HANK YOU everyone for the extremely warm welcome! It’s been an incredible month catching up with old friends, meeting so many new energetic business owners, and mingling with the backpackers and tourists.

The IRB Ocean Roar carnival was a fantastic success and although Sunday was a bit wet...Saturday was perfect.

Big shout out to all the volunteers who made the day go like clockwork. More in full roundup inside.

I had the pleasure of meeting the Tin Can Bay Treadlies who also volunteer with Sailability.

Eds Beach Bakery Pies are now famous Australia Wide, go and see what all the fuss is about. Congratulations and more in the story.

Great to meet Norma and the volunteers and also Patch and friends and I was amazed at how many tourists come in daily just to see the dolphins, a great drawcard for the region.

The Fishing Comp is the big news on July’s calendar for Rainbow Beach - such a huge event for the region and so many involved in its success. The organisers are in full swing and Kroppy tells us all about it in the full article. Good luck to all fisherpeople!

So many highlights this month; the outstanding winter weather, perfect beach driving conditions, a visit to most of the coffee houses in the region - all five star, more to visit next month and WHALES - they are on the move!

Great news: Tin Can Bay Library will now have a JP rostered on Monday, Wednesday and Friday of each week between 9 - 12.30pm.

Les Lee Park gets a facelift

The new bridge will be ready for use by the end of 2020

T

IN CAN BAY’S Les Lee Park is popular with families all year round and now it is set to have a facelift.

Five existing shelters will be replaced with three larger shelters. The new shelters are designed to cater for groups of families, friends and community organisations under the one roof.

The two larger shelters will be 8m x 5m to allow for two settings and a double plate barbecue under one roof, and the third shelter will be 6m x 5m, with no barbecue.

The placement of the shelters allows for future improvements, include a widened pedestrian and cycle path which is an extension of the path improvements along Toolara Esplanade.

ORK IS UNDERWAY to deliver a new $2 million facility to house auxiliary FRS firefighters and SES. “The complex is in the design stage, but land has been purchased and work will be ready to move ahead with the

“The new fire station will replace the old facility and recognises the growth in this area.”

Coondoo Creek Bridge construction has begun!

T

HE DEPARTMENT of Transport and Main Roads have started construction works to replace the timber bridge at Coondoo Creek on Tin Can Bay Road.

The project involves constructing a raised three-span concrete structure and new approaches. The new structure will be wider and built on a new and improved alignment to the west of the existing timber structure.

The new bridge will be safer, more reliable, better suited to the vehicle types and volumes currently using it and will reduce the need for ongoing maintenance.

Preconstruction works (translocating endangered flora from the area and some vegetation clearing for utility service relocations) were completed in August 2018.

RoadTek will deliver the construction of the project, with traffic expected to be using the new bridge by late 2020, weather permitting. Once completed, the 60km/h posted speed limit at the bridge will be returned to 100km/h.

The $14.8 million project is jointly funded under Round Six of the Australian Government’s Heavy Vehicle Safety and Productivity Program, with the Australian Government providing $5 million, and the Queensland Government $9.8 million.

As Coondoo Creek is an environmentally sensitive area, with the presence of federaland state-listed aquatic fauna, construction works will be carefully programmed to minimise impacts to the aquatic fauna within the creek.

The new bridge will be constructed offline so minimal travel disruptions are anticipated throughout construction.

Construction vehicles will be travelling in and out of the worksite. Please remember to slow down, adhere to the reduced speed limit and follow traffic control instructions for your safety and the safety of road workers.

The beautiful Rainbow Beach winter months are upon us and now the rain has stopped we have been enjoying some clear and calm days on the ocean.

For the first four days of Humpback whale sightings Wolf Rock Divers were lucky enough to see them on scuba too!

Either whilst hanging on the descent line on the way in or on their ascent and swim back to the boat.

The sub adult whales we have been seeing are super curious and circle the boat, even swimming off and doubling back to have another look at the divers.

HE QUEENSLAND Government is seeking input from the community on the type of eco-tourism services and facilities that could be offered to bush walkers travelling the 102km Cooloola Great Walk trail.

The Cooloola Great Walk is a walking and camping experience that links Noosa North Shore with Rainbow Beach.

The services and facilities being considered by the State Government include low-impact eco-accommodation, guided tours and additional bushwalking experiences.

Cr Mark McDonald said that with around three quarters of the Cooloola Great Walk falling within the Gympie region, it’s important that our residents speak up and have their say.

“This walk is a great asset to our community and it’s enjoyed by locals and visitors alike,” said Cr McDonald.

“We need our communities to know about this consultation activity being conducted by the State Government and to speak up to have their voices heard.”

The Grey Nurse sharks had moved off the rock into deeper water but are now back in the main shark gutter in large numbers with a northerly current bringing some needed warm water and clear 30m vis!

Water temp is now 21 degrees at Wolf Rock- sounds warm, feels cold- but bearable with our 7mm wetsuits and hot soup on board!

HERE HAS BEEN no sighting of the interloper who has caused Patch to retreat on several occasions, so Mystique and Patch seem to be happy swimming together again. We have had glorious weather with all four adult dolphins coming in to feed with the two calves, Luna and Joe. The calves have been really active lately and causing their mums some concern with their playful stints. The water temperature is quite good and we volunteers only feel cold when the wind picks up.

The dolphins’ volunteers can be in the water from 6.30am until feed time which is at 8am.

Our new volunteers who are going through the paces to become a fully fledged dolphin volunteers are enjoying the interaction with the dolphin.

If you are interested in dolphins and wish to volunteer, please contact one of the co-ordinators at the Centre. After an interview and a three month training program to assess your suitability, you can

Remember local residents who visit the centre only have to pay for the feeding and not pay entry.

Unfortunately we have to say goodbye to Chris Rogers who has been a dolphin volunteer and a gatekeeper for some time. She starts a new adventure as she moves to her son’s property near Gin Gin. Good luck Chris, you will be missed.

OCALS ALWAYS knew Ed’s Beach Bakery pies were awesome, but now they have been made famous by being voted No 1 by Creek to Coast’s ‘Pie Connoisseur’.

The show’s cameraman, Jed, said he has “covered all the states of Australia with his job, every outback bakery you can think of, and has basically been on a never-ending quest to find the best pie there is out there.”

Jed narrowed down his top 10 pies he’s come across during his travels and number one on his list was Rainbow Beach’s own Ed’s Beach Bakery which scored a whopping 10 out of 10.

He said: “It’s one of the first stops as you drive into Rainbow Beach and opens at 4 am – tick and tick.”

And while Jed’s normally a steak, cheese and bacon kind of guy, at Ed’s it’s the corn beef and cheese sauce pie that seals the deal for him. He doesn’t even mind the sixhour round trip from Brisbane just to land himself one.

Camps Australia Wide have featured their favourite, the Corn Beef and White Sauce pie, on their website recently and said: “It just happens to be my favourite pie, at our local bakery. I don’t eat a pie very often – when I do have an urge for one, this is where I go!”

F YOU NOTICED some weird self-propelled watercraft around the waters of Rainbow, Double and Inskip this month there was a reason for that and they are pleased you noticed.

The board which raised a lot of eyebrows and camera lenses were the Flite Boards. An electric hydrofoil which flies over the top of the water requiring no wind at all, and it looked like a lot of fun!

Two famous faces were amongst the surfers testing out the new equipment, four times world champion Keahi De Aboitiz and world renowned athlete Moona Whyte, a three times world champ - both are familiar with our region.

Ocean Peak International were the hosts and spokesperson Alan Saunders said: “We choose a different location each year and have in the past stayed

in Mauritius and Maui. As well as it’s obvious beauty, Rainbow Beach is central for all our clients who can access it easily, flying into the Sunshine Coast airport and a two-hour drive.”

Their guests flew in from all corners of Australia to check out all the latest and greatest kite surfers, windsurfers, and stand up paddle boards, which are all under wraps until the start of the next season when they will be on sale.

The company represents Neilpryde, Cabrinha and JP-Australia and the Flite Boards which you saw are the only ones not under wraps - they are available and in the market now.

Hudson Godfrey-Smith co-owner said:” Our goal is to make the sport accessible, anything that gets people to enjoy themselves on the water is a win.”

Meet the Tin Can Bay Treadlies T

HE SPORT OF cycling has been popular in Europe for decades and remains a major part of the culture with many using this mode of transport as an efficient, frugal, environmentally safe way to travel.

While Australia has been slower to adopt the sport, one group of energetic and enthusiastic cyclists have been meeting up to three times a week to ride, socialise and participate in the sport they love.

Two decades ago locals Alan Jones and Roy Yeeles were regular riders in the area and in June 2010 June Grimmett sent out an email suggesting they should ride together as a social group, and so The Tin Can Bay Treadlies was formed.

The Treadlies are a healthy group of men and women who love the opportunity to ride in this amazing region. They also travel around Noosa, Cooran, Pomona, Kin Kin and often compete outside the area at events such as the 100 km cycle raising money for MS. One of their special rides is the ride along the beach to Double Island Point and back on their mountain bikes at low tide.

Wherever they go they enjoy trying out the local cafes and love to meet the locals.

With decades of riding experience between them, the riders comprise a mix of professions, ages, abilities, personalities and fitness levels; all with a good story to tell.

The riders are aged from the baby at 51 to the eldest who will be 80 in a few months, and love the sport for its camaraderie as much as the opportunity to stay fit and keep their bodies physically active.

Ex Pro Cyclist, Allen Pooley, and wife Carol are new residents to Tin Can Bay, and says: “I have been riding for years but up here it is heaven, no traffic, and really good riding compared to Gold Coast.”

The riders meet most Mondays, Wednesdays, and on the weekends and ride from 3 to 80 kilometres depending on their experience, skill and fitness

level and would love others of all abilities to join them.

They have two groups - a team for beginners and a format for riders wanting more of a challenge.

“All you need to join is a bike and a helmet. It’s not just for fitness, it has a great social side too,” said Alan.

They did agree there is confusion with the road rules but agree drivers are predominantly courteous and happy to share the road.

Teacher Kerry Jenkins said: “Overwhelmingly people are polite and considerate which they appreciate.

Everybody in the group makes an effort to be visible.”

The rule for drivers when passing cyclists is to allow 1m when passing a bicycle rider in a 60km/h or less speed zone or 1.5m where the speed limit is over 60km/h.You may cross the double white lines without penalty. ULY MARKS THE two-year anniversary of an accident that changed many lives.

Tristan Sik, a local teenager, had a push bike accident, and was saved by two things – the first responder Marc - and the speed with which LifeFlight Rescue Helicopter transported him to the Lady Cilento hospital.

COOLABAY CHOIR

A memorial exhibition, using watercolours of local flora and fauna by late well-known and eccentric artist Dorothy Hall, is coming to the Gallery on Saturday 29 June.

From nuts, flowers, fungi, birds and butterflies to lungfish, you will find magic in each of the artworks.

This colourful exhibition is presented for the first time on this scale by the De Greene Art Trust and will be on view until 20 July.

Coolabay Choir is enjoying new songs, singing confidently in harmony and looking forward to the next performance date.

Singing is very therapeutic as well as giving the brain a bit of a workout!

Knowing the words to songs and each individual part of the harmony is a feat in itself and very commendable indeed.

Entry time for the art show

The Cooloola Coast Art Group are once again looking forward to showcasing the works of many talented artists in our local region.

A 3D section will add a new dynamic to this year’s show and the Junior section has returned by popular demand, so send those entries in!

Over a 120 works of a variety of mediums will be on display and admission is adults $2, children under 10 years old, free.

We are very excited that our judge this year is a much awarded Sunshine Coast artist, Lizzie Connor. Lizzie has completed 20 solo exhibitions throughout her career and is a member of the Australian Society of Marine Artists and Royal Qld Art Society.

The annual art show and competition will be held over the weekend of July 26-28, at the Tin Can Bay Country Club, our major sponsor, who host a Chinese restaurant that will be open for lunch and dinner.

STUDIO TRAILS The Studio Trails was a great success for 2019 with two local studios opening their doors for guests for the second year.

over 90 visitors through the doors over the weekend and Phil Horne of Blue Sands of Rainbow Beach also enjoyed the chance to show off his work.

Music Plus and a wonderful treat The evening started well with Side Saddle, made famous by the pianist Russ Conway in the ‘70s. In Gunther’s absence, Ron stepped in and did us proud.

After our first ‘singalong’, Laurence gave us two great numbers and followed with a well-known Maori song, first in Maori then English, Now is the hour, which many of us knew.

The violin was played by a relative beginner, Fiona, though very competently.

Frank and Marilyn gave us a taste of their recent performance at the Gympie Show as did the ukuleles, looking like Country and Western folk.

Coolabay Choir had fun singing All God’s Creatures Have a Place in the Choir and a beautiful round from John Krumm called Fall.

Gail came again to play for us, which was heartily enjoyed. Ron not only played in the band, but also gave us two songs with guitar in his inimitable style and managed the sound system very ably. We thank him for that.

We laughed with Colleen and her funny story and we were pleased to hear Sarah’s Irish lilt. Debbie, Len and Pam gave a rendition of Hard To Say I’m Sorry; it was interesting to hear how the tenor recorder and the flute blended together with piano only an accompaniment.

Highlight of the evening was young Chloe, who gave us a lively performance of The Entertainer by Scott Joplin on violin

with Vivi, her Mum, accompanying her, as well as Chloe on cello in the last items of the evening. Chloe is 15 years old, has completed all her school studies and is already embarking on a university degree course online.

We shall watch with interest her progress and, no doubt, see and hear a lot more from her.

What an event!

AINBOW BEACH recently hosted Round 4 of the ‘Ocean Roar’ IRB Premiership Series. Beach and Club President, Shane Handy, said despite the conditions the event was a great success.

The carnival saw 259 competitors from 16 clubs across Queensland from Coolum Beach in the north to Kirra SLSC in the south compete.

Who is a photographer?

HE AVAILABILITY and increasing sophistication of digital cameras and smartphone cameras has seen an explosion in photography participation in recent years, and it seems that anyone who owns a camera (regardless of what type) can call themselves a photographer. But in this day and age, what exactly is a “photographer”?

Traditionally, when we think of a photographer, we think of professional photographers - wedding or portrait photographers, sports photographers or photo-journalists – who have undertaken many years of study to be qualified in the art. Some charge large sums of money for their services, while others are freelance, but all earn a living from their chosen genre of photography.

At the other end of the scale we have the “enthusiastic amateurs” Many are self-taught, having taken advantage of the vast amount of learning videos and courses available online. A leaf through photography pages and groups on social media reveals that there is a vast range of abilities from the happy snapper to the “OMG, what an awesome photo!”

If you’re an enthusiastic amateur wanting to improve your knowledge and skills, one of the best ways to achieve this is by joining a camera/ photography club.

Apart from hanging out with like-minded people, you can immerse yourself in a learning environment – learn how to get the most out of your camera (whatever kind you have) and learn how to use photo editing software.

Clubs cater for varying levels of ability. They

provide the means to explore various genres and gain exposure to other photographers which can be very inspiring. Who knows? Maybe one day you may even be able to call yourself a “photographer”!

If you’re struggling with your photography, maybe joining your local club is something worth considering.

US and Canadian visitors love Rainbow Beach!

OUR ENDURANCE young riders along with their two sponsors came to Australia from the US and Canada to take part in an International Endurance Ride Exchange.

It’s sort of like a student exchange but only for one event, a 50 mile endurance ride that was to be held near Eidsvold on the Rockybar property on June 8.

This exchange is an arrangement between the American Endurance Ride Conference and the Queensland Endurance Riders Association.

On the first trip to Australia in 2016, the young riders requested to go and ride horses on the beach. So arrangements were made to ride on Rainbow Beach.

They loved the clean beach, the views, the forestry drive, the people and the coloured sands.

The young riders had so much fun riding these very well-trained horses that when

they heard another group was planning on going to Australia again this year they highly recommended to this group of riders to go to Rainbow Beach and ride.

The young riders were so excited as they

galloped along in the surf. They had the time of their lives and they will always remember Rainbow Beach. The photos and experience will be something that they will always cherish.

Cooloola Coast Pilates has started pilates classes on Mondays 8.45 to 10.15am at the spacious hall, with Sarah Booth instructing.

Sarah is also going to start a Gold Pilates and Exercise Chair Class from July 15 at 10.30 to 11.15am for seniors and for people

of any age but with movement restrictions.

The class will be around a chair either sitting on it or using it as exercising tool.

Coming up in October there is a light show exhibit, ‘Playground’, organised by Team Rainbow and supported by the Community Centre. It will be held from October 5 - 8, and further information will be out soon from Team Rainbow Association.

Cooloola Coastcare’s Weed Warriors plant trees for Climate Week

by Jess Milne, held a public information and re-vegetation event on Thursday June 6 on the Tin Can Bay foreshore park to celebrate the first Queensland Climate Week.

This event was sponsored by the Queensland Government through the Burnett Mary Regional Group, and the Weed Warriors are supported by a Gympie Regional Council’s Environment Levy Grant.

Members of the community and visitors from as far afield as Glenwood joined Coastcare in replanting an area along the creek. They were rewarded with a cuppa and a cake after planting native plants in the areas cleared of weeds over the past months.

They were able to get information about the local plants and weeds by taking home a ‘Great Sandy Beauties and Beasties’ booklet and a ‘Cooloola Cove Wetlands and Waterways’ book published by Coastcare.

The group of 11 locals and visitors planted over a 100 native plants recommended by the Coastal Manager from the Gympie Regional Council’s Environment Department. The plants were purchased from the local Cooloola City Farm Native Plant Nursery where these local species are raised from locally gathered seeds.

HE GRASS TREE (Xanthorrhoea) is an iconic and eye-catching plant readily seen in our local heath.

Grass trees have a thick, corky trunk either above or below ground and the long, narrow, spiky leaves form the crown at the top of the trunk.

This is often said to resemble a grass skirt. The dramatic flower spike has white/cream flowers, followed by seed capsules containing hard, black, oval seeds. They are very slow growing, but do not have to be fully grown to look interesting in a garden.

Grass trees have highly flammable leaves, but the trunk is watery, so the tree can survive most bushfires and flowering is most prolific after them. This may be life-saving for birds and insects.

All varieties in Queensland are protected and it is illegal to remo ve them from their habitat.

Our plant of the month is Xanthorrhoea johnsonii (Forest or Wallum grasstree). It has It is illegal to remove the an aerial trunk Grass Tree from their habitat to a few metres and will enjoy a sunny position that must be well drained.

HANKS TO TWO very kind community members who have recently donated a planer and a metal lathe, the Tin Can Bay Community and Men’s Shed Inc. is now very close to having all the equipment the Shed needs.

During June, members of the Shed Management Committee met in Gympie for a round table discussion with Council’s Planning Department, headed by Councillor Mark McDonald.

This meeting proved very fruitful with a lot of headway being made and matters of concern being resolved.

The Council were very helpful in

every respect and, with the Shed now having the services of a draftsperson assisting with internal shed plans and disability parking plans, the Men’s Shed is moving forward strongly again.

HE COOLOOLA COAST Local Ambulance Committee would like to acknowledge two very generous donations which were recently received.

The first was from the Tin Can Bay Quilters with a cheque for the handsome sum of $1100. The money was raised by the Quilters during a special event in May which was very successful and attracted a large attendance.

The club has been most supportive of the Ambulance Service in the past, both with donations and with participation in our annual Flower Show.

The second equally welcome donation was from the Sleepy Lagoon Hotel Sports and Social Club. They donated $500 as a contribution to the work of our local Ambulance Officers. The club had also donated a further $500 earlier in the financial year.

The LAC is very grateful for the efforts of both these organisations and the financial support which they have shown now and in the past. The money will be put to good use to provide specialised equipment for both the Tin Can Bay and Rainbow Beach Ambulance Stations.

Over 60s test out the Mary Valley Rattler

RECENT Thursday saw our excited group head to Gympie for our long-awaited trip on the Rattler. Of course, the morning started off with a lovely morning tea at the station first, then it was all aboard.

The group excitedly waiting to board.

We felt like kids on their first train ride. It was very interesting to see the countryside from a different perspective. Our conductor, Michelle, gave us a running commentary and history of the region’s as we clickity-clacked along the track.

Finally we pulled into Amamoor Station, where we had lunch at the little cafe; then back on board and homeward bound.

A thoroughly enjoyable day. Our next morning coffee meeting will be July 2 at the Rainbow Beach Surf Club, at 10am.

Have an enjoyable and safe holiday

HANK YOU FOR a great term. The support that our families and citizens give our school is such an important aspect of our success. Our time can be spent on the important aspects of teaching and learning, student engagement, and student and staff wellbeing.

Holidays are always a great antidote for staff wellbeing. We are constantly planning, developing and implementing ideas to ensure that the students of Rainbow Beach State School are achieving their best in all aspects of their school life.

Last week, our school won the Sea Life Sleepover Competition for the Sunshine Coast. Mrs C entered our montage of fish, co-constructed by the students and Mrs Lane. This fish scene is on the back wall of the undercover area and is a colourful, recycled masterpiece. A great reward for the students’ and Mrs Lane’s hard work. Thank you to Mrs C for taking the time to enter the competition.

The student council provided the opportunity for the students of Rainbow Beach State School to chill out and watch the movie The Grinch last month. During the interval, students were served up a

delightful feast of hot dogs and a cold popper. A great Friday night meal! At the drop off, it was great to see so many happy parents’ faces and their smiles grew wider when I told them they didn’t have to stay.

I must congratulate the members of the student council who wrote to businesses asking if they would support the night with a small donation and phoned the businesses to order. The student council is raising money to replace some of the bench seats in the undercover area with lighter aluminium seats.

According to the students, the old heavy seats are a WPH&S issue, as they could cause back problems when lifting them or there is a possibility of getting a splinter in your bottom when sitting on them. Who am I to argue! The Rainbow Beach State School P&C are going to match dollar for dollar to buy the seats.

Our Year 6 students had a Cyber Safety talk with our visiting Student Engagement teacher Mrs A. Mrs A discussed the legal requirements of having various social media

WO YEARS AGO, owner of the highly regarded Kids Bizz Early Education Centre in Gympie, Julie Waters, decided she wasn’t busy enough, so she took over the existing child-care service in Trevally Street, Tin Can Bay. She heard that the struggling childcare centre was closing and couldn’t let that happen. She said: “I call it my heart decision.”

She has had the inside completely gutted, added air conditioning, soundproofing and they now have landscapers tackling the outside and they want to invite you to come and have a look.

They will be opening the centre up to the public from 3pm to 6pm on Thursday July 18. Everyone is welcome and refreshments will be served for all guests! If you can’t make the open day just call the centre any time for a tour.

Director Jade Davidson, who is Julie’s right hand woman, said: “This is my second home; my heart and soul is here. I am passionate about the local community and sharing our vision at the centre with the community.”

With a daily bus to Rainbow Beach and pick-ups in Cooloola Cove plus after school care, the centre now employs nine staff.

They accept children from fifteen months to school age and offer after-school care.

One of the highlights of the curriculum is the bush kindy. The centres aim is to promote nature play and learning in a natural bush and beach setting and build relationships within that place, its history and indigenous heritage, and to support current needs for preservation and conservation.

Amy, a local Mum of four, said: “my son has been going to Kids Bizz for just over a year now and has absolutely thrived!

The staff are brilliant, they have the best communication we have ever experienced, and they have a free bus service!”

Busy times at Tin Can Bay School

W

E HAVE HAD an extremely busy couple of weeks, with students and staff engaged in a variety of activities including the chaplain’s breakfast, where we welcomed community leaders including State Member Mr Tony Perrett, Mayor Mick Curran, and Gympie Regional Councillor Mr Mark McDonald, who cooked and served up a tasty breakfast for our students.

Students in secondary also recently participated in the Maths Team Challenge at Gympie State High School, and came 10th in a field of 18 schools, beating Victory College, Mary Valley and Kilkivan schools.

Under 8’s day was an awesome success, as was our inaugural colour fun run.

A highlight of both events was seeing students, teachers, parents and extended families come together to have fun and enjoy being part of the TCB school community.

With your assistance we were able to raise $4745 which will be used for air conditioning our classrooms through the coming years.

It was wonderful to see the spirit and enthusiasm that was displayed in supporting our school, and of course the smiles on the students’ faces.

Coloured Sands Starting below the lookout, walk along the beach towards Double Island Point for a kilometre or so to these amazing Coloured sand cliffs, with the best colours around 9 to 10 kilometres along the beach (accessible with a 4wd or Surf and Sand Safari tour) 5486 3131.

Carlo Sand Blow A bush walk up to Carlo Sand Blow is a must for every visitor. Drive to the reservoir at the top of Cooloola Drive. The Blow is an easy 600m walk from the car park or take the longer walk from the National Parks Office. Spectacular views of the Coloured Sands, Double Island Point and Tin Can Bay Inlet are the bonus for your efforts. When the thermals are right, you will often see Hang Gliders taking off and landing at this beautiful piece of Nature’s Sculpture.

Lake Poona After morning tea or lunch in the picnic area you can venture on some wonderful walks to Lake Poona or through some spectacular Rainforest. Allow 40 minutes to reach Lake Poona.

Lake Freshwater Only accessible by 4WD, Tour or Walking. Walking tracks starts at the Bymien picnic area. The round trip from Rainbow Beach will take a full day and requires fitness.

Foreshore Tin Can Bay You can walk 4km from Crabs Creek to Norman Point, over picturesque bridges, signage of flora and fauna, through mangroves, playgrounds and outdoor gyms. It is mostly flat – very safe for children on wheels. Start at the playground opposite the library, cycle to Crabs Creek and stop for a coffee, then return to opposite the library. Enjoy the views out to the inlet while the kids enjoy the playground and skatepark.

Rainbow Beach 10,000 steps walk – from the headland behind the Surf Tower and Playground to Carlo Road. Paths are perfect for bicycles, scooters and skateboards.

I ALL. WELL, finally the weather has settled a bit this last month, and we have managed to get quite a few trips in and the fishing has been great with all crews filling their esky.

The closer in reefs are starting to fish well with the cooler temperatures, which provides a good option for those lumpy days and the wider grounds are doing extremely well.

Some monster Red Emperor have been landed lately including a 14.5kg one that got off and unusually floated to the surface 20 meters behind the boat, let’s just say it was worth the swim but thank God Ashley threw a rope out as it was a struggle against wind and current.

Beach has to offer are in good numbers at the moment including some cracker pearl perch and parrot.

For those that like to stretch the arms big amberjack and cobia also seem to be hanging around. In the straits squid are very thick with frequent catches of 100-plus in a session. As usual, the run out tide seems to work best.

Some nice mackerel have been caught up around inskip and the main channel, however slowed down in the last couple of weeks. Along the beaches reports of a few decent tailor fish, but very hit and miss.

With some decent gutters along the beach again now for those that like a feed of whiting, bream or dart. That’s it for this month, cheers Mat.

INALLY THE weather has settled into a pattern where the rains have lessened and the big southeast trade winds are calming down.

This means a bigger workload for Coastguard Tin Can Bay with the annual migration of yachties from southern latitudes coming over the Wide Bay Bar and through the Sandy Straits on their way north.

Just like the grey nomads heading north

for the winter in caravans, there are a surprisingly large number in boats doing the same thing.

In order to keep us ready to respond to any calls for help during this busy period, we have just had Cooloola Rescue III out of the water for the engines and sterndrives to be serviced, an expensive exercise.

Fortunately she was only out of service for one day. Our secondary vessel, however, is out of service for a week while local boat repair guru, Mark Parry, gives her a first ever antifoul and a cosmetic makeover.

With antifoul, she can stay floating at our pontoon ready for action, where she is

mainly used to assist local boaties needing assistance on waters inside the bar. Both vessels were hauled out thanks to the great crew at the Tin Can Bay Marina.

Our crews continue to upgrade and maintain their skills with frequent training sessions. To a casual observer, it seems like our boats are always breaking down.

However, we regularly practice our vessel recovery techniques and our crew drills.

ITH THE SHORTEST day of the year approaching, we expect the winter species should be active and on the chew. Club members are looking forward to a few trips outside during the winter months with Keely Rose Fishing Charters with an opportunity to enjoy the experience and the fun.

There have been reports of bream being around in the bay in good numbers particularly around the dawn and dusk hours, with most fish being only around the legal size with the odd one of a better quality.

Bream are partial to the humble yabby and a few quality summer whiting have been a much welcomed bycatch while fishing for bream. Maybe the better quality bream could be caught at night on flesh baits or mullet or chicken gut.

Squid are being caught in good numbers and seem to be fairly widespread throughout the bay.

If you look closely when a squid is hooked and nearing the surface there are quite often others following it up and can also be caught if you are quick enough to unhook and get the jig back in the water.

That’s if you can see through the squid ink on your sunnies.

There have been a few quality golden trevally caught recently and the odd average tailor as well.

School mackerel have been around in large numbers in some areas but mostly undersized so be aware of how to identify them and what the legal size is. If in doubt ask Mr Google.

A few flathead have been caught recently, mainly on soft plastics, so try on the tops of the sand banks on the high tide or at the run-off gutters at the last of the run out tide.

The reefs in the bay have been a bit quiet lately with only the occasional quality fish amongst the tiddlers and toad fish. Winter whiting have been caught in good numbers and quality by those who know where and when to go, so give them a try using some of that fresh squid cut in small strips put on a long shank hook.

There are a few sand crabs being caught at the moment and the occasional mud crab as well, so it may be worth putting the pots in.

outdoors industry for ten years, not only does Chris know the products, he can offer advice on fishing and boating and loves helping others get better at fishing to help them enjoy the pastime more.

Chris said: “We want to be the one-stop shop for all your boating and fishing needs.

We have cleaned the shop, freshened it up, ordered a lot more gear, especially fishing and tackle, organised it and it is now more up to date and visitor friendly.

We want to service the fishermen as well as the boaties.”

They now enjoy being closer to family and having the opportunity for their two children to get to know all their

grandparents.

Chris loves the water, he loves being on it, in it, over it and he and Emma want their children to appreciate the beauty and fun of a life spent fishing, boating, sailing, SUP’ing, and walking in and around the water of the Cooloola Coast.

“We were so surprised with how friendly and genuine everyone were at a meeting I was asked to speak. Everyone was happy to chat and even helped us carry the pram.” Chris said.

LTHOUGH OUR Dragon team has managed to continue our twice weekly training schedule, some of us have managed to fit in quite a lot of social activities.

Five members spent two weeks in the land of the Dragon, China, and managed to see Chinese Dragon boating. Another group went to the Pumpkin festival in Goomeri and tried their hand at pumpkin rolling!!

All the stops are out now for training for the Hervey Bay Regatta June 22, and for our own regatta here in TCB July 20/21. Come and join us Thursday afternoons and Sunday mornings. For more info please phone Sandy Wooster 0402 352 756.

Have you ever wanted to try shooting or archery? Come along to SSAA Tin Can Bay Branch Inc. Come and Try Day on July 7. Pistol, .22 rifle, air rifle, shotgun, archery all available to try.

No license required, just bring photo ID, and nclosed shoes must be worn. Ages 11-year-old and above for shooting, archery is open to all ages.

Only $25 to try all disciplines and sausage sizzle lunch, at 32 Rifle Fish Rd, Tin Can Bay. Gates open at 9am for sign on and there will be a Black Powder display during lunch break.

Vouchers available for kid’s sport IT’S ROUND 14 APPLICATION time for Get Started vouchers.

The vouchers are distributed twice yearly and the next applications open on June 17, 2019.

The vouchers can be used once per calendar year to help with your child’s sporting costs with clubs registered with the program.

Applicants must be aged 5 to 17 years to apply and families may apply for more than one child.

The vouchers are to put towards membership and/or participation costs primarily for those who hold a HCC or Pensioner

Concession Card to make sport more accessible to all.

What happens on presentation night ... stays on presentation night T HE 2018-19 sailing season finished with the last race in a cold and blustery 20 knot southerly wind gusting to 30 knots at times.

The end of the season was celebrated at presentation night on May 25, the overall winner of all series being Harley Jackman.

The ‘dirt file’ awards were, as usual, anxiously awaited as no-one ever knows if it will be them who is a recipient of a noted incident that has happened during the year.

This year’s awards were the MNOB (man not on board) whilst racing, the Docking and Dredging, the Navigation and the Maintenance (or rather lack of) awards.

The names of the recipients have been withheld. What happens on Presentation Night stays with Presentation Night!

The winter fun cruises have not been, as the first one was rained out and the second one was cancelled due to lack of wind, although it was a glorious day for a picnic. Fingers are crossed for suitable weather for the last planned cruise at the end of June.

The winter ‘sprint’ series commences on July 14.

In July, the Yacht Club will be running a Sailing Instructor’s course, an Assistant Sailing Instructor’s course for junior sailors and a safety boat course.

A school holiday sailing programme is planned for the September school holidays for beginners and for junior sailors who have already completed the course to advance their skills.

Here’s hoping for good weather.

T WAS ANOTHER busy season for the Patrolling Lifesavers of Rainbow Beach Surf Life Saving Club for 2018-19.

The red and yellow flags were raised in September at 8am before being taken back down at 5pm.

Every weekend and public holiday active patrolling members volunteered their time to protect others, ending the season in May. This season saw over 20,000 people step foot into the patrolled section of our beach and a further 10,000 entering the water.

However not all the people entering the dangerous surf proceeded to swim between the red and yellow flags.

Approximately 2,000 people were seen to be swimming outside the designated swimming area set by our lifesavers.

This meant that 18 lives were saved as a result of the beach users not taking care. Lifesavers also conducted 502 first aid treatments with anything from spinal injuries to jellyfish stings.

Our volunteer Lifesavers are well trained and know the in’s and out’s of safe swimming.

It’s important for people to remember to swim between the red and yellow flags because it’s the safest place to swim on our beach.

The Surf Club is always looking for new members so come and join our fun teams and help keep Rainbow Beach safe for locals and holidaymakers.

Our next Bronze and SRC camp is being run from September 22, with assessment on September 29.

Increase your mobility with a new chair-based class

OOLOOLA COAST PILATES is pleased to announce Monday classes are now located at the Rainbow Beach Community Centre, 8.45-10.15am Pilates Mat Plus, 10.30-11.45am Gold Class Pilates Class for seniors.

The Gold Class Pilates class is a new offering and we hope it will help seniors

and those with movement issues to begin or continue their fitness endeavours. It will be a chair-based class with a strength and mobility focus.

Goals are to improve strength, improve balance, prevent falls, gain more function in day-to-day activities. We recommend anyone who wishes to join this session

call for a chat regarding their health and organise a medical clearance to exercise from their doctor.

Exercise intensity will be low-to-moderate and won’t involve a lot of cardiovascular movements initially.

Our Pilates Mat Plus class incorporate 30 minutes of myofascial (trigger point)

release work, 50 minutes of pilates on the mat for strength, mobility and core, then 15 minutes of functional movement training to take your pilates off the mat and into daily living movements.

A Little Humour TWENTY-FIVE-DOLLAR HAIRCUT A balding man went into a barber’s shop and asked how much it would be for a haircut.

“Twenty-five dollars,” said the barber.

“Twenty-five dollars, that’s crazy!” exclaimed the man. “I’ve hardly got any hair. How can it be that expensive?”

The barber explained, “It’s $5 for the actual cut and $20 for the search fee.”

RIB TICKLER At Sunday School, the children were learning how God created everything, including human beings.

Johnny was especially intent when the teacher told him how Eve was created from one of Adam’s ribs.

Later in the week, his mother noticed him lying down as though he were ill, and said “Johnny, what is the matter?”

Johnny responded, “I have a pain in my side, I think I’m going to have a wife.”

PALMS It was Palm Sunday, but because of a sore throat, 5-year-old Johnny stayed home from church with a sitter.

When the family returned home, they were carrying several palm fronds. Johnny asked them what they were for.

“People held them over Jesus’ head as he walked by,” his father told him.

“Wouldn’t you know it,” Johnny fumed, “the one Sunday I don’t go and he shows up!”
