March is all about International Women’s Day. Seriously, we have so many kickass women in this town, we should be celebrating every single day of the year!

Some truly awful news to report, with the passing of Stuart Fergie AKA DidgeriSTU at the end of February.

The fundraising music festival set to be held in his honour was of course postponed, but will now be combined with the Rainbow Beach Spring Fest and turned into a celebration of his life and love of music. Turn to page 9 to find out all about the plan to mark “StuTember”.

We have a couple of local institutions celebrating milestone anniversaries this month - the beloved Rainbow Beach Community Centre Hall had its opening ceremony ten years ago, and the popular Dragon’s Lair Cafe at Tin Can Bay Markets also kicked off ten years ago! Time really does fly. Read about both in this issue.

Happy 10th birthday to them both, and looking forward to celebrating many more.

RIDAY 24 FEBRUARY 2012 at 11am marked the official opening of the Rainbow Beach Community Hall and Library.

For the past 10 years the Community Information Resource Services Incorporated Associated has been the manager of the building with the exclusion of the Library.

The Association is older though, as it was formed in late 1999.

During these past years the volunteers have been adapting to the new role of being the Rainbow Beach Community Centre which has become the trading name of the not-for-profit Association.

We have embraced a new way to operate through the office, yes with some bumps but always very resilient.

The main office gives internet access, cheap second hand books, fax, information and resources, and manages the bookings for the hire of three spaces (Conference Room, Back Office, Hall).

As you can imagine behind the scenes there is a lot of cleaning, property maintenance, restocking of office, kitchen, stage equipment.

Remotely the Management Committee carries on several projects that aim to strengthen the Community cohesion,

Resilience, Cultural Belonging, Arts and Music expression.

We have reconfirmed the yearly recurrent events such as the Rainbow Beach Spring Fest in September, Festival of Small Halls (usually November), Santa Comes to Rainbow in December, the monthly Markets every second Saturday with live music, and the popular Community Catch Up on the 4th Friday of each month.

We have embraced the responsibility of being also one of the Evacuation Centres of the area, we started the training process last October and we work closely with Council and the Cooloola Coast Local Disaster Management SubGroup.

I don’t know about you, but I am very proud of what we have achieved together and I look forward to the harvest yet to come from all the seeds we have been planting.

The biggest thank you goes to the amazing locals that pushed and fought for decades to have a Community Hall in our town.

If you feel like supporting your Community Association, Membership is only $5 a year.

Stay safe, hopefully I will see you there very soon.

T’S THE YEAR 2022, so it seems auspicious that Kate Clapson has worked for HQPlantations (HQP), one of Australia’s largest plantation forest growers, and its predecessors for 22 years, having started as a graduate in biotechnology at 22 years old.

As HQP’s Tree Improvement and Seed Production Coordinator, it’s possible Kate has the longest job title in the company and a complex and important role.

Kate leads the implementation of HQP’s seed production program in its genetically-improved seed orchards and the long term tree improvement program that provides the foundation for the highest quality Southern Pine and Araucaria plantations.

Kate’s work supported the development and use of a DNA marker chip for tropical pines, which could in future help identify genetically outstanding trees at the seedling stage rather than waiting for field trial measurements. This

has the potential to boost the rate of genetic progress in Southern Pine by as much as 50%.

“We’re not modifying the DNA, just deploying DNA technology in a highly advanced form of selective breeding through cross pollination,” said Kate.

“Not only do we care about growing really strong trees, we care about making sure it’s a renewable, sustainable, carbon sequestering resource for the future of QLD.” A local resident herself, Kate encourages young women in the Cooloola Coast and Fraser Coast areas to consider a career in science and particularly forest management.

“I’ve been offered a lot of opportunities throughout my career and the most rewarding part about working in forest management been seeing the results of my work realised quickly in an operational setting,” she said.

NTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY (IWD), held on Tuesday 8 March, is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating women’s equality.

IWD has occurred for well over a century, with the first IWD gathering in 1911 supported by over a million people.

Today, IWD belongs to all groups collectively everywhere.

IWD is not country, group or organisation specific.

International Women’s Day is powered by the collective efforts of all, regardless of gender.

Collective action and shared ownership for driving gender parity is what makes International Women’s Day impactful.

International Women’s Day Twilight Walk Maggie Travers

AST YEAR’S “Choose to Challenge” Twilight Walk was so much fun, enjoyed by about eighty people, that we are doing it all over again.

Women and men, girls and boys are invited to join members of the Heart Foundation walking groups, One Step at a Time Tin Can Bay, and Cooloola Cove Wheelie Walkers, at the Rotunda, Norman Point by 6pm for our Twilight Walk, along the foreshore to Lion’s Park, near the Library, on Tuesday 8 March, which is International Women’s Day. Participants will carry a glow stick (available that evening).

To cater for different abilities, there are four starting points.

Expect the first group to walk about 2km setting off at sunset, 6.11pm from Norman Point, meeting the next group halfway along the route on the foreshore opposite the Snack Shack, ready to depart by 6.25pm.

Third starting point is at the seat on the headland overlooking the Bay, five minutes later.

Final starting point is the exercise area on the flat, 6.35pm, maybe taking about ten minutes to reach the undercover area in Lion’s Park beside the Library.

Last year we were spoilt by the TCB Country Women’s Association, who provided a cuppa, cold drink, watermelon, sliced oranges, and a birthday cake for two of their members. President Wendy says, “QCWA members are more than happy to provide refreshments again this year. It was a great event last year, so I encourage you to come along and join the fun.”

We need to be aware of, and abide by the Covid restrictions current on 8 March.

Defence Exercise coming to the Coast T

HE COOLOOLA COAST will be getting a few extra visitors at the end of March with Defence Force personnel from Gallipoli Barracks converging on townships to conduct Exercise Ram Horn.

Between 400-500 soldiers from the 8th/9th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment will be in action around Tin Can Bay and Cooloola Cove from 24 March to 6 April.

Exercise Ram Horn is designed to train the soldiers in non-combatant evacuation operations and activities are expected be conducted in and around Norman Point, Crab Creek, Chooky Mallet Park, and Cooloola Airfield, which include night operations at selected locations.

There will be further information available closer to the training date so keep an eye out in local media and for signs/flyers.

HE BREASTSCREEN mobile service is back at Lions Park Tin Can Bay from 21 March to 8 April 2022, and local women 40 years and over are encouraged to book a potentially life-saving breast screen.

It is exactly two years since COVID caused the first disruptions to all our lives, including the mobile breast screening service to Tin Can Bay being delayed until May in 2020.

Medical Director of BreastScreen Queensland Sunshine Coast, Dr Alison Roper, wants to reassure those women who had a breast screen in May or June 2020 that they will be invited to have their two-yearly breast screen when the bus arrives in Tin Can Bay at the end of March.

Dr Roper said: “While the recommended time between breast screens is two years, there is no problem in coming one or two months early. It is important not to delay having a breast screen, as early detection increases treatment options and saves lives.”

Breast cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed in women, with one in seven Queensland women diagnosed in their lifetime. A breast screen can detect cancer early, before a woman or her doctor can feel anything, and regular breast screening is the most effective way to reduce deaths from breast cancer.

Women aged 50-74 years are particularly encouraged to have a free breast screen

every two years.

Women aged 40-49 and those over 75 can also attend this free service.

“Making a potentially life-saving breast screening appointment is simple, just pick up the phone and call 13 20 50 or book online at breastscreen.qld.gov.au,” Dr Roper said.

“Our female staff are very experienced and understand the needs, fears and concerns of other women.”

Women who are unable to attend the mobile van can book an appointment at the BreastScreen service located at Goldfields Plaza in Gympie. This service operates Mondays, Tuesdays and one Saturday each month.

Council’s 2022-2027 Corporate Plan in the spotlight C

OUNCIL IS INVITING the community to have a say on its vision for the next five years as part of the development of its 2022-2027 Corporate Plan.

Over the last few months, Gympie region councillors have been reflecting on and discussing their vision for the region in areas such as community development, infrastructure, growth and the environment as part of the new plan’s development.

Mayor Glen Hartwig said that the group has come up with what it thinks is a good foundation for building the region’s future, and is now ready to check-in with the community.

“Council’s Corporate Plan sets a clear direction for council’s CEO in providing for, servicing and developing the region,” he said.

“This means that the content of our Corporate Plan very much impacts the projects being delivered by council and the day-to-day work of its various teams,” said Mayor Hartwig.

“We have a very active and involved community and we want to make sure that everyone’s voices are heard so that we can direct council’s resources accordingly.”

Drop in sessions are being held across the region.

“The intention of the sessions is for the community to reflect and provide feedback on the vision that has been developed by Council,” said Mayor Hartwig.

HE LAST week of February we had four of our Nippers travel down to Alexandra Headland to compete in the 2022 QLD Youth Championships: Beanna Hoult, Bryce Hoult, Oliver Pratt and Sienna Arthur.

Each will be competing in their selected events which include Beach Sprints, Flags, Boards and Surf Race.

Sienna will be heading down to defend her 2021 gold medal in Flags, let’s hope she will be able to do it again!

The kids have been training hard at Nippers each Sunday as well as some external beach sprint and flag training from Dave Arthur and we wish them all the best!

OME VERY SAD news for the music community, with the legendary Stuart Fergie, aka DidgeriSTU, having left the stage and his earthly body.

A fundraiser had been planned in Rainbow Beach for the last weekend in February to assist him and his family through his illness, but that was understandably cancelled.

However, event organiser Elisa Seul made the following announcement: “Dear Friends & Music Lovers, As announced in the video (on the Rainbow Beach Spring Fest Facebook page), we have made the decision to postpone the FundRaiser Event of the 26th February to respectfully allow Stu’s close family to mourn.

We want to make sure that the OKA boys legacy is kept alive, which is why we are shifting the event into StuTember where we invite you all to come to Rainbow Beach on the first weekend of StuTember and collectively celebrate Stuart Boga Fergie’s Life & Work, as his Music Family.

The floods that are currently surrounding Rainbow Beach and hit the Sunny Coast are probably a metaphor of all the tears that have been shed, in facing this massive loss in the Community.

During the next 6 months we will be dedicated to organising a Life Celebration and it will give us all time to bring the good positive vibes as Stu deserves.

YMPIE POLICE are reminding residents in Rainbow Beach, Tin Can Bay, Imbil, Goomeri, Widgee and Kilkivan to review their home and business security measures, to lock and secure vehicles and keep valuables out of sight.

Recently in the above-mentioned areas, property related offences have been reported to police. Details can be found at myPolice Gympie.

On 6 February, two reported “stealing from motor vehicle” offences occurred at a premise on Tin Can Bay Road, Tin Can Bay. The two reports relate to the theft of number plates from vehicles. One of the vehicles bearing Queensland registration TRI770 had both number plates stolen and the other vehicle bearing Queensland registration 268YUH had the rear plate stolen.

Investigations are continuing.

Coolabay Choir back in the rhythm

Quiet but productive month for QCWA Wendy Ritchie

ELL LIKE ALL our members and our community it was a very quiet month, unable to have any craft mornings or hoy.

However, it was very productive to stay at home with members making Trauma Teddies, owls, squares for rugs, and even beanies have started to appear for winter.

We are now making poppies for Anzac Day - so far we have over 150 to be distributed.

2022 is QCWA’s 100th year, with 11 August being QCWA’s birthday and we have started planning a community party.

A challenge for QCWA Queensland was to cover the MCG with 10-inch knitted squares which will then be made into

blankets. Members and friends have made 200 so far, great knitting thank you.

Good news, we will be opening up in March to members and the community, we all need our regular events and meetings, but of course we still must follow government guidelines.

Cooloola Coast Probus Club keeps busy Katrina van den Brenk

OOLOOLA COAST PROBUS activities will resume this month after some cancellations due to Covid, but members have kept in touch informally.

14 March will see a new committee elected at our AGM to take the reins, and it is usual for a Probus Club president to change each year. This will be preceded by a normal monthly meeting and afternoon tea.

Our Tour Director is always interested in any suggestions from members as to where they want to go and bus trips to more distant locations may be taken as well as car-sharing to places of interest in the

nearby areas of Gympie, Maryborough, and thereabouts.

On the third Monday of each month we gather for a morning tea at some local establishment.

In April we’ll join with other Probus Clubs from the Bundaberg, Hervey Bay, and Gympie areas for an Ecumenical Service in Gympie and lunch together afterwards.

Probus Queensland has organised a 14 day tour in May: “Autumn Colours of Tasmania”.

Meetings are held on each second Monday of the month at 2.00pm at the Sandcastle Motel in Tin Can Bay and include a break for afternoon tea and a chat.

HE TIN CAN BAY Quilters Club returned for this year at the start of February.

A list of monthly projects will be available and sent out to the members in due course. The first project will be a Charity Quilt which when finished will be raffled with all monies raised going to a local charity, yet to be determined.

Many members were busy during the holidays, with Irene Horley, Leonie Meggitt and Jo Page making lunch box bags and Lynda Kozacynski made her first quilt using a jelly roll. Well done Lynda.

S MENTIONED IN my last report I have been away from Rainbow, but carrying on raising funds for those in need of support.

After the recent floods around Tansey, Goomeri, Maryborough areas we offered support to many organisations but due to application processing for grants we only heard back from anyone in mid-February.

Our offer will be taken up by Blaze-Aid - an organisation of volunteers mainly helping with fencing. We have previously helped them after the fires two years ago in northeast Victoria.

This month we have also helped Fencing For Fires in Victoria ($1500) and the Gympie

Homeless ($600). Many thanks to all who have donated with special mentions to Tin Can Bay Bakery, Jim Snee, and Wayne Kerle.

Bay Auto continues to help Wayne with his bottle collections and a big thanks to Breeze Holiday Park, Tin Can Bay Holiday Park, Tin Can Bay Yacht Club, Kingfisher, and all that have left bottles and cans at 10 Tingira Close, Rainbow Beach.

Drop-in Sausage Sizzle supports Tin Can Bay community Ross Carruthers

S I ENTER the Tin Can Bay RSL, adjusting my mask, the smell of BBQ sausages and fried onions greets me like a long lost friend and any mask-related inconvenience is forgotten.

Terry Giles, affectionately known as Tezza, is the RSL’s laconic social coordinator.

He is also chief cook and bottle washer for the sausage sizzle.

Don’t worry, wife Rowena and the rest of the family are on hand to help out. Tezza is a long-term resident of Tin Can Bay who spent much of his working life with the Railway, firstly in Bankstown in Sydney and then in Ipswich.

Rowena sidles up to Tezza: “Six for the gang on the balcony please.” “No worries”, he responds with a cheeky grin and settles back in behind the BBQ. “We kicked off these sausage sizzles a few

years ago to provide a venue for veterans to get information about support programs.

They were successful then so we decided to start them up again last year. We are going through two to three dozen sausages every Drop-in Friday and the demand is growing.”

I look around. Allan and Neil are sitting across from me having a chat about their work experiences around Australia. Adelaide and the girls are at their regular table in the corner talking up a storm. Gail works in the bar on Tuesdays and Thursdays and has dropped in for something to eat and a chat.

Everyone is looking relaxed and is enjoying themselves. What a great idea Terry. Thank you for your service!

The RSL’s free Drop-in Sausage Sizzle is held on the first Friday of every month. The next sausage sizzle is on at the Tin Can Bay RSL on 4 March from 11.30am to 1.30pm. All the community is welcome to attend.

DCARE’S CYBER Resilience Outreach Clinic (CROC) team recently connected with locals on a visit to the area.

IDCARE is Australia and New Zealand’s national identity and cyber support service. They are a notfor-profit organisation that was formed to address a critical support gap for individuals confronting identity and cyber security concerns.

The CROC program consists of mobile pop-up clinics across regional Australia to provide personal direct priority access to IDCARE services.

In mid-February they popped into Tin Can Bay, and had this to say: “Thanks to local councillor, Jess Milne, for making time to meet with us and the Solo Seniors group for allowing us to share important information about scams impacting your community during your morning tea!”

If you missed them, they have left some information at the Tin Can Bay library.

Their next stop was the Rainbow Beach markets, where they set up their truck and their popular “Scream at a Scammer” booth and then also spent a few days in the area.

“We loved meeting with locals, tourists and stallholders and hearing their stories!” the CROC team said.

“We chatted to many stallholders who benefitted

from learning how to keep their small business safe - and we may have ended up buying a few too many souvenirs too.”

They were also pleased to be able to catch up with a couple of locals who were previous clients of their services.

ORE THAN A million Australians will experience a scam, cybercrime or identity theft event each year. When it happens, it’s very common for people to feel embarrassed, ashamed, or foolish and not want to talk about it.

IDCARE is a not-for-profit charity that was formed to address a critical support gap for individuals confronting identity and cyber security concerns.

They provide free base assistance for individuals that have fallen victim to identity theft, hacking, phishing, telephone scams, romance scams, investment scams, data breaches, ransomware, and lost or stolen credentials.

There are ways that you can protect yourself, family, and friends from risk including: • Run antivirus and update apps and operating systems.

• Never provide remote access to someone who calls “out of the blue”.

• Mix your passwords, did you know it might only take 0.29 seconds to hack a 7 digit passwords but ten years to hack a 10 digit password?

• Review your online accounts and multi-factor

• •

• •

authenticate everything. Even if your username and password are hacked, criminals won’t have access to your unique code.

Check your online account settings including recovery phone number and email address.

Don’t take the bait, never respond to emails, phone calls, or text messages that ask for personal, account or credential information.

Stop and seek support, take time to respond and do your research.

Start the conversation at home because you are not alone.

If you suspect something is not right then act immediately. Focus on what you think is exposed, what information do you think the criminals got?

Call your bank without delay, most criminals are after your money.

Report your experience if it’s online to ww.cyber. gov.au or if it involves physical crime then to the Police. Exposed accounts and credentials should be reported to the issuers of these services.

To regain control of your devices and online accounts: • Disconnect your device from the internet if you think you are at risk.

• Some devices may need to be reset to a time before the compromise.

• Jump on another device and change your online passwords.

Leaden Flycatcher Melissa Marie

W

HEN YOU CATCH the sun shining off a leaden flycatcher’s feathers you really will see a jewel of the bush.

The male’s luminous, shimmering blue head, bib, and back create a gorgeous contrast to his white belly, whilst the female displays a rufous throat and breast, and white belly.

A highly migratory bird, keep an eye out for it in eucalypt forest, rainforest, mangroves, and coastal scrub.

Some leaden flycatchers vacate our neck of the words and head out over the Torres Strait to winter in southern New Guinea.

As can be gathered from their name,

a leaden flycatcher dines on insects it catches while darting from branch to branch, catching its meals in flight in a display of acrobatic prowess.

When it comes time to raise young, the pair will make a nest resembling a deep cup made of strips of bark and grass, woven together with spider webs and lichen, and take turns to incubate.

Unfortunately less than a quarter of all eggs will make it to become a fledgling chick.

The movements of leaden flycatchers are still poorly understood, so if you do spot one please don’t hesitate to become a citizen scientist and record your sighting in the global birding app, eBird.

eBird is a global online database of bird observations providing scientists, researchers and amateur naturalists with real-time data about bird distribution and abundance. eBird Australia is a collaborative project managed by the Centre for Biodiversity and Conservation Science.

Your sightings contribute to hundreds of conservation decisions and peerreviewed papers, thousands of student projects, and help inform bird research worldwide.

UIETER TIMES at the Dolphin Centre now that school has gone back, however we do see quite a few children on the weekend.

It is with regret that I have tended my resignation at the Dolphin Centre as I am moving to Toowoomba. I have a lot of family and friends in Toowoomba so will not be lonely. After being in Tin Can Bay for over 18 years I have made a lot of friends who I will miss but on the bright side, I will be free to come over to Tin Can Bay at any time.

I will miss the dolphins as they have been a big part of my life here in Tin Can Bay. I am sure I will get updates from time to time from our very valuable and knowledgeable volunteers.

Exciting news on the morning of 15 February - Aussie brought in her new calf!

It must have been born overnight on the 14th (St Valentine’s day).

Both mum and baby are in good health.

We all hope that this new calf survives as it is a real stunner and will draw the crowds.

Everyone loves a baby.

Remember if you are a local, you do not pay admission to the centre, only paying for feeding if you wish to participate.

Please indicate to the gate person that you are local and can produce some form of identification.

Due to Government Covid regulations on tourist venues, only the double vaccinated public can enter the Dolphin Feeding area, however you can enter the cafe and order coffee and takeaway food.

Middle Rock

Swim in the flags in front of the Surf Lifesaving tower. Walk via the steps or walkway near the lookout and surf club, or drive onto Griffin Esplanade. 4WD beach access begins here.

When tides and conditions allow, the walk to Middle Rock and back is a beautiful way to check out the Coloured Sands. From here, vehicle permits are required and dogs are prohibited.

Coloured Sands Visit the patrolled beach, near the surf tower or the lookout to see the 70 plus colours in our cliffs. From town, walk south 1km along the beach - for best colours 4WD or tour a further 9km.

Remember it is a gazetted road.

Inskip Point This peninsula is the gateway to Fraser Island, a favourite fishing spot and pet friendly camping grounds for generations.

Only 15 minutes drive (2WD) from Rainbow Beach.

Carlo Sand Blow

Freshwater Picnic Area

Park at the top of Cooloola Drive, and walk 600m up from the car park or bushwalk about 2km from the National Parks Office for spectacular views of the Coloured Sands, Double Island Point, Tin Can Bay Inlet and hang gliders.

Walk to and swim in nearby Freshwater Lake, picnic or BBQ at the beautiful shady day-use area, found before Freshwater Road reaches Teewah Beach. 4WD only.

Poona Lake

Walk 4km from Crab Creek to Norman Point, over picturesque bridges, signage of flora and fauna, through mangroves, playgrounds and outdoor gyms. It is mostly flat and very safe for children on wheels. Look out for 137 species of birds.

Drive to Bymien Picnic Area (2WD) via 3km gravel on the Freshwater Road, (off Rainbow Beach Road). It’s a 40 minute walk to reach the cool waters of Lake Poona through beautiful rainforest and carrol (grey myrtle) scrub.

Searys Creek Only 7km from town towards Gympie, with 2 waterholes, boardwalks, bridges and history – do read the sign and spot the creatures. Always cool on the hottest of days.

Rainbow Beach Headland A look out, a viewing platform, 2 playgrounds, a skatepark, BBQs and picnic facilities. See the whales from here in season and watch the surfers out the front. Take a photo at the Cherry Venture propeller.

Double Island Point Access via the 4WD only Great Beach Drive or Freshwater Track. See dolphins, whales (seasonal), manta rays, turtles and walk up to our historic lighthouse. It has the longest break in Australia -when the swell lines up.

Mudlo Rocks

Wander here at low tide, play in rock pools and watch 4WDs navigate any exposed rocks. ALWAYS check conditions and ask locals before you 4WD - it is not always safe, even close to low tide.

Tin Can Bay Foreshore

Tin Can Bay Wildflower Walk Known for spectacular wildflower species, access this trail from the corner of Emperor St and Oyster Parade. Best in late winter and early spring.

Boat Ramps You can launch your boat at Norman Point and Crab Creek in Tin Can Bay or Carlo Point and Bullock Point near Rainbow Beach. All except Bullock Point offer toilet and scenic picnic facilities.

Feed Wild Dolphins at Norman Point Arrive from 7am, after feeding (fees apply), the dolphins leave for another day. A picturesque peninsula with public pool, playground, sailing, boat ramp and pontoon and picnic facilities.

Carlo Point For spectacular sunsets over the water, take a cheese platter or fish and chips and watch the day’s end. This favourite fishing spot is only 3 km from Rainbow Beach.

UBLIC AWARENESS is growing upon State Government plans to allow private development inside Cooloola National Park.

The Brisbane Times published three articles on the impacts facing Poona Lake in mid-February.

Links to these articles are listed at: https://www.protectparks.net/medialinks Since then, Protect Our Parks started a Facebook group to better connect people to this issue. This site gained 260 subscribers within 24 hours and subscription numbers are continuing to rise. The group can be seen and supported at: https://www.facebook.com/ groups/628388164907569 or search “Protect Our Parks” on Facebook.

Protect Our Parks started a new petition opposing the park development plan after the first petition to Queensland Parliament ended on 11 February. Please see and support it at: https://www. change.org/ProtectOurNationalParks After a steady start, signatures on this new petition are now rapidly increasing as

people become aware of it.

Please understand that we are not alone or unreasonable in opposing this development plan. A new nation-wide poll finds that: 1.

91% agree national parks and conservation areas are critical to protect nature from resource extraction (including logging and mining

2.

78% say they do not support any development in parks and protected areas at all

3.

There is support for small scale projects that help people enjoy nature such as public toilets, visitor centres, and interpretation areas.

Who then are our governments listening to when they make these private development plans? Apparently not the Australian public!

HE DRAGON’S LAIR CAFE at Tin Can Bay markets started at Easter 2012. Wow, 10 years ago!

The opportunity arose following the retirement of the previous caterer who worked from the RSL Hall kitchen. RSL Management wanted the food service to continue at Tin Can Bay markets so Cooloola Dragon Boat Club was approached to fill the gap, especially as it was known that a number of members had food catering experience.

With about 4 weeks notice, Andrea Casey (then CDBC President) called for interest from Club members. Norma Sanderson offered her service as cook and got busy organising the kitchen. She also proposed the name Dragon’s Lair which we readily adopted. Jan Low and Andrea Casey agreed to help set up and get the cafe running, along with Chris Rogers (who sadly passed away last year).

Dragon’s Lair Cafe is a major fundraiser for Cooloola Dragon Boat Club. With the help of fantastic members who volunteer their time each month on Tin Can Bay market day, the Club has greatly benefited from the funds raised through the Dragon’s Lair Cafe.

The Cafe offers breakfasts and morning teas (dine - in and takeaway) to Tin Can Bay market visitors and stall holders. In 2015 DLC started an “order and deliver” service to stall holders, who often cannot leave their stalls. They were amazed and said “it is the only market that provides this wonderful service”.

Big things are being planned to celebrate CDBC Dragons Lair Cafe 10 year achievement.

Call in and see us on the 3rd Saturday each month at TCB markets and sample our food and drinks.

IT’S GREAT 24 – Rainbow Beach Cooloola Coast Community News – March 2022

LAYING CONDITIONS were very difficult during the past month as a wet course made the scores very high.

We are forging ahead with Ladies, Mens, and Vets championships starting in March.

We have had several visitors from different states of Australia playing in our competitions since the borders have opened up and we are always pleased to see new faces on the course.

The Country Club has recently appointed a New Head Greenkeeper to the staff and he is busy implementing the improvements which have been planned for our course.

We have competition golf on all days except Monday. Bookings for the 18 hole competitions can be made through the Pro Shop by either calling in or ringing 0409 727 577.

The Thursday and Friday 9 hole competitions commence from 7 am onwards and not necessary.

Allbookings clothing,are Shoes & Accessories New residents to the area wishing to join our Golf Club can do all the (excluding Jewellery and Country piety goods) necessary paperwork at the Club front desk where our friendly office staff can assist.

Our Resident Professional James will take bookings from anyone wishing to learn how to play golf. He has a good variety of clothing and equipment for sale also.

Motorised hire buggies are able to be booked for anyone who would rather drive the course instead of walking.

Yacht Club looking forward to 2022 Cooloola Cup Regatta

HE TIN CAN BAY Yacht Club is hosting the 2022 Cooloola Cup Regatta on 23 and 24 April.

As last year, the Cup will be proudly sponsored by Century 21 and local businesses.

The inaugural Cooloola Cup was held between Christmas and New Year 1981 and was the first major event of the newly formed TCB Yacht Club. It consisted of 4 days of racing including a race to Mineral Sands Jetty, Fraser Island for an overnight stay and racing back the following day.

There were 15 yachts in the regatta with some famous ocean racers, Siska 11, Cadence, and Odyssey, a Hobart winner.

Over time, the format of the Cup has changed.

The regatta weekend now includes the Cockroach Cup and is open to “off the beach” monohull dinghies and multihulls, sports boats, trailer sailers, and keel boats.

Last year saw 27 entries with the popular Weta multihull forming half of these.

The Yacht Club is hoping for an even bigger and better fleet this year and of course, fair winds and weather.

Some good quality fish weighed in nannygai, cod, sweetlip, and mangrove jack. Before you ask - fresh live bait (mullet) was working well as were the better prawn style lures.

Members also report that Kauri Creek has been fishing well for whiting and flathead. Squid is still being caught, but it was hard with the freshwater following the rain - they should be back now that the water is clearing up.

HE CLUB HAD a break over the January holiday period and as of the time of writing this article (mid-February) we have only held one fishing event and no social events.

That doesn’t mean that we have nothing to talk about as our members didn’t stop fishing – check out the photos!

AN YOU “sea” grass? Coastcare would like to know where.

Cooloola Coastcare is seeking locals who get out on the water in Tin Can Inlet to help find existing seagrass beds.

If you have knowledge of or photos of seagrass at any depth including in the intertidal zone or in deep water, we’d love to hear from you. If you can give a good description of the area with landmarks, or even better still, a GPS location, that would be very useful.

We are seeking to identify seagrass locations after recent field observations using underwater cameras indicated the worrying absence of seagrass, the building block of the food web in our marine environment and vital food source for dugongs and turtles.

Please include the date of the sighting, your best description of the location to help our fieldworkers find it again, and a GPS location if you have it.

Any photos of the general location are helpful as well as underwater photos if you have them.

Coastcare will use your recon photos or descriptions to help narrow the search areas and will target these areas for further research.

Coastcare volunteers can then further investigate using both our underwater cameras on our seagrass sled and our new underwater drone, a remotely operated underwater vehicle funded by Gympie Regional Council Community Grant for the Environment.

This hunt for seagrass and continuing research into the state of seagrass and underwater biodiversity is part of an ongoing project to try to rehabilitate Tin Can Inlet that began in 2017.

The Tuckeroo T

HE TUCKEROO (Cupaniopsis anacardioides) or Cupan Tree is a beautifully shaped tree with a non-invasive root system which tolerates both wet and dry conditions, eventually reaching 10m.

This tree is suitable for and popular in coastal areas as it also tolerates salt spray. It has dark green foliage and, in autumn, insignificant white flowers followed by yellow/orange fruits which are edible.

It is a good shade tree commonly used in street planting throughout SE Queensland.

If you have some undamaged used pots at home we would appreciate them for use in the nursery as we recycle them. 140ml pots and grow tubes are most needed. If you could drop off any pots when you visit the nursery we would be most grateful.

AM PLEASED to report that the Rainbow Beach Community Pantry is continuing to meet a need with families and single people calling in on a regular basis to access frozen meals, refrigerated products and dry goods.

Generous locals continue to drop off supplies when a call out for items is shared on the Words Out Rainbow Beach Facebook page. Victory Care at Maryborough and Gympie and cafes in Rainbow Beach and Gympie regularly donate frozen meals which have been greatly appreciated.

If you would like to donate items, please contact Chappy Ronnie on 0413 135 867 or call in at the church in Carlo Road 1-3pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Woolies at Cooloola Cove donate frozen goods, refrigerated food, pantry items, snacks, and household supplies which are picked up on Thursday mornings that are then passed on to locals through the pantry. They are on a mission to reduce the amount of food that ends up in landfill to 0% by 2025 and we are helping with that!

The Rainbow Beach Learning Community has had a great start with children and teenagers enjoying art, craft, photography, sewing, computer skills, cooking, and outdoor activities such as yabby pumping and learning fishing skills.

We have some amazingly skilled people living amongst us who are happy to share their knowledge and experience. Mo Riggs from Mocean Art is teaching the older children grass root skills such as making paint and crayons from natural products that will be used to create beautiful art works.

The younger children have created “ouchy pouchies” and cup warmers using basic sewing skills taught by Bec. Jess McKenzie, Rainbow Beach’s own wedding photographer, is passing on her knowledge to help our budding photographers.

Mike is enthralling his group with the basics of how computers work. Tina, Chrissy, Kerry, and Martine are using their skill in the kitchen to help the children create fantastic food which is then shared for lunch.

Joe and Jess have fishing in their blood and are passing on their passion to the next generation teaching them how to find yabbies and cast a bait net. Soon they will actually do some fishing!

On Tuesday afternoons, Sarah Booth and Dean Marshall from Rainbow Beach Learn to Surf are providing their local knowledge and leadership with water and bush activities to give the children a safe, enjoyable outdoor afternoon.

We are looking for locals who have interesting skills or are passionate about what they do to come along on Thursday mornings to inspire our young people. Last week Jan Waters from Turtlecare shared about what is happening with turtles on our local beaches and the perilous life of a baby turtle.

If you would like to come along and share about what floats your boat, please contact Ronnie.

The 2022 Sandcastle Competition is happening again on Wednesday 13 April, on the beach near the SLS tower with registration from 8.30am. The competition starts at 9am with judging

by Sandshapers of Noosa at 11am and prize-giving at 11.30am.

Last year’s competition saw hundreds of locals and visitors on the beach creating amazing sand sculptures and winning great prizes donated by local businesses.

Cooloola Coast Realty and Rainbow Beach Realty have kindly sponsored Sandshapers of Noosa who will be back creating an amazing sand sculpture to inspire us.

Make sure that you save the date and start getting a team together to plan and build your sand creation.

During my time as chaplain at Tin Can Bay, Gympie South, and Rainbow Beach Schools, I have been given the opportunity to provide parenting articles for inclusion in each school’s fortnightly school newsletter.

Hello and welcome to another great edi on of the monthly rant. What another spectacular month it has been. Although the weather has thrown up a few interes ng events, but as I always say, “It doesn't rain in Rainbow.” Only Gympie floods.

And apparently poor old Maryborough. Not sure if I can remember the last floods so it must be climate change?

Anyway, is Covid finally star ng to be a thing of the past? It is almost becoming the new norm to get Covid. No toilet paper, a face diaper, and people pretending to sign in with the Covid app. Not sure how much contact tracing is occurring since the state government said they wouldn't be tracing anymore? Probably s ll the same amount of people employed. Taxes need to be spent somewhere, I mean saved*. It is me to get rid of the app.

Did someone say infla on? Nothing like the perfect storm.

Li le labour availability, impacted logis cs (interna onal & domes c), short supply of wood pallets, low interest rates the list goes on. Cost of living might seem to sneak up soon too? Watch this space.

Enough about first world problems - onto the SPORTS REPORT. At the me of wri ng last month's report, our li le Aussie ripper Ash Barty had made it into the Australian Open final but the result wasn't un l a day or two later…and as we all now know, SHE WON! Truly an Aussie spor ng icon now.

Domes c sport has all been pre y quiet but now we are ramping up to the start of the AFL/NRL seasons in March.

The rugby has already kicked off and the season started well for the Reds with a defini ve win against Melbourne Rebels.

Not much else to report sport-wise, except of course the spectacle that is the Superbowl. Not many people I know care less about the NFL but s ll tune in to the big game. This year it was Los Angeles Rams against

Cincinna Bengals, which means absolutely nothing to me but the game s ll finished up on a pre y exci ng note with the Rams scoring in the dying minutes to win. And of course all anyone talks about is the hal�ime show.

Oh, as you have probably no ced our store makeover is con nuing, with new floors and aisle signage on their way.
