Changing of the Guard I

AM DELIGHTED to announce we have a new Editor/Manager for the Community News in long-time local, Lee McCarthy.

Lee started last week and brings a wealth of media expertise, we have hit the paper together for this issue - and it was complete before the weekend!

It’s great that we didn’t need to sell the paper, Lee has the experience to step into both our shoes!

Would you believe our first issue was over six and a half years ago? I have had a wonderful time creating almost 80 editions for our special corner of the world.

We’ll still be in the background…. especially for events such as the Bay to Bay Trailable Yacht Race. A thank you to the Tin Can Bay Yacht Club and Ray Sampson for my cruise on the Spectator Boat.

For the first month of winter, there’s the Pro Am, IRB Ocean Roar and a Climate Change event. Try more fitness sessions, enter a QCWA competition or Cooloola’s Got Talent.

There are a lot of people creating fun experiences for the locals and visitors so get out and enjoy them. And if you see Lee about - please say hi!

HE TIN CAN BAY Country Club is proud to announce they are hosting The Sunshine Swing Golf Pro-Am (Professional/ Amateurs) on Thursday, June 27.

Vets Captain and event organiser, Gregory Tritton, said the event is open to all male, female and junior golfers both members and non-members. Gregory said: “Tin Can Bay Country Club has been fortunate to have been selected by the Australian PGA to host this event.”

The format will be three amateur golfers playing a single stableford event with a professional. The cost to play in this event including lunch and 18 holes of golf will be $35 per person. There are prizes worth over $1000!

The day will start at approximately 9am and run through to early afternoon. Prizes will be awarded at 4.30pm. There is no limit to numbers and bookings close on Wednesday June 26.

And who knows, the event may sprout an

upcoming champion: “Some of Australia’s greatest golfers, Greg Norman, Adam Scott, Marc Leishman, Jason Day and Peter Senior, to mention just a few, all started their brilliant careers from these tournaments.”

HERE HAS BEEN a date change for the 2019 Cooloola’s Got Talent showcase with it now being held on Saturday, June 22.

President Jess Milne explained: “We usually have the showcase this time of year however the complex was previously booked out, but has now become available.”

There is now more time to practice with plenty of cash up for grabs over a variety of awards as there is no first, second and third.

The showcase is a great opportunity to be creative and have fun. Let your imagination run wild and script an onstage performance that will rival any YouTube clip!

The YAP team is on hand to assist any youth that has an idea but isn’t sure how to go about it. Don’t forget that the talent part is optional; it’s all about having a go!

There will be an onstage practice time available to familiarise yourself with the set and shake off some nerves.

Underground power a reality for Rainbow Beach A

FTER MANY YEARS of lobbying local agencies, business owners in the Main Street will be rewarded with underground power and new street lights.

Over the coming weeks, Rainbow Beach locals and visitors will see the beginnings

HE GYMPIE REGION with its picturesque coastline and stunning landscapes is the inspiration for many local artists, artisans and arts collectives.

The Studio Trails is a unique way to explore the inner sanctum of local artists and offers art lovers the opportunity to talk to the artists and visit their private studios, galleries and spaces.

The Gympie Regional Gallery is the hub of the local arts community and presents a dynamic and diverse program of local, curated and touring exhibitions as well as workshops, activities and events.

Held annually on weekends in June and July the studios will open from 10am – 4pm or at other times by appointment.

Most of the art works on display are for sale and many of the artists are available to undertake commissioned works.

Feel free to plan your own trail on Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 in Tin Can Bay and Rainbow Beach from 10am to 4pm both days or by appointment.

of much anticipated works along Rainbow Beach Road (Clarkson Drive to Kirchner Avenue) and Wide Bay Esplanade.

Council will commence initial works this month with the bulk of the trenching, laying of cables, and installing of street lights expected to occur between the September and December 2019 school holidays.

The initial works will include potholing of footpaths and roads to locate existing underground services, as well as the relocation of a Telstra pit near the intersection of Rainbow Beach Road and Kirchner Avenue.

Andrew Hawkins’s business, Rainbow Beach Realty, is located in the main street. He said, “There is the safety aspect, but most people will be noticing the visual appeal. Both elements will be a good improvement.

“Let’s hope for a speedy execution of the upgrade,” Andrew continued.

“We look forward to enjoying the completed work.”

Council will work closely with Energex and will engage with each of the businesses who will be directly impacted by the works to ensure that the construction schedule keeps disruptions to a minimum.

To complement the new street lighting, Council is planning future streetscaping as part of the “Our Towns” Program that will replace street furniture, including seats and bins, and introduce cycle racks, as well as improve landscaping and sections of footpaths.

FTER 30 YEARS of living from Cairns to the Sunshine Coast and working in the advertising and media industry, Lee McCarthy is back to settle in her muchloved Rainbow Beach.

Starting her working life during the school holidays at Val and Ted’s Snappy Snacks in 1975 and followed by work at the Mikado Motor Inn, Sam and Maureen’s Tourist Information Centre and the Gazebo where she famously used chocolate sauce instead of barbecue sauce on the milkman’s oysters Kilpatrick.

“My family has enjoyed the region since the road became accessible, with surfing trips to Double Island and Freshwater on weekends. Mum and Dad bought land in Clarkson Drive in 1975 and built a place for us to spend time together which today is a holiday home used by three generations.”

Following the family lead, Lee received her bronze medallion from the Surf Club in 1984 in the same squad as brother Andrew, owner of Rainbow Beach Horse Rides.

Fast and furious IRB action!

Older brother Kim is still an active volunteer for the Rainbow Beach Surf Club after 44 years of patrols. He and father John are life members. John passed away last May which has been a huge loss for the family.

Since 1988, Lee has been working in the media. She produced her own magazine, Gympie Women Magazine, worked for WIN television in Cairns and WIN and Channel 7 on the Sunshine Coast, was an account executive at Profile Magazine on the Sunshine Coast, a features manager for APN and worked for McCord Advertising in the ‘80s.

Now based at Rainbow Beach with her ‘holiday’ home at Sippy Downs, Lee says it was time: “With both boys now independent, the chance to live in Rainbow running a community newspaper was a golden opportunity. I am very grateful to Heatley and Michelle.”

Fast and furious action promised during Ocean Roar!

HE HIGH-OCTANE IRB series Ocean Roar hits Rainbow on June 1 and 2 so make sure you head to the beach to watch the IRB’s (inflatable rescue boats) in action.

The series sees hundreds of surf lifesavers fire up their IRB engines for SLSQ’s Ocean Roar series and put their surf skills to the ultimate test.

As competitors from Surf Life Saving Clubs around the state fight it out for surf

supremacy, you can watch it from many vantage points including the beach bar, and enjoy food by Beauty and Beard.

The teams simulate rescue situations and test the abilities of drivers and their crew, and is a precursor to the Queensland IRB Championships.

Come and join the teams and spectators to experience Round 4 of the series and have a fantastic day.

AST MONTH,15 scientists, from as far afield as Darwin and Kangaroo Island, and nearly 100 members of the public...soon to become ‘Citizen Scientists’ ... converged on the Rainbow Beach Community Hall. Eager people had travelled from across southeast Queensland and the Gympie, Maryborough and Hervey Bay regions to be a part of the guided field trips and learn from the experts.

The weekend ‘blitz’ to try and identify as many species as possible began with workshops including how to use the phone app, iNaturalist, so that photos, GPS locations and the names of species could be collected easily in the field and then verified online by scientists and amateur naturalists across the world.

Spoilt for choice on Saturday and Sunday, they had to decide which groups to join each day with a wide range of specialists on hand to lead the excursions to find pandanus, birds, spiders, plants, fungi, moths, butterflies, insects, reptiles, mammals, frogs, water bugs and freshwater fish to recorded both on paper or in the app.

Hundreds of records were made with the first 285 digital records showing 161 species including two threatened species of frogs. The paper records will be added over the coming days and aligned with their respective photos. Data will be added to the Queensland and Australian biodiversity databases.

Showery weather couldn’t dampen the spirits of the intrepid expeditioners, in fact the conditions were perfect for fungi and frogs. Other activities included “The Listening”, an excursion led by naturalist, Mike West, to hear the ground parrot chorus; and a program of speakers including Dr Don Sands (Insect interactions), Andy Young (Miniature moths and the boronia) and Dr Geoff Monteith (Discovering the Cooloola Monster).

Ian Morris and Fiona Hawthorne paid tribute to John Sinclair and Maree Prior, two champions for nature in Fraser Island (K’gari) and the Cooloola Coast who were both lost to cancer this year.

Grants for Cooloola Coast groups F

EDERAL MEMBER for Wide Bay, Llew O’Brien, is recognising the valuable work of volunteers, with more than $20,000 in grants for Cooloola Coast community groups.

Grants of between $1,000 and $5,000 were provided through a $20 million Volunteer Grants program to help 34 Wide Bay community organisations with needs including buying equipment, paying fuel costs, and training volunteers.

Tin Can Bay Meals on Wheels are one of the organisations to receive a grant.

President, Julie Arnold said, “I really want to thank Linda Munce and Michelle O’Gorman, as they did all the work for the grant.

“The funding is for our volunteers, to help with their travel - giving back to them for their volunteering.”

The group received $5,000 for equipment, including a barbecue and urn to help with fundraising, first aid kits, fuel vouchers and office equipment.

Julie is also grateful to the past president of Meals on Wheels at Tin Can Bay, Mike Clifford, who stood in for two positions on the committee in the last few weeks. Now the treasurer role has been filled, the group are still searching for a secretary.

Congratulations to the other organisations who also received grants: Cooloola Coast Medical Transport $5,000 – To help with vehicle and travel expenses for volunteers.

Tin Can Bay Fishing Club - $3,190 – Equipment to help volunteers with

training courses and workshops, storage of essential documents and records and facilities for visiting groups.

Cooloola Coast Youth Activity Project - $4,190 – To assist with organisational software, fuel reimbursement, first aid equipment, gazebo awnings for weather protection, chairs, and barbecue equipment.

Cooloola Coast Branch Little Athletics Centre - $3,000 – For computer equipment, fuel costs, training in first aid and child safety, first aid kits, two sunshelter gazebos, and storage containers.

“Wide Bay simply would not be the same without volunteers, who are the lifeblood of our communities and deliver important

services, support and assistance,” Mr O’Brien said.

“The energy, expertise and time our volunteers give represents what Australian communities are all about – offering a helping hand.

“I am glad to be able to extend a helping hand in return with this funding from the Coalition Government so they can continue their work and build a stronger, safer community.”

Mr O’Brien said volunteering also had a significant economic benefit to local communities.

“The enormous value of volunteering is estimated at $290 billion per year.

Australia’s 8.7 million volunteers and their organisations are the backbone of community life,” he said.

What do think should be on the Sports Oval?

OULD YOU LIKE to see a half court for basketball back in Rainbow Beach? Or what about an off-leash dog area? Or how would the addition of a running track appeal to you?

Council has been visiting the school and children, talking to sporting groups and locals at the recent consultations held on site at the Sport Oval on Kurrawa Drive, Rainbow Beach.

It is an area used mainly for cricket games and training in season, a thoroughfare for families walking to school from Bombala and Tingira Crescents and has been the site of school athletics carnivals for decades - even helicopters land here.

Council officers were busy when I dropped by - explaining all of the plans. It is due to be implemented in stages. There is no funding as yet, however this Master Plan will assist in gaining grants for work to progress.

It is much, much more than a playground. The plan includes walking tracks into the surrounding bush, fencing, and even plans for a flexible open space community events area with a raised flat mound for an event stage.

One request from a Year 9 student was: a real size soccer goal with an 18-yard box and a fence behind it to stop any balls, and a 10 metre concrete wall just to kick the ball against. Please encourage your children to have their say, too.

Gympie Region and Cooloola Coast is

Australia’s next tourism hotspot!

EVERAL NEW MEMBERS and a big agenda ensured the recent Rainbow Beach Commerce and Tourism meeting was full of discussion this month.

Two dozen local business owners attended the meeting hosted by the Rainbow Beach Sports Club giving them the opportunity to express their opinions and ideas on a wide range of issues facing businesses and citizens of the town.

As always, the promotion of Rainbow Beach as a leading destination in Australia was of high importance to all attendees.

Mention was made of the recent visit by specialist researcher and author Terry Rider, who believes the region is the next ‘hot spot’, and the importance of promoting Rainbow Beach as a destination, not a

thoroughfare to Fraser Island.

Major concerns were raised regarding the Fire Prevention Plan - particularly around the overgrown areas at Inskip Point, the town outskirts and around the school.

Some burning off has been completed however fire is still a major danger to the town.

The proposed RV park slated for the region brought a lot of correspondence and opinion. There was a hearty mix of comments for and against the proposal with the consensus being, if you want to voice any concerns or positives, it is important to write to Council to express your views.

Rainbow Beach and Fraser Island, which brought 15 scientists and 100 volunteers to the area to document all flora and fauna for a new biodiversity database used to plot new and existing species.

‘Voluntourists’ and Green Nomads are a great asset to any region and the new traveller making their way around the country. The team will be starting focus groups asking for input from locals and business owners in the coming months.

Sean and Elisa presented how their business promotes Rainbow Beach as a wedding destination and it was noted that with all the natural beauty, quality venues and magnificent backdrops it could and should be the number one for weddings in Australia. Working together as a town is the best way to make this a reality.

Other discussion included the famous rainbow stairs with a letter from Council outlining the future of the stairs and asking residents to keep an eye out for vandals. A thank you to the O’Connells from Rainbow Beach IGA for their generous donation to Commerce and Tourism.

This money has come from the IGA Community Chest.

A lot of positive discussion was voiced on the need to prioritise a reduction of single plastic use and other environmental initiatives to benefit the town.

Several members including permanent lifeguard Liam Toohey and Gayle Duignan from the Rainbow Beach Community Centre are liaising with Council, Surf Life Saving Queensland and other stakeholders to determine the possibility of a wheelchair access mat to the sea.

What a fabulous night! Everyone who was there remarked on the splendid singing and playing and the considerable accomplishment of our performers.

The evening started well with a rousing band item followed by our first singalong.

Everyone played, sang or spoke, committing themselves to a performance worth waiting for.

Some of us earn a living playing music, some teaching music or imparting the love of music to others less fortunate, some just have music in their whole beings.

Our lives have all been enriched by music and every one of our performers gain satisfaction by the appreciation shown by our audience.

We have always said that the audience participation is a good indication of how much they are enjoying the experience and there was a palpable joyous feeling there that night.

Last month our night was enhanced by the performance of Chloe Shieh, a 15-yearold girl who is emerging as a very fine performer in our Gympie area.

Window into nature

A memorial exhibition, using magnificent watercolours of local flora and fauna by late well-known and eccentric artist Dorothy Hall, is coming to the Gympie Regional Gallery on Saturday June 29.

From nuts, flowers, fungi, birds and butterflies to lungfish, you will find magic in each of the artworks.

This colourful exhibition is presented for the first time on this scale by the De Greene Art Trust and will be on view until July 20.

Entry to the Gympie Regional Gallery at 39 Nash Street is free, with opening hours from 10am to 4pm, Tuesday to Saturday.

Stitched bugs, beetles and butterflies Coming up at the Gallery is an exhibition of colourful crochet and stitch-styled miniature replica bugs, beetles, spiders and butterflies by Violette Vegh-Jameson OAM. Should the Gold Rush parade be at night?

Council is considering a big change to this year’s Gold Rush Festival by including a Friday evening parade instead of a Saturday daytime parade.

The aim is to reinvigorate the festival and encourage greater levels of involvement from schools and the broader community.

Council said that an evening parade would mean that new and exciting elements could be added to what would become the festival’s launch event, including a large night-time lantern display with lanterns designed and paraded by local school students.

Mother’s Day Classic was T

HE 2019 MOTHER’S Day Classic was a wonderful morning of celebration and reflection while raising funds for breast cancer research, with over $1000 going to the National Breast Cancer Foundation.

The new course along the Tin Can Bay foreshore was a hit as it was family-friendly with no road crossings. It was a picturesque shady change

with the added bonus of interacting with fellow participants.

The return route enabled the runners to be cheered on as they passed those still on the way and gave an opportunity to share a smile during the morning.

There was some fierce competition between the runners but young Chloe Daniels blitzed the pack once again to take out first place.

Letitia Rendell, Suzanne Norman and Lisa Bull were all decked in pink for the walk.

Unexpected fourth placegetter was Mark Daniels!

Maggie Travers and Val said their Heart Foundation Walking Group “One Step at a Time” were represented on the day with seven humans, five dogs and one cat!

But no one predicted the fourth place getter and everyone was left gobsmacked when her father Mark Daniels came thundering over the line.

In previous years he has stopped for a pie at the bakery, so the new course has had multiple benefits all round!

A big thank you goes out to Mark Vine and Terry Steele for volunteering on the day; the Tin Can Bay QCWA ladies for manning the registration table and donating the finish line fruit; Ange @ the Cove for providing printing and all the participants for coming out on Mother’s Day and also making the effort to get dressed up in pink!

In the last issue we sailed through Ian Dean’s early years on the Cooloola Coast, spent some time touring Fraser Island and had a crash course on the history of the barges. This month we hear more tall tales about boats, fish and a shed load of ice!

URING THE INFAMOUS “barge wars” era, prices went so low that people were actually paid a carton of beer to head to the island!

“Oh yeah that was big, I was in the news nearly every bloody day, I still have some news clippings lying around here somewhere.”

About 18 months after Gordon Elmer decided to call it a day, Ian was approached by investors to start operating another ferry service.

“I brought a barge up from Melbourne, called it Perseverance. It was early ‘90s, must’ve been about ‘92, I think.”

But with license and insurance costs to pay and a competition that was running for free, Ian decided to cut his losses.

“Sid bought the landing rights off me and I sold that barge and it went to Yeppoon to do the north west island run.”

Ian found himself skippering once again, taking passengers and cars from Redland Bay to Stradbroke Island. One day his boss came to him with the offer too good to refuse; “a little holiday”, repossessing a barge from Thursday Island back to Redland Bay.

“What a trip! With no navigation gear and a compass incorrectly reading, it took me three weeks. I didn’t even get paid for that job! It was all a learning curve, y’know, barbeque talk now.”

It was also the straw that broke the camel’s back, after months working away from home, he missed his family and returned to Rainbow to start work building yet another boat.

“I built the Marlynn, a steel 36 ft twin screw. This was built for whale watching! By the time I got it finished they had changed the rules and needed a permit from marine parks to operate.

“You had to go to tender for it but I was outside the region, so I just turned that into a charter and fishing boat, then I sold that off and they took it up north.”

The Iceworx Desperate times called for desperate measures and Ian was forced to take on some unusual work. He was approached by a Fijian company to harvest sea cucumbers!

But the stench from processing them made him so ill that…

“Back to fishing I go!”

became a bit despondent. He leaned over to long-time mate, Ray Ross…

“I am going to start an Ice Works.”

Ray queried him on his plans.

“Yeah, but what are you going to do when it gets quiet?”

Ian thought…

“Dunno?”

Starting in March with a small ice machine, he filled a shipping container

“Easter came and so did the rain. It took me until August to empty the container!”

Things quickly picked up with the business handling fish from local beaches, reefs and Fraser Island, allowing them to expand the business and Ian to finally pull up anchor at home with his wife and family.

30 years, she was living in Gympie and was the publishing manager at Murray Views souvenir shop. She came down to be property manager at Rainbow Beach Real Estate.

“It was about the same time I built the new factory in Karoonda Rd, and again, another boat in the backyard called X-ice.

This is the last one!

“I didn’t have the first Ice Works here, Sunny Chaplain had one up at Double Island Point. There was a big frontal dune just this side of Middle Rock, it went all the way up towards the lagoon area.

“National Parks actually had a big camping area there but the toilets and everything got washed away and they shut it all down. Sunny had his huts in the middle of where that little lagoon is now, that’s how much erosion’s taken place. It’s all natural, things change.”

Ian worked with Sunny’s crew for a short time, fishing for mullet. They would catch fish through the day, then return to the shed to ice down fish that they held in old apple crates.

At night they would take the fish down the beach to Tewantin, where they had their own barge, unload at the Noosa fish board then come back up the beach and be ready for daylight the next morning!

Handing over the reigns In 2005 Ian received some unfortunate news and was diagnosed with cancer.

With doctors giving him a 10% chance of surviving three months, he was advised to get his affairs in order and enjoy his last Christmas with his family. That was 13 years ago.

“I just sorted myself out, Marilyn did a lot of research, I had a bit of research in my head, bits and pieces from other people. I wanted to give it a try and we went from there and to this day I’m still clear.

“There’s probably another 50 or 60 people I’ve helped out there that should be dead too, I call in and see how they’re going, all good!

“That’s what this place is about, it’s such a small community, everyone knows something to help. Every now and then I go in for a check up and they say it’s nothing but a bloody miracle.

“My health scare led me to step back somewhat and let youth take over. My son Tony handles most of the day-to-day, but the whole family helps out; my grandkids Jack, Kasey, Maddie and her partner Mick are all integral. We will start our 26th year this month.”

UN FACT: there is a particular street in Rainbow Beach that is spelt differently at either end.

The street sign at the western-end of ILMENITE AV carries the correct spelling – while the same can’t be said at the other end, which adds an extra ‘L’ and reads: ILLMENITE AV...

Having read this, I’m sure many of you will go and check it out for yourselves.

Maybe even get a photo for Instagram or Facebook. I can see this becoming a new local attraction up there with the rainbow coloured stairs! You read it here first folks: # how good is spelling!

In reality, I’m sure most people will realise: they got it right at one end of the street, but at the other end they just stuffed it up…

Unfortunately, it was a similar story with the rodeo, which also told a different story at either end of the street.

At one end, as you’ve no doubt read, were the ‘success’ stories: a great event,

which raised a lot of money and provided good times for all. Well – nearly all…

At the other end of the street, police and paramedics were kept busy with those that just stuffed it up – and not for the first time.

While most were all about having a good time, others were instead prone to alcohol-fuelled violence, selling drugs to minors, damaging parked cars and drink driving. The amount of smashed glass on the roads was an indication that the night was not ‘all good’…

To cap it off, as a 43 year old patron left a licenced establishment, he was cowardpunched by a 21 year old local thug who has a history of this type of behaviour.

The patron hit his head on the road as he fell, and – after being assisted home – began fitting and losing consciousness.

At 2am that morning, as I watched this man convulsing on the floor, I wasn’t so convinced it was a ‘great night’.

Fortunately, paramedics stabilised the

man who was taken to hospital with a suspected broken jaw, and a concussion injury to the back of his head…

The offender, for his part, was fined $783 – and has been banned from all licenced premises in Rainbow Beach – but let’s face it the incident could have had a

JUST FINISHED a drive from Victoria and across NSW and I have not seen a lot of grass, but a fair amount of water.

Victoria has had a late autumn break but should be in for a good cropping year at least.

Southern and northern NSW have had good rains but around the Dubbo region it could be a tough season.

Late in April I dropped three large pallets of food to the Drought Angels in Chinchilla as the highway west of Mitchell was cut and more rain was predicted. Another 100mm fell not long after I left.

With recent improvements, we may be able to slow our donations to the west

by July and hand over to the Drought Angels.

You can only live in hope, but as country people know with rain it doesn’t rain dollars, especially when you have no stock.

Locusts moved in to some areas to wipe out paddocks west of the Longreach/ Winton area.

On a brighter note, quite a lot of cattle have come in to the Longreach area on agistment from the Northern Territory which will give some people income. RV tourists will help town economies now for a few months.

New Manta species identified

W

E’VE KICKED OFF to a great Manta season.

Wolf Rock divers assist in photo identification of the sharks and rays we see on the site, and along with Project Manta who enter the information into a huge international database, we have successfully identified a ‘new’ manta.

This means we get the opportunity to name the reef manta along with its ID number and it can then be tracked by anyone else who sees it along the east coast.

Manta rays are a travelling species with a large resident population around Lady Elliot Island. The identified rays can be

seen all along the coast from Fish Rock in NSW up to the GBR islands of Lady Musgrave, Heron Island and further north.

Our Grey Nurse shark population spend most of their pregnancy period at Wolf Rock, then head off to pup at aggregation sites further south on the coast.

Meanwhile, a separate population begins to head north to us from as far south as Jervis Bay in NSW. This means we have Grey Nurse sharks year round at Rainbow Beach.

We have our highest numbers of sharks on site at the moment - around 70 can be seen - we expect numbers to remain high over the next few months. For a chance to witness this impressive event, bookings and enquiries contact Wolf Rock Dive Centre: 07 5486 8004.

ITH THE crowds reducing after Easter, this is a great time to come down and catch up with the dolphins near the boat ramp at Tin Can Bay. The two calves, Joe and Luna, are doing well and getting bigger. It is always a thrill to see how well they are developing.

Mystique still comes in occasionally and the other day he actually fed from the public. Unfortunately when he comes in, Patch disappears so something is going on between them. This dolphin has an old injury with a large chunk taken out from behind his dorsal fin by a shark, but it doesn’t interfere with his viability.

Great to see a few new volunteers who are going through the paces to become a fully fledged dolphin volunteer.

If you are interested in dolphins and wish to volunteer, please contact one of the coordinators at the Centre. After an interview and a three-month training program to assess your suitability, you can become a fully fledged dolphin volunteer.

HE RAINBOW BEACH Community Association manages the Community Centre and the hire of the hall, conference room and office space.

At the AGM, Gayle Duignan was voted as the new president, Lynette Barrett reconfirmed as vice president, Rose Mayes as treasurer and Elisa Seul as secretary.

Maree Heron, outgoing secretary and devoted volunteer said: “We want to see the community facilities used as much as possible and organise accessible events to look forward to.”

The recently elected committee of the not-for-profit association is excited to bring forward the established ongoing events and support new ones for the upcoming year. The Centre is kept alive by the ongoing support of its volunteers.

The vice president, Lynnette Barrett, said: “Members and volunteers are glad to have some new faces on

board and we want to offer the community some fresh ideas and a modern approach.”

“The Association has some dedicated members and volunteers carry out a great purpose. The services provided are for all of us, either living in or visiting town. It is time for younger residents to start getting more involved,” said Elisa Seul.

Wedding venue bookings have increased and some activities such as bingo on Monday, table tennis on Wednesday and the monthly Craft Markets (every fourth Saturday) have increased in popularity.

The Association aims to promote a greater sense of community in Rainbow Beach, providing benefits to the members and running various fund raising activities.

S PART OF THE first Queensland Climate Week, the Cooloola Coastcare Weed Warriors are inviting members of the public to be part of the solution by planting a native.

The project is sponsored by the Burnett Mary Regional Group.

On June 6 the Weed Warriors will be revegetating a section of runoff waterway that had been infested with Singapore Daisy leaving it bare of native plants.

“We are asking the community to take a moment to think about climate change and the role native plants play in soil

stabilisation,” co-ordinator Jess Milne explained.

There will also be a short stroll to admire the many beautiful native species that adorn the foreshore followed by a free morning tea. The Wetlands and Waterways book and the Beauties and Beasties reference brochure will be available to take home.

To take part, meet at the corner of Toolara Rd and the Esplanade opposite the Cooloola Waters Retirement Village at 10am, all plants and equipment supplied.

UR PLANT OF THE month for June is one that grows well in a rockery or a container and will attract beneficial insects to the garden. The plant is Artanema fimbriatum (Koala Bells).

Its attractive blue tubular flowers provide nectar for butterflies, and bluebanded bees may also come to visit if there are enough blossoms.

You can promote flowering with regular fertilising with a slow release fertiliser suitable for natives, regular tip pruning and pruning after flowering.

Other aspects of this plant are its dark green ovate leaves, tolerance of most soil types and ability to grow in full sun or part shade.

Another spot for Koala Bells is around a frog pond, where especially in conjunction with rocks, it will provide good protection for small frogs.

Community Health Forum helps address accessing GPs T

HE TIN CAN BAY Country Club was jam packed with over 180 people attending the Cooloola Coast Community Health Forum hosted by the Primary Health Network and the Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service keeping the plethora of service providers on display busy distributing information.

The forum was a workshop style event that clustered ‘think tanks’ of community members to brainstorm and record health services that they were aware of in the area and why they were important.

There was also a section for lack of services that will hopefully highlight the burning issues in the community therefore solutions can be investigated.

Robb Major from PHN facilitated the event and outlined that the forum was a community data collection activity.

Accessing GP services was top of the list and Robb explained that this is an issue in many remote and rural areas. PHN are working towards addressing this problem across the board as it was not isolated to this area.

Who has a skeleton in their cupboard?

AST MONTH Probus visited the Bone Museum in Gympie as a group and while it initially sounded gruesome, it was one of the most interesting and educational two hours we had experienced for some time.

I felt everyone learned a great deal about the various skeletons, and the young curator gave not only a history of the original animal, but showed us arthritic bones, old broken bones, a two-headed calf skeleton and a platypus.

He also explained the process of ensuring skeletons (once the internal organs have been removed) can be placed in a formalin mix and there were several examples of these, including a baby crocodile. To

satisfy our curiosity he had bones from the smallest to the largest animal, but no human skeleton!

On May 22 a group of members attended the “Senior Moments” live stage show at the Brolga Theatre in Maryborough - a great production with lots of laughs!

This month we will be going out for lunch, attending Morning Melodies plus a barbeque and games day - all with the aim of Fun, Friendship and Fellowship, our motto.

HE COOLOOLA COAST Local Ambulance Committee is planning to hold their annual Flower Show on Saturday, October 5 at the Tin Can Bay Community Hall.

The show is an important fundraiser for the local Ambulance Service and gives the community an opportunity to show their support and appreciation for the work done by the officers. So start tending those plants and flowers and become part of a very worthwhile and enjoyable day.

As usual, there will be a photography competition as well as stalls and morning

and afternoon teas.

Entry forms and further details will be available from early August at the Tin Can Bay and Rainbow Beach libraries and some retail outlets.

Lenses for Landscape

NE OF THE most popular genres of photography is Landscape. Typically defined, images of this genre capture scenes of the landscape by day, night and every time in between. While appearing static, landscapes are far from it.

Sunrise transitions to day and sunset transitions to night, the weather changes, the tide comes in and out. The landscape – and in particular the light on the landscape – is constantly changing.

A common question often asked is what lens (or camera) is best for taking landscape photos? The simple answer is the camera you have with you, even if that camera is only your phone.

Having said that, phone cameras are becoming increasingly sophisticated, and in some instances are a match for traditional digital cameras. Loaded with apps that can assist in editing photos on the go, phone cameras are becoming serious contenders for landscape photos, and many landscape photographers have a phone camera in their camera bag.

The complicated answer to that question is the best camera you can afford, whether that is a DSLR or a compact point-and-shoot. If it’s a DSLR, the quality of your image is determined

primarily by the lens – the better the quality, the better the image (though knowing HOW to use camera and lens to their best capabilities is perhaps an even bigger determination!).

For the most part, a wideangle lens is best for landscapes.

This is because the human eye has a wide angle of view and to match this, you need a lens capable of capturing the angle of view seen by the human eye.

Wide-angle lenses cover the focal length range from the ultra-wide angles of 10-11mm up to the standard wide angles of 28-35mm.

Many entry level DSLR cameras are sold with “kit” lenses, which are a cheaper alternative to get you started. If this genre of photography interests you, you can invest in more expensive, specialist lenses later on.

T HANK YOU TO the Cooloola Coast Community and to members for their recent donations to the Tin Can Bay Community & Men’s Shed’s equipment pool.

Our future workroom now boasts two wood lathes (one free standing and one bench mounted), two dust extractors, two bench saws, a band saw and a drop saw.

Two scroll saws, which will be particularly easy for the ladies to use.

A Working Committee is currently working on a Health Plan for members which will form part of the Shed’s overall Business Plan.

The Management Committee and several members have been working hard to address the various shed regulatory issues as we endeavour to move toward completion.

We are very pleased to advise that, after a recent meeting with Shed Officials, Councillor Mark McDonald was able to negotiate limited access to the Shed to allow Club members to complete the necessary works involved in achieving compliance with Council’s Development Application.

Over 60s visit Hervey Bay

EN OF OUR Over 60’s group had a trip to the Hervey Bay Historical Village and Museum this month.

The weather was very kind to us, with blue skies and the rain held off for our trip. The Village is a wonderful place to spend a couple of hours.

The scary thing is that we all remember a lot of the things we saw at the museum from our younger days.

Our next venture will be a trip on the Mary Valley Rattler, as well as a trip to the Brolga for Morning Melodies.

Our meetings are the first Tuesday of each month, at the Rainbow Beach Surf Club, from 10am. Enquiries phone Dorothy on 5486 2357.

AST MONTH OR so has been jam packed with activities both inside and outside the school. We also managed to squeeze in our school cross-country.

It was good to see so many students participating and putting in a great effort.

Student council movie night The student council are running a movie night on Friday June 7. This is always a popular activity.

The night begins at 5.30pm in the library, where students come together as a whole school to enjoy a movie together and have dinner. The meal will consist of a hot dog and popper.

The cost of the evening is $5 per person.

As this is a Rainbow Beach State School event, only students who attend the school are able to participate.

Feel free to wear your PJs and bring a pillow and blanket to make yourself comfortable. Stay tuned for more information and dinner order forms that will be distributed soon.

Cooloola Small Schools Athletics Our 10, 11 and 12-year-olds participate in our Cooloola Small Schools Athletics day. Rainbow Beach put on a picture perfect day and students from all schools had a great time.

Selected students will now participate in the district trials in Gympie.

Mother’s Day stall I would like to thank all the people involved in making presents and running our P&C Mother’s Day Stall fundraiser.

I’m sure that all the mothers would agree that their gifts were sensational.

Healthy plants This year, the grade 6’s have been designing a healthy plant delivery service in technology.

The aim of the unit was to design a healthy plant that could be delivered to client’s doors, to promote healthy eating in the community.

Each student had to choose a healthy plant to grow, then make a fact sheet including a healthy recipe.

Tin Can Bay School News

Japan Day Last month, Sensei Lewis Bishop, the Japanese teacher at Tin Can Bay School, organised the first Japan Day to introduce all students to some Japanese fun and culture.

Bishop Sensei organised for students from Prep to Year 10 to try a range of activities, including shodo - the ancient practice of Japanese calligraphy, suminagashi - paper marbling with ink on paper and origami – the art of folding a piece of paper into something (we made jumping frogs!).

Students were super excited to have Motoyuki Niwa, a Japanese taiko drumming expert, run a drumming workshop. Niwa Sensei and his drums shook the foundations of the school hall and our students revelled in the thunderous rhythms.

Students played along with Niwa sensei with many coming back for a second go!

The day was topped off with a sampling of rolled veggie sushi and GYOZA. Oishi!

2019 Chaplaincy Week Tin Can Bay School celebrated Chaplaincy Week last month to recognise and raise awareness for the wonderful work our own Chappy Karen does within our school and wider community.

Mayor Mick Curran, State MP Tony Perrett and Councillor Mark McDonald joined in the celebration by helping to deliver a special breakfast for students at Brekkie Club.

Chappy Karen has been providing social, emotional, practical and spiritual support to students, being a listening ear, a caring presence and helping them to find a positive way to deal with issues.

At lunch times she provides a relaxed, supportive space for students to be able to connect with each other and in classrooms, offering hands-on support.

The 2019 Gympie Show was an exciting event with three Year 9/10 InTAD students winning prizes for their bookcase entries in the category Woodwork – Novice, small or large piece of furniture.

Congr atulations to Charleigh Bogodoohoff on second place, Kaine Brennan on third place and Connor McKay who was awarded ‘Special Prize.’

Year 4 and 6 students had the wonderful opportunity to check out our award-winning entries when they attended the free student day on the Thursday.

They also roamed the showgrounds following the USC Education Trail to learn about the

Coloured Sands Starting below the lookout, walk along the beach towards Double Island Point for a kilometre or so to these amazing Coloured sand cliffs, with the best colours around 9 to 10 kilometres along the beach (accessible with a 4wd or Surf and Sand Safari tour) 5486 3131.

Carlo Sand Blow A bush walk up to Carlo Sand Blow is a must for every visitor. Drive to the reservoir at the top of Cooloola Drive. The Blow is an easy 600m walk from the car park or take the longer walk from the National Parks Office. Spectacular views of the Coloured Sands, Double Island Point and Tin Can Bay Inlet are the bonus for your efforts. When the thermals are right, you will often see Hang Gliders taking off and landing at this beautiful piece of Nature’s Sculpture.

Lake Poona After morning tea or lunch in the picnic area you can venture on some wonderful walks to Lake Poona or through some spectacular Rainforest. Allow 40 minutes to reach Lake Poona.

Lake Freshwater Only accessible by 4WD, Tour or Walking. Walking tracks starts at the Bymien picnic area. The round trip from Rainbow Beach will take a full day and requires fitness.

Foreshore Tin Can Bay You can walk 4km from Crabs Creek to Norman Point, over picturesque bridges, signage of flora and fauna, through mangroves, playgrounds and outdoor gyms. It is mostly flat – very safe for children on wheels. Start at the playground opposite the library, cycle to Crabs Creek and stop for a coffee, then return to opposite the library. Enjoy the views out to the inlet while the kids enjoy the playground and skatepark.

Rainbow Beach 10,000 steps walk – from the headland behind the Surf Tower and Playground to Carlo Road. Paths are perfect for bicycles, scooters and skateboards.

Fliers should be of Hang2 standard, fly in north easterly winds and remember landing in the bathing reserve is prohibited.

Probably one of Rainbow’s greatest attractions would have to be the abundant opportunity for fishing. Fishing, in all its styles, is available right on our doorstep.

Beach fishing has unlimited scope with nearly 100kms of beach to choose from.

Varieties include Bream, Whiting, Tailor, Dart, Jew and Flathead.

Estuary fishing in Tin Can Bay Inlet, through the Inskip Point area and up the Great Sandy Strait is perfect for those with a boat or the wish to hire one. Access is from an efficient boat ramp at Carlo Point.

Another ramp is located at Bullock Point.

going home having plenty to fillet. Quality size parrot and husser have been in good numbers and we have been finding more than usual Gold Spot wrasse.

For those that have not tried the wrasse yet, they are beautiful on the table and personally my favourite by far.

Some nice Red Emperor along with pearl perch, Moses perch, sweetlip, cod, and cobia have been filling the eski. Some good snapper also roaming around and unfortunately seem to also be the sharks favourite.

i ALL, so it’s been another crazy month with unpleasant weather, with only small opportunities to get outside. It seems like every year it’s taking longer for the weather to settle into a consistent sort of a pattern.

Mackerel seem to be in good numbers as well for those that like chasing them.

In the straits the squid seem to be picking up and mud crabs have been solid.

No reports of tailor on the beaches yet however been a few Jew and some nice whiting about.

I tried the other night for the first time and landed three Jew, good for a bit of fun. Let’s hope this weather settles now and time to get some great weather in. cheers, Mat

VERY JULY THE mighty Rainbow Beach Family Fishing Classic sets up camp for a week of weigh-ins, tall stories and some mighty good fisherpeople.

The event has now been running for32 years and commences this year on July 19 through to the finale on Saturday July 27.

Traditionally a family event and a good excuse for a week off, the RBFFC will also include live entertainment, sporting activities, a carnival atmosphere and a lot of very exciting prizes.

Now hosted by the Rainbow Beach Sports Club, who recognise the importance of ensuring the event remains sensitive to family affordability, environmental

sustainability and with an emphasis on participation.

With four major classes of fishing – Beach, Reef, Jew and Big Fish – all levels of fishing experience are catered to. The event is expected to attract upwards of 700 competitors and thousands of spectators.

While the event is a wonderful opportunity for locals and tourists to mingle and enjoy each other’s company and expertise, others are convinced they are going to take out a big one this year and go home with the .....?tinny? Tin Can Bay Fishing Club News A S THE WEATHER is now transitioning from summer to winter the predominant summer fish species are becoming less common and hopefully the winter species will come on the chew.

Bream and tailor and some say flathead should become more prevalent on the beaches and in the estuaries.

Although squid have been caught in good numbers they are not widespread at the moment and the small patches of them have to be located.

There are still a few quality mangrove jack, summer whiting and reef species being caught by the persistent anglers.

Whenever there is a bit of fish catching activity on the reefy areas the

underwater telegraph soon invites the large green Toad Fish and shark tax men to the party, for what seems more than their share.

There are also a few school mackerel and tuna in the Inskip to The Bluff area. A large Queenfish was recently caught at Inskip and may be it wasn’t a loner, so keep an eye out for the bait fish patches and the pelagic fish might not be far away.

There are a few quality mud crabs being caught and a few sand crabs have been potted recently.

Anyway let’s blame the election on the fish being a bit apprehensive, as it may determine the future fate of many of their numbers!

Playgroup Mother’s Day Morning Tea

In Brief Construction underway on the Mary Valley Rail Trail The Mary Valley community will soon enjoy their very own rail trail that will provide opportunities for bushwalking, mountain biking and horse riding, with construction expected to be completed by June 2019.

The Mary Valley Rail Trail is the result of significant consultation in the area and will ensure that the existing disused rail corridor connecting the townships of Imbil and Brooloo is repurposed into a valuable recreational facility for locals and visitors alike.

Gympie Regional Councillor Bob Fredman said he is looking forward to the 4.7km trail, which is through a very scenic part of the region, full of native forests and wildlife.

“Rail trails are known to bring social and economic benefits to regional towns because they are not only enjoyed by locals, but also attract visitors from outside the region,” he said.

This project is being undertaken by Gympie Regional Council and is fully funded by the State Government’s Works for Queensland program.

Tin Can Bay RSL Sub Branch Inc. Christine Carroll, Secretary June will be a quiet month for the sub-branch.

The only important event will be the Bi-monthly General Meeting on Saturday 8th June, 8:00am for 8:30am start.

The usual events will take place – first Tuesday of the month is the 4th and is our Carer’s Day – if you are a Carer, or wanting to know how to be a registered carer or someone you may know could find this interesting. It is run by Carer’s Queensland and they could help with NDIS or Aged Care. Open to anyone in the community.

Next we have our Veteran & Community Morning Tea on 11th June, commencing at 10:00am. Last month was a great turnout so get in early for a seat. Again, open to both veterans and community members.

Our regular Sunday BBQ & Raffles is on every Sunday commencing at 12:00pm, with raffles being drawn at 2:30pm. Join us for a burger, Hamburger $6 or Steak $8 and listen to enjoyable music by local musicians.

HE WEDNESDAY SOCIAL table tennis mornings have been running well, with an average of 8-10 players enjoying some excellent rallies,and lots of laughs.

The Wednesday night competition games have restarted, with 12 enthusiastic and committed players.

HE COOLOOLA COAST Youth Activity Project has once again partnered with the Tin Can Bay SSAA to hold archery and air rifle sessions.

On Saturday, June 29 the Rifle Fish Rd Range will be open for youth to try the two target sports.

Both activities are fully supervised by members of the range with all equipment supplied.

There are only limited places for both activities, so be quick to get your name down. Age is open for the archery (provided they can hold a bow and follow safety instructions) however air rifle is restricted to age 11 years and older.

A Little Humour MARRIED IN HEAVEN On their way to get married, a young Catholic couple is involved in a fatal car accident.

The couple found themselves sitting outside the Pearly Gates waiting for St. Peter to process them into Heaven.

While waiting, they began to wonder: Could they possibly get married in Heaven?

When St. Peter showed up, they asked him.

St. Peter said, “I don’t know, this is the first time anyone has asked. Let me go and find out,” and he left. The couple sat and waited, and waited.

Two months passed and the couple were still waiting.

While waiting, they began to wonder what would happen if it didn’t work out; could you get a divorce in Heaven?

After yet another month, St. Peter finally returned, looking somewhat bedraggled.

“Yes,” he informed the couple, “You can get married in Heaven.”

“Great!” said the couple, “But we were just wondering, what if things don’t work out? Could we also get a divorce in Heaven?”

St. Peter, red-faced with anger, slammed his clipboard onto the ground.

“What’s wrong?” asked the frightened couple.

“OH!, COME ON!” St. Peter shouted, “It took me three months to find a priest up here! Do you have any idea how long it will take me to find a lawyer?”

TALKING WITH GOD A man is talking to God. “God, how long is a million years?”

God answers, “To me, it’s about a minute.”

“God, how much is million dollars?”

“To me, it’s a penny.” ”God, may I have a penny?”

“Wait a minute.”

At Sunday School, the children were learning how God created everything, including human beings.

Johnny was especially intent when the teacher told him how Eve was created from one of Adam’s ribs.

Later in the week, his mother noticed him lying down as though he were ill, and said “Johnny, what is the matter?”

Johnny responded, “I have a pain in my side, I think I’m going to have a wife.”

It was Palm Sunday, but because of a sore throat, 5 year old Johnny stayed home from church with a sitter.

When the family returned home, they were carrying several palm fronds. Johnny asked them what they were for.

“People held them over Jesus’ head as he walked by,” his father told him.

“Wouldn’t you know it,” Johnny fumed, “the one Sunday I don’t go and he shows up!”

Two boys were walking home from church after hearing a strong preaching on the devil.

One said to the other, “What do you think about all this Satan stuff?”

The other boy replied, “Well, you know how Santa Claus turned out, it’s probably just your Dad.” Visiting his Grandparents, a small boy opened the big family Bible. He was fascinated as he fingered through the old pages.

Suddenly something fell out. He picked it up and found that it was an old leaf that had been pressed flat between the pages.

“Mama, look what I found,” he called out.

“What have you got there dear?” his mother asked.

With astonishment in his voice, the boy answered, “I think it’s Adam’s underwear!”

A father was reading Bible stories to his young son.

He read, “The man named Lot, was warned to take his wife and flee out of the city, but his wife looked back and was turned into a pillar of salt.”

His son asked “What happened to the flea?”

The Sunday School teacher said to her children “We have been learning about how powerful the Kings and Queens were in Biblical times, but there is a higher power. Who can tell me what it is?”

Tommy blurted out, “I know, Aces.”

VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT A fire started on some grasslands near a farm. The county fire department was called to put out the fire. The fire was more than the county fire department could handle. Someone suggested that a nearby volunteer bunch be called. Despite some doubt that the volunteer outfit would be of any assistance, the call was made.

The volunteers arrived in a dilapidated old fire truck. They rumbled straight towards the fire, drove right into the middle of the flames and stopped!

The firemen jumped off the truck and frantically started spraying water in all directions. Soon they had snuffed out the center of the fire, breaking the blaze into two easily-controlled parts.

Watching all this, the farmer was so impressed with the volunteer fire department’s work and was so grateful that his farm had been spared, that right there on the spot he presented the volunteers with a check for $1,000. A local news reporter asked the volunteer fire captain what the department planned to do with the funds.

“That ought to be obvious,” he responded, wiping ashes off his coat. “The first thing we’re gonna do is get the brakes fixed on our fire truck!”

POLICE BUSINESS Rainbow Beach police officers knocked on a certain door the other day. They asked “Are you familiar with the letters HB?” The occupier said, “No, I’m not.”

“How about LS?” they asked. “No” was the reply”. They then asked, “What about JD?” The occupier said, “Hang on a minute, am I a suspect or something?”

They said, “No, these are just initial enquiries.”

Hi to everyone out there in Rainbow Beach Land.

It has taken a while, but finally it looks like “winter is coming”.

Beau ful days, with snuggle under the blankets nights, every year I can understand why there is such a migra on of people from down south (why would you want to put up with a cold and wet winter?).

I think we have just about had enough of the federal elec on (no more Clive Palmer ads at least) only another 18 months before the state one. Oh, and did I forget the local one? And we’re not over governed?

One thing as a popula on we have learnt, don’t trust the pollsters or the TV. Seems they all get it wrong, Brixet, Trump and now us!

One local commented, “Only another 155 weeks before labour get another chance” with a retort from someone else, “More like 310 before they even get a chance!

Poli cs and religion, nothing divides people be er - and sport and can bring them closer together?

Paul and his girlfriend came up from Brisbane last weekend, we all le� it a li le late to go out for dinner. The only offering for food was take-away pizza (lucky) with that it was let’s go back to our place.

I seemed to be in trouble all next morning up un l he came back up and thanked us on having such a good night - the clean-up was worth it a�er all.

Well, last weekend of local NRL should have probably been called upset round. It does seem all the teams are really close, but some just seem to win when others don’t - and then you have last weekend when all those that don’t do?

“Harder to pick than a broken nose”.

The Lions are going along nicely, I s ll hope I haven’t put the mocker on them as they’re in the top 8.

Daniel Riccardo’s Renault is a bit off the pace. I don’t think I’ve ever seen as many ads for Renault up un l now, s ll don’t think I’ll go out and buy one, though.

Well, that’s it for me this month, it’s Sunday morning and I’m supposed to be ordering fruit and veg (not wri ng an English essay). I’d like to say I enjoyed English at school - so I’ll leave it at that.

It does seem me passes by so quickly, he we are in the middle of another year already! The next me I’ll be wri ng this June/July school holidays will be upon us, Fishing Comp and the run into Christmas on the count down.

Also the start of winter brings us into origin season. “Let the war begin” one commentator said all those years ago, and I don’t think much has changed on and off the field in regards to one of the best series in the world!

S ll not sure on why you would take it to Perth though.

I do understand the NRLs need to expand the game, but it’s QLD v NSW. Archie Gilmore was the lucky staff member at the deli counter when it was photo me this month!
