have also undertaken training

on procedures on how to stand up in case of a declared natural disaster as the hall is classified as an Evacuation Centre for the area.

The Rainbow Beach Community Centre has an enormous potential to be the hub for all residents and locals - the Association not only facilitates the access to the building, it also encourages community participation and inclusion through activities offered at the Centre and by linking community members to resources and support.

We aim to grow, become stronger and more representative of the wider community needs to preserve wellbeing and belonging. Memberships are now open for 2022, the support of each of you means a lot to the Association, it still costs only $5. Let us know you care about the Community too.

AST MONTH I thanked so many people that donated and made our big delivery of hampers and presents to Winton a huge success.

A big thank you to Trevor Tramacchi and his co-pilot Ken Warne (I think) who delivered the three pallets and other items to Winton for us. With the floods the only way out was via Rockhampton

to Longreach for the night, where they delivered $1000 to the principal of the School of Distance Education.

Next morning they unloaded in Winton coordinated by council family support and also left $3000 in Visa cards. They came back via Miles but had to detour a few times before arriving home at midnight.

The country to Winton from Longreach is terrible and much of the district is still a dustbowl missing all the rain so far. This

KITS, VERSE, JOKES, and songs were all part of the programme when the Cooloola Coast Probus Club celebrated Christmas with a luncheon at the Rainbow Beach Sports Club in mid-December.

With eighteen members in attendance, Cherryl Mossman was the chief organizer, but Judy Kiddle had Jo, Glenda, Val, Barbara and Maggie assisting her with various entertaining items.

Bruce is always good as a joke teller, and Dianne also rose to the occasion. With good food, lots of laughter and clapping, everyone was obviously having a good time.

by Graham, Maggie and Jo who were all sitting together!

A card was read, received from our Life Members John and Kay Olson who were unfortunately unable to join us for the occasion.The staff of the establishment were very helpful and efficient.

In February we will join with other Probus Clubs from our area for the annual Ecumenical Service and Blessing of the Collars in Gympie before resuming our normal meetings in Tin Can Bay in March.

Usually meetings are held on each second Monday of the month at 2.00pm at the Sandcastle Motel in Tin Can Bay and include a break for afternoon tea and a chat.

Massive Year for Tin Can Bay RSL Ross Carruthers

HAS BEEN a massive year for the Tin Can Bay RSL. The commemorations where we remember those who served our nation - Anzac Day, Vietnam Veterans Day, and Remembrance Day were very well attended and keep going from strength to strength.

Who could forget this year’s Anzac Day dawn service held on the foreshore of Tin Can Bay with the sun rising like a beacon from the eastern sky?

There were also record attendances at the monthly Drop-In Sausage Sizzle and the

Veterans and Community Morning Tea. It’s great to see these monthly free community service events being appreciated and so well supported by Cooloola Coast locals. The Sunday BBQ and Friday night members draw also continued to be popular.

Events organized by RSL volunteers during the year included Trivia with Tezza and team, bus trips to Gympie Races, Social Bowls and a winery, St Patrick’s Day, Mother’s Day, War Widows lunch, Melbourne Cup extravaganza, and more recently a great Christmas celebration.

HE TIN CAN BAY Community & Men’s Shed has been bursting at the seams but, thanks to the successful outcome of two grants in the later part of 2021, construction of multiple storage sheds on our site is becoming a reality.

Drafted plans include a 4 x 12 lockable wood storage shed, an 8 x 6 multi-purpose shed, a smaller 3 x 3 shed to house our Containers For Change needs, and a further

12 x 4 awning for drying timber.

Earthworks have already begun to ready the site and construction is anticipated to start March/April after Council signs off on the Development Application. So, physically, our site will take on a bigger, better, and more organised atmosphere which will provide more flexibility in courses and activities.

If you’re new to the area and would like to meet new friends or if you have projects that you need help with, we’re here to help. From Monday 10 January 2022 we’ll be open every weekday (9am – 1pm) with some regular classes occurring some afternoons.

YMPIE REGIONAL COUNCIL is in the last stages of finalising a strategy for Recreational Vehicles (RV) using CouncilOwned or Controlled Land.

The Strategy outlines previous stakeholder and community engagement, dump and water points, wastewater, long vehicle parking, unauthorised camping, local and regional site desired levels of service, plus existing and planned site locations.

Help develop the K’gari Waste Management and Resource Recovery Strategy

RASER COAST REGIONAL Council is developing a Waste Management and Resource Recovery Strategy for K’gari (Fraser Island), which aspires to protect and conserve the world-heritage and cultural values of the island, through sustainable waste practices.

Although K’gari waste management is managed by FCRC, since Rainbow is the “gateway to Fraser Island” it is relevant to our readers.

“The strategy will guide the allocation of funds and the timing of projects to improve waste management and resource recovery from the island. It’s about providing clear direction to ensure waste is managed to minimise environmental impact, and to protect the island,” Councillor David Lee said.

“The island is a major tourism and recreation hotspot and we don’t want it smothered under a layer of rubbish.

“Waste services for the residents in the villages are coordinated by Council while the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service looks after services for the thousands of tourists who flock to the island each year.

“The new strategy aspires to achieve a fit

for purpose waste and resource recovery service that will improve on current practices and align with both Butchulla lore (what is good for the land comes first) and the Fraser Coast Waste Strategy 2019-2029.”

This project received funding from the Australian Government under the Australian Heritage Grants Program 2020-21.

A consultation group, which includes representatives from the Butchulla people, residents, the tourism industry, groups providing services, operations, or maintenance of the island has been formed and met for the first time in mid-December.

Council is also calling for feedback from visitors and nearby residents through a survey that can be found on Council’s Engagement Hub https://frasercoast. engagementhub.com.au/kgari-wastestrategy. The survey closes on 25 January 2022.

Signs have been placed at the barge ramps to let residents and visitors know the survey is underway and to provide a quick link to the online survey.

It is anticipated that the final strategy will be presented to Council for adoption in August 2022.

T WAS WITH much sadness that I said farewell to the staff, parents, and students of Rainbow Beach State School during the last week of term as I will be unable to continue my role this year due to the Government’s mandate that all people working or volunteering on school grounds must be vaccinated.

I loved being back at the school last year and thank everyone for making me feel so welcome, and for the many friendships that were renewed and new ones made. It is so disappointing that our government has chosen to force everyone to be vaccinated and I am desperately hoping and praying that this will not extend to children.

It has been a tough few weeks since then, knowing that I will not be at the school this year, however opportunities are opening up whereby I can still be involved in supporting the Rainbow Beach community.

This includes continuing to open the Community Pantry at the Church of the Good Shepherd in Carlo Road on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10am to 2pm, starting again on Tuesday 3 January.

We opened the pantry in the two weeks prior to Christmas and a family from as far away as Maryborough heard about what we were doing and rang to seek assistance.

We helped several families in Rainbow Beach and Cooloola Cove and locals also dropped off items to pass on to others.

Items such as precooked meals, fruit, vegetables, canned goods and hygiene items are available at no cost to individuals

and families in need. A generous local lady is supporting us financially on a monthly basis and if you would like to do the same, please contact me on 0413 135 867 and I will give you our bank details.

I have been given permission from the Gympie Anglican Diocese to open the hall where the pantry is situated as a meeting place this year for parent groups and activities for students such as music, sewing, photography, computers, and art/ craft.

Tea and coffee are available so please call in for a cuppa if you are passing. I will continue to be a listening ear and a caring heart in the community, even if I can’t be at the school.

The timeless story of Christmas was remembered at a Community Carols Night at the Church on Sunday 19 December that commenced with a BBQ at 5.30pm and carols starting at 6.30pm. Carols and items were led by Pam Graham from Cooloola Cove and the Cooloola Coast Ukulele Group with the talented Gympie singing group ‘Rhythm ‘n’ Class’ also helping to lead the singing.

Thanks to Ray Bray for a great job of providing sound, Father Shaji from the Gympie Anglican Church for his devotion, members of the Good Shepherd Church especially Annette and Doug Collins and Lyn Bleakley for helping to organise the evening and my family for their willingness to help out with the BBQ.

Volunteer to care for our turtles

ANTA HAS NOT been the only visitor bringing gifts to Rainbow Beach this season - from now until the end of March 2022 wild turtles bestow us with the honour of witnessing their nesting season on our local beaches.

But the turtles need our help to keep them safe and to ensure their population is thriving.

Wonderful local volunteer group Cooloola Coastcare monitors local marine turtle activity in a project called TurtleCare.

Volunteers monitor turtles nesting on the beaches north and south of Rainbow Beach and assist with rescuing stranded and injured turtles.

This project was started during the 20182019 turtle season by Joan Burnett.

Do you walk along Rainbow Beach in the mornings on a regular basis?

Cooloola Coastcare is always looking for volunteers for TurtleCare on Rainbow Beach and Teewah Beach from October to March.

Training is provided at no cost.

While you are walking in the early morning, you can be looking for turtle

tracks or hatchlings and reporting them to the project leader. Even sightings of dead turtles or egg shells are useful data for their research.

There are three ways to participate in TurtleCare: Fully Trained Turtle Permit Holder: To qualify, you must participate in free training for seven days at Mon Repos Turtle Research Centre between December and March. It is an amazing experience.

You’ll spend time on the beach each night watching turtles laying eggs, relocating nests, tagging turtles, observing hatchings and collecting data.

CHOOL HOLIDAYS combined with the extended Christmas break resulted in a busy time at the Dolphin Centre lately.

Patch is wanting to be noticed by bringing in his gifts (sponges, rocks, bottles).

Looks like he is taking over from the

missing Mystique. I don’t think any dolphin could replicate Mystique’s feats though, especially the sunglasses saga.

Remember if you are a resident of the area you are welcome to the Centre and have free admission, only paying for feeding if you wish to participate. Please indicate to the gate person that you are local and can produce some form of identification.

We open at 7am and have viewing of the Dolphins until around 7.45am. Of course this depends on how many dolphins we have and how many visitors are lining up to be admitted. On really busy days we start feeding around 7.30.

With the influx of visitors from outside the region at the moment, here is some more information about our beautiful local dolphins: Our dolphin visitors Snapper Creek - Tin Can Bay is home to the Australian Humpback Dolphin.

We have a resident pod of nine humpbacks led by the alpha male, Mystique - the rest of his pod consists of Patch, Ella, Squirt, Harmony, Aussie, Valentine, Chompy, and White Fin. The Humpback is a river and estuarine dolphin requiring 18-20 metres of water to fish, and shallow tidal creek areas where you see them basking in the sun. Their diet consists of squid, fish, and crustaceans.

Caring for the dolphins There are some rules and regulations we ask our visitors to abide by to ensure our dolphins stay healthy and remain wild: • Only fish purchased at the site can be fed (a maximum quota of 3kg of fish per dolphin is fed each day) • Please ensure the flash on your camera is switched off to avoid potential injury to the dolphins eyes • Swimming with, or touching the dolphins is prohibited by law with penalties of up to $8,000 applying.

The dolphin feeding is regulated and closely monitored by the Queensland Government with a group of volunteers on site to ensure it is an enjoyable experience for both humans and dolphins.

What to expect The centre opens at 7.00am with viewing time until approximately 7:45am. On busy days feeding may start at around 7:30am.

There is only one feeding session per day.

On arrival visitors are welcome to join the volunteers in the water and get to know these beautiful mammals with a small group of people in the water at any one time.

FFish for the feeding is available on site.

We have a feeding fee of $10 per person to cover the cost of each fish purchased and our other costs. Dolphin feeding does mean getting wet, at least up to your knees ... so come prepared!

Once the dolphins are fed they generally return straight to the wild to get on with their day so be sure to be there early enough to give yourself the best chance of enjoying this wonderful experience.

Of course, these animals are wild so we cannot guarantee their arrival time or on any given day. However, patience is often rewarded when they are late so order some refreshments from the cafe, sit back, relax and enjoy the scenery. It is rare for no dolphins to visit but as with all wildlife experiences it can happen.

Patrolled Beach Swim in the flags in front of the Surf Lifesaving tower. Walk via the steps or walkway near the lookout and surf club, or drive onto Griffin Esplanade. 4WD beach access begins here.

Coloured Sands Visit the patrolled beach, near the surf tower or the lookout to see the 70 plus colours in our cliffs. From town, walk south 1km along the beach - for best colours 4WD or tour a further 9km.

Remember it is a gazetted road.

Carlo Sand Blow Park at the top of Cooloola Drive, and walk 600m up from the car park or bushwalk about 2km from the National Parks Office for spectacular views of the Coloured Sands, Double Island Point, Tin Can Bay Inlet and hang gliders.

Poona Lake Drive to Bymien Picnic Area (2WD) via 3km gravel on the Freshwater Road, (off Rainbow Beach Road). It’s a 40 minute walk to reach the cool waters of Lake Poona through beautiful rainforest and carrol (grey myrtle) scrub.

Searys Creek Only 7km from town towards Gympie, with 2 waterholes, boardwalks, bridges and history – do read the sign and spot the creatures. Always cool on the hottest of days.

Rainbow Beach Headland A look out, a viewing platform, 2 playgrounds, a skatepark, BBQs and picnic facilities. See the whales from here in season and watch the surfers out the front. Take a photo at the Cherry Venture propeller.

Double Island Point Access via the 4WD only Great Beach Drive or Freshwater Track. See dolphins, whales (seasonal), manta rays, turtles and walk up to our historic lighthouse. It has the longest break in Australia -when the swell lines up.

Mudlo Rocks Wander here at low tide, play in rock pools and watch 4WDs navigate any exposed rocks. ALWAYS check conditions and ask locals before you 4WD - it is not always safe, even close to low tide.

Middle Rock When tides and conditions allow, the walk to Middle Rock and back is a beautiful way to check out the Coloured Sands. From here, vehicle permits are required and dogs are prohibited.

Tin Can Bay Wildflower Walk Known for spectacular wildflower species, access this trail from the corner of Emperor St and Oyster Parade. Best in late winter and early spring.

Boat Ramps

This peninsula is the gateway to Fraser Island, a favourite fishing spot and pet friendly camping grounds for generations.

Only 15 minutes drive (2WD) from Rainbow Beach.

You can launch your boat at Norman Point and Crab Creek in Tin Can Bay or Carlo Point and Bullock Point near Rainbow Beach. All except Bullock Point offer toilet and scenic picnic facilities.

Tin Can Bay Foreshore Walk 4km from Crab Creek to Norman Point, over picturesque bridges, signage of flora and fauna, through mangroves, playgrounds and outdoor gyms. It is mostly flat and very safe for children on wheels. Look out for 137 species of birds.

Arrive from 7am, after feeding (fees apply), the dolphins leave for another day. A picturesque peninsula with public pool, playground, sailing, boat ramp and pontoon and picnic facilities.

Carlo Point For spectacular sunsets over the water, take a cheese platter or fish and chips and watch the day’s end. This favourite fishing spot is only 3 km from Rainbow Beach.

Great Sandy Strait If you love the wonderful peace and relaxation of sailing or cruising, the sheltered waters around Tin Can Bay are for you. You may see dugong, turtles, dolphins and more in this section of the Great Sandy Marine Park.

Fraser and Cooloola Great Walks A 90 km trail showcases natural and cultural features of the world’s largest sand island between Dilli Village and Happy Valley. Or trek 102 km from Noosa to Rainbow Beach through sandblows, past lakes and spectacular views.

Fraser Island K’gari World heritage listed, K’gari has over 40 lakes, rainforests, sand dunes, wildlife, four wheel driving and fishing! Take a 1 or 2 day tour, hire a 4WD or take your own.

OOLOOLA COASTCARE recently held their AGM at the Rainbow Beach Community Centre. The elected Management Team is now: President: Linda Tabe, Vice President: Tony Galea, Treasurer: Nancy Haire, and Secretary: Sue Riddett.

We are saddened that Coordinator Lindy Orwin is stepping down, due to family responsibilities. She has been an

inspirational leader, and will continue to coordinate certain projects.

All members are invited to initiate/lead any local environmental projects they see a need for.

We are continuing to pursue signs of seagrass in Tin Can Bay Inlet.

There will be a Cooloola Bioblitz in the area around Rainbow Beach the weekend of March 25-27, with naturalists and scientists keen to return and lead groups into nature.

Waterwatch Program

W

E ARE EXCITED to start off the new year with a boost to our program to monitor water quality in our local creeks.

Coastcare began the Waterwatch program here in 2014. Volunteers have committed to having a creek site or two of their own to visit and sample every two months. Our last program review was five years ago.

With a grant from Gympie Regional Council, we can offer all this during the next few months for all members of the Cooloola community: • Training in learning how to take samples and test the water • Training in how to calibrate the equipment periodically • An opportunity to visit the sites in person, and with photographs taken by drone, around Tin Can Bay, Cooloola Cove, and Rainbow Beach • An opportunity to review the sites: do we need to discontinue any that are inaccessible, or add any to be able to pinpoint problem areas?

• A session with Eva Ford (MRCCC) during February to teach us about frog identification doing frog surveys to assess riparian zone biodiversity

• Training in assessing further indicators of water quality: looking at the tiny insects (aquatic macroinvertebrates) with Jess Dean (MRCCC) • On-country visit with Kabi Kabi representative Kerry Jones to learn about traditional land and water use • Using an underwater drone for further monitoring of plant life in flowing creeks Book now for Friday 7 January when Jess Dean, (Mary River Catchment Coordinating Committee) will lead us for calibration and Waterwatch training. Double Island Point lagoon area – What do you want?

MOOTH WATERS sheltered from the south-easterly wind, where yachts anchor and children play in the shallow water. Kayakers dip their paddles, looking out for the dolphins feeding and the young turtles cavorting.

OR Jet skis and powerful Thundercats launch from the beach, up to 30 a day, roaring through the bay, rocking boats and scaring wildlife away. Some turtles are not so lucky, with carcasses showing evidence of boat strikes.

This is a Marine Park. A Go Slow Area (stay off a plane) applies around the Point.

Maritime Safety Queensland law stipulates a speed limit of 6 knots within 30m of anchored boats and 60m from people in the water.

“When navigating near, in or through a mooring area, drive slowly and keep wash to a minimum.”

But where are the signs? Who is enforcing safety in this popular area? Hervey Bay Water Police were contacted, but made just a brief uniformed visit.

What can we do?

• Take photos of “incidents”, with GPS enabled on the phone/camera. Vessel rego numbers are helpful.

• Ask for Marine Park signage on the beach, giving rules and contact information.

• Ask for more frequent patrolling.

• Ask for a total ban of jet skis in this area to protect wildlife and people.

There were hyped up kids bouncing out the energy on the jumping castle, obstacle course races (did anyone see Cr Milne’s run?), cornhole challenges, big Connect 4, colouring in, Christmas tree craft, fabulous face painting by Daisy, killer karaoke with Jen, stalls in the hall, art and craft comp, a beaut uke performance, big ball soccer, and a special visit from Santa in the fire truck.

The weather held out this year for the Christmas carols to remain outside so as the sun went down the big screen lit up with words of all the favourites. Gary from the Cooloola Wesleyan Methodist Church led the carols with live music and the audience belting out the words.

Cooloola Cove Residents and Friends would like to thank the Cooloola Wesleyan Methodist Church, Cooloola Coast Youth Activity Project, Cooloola Ukulele Group, and all the wonderful volunteers that make these events possible. On the fishing front all but 1 out of 5 trips had to be cancelled due to the weather.

while chasing whiting – he also landed his share of whiting.

Other members who ventured out report solid catches of mangrove jack, flathead, whiting, and trevally, with the jacks ranging between 44-48cm. There have also been the odd cod and barramundi being caught in the larger creeks.

The increase in fresh water has seen a few crabs on the move, but they are still patchy and the females are far more prolific.

Keep an eye out for crabs that are not full, generally you will find that not only do they feel lighter than expected but they will more than likely have a nice shiny new shell that hasn’t had a chance to pick up algae and other growths.

Too many mackerel add up to hefty fine

FISHER HAS been fined $7500 in the Maroochydore Magistrates Court after pleading guilty to going well over the Spanish mackerel catch limit on two occasions.

Minister for Agricultural Industry Development and Fisheries and Minister for Rural Communities Mark Furner said Fisheries Queensland was working hard to preserve low Spanish mackerel stocks and this sort of careless overfishing didn’t help.

“The limit for recreational fishers is three per person and this fisher was found on two separate occasions with 14 and 13 excess fish,” Mr Furner said.

“The Queensland Boating and Fisheries Patrol (QBFP) is investing significant

Tin Can Depot opens for Tin Can Bay

T

IN CAN BAY and Cooloola Cove locals can now recycle their eligible beverage containers over summer at a new Container Refund Point located at 3 Scullett Drive.

Recently opened in December, the new Containers for Change depot is operated

by U Can Recycle who also run depots in Maryborough, Hervey Bay, and Brendale.

U Can Recycle have been providing

container refund services to Tin Can Bay locals since October 2019, recently making the decision to expand their offering to include a depot.

Drink containers processed through the depot will provide direct refunds to the local public, as well as servicing the existing mobile refund point in Rainbow Beach and bag drops at the IGA

The depot will be fully staffed and in operation three days per week.

U Can Recycle Operations Manager, Joel Alexander, said he is excited about offering a new location for convenient recycling.

“We’re a family-owned business and we’re just thrilled to be able to expand our operations and can’t wait to see even more locals recycling their containers with us,” said Mr Alexander.

“We’ve had great feedback in our other

depots, and can’t wait to see people of all ages coming out to recycle and earn back 10 cents for each eligible container – the extra cash really adds up especially around this time of year!

“It’s been a great opportunity to create jobs, give back to local charities, and really be able to be a part of the local community.”

HE NEW VIV MASON Park shelter sheds in Tin Can Bay have been installed and Council have pushed through to have them ready for the Christmas crowd.

There are still landscaping works to be done however these will be completed once the pathway widening is finished which is scheduled for early next year.

E ARE TRULY blessed to have the sacred kingfisher (Todiramphus sanctus) as a resident in our area.

Brightening the branches where it perches, its turquoise back shines like a jewel, and its white belly, buff underparts, and black eye-mask complete the outfit.

Despite its name, the sacred kingfisher doesn’t actually have much of a taste for the pescatarian lifestyle, preferring instead to feast on bugs and spiders, small crustaceans, frogs, small rodents, and reptiles.

As fast as lightning, once they spot their prey they will swoop down from their

perch, collect their meal, and return to their perch to dine.

When it comes time to raise their young, the mating pair will build a nest either by burrowing into a termite mound or a river bank, or will use a hollow in a large branch.

The female lays a clutch of 3 to 6 eggs and both parents incubate the eggs and care for and feed the young.

Living predominantly in our coastal regions of mainland Australia, it is said this kingfisher got the name “sacred” from the Polynesians, whose culture believes this gorgeous bird is holy and has control over the waves, making Rainbow a perfect place for them to call home.

HEN YOUR TEAM comes back from a regatta and a team member tells you “it was one of the hardest but best days I have had, but what a buzz” you know it’s been good!

These words were exclaimed by Toni Archer of the Cooloola Coast Dragons after the recent Manly Dragon Boat Regatta at Lake Kawana in November.

The Cooloola Coast Dragons entered numerous events and although they did not win they all put in a tremendous effort.

Coach Sandy Wooster, recently granted life membership said, “I am very proud of all our paddlers, the new paddlers handled themselves very well, and our 2km time was one of our best ever!”

The Christmas and New Year Festive season is upon us and the Dragons will take a break until 9 January 2022 (really already) when they will be back on the water each Thursday from 3.30pm and each Sunday morning from 7.30am.

Training will commence almost immediately for the next big event, which is the Redcliffe Regatta at Lake Kawana on 23 January 2022. Additional training is scheduled for those entering into this event.

New members are very welcome, just come along on a Thursday at 3.30pm or Sunday at 7.30am to give it a go and experience paddling.

Throughout the year there are numerous events like the Bundaberg, Hervey Bay, 1770 Regattas, and naturally our own two day regatta here in Tin Can Bay on the first weekend in July 2022.

Over the last couple of months due to the increase in membership we have often been able to take out two dragon boats, affectionately named Ceratodus and Stamina, and visitors to the Bay have enjoyed watching the camaraderie of the crews as they take to the water.

The camaraderie of the members extends beyond the paddling and many are involved with shared activities of kayaking, camping, bushwalking, and other physical activities.

Not to forget the Dragon’s Lair Cafe at the Tin Can Bay markets each 3rd Saturday of the month. Staffed by Dragon volunteers, the breakfast menu is extensive and affordable.

Forty Year Anniversary of Tin Can Bay Yacht Club Kay Muir

HE 40TH ANNIVERSARY party, the last yacht club event of the year 2021, took off with a bang!

76 guests attended, some dressed as pirates, others in Christmas wear, others in their party outfits and all ready for an evening of nostalgia, reminiscence, and comparative sailing stories.

Robbie and Neil Noble (sons of Clarrie and Doris Noble - founders of the yacht club) attended with their families.

Very excited feelings ran through the crowd and at six o’clock the Commodore Peter Shaw invited everyone to charge their glasses with bubbly and to contribute

anecdotes, stories, and memories from 1981 onwards.

Our restaurant hosts Tony and Tanya came up trumps with the constant flow of food and the music provided by Gary and his vinyls stirred people to dance the night away.

Importantly, the main theme of the evening was the story of humble beginnings of the club to where we are today and a pride in belonging to this small club that has grown to host national event and keep sailing well in the forefront of life in Tin Can Bay, in Queensland, and in Australia.
