A PPROXIMATELY 4200 Australian Country Press newspaper readers in rural, regional and outer suburban areas were surveyed recently about the role of local newspapers within their communities. They found there is continued strong demand (and passion) for the printed product in rural and regional Australia. In fact, audiences: • Prefer a printed newspaper, with younger generations also part of this trend.

• Country Press readers overall are 2.6 times as likely to read their local paper in print than in digital format.

• Overwhelmingly view a printed copy of their newspaper as an essential service for their community.

• Are five times as likely to go directly to a local news website for their local news than Google or Facebook.

• Almost 10 times as likely to go to the local newspaper website over a local council website for their local news and information.

• Surprisingly, just 5% of younger audiences say they mostly use social media to find out about local news.

UMPBACK WHALES are now making their annual migration along the east coast, with Rainbow Beach the perfect viewing platform.

Sean Permezel from Epic Ocean Adventures said, “We generally start to see signs of whales migrating north around the Double Island area from June to August and again heading south September / October.

Sean said it is mostly humpbacks we will see, however the National Parks website states Pygmy sperm whales, sperm whales, Melon-headed whales, False killer whales, Minke and Dwarf Minke whales, Bryde’s whales, Pilot whales, Southern Right whales and Pygmy killer whales have also been sighted!

So keep your eyes peeled.

In fact, more than 25,000 whales are expected to swim past Queensland from now until November, as the whales travel from, and return to, the southern ocean.

You can spot them from our viewing platform and lookout, Sandblow, and off the headland at Double Island Point and sometimes our beach.

Unfortunately, whale migrations also mean occasional whale strandings - they should be reported as soon as possible to the Department of Environment and Science on 1300 130 372.

If waiting for expert help to arrive for a stranded whale, people should take care of their own health and safety first, and not attempt to push a stranded whale back into the water. 22 years What brought you to our coast?

I took over the restaurant at Carlo Point for three and a half years. It was called Dock of the Bay, regular fare like seafood and steaks.

Where were you before?

Building in Brisbane.

Hobbies?

Any sport - specifically cricket and Aussie Rules - I played both for years, now I watch. My favourite team is now Brisbane - it was South Melbourne.

What do you like about your job?

It has variety - no two jobs are the same. I haven’t been out of the street since November. I’m in ‘Tinny’ on Monday and start one at The Shores.I stay local when I can.

From submarines to volunteering – what a life!

Y

OU MAY RUN ACROSS Karl Hempstead volunteering at Tin Can Bay Coast Guard or at a committee meeting of the RSL sub-branch, but that’s only a small window into Karl’s amazing life supporting the community.

Karl’s working life started in the Australian Navy in the early 1980s, operating in a range of roles including as an acoustic warfare analyst and as a medic. He served on a number of submarines over 20 years including the HMAS’s Otama, Orion, Otway and Collins.

Karl said it was not unusual for submariners to be at sea for over four months at a time and not get to breathe fresh air during that time. He was awarded the special operations medal and clasp for clandestine operations in the submarine squadron.

Recently the Tin Can Bay RSL was the location for a chance meeting of six former Naval submariners. Karl said that it was rare to have six former submariners meet anywhere in Australia, much less in a small town like Tin Can Bay! The submariners included Pat Cahill, who lives in Victoria but happened to be in Tin Can Bay on holidays for ANZAC Day. It is poignant that the chance submariner get-together

almost coincided with the loss of an Indonesian submarine, crewed by 53 men in the Bali Sea. It highlights the risks faced by our brave armed forces personnel as they serve our country.

After leaving the Navy, Karl joined the Queensland Department of Primary Industries (DPI) as a Land Protection Officer working in partnership with landholders and local government to control pest plants and animals.

He was based in a number of Western Queensland locations including Burketown, Mt Isa, Boulia and St George. He also joined the Army Reserve, ran Army Cadet units and was a driving force in the Burketown SES. In 2019 Karl retired from the DPI and moved with his wife, Julie, to Rainbow Beach initially, and then Tin Can Bay. Karl was keen to continue to support the community so he joined the Tin Can Bay Coast Guard. His current position is Flotilla Administration Officer, a task that keeps him very busy. He is also on the committee of Tin Can Bay RSL subbranch.

As Karl explained, “It’s great to continue with volunteering, which I’ve always done, to help support the community. I love it here, it’s like paradise.”

And we love you Karl – thank you for your service!

The Sandcastle Competition was so popular, Rainbow Beach State School P&C, Sandra Lindenberg (Treasurer), Simone, and Steve Bennett (Principal) and Jed Elmer (President) sold out of sausages!

AINBOW BEACH P&C has hit the ground running with an eventful start to the year, Chappy Ronnie’s fantastic Sandcastle Competition, and more to come!

“We are lucky to have a strong team,” said President Jed Elmer. “As well as record numbers of members signed up to the P&C this year - thanks to all!”

A new executive include Sandra Lindenberg (Treasurer), Tyla Elmer (VP) and Clayton Preston (Secretary).

“The Big Summer Blowout resulted in a whopping $1,600 being raised! Much gratitude to Kroppy and Marnie, and to the few dedicated volunteers who cleaned up and recycled many cans/bottles.”

Variety Jet Trekkers came to school with a large donation and a bonus drone - the lunch by Martine Lokan, the P&C team and volunteers was outstanding.

The P&C are deeply grateful for the donations: Little Parliament, Rainbow Fruit, Rainbow Meats, IGA, Woolworths Cooloola, Ed’s Bakery, RB Community Centre, Deans IceWorx, Sandy Brosnan, Rainbow Pizza, Brent’s Burgers and The Deck.

Monies raised have contributed to the school song Reach for a Rainbow and Barambah camp.

“We are looking forward to creating a rock garden at school, where all students can leave their mark.

We will also invest in revamping the student toilets with positive artwork and affirmations.

Citizen Scientists ‘Blitz’ Nature in Cooloola A

The knowledge gathered and shared was enriched by the contributions of the group of Elders and members of the Butchulla Aboriginal community, the original environmentalists who have been the stewards of Butchulla country for thousands of years.

Ethan Yeoman, our youngest Team Leader at 16 years of age, discovered 48 undescribed species of spiders. Rare orchids, a huge array of weird and wonderful fungi (including a zombie fungi that takes over the bodies of ants) and uncommon plants were also documented. Night field trips recorded many of the area’s rare frogs.

SMALL ARMY of Citizen Scientists packed the Rainbow Beach Community Hall to its capacity of 150 over the weekend of May 14-16 for the annual Cooloola Bioblitz, hosted by Cooloola Coastcare and Fraser Island Defenders Organisation.

Led by 19 incredible scientists and expert amateur enthusiasts with specialties including tiny mosses, fungi, plants, spiders and other arachnids, frogs and insects, these willing volunteers went out day and night to map the biodiversity of this amazing region, using the free iNaturalist App on their phones. You can download it too and contribute sightings of fauna and flora anytime.

The art group, led by Sunshine Coast artist Dion Dior, captured some of the species as they learnt new techniques for nature journaling.

NE FRIDAY NIGHT last month I was sitting at home watching the footy, when a loud bang filled the air outside.

This was soon followed by my dog, Molly, launching across the room and onto my lap.

For the next minute or so more loud explosions followed from the unlicensed display of fireworks occurring somewhere in town, while Molly tried to dig a tunnel under the coffee table.

Fireworks are becoming more prevalent in Rainbow Beach, with impromptu displays occurring most weekends.

Fireworks displays are a great source of entertainment when carried out by competent and licensed operators, however when ‘Joe Blow’ has a few beers and then ignites his illegally obtained fireworks - resulting in a rocket heading for your house or campsite - it’s not such a good experience.

Since 1972 the possession and use of fireworks in Queensland has been restricted to licensed operators, due to the extensive injuries and property damage that resulted from the unregulated use of these explosives.

In the Northern Territory there is one day each year (Territory Day) when it is legal to set off fireworks, and in 2019 on Territory Day, there were reportedly no ‘life threatening injuries’, 17 hospital presentations and 160 calls to the NT Fire and Rescue – this was described as a ‘reasonably good’ year.

There are good reasons it’s illegal to possess fireworks without a licence, and we will prosecute anyone we find with such items.

The illegal use of fireworks is an offence which carries a maximum penalty of $53,380 or six-months imprisonment.

Also, if you are responsible for the loss or injury of an expensive animal through your illegal use of fireworks, you may be responsible for damages.

A few years ago, I had a devastated tourist come to the beat office looking for his beloved dog - which had jumped the fence of his holiday house and run off into the bush after some illegal fireworks were let off in town.

Long story short, he found the dog a couple of days later, badly injured after it had been set upon by some wild dogs. His initial vet bill was already in the thousands of dollars.

So please do the right thing by yourself, your neighbours and the environment – leave the fireworks to the professionals.

UR PLANT OF THE Month is “Petalostigma pachyphyllum”, (commonly known as “Thick leaved Quinine bush”). This is a multi-stemmed shrub to around two metres, with the young growth being hairy. Leaves are alternate and leathery to 7cm.

The flowers from this plant are yellowish in clusters and bloom in winter to spring. The yellow fruit changes to orange-red in spring and is very astringent when ripe. The fruit from this plant is used in the drink “Lemon, lime and bitters”.

Traditionally, the bark and roots of the quinine tree would be prepared into liquids for treating diabetes

and other illnesses, including sores and headaches.

The fresh fruit can be used to ease toothaches, malarial symptoms (including fever) and as a birth control.

This plant enjoys full sun to part shade and is loved by birds and bees.

EFORE I BRING you the report, I have an important plea - we really need sugar, flour, pasta, rice and tinned food - anything you can give would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Rainbow Beach Droughtrunners have had a reasonably quiet month as I recuperate from a recent op and have to take it easy. The last few days got me cranked up as I had an urgent call from a school near Warwick asking for help.

Some families experience great difficulty feeding their children post drought. I hurriedly put together 10 x $50 hampers, plus other food and $800 in vouchers. It was picked up the next day.

Many thanks this month for donations from Leena and Steve from TCBay, Harvey and Pat for jams, Wayne Kerle continues his great work with bottle and can collections, TCBay Bakery tin collection $85, Bill Neal from Cooloola with wooden toy sales $110, and Jim Snee from TCBay with mozzie coil holders.

Many thanks to all our donors and businesses with collection tins.

Another $500 has gone to Fencing for Fires for materials, with $800 in vouchers going to the Childers area.

As I mentioned before, we desperately need those staple food items. If anyone can help we will pick up.

UR MEMBERS have been out and about enjoying themselves attending a range of activities. We held our regular monthly morning tea in Tin Can Bay, but the next one will be at Lindol Macadamia farm at Goomboorian.

The Gene and Judy Concert at the Brolga was followed by lunch at the Carrier Arms. We were pleased to be joined by Pat Smith, who used to be an active member, with her late husband, Gordon.

Members supported the Lions Club Mother’s Day morning tea and discovered the fine singing voice of the Lion’s President, Robert Storrie, and also enjoyed the High Tea to raise funds for the Children’s Hospital Foundation.

The black and white themed decorations were wonderful.

Free health sessions at the Shed

T

HE SHED’S Phoenix Program is all about promoting health and wellbeing and, because this is such an important issue facing many members of the community, this program is now being run on a fortnightly basis.

Last month’s sessions focused on anxiety and depression, and drug and alcohol addiction. The next sessions will be held on June 9 and 23, and will be co-hosted by Joy Black and Bruce Whelan.

Bruce brings a wealth of knowledge to the sessions - he is a retired GP who

has had years of professional experience running clinics for drug and alcohol-related addictions and other issues.

Joy is a professional counsellor and Wellness and Lifestyle Coach, with an extensive background in nursing. Joy currently runs a professional individual consultancy service in Tin Can Bay, as well as personal development courses in small group sessions.

Information is presented by way of slides, handouts and general group discussion.

These sessions are free and available to any member of the community to attend.

All we request is a gold coin donation for

tea/coffee, etc.

In addition to our regular activities including chess/ Rummikub, lathe /scroll saw classes, Macrame and wood working, members now have the opportunity to learn the various facets of welding.

INTER IS HERE, carrying cooler days and the seasonal colds and flu.

It is common knowledge that following a healthy diet full of fruit and vegetables and a clean source of protein, can boost your immunity.

Patrolled Beach Swim in the flags in front of the Surf Lifesaving tower. Walk via the steps or walkway near the lookout and surf club, or drive onto Griffin Esplanade. 4WD beach access begins here.

Coloured Sands Visit the patrolled beach, near the surf tower or the lookout to see the 70 plus colours in our cliffs. From town, walk south 1km along the beach - for best colours 4WD or tour a further 9km.

Remember it is a gazetted road.

Carlo Sand Blow Park at the top of Cooloola Drive, and walk 600m up from the car park or bushwalk about 2km from the National Parks Office for spectacular views of the Coloured Sands, Double Island Point, Tin Can Bay Inlet and hang gliders.

Poona Lake Drive to Bymien Picnic Area (2WD) via 3km gravel on the Freshwater Road, (off Rainbow Beach Road). It’s a 40 minute walk to reach the cool waters of Lake Poona through beautiful rainforest and carrol (grey myrtle) scrub.

Searys Creek Only 7km from town towards Gympie, with 2 waterholes, boardwalks, bridges and history – do read the sign and spot the creatures. Always cool on the hottest of days.

Rainbow Beach Headland A look out, a viewing platform, 2 playgrounds, a skatepark, BBQs and picnic facilities. See the whales from here in season and watch the surfers out the front. Take a photo at the Cherry Venture propeller.

Double Island Point Access via the 4WD only Great Beach Drive or Freshwater Track. See dolphins, whales (seasonal), manta rays, turtles and walk up to our historic lighthouse. It has the longest break in Australia -when the swell lines up.

Mudlo Rocks Wander here at low tide, play in rock pools and watch 4WDs navigate any exposed rocks. ALWAYS check conditions and ask locals before you 4WD - it is not always safe, even close to low tide.

Middle Rock When tides and conditions allow, the walk to Middle Rock and back is a beautiful way to check out the Coloured Sands. From here, vehicle permits are required and dogs are prohibited.

Inskip Point This peninsula is the gateway to Fraser Island, a favourite fishing spot and pet friendly camping grounds for generations.

Only 15 minutes drive (2WD) from Rainbow Beach.

You can launch your boat at Norman Point and Crab Creek in Tin Can Bay or Carlo Point and Bullock Point near Rainbow Beach. All except Bullock Point offer toilet and scenic picnic facilities.

Great Sandy Strait If you love the wonderful peace and relaxation of sailing or cruising, the sheltered waters around Tin Can Bay are for you. You may see dugong, turtles, dolphins and more in this section of the Great Sandy Marine Park.

Fraser and Cooloola Great Walks A 90 km trail showcases natural and cultural features of the world’s largest sand island between Dilli Village and Happy Valley. Or trek 102 km from Noosa to Rainbow Beach through sandblows, past lakes and spectacular views.

Fraser Island K’gari World heritage listed, K’gari has over 40 lakes, rainforests, sand dunes, wildlife, four wheel driving and fishing! Take a 1 or 2 day tour, hire a 4WD or take your own.

Surf club deck resumes building A

SUPPLY ISSUE has delayed the deck progress at the Rainbow Beach Surf Club. The deck roof is the next stage, followed by the new entry and kiosk.

As supply issues continue, no completion date is forthcoming yet - but everyone is looking forward to that first beverage in the new outdoor area!

In the meantime, volunteer surf lifesavers will celebrate at the Annual Dinner and Awards Evening on June 26, at the Surf Club.

Work happens behind the scenes year round to prepare for the next season and to guide the Supporters Club. The club is very grateful to the Rainbow Beach RSL Sub Branch for their generous donation of $287 towards the Nippers, proceeds from the ANZAC Day Breakfast.

RRR... It’s getting cold in the mornings at the Dolphin Centre, but it doesn’t stop the dolphins from visiting.

The volunteers stand in the water during the presentation of information and are finding the water very chilly, but you are only in the water during feeding for a few minutes.

We open at 7am and have viewing of the dolphins until around 7.45am. This gives visitors a chance to hear all about the history and attributes of our Australian Humpback Dolphins. Photographing is welcomed.

We have had visits from another two young dolphins in the creek. They swim in with either Harmony, Ella or Patch.

I think they are checking things out.

One of the dolphins could be ‘Squirt’, who was forced out of the area by the adult males some years ago. We are hoping it is him and he will start feeding from the public as before.

If you have family or grandchildren visiting for the school holidays, please bring them down so they can learn about the dolphins. Remember, if you are a resident you don’t pay admission to the centre, only pay to feed the dolphins.

Review Pro Score averages courtesy of Andrew Saunders from Gympie Regional Council were: Cooloola Coast (across 16 operators listed) - 90.3475 Sunshine Coast - 89.42 Queensland - 88.43 Overall, 11 Rainbow Beach operators met the criteria - nine of those businesses exceeded the state average and seven were above the Sunshine Coast average.

While this is a wonderful result for the coast, most of our operators have received lower scores than 2020 and 2019. So while we are all ahead of the wider region and state, we need to keep working on responding to reviews, getting reviews and improving all aspects of the tourism businesses.

This way we will ensure that we continue to get great recognition as a tourism destination and our share of media and industry famils.

Lifeguard report

ELLO FROM the Rainbow Lifeguards. Winter is setting in and the volunteer lifesavers have finished their duties until September, thank you very much to the Lifesaving team for their commitment to the community and keeping our beaches safe on the weekends the last eight months!

The beaches will continue to be patrolled by the lifeguards seven days a week during winter. We have had some amazing weather lately, with beautiful clean conditions on the beach and lovely sunny days.

Water temperature is still around that 22-23 degree mark. As always the conditions are forever changing at the beach, so please read the conditions board when you come down to the beach.

If you have any questions at all, don’t hesitate to come and chat to the lifeguard on duty.

Always swim between the red and yellow flags.

Celebrating students and volunteers

W

E HAVE HAD a very busy start to term two, which has been amplified due to the number of long weekends.

It was wonderful to witness so many of our students marching with the school as part of the ANZAC Day Parade. I was so proud of the students for the way they represented our school, their families and themselves. I agree with the comments of Mr Greg Walker, President of the Rainbow Beach RSL, “the future is in safe hands”.

I want to give a couple of special mentions, firstly to Mrs Cherie Mason and her choir who performed beautifully at the School and Community Services. I continue to be amazed at the way Mrs Mason can bring the talents of our students to the fore.

Secondly, I would like to acknowledge the efforts of all those year six students that submitted entries in this year’s ANZAC Essay Competition.

Jordan Gough was voted to have been the winning entry in 2021 with an amazing essay that was both well written and insightful. Jordan did a tremendous job reading his essay to those assembled at the ANZAC Day service and was an absolute credit to himself, his family and his school.

We also have managed to host the School Inter-house Cross Country, where Fraser took the bragging rights for 2021. It was good to see so many students participating and putting in a great effort.

We had five students selected based on their competitive times, who travelled to Gympie to compete in the Gympie District Trials. Skye Hanlon, Sonny Bennett, James Bergin, Jordan and Teil Gough all displayed great athletic ability and were very competitive in these trials.

An amazing individual performance again by Jordan Gough saw him selected to compete at the next level of competition, Wide Bay Trials, for which Jordan is training hard for. We all wish him all the very best.

In keeping with the sporting theme, Sonny Bennett competed at the Wide Bay Carnival for Rugby League.

He and his mates from the Gympie District team played some high quality and tough games against teams from across the Wide Bay. They managed a draw against a strong Hervey Bay team, before really tough matches against Bundaberg and South Burnett. All of the boys did an amazing job and can hold their heads up high.

We were especially glad to see one of his team mates make it through to the Wide Bay Team, but hope to get a few more in the team next year.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the volunteers who continue to support our great school. Can I give a special shout out to Mrs Cherie Mason, Mrs Therese Young, Mrs Sandra Lindenberg and Mrs Tyla Elmer. These ladies regularly donate their time, and their contributions to students improving and achieving cannot be underestimated.

I would also like to thank all of the people involved in making presents and running

Visits to the Show, the National Park and our foreshore from Tin Can Bay State School

Year 4/6 Show excursion

AVE YOU EVER wanted to experience country life but didn’t have the time? Well, the Gympie Show had all you could want to see and more.

Year Four and Year Six students from Tin Can Bay State School visited the Gympie Show. Students, teachers and parents travelled by bus to explore the displays and see the sights.

Students enjoyed the cuddly babies in the animal nursery, the crazy variety of chickens and the heart stopping horse jumping. They saw displays about putting out oil fires, how to spin alpaca wool and watched the humongous bulls with rings through their noses!

“My favourite thing was buying show bags,” said Bentley Mackaway.

“I really enjoyed seeing the bulls and horse jumping,” said Chloe Wiersma.

“The birds were cute,” said Madison Katon.

At the end of the day, it was time to explore the show bags and make the tough decision about which ones to buy. We excitedly sifted through our show bags as we made the journey home.

Year 6 trek Visiting the Great Sandy National Park is an experience for everyone. There was great excitement and energy as the Year Six class from Tin Can Bay prepared to embark on a hike through the National Park. Persistent showers did not dampen the enthusiasm of the hiking party as they set off from Carlo Sand Blow.

Regular breaks were had where Don Reid (Rainbow Beach local) explained to the students the many native plant food sources, reed weaving and showed them the breath-taking lookout. The students walked 14km on the first day as they hiked towards Freshwater camping ground, with the highlight being 4WD transport along the beach for the final leg of their journey.

Upon arrival at the camp grounds everyone busied themselves with preparing the camp, erecting tents and bedding, as

a full and beautiful moon crept up over the sea. After eating, the students walked down to the beach to enjoy the serenity and beauty of the deserted beach, lit by the stunning full moon that reflected across the ocean.

Sunrise the next day saw the students packing up camp and beginning preparations for the 9km hike that was ahead of them.

Blisters were wrapped, soreness rubbed out, and with a little less enthusiasm, the hiking party departed for home.

Once the group reached the serenity and coolness of the rainforest, spirits and the pace picked up as students hiked past Poona Lake and into the pick-up area at Bymien Park.

The class enjoyed the camp immensely as they learnt how to work together through adversity, pain and exhaustion.

Prep foreshore excursion

HAT A WONDERFUL morning Prep had observing and exploring our local foreshore and park.

We collected many materials from the environment which created great

discussions around texture, weight, size and whether or not they would float.

We then added these to our amazing sandcastles that we created. Memories made and heaps of fun had by all.

Tin Can Bay Fishing Club

ITH THE WEATHER turning colder it looks like “office-hours-fishing” for all but the keenest anglers. That said, there are opportunities for good catches made possible by planning fishing expeditions around the tidal conditions for the species you target.

The squid are still a bit patchy, but some good individual catches are being made by those willing to put in the time to find the combination match of tidal movement, jig presentation and colour.

The first couple of hours of the run-out tide usually works well but good catches can be made at other times of the tide; the main criteria is to have your jig in the water and not at home in the tackle box.

Fishing, Boating & the Great Outdoors Tuna of various species have been feeding aggressively throughout the bay, often for most of the day. Casting metal lures or weighted clouser-type jigs at the feeding schools or trolling various lures in the general area where the fish are feeding, has recently led to some really good catches.

A beautiful Longtail tuna was caught this month, by jigging a soft plastic lure on one of the deeper reefs in the bay.

If a tuna is unable to be released (in good condition) after the battle, remember they are a good eating fish.

Fillet and skin the fish then cut out the dark meat, cut the chunky part of the fillet into steaks about two centimeters thick, lightly sprinkle with salt and ground pepper and place on a hot oiled BBQ plate for a couple of minutes each side.

Alternatively, tuna can be cut in thin slices and put in a basic smoker/ cooker and then enjoyed hot or cold with your favorite adult beverage.

While you have the smoker out, try cutting a couple of squid into strips and smoking them for a tasty snack. By the way, don’t waste the tuna

skeleton as it makes excellent crab bait and may entice a mud crab to feed when they can be a bit quiet in the cooler months.

The reefy areas and ledges in the bay have been producing a mixed bag of reef species as well as a few quality cod for those who fish the tide changes.

There are quite a few sharks and large green toad fish (which I am fairly certain are employed by the local tackle supplier) nipping off hooks and rigs causing a bit of grief, but despite that…get out, wet a line and share the experience.

HIPWRECKED IN 2005, the sailing yacht, Mainstay, floundered on the beach at the Coloured Sand Cliffs. The Community News reported: In the early hours of Monday, March 7th, Mainstay, an 18 tonne yacht from Mooloolaba ran aground between Rainbow Beach and Double Island Point in complete darkness. The crew of four miraculously avoided serious injury from the impact which edged the 9 tonne keel in the sand and tore it from the vessel.

The rigging was snapped and the hull damaged as the surf rolled the boat to shore. The Rainbow Beach Recovery team retrieved the 56-foot vessel in a race against the tide and soft sand.

They couldn’t get the long heavy load up the steep southern vehicular beach access and so had to drive it through the bathing reserve area to the northern beach access…. Repairs to the million dollar yacht are estimated to cost $300,000.

Owner Lynette Troughton said, “After about four hours of walking up the beach we eventually reached Rainbow Beach Township. Four hungry bedraggled sailors.”

The group arrived at the Groovy Grape, where she said their hunger was satisfied. So much so, she would like to include a photo of the cafe in her story of Mainstay’s last voyage, and what she says “was a terrible financial disaster”.

HE RAINBOW BEACH Double Triathlon will be held on a new event date, July 31 - August 1.

Rainbow Beach Triathlon is a unique event offering athletes the opportunity to compete in an Olympic distance event over two days by completing a ‘sprint distance’ 750/20/5* triathlon on the Saturday afternoon and then another of the same distance on Sunday morning.

This is Run Queensland’s most popular event outside the Blackall 100, and is already nearly half sold out before promotion began. So make haste if you are keen for this one (11km, half marathon and marathon).

Participants can choose to enter either the ‘double’ race or just one, as an individual or as a team event.

Entries are limited.

NTRIES HAVE been flooding in for the Rainbow Beach Trail Festival, to be held on August 7.

LUB CHAMPIONSHIPS are now in full swing. Some disruptions occurred due to the course being unplayable as a result of wet weather.

The ladies unfortunately had wet weather during Country Week being played at Bribie Island and Caboolture - so consequently weren’t able to bring home any trophies.

The ladies have several Open Days in June: Cooroy, Maroochy River and Headlands, Presidents Cup Noosa; Tin Can Bay will also be hosting a PRO AM on July 6.

No doubt our southern state golfers will be coming to Rainbow Beach and Tin Can Bay in the next few months.

All Golf Australia handicapped players are welcome in our competitions. The Country Club also offers Holiday Memberships - enquire at the Front Desk.

HAT A GREAT weekend at Lake Kawana for the Coast to Coast Dragon Festival. Teams from Sydney, Melbourne and Tasmania were attendees in this festival. Our Coach, Sandy Wooster, and Club Treasurer, Sandra Binnie, were volunteers for this meet.

Coach Sandy brought back some great paddling tips.

We proudly celebrated the birthday of our first octogenarian club member. Well known Tin Can Bay stalwart, Norma Sanderson, will celebrate her 80th birthday on that day.

Norma is our senior sweep (e.g. the one who steers with the big oar at the back of the boat). A steerer needs to be mentally alert and have knowledge of the rules/laws of the waterways and tides.

You also need to be physically fit and have the stamina to turn/corner a 20-seater-long Dragon Boat. Not for the faint hearted! Once the boat is on the water the steerer is in charge of the boat.

Norma is our club’s inspiration and role model....the perfect example of “if you don’t use it you’ll lose it”.

What a great reason to come and try Dragon Boating!

Along with Dragon teams from Hervey Bay and Bundy, we were in 1770 to compete in the first of the Wide Bay Series of Dragon Boating. We love this series!

And then on June 26/27 they will all be here in Tin Can Bay, when we will host our turn of the series. Make sure you are there!

With housing prices going through the roof, it’s a wonder how our young people are supposed to buy a home. I do know it’s a conten ous issue (especially if you are an industry superannua on fund), but what about using some of it as a house deposit... (I’m sure someone will try to jus fy giving it to someone else to lose, I mean invest, sorry, mixed up my words!).

What’s going to happen when they do open the borders again? I already know of a couple from England whose children are already here who are planning to try to emigrate. We all know what happens when you throw a few dollars around, especially if you’re a cricketer, I mean sportsperson.
