School’s Out...

T

HIS MONTH is all about fishing in Rainbow Beach, even the policemen are catching big ones!

School holidays are here again welcome visitors and all the contestants in the Fishing Classic. Fishing or not, if you are here for the classic we’ve included lots to do before the weigh-ins each night, read more on page 18 and 19. Plus there is the latest fishing reports and all important tide times (check out the Fishing and Boating section page 31 to 33). Make sure you view the new pontoon at Carlo Point, the latest addition to Rainbow. Cheryl and Kev from Wolf Rock Dive have already seen several whales last month and had one surface only metres behind their boat, so keep an eye out from the headland! Our family really enjoyed the pig racing on the long weekend. Well done Bruce and Terri and all your sponsors and helpers. What a brilliant fundraiser for melanoma research, in memory of your daughter Kelly.

We have included a report on the disappointing news of the golf club closure and have requested a comment from the owners. We are still awaiting feedback from government and council on Master Plans, Revitalisation Plans and more. Our new RBCT is off and running, it is great to see such a good turn up at the last meeting. A little reminder to community groups - you are very welcome to send through your dates and events by the 18th of the month. We will try to include them in the What’s On page and may be able help you to promote your event even more. Sid, we love how you bring our mail day in, day out. And jokes! Judy, Wayne, Tony and Peter - thank you for keeping me inundated with funnies. I wish I could print all of them! It’s great to hear of new owners and shops in town - we’ll update everyone in August. New group prepares for disaster

Cooloola Coast Community Information Group is made up of a committee of local people such as - Police, Ambulance, Rural Fire, SES, Coast Guard, Gympie Regional Councillors, Queensland Fire and Emergency Services, business owners, community groups and community members to cover the townships of Rainbow Beach, Tin Can Bay, Cooloola Cove, Goomborian and Neerdie in times of disasters or emergencies. In an emergency or disaster the group will operate from the Tin Can Bay SES shed on Snapper Creek Rd, Tin Can Bay and be linked to the Gympie Regional Council Disaster Centre, as an information centre for the Cooloola Coast area and can be contacted on 5486 4483 or Gympie Regional Council on 1300 307 800.

Terry has a huge amount of experience with time spent in the Army, the SES, Emergency Service Coordinator at Maroochy Airport and he has also worked in the Department of Emergency Services. URING May this year I had the pleasure of touring around Cape York for four weeks, visiting some remote stretches of coastline and camping beside crystal clear creeks on the Old Telegraph Track. In addition to the beautiful scenery, part of the appeal was also being able to flick a lure into waters renowned for their fishing. However, the whole trip made us all the more appreciative of our beaches here at home, where you can swim without the constant threat of Clean crocs. Up Australia Day has It’s on again! Firstly: get on board one of the local fishing charters – you’ll have a great day, learn heaps and take home enough fish to justify the price to your other half.

Secondly: while you are here, look after your fishing gear! Unfortunately, if you leave your rods and reels un-secured, there are opportunists who will take advantage of your oversight. Make sure that all of your camping (including heavy items like generators) and all fishing gear is secured. In other words, don’t let them get their hands on your tackle! In the event that you find property that may be owned by someone else, handing it in to Cooloola police is the most appropriate action. Kelly’s Pig Day Out ... a squealing success

RESSED IN KELLY’S favourite colour, family and friends helped fundraise for melanoma prevention. Bruce and Terri Geissmann (below) from Rainbow Beach Hardware, Fishing n Camping said the final count for the Pig Day Out was $7854.60, and included a wonderful $1500 from the Surf Club, all in memory of their daughter Kelly to fight melanoma. They send a huge big thank you to the businesses and families who gave their sponsorship and support, plus all the volunteers and workers on the day and to everyone who joined in the fun. (Ed: there were too many to list in the paper!).

More work delayed until Master Plan finalised by RB Residents & Ratepayers Association

He has emailed GRC and our local councillor, Mark McDonald, to ascertain who is responsible for its maintenance ( or lack thereof), and what can be done to have it upgraded, but has not received any reply despite a number of months having passed. Lost and Found Lastly, a small but significant issue. There is no permanent place at Rainbow Beach for people to take items they have found, or for

people to try to locate lost articles. This has been brought to the attention of the local police, who can see value in such a facility, but a decision to have a ‘Lost & Found’ at the Community Centre or elsewhere would require endorsement from a higher level . As a holiday destination, lost and found items are perhaps more prevalent than elsewhere. Hopefully, we will have such a facility in the short, rather than the long term. The next meeting of the association will be held at 7pm in the SES shed on 12 August 2014. All current and prospective residents and ratepayers are most welcome.

New information shelter Beach Exits We have been trying for a number of years to have the beach exit signs at Rainbow Shores replaced. Only one remains and it is badly rusted. So far, we have had no success. Earlier this year, we tried again, this time by contacting our local member, David Gibson. He obtained advice from the Minister for Environment and Heritage Protection who was of the opinion that the matter was the responsibility of the state as represented by the Department of Natural Resources and Mines (DNRM). He informed us that although it is not their responsibility, Gympie Regional Council (GRC)would be prepared to work with DNRM should the department decide to legitimise public access through this unallocated land. When we contacted the State Land Management Unit of DNRM,

they understood our concerns, but any decision about action is delayed until the Inskip Master Plan is finalised. We wish to thank David Gibson for his assistance and we are hopeful that we may be getting somewhere at last. Bullock Point A letter was sent to GRC about the neglected condition of Bullock Point, but we were informed that this is state land and that the council is also concerned and has asked the state government to develop it appropriately as part of the master plan. Path Hazards One of our members walks frequently on the tarmac path that runs past the golf course at Rainbow Shores. He has concerns about the potential hazards of roots that have broken through the surface in a

AINBOW BEACH Commerce and Tourism Association members voted in a new executive committee at a recent Extraordinary General Meeting. The new committee is made up of Mark Beech, Rainbow Ocean Palms Resort (President), Heatley Gilmore, Rainbow Beach Cooloola Coast Community News (Treasurer) and Tony Stewart, Rainbow Beach Fishing Charters (Secretary). Other committee members are Nigel Worthington from Rainbow Sea Resort and Jay Kent from Cafe Jilarty. President, Mark Beech said, “The focus of the new committee is to rebuild the association membership, to pay off the association’s debts and to work collaboratively with each other to promote the positive aspects of Rainbow Beach and ultimately attract more tourists to town.”

“Every business requires tourism to survive in Rainbow Beach and so it makes sense to work together to promote the town. The association does this through its website www.ourrainbowbeach.com.au and by representing businesses and leveraging off the efforts of local and regional tourism organisations. RBCT doesn’t have a huge amount of resources so we need to build partnerships with organisations and people that can help us achieve our goals.” The next meeting of the Rainbow Beach Commerce and Tourism Association will be held at the Community Hall on Tuesday, July 1 at 5pm. Locals saddened at golf course closure by Mary Cottam, Rainbow Shores Social Golf Club

T

HE MEMBERS of the Rainbow Shores Social Golf Club were both shocked and extremely disappointed to be advised on Friday June 13th that the owners of the Golf Course had taken the decision to close it, effective that day. No prior indication of the closure was given. In fact we were to hold the final round of our annual Club Championships the following Sunday, but were not given the opportunity to do so. The Social Golf Club has provided a regular steady income to The Shores Complex and the decision taken by the owners without any prior discussion or warning has had a poor impact on the people who supported their business over many years. The Rainbow Shores Social Golf Club was first formed by a group of men who met and played golf of a Friday afternoon. This was made possible by the then developer of Rainbow Shores, Kurt Krauchi, who built the course and was a great lover of golf. Kurt Krauchi, Joe Casey, Rodney Gray, and Peter Wallace were instrumental in getting the club off the ground. The first recorded President was S. Ferguson, Captain R. Tredwell and Treasurer J. Casey in the year 2003. First Secretaries were G. Adams and J. Casey in 2004 The club, over the years has donated money to many charities including RSL, MS, Epilepsy, Medical Transport and the Community Resource Centre. The club also donated money to skills training in golf for children at the Rainbow Beach State School.

Currently there are 60 members of the Cub. We have regular turnouts of 20 – 25 people for the Chook Run and Sunday games. On Tuesday mornings 10 – 12 ladies would play. The Shores course was a challenging Par3, many of the players preferred it to the larger courses. Sadly many of the members will not necessarily be able to continue to play golf on the larger and more distant courses. Golf was also the only sporting activity available to the ladies of Rainbow Beach. The closure will affect not only members, but other people in the community who

Gympie Cooloola Tourism hosts RB workshop July 15

T

HE INDUSTRY was buzzing after a standout evening held in Rainbow Beach at Gympie Cooloola Tourism’s third regional networking event. The event highlighted the achievements of the first half of 2014 with a multitude of projects delivered and partnerships developed by GCT in response to local industry feedback. The event was highly successful with Manager, Abbey Blanchfield presenting to current and prospective members the newly released online features and business support resources. Participation was strong with members of the Rainbow Beach Commerce and Tourism Association (RBCTA) attending after the election of new board members on the same evening. During the evening the GCT board and the new President of the RBCTA, Mark Beech facilitated a discussion on significant local tourism issues and agreed on a collaborative approach between Gympie Cooloola Tourism, RBCTA and the Rainbow Beach Progress Association to resolving them. Miss Blanchfield highlighted that GCT has worked for the past 18 months engaging with members and the industry, successfully delivering solutions to its members, identifying market requirements and setting key focuses for the 2014/15 year. The four Key Focuses for the year ahead are Business Development, Industry Development, Marketing and Promotion and Projects and Partners. Miss Blanchfield’s presentation highlighted the significant benefits of being a member of GCT and reminded attendees that the 2014/15 Membership Year was approaching. Rainbow Beach operators responded positively to the activities achieved and the future direction GCT was taking.

The next Rainbow Beach industry event will be a business management workshop ‘How to grow your business and have a life too’. Miss Blanchfield said the presenter, John O’Leary was renowned for his coaching style and it was vital to book seats for this high demand workshop. GCT partnerships allow the cost of attending to be significantly reduced to $15 said Miss Blanchfield, with the additional bonus of several hundred dollars of valuable business resources provided free to attendees. Rainbow’s lifesaving award night by Justin Schooth

AMES BOND was in town for the annual lifesaving awards dinner which kicked off with a veritable feast of 5 star cuisine in a very swanky 5 star setting setup and catered for by Brad and his staff at the supporters club. Dancing and frivolity was the call of the night as the lifesavers wound down after a long (but not arduous) season. Many a martini (shaken not stirred) was enjoyed whilst listening to the music of Mr Glen Fox . The annual dinner also gives the club a chance to recognize those members whose voluntary service goes above and beyond. Some of the award highlights for the night included our outgoing president Mr Ron Organ being awarded the Cliff Kuhn award for his dedication and service as an executive member, Courtney Hunter receiving the Peter Bagenquast award, Liam Gould and Tod Pooley as the best Junior and Senior members respectively, Mitch Nuske best junior patrol member, Stuart Wilson outstanding first year, Leah Schulz encouragement award, Karen Robertson best club member, Tumaka Read Champion Lifesaver, Mitch Neumann IRB Award, Emily Simpson harden up award, and last but not least Tony Chamberlain received the most coveted award, the Dunny Seat. Awards were also presented for those members who volunteered 100 + hrs on the beach over the season and to our long standing members for 20, 30 and 40 years of continuous service. A big thank you must also go to Joe Casey and the Rainbow Beach RSL for their presentation to the club and kind donation. We look forward our ongoing relationship with the RSL into the future. The lifesavers now have a few more months of quiet time before we provide

For someone who describes himself as having “been here forever” and “never lived anywhere else”, Peter is very humble about what he says is “only a small business”.

“Doing business in Australia, processing costs are through the roof - wages, fuel, electricity, we need long term cuts to stay competitive.”

As the interview finished, he admitted, “I feel like my head’s going a million miles an hour, there’s a boat coming in, a shipment leaving Sydney.....” Businessman Peter, was already concentrating on the next task at hand.

INETY GUESTS witnessed the marriage of Dave Elder and Carolyn Wall, against the backdrop of beautiful Rainbow Beach, last month. Carolyn’s sister, Sharon Clark from the Gold Coast was matron of honour and bridesmaid, Danielle Mountford ISHING AND OATING from Ipswich attended to the bride. Dave grew up with his best man Greg Waddell from Jandowie near Chinchilla and Groomsman Justin Turvey from Brisbane. Their children Tristan, April, Jack and Paige looked a picture in the bridal party. People travelled from all over to share in their day. Long time family friends GAS of the bride, Maria and Peter Dowson visited from the Carolyn’s birth place in Orange, NSW and the father of the bride journeyed from Port Macquarie, NSW. Friends Yoshe, Neil, Elliot and Jakson made the trip from as far north as Mackay. Their reception was held at Rainbow Beach Surf Club with entertainment by local musician Joel Mak. Despite breaking an ankle the day prior, and coping with crutches, Carolyn remained unruffled and was a beautiful bride. She said, “Dave and I have been together almost four years now and it was wonderful to join our two families together.” The honeymoon was placed on hold until their first wedding anniversary due to the new business, Rainbow Beach’s Roadside Assist program. Carolyn thinks that’s a good thing -considering the leg!

Dr Smith urges you to take life-saving bowel test

Q

UEENSLANDERS AGED 50 and over are being urged to screen for bowel cancer, with the launch of the state’s first ever TV campaign promoting the life-saving benefits of the National Bowel Cancer Screening Program. Developed by Cancer Council with funding from the Australian Government, the campaign follows a federal budget announcement that the free screening program will be fully implemented by July 2020 and offered to everyone aged 50 and over, every two years. Currently Queenslanders aged 50, 55, 60 and 65 are invited to screen by completing a simple faecal occult blood test that can be done at home. People aged 70 and 74 will be invited next year, with the remaining gaps in program coverage filled by July 2020. Local GP, Dr David Smith says, “Bowel cancer is such a well-known entity that the common symptoms are familiarunexplained abdominal pains, change in bowel habit and rectal blood. Once symptoms are apparent the tumour has probably spread from being confined to the lumen of the bowel to the outer surface.” Dr Smith emphasises that there is a need for early detection to make this a preventable disease, “Like melanoma, early diagnosis makes a huge difference to outcome.” “Incidence of most disease processes is a result of a combination of genetic and environmental factors. In the case of bowel cancer, having a first degree relative with the disease increases the risk times 2-3.

“However, Australia and New Zealand have the highest rates in the world with the appearance in under 50 year olds, too early for genetic influence and probably more environmental. Cancer Council Queensland spokesperson Katie Clift said bowel cancer was the state’s second biggest cancer killer, causing around 960 deaths per year, yet it was curable in around 90 per cent of cases if detected early. “Only 3 in 10 eligible Queenslanders are completing the test, but even on those figures the program is set to prevent more than 14,000 bowel cancer deaths in the state over the next 40 years,” Ms Clift said. “By increasing participation we would save many more lives. As with all cancers, it’s not just patients but grieving loved ones who can be profoundly affected. “It can be even more devastating for a cancer like bowel cancer, which is easy to treat if found early.

Lifestyle factors for bowel cancer: • A diet high in animal fats, sugar and alcohol is associated with increased risk. • Red and processed meat (but not fish or chicken) should be limited to <500G per week, although, grass-fed meat is relatively protective. • Alcohol should be restricted to the guidelines i.e. 2 standard drinks /day with 2 alcohol free days/week for males. • Diet should include a selection of 5 serves of vegetables /day, a serve = 1 cup. • It should also include at least 1 clove of garlic/day (5G) and a moderate intake of calcium, in dairy.

“We now have a program that can detect early-stage cases, so it’s up to eligible Queenslanders to take the test and dramatically reduce their risk.” Screening kits are mailed to all eligible Queenslanders. People aged over 50 who currently fall outside the target group, or anyone concerned about bowel cancer, should talk to their GP about bowel cancer screening. Dr Smith recommends locals take the test, “The Australian public health initiative of sending out stool testing kits has been successful but should probably be repeated every 2 years.” Bowel test kits can also be ordered from or are available at selected pharmacies. “The gold standard for the detection of bowel cancer is the colonoscopy and this should follow any positive stool test for the presence of occult blood. Discuss this with your GP.”

Local members of the Queensland Wader Study Group count shorebirds on roost sites around the bay every month. Migratory shorebirds return to the same roost site year after year. Counting the birds regularly and then Bookkeeping comparing the counts over time gives a good idea of how successful the breeding season has been up in the northern hemisphere and also how the birds have managed on their long flights north and then south again. Unfortunately, shorebird numbers are declining every year but each year we see a similar mix of birds on each of the roost sites. However, there is one bird that I have not seen for a couple of years. Terek Sandpipers have only been found on one site south of Inskip Point and I have not seen them on this site for some time. They roost in mangrove trees with Grey-tailed Tattlers. When they are roosting they both tuck their heads under their wings. Because they are very similar in size and both grey and white coloured they are very difficult to identify. If they pull

their heads out from under their wings then it is easy! Grey-tailed Tattlers have straight bills and Terek Sandpipers have up-curved bills.

All For About some timeBookkeeping I have been hoping to get close views of these birds but each time I approach their roost they fly off to the other side of the bay before I can get my binoculars up or my camera focused on them. This last week was different. The birds stayed sitting on the branches and I was able to photograph them. There are still Terek Sandpipers mixed in with the Grey-tailed Tattlers! From what I saw before the birds flew off approximately a quarter of the flock were Terek Sandpipers. This time they flew off because a Tern flew too close over their roosting tree! HE AUTHOR of the letter to editor, Lionel Ching was a Dugong Fisherman. This account follows on from last month’s story on the wreck of the Daphne. J Lionel Ching, Letter to Editor. March 15,1893. Maryborough chronicle Sir,-- I have just read in your issue of the 25th.,ultimo,. the survivers account of the Daphne, and in justice to myself I shall feel oblidged if you will kindly insert the following: “A Patience boarded the ‘Moeeyan’ at 2pm on Saturday11th ultimo. His account of his miraculous escape which he repeated to Mrs Ching and myself is as follows:- I was at the wheel, when we took the Bar; another man was with me but got frightened and left me; when she struck the Bar, I was thrown into the main rigging; all the rest had previously taken shelter there; I got jambed, but as she again heeled over I freed myself and jumped overboard just in time to see her turn keel up; after a few moments, I got held of the binnacle-stand, and shortly after another small board; these I kept pushing before me and swimming all the time till I got in smoother water; I tried to reach the inner leading light, Inskip, but the tide carried me up the Bay. At daylight I saw a large piece of wreckage, which I made for. It was a portion of the deck-house and had a raised part on it; I was able to get on it and sit down; at about 6a.m. I sighted the Moeeyan; she is moored a little over a mile inside the mouth of Kauri Creek; I said, “If I can only reach that vessel I shall be allright”; but the tide carried me past the creek and out of sight of the ship. I stranded on the mainland above the creek and walked on shore; after cooeeing and seeing no one I returned to the raft and again let her drift; The ebb tide again took me past the creek but the young flood carried me into it and drifted me alongside the Moeeyan; I had no means of steering thereaft; The Moeeyan is fully three miles from the mainland at Inskip Point. As soon as I got on board I was surprised to find no one there (Mr Ching has been living ashore for the last few months); As I had let the raft go adrift, I at once jumped overboard and swam ashore.” The writer in the meantime had gone down to a small creek where the boats are moored and was on my way on board when I heard my wife cooeeing. I sent my little boy up to see what she required. He returned and said there was a man shipwrecked. Of course I went up at once.

“Alec Patience informed me he had only been in the colonies three years, and this was the third time he had been wrecked.” Mrs Ching had clothed and given him grog, and he was sitting down eating. He informed me he never once despaired, but felt confident of being picked up. He was slightly off his head and badly sunburnt; he said he fancied there was another man on the raft and kept calling out to him; he was also singing. One hears and reads of hairbreadth escapes, but I think this is a truly miraculous one. Alec Patience informed me he had only been in the colonies three years, and this was the third time he had been wrecked. The next day (Sunday) it was blowing a gale. I told him as soon as the weather lifted I would run him down to Inskip as I explained to him that my partner with workhands and the larger boats were at work in Herveys

Bay; that I was alone and it was not safe to go in a small boat. He said he should like to see the Bay so at noon he and I walked to the outside beach. I showed him the Bar and Inskip. We came across several pieces of wreckage, and later on a lot of bags of flour and some tins of kerosene, two cases and a cask of apples. These with the exception of the flour, the Custom House authorities have. We returned to dinner at 3pm. It was raining torrents at the time. I did not wish to go out again, but Patience continually said. “If you do not mind the rain, I don’t,” so at 5pm we put on oilskins and went in a skiff to bring in five bags and six tins. On Monday it was still blowing too hard to go to Inskip. So at Patience’s own suggestion we then went out for a short time and got another load, he remarking, “I would much rather see you have it than anyone else.” In the afternoon he lent me a hand to lift some flour. On Tuesday I took him to Inskip; It was a strong head-wind to beat back, and I knew we should ship a lot of water; he returned with me to bale. On Wednesday at noon I put him on board the pilot-boat,

and he proceeded to Inskip; I informed him previously I was very sorry I could not give him more clothes as I had not been to town for twenty months and have given the [local inhabitants] all I could, remaining myself short. I offered him a pair of dress trousers but his legs were so painful from sun blisters, he preferred the flannel ones. He remarked, “I have to thank Mrs Ching and yourself for your great kindness to me, which I shall never forget. I don’t suppose I will ever be able to do you a good turn, but if you ever come to Sydney I hope you will look my friends up and let them thank you.” He seemed to be most thankful. Both Mrs Ching and myself treated him as one of ourselves and did our best to make him comfortable. I wish to point out that there was no compulsion use by me. It was purely an accident my going outside the creek and naturally when I saw the wreckage I pulled a few bags of flour above high water mark and Patience of course being with me lent a hand. This was as thrilling as the summary sounds, I thoroughly enjoyed it as a good bit of escapist reading. It is the first time I have read any of James Phelan’s adult fiction, he came to my attention through his thriller adventures for teen readers.

Music and mirth in Cooloola Cove

Phelan takes his inspiration from some of his favourite authors like Tom Clancy, Vince Flynn and Lee Child, but he is not in their league yet. The story was fast paced with plenty of action and a couple of interesting twists, but there was nothing very new or particularly inventive to distinguish it from a lot of other novels in this geo-political spy thriller genre. Is Jed Walker a threat to Jack Reacher? I very much doubt it, but he’s a good character worth developing in further action thrillers for a bit of escapist excitement.

S THE PEOPLE crowded through the door we wondered if we’d have enough room for them all, but as usual, they were anxious not to be late and miss anything. We had a great night, with some new, some old, some borrowed and no one was blue! The programme began with music from the Walt Disney film “Jungle Book”, when the monkeys all monkey around, which is most appropriate, don’t you think? Some serious music was sung by young Emily Sawrey, singing in French and also from “The Mikado” by Gilbert and Sullivan. What a voice and how wonderful it is to hear her. Our Continuity Man was in fine form and kept us from waiting for things to happen when instruments and chairs have to be moved etc. As usual there were a plethera of guitars but with some very talented people playing them so we just enjoyed their music. Colleen was missed for her funny stories but thank goodness she is recovering from a serious setback. Len’s harmonica had good use and a few tears were shed. He played two songs made famous by Diana Ross, “Touch Me In The Morning” and “For Once In My Life”. We had two poems in various accents by Terry Tebble and the blue grass group had our feet tapping. Over the last month I have become a victim of a clever ‘Eastern European’ scam whilst out shopping. Simply dropping into Coles supermarket for a bit of shopping turned out to be quite an experience. Don’t be naive enough to think it couldn’t happen to you or your friends! Here’s how the scam works: Two very good-looking 20-21 year-old girls come over to your car as you are packing your shopping into the boot. They both start cleaning your windscreen, their breasts almost falling out of their skimpy T- shirts. When you thank them and offer them a tip, they’ll say ‘No’ and instead they ask you for a lift to another supermarket, in my case, Woolies. You agree and they both get in the back seat. On the way there, they start undressing, until both are completely naked. HAT MAGIC WEATHER we are having! We came back to Rainbow Beach in the middle of June in time for some beautiful days - crisp mornings and warm, sunny days - wonderful. We were blessed with amazingly good weather in Tasmania last month. There was only one day that we were a little edgy about the weather. Coming out from between 2 hills just north of Hobart, the gusty, wild wind made the car do a little dance across the road - scary! We couldn’t get out of Hobart fast enough! We headed west to Queenstown and Strahan for a beautiful cruise up the Gordon River. For the locals, we caught up with Adrian and Trish Patterson and they taught us to ‘saunter’. We made our kids laugh when we told them we had set a new record. We had taken all day to go 50kms and our average speed for the day was 28km/h slightly different to our trip across to Perth at 700kms a day. The joy of travelling is catching up with fellow travellers we have met on other occasions. We met up with Kerry and Rino who have been friends for more than 8 years at their beautiful home up in the hills near Deloraine (northern Tasmania). We took this photo at their place and called it “big and little Merc” (both with Saturn Antennas). They had their bus out to get ready for a trip to Victoria for a working holiday. And it wasn’t all holiday mode for

us. We contacted Kris and Caroline from Digital & Satellite Services in Ulverstone. They were very impressed with the new folding satellite dish that we sell - as well as the Saturn Antennas. They are our now Saturn Antenna dealers in Tasmania. With our sign-written car, we are often flagged down by travellers. Ulverstone was one of those occasions. The travellers were having trouble with their TV reception. We introduced them to Kris and Caroline who immediately made an appointment to see them the next day. When we returned, I was asked what my favourite spot was in Tassie. It was hard to pinpoint one particular spot -there are some amazingly, beautiful places there AND with so much history. Coastcare visits rare patterned fens T

HE WATER monitoring programme has completed its first round. Volunteers from Tin Can Bay, Cooloola Cove and Rainbow Beach have visited their pre selected sites with state of the arts ‘Horiba’ water testing meter with electronic readouts. These are entered on a form, and saved on the meter, very clever. Sarah (pictured) and I enjoyed the Patterned Fens, which lie to the west of the rubbish dump. Very rare and delicate, they are named because viewed from the air patterns of the pools within the wallum are clear to see. The water is in small pools filled with reeds, surrounded by insecure (wobbly) rims with a different reed growing in water logged sand and humus. The water is fresh. We could not get far, as we had to flatten the thick growth to get anywhere and it was slippery and we did not want to damage the plants too much. We live in such a varied environment in this area, and we try to preserve these unique places.

ELL OVER the last month the weather for going offshore has either been brilliant, or just terrible as numerous highs have produced very strong Southeasters, but producing only slight swell. It now looks like the Souwesters are starting, so offshore fishing should fire up, as water temperatures start to drop. Offshore catches have improved towards the end of June after a slow start to the month. Snapper are appearing and along with Parrot, Moses Perch, Hussar, Gold Spot Wrasse,and Pearl Perch have been our major catches. Pearl Perch have dominated catches on the closer reefs, with Snappery Squire also appearing in better numbers. Scarlet Sea Perch, Sweetlip and Moses Perch have also been making up our catch from the inshore reefs. In closing I must mention the retirement of Senator Ron Boswell and what a great loss he will be to many of us as he has been such a great advocate for the Fishing industry. You may remember the proposed Fraser Island AFFA ,well he fought so hard to restrict the Labour Government and Greens proposed closures, not only here but Australia wide. The last time I met the Senator was at the Clontarf Rally where he spoke so well. He has been a fare dinkum hard working Aussie, so if you get the chance to thank him—DO. ‘Til next month-good fishing!

ESPITE A LITTLE rain the past week has been fantastic weather with glassed out days on the bay. School mackerel and queenfish are active around Big Mick although only the odd legal sized specimen amongst them. Longtail tuna have been working the channel between Inskip and Fraser. There has been plenty of bait schools about so make sure to pack a few bait jigs. Flathead are active throughout the Straits with the bigger models coming from the western side of Fraser Island. Flathead are being caught in good numbers with several reports of quality fish over the 50cm mark. For the bait anglers try pilchards or white bait if you’re in a rush however if you have time to gather a few live baits of diver whiting, herring or poddy mullet these tend to end up producing A happybetter quality fish. Soft plastics or hard bodied lures worked punter with around the drop offs a couple of hours a Squire either side of low tide are also worth a try. Creeks such as Teebar, Carlo and Kauri are good options although Bullock Point and Pelican Bay are also worth a look. Once you find where the fish are holding keep working that area as chances are there will be a couple of fish schooling up. Diver whiting are being caught in front of Tin Can Bay in 5-7m of water with worms and freshly pumped yabbies working best. Squid are still being caught in the same area and pays to keep a rod setup with a jig as they will often be seen following up your baits and lures. The odd Barra is still skulking about with

Hang Gliding & Paragliding Carlo Sand Blow is one of the top spots for hand gliders in Queensland with the National Championships being held there each January. With a take off of 300ft and a soarable ridge of 12 kilometres long and about 500ft high, Carlo Sand Blow is definitely the place to go. Fliers should be of Hang2 standard, fly in north easterly winds and remember landing in the bathing reserve is prohibited. Lake Freshwater Only accessible by 4WD, Tour or Walking. Walking tracks starts at the Bymien picnic area. The round trip from Rainbow Beach will take a full day and requires fitness. Foreshore Tin Can Bay You can walk 4km from Crabs Creek to Norman Point, over picturesque bridges, signage of flora and fauna, through mangroves, playgrounds and outdoor gyms. You are welcome to our Regatta weekend on Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th July at the Tin Can Bay Yacht Club. Saturday morning is racing between the Wide Bay clubs, 1770, Bundaberg, Hervey Bay and Cooloola. Then after 12pm we are holding a novelty event, “The Diamond Dash for Cash”. Come along and see what it is all about. On Sunday, we host the “Sleepy Lagoon Sports Regatta” ISHING AND OATING with teams from the Sunshine Coast, Brisbane and Gold Coast vying for honours. Unfortunately Qld Transport is in the process of creating more parking at Norman Point and will probably not be ready for the influx. If you are in walking distance of Norman Point why not take a stroll and enjoy the walk to spectate. Car parking will be at a premium and our local SES will control the traffic flow and direct you to alternative parking if needed. Please do not park in Boat / Trailer parking bays.
