FTER THE awesome events of Thirsty Merc and the Rodeo, the next few weeks are jam-packed with the Bay to Bay, Warbirds, Hot Rod and Rockabilly Rumble, BioBlitz, Mother’s Day Classic, GourMAY and IRB Ocean Roar.

You can learn Italian or have your say on the Rainbow Beach Sportsground, Cooloola Cove Skatepark and resilience of our coastline.

In this issue, meet a couple of local characters and hear their history, plus we introduce three newer residents.

We also announce Nipper Champs, and after 14 seasons of Sundays on the beach, we Gilmores are officially graduating from Rainbow Beach Nippers.

It is not just summer, from spring to Easter you’d find us rain, hail or shine on the beach. Mandatory sunshine and surf time, 8.30-10.30am.

It is not a sport you drop and go. Nippers relies on families to get involved. I’ve met wonderful parents, grandparents and carers from the coast, Gympie and surrounds by volunteering at Nippers.

Work as an Age Manager for Heatley was not always easy (!), but seeing almost a decade of Nippers progress through the age groups was rewarding.

It has been fun helping the club over the years (even Tracey’s BBQ tent!) and a big shout out to Karly, Kim and Kelly for continuing on with uniform duties!

Another congratulations to Helen Brown, our co-ordinator. Helen gives her all to our Nippers, I thank her and all the managers over the years.

Heatley worked Sundays when I started with our two eldest, I was also shepherding an excited two-year-old whilst simultaneously managing feed and nap time for our youngest.

But to watch the levels of confidence grow in each of our children - as ‘green caps’, conquering the ‘cans’, learning the boards, then progressing through to their surf rescue certificates and becoming lifesavers, is heartwarming. Yes, I am a proud mum.

I am so grateful to our Surf Club and members and all it has given back to us as a family. I would definitely recommend the experience to others. Give it a try!

This race has been held every year since its inception in 1981 and attracts more than 150 boats which is considerably larger than the size of the Sydney to Hobart fleet. Some 600 to 800 competitors are involved, who with their group support, total over 1000 visitors to our region for the weekend. It goes without saying that this event contributes considerably to our local business economy.

The event is run by The Hervey Bay Sailing Club with the support of kindred clubs, Tin Can Bay Yacht Club and Hervey Bay Boat Club Yacht Squadron, rescue organisations Coast Guard Tin Can Bay, Coast Guard Sandy Strait and Volunteer Marine Rescue Hervey Bay and other sponsors, boat owners, businesses and more organisations.

“There are more local guys involved - like Wayne from Rainbow Beach Fishing and Camping who is sponsoring a trophy. There are 16 categories as a direct result of locals getting involved.”

In fact, there will be eight Car Trophies and eight Motorcycle Trophies and prizes.

Pageant winners take home a weekend for two at Rainbow Beach, helicopter ride for two, cosmetics and giveaways.

“Suzie Dunstan (Miss Blondie Bubbles) will be hosting the daytime ‘Miss Rainbow Beach’ Pin Up Pageant, with a tropical theme.

“We’re putting together a local’s nighttime pageant for girls or guys - and there’ll be a few giveaways on the night for them!” said Nick.

It is Nick’s aim that all the businesses and charities in Rainbow will benefit: “We are raffling a Rainbow Beach helicopter ride.

The Rainbow Beach P&C sausage sizzle will raise funds for school. If there are any other

community-based local fundraising events, please give the club a call.”

So come see the classic and custom cars, hotrods and motorcycles from all over the world, live music and fashion, plus a jumping castle and kids’ activities, 11am till 4pm at the Centre Block.

Then party on from 5pm ‘til late at The Sports Club, with live rock ‘n’ roll, prizes and dancers - all for a fiver!

Spectator sport plus a BBQ and beach bar!

HIS YEAR, there are even more reasons to come down to the beach on June 1 and 2 to watch the high-octane event, inflatable rescue boat (IRB) competiton, Ocean Roar.

As competitors from Surf Life Saving Clubs around the state fight it out for a surf rescue supremacy, you can relax at a beach bar over brews and a menu from Beauty and Beard.

The action alone is worth making your way to the beach.

The races are all about simulating rescue situations and testing the abilities’ of drivers and crew people as they’re transferred to a competitive setting.

Aside from the spills and thrills of the competition, the event is a real reinforcement of lifesaving skills.

This is the third year Rainbow Beach Surf Lifesaving Club has hosted the event, and they’ve invited Gympie locals Jarrod Dan and Lauren Langley to cater.

They smoke locally sourced meats low and slow for 12 hours over Ironbark timbers and serve with fresh, seasonal and sumptuous sides.

Ocean Roar is the dedicated IRB competition series which features five rounds of competition throughout the season with each round attracting on average, 280 competitors. The competition works on a cumulative point-based system with the winning team awarded the Premiership Title at the end of the series.

The event is a popular precursor to the Queensland IRB Championships which sees over 300 competitors go head-tohead in the pinnacle event of the season.

So come down and experience Round 4 IRB Premiership Series - you may even see a Rainbow Beach team!

Warbirds at Tin Can Bay

HE ANNUAL Southern Cross Air Force Warbirds (SCAF) will be held at Tin Can Bay next weekend, May 4 and 5.

The Warbirds Association in Australia “comes of age” this year, it being 21 years since its inception in 1998, in Bundaberg, by the late Rick Rogers. At that time it was a subsidiary of the USA-based World Miniature Warbirds Association (WMWA). This association still exists today.

The annual Tin Can Bay event is the major meeting on the Warbirds calendar, and usually has over 100 model aeroplanes present, from as far north as Bundaberg, west to Toowoomba, and south to the Gold Coast.

Most of the participants will camp at the field and some are already there to get the best spots. The club has great facilities, with hot showers, 240-volt power, flushing toilets and a full canteen operating over the two days.

The field looks a picture at present and the public will enjoy the park-like atmosphere with plenty of parking and shaded benches. Fare will include hamburgers, hot dogs, hot chips etc, and hot and cold drinks.

OOLOOLA BIOBLITZ is to be held in Rainbow Beach and you’re invited!

Mark your calendars now for the weekend of May 17-19, for the Cooloola BioBlitz based in Rainbow Beach and the surrounding areas.

Registration is from 3.30pm on Friday, closing on Sunday May 19 at 3.30pm.

An exciting BioBlitz aimed at tracking down and identifying as many animals, plants and other living natural resources as possible is being planned for northern Cooloola in May.

EDNESDAYS IN RAINBOW are gaining a green, white and red accent.

Locals are invited to join the group “You say spghedi, I say spaghetti,” created by Elisa Mele Seul, an experienced Education Manager from Italy.

You now have the opportunity to learn Italian, but mostly you can enjoy an Italian experience in town, with Arcobaleno on the Beach (known as Arcos) giving you the perfect background.

Elisa said it was her daughter who inspired the classes.

“Sofia is two years old and I have only spoken Italian with her since she was in the womb. We speak Italian even when we are around town or at playgroups, so some residents started to say that they would like to learn Italian or that their kids were interested.

“Been born and raised in the Italian island of Sardinia I was bilingual myself and at

school I kept adding more languages, as in High School.”

In fact, Elisa specialised in foreign literatures and cultures, with an impressive command of French, Spanish, English, Latin and of course Italian and Sardinian.

Elisa told us she arrived at Cooloola Cove in 2013 to work as a nanny, “After a week I came to see Rainbow Beach and it has been love at first sight; after one year I met Sean and I have been here since.”

Arcos has been home for many Italians during the past years, with Tony and Tanya Heading welcoming their adopted team, some of whom have settled in our community.

Elisa admitted, “If I am homesick, Arcos helps me soothe the spirit, some of the staff there are also Italian and they will be helping me in recreating the foreign atmosphere.”

Elisa hopes the classes will be ongoing, “The Community Centre offers a great

space for classes and meetings, a bit more private to build the foundation of learning. I have a feeling we will end up mixing cooking classes and Italian lessons!

“I am looking forward to be able to share who I really am and to be understood while connecting with other locals.”

Who does not like Italian food? Imagine being able to order it in Italian on the last Wednesday of each month.

So learn the basics in an easy way - 5pm until 6/6.30pm, every Wednesday in May at the Rainbow Beach Community Centre. It is $75pp for the first three classes (plus pay for your dinner on the 29th).

Whilst you are enjoying a lovely al fresco meal, remember the one rule: be a tourist for one evening, pretending you are in Italy and you have to speak and understand Italian!

We need you! This 48 hour BioBlitz is open for teens to retirees. No natural history expertise is required because there will be very experienced mentors and leaders accompanying all the teams on their field excursions to help find, identify and document as many species as possible and provide information.

Last year Cooloola Coastcare and Bioblitz volunteers discovered 38 NEW species unknown to science!

Organisers have identified specific habitats for close scrutiny by the various teams that range from the seashore to the high dunes, from the rainforest to the wallum heathlands and from the fens to the mangroves.

Mother’s Day Classic has a new route 10 Mother’s Day Gift Ideas

HE TIN CAN BAY Mother’s Day Classic will be taking a different direction this year.

While the goal of the day is still about increasing awareness of breast cancer, celebrating lives touched by breast cancer and raising funds for breast cancer research through a fun, healthy and inspiring event, participants will be walking a new way in 2019.

“Previously the route has been around the township of Tin Can Bay but to avoid the numerous road crossings it was decided to utilise the foreshore walking path instead,” event organiser Jess Milne explained.

The start/finish line will be in Wes Mitchell Park near the playground.

Held on Mother’s Day each year, the Classic has raised over 35 million dollars since 1998 and has become the National Breast Cancer Foundation’s biggest annual injection of funds.

Since 1994 the five-year survival rate has improved from 76% to 91% and this can be contributed to the positive impact research is having on survival rates.

HE POSTPARTUM period of child rearing can be the craziest time of your life.

Amidst the ‘to-do lists’ and schedules, new parents may feel a little lost, unheard and perhaps friendless.

The Cooloola Coast is very lucky to have some amazing programs running in the community for children under five.

Programs that, although focus on a child’s development and social skills, really nurture parents and caregivers too.

Some parents think you need a walking, talking child to attend these groups, but you don’t! It will benefit both adult and child to attend from birth to school aged.

Playgroup is a great place to start. Little Guppies Playgroup runs every Tuesday, starting at 9.30am on the corner of Bream St and Emperor St, Tin Can Bay. In Rainbow Beach, Sarah Brantz runs a Playgroup Queensland program and a Pre-Prep program at Rainbow Beach State School every Thursday of the school term, 9-11am.

Both groups are an informal and inclusive catch up, with tea, coffee and bickies provided, mums and dads can chat to other adults, while the little babes crawl over each other to organised play stations, and the bigger kids can exert their energy with an array of outdoor equipment, or seasonal arts and crafts. Gold coin donation is appreciated.

First 5 Forever is a free program, running every Monday at the Rainbow Beach Library, 10am-11am and every Thursday at the Tin Can Bay Library, 9.30-10.30am (except for public holidays).

First 5 Forever focuses on what growing brains need. Talking, playing, reading and singing to your baby all play a huge part in their communication, reading and writing skills when they’re older.

These sessions include songs and nursery rhymes, story time, craft time and bickies for the kids. Tea, coffee and a friendly face provided. For more information, pop into either library or visit first5forever.org.au.

Head Coach, BJ Parton, at Rainbow Beach Aquatic Centre runs weekly Mums and Bubs and Learn to Swim classes. Being comfortable in the water from a young age assists your child in having a healthy attitude to exercise, while learning vital and lifelong skills. Pop into the Aquatic Centre or give BJ a call 5486 3191 (#3) to have a chat about lessons.

Don’t forget to utilise our natural environment. The Cooloola Coast is lucky to have refurbished parks and playgrounds that are suitable for children of all ages. Pop a picnic blanket and some lunch in the pram, call a friend and head down to the beach or park for a play.

Remember to treat yourself with love and kindness.

Although rewarding, being a parent can be exhausting.

Your mental health and general wellbeing is so important to your family’s happiness.

Sometimes a simple visit to one of these groups is all it takes to feel human again!

Mick hands over the

greens

Greenkeeper, Mick Hall retired last November after 25 years service for Tin Can Bay Country Club, he recounts some of those times and welcomes new greenkeeper, Dustin Carne.

ICK HALL was responsible for maintaining the 18 hole golf course and two bowling greens, full time for 38 hours each week and some weekends, for a quarter of a century at the Tin Can Bay Country Club.

Mick said, “I enjoy living in this region and I loved my work and being responsible for the golf and bowls greens and seeing it transform into the beautiful greens it is today.”

Twenty five years is a long time to devote yourself to the one place, but Mick said, “I lived my whole life in the bush and moved to this area for a coastal change.”

Born in Warialda, NSW, he said, “I started work at the Warialda Golf and Bowls Club in 1993 where I did my apprenticeship.”

Mick moved to Cooloola Cove and his plan is to remain here in his retirement, fishing and relaxing. Being near the ocean was the drawcard for him, “I love holidaying in the bush and then returning to be near the water.”

When asked about his memorable moments, Mick had a few: “Watching managers come and go – eight managers in seven years! Seeing the club house development from a tiny shed into the bar, restaurant and function room club house it is today. And finally, the creation of the second bowling green.”

He said there was always plenty to laugh at, “too many to say”. But it was good to hear

he was able to enjoy the fruits of his labours, “I played golf every week, been playing golf since 1966. I played bowls all the time and I was very good at it.”

As for challenges over the years, he said they rebuilt most of the golf greens: “When I first started the greens were full of weeds and the bark two-foot high at the base of the trees, all raked up and carted away.

“This was a big job but very rewarding.

Also there was no water them days, but now treated water is pumped into the dams.”

Challenges that his successor, Dustin Carne, does not have to worry about.

“I’ve been finishing off old projects, maintaining golf and bowling greens, keeping true and firm playing surfaces for our members.”

Dustin, the new greenkeeper, was born in Injune, and moved into this region in 2004:

“I started at the country club in September 2015 as an assistant labourer, signed my apprenticeship papers in December 2015 and completed my studies in November 2018.”

He has a new apprentice and three other staff working under his instruction.

Now based in Tin Can Bay, the first few months in charge have been a little stressful, “As I have big boots to fill. The country club has a Pro-Am organised for June this year, I have to ensure that the entire golf course is looking in top condition.”

This includes removal of bricks around each tee, to tidy up the course and simplify maintenance, improving the entrance gardens, turfing around the entrance to the golf starters box and implementing new work practices.

He would like to thank Mick for all he has done for him over the years.

Mick left with some parting advice for Dustin: “Don’t take any nonsense from the members and do things your way.”

And a tip for members: “Appreciate the beauty of your facilities and what this region has to offer.”

Nominations open for Who’s Got Talent?

The annual Cooloola’s Got Talent showcase is fast approaching and nominations are now open. Hosted by the Cooloola Coast Youth Activity Project, the event is a great way for kids to gain confidence and onstage experience in a no pressure environment. Encourage your child to give it a go!

Simply Classical Concert A cornerstone of the upcoming May concert of Simply Classical will be a Ständchen, German for serenade. An interesting piece by Schubert due to its configuration: a male choir, with a female soloist, is serenading the imagined beloved.

Violinist Helen Brereton (pictured with pianist, Irina Prodger) will play a powerful and dramatic Elegy by Tchaikovsky, and her accompanist will play the Moonlight Sonata.

Young Brisbane cellist, Daniel Shearer will also perform, with Alex Rainieri, a renowned concert pianist with international experience. Local student, George Allen, will play a saxophone repertoire to fit the theme.

Quilts with Messages Gympie Regional Gallery is hosting an exhibition of quilts by members of Queensland Quilters Inc. titled “State of the Art (SOTA19)”. The exhibition recognises quilting as an art form and demonstrates the changing nature of the quilting arts.

Both practical and beautiful, these quilts can tell stories of our environment, relationships and social issues, like featured image ‘Forest’ by Julie Harding.

A wide range of techniques lovingly bring these pieces of fabric together; including painting, printing, eco dyeing, collage, hand and machine stitching and combinations of these.

The exhibition will continue until 18 May.

Singalong at Music Plus The evening starts with a band number followed by a singalong (pictured are Frank on Bass, Gunther on guitar, Debbie on flute, Len on treble recorder and Pam on piano).

The programme is then shared by a variety of local musicians playing, singing or speaking and you will be warmly entertained by any combination of the following: guitars, singing, mandolins, piano, harmonica, ukuleles, choir, poems, funny stories, and jokes.

EQ’S BEST of Queensland were released recently and it was wonderful to see that 11 tourism operators from the Gympie region were ranked in the top 50 on the Sunshine Coast.

A credit to the growing strength and depth of the industry in the region.

ALKING TO THE lookout, the dog and I came across three puzzled looking backpackers.

I asked if I could help.

“We are looking for the words?” said one.

“How good is living?” said another.

“Have you found the rainbow steps?” I queried.

“Yes, but they are not there - is there another rainbow? Our friend had his photo with the word a couple of days ago?”

That’s when the penny dropped.

These were three young people from England. They hadn’t heard of Carlo Sandblow, our Coloured Sands or our other beauties. They could have taken that photo with the rainbow, but it was the words they wanted their photo with!

They asked me why? Why would someone remove the words? I was embarrassed to explain.

After months of a stand-off, the words were removed. Since then they were back on again and I hesitate to say what the status is at the moment.

UK travellers, Elliot Pitt, Lauren Witherspoon and Hannah Earle visited the rainbow steps and want to know where are the words “How good is living”

Sam Mitchell from Rainbow Beach Tourist Information Centre says that tourists don’t see the words as an issue. Sam says they do see it as ludicrous that there is a dispute.

The store receives many enquiries for directions to the steps. “They come and say ’the words are gone’ and ‘where are the words?’’ he said.

Check out the top Instagram photos for #rainbowbeach - 6 out of 9 of the TOP photos were the rainbow steps and words.

It seems the words and rainbow are part of Rainbow Beach.

So much so, Sam and his wife Maureen saw the opportunity and created their own “How good is living” merchandise. Why? “Because the tourists love and want it.”

His bash vehicle now sports the brand as well, Sam thought that would be a good thing to bring to his 20th Variety Bash next year.

This year, he’s taking his beach buggy - it leaves Mackay at the end of August, and finishes at the Gold Coast. About 400 ‘Bashers’ will have an R&R day in Rainbow Beach, September 1-2.

EGULAR READERS of this column may recall that – after a 35-year career – Senior Constable Lee Jones has left the building. Rumour has it that retirement is treating him well, and that he still makes the odd local appearance between long lunches, sunset cruises and cooking his ‘signature dish’ of BBQ pork ribs. We wish him well...

Of course, the rest of us have been curious as to who would replace the old vulture, and I am now pleased to be able to introduce you all to Senior Constable Liam Braunberger.

Liam comes to us with a wealth of experience in small-town policing, having most recently been stationed in the

western Queensland town of Wandoan (I had to look up where that was!). Needless to say, the sight and smell of the ocean is a novelty for Liam at the moment...and so too is the sound of rain on the roof.

Prior to Wandoan, Liam was stationed in Brisbane, Indooroopilly and Ferny Grove – and previously worked as an engineer in the Australian Army. It’s probably no surprise that, after all that moving around, Liam is pretty happy to be back on the coast where he can now settle down permanently with his wife and two young boys.

Liam will officially be stationed at Tin Can Bay, but will be living here in Rainbow Beach with his family. When he’s not working, you will most likely find him at the gym,

fishing, or walking his two dogs. Be warned that one dog is apparently placid and the other one is crazy – he’s not saying which is which!

Like his predecessor, Liam also has a ‘signature dish’ befitting of his German heritage: and I reckon Liam’s schnitzels will be a welcome addition to Leroy’s ribs…

Fisherman, skipper, boat builder, not quite mechanic, somewhat engineer and all around tinkerer of everything land and sea, Ian Dean has been an integral part of the Cooloola Coast’s short history.

So much history, we’ve had to share it across two editions… here’s part one.

The Early Days “I moved from Gympie with my parents to their holiday house in Tin Can Bay in 1964, I was aged 16. My father bought a fishing “party boat”, taking 8 – 10 men, fishing and crabbing the sandy straits.

We fished for whiting, jew, squire, bream, tailor…”

Think of a street name in Tin Can Bay and they fished for it!

“The trawling industry in Tin Can’s early days was the most exciting time of my life! No one knew where you were, there was no radio contact, no lights, no phones, nothing!”

When the road to Rainbow Beach was constructed in 1965 to allow access to the Queensland Titanium Mines (QTM) project in the area, the trip into town became much easier for Ian and the other workers stationed in Tin Can. “I started working at QTM as a lab tech for some years. I did all the assaying (analysis of a material to determine its substance and quality) of sand samples all down through Freshwater Road, Fraser Island and all around Double Island Point.

The drillers would come in and out for ten days, take samples, dry them all, split them up, do the assay for each hole, each depth,

then I’d transfer them over to a big map, to show where all the concentrate was.”

Ian would then coordinate with the samplers to ensure the efficiency of the processes. The mineral concentrate would be separated and sent out a large chute to a pile for later processing, the tailings would go back to fill the cleared area.

“If the concentrate had too much sand in it the shift bosses were sleeping and weren’t keeping an eye on their machines!”

The sand mixture would be separated using a cyclone, the heavy minerals falling to the center as it rotated. This concentrated mix was rinsed in a caustic tank to dissolve the heavy metals and

separate organic material and quartz (sand) as waste product.

Ilmenite, which is magnetic, would be extracted using an alternating current that would generate a magnetic field. The remaining materials would then feed down into the hoppers, and then be split up as Rutile, Zircon, Monazite and shipped to Brisbane for further processing.

“Rutile was used for making titanium.

Zircon was used to make paint and glass and a few other things. The Monazite was radioactive, but I used to swim in it!

I would do mill testing, making sure the weighbridge belts were right.

did it for about three years I think.”

Completing the holy trinity of Cooloola Coast living, Ian also spent time working and living at Cooloola Cove. Originally owned by 13 business people from Gympie for the pasturing of 2500 head of cattle, Ian spent a brief period working on the property before it was sold to a Melbourne consortium for the development of housing.

“I was only there for a small time. The cattle pastured from Endeavour all the way down to the bridge on Investigator. I had built my house on Investigator Avenue not long after that so they must’ve opened it up about 40 years ago now.”

The Barges and Fraser Island In 1972, while working in his spare time on a 48ft trawler, one of many built over his lifetime, Ian received a call from Rainbow Beach’s first land owner and operator of the Fraser Island ferries, Gordon Elmer.

“I got a call from Gordon one day, to say

his skipper was ill, could I drive for the day? I knew Gordon for many years prior and was happy to start driving for him. When I first started he had a few barges already. He had The Dawn but The Lady wasn’t built yet, I think he had five in total.”

When Gordon retired the services, the barges kept on working, being sent to various locations around the country.

The Dawn 2 was sold on to Stradbroke Island mining ponds as a service vehicle, transporting workers and fuel.

The Lady Fraser was sold to Richards Branson for the service of his Makepeace Island at Noosa. Amateur drone footage recently surfaced online, showing her crossing the Noosa Bar on her way north to service islands around Airlie Beach, being sold on from its service at Makepeace.

“I stayed with Gordon until his retirement in about ‘89.”

“In the early ‘80’s I had the boat Moondarra, and we ran a two-in-one tour.

I used to leave Tin Can, go to Bullock Point, pick up people from both places. John Hawley was my business partner at the time.”

They would then hit the beach with a 4WD, taking passengers up the beach to Dili village, Lake Boomanjin, Birrabeen, down through “Yankee Jack” rainforest and back to Garry’s Anchorage to meet the boat again.

“There we would have lunch already cooked, the people on the boat cruise would have a fish and lunch already done, then we’d swap everyone over. Some people would just stay in the boat all day drinking!

“It was great running those tours, everyone had a great time!”

Each day, a familiar sight in Rainbow Beach comes in the colourfully dressed form of Yvonne Connelly, who burns a track on the pavement and even inspired an artwork at the Artyball! Trish Torenbeek caught up with Yvonne to find out how she came to Rainbow Beach, and why she is compelled to walk.

VONNE CONNELLY – otherwise referred to as ‘The Walking Lady’ came to town on a house-sitting mission about four years ago. She had lived in the region for a few years prior, looking after residences in Tin Can Bay and Cooloola Cove, so when a property became available in Rainbow Beach, she was very happy to take it on.

Yvonne discovered our beautiful town and fell in love with it many years ago when she’d moved from the NSW Central Coast to Widgee.

Born in Ryde, Sydney in 1951, Yvonne spent her childhood in the big city where her parents owned and operated an auto electrical business. Sadly her father passed away when she was eight years old, but her mother continued to run the office and staff.

After leaving school at age 17, Yvonne took over the management of the business as she was interested in the work.

“I had to shrink a pair of overalls to fit me,” states Yvonne. “It was a very unusual situation to have a girl working in a man’s environment back then.”

Yvonne went on to gain experience in bar

work and property management, also becoming a hospital assistant at Lady Davidson Private Hospital in Sydney’s North Shore.

Her family owned real estate in Empire Bay and in 1977, when Yvonne was 26, she invested in the property and lived there for around 20 years. During that time, she travelled overseas with her mother and rather than catching the local transport or hiring vehicles, they would sight-see on foot, covering many kilometres daily.

“It’s in our blood on my mum’s side,” says Yvonne. “We go back at least 3 generations, in fact my grandmother, Ethel Bell, was also dubbed ‘The Walking Lady’ as she was a regular sight around Cabramatta many years ago.”

Married in her thirties, she became a mum to Jannah and Ryan, who now have families of their own. In 2008, Yvonne started a new chapter in her life as a single lady once again.

Seven days a week we see our walking lady out and about, gracing the footpath, beach and the bush tracks to fulfil her goal of an average of 25 kilometres.

“Some days I only do 10 kilometres,

depending on the conditions, but I’ve reached 50 kilometres on many occasions.

My favourite spots are the beach, so I can cool off by putting my feet in the water, and the tracks through the bushland.”

On one occasion, without warning, she came across a large black snake on the path, but as she was at full speed she had to leap right over it!

“I had no idea I could jump so high,” laughs Yvonne, “It was like I had grown wings.”

One other instance saw her saved by a split-second decision, as on an incredibly gusty day a large tree limb fell on the path behind her.

“I was about to turn back but I made a quick decision to keep going, then suddenly the limb came crashing down. I was so

Yvonne has travellers asking her for directions often when she’s on the move, plus some crazy questions which mostly make her laugh, like how many outfits does she have? In answer to that, it’s between 40 and 50.

Swimsuits and practical gym wear is her preference, as it keeps her cool and dry. Recently, an activewear pop-up shop benefitted handsomely from Yvonne’s interest! She also dons some very stylish hats and has a collection of around a dozen.

On most mornings, Yvonne sets out with a plan of where she will explore, but it often doesn’t end up that way…

process memories or clear my mind of daily life, sometimes people say hello but I don’t always hear them and they think I’m rude!”

Having sight issues has been a problem too, however recent eye surgery has improved that situation.

Sometimes you will see Yvonne with a couple of furry companions, she is happy to have the company of her friends’ dogs as she walks.

She also appreciates the fact that people like to stop and talk as she powers along: “This is a lovely town with so many lovely people, thank you to everyone who gives me a wave.”

Leonie is not alone in her talent as an artist, as Yvonne reveals she too loves to draw. “I may enter something in this year’s event” she teases. “If not, I’ll be up on the dancefloor anyway!”

Yvonne’s other interests are food and cooking, “I love seafood, teamed with a crisp beverage, in fact my three favourite W’s are Walking, Water and Wine!”

CACIAS OR WATTLES are a significant Australian species. The golden wattle is Australia’s floral emblem and the green and gold of the wattle leaves and flowers are our official colours.

Acacias are a common feature of the Australian bush, though are more often found in arid, semi-arid and dry subtropical areas. They act as pioneer plants after bushfires as they germinate quickly and thus provide protection for slower growing plants.

The foliage varies greatly in size and shape and colours range from dark or light green to blue/grey/silver.

Flowers appear in balls or cylindrical spikes and vary from cream to bright yellow. Many have a delicate perfume. Many flower in late winter, so wattle flowering is often seen to herald spring.

Certain species of acacia can be used to attract birds, bees and butterflies to your garden.

Disaster Preparedness workshops In 2019, workshops are being held throughout the Gympie region to assist not-for-profit community and sporting groups prepare for disaster events.

DROUGHT REPORT QCoast2100 program to prepare a Coastal Hazard Adaptation Strategy (CHAS).

The project team will be working closely with the community to develop a region-specific strategy document that identifies key natural and built assets of economic, cultural and community importance in coastal areas of the region.

The team will then assesses the likelihood of a coastal hazard up until 2100 and the impact a hazard would have on the region’s natural and built assets. They also aim to develop strategies to respond to coastal hazards to minimise the impact on the community.

What do you value most about the coast? The project team are keen to tap into your knowledge of how the coast has changed, and how coastal hazards affect the spaces you know.

Your input could help shape and influence the outcomes of the CHAS. Residents and local businesses and the community can get involved in a few ways: completing a survey and becoming a member an voice for the Community Reference Group (CRG).

Expressions-of-interest to be part of this group will be called during May 2019.

Opportunity for young artists Now in its eighth year, Project Connect is a unique collaboration between local professional artists as mentors and young aspiring artists of the region.

Selected young people (from grades 10, 11 and 12) work with the artists in their studios, where they gain first-hand knowledge of studio practice, while developing work towards an exhibition with Hi Artworks in August/September.

Project Connect runs in term 2 and beginning of term 3, culminating with the curation and installation of the exhibition at Gympie Regional Gallery.

Previous participants have benefited from the genuine industry connections and the opportunity to experience working in a professional arts environment. Entries close on Friday May 17.

Council’s pop-up events seeking the community’s feedback on our coastlines – what changes have we noticed and what needs to be protected – are happening in our region’s tourist hotspot, May 25 8-10am Cooloola Cove, location to be advised; in Tin Can Bay at Wes Mitchell Park from 11am-1pm (across the road from the library), and Rainbow Beach at Lawrie Hanson Park, near the anchor, 3-5pm.

The Cooloola Coast – The Resilient Coast project will better prepare Council and the community to respond to coastal hazards such as storm tide flooding, sea level rises and coastal erosion.

Gympie Regional Council is one of 31 coastal councils in Queensland to receive funding from the State Government’s

Works on the $276,300 Tin Can Bay Road and Maryborough– Cooloola Road intersection upgrade has begun.

Transport and Main Roads work crews would widen Tin Can Bay Road and install a dedicated right-turn lane.

Works will also include the installation of new signage, line marking and a designated clear zone.

Works are expected to be completed by the end of May, weather permitting and will generally occur between 6am and 6pm, Monday to Friday.

S YOU MAY BE aware there were massive floods in Northern Queensland this year which affected an area from Townsville across to Julia Creek and down to west of Winton. As I write a lot of this water has now reached Lake Eyre.

Last month, another rain depression brought good rain to West and Central West Queensland and also follow up falls to the Julia Creek area, which was rapidly drying out. Many areas had around 150mm with Blackall and Isisford getting around 300mm.

Unfortunately falls really lightened off south of Charleville to Morven, with places like Cunnamulla, St George and the south getting next to nothing.The area that we provide food hampers to around Longreach now have a green pick, but there is hardly any stock in the area. A follow up rain is badly needed for growth.

Our job has to continue and that is putting food on the table for farmers.

Most people don’t realise it doesn’t rain dollars and now the press have gone quiet on drought, life gets harder.

As I said, hardly any properties are stocked so there is no income, and stock prices are so high, so which banks are going to lend? They have been warned to go easy on these farmers and not sell people up but the writing is on the wall for many.

Our last trip out west was postponed due to the state of the roads after rain and by the time you read this, we will have left on April 24 with a big load of food.

Instead of food supplies since Christmas we have sent out $12,000 in Visa cards for fuel and food. Many of our collection tins are around Tin Can Bay with two in Rainbow Beach at Ed’s Beach Bakery and the Pharmacy, and both IGAs have trolleys for donations.The Bank of Queensland in Gympie will accept donations also.

HE FIRST WEEKS of Term 2 at Rainbow Beach State School are extremely busy with Anzac Day, Cross Country, Leaders’ Badge Presentation (8.30am, May 3), NAPLAN (May 14-16) and Athletics.

A new P&C Committee The Rainbow Beach State School P&C AGM was a very successful night with a new executive committee formed.

I thank the executive committee from 2018 and welcome our new committee members: President – Jed Elmer, Vice President – Kirstie Jordison, Secretary – Tyla Elmer and Treasurer – Martine Lokan. We look forward to a successful 2019.

Year 6 Camp Last month, the year sixes travelled south, to Tallebudgera camp, and participated in a range of difficult team building activities.

During the week, we had scary challenges like high ropes and zip lines, which went over an abundance of wildlife including crocodiles, emus, kangaroos, bush turkeys and water dragons.

Each day was classified into a hero theme - Warrior hero, Mastermind hero, Guardian hero and Champion hero - and had a range of activities to match with the characteristics of these hero types.

I was a Mastermind and enjoyed Escape Rooms, which were three rooms that have clues scattered across them, and you have to use the clues to escape in a time limit.

On the contrary, Rubi was a Guardian hero and enjoyed team games that included everyone.

She enjoyed informing everyone about dinosaurs on Guardian day.

The camp food was amazing as well as the night activities like movies, dancing, karaoke and a magic show. I’m sure all the year sixes enjoyed this camp thoroughly.

Tin Can Bay P-10 School News Tuncan Reigns Supreme!

Congratulations to Tuncun who has once again outscored Wallu, this time in the school Cross Country and Fun Run. Student attendance and participation was high and the competition was fierce as yellow and blue flashed around the courses.

The sports captains did a fantastic job leading cheers, supporting runners and keeping spirits high. Thank you to all family and community members who came along to enjoy the atmosphere and cheer on the runners.

Wallu’s last chance of redemption will be the 4-10 Athletics Carnival and P-3 Mini Olympics to be held in June. Families are welcome to come along and watch the fun.

Year 9 and 10 Brisbane ANZAC Excursion On Wednesday, April 24, the Year 9 and 10 students began their term 2 History units with an excursion to Brisbane to gain a deeper understanding of Australia’s involvement in World War I and II. They were among more than 2000 students involved in the very moving and solemn Student ANZAC service, held at ANZAC Square in the city.

Students then visited the ANZAC Legacy Gallery at Queensland Museum to explore the stories of Queensland soldiers involved in war, personal items belonging to those on the front line, and objects of war and warfare - including the Mephisto – the only surviving WWI German Army Tanker in the world.

Coloured Sands Starting below the lookout, walk along the beach towards Double Island Point for a kilometre or so to these amazing Coloured sand cliffs, with the best colours around 9 to 10 kilometres along the beach (accessible with a 4wd or Surf and Sand Safari tour) 5486 3131.

Carlo Sand Blow A bush walk up to Carlo Sand Blow is a must for every visitor. Drive to the reservoir at the top of Cooloola Drive. The Blow is an easy 600m walk from the car park or take the longer walk from the National Parks Office. Spectacular views of the Coloured Sands, Double Island Point and Tin Can Bay Inlet are the bonus for your efforts. When the thermals are right, you will often see Hang Gliders taking off and landing at this beautiful piece of Nature’s Sculpture.

Lake Poona After morning tea or lunch in the picnic area you can venture on some wonderful walks to Lake Poona or through some spectacular Rainforest. Allow 40 minutes to reach Lake Poona.

Lake Freshwater Only accessible by 4WD, Tour or Walking. Walking tracks starts at the Bymien picnic area. The round trip from Rainbow Beach will take a full day and requires fitness.

Foreshore Tin Can Bay You can walk 4km from Crabs Creek to Norman Point, over picturesque bridges, signage of flora and fauna, through mangroves, playgrounds and outdoor gyms. It is mostly flat – very safe for children on wheels. Start at the playground opposite the library, cycle to Crabs Creek and stop for a coffee, then return to opposite the library. Enjoy the views out to the inlet while the kids enjoy the playground and skatepark.

What a difference a month can make to the fishing!

Tin Can Bay Fishing Club report

T

HE MANGROVE JACKS that were feeding so aggressively a month ago during the hot weather have become elusive now the weather and water temperature have cooled down a bit.

The strong winds from the cyclone made fishing nearly impossible for more than a week giving an opportunity for a bit of boat and fishing gear maintenance.

The bream, whiting and flathead have been a bit hit-and-miss lately with only occasional good catches. The mud crabs seem to be less active than they were, but I guess that you can only catch and eat them once and the last few months has seen exceptionally good catches.

There are a few squid around to be caught by those who are putting the time in to find where they are on the day.

There have been moderate catches of reef species when the tide and wind allow fishing on the ledges and reefs.

There has been quite a few nannygai caught on the inside reefs lately but be aware of the legal size. Large schools of fairly big tuna have been seen actively feeding on the bait fish around the Inskip and Big Mick area, this activity should increase as the weather cools.

There seems to be increasing numbers of turtles not only in the deeper channels but also in the creeks, so be on the lookout while traveling as they can be difficult to see, particularly if the water is a bit choppy. The squid are now getting to a quantity worth targeting.

The winner of the February mini comp with a mangrove jack 50 cm and 1.895 kg and 210 points was Shane Slockee. Keely Rose standout catches: Milton with a Red Emperor, 58 cm 3.67 kg, and Lyn (with a little help) caught a Red Emperor, 60 cm 3.97 kg.

Nominations doubled what was expected at Rainbow Beach’s first Bull and Bronc Spectacular: with 120 competitors - including 25 in the Open Bull, 3 PBR and 2 World Champs Above: Andrew McCarthy from Rainbow Beach Horse Rides, Kroppy (Nathan Kropp) from the Sports Club and Shane Handy from the Surf Club organised the successful event.

Kroppy said it wasn’t about the Sports Club - but giving back to all the small businesses, he said eventslike these keep accommodation and eateries full, and our locals in jobs. The Rodeo Association have asked the team to hold the event twice a year!

Regattas for Cooloola Dragon Boat members Gwyneth Moore

OOLOOLA DRAGONS competed as part of the Wide Bay Warriors at the Queensland State Titles at Lake Kawana last month. Much excitement in our camp when the Wide Bay Warriors Premiere team took Bronze in the 500-metres 20’s. Well done to Cooloola members Shane, Chris and Jacqueline for a great race.

Last month Cooloola team members celebrated Jean Barnett’s 93rd birthday at the TCB Country Club. Jean is our greatest and most loved fan and follower!

Bundaberg was the venue for the first regatta of the Wide Bay Series. Great racing once again by all, but 1770

took out the prize! More training everyone!

Trust you have July 20/21 in your dairies. The Cooloola Dragon Regatta, as our part in the Wide Bay Series, will be held on Snapper Creek on those dates.

The town will be alive with Dragons from “ all over”.

Come to the TCB Yacht Club and be part of a great weekend!

Table tennis winners announced R A S PROMISED last issue, we bring you the winners of competition 5, Jack McColl in level 1 and Pam Runnegar in level 2.

The competition’s final rounds remained tight, with order of merit in level 1 as follows: Jack, Daniel Dinoia, Heatley Gilmore, Brad Hethorn, Michael Brantz,

Kirsty McCarthy, Dave Arthur, Allan Wegner and Marty Baldry.

In level 2 the final table was Pam, Trish Torenbeek, Tina McColl, Lyn Bleakley, James Worthington, Archie Gilmore, Peter Fuller and James Runnegar.

More competitions to come in the future.

A Little Humour WITH THE DOCTOR My four year old daughter had a terrible case of the flu, she was achy, had a high fever and was very hoarse. After waiting at the Doctor’s office for over an hour, we were finally admitted to see the Doctor.

After the usual routine of listening to her breathing and checking her ears, the Doctor looked my daughter in the eye and said “so what would you say is bothering you the most?”

Without skipping a beat, my daughter promptly answered “Billy, he’s always breaking my toys!”

A lady came in for a routine physical at the Doctor’s office. “Here”, said the nurse, handing her a urine specimen container.

“The bathroom is over there on your right. The Doctor will be with you in a few minutes.”

A short while later, the lady came out of the bathroom with an empty container and a relieved look on her face.

“Thanks, but they had a toilet in there, so I didn’t need this after all!”

Brian, one of the world’s greatest hypochondriacs, bumped into his doctor one day, at the supermarket.

“Doc!” Brian exclaimed, “I’ve been meaning to tell you, remember those voices I kept on hearing in my head? I haven’t heard them in over a week!”

“Wow, what wonderful news Brian, I’m so happy for you!” his Doctor exclaimed.

“Wonderful?” asked a dismal looking Brian,”There’s nothing wonderful about it, I’m afraid my hearing is starting to go now!”

Doctor. “I am not exactly sure of the cause. I think it could be due to alcohol.”

Patient. “That’s okay. I will come back when you are sober.”

I was very scared about going to the Doctor to get a certain procedure done on my eyes. The Doctor tried to put me at

ease but to no avail. It was after he finished with my first eye that I nearly jumped out of the chair. “There there” he said “Only one eye left!”

Jerry was in the hospital recovering from surgery when a nurse asks him how he’s feeling.

“I’m okay, but I don’t like the four letter word the Doctor used in surgery,” He answered.

“What did he say?” asked the nurse “OOPS!” CHAT WITH GOD There was a preacher who fell into the ocean and he couldn’t swim. When a boat came by, the captain yelled, “Do you need help sir?”

The preacher calmly said “No, God will save me.”

A little later, another boat came by, and a fisherman asked, “Hey, do you need help?”

The preacher replied again, “No, God will save me.”

Eventually the preacher drowned and went to heaven.

The preacher asked God, “Why didn’t you save me?”

God replied “Fool, I sent you two boats!”

THE SPOON A lesson on how consultants can make a difference in an organisation. Last week, we took some friends to a new restaurant, ‘Steve’s Place,’ and noticed that the waiter who took our order carried a spoon in his shirt pocket. It seemed a little strange.

When the busboy brought our water and utensils, I observed that he also had a spoon in his shirt pocket. Then I looked around and saw that all the staff had spoons in their pockets.

When the waiter came back to serve our soup I inquired, ‘Why the spoon?’

‘Well,’ he explained, ‘the restaurant’s owner hired Andersen Consulting to revamp all of our processes. After several months of analysis, they concluded that the

spoon was the most frequently dropped utensil. It represents a drop frequency of approximately 3 spoons per table per hour.

‘If our personnel are better prepared, we can reduce the number of trips back to the kitchen and save 15 man-hours per shift.’

As luck would have it, I dropped my spoon and he replaced it with his spare.

‘I’ll get another spoon next time I go to the kitchen instead of making an extra trip to get it right now.’ I was impressed.

I also noticed that there was a string hanging out of the waiter’s fly.

Looking around, I saw that all of the waiters had the same string hanging from their flies. So, before he walked off, I asked the waiter, ‘Excuse me, but can you tell me why you have that string right there?’

‘Oh, certainly!’ Then he lowered his voice. ‘Not everyone is so observant. That consulting firm I mentioned also learned that we can save time in the restroom. By tying this string to the tip of our you-knowwhat, we can pull it out without touching it and eliminate the need to wash our hands, shortening the time spent in the restroom by 76.39%.

I asked quietly, ‘After you get it out, how do you put it back?’ .‘Well,’ he whispered, ‘I don’t know about the others, but I use the spoon.’

THAT’S PUNNY Someone at work has snuck into the armoury and put glue on all our guns.

Everyone’s denying it, but I’m sticking to my guns...

A somewhat inexperienced musician, who joined an orchestra on a cruise ship, was having a terrible time keeping time with the rest of the band.

Finally, the band leader said, “Look, either you learn to keep time or I’ll throw you overboard....so it’s up to you, sync or swim.”

A careful study of economics usually reveals that the best time to buy anything is last year.

Three old men are at the doctor for a memory test. The doctor says to the first old man, “What is three times three?”

“274” was his reply.

The doctor worriedly says to the second man, “It’s your turn. What is three times three?”

“Tuesday” replies the second man.

The doctor sadly says to the third man, “Okay, your turn. What’s three times three”?

“Nine” says the third man.

“That’s great!” exclaims the doctor.

“How did you get that”?

“Jeez, Doc, it’s pretty simple,” says the third man. “I just subtracted 274 from Tuesday.”

“I rang up British Telecom and said: ‘I want to report a nuisance caller.’

He said: ‘Not you again.’”

Hi again to all in Rainbow Beach.

With Easter over, of course the weather will turn beau ful, but it’s one of those things I don’t seem to be able to control.

As usual, I’m ge�ng hassled to write this (it would be so much easier if someone else in a repor ng role would write this, probably be easier than hassling me, but anyway) [Ed note: but NO ONE could write the sports report like you, Ma��. It’s Wednesday a�ernoon before another public holiday and I’m supposed to be wri ng next month’s column?

On to the elec on (I think I’ve had enough already) I’ll need my electric chair, I mean car, to get out a bit more o�en.

Hopefully we’re not like Vic and SA so I should be able to get to charge it as well at night when no one else is using any electricity (apparently).

Considering my dad was a union organiser and member of the Labor party it goes to show how different we all can turn out.

Dad always said that the ruling party was only as good as the opposi on (obviously not much hope when you see Clive Palmer actually maybe winning a seat). Wonder if his nephew can s ll vote - absentee of course!

Sports Report - well what can I say about the Broncos (not much), who would have thought the Reds would have won more matches, second in the Aust conference?

The Cricket World Cup teams have been named, not really that interested (just want to beat the poms in The Ashes later in the year). Hopefully they won't get caught this me!

Can't say much about the Roar either, apart from that “GOD” maybe the saviour? Only me will tell.

Things aren’t going all that well for Daniel Riccardo, I suppose a paycheck of 50M (slightly up from the 10 from Red Bull) a year helps your cause not to win a F1, but anyway. As he said “once I had made the decision, there's no turning back”.

Now to the other code, op mis cally last weekend (Lions and Suns) was only a glitch in the system, s ll a long season (as with the Broncos) and now we’re talking Origin.

Well cheers for now and to next month. The twins turned 24 in April so between them they’ve caught me already!

Pets become such a big part of your life.

Someone once said women and cats do what they want and men and dogs just have to accept it.

We recently lost one of our loving pets (2 dogs, 1 cat). Now one dog and cat, although it’s an unwri�en rule the cats in charge.

So now the dog has decided it’s too quiet at home and now comes down to the shop for a lot of TLC from everyone.

I can’t find where she is ge�ng out but obviously the pats are worth the pain.

As I men oned in my last le�er, Rainbow is only a small town and generally we all try to get on. It’s a wonder when someone says “do as I say, not as I do” which is unfortunate as it can affect a lot of people.
