All we have to mark the flutter of this new season, are welcome cooler nights and the windy aftermath of ex-Tropical Cyclone Oma. After scaring away most of our tourists, she has left the impact on our coast. But you’ll find more twists and entertainment in our March edition, from turtles to a new Vinnies op shop, and everything in between. There’s so much to share with you this month - as a gym member, you’ll be pleased with the classes available to you now - including Aqua Aerobics. And you read it here first - Retro Aerobics is coming to the Sports Club! Who’ll join me? There’s also more new sessions from Pilates to Physio! But we do hope for those out west, who are still, unbelievably in drought, a respite to your “sunburnt country”… “Land of the rainbow gold, For flood and fire and famine She pays us back threefold. OOD NEWS is this winter we’ll see more of the Foreshore Plan rolled out with a new Viewing Platform at Phil Rogers Park! Brian Garrad from Gympie Regional Council is looking for public input on the deck like seating, shade and accessibility. The location of Phil Rogers Park is to the east of the Surf Lifesaving Club and across the road from the Rainbow Beach Holiday Village, so is central for tourists and sightseers visiting the Rainbow Beach area. Brian said, “The purpose of the viewing platform is to provide the public with a place that offers photo opportunities for wedding parties and other celebrations, and a platform for seeing and photographing the magnificent views of Double Island Point, the Coloured Sands and Fraser Island.” The proposed works include: • Provision of a platform constructed of resilient materials using a low maintenance grated decking material

• Discrete lighting to delineate the viewing platform without obscuring the night views The works will involve the construction of the platform itself where pylons will be bored and pre-manufactured elements assembled.

• Ramp/s to facilitate access for all users

Concrete paths will be formed up and laid. It is expected that minimal noise will be generated during day time working hours only.

Queensland Government’s Works for Queensland program. The budget for the project is $200,000 and is wholly funded by the Works for Queensland program. Construction work is planned to commence in May 2019 and will take approximately one month. Delivery of the viewing platform is to be before the end of June 2019. So what about the Beach Stairs?

These words are direct from the Council report, and it is not looking promising: The beach access stairs constructed at the southern end of Phil Rogers Park in 2015 have been closed since early 2016 when the lower foundations partially failed. There were calls at the time to re-open the stairs as soon as possible, although these requests have since diminished.

To progress the viewing platform project and to investigate possible locations for beach access stairs, an engineering consultant was engaged to conduct a geomorphological study. The bad news is the preference is to not reinstate beach access at Phil Rogers Park. Key findings: • The best location for the viewing platform and also for beach access stairs, if they are to be provided, is identified as shown below. • The location of the existing stairs is not suitable due to the under-mining of the coffee rock at the base. • Shoreline movement in the area has been slow in recent years. (Records assessed from 1972 onwards). However, all locations along the park frontage experience highly variable beach levels. • There are no locations where access to a permanent dry beach is possible. Any stairs will be subject to direct wave impact in storms and high tides. • If provided, stairs should be modular so that lower sections can be removed prior to a storm to reduce the frequency of damage. Alternatively very large rocks could be placed in front of the stairs to encourage wave break to reduce the direct force on the stairs. • A path option was also considered. The path option would be via the old boardwalk and through the sand blow in the National Park. This would be a lengthy route and would require approval from National Parks and Wildlife, which may not be forthcoming. This option

was not recommended. While the report did not rule out stairs, it clearly identified the risk of regular damage due to wave impact. Removing sections of the stairs prior to storms or king tides is not practical. The placement of large rocks to provide partial protection is not preferred and, in any case, may not achieve the necessary approvals. The report also discussed safety of people on the beach at low tide with vehicles below the Surf Club. For these reasons, a pedestrian path could be investigated to connect the proposed viewing platform with the existing beach access near the surf club house. The existing stairs and boardwalk would be removed and useful components salvaged for possible re-use in a future Council project.

HE NEXT Sunfish Kids Fishing Days are on Sunday March 31 and April 14. One of the TCB Fishing Club’s objectives include teaching our juniors how to fish, to have fun and to enjoy recreational fishing. We hold two Sunfish Kids Fishing Days each year and accommodate up to 25 juniors between 7-15 years of age at each of these events. These events are sponsored by Sunfish Queensland and run by qualified Sunfish Instructors from within the club and with assistance provided by TCB Fishing Club Blue Card Holder members. These days are provided at no cost to the participants and they are taught

how to tie knots, rig a rod, plus baiting and casting, and then fishing the tidal area at Norman Point. In addition to this, they are presented with a new rod and reel, a tackle box and a Certificate of Attendance plus water, morning tea and a hearty BBQ lunch. Registration is essential as places are limited and at least one responsible adult is required to accompany their child throughout the entire activity. Vinnies Rainbow Beach is now open!

ISA BAKER, the Retail Operations Manager, St. Vincent de Paul, Northern Diocese spoke with Community News about the new Vinnies store in Rainbow Beach. “We saw Rainbow Beach as a fantastic opportunity to go into a community that would benefit so much from having us there. We provide not only the best shopping experience ever but also open our doors welcoming locals to come and join us by volunteering. “In return, we provide them with a beautiful, up-to-date and modern store, a positive and happy work environment, the opportunity to meet new friends and give back to their local community as the same time. “We also provide the opportunity for everyone in the community to donate their unwanted goodies in the safe knowledge that we use all these valuable donations to provide funds for those in our communities that are in need, and for many other programs the Society funds.” Vinnies would love volunteers. For businesses and accommodation houses, Lisa said, “We would love to be their first point of call to come and collect any unwanted goods, lost property items, furniture or larger items. We have the ability to service everyone on a regular basis as we have a truck fleet that will be in the Cooloola Coast area at least twice a week. “Anyone wanting to establish an ongoing relationship with us by regularly donating will be rewarded with a consistent and convenient way to remove those items,

knowing that they are being recycled into the community and not collecting dust somewhere or, even worse, going to landfill.” Alex and the team are super keen to become a huge part of the communities of Rainbow Beach, Tin Can Bay and Cooloola Cove and would like to invite everyone to

Coastcare help our turtles W

ILD SEAS ERODING beaches in February mean that turtle nests on our beaches have been exposed and precious eggs lost in the rough seas. If you see the white golf ball sized eggs poking out of the sand, please call the Cooloola Coastcare TurtleCare Leader, Joan Burnett on 0407 810 510. Thanks to a local Rainbow Shores resident, Murray Sambell, for the call out on February 19. Although we were unsuccessful in saving the eggs from the pounding waves, we appreciate your efforts to contact us, Murray. Let’s hope these eggs were mature enough that when they were swept away, the nearly ‘baked’ eggs hatched some little turtles at sea. Turtles generally hatch from between January to March so keep a

lookout on Rainbow Beach and report them to us please. Each turtle lays between one and four clutches of eggs within an area, so although this nest was lost, there may be many more eggs still waiting to hatch. Turtle hatchlings weigh only 15-30 grams at birth and measure 5-7 centimetres on average. We welcome calls when walkers spot exposed eggs at risk, evidence of recent hatchings, nesting turtles, or turtles who are injured or even dead. All of these can provide data for our scientific research and our well-trained TurtleCare Leader can collect the data for submission to the research team at Mon Repos. World Day of Prayer This year The World Day of Prayer is at the Veterans and Community Hall at Cooloola Cove at 10am. Run by the Tin Can Bay Community Church, there will be a focus on country of Slovenia and morning tea afterwards. All welcome.

International Women’s Day Tin Can Bay QCWA Branch will be celebrating the world wide event at their Coffee, Chat and Craft morning tea from 10am. National Ride to School Day This is the perfect opportunity for Australian students and school communities to embrace a healthier start and to try walking and riding to school. The purpose of National Ride2School Day is to show school communities riding to school is an easy and fun activity. It is a chance to celebrate and prove it can be done.

New directions for the

Sports Club

The Rainbow Beach Sports Club has been under new management now for one year. There’s a new team, new initiatives - even a rodeo! We talk to General Manager, Nathan Kropp (Kroppy) who tells us there are more exciting things to come.

T’S BEEN 12 MONTHS since Kroppy has taken over from Rick Modin as General Manager, who continues his support for the club whilst on long-service leave. Angela McGrath is assistant manager, “Neilo” is still head chef, and they welcome Chef Madison Head, who worked for Kroppy at Woodgate. The restaurant has two apprentices and four chefs! The club employs almost 30 people in this town. A committee guides the functioning of the club, Kroppy said, “Ronnie Mason has been sworn back in as president, Paul Arthur is vice president, Darryl Fitzgerald is the treasurer/secretary taking over after Leeroy Jones, who on retirement from the force has also stepped down from this role in the club, after 16 years of service! “Howard Stokes has kindly taken on the patron role from Ruth Modin - her service to the club is endless!” Kroppy stated. “Then on the committee is Greg Pearce, Marnie Kropp, Graham Hull and Kosta Ladas.”

Bec’s gym classes will soon integrate with BJ’s at the Aquatic Centre.” Kroppy explained how Rainbow Beach operates differently to most public pools in the region, it is not Council run, and it is heated, so is open all year. “It costs $300,000 plus to have the pool and the gym operating. People need to engage and start using it. It really is ‘sink or swim’!” Kroppy knows the potential is there for it be a hub for the community. They are working hard to reduce any barriers for locals - including direct access to the pool when it is opened, a range of morning and evening classes, and the welcome addition of air conditioning, which they want installed by Christmas. “From our side, we’ve got to give people the service. When we offered ten classes each week, the gym grew. “Classes have now increased (see the timetable on the Club page) - with different times and options for everyone. You’ll be able to finish your session with a swim! “The gym hours will be pool hours for casual visitors - Monday to Friday 6.3011am, Monday to Thursday 3-6pm, and Saturdays 9am-2pm. Sundays are beach days for our team. The gym will still be operational for members 24/7.”

Friday afternoon mixed bowls Col Mills is the new games co-ordinator, and has had long involvement with the club. Col has lived in Rainbow Beach since 1976, when he remembers there was only a bowling green and toilet block. He thinks it is at least eight years since social bowls has been played, and he’s happy to see it back. “We’ll try to get more members involved, and encourage people to come and play. Our new manager is going to persist in every way possible to the get the bowls up and running again,” said Col. “We’ll start with once a week. Anyone is most welcome - visitors, women. No skill is needed. My grandson is playing here with his grandmother - it’s his first go. “We can organise coaching, too. Older bowlers will come down and give a hand,” Col promised. The Lawn Bowls Pairs Roll-up is on every Friday afternoon at 1pm, at $10 per person. This is not barefoot bowls, so not for kids. Contact Stevie Hebberd 0423 336 411 for more information.

Friday night entertainment Did you know the Double Draw Rainbow Lotto is up to $2700 as we wrote this? Also worth coming to Friday nights at the Sports Club, is that entertainment is back. Kroppy is keen to keep the locals satisfied with a great line-up of artists, too.

Bull and Bronc Spectacular “There’s myself, Shane Handy from the Rainbow Beach Surf Club and Andrew McCarthy from Rainbow Beach Horse Rides - we three parties got together to present the Bull and Bronc Spectacular on April 27,” said Kroppy. There will be a full night of rodeo action - a part of the The National Rodeo Association and Xtreme Rodeo Events calendar series, he says thanks to Andrew and Zak McCarthy’s involvement in the sport.

Little Kickers is a great ‘kick start’ to the day, with the activity and breakfast, they’ll be ready to focus in class - now offering afternoon sessions, great for busy parents!

Kroppy was so impressed how the two clubs worked together at the Country at the Beach, with surf club volunteers at the bar and the Surf Club benefitting. “People are volunteering already - with toilet brushes ready! Andrew will organise the rodeo, Shane the bar and I will oversee the whole event.” (By that he means his partner Marnie, too!) “All events will be in the centre block now - Council is being very supportive,” and no wonder - Kroppy has all events self funded, with all profits funnelled back into the community. Tickets now available for the Rainbow Beach Bull and Bronc Spectacular held April 27, with gates open from 3pm. There’s live music, food stalls, bar and the

Then there is the Fishing Classic with $100,000 in prizes, giveaways and promotions, to write in your calendar July 19-27. They want to resurrect the club as a wedding venue and bring more corporate 1- or 3-day functions. Kroppy says if he adds more major events Marnie will strangle him!

“The Rockabilly event is moving to the centre block - it’s growing,” smiled Kroppy. “We hope to double in size this year! Creative Cuts Sneeky Pete at the Country Club

“Sneeky Pete” is a Gympie covers band, having played throughout South East Queensland for the last 30 years. They’ve entertained at many venues and functions from pubs, clubs, formal balls and major events to countless weddings and private parties. The Sneeky Pete Band play a wide range of styles and genres of music, built around a solid base of classic hits. They also focus on keeping things fresh by including selected songs by current artists. Some band members have come and gone over time, but the engine room of Mr Noel Prowd on drums and Bob Tryhorn on bass, has provided that constant heartbeat and groove. The last few years have seen John “The Pom” Watson on Tenor Sax add a new

dimension to the band’s sound. Also eagerly joining the latest reincarnation is Ian Campbell on rhythm and lead guitar. Further additions of John on acoustic guitar and Ian on blues harp and ukulele, bring still more variety to the band’s polished sound. Putting the icing on this musical cake is the fact that all four members alternate taking the lead vocal on songs and carefully arranged harmonies add yet another level to their performances. Several songs even feature the full complement of four-part vocal harmonies! Through his childhood, G.B. Fox was always in school choirs and winning talent quests, singing and playing his ukulele. At 15 he joined his first band, adding guitar, bass, harmonica and drums to his abilities. By 19 he was among Auckland’s top musos with a residency in one of that city’s top clubs and a song on the radio. In 1981 he moved to Australia, joined the Sunshine Coast’s top band and found himself supporting Australia’s leading touring acts including Midnight Oil, Divinyls, Cold Chisel, The Angels and many overseas acts such as Canned Heat and Bo Diddley. From here he toured from the Gold Coast to Darwin with a number of different line-ups, enjoying a good deal of popularity and getting another song on the air. Glenn, having always been a prolific songwriter, decided in 1988 to form an original band. ‘Abstrax’ won numerous band battles, with Glenn winning the 1994 ‘Most Outstanding Vocalist’ award from the Australian Academy of Music. He has since taken up sequencing, programming and multi-track recording and has added violin to his instrumental abilities. These skills allow him to have a full backing sound and to play a wide variety of music styles. He now boasts a fine repertoire to cater for young and old from country to rock, from fast to slow and from dinner to dance. Singer guitarist, GB Fox brings rock and roll, country and blues from the 50s to the 80s at the Tin Can Bay Country Club, March 15 from 6pm.

CCO Concert at Tin Can Bay Community Hall The first concert of the year by the Cooloola Community Orchestra for their faithful and enthusiastic audience of the Bay community will be held at the Tin Can Bay Community Hall, on Sunday, March 24, 2pm. The orchestra began rehearsing at the end of January with a brand new modernised repertoire. A medley of James Bond melodies will revive memories of thrilling films. The Wild West is represented by The Magnificent Seven, and for those who are right up with what’s happening, there is The Best of Bruno Mars and Capriccio Espagnole for those more classically inclined. The orchestra’s new conductor is Carmen Smith, locally born and bred. She came back to live and work in Gympie after years of teaching music in Gladstone, and brings plenty of experience and

inspiring energy to the job. The Gympie Strings, made up of the string section of the orchestra, have also put a new program together, with works by Grieg and Mozart, but mixing it up with the Pineapple Rag by Scott Joplin, and a tune by Metallica, to be up to date. Alex Pattri, a strong and experienced violinist, is leading the group from the desk. There will be, as usual, solos and small groups performing, all members of the orchestra demonstrating their special skills and adding variety and spice to the concert. Afternoon tea will be served at the interval, and the audience can look forward again to a very entertaining afternoon indeed. Admission is adults $12, concession $10, families (2 adults 2 children) $25.

HE RAINBOW BEACH Memorial Classic was held in January this year, which was a perfect time to have it. The sun was shining, surfers were out and there were even a few waves, but you know what surfers are like! Could have been bigger! There were at least 70 locals on the beach that day with 45 of them surfing in the Classic - it was great to see. We started off our day at 7am over Double Island Point. The presentation was held at our new Clubhouse, Brent’s Burgers, and they did a fantastic job with catering and looking after us as everyone was a bit tired that afternoon. A big shout out goes to Kroppy from the Rainbow Beach Sports Club, without him none of this would have been possible. The boardriders thank you! Winners of the Memorial Surf Classic 2018/19 season are:

HIS ISSUE WE look at photographing Double Island Point. This rocky headland stands over 90m above the surrounding Coral Sea (Pacific Ocean) and delivers stunning views of Wide Bay to the north and Teewah Beach to the south. Vehicular access is restricted, but local operator Surf & Sand Safaris provide access through guided tours which include a beach drive to Double Island Point, Lighthouse visit, drive south along Teewah Beach to the Freshwater Track, then a forest drive along the Freshwater through the national park back to Rainbow Beach. These tours are great options for photographers.

If you’re keen on foot power, you can walk up to the Lighthouse. Access is by road from the Teewah Beach side. Care is required when exploring the headland. There is no access to the lighthouse. Should there be a Seafood Festival? T

HE TIN CAN BAY Chamber of Commerce and Tourism is inviting all businesses, organisations and community members to an open forum to discuss the future of festivals in Tin Can Bay. “The cancellation of the 2018 Seafood Festival has left a hole in the Cooloola Coast calendar. The Chamber wants to take a community approach to moving forward with major events,” President Jess Milne explained. “The economic environment in the bay has changed over the last 20 years. A clear definition needs to be established on the theme of major events to capitalize on the tourism marketing benefit.” The Chamber is seeking input and discussion from all stakeholders to secure a successful festival future.

With an abundance of natural attractions the area has to offer there are many opportunities to ‘celebrate’ local lifestyle. Chamber also wants ideas for complementary events to be incorporated either on the day or during the same time period such as local tours, workshops and information sessions. The outcome of the forum will set the future of festivals in Tin Can Bay so please mark Thursday March 14 on your calendar and come along to the Tin Can Bay Country Club at 6pm filled with enthusiasm and ideas. Surf coaches turn skate dudes Sarah Booth Rainbow Beach Learn to Surf

S WELL AS teaching others, coaches from Rainbow Beach Learn to Surf have been working on their own surf skills and have found extra activities to improve their surfing. We have been skating! Can you imagine adults taking up skateboarding? Well it’s been fun and a laugh but also serious training. Coach Dean has started to master skills on the skateboard through researching and learning how to make it work in with surfing. We are partnering up with a surf-skate trainer company to bring this component into our surfing groups – kids learn to surf, our lady sliders’ (ladies long boarding plus extras) surfing group, and other sessions where participants require help to master skills in the water. Which leads us to our adventures for Term One. We are setting up another round of Kids Learn to Surf for kids 8-12 years old. We are teaching learn to surf skills, surf safety, beach safety, surf awareness, and progressing the kids along with their

surfing according to their ability. We will also be able to incorporate surf-skate training into the program for variety, and skills transferable to surfing. So we are looking for more kids for our surf team! Get in touch ASAP to sign them up for the term and get them into the water. Programs will continue all year, but this is the term where the water is still warm and the days are long. Our coaches are ASI (Academy of Surfing Instructors) Accredited and hold Blue Cards (working with children), Senior First Aid, Surf Rescue Certificates plus experience in other sectors such as fitness, sport, and more. Parents can stay and get involved, watch, or leave the kids to the coaches. It’s a great time to get them started! AST MONTH THERE was a French action movie being secretly filmed right here in Rainbow Beach. If you ever get to see it, the particular scene involves a ute being driven at speed along the beach below the iconic Carlo Sandblow…

In the scene, which was filmed using a drone behind the vehicle, two of the main female characters are standing on the external sidesteps holding onto the roofracks as they race down the beach, their hair flying in the wind…Cars coming in the opposite direction can be seen swerving out of the way and beeping as the ute flies past… At this point, a police car comes into the frame and pulls alongside the speeding vehicle, activating the lights and sirens…the driver takes a long time

to notice the police vehicle but eventually pulls over… The police vehicle, in case you hadn’t guessed, was mine – and the would-be filmmakers couldn’t understand what I wanted until I yelled “cut!” and made a chopping motion with my hands… As I approached the car I established that the film producer / drone cameraman / stunt driver were, in fact, all one and the same person! Driving with his knees, he reasoned, enabled him to focus on the ‘more important task’ of flying the drone, so as to get the perfect shot… As I chatted to said film producer / drone cameraman / stunt driver, he momentarily forgot that the drone was still flying…As he reached for his licence I heard the buzzing sound of the drone

approaching – followed by the clattering of propellers as it smashed into the back of the ute… The buzzing sound stopped and the drone fell to the ground, lifeless. There was then a dramatic pause as we gathered around the drone, crumpled on the beach at the back of the vehicle. There was a moment of silence as the realisation dawned: this $2,500 drone would not be coming back to life…

Distractions of any kind can be fatal. Inattention itself is a contributing factor in a staggering 78% of car crashes, so it’s worth eliminating distractions like drones (or, more commonly, phones…) I love a good action movie…but I’d prefer to see less of the horror shows we keep seeing on our roads…

I couldn’t help but think this was a small price to pay for such reckless driving – the drone could easily have captured footage of a far more tragic ending… These amateur film makers had put us all (not just themselves) at an increased risk of crash due to their “inattention”.

Do you need a ground cover?

ROUND COVERS are a living mulch. They have similar benefits to mulch, such as inhibiting weeds and retaining soil moisture, but in addition provide visual interest. Our plant of the month is Viola hederacea (Native violet), a ground cover that spreads from runners. It has kidney shaped leaves and white and purple flowers. Ground covers vary in height from around a metre to ground hugging. Some form a thick mat, some ramble, while others clump. If different types of ground cover are used, the result will be a range of forms, textures, leaf shapes and colours. Consider your site and the effect you want to create in choosing your ground covers and allow space for the different plants to grow and spread at their own pace, as planting a vigorous creeper beside a slow clumper might cause the

S I WRITE of course most discussion taking place is of the terrible floods and shocking loss of livestock, fencing and the loss of beloved animals by farming families in the North. Some stories I have heard are beyond repeating, it makes you sick in the guts ... Still the Queensland drought is far from over with many areas receiving little or no rain. I hope everyone realises about 3/4 of the state is still in drought and a lot of NSW. Just returning from Victoria I have passed through many districts and spoken to some farmers facing no future and others in parts of Victoria that are in great shape. Whilst in Victoria, I posted a letter in a Western District paper and have returned with some much needed donations. Whilst talking of donations I must thank the TCB CWA,Wayne in TCB for collecting, the TCB Blackpowder-Sporting SAA, the Falconer family, Cindy in Gympie, Bev Yeoman, Betty Freeman, Bill Neil, TCBay Craft Club, Kay Shaw, Jean and Ces, and the IGAs also for collecting. OOLOOLA COAST PROBUS Club Members are looking forward to the Annual General Meeting on Monday, March 11, at the Sandcastle Motel, followed by the Changeover Lunch on Monday, March 25 at the Tin Can Bay Country Club. Pam Carlson, Probus Association of Queensland Liaison Officer and Probus South Pacific Ambassador, will induct the new committee for 2019-20. At the same time, Club Members will celebrate the 10th Anniversary of the Club being formed, chartered on February 19, 2009, when 23 members were inducted – John Olson being elected inaugural president and a current member. Last month fifteen C.C. Club members attended the annual Ecumenical Service at the Wesleyan Church in Gympie. Wide Bay Probians representing two Gympie

Clubs, two Maryborough Clubs and one club from Hervey Bay witnessed a most enjoyable service, which included a special blessing of the Collars of Office of all Club Presidents at the Service. A delicious morning tea was served with time to mingle and chat with fellow Probians. One of the great things about Probus is that members have the opportunity to make new friends of fellow Probians at various functions. Campaign for hospital raised in Parliament The campaign for improved health facilities on the Cooloola Coast has been taken to the State Parliament in Brisbane. Member for Gympie, Tony Perrett, asked the Minister for Health, Steven Miles, to support the establishment of a multi-disciplinary centre on the Coast. Mr Perrett said, “Given that health services in the Gympie region will be further reduced with the announced closure of the Gympie Private Hospital, it is time to investigate all options to deliver improved health services. “1,708 petitioners have called on the government to step up and support a community hospital to give locals the same level of health care that other Queenslanders receive. “The region’s permanent population of 6,500 swells by thousands during the peak tourist season. “Patients are forced to travel significant distances for many basic health care treatments that could be performed in a local community hospital. “A multi-disciplinary centre with day surgery, short stay ward, and an accident and emergency unit would ease the burden of patient travel and provide services that are available in towns with populations as low as 2,000 people,” he said.

Australian app helps clean up the neighbourhood Dumped rubbish, abandoned trolleys, graffiti, and the list goes on. There are many causes of frustration for residents in any community as they go about their day. Yet for most people, whilst the issue is annoying, having the time to report it or the knowledge to know where to report is too hard, so often the issue is never addressed. As easy to use as its name suggests, smartphone app Snap Send Solve allows anyone located in Australia or New Zealand to report an issue in just 30 seconds and have it automatically sent to the correct council or authority for repair. Today, more than 500 councils and authorities are registered to receive reports and the app has been downloaded over a half million times, with the residents of Gympie embracing the technology with a 25% increase in the number of reports made in the past year alone. Snap Send Solve CEO, Danny Gorog says he came up with the idea for Snap Send Solve after he took his son to the local park and he couldn’t use the swing as it was broken but he didn’t know what to do about it. “Users really seem to love the app as it as they see prompt action taken, whilst councils and authorities appreciate the ability for the reports to easily connect with their existing systems, allowing them to automate requests and respond quickly.” Snap Send Solve is available on the App Store or Google Play. Gympie region residents are already using a new App to help fix problems they see!

Our BBQ also is continuing on Sundays with live music by local musicians. Joan is commencing meals on the first Saturday in March, this will be a trial for every Saturday. A lot of people will know Joan from when she previously made meals at the sub-branch and Friday nights at the little Bowling Club.

Welcome back to Rainbow Beach State School Principal Dan Stanieg

HOPE EVERYONE had a great summer vacation and are ready to tackle the 2019 school year. It was great to see so many happy students and parents on day one. It wasn’t until I became a parent that I realised why parents looked so happy when dropping their children off on the first day of school after the summer vacation. I thought the parents were just happy to see me! As of day four of the 2019 school year, we had 88 enrolments. We are predicting these numbers will remain the same for day eight and our staffing will be consistent with how we have started the year. We welcome our new families to our fantastic school. Due to the numbers of the Prep/1 class, I have decided to separate the year ones from the preps on four mornings a week. Ms Margetts will teach the year ones, concentrating on English and Mathematics within the Australian Curriculum. Mrs Chamberlain will deliver the Prep curriculum on these mornings, before the preps and years ones join back together after lunch. This decision will

allow our students the best opportunity to reach their learning outcomes. We will reassess this program at the end of semester one. At the end of 2018, students were invited to apply for our 2019 RBSS school leadership roles. The students were put through a rigorous application process, which culminated in them speaking in front of the school about their leadership qualities. This can be a daunting process and I would like to thank all our applicants. Anybody who witnessed the speeches on that day left the room in awe of the effort and application of all of these students. Max and Meckenzie will be our school captains and Ava and Rubi will be our vice captains for 2019. Over the next two weeks, the year six students will be invited to apply for our sports house captains. After this process is completed, we will order badges and have a special parade to present all our leaders with their badges later in the term.

Classes are well and truly into their daily routines and engaged in the curriculum. Please make sure you purchase the year level textbooks from the office to allow for class routines to run smoothly and enable your child to be engaged in relative work. Parades will be on a Friday morning at 8.30am. We will celebrate what has been happening in the school, remind students and parents what is coming up, and reward our students with certificates to celebrate their hard work through the week. This year each class will present a parade item on the last parade of the term. It will be an extravaganza of either poetry, song, dance, jokes or skits. This will be an opportunity for the students to engage with their

peers and teacher in a different manner, allowing the school community to be part of our great school.

It will be great to see some of the locals come in and help out with Tuckshop - it’s on Fridays and we’re looking at someone to come in from 9 - 11am or 11am - 1 pm. It is a great atmosphere and it’s even greater doing something for our next generation. Also, if any the local businesses would like to help with prepping lunch meals at an affordable price or even a donation, we use Tuckshop to help put money towards the P&C. HE 4-10 SWIMMING Carnival for students at Tin Can Bay P-10 State School was a fun action-packed day full of races. The crocodile race was a favourite for many students as they split into their two teams, Tun Can and Wallu, and completed laps of the Tin Can Bay swimming pool for 10 minutes non-stop to get as many points as possible. Although Tun Can was the clear winner with 729 points while Wallu had 716 points, the Cross Country is just around the corner and Wallu will be fighting to prove their strength.

Coloured Sands Starting below the lookout, walk along the beach towards Double Island Point for a kilometre or so to these amazing Coloured sand cliffs, with the best colours around 9 to 10 kilometres along the beach (accessible with a 4wd or Surf and Sand Safari tour) 5486 3131. Carlo Sand Blow A bush walk up to Carlo Sand Blow is a must for every visitor. Drive to the reservoir at the top of Cooloola Drive. The Blow is an easy 600m walk from the car park or take the longer walk from the National Parks Office. Spectacular views of the Coloured Sands, Double Island Point and Tin Can Bay Inlet are the bonus for your efforts. When the thermals are right, you will often see Hang Gliders taking off and landing at this beautiful piece of Nature’s Sculpture. Lake Poona After morning tea or lunch in the picnic area you can venture on some wonderful walks to Lake Poona or through some spectacular Rainforest. Allow 40 minutes to reach Lake Poona. Lake Freshwater Only accessible by 4WD, Tour or Walking. Walking tracks starts at the Bymien picnic area. The round trip from Rainbow Beach will take a full day and requires fitness. Foreshore Tin Can Bay You can walk 4km from Crabs Creek to Norman Point, over picturesque bridges, signage of flora and fauna, through mangroves, playgrounds and outdoor gyms. It is mostly flat – very safe for children on wheels. Start at the playground opposite the library, cycle to Crabs Creek and stop for a coffee, then return to opposite the library. Enjoy the views out to the inlet while the kids enjoy the playground and skatepark. Rainbow Beach 10,000 steps walk – from the headland behind the Surf Tower and Playground to Carlo Road. Paths are perfect for bicycles, scooters and skateboards.

On a positive, the fish have been on the chew with pretty much every species that Rainbow Beach has to offer filling the eski. Pearl perch, red emperor, sweetlip, parrot, wrasse, cod, cobia, mackerel and some great snapper are still roaming around.

ELL, IT’S BEEN a shocker this last month with wind and consistent bad weather, which has really limited our opportunities to get out.

Up the straits has seen plenty of good muddies on the move especially around the bigger tides. Let’s hope this weather starts to settle soon and we get some good weeks in.

Stronger than usual currents and a rather large shark problem didn’t help matters either, we managed good fish but a lot of heads in between them, ten to fifteen minutes on a spot and half a dozen

What’s biting for the Tin Can Bay Fishing Club

VER THE LAST couple of months the fishing has been generally good with excellent catches of mangrove jack from most of our creek systems. Jacks are thought to be mainly a night time capture on live bait, but there have been numerous fish caught lately during daylight hours and on various flesh baits and quite a few on yabbies. A few grunter have been caught while targeting Jacks. The only downside to Jack

fishing is where they are caught the sand flies are also present in huge numbers. There were good numbers of a variety of species submitted for the monthly comp which ran over December / January. There was a 36cm whiting caught early in December and a 5cm Mangrove Jack only to be beaten by a 41cm whiting. Then there was a 56cm Mangrove Jack which is a cracker fish, but on calculating the points the mega whiting at 41cm, caught by new

member Tony Punch, won the December/ January comp. There have been some quality fish already submitted for the February comp. There have been some good recent inside catches of reef species such as cod, sweetlip and slatey bream by those who work the tides and put in a bit of effort. The tax man has been present lately with occasional quality fish such as cod and sweetlip being bitten in half on the

way up. The sharks appear to be of the misconception that slatey bream is not a good eating fish. There has been a few quality summer whiting caught lately but generally whiting, bream and flathead have been fairly elusive. A few squid have also appeared and are hungry. Mud crabs have been around in good numbers for the last couple of months with some of excellent quality.

HE VICE PRESIDENT of the Tin Can Bay Fishing Club, Ron Cox, and club members extended a very big welcome to Mayor Mick Curran and Cr Mark McDonald to the Tin Can Bay Club house. The Club Vice President, Ron Cox, thanked Mayor Curran and the Gympie Regional Council for the ongoing support and funding that has been provided to our club by the Facilities Grant programme. Club members also thanked the Mayor and conveyed their appreciation for having received a funding grant of $2,500 from the Gympie Regional Council that was used to provide a concrete driveway and off-road parking for persons with a disability. The new apron and driveway will also facilitate wheelchair access to the club building. Ron Cox also mentioned that, “the club members are very actively engaged in supporting our community and other

community organisations”. The Executive Committee will be coordinating the Clean Up Australia Day Event in Tin Can Bay in March and will be also holding two Kids Junior Fishing training days which have been sponsored by Sunfish Queensland and the Gympie Regional Council. “Holding these community events is only made possible by the assistance that we receive from our valued sponsors and once again we thank the Gympie Council for their ongoing support,” said Ron Cox. Mayor Mick Curran thanked the members for inviting both Mark McDonald and himself to the morning’s event. He mentioned that the club was very proactive in supporting a number of local volunteer groups and was held in high regard by the community. He further stated that giving to and assisting other community groups is really

essential in small communities and the Tin Can Bay Fishing Club excelled in this regard. All present enjoyed a wonderful morning tea provided by the club’s ladies. Next General Meeting will be held at 4pm on Wednesday April 17 at our Club House, 33 Dolphin Ave, Tin Can Bay.

HE RAINBOW BEACH Cricket club have officially finished the regular season of the Gympie Reserve Grade competition. Rainbow Beach have finished in a solid

Rainbow Beach led the 15 round competition for 13 rounds, before a loss to Wests in round 14 meant that Rainbow Beach would have to settle as regular season runner ups. Round 14 was the biggest game of the season for both clubs and the Rainbow boys travelled into Gympie to meet the boys in green. Rainbow’s captain, Merv O’Neill, won the toss and decided to bat first. Rainbow Beach struggled early losing four wickets for hardly any runs before Deano Long came to the crease and made 35 off 29 delivers. However, terrific bowling from Wests player Sarge Malek (6-26), sealed Rainbow’s fate as they were ultimately bowled out 115. Wests then chased this total down winning by eight wickets. Regattas begin for the Dragon Boat Club

AST MONTH, the Cooloola Dragon Boat Club competed in their first regatta for the year. This regatta was held at Lake Kawana by the Brisbane River Dragon Boat Club with approx 20 teams competing. Cooloola Dragon team was joined by four members of the Hervey Bay Dragon Boat team to race as team Cooloola. While we didn’t come home with any trophies, it was a great day of racing,

with good race times and a day of fun and fellowship with members of all the participating teams. In the Gympie Show Pavilion on March 16, the Cooloola Dragon Boat Club will be manning a stall at the ‘Connecting the Community’ event to be held there. F YOU ARE looking for something to do on a Friday afternoon then bring the family down to the Tin Can Bay foreshore for a social game of Touch Football. “Our aim is to get the kids out, exercising and having fun, but we don’t mind if the parents safely jump in the mix,” explained President Jess Milne. All are welcome to participate in a stress-free, non competitive game. There

will be water refreshments available to quench your thirst. Kick off will be at 4pm for an hour or two, so if the kids need to blow off some steam after a long week at school bring ‘em over for some down-to-earth community fun. Athletics star destined for State Championships A

FTER A POSTPONED SunCoast Regional competition due to wet track and change of venue, the Cooloola Coast Little Athletics Centre came away victorious! All athletes that travelled to Noosa to compete at the Garriween Sports Centre gave it their all and many placed high on the tally board. U7 Gemma Campbell aced her 70m and 100m heats, U12 Logan Smith just missed a place in the shot put, but the stand out was U12 Anjelica Geurts who took home Bronze in the 100m and Silver in the long jump. Coach Bill had his work cut out, mentoring Anjie from fifth place in her 100m heats to third in the final. Anjie now has a place in the State Championships to be held in Townsville on March 23 and 24. Well done everyone and keep training! The 2018-19 season is almost over with medal presentation and break up on Saturday March 30. Athletes are in the running for the Superstar Standout Awards and the Athlete of the Year Award.

Nippers is abuzz JAC Co-ordinator, Helen Brown

OW GREAT WAS it to see most of our Nippers back last Sunday after the Christmas break. The beach was abuzz with activity and happy pink rashie Nippers. A big thank you to the U14s who helped out with water safety. I am hoping that we can get some more help from the Active members in the future. Also a big thank you to Justin for running the tube rescue sessions. This is a requirement for their certificates, it was greatly appreciated and enjoyed by all participants. Our final age championship day is on March 10, so hopefully we will have large attendance numbers. Unfortunately the weather hasn’t been kind to the Nipper program this season so here’s hoping we can have a good competition day. We will need help with setting up the beach, recorders for each group and packing up. Please report to the sign-in desk if you are able to help out. The end of the season is approaching and I hope to organise a team competition day, plus beach sprint and relay coaching! Our trophy day and break up on March 31 are also in process. Once again we are asking for sponsors for the trophies and age manager gifts. Last, but not least, thank you to those parents who helped out last month (some who were out

of their comfort zone) while I was caught up with Aleeshia from Sunshine Coast Branch conducting our yearly audit. Thanks to everyone for allowing our audit to go well. A Little Humour DNA TEST After 10 years, the wife starts to think their kid looks kinda strange so she decides to do a DNA test. She finds out that the kid is actually from completely different parents: Wife: Honey, I have something very serious to tell you Husband: What’s up? When we were leaving the hospital, you noticed that our baby had pooped, then you said: “Please go change the baby, I’ll wait for you here. “ So I went inside, got a clean one and left the dirty one there.” Moral: Never give a man a job for which he is not qualified.
