We have an editorial on Jess on page 11 and wish her all the best for the next four years.

As the editor of this paper, thank you to so many for helping us put this paper together for May, It has been a challenge, but again shows the depth of goodness in this community.

Congratulations to everyone for making this year’s ANZAC Day so memorable. People of all ages have said they felt it was more personal, more emotional and showed the high esteem the day holds for us all. Well done everyone and thank you to our men and women who protected us then, and do so today.

The community is hurting, but it is also mending, finding the good in what has been a catastrophe for so many business owners in our region, relying as we do on tourism.

And Happy Mother’s Day to all our mums across the region! As the restrictions have been lifted to enjoy a picnic within 50 kilometres of your home, spending a joyful day with family, with beautiful locally sourced food on a picnic rug sounds like heaven. How simple pleasures have returned.

NEW ERA OF general practice has arrived on the Cooloola Coast with Brangan Medical, joined by local private investor Peter Marriott, who have taken ownership of the Cooloola Coast Clinic and Rainbow Beach Medical Practice.

New Practice Director, Tony Brangan, has been involved in the health industry for 37 years, starting in pharmacy before moving into general practice ownership in the last decade.

“Through my work as a pharmacist I was able to gain insight into patients’ needs from a service point of view and have translated these methods of operation into general practice creating an improved experience for patients,” Tony explained.

Initial improvements include installing extra phone lines, reactivation of online bookings and expanding SMS broadcasting for booking confirmations, appointment reminders, non-urgent recall requests and health notices.

The Clinic and Practice are using BetterConsult, a new initiative by PHN that is aimed at doctors being able to provide a greater quality service and enhanced patient experience. The online pre-consultation form is sent via SMS link and details questions that would usually be asked at a visit.

By allowing patients to complete the survey at their own discretion, detailed

considerations and symptoms can be included for the doctor to focus on getting the right treatment.

BetterConsult is private, confidential and secure, is only visible to your doctor or medical provider and is optional for patient use and not an appointment requirement.

Before the practice purchase, Brangan Medical identified the area was grossly underserviced, undertook a study into local metrics, researched the community dynamics and became involved with the Cooloola Coast Health Network.

Tony outlined a vision to “substantiate the Tin Can Bay Clinic, enhance the Rainbow Beach Practice and establish a significant presence at Cooloola Cove.

“Through the purchase of the Cooloola Coast Clinic and Rainbow Beach Medical Practice we are able to immediately establish a patient relationship which will enable successful expansion.”

GP recruitment is a difficult situation, federal law changes last July for doctors working under restriction benefit from our remote status, however potential GP’s are presented with limitations surrounding spousal employment opportunities and education availability.

Tony and wife Sandy have relocated to Tin Can Bay and are developing an attraction strategy that highlights the merits of living on the Cooloola Coast to

hopefully secure long term GPs. Other future plans include an overhaul of the website and online presence, moving to 100% bulk billing for patients

and establishment of a telehealth facility.

For the immediate time though, there will be a focus on navigating the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.

ANZAC DAY 2020

Lest we forget A

NZAC DAY marks the anniversary of the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during the First World War. The Diggers and those serving today would have been humbled to see the outpouring of love this year as families honoured the day in their driveways and their homes.

We might never in our lifetime see Anzac Day celebrated this way again so well done to all for the tributes shown across the region.

Rainbow Beach RSL treasurer, John Molkentien, played the last post, observed a minute’s silence, played the Rouse, then both the Australian and New Zealand national anthems for his neighbours.

Brooke Bignell said: “We were so lost leading up to ANZAC Day, as we always attend the Dawn Service, so we are glad our neighbour John did this.”

IA REIBEL and her mother Rebecca Reibel used some of their home schooling time to learn about the traditions of Anzac Day and make a wreath for the driveway service.

Eight year old Mia is the daughter of Scott and Rebecca Reibel who live at Tin Can Bay. Mia said: “I would have loved to go to the dawn service, but we couldn’t because of covid-19.”

Community Reference Group formed S

IX LOCAL volunteer representatives have been appointed to the Community Reference Group (CRG) for the Tuan Toolara Feral Horse Public Safety Initiative.

Research estimates up to 2,000 feral horses are present in Tuan, Toolara, Neerdie and Bauple State Forests. Approximately 100 horses have been captured along Tin Can Bay and Cooloola Coast Roads by HQPlantations since 2009 and rehomed by the SEQ Brumby Association and Ozecological.

Despite the program, feral horses still cross these busy roads with frequent near misses and a collision requiring hospitalisation occurring as recently as March 25, 2020.

The highly respected community representatives on the CRG come from Poona, Boonooroo, Goomboorian and Tin Can Bay and travel daily on roads where feral horses are frequently seen.

There is a good mix of advocates for feral horses and for public safety, with all representatives concerned for feral horse welfare. One member has rescued a feral

horse previously and another was hospitalised after a collision with a feral horse in the area 10 years ago.

The CRG representatives are Jess Milne, Andy Roberts, Mel D’Or, Keesha Millar, Andrew McCarthy and Jenny Millers. The CRG meets fortnightly by video conference to learn about and discuss issues associated with local feral horse management. Over the coming weeks and months, they will be seeking the opinions of the wider community.

The CRG will share community perspectives with the feral horse management committee, which comprises local land and road managers and owners and other subject matter experts. The committee is drafting a Feral Horse Management Plan for the Tuan Toolara State Forest Areas.

OLLOWING QUERIES regarding the activity opposite the SES shed on Griffin Drive - the street which runs down to the swimming area at Rainbow Beach - we now have an answer.

A Department of Natural Resources, Mines and Energy spokesperson said: “The Department is pleased to report that work is underway to remediate the former mineral sands site at Rainbow Beach.

“The Department has engaged a contractor to safely remove contaminated waste material and dispose of it at the Ipswich Recycling and Refuse Centre.

“A large sieving machine is being used to sieve some of the soil and reduce the amount of waste being disposed of. Locals can expect to see increased truck movement

through Rainbow Beach township in December, with work to be completed before Christmas.

“With the restricted site being off-limits to the public we predict there will be little inconvenience caused to the public.

However, we’d like to thank residents for their understanding while this job is underway, and encourage anyone with questions to call Technical Services Director, Travis Warren on 0459 885 727.

“Following completion of this work, the Department will be planning more remediation activities in the New Year and will be engaging Council, other state departments, and community representatives’ groups where appropriate.”

Kay-Rona keeps the locals entertained

CENES OF ISOLATION antics are being played out on the front lawn of the Raynes residence on the Esplanade in Tin Can Bay. Fibreglass funny woman Kay-Rona has given smiles and laughs to those exercising along the foreshore with her ever changing messages.

She first appeared all dressed up in chic attire with ‘nowhere to go’ but soon got tired of waiting and became ‘bored stiff’ requiring a wheelbarrow bed.

People all over the world have been using their isolation time to explore new skills and Kay-Rona has been no different.

Cracking out a needle and thread she’s stitched up a new outfit and found no excuses not to get in shape by dusting off the bike and kayak.

Unfortunately, she was not actually able to get her leg over the bike and while a sturdy grip on the paddle was a breeze, sitting in the kayak was near impossible as flexibility is not a skill that mannequins possess, so Kay-Rona decided to do the Instagram thing and just pose with them!

The rubbish bin challenge has been doing the rounds on social media and KayRona wanted to outdo, however her constant chattering had her upside-down and legside out in the bin, luckily it wasn’t collection day!

Life can get lonely on the lawn alone so KayRona asked her sister Vyress to safely distance some sibling love.

Who knows what this pair are going to get up to in the weeks ahead!

Quick and Easy Quiche Boats Ingredients: • 1 packet of Old El Paso Stand ‘n’ Stuff Tortillas • 6 eggs • ½ cup of milk • 1 cup of grated cheese (low fat can be used)

• 250g diced bacon (diced ham, shredded chicken or even cooked mince) • 1 medium onion finely chopped • 2 medium carrots grated • 2 tomatoes diced • Salt and pepper just a dash of each Method: 1. Preheat the oven to 180 degrees Celsius.

2. In a frypan over a medium heat sauté onion, bacon until tender.

3. Remove from heat and let cool.

4. In a large bowl whisk together eggs and milk, season with salt and pepper.

5. Add the cheese, carrots, tomatoes and cooled onion and bacon. Stir together.

6. Fill boats on a lined baking tray with egg and vegetable mix (you can sprinkle extra cheese on top if desired).

7. Cook for 25 minutes or until golden brown.

News of the beach access closures were shared with disbelief last month

OTHING SAID ‘Covid-19 is serious’ more than losing access to the beach for 4WD lovers just before the Easter holidays.

When we posted on our Facebook page that the beach access closed on April 3 at 4.54pm, our post reached 79,668 people with 8000 engagements, 58 comments and 102 shares - it was met with absolute disbelief.

How could there be an Easter with no 4WD-ing on the magnificent Cooloola Coast, no camping at Teewah Beach and no surfing at Double Island Point?

It was unheard of and the Easter break is the busiest mini break of the year in the Gympie Region with people travelling for miles to set up tents or visit holiday homes for a week of R & R.

We are thrilled to report that once the shock was over and people knew it was a non-negotiable situation, nearly everyone did the right thing and everyone accepted it.

It seems like a long time ago when the word Coronavirus was first used and the horror it created, but now, a mere month later, people have learnt to stay at home and have learnt a thing or two about themselves.

There have been business casualties with so many having to close temporarily while others are changing their operations to suit.

But, we are here and waiting for when restrictions are lifted to welcome everyone back to this incredible place we call home.

AREE VAN OIRSHOT owned Rainbow Beach Houseboats from the early 2000s and raised her children Terry, Annie and Josey here and son Terry still lives here.

She was one of the major organisers for the annual breast cancer awareness pink luncheons, which raised thousands of dollars for breast cancer awareness over six years.

Maree has had a tumultuous year and we thought you would like to wish her all the best so we asked her if we could share her story.

A year ago I visited my GP after getting a fever and what I thought might have been haemorrhoids and within the week I managed to see a Colorectal Doctor and an MRI and CT scan plus a colonoscopy.

The shocking news was I had Adenocarcinoma T4 N0 M1. Bowel cancer with a 9cm tumour and lymph nodes compromised but I had no other cancer anywhere else.

Within four weeks I commenced chemotherapy.

During this time I learnt that time, once thought of as your enemy, becomes a time

to rest, heal and recover.

I am so grateful for my family and friends who unconditionally supported me during this time. It certainly had highs and lows.

I needed more surgery so on February 11th, I had a 14 hour procedure with many teams during the day carefully removing my cancer.

I had to learn to walk, go up steps, gather my balance and generally regain mobility. It was a huge surgery and it took its toll on me.

Fast forward a year from my diagnosis and the surgeon has given me good news, they were successful in removing the cancer and my lymph nodes are all clear.

Become more in tune with your body everyday. Consider your environment and exposure to the sun, chemicals and technology. Consider your intake and consumption of food and drink. There are always better choices.

But I think the best medicine is to find joy and laughter, do things that fill up that cup we often talk about.

Life is certainly short once you’ve been dealt the cancer card. So live a good life. Love your family and get out in nature.

Turtle survival success after cliff rescue

ATURE DOESN’T stop for lockdown and neither does caring for the sea turtle nests on Rainbow Beach.

Everyone in Rainbow Beach is getting out when they can for exercise; and expanses of beautiful, sandy beach are the perfect place for the locals to get their exercise. There’s plenty of room to practise physical distancing.

A small team of Cooloola Coastcare’s dedicated TurtleCare volunteers complete another mission while taking their daily walks. When they head out for walks at various times of the day and night, they check every nest looking for any signs of hatchlings.

Jan Waters, Steve and Rosie Douglas, Murray Sambell and Joan Burnett have coordinated their monitoring efforts to monitor and protect the nests.

The nest of a green turtle, “Bess”, became exposed when the cyclone passed offshore. Team members rescued the eggs from the erosion and dug a new nest higher up the dune and carefully relocated the

eggs. Then followed the nervous wait to see if these babies had survived the storm and the relocation.

Teased by a single hatchling appearing from the nest on each of two nights, the TurtleCarers knew it couldn’t be long until they all ran. So they stood vigil but no more action. They continued more regular observations for the next 4 days.

Of course, the hatchlings managed to “run” in between visits by their babysitters at 1am and 4am and the TurtleCarers were rewarded with the sight of lots of little flipper prints leading to the sea.

Joan Burnett dug the hatched nest and the count of eggshells showed that 116 of the 124 relocated eggs had hatched safely and 110 had made it to the sea.

Six of the little hatchlings were trapped in the nest so, these were carefully taken close to the water and allowed to enter the sea, imprinting this location as their home. A fantastic result for these little guys who were nearly lost only weeks before.

Where’s the stairs?

Thanks to the eagle eyes of some trusty locals, Cherie Mason and Sue Fitzgerald, we have photos to show the council removing the stairs earlier in the month.

A spokesperson from the Gympie Regional Council said: “Providing beach access stairs at the southern end of Phil Rogers Park has been attempted over the last twenty years with the most recent closed for safety reasons since early 2016 and, due to the instability of the rock footings and wave impact, the decision was made to not reinstate them.

“A demolition crew is now in the process

of removing the existing fibre composite stairs and the remaining sections of the previous timber platform. Council will be planting native plant species in the areas after the removal occurs.

“Visitors to Rainbow Beach and Phil Rogers Park can enjoy the recently constructed viewing platform.

“The viewing platform was entirely funded by the Queensland Government and provides an opportunity for residents and visitors to take in the beautiful Coloured Sands.”

OSPITALITY IS always a stressful industry, staff are under pressure and the standards of safety and hygiene are always high under normal conditions.

Local chef and co-owner of Rainbow Beach Pizza and Grill with his wife Elisa, Sean Seul said: “Now we are constantly cleaning the invisible virus on high traffic areas where it could sit and it has been challenging.

“It’s unfortunate but there is a positive. People in this industry are going to be more aware of cleaning and hand hygiene which is extremely important.”

Currently the loss of income has impacted everyone and businesses are having to adapt to survive.

Sean said: “Rent hibernation is next to none for most of us. Although payments have been deferred, in the long term there is no help at all.

My advice if you can keep paying do so, as you may be digging a deeper hole.”

With restrictions in place for the here and now, Sean is thinking ahead.

“The major wholesale food companies have also taken a major loss as many of their customers have closed owing outstanding amounts.

“Suppliers have reduced their staff and stock levels, so when Australia gets the green light for ‘dine in’ again, those restaurants that have made it through will require an opening order of stock that will not be able to be filled at once due to the loss of imports.

“Food costs will rise therefore menu items will also rise as inflation hits.”

Reduced trading is giving us the chance to spend time differently.

Sean said: “Make the most of it, enjoy dinner with family and a normal life, hospitality crew!”

ESS MILNE has been declared our new Division 1 Councillor for 2020-2024 with 50.26 percent of the vote or 1425 votes.

Jess defeated incumbent Mark McDonald by just 15 votes with 3545 voters casting their vote of the 4,987 enrolments in the division.

Jess recently turned 40 and has lived with partner Harley and two daughters, Bonnie and Jackie, in Tin Can Bay since 2015.

She first became involved with the community in 2013 through a work contract and fell in love with the people, laid-back lifestyle and serenity, and moved to Tin Can Bay permanently.

I had a chat with Jess to find out what her plans are and how we can catch up with her with concerns or ideas.

Asked why she ran, Jess said: “I first became concerned about communication within the council during my years contracted to provide services to Gympie Regional Council. This concern sparked an interest in local government, so I began a journey of self development to gain understanding and skills to be able to fulfil the role of a councillor.

“Having a diverse understanding of community needs and interests enables comprehensive representation. I became involved with numerous groups over time as opportunities to join arose. Providing service to the community gives me joy so this reinforced my drive to work hard and run for council.”

What do you want to achieve in the next four years?

“Activating existing plans by sourcing funding and ensuring any new planning is thorough and inclusive. There are some

great things already outlined such as offleash dog parks, improved youth facilities, birdwatching infrastructure, Rainbow Beach town centre upgrade and oval redevelopment.

“Tourism is the main economic driver on the Cooloola Coast so implementing the Cooloola Coast elements of the Gympie Region Tourism Strategy is vital to keeping our community alive. Aged care and associated health support are potential growth areas that also need support. “

What are your priorities?

“The highest priority is to navigate the Covid-19 crisis and work through future issues stemming from the economic devastation. Prudent budgeting and ensuring financial security are fundamental to our future. Finding balance between economic stimulus and residential support.”

What do locals do if they want something done?

“The best way is to register a concern to Gympie Regional Council using the online Customer Request form on the council website. This ensures that the issue is logged with the appropriate department and it must be actioned. Please include that you would like your Division Councillor to be included in responses.

“I am happy to discuss any concerns or issues that residents have and can assist with completing a Customer Request if needed. Legislation prohibits a councillor from giving council staff direction, therefore I can follow up issues but can’t instruct staff to ‘go fix a pothole’.

WYATT EARP

The little ship with many names T

HE NATONE SHIPWRECK is part of Rainbow Beach’s history. Lee McCarthy talks to Trish Burgess who has written about this world travelling ship.

Inspired by celebrations in Hobart last year to mark 100 years since Wyatt Earp was built and 60 years since she was wrecked on Mudlo Rocks near Rainbow Beach, Trish Burgess decided to find out more about her history.

Trish’s book, Wyatt Earp: The little ship with many names, will be released by publisher Connor Court in mid May. Trish said “This book brings together the whole story of Wyatt Earp’s many lives: her 1919 launch as M/S Fanefjord in Norway, through her four Wyatt Earp Antarctic voyages with American Lincoln Ellsworth and Australian Sir Hubert Wilkins; her time with the Australian Government and service as HMAS Wyatt Earp on the first Australian National

Antarctic Research Expedition (ANARE) voyage.

“Finally as Wongala and then Natone it tells of her work around the Australian coast and her grounding and final resting place on Rainbow Beach in 1959.”

Growing up in a family with lots of Antarctic links meant Trish heard many stories about the men and the ships of the icy South. Her grandfather was manager of Williamstown Dockyard in Melbourne, from 1928 to 1938.

Royal Australian Navy hydrographers used offices in the manager’s house when surveying in Port Phillip Bay, and Karl Oom, who sailed with Sir Douglas Mawson and later became Captain of HMAS Wyatt Earp, was one of these and a family friend.

Discovery II spent time in Williamstown before and after the rescue of Lincoln Ellsworth in the Ross Sea. Trish has made four trips, on small expedition ships, to

the Antarctic - two from Ushuaia, to the Antarctic Peninsula and South Georgia, and two to the Ross Sea from New Zealand and Australia.

Trish said that she already had an interest in Antarctic history and research and so it seemed a good idea to find out more about Wyatt Earp.

“There are plenty of accounts of various parts of Wyatt Earp’s life but nothing that brings them all together and that was my aim.

“She had an amazing life, sailing through some of the roughest and coldest seas in the world but ending up on a Queensland beach!”

Bushfire appeal artwork complete T

HE BUSHFIRE APPEAL Community Artwork is complete, and has raised $200. The community of Cooloola - Rainbow Beach, Goomboorian and Tin Can Bay have worked with extreme talent.

The five panels tell the story of the bushfires in Australia during 2019 and 2020. Local children, teenagers, adults and backpackers have all had fun working on this artwork project.

Painting 1 depicts the Australian bush before the fires, with the people, flora and fauna normal.

Painting 2 depicts the beginning of the fires, the smoke and small grass fires.

Painting 3 depicts the intense fire, with all life trying to flee.

Painting 4 depicts the blackened scene after the fire.

Painting 5 depicts the regeneration after the fire, with people, flora and fauna returning to normality.

Ann Olive, who has coordinated this artwork, is looking for an appropriate setting for hanging this artwork. ANY THINGS have been happening since last month due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

The Dolphin Centre as you probably know was closed to the public in late March. Such a shame that the holiday makers who would have been on the Cooloola Coast during the Easter break and school holidays didn’t get a chance to see or feed a wild dolphin.

The volunteers are in attendance each day to check on the welfare of the dolphins and to give them a small proportion of their usual feed. This is to convey to them that we care and love them.

Of course we want them to keep visiting as this is the best thing Tin Can Bay has to offer, feeding and seeing wild dolphins.

O QUOTE John Lennon: ‘nobody told me there’d be days like these’. The song easily comes to mind when contemplating our current predicament.

The unfortunate thing is – while the challenge of COVID-19 is bringing out the best in some people, it is also bringing out the worst in others…

Many of you would be aware of the spike in crime last month. Three premises were broken into - with thieves stealing two cars, two jet skis, one boat and

one motorbike.

Arrests have been made – and most of the property recovered – but I am conveying this information to warn of the possibility of an increase in crime in the near future.

Obviously, having to put up with criminal activity is the last thing any of us need at a time like this. But the reality is – as last month showed us – criminals are only going to get more desperate. These criminals don’t take health advice in regards to meth

- and are even less likely to ‘stay at home’ to help the rest of us with a pandemic.

Now is the time to take a few extra security precautions: lock your cars and homes and secure the keys. Don’t be alarmed – but do be alert.

If you see any suspicious activities or vehicles please record rego numbers or even take photos if safe to do so.

Anything urgent can be communicated via 000 (even if we are not on shift we are always on call).

Y, HOW THE world has changed in just a few short weeks! While many clubs have seen their activities come to a grinding halt, photography and the activities of the Tin Can Bay Camera Club are able to continue virtually full steam ahead. How can we do this?

Photography, by its very nature in the modern world, is largely digital. So we have transferred most of our activities online.

Our club print competitions have been converted to digital competitions with online viewing and judging through the club’s website.

We are also utilising our (sorry, secret) Facebook group to conduct our monthly critique/feedback sessions, and our regular photo shoots have been replaced with weekly photo challenges that members can do around their home. These are proving very popular with members and we are seeing some wonderful images submitted.

The only thing that has fallen by the wayside is our monthly Photoshop workshops. Due to the hands-on nature of these help sessions, they have proven too difficult to convert to the online world for our members.

In the meantime, we will keep on snapping!

IKE ALL OTHER businesses, we have slowed to a crawl due to restrictions with Covid-19.

Firstly a big thank you to all the shops that were collecting for us, until I pulled most of the tins out as I didn’t think it fair to accept donations in the current economic climate.

The same with the IGAs, thank you for all your collecting until we stopped.

We can still accept non-perishable goods at our house or shed if anyone still wants to donate. The Bank of Queensland in Mary Street, Gympie, will also accept any money donations.

We will continue to send funds in the form of vouchers to Centacare Longreach, the Corryong fire area, and we are even helping local people in need at present.

So to everyone that donated to our collection points, a BIG thank you!

For large donations received, many thanks to Wayne Kerle in Tin Can Bay, The Metcash Community Chest through our IGA, The Surf Club for bottle collections and the Shell Servo for a wonderful donation of oil to the farmers.

Many areas of the country have now had wonderful rains, but the drought doesn’t just stop. It will be years before most farmers put money in the bank.

Many cannot afford stock and a lot will have to sell or walk. I do know of two farming families that have holidayed here in March and when the lockdown is over you will see many more from out west.

We have sent nearly half a million dollars in aid out west and I am sure Western Queensland families will start holidaying here again.

ELL, JUST WHEN we thought we had won. The Tin Can Bay Community and Men’s Shed has been forced to close down until current restrictions have been lifted.

It was officially opened on March 12, and officially closed on March 17.

But it won’t stop the Shedders from communicating and looking after each other, just not “shoulder to shoulder”.

We are continuing the ‘containers for cash’ collections. There is a bin located at the front of the Shed for drop-offs, and volunteers are working behind closed doors, one at a time, to sort and bag.

Plenty of gloves and sanitiser on hand (pun intended).

General Meeting on March 14. The new President, Robert Jones, thanked members for their support, and promised that the coming year would see the Shed develop into a facility that the Cooloola Coast could be proud of.

The Shed has a number of projects on hand involving repairs to furniture and similar household items. This type of service is available to the general public as well as Shed members.

The Shed will pick up where it left off as soon as we are able, with planned classes on knots and splicing, computer and internet training, and scroll saw operation.

We are down but not out.

IN A SHARE in over $13,000 in prizes from the Gympie Regional Gallery’s national art competition, the Du Rietz Art Awards.

The Du Rietz Art Awards are open to artists of all experience levels and entrants can enter twodimensional and three-dimensional artworks, which are eligible for seven different awards.

There are five sub awards with a total value of $1,945. These include the Roy Skinner Memorial Works on Paper Award, the Bryan Moore Memorial Ceramic Award, the Ceramic Encouragement Award, the Locals Encouragement Award and People’s Choice Award.

Entries close on Friday June 12 at 4pm.

Award presentations will take place on Wednesday August 5 at 7pm.

Boating in unusual times N

OBODY IN AUSTRALIA is untouched by the restrictions on movement that have been applied to slow the infection rate of Covid-19. Boat owners have also been advised that there are only very limited reasons why they can use their recreational vessels, and while all our local boat ramps remain open, signs have been erected to clearly state the rules.

Over the Easter weekend, Fisheries Officers appeared over several days, checking the registrations of cars and trailers, and in some cases, issuing warnings about going out for the wrong reason. In addition, from March 31 to May 29 a 100 metre exclusion zone has been placed around Fraser Island.

On Easter Sunday, the Water Police also cruised through the area, moving boats moored within the exclusion zone, and taking details of yachts in the area.

Obviously, our local boaties are not easily

deterred, as numbers in the trailer parking zones were only slightly down on previous Easter weekends. Fortunately for the Coast Guard, it was an uneventful holiday period for us, and we were not called out to rescue any vessels.

Although our base is currently closed for public access, we are still operating, and the base is manned from 0600 hours to 1800 hours daily, every day of the year. You can still contact us by radio on Ch 80 or phone on 5486 4290.

You can still pay your Marine Assist Membership over the phone or get information about weather and Wide Bay Bar conditions. Like us on Facebook, we often post helpful information there.

While we no longer have a crew present on the weekends, it is to keep our volunteers safe so that we can have crews on call at short notice, should we need to assist anyone in distress.

RSL working to ensure veterans coping

O

VER THE LAST few weeks our wellbeing officers have been very busy in regards to ensuring our elderly veterans are coping at home with isolation and also the shortage of several grocery items.

We are aware of the isolation felt by many of our veterans and also members of the community with lack of transport and family members - with this in mind we have been in constant contact with the veterans

Tin Can Bay RSL volunteers have been busy sewing non-surgical masks and giving them out to veterans and community members in need

and if required sourcing grocery items for them.

Thank you to June, Michelle and Terry for delivering our Easter Care Packages (especially Michelle who turned up with her cute Bunny Ears). Thank you also to our benefactor who paid for all of those packages.

Another of our volunteers has also been very busy sewing non-surgical masks. The Wellbeing Team has been giving these out to our veterans and community members in need.

Non-surgical scrub caps are also in high demand by nurses all over Australia at this time. Members of wonderful groups such as ‘Helping our Hospitals Heroes’, ‘Sewing for Charity’ and ‘Sewing Scrub Caps’ have made and distributed thousands of scrub caps so far.

In regards to ANZAC Day: unfortunately we are not holding our usual service. We have provided a wreath to one member who has expressed his intention to stand outside his home on the day to remember their sacrifices.

Currently we have several members receiving Palliative Care and some recovering from the flu. If you have been advised that your injection has arrived and cannot make your appointment because of transport problems, please let us know so we can (within current restrictions) take you for your shot. Very important for our vulnerable members.

NFORTUNATELY, Cooloola City Farm is closed for an indefinite period during the Coronavirus pandemic.

We will however, continue our series on attracting animals to your garden. This month, our topic is frogs.

Providing native plants of various sizes and conformation, mulch, rocks and water will make your environment attractive for frogs.

Plants attract insects and provide a place to rest and shelter from wind, sun and predators. Frogs are natural controllers of insect pests. They also eat mosquito larvae.

A pond is the best way to attract frogs to your garden. Place the pond out of direct sunlight. Have grasses, sedges, reeds, ferns and ground covers around the pond and aquatic plants in the pond, as these provide protection and tadpoles will eat the decaying matter from the fallen leaves.

Ensure there are ways for the emerging frogs to get in and out of the water.

It is important to keep the water free from any chemicals. Frogs can coexist with some native species of fish, but many fish will eat spawn and tadpoles.

It is best not to handle frogs as their skin is very sensitive and vital to their ability to breathe and absorb moisture. Avoid putting the pond near bedrooms - your own or those of your neighbour - as the noise in wet times can be overwhelming!

A drawback to ponds is the cane toad, which is a major threat to frogs and native wildlife.

Ensure your pond does not become a home for cane toads by removing any toad eggs. These are black and are in long strands while those of frogs are a clump of jelly or foamy mass.

BreastScreen Queensland has temporarily suspended routine breast screening due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

We understand the concerns about our service change. This was a difficult but necessary decision to safeguard the health of our clients, staff, and community.

All women with appointments will be notified directly. We will contact clients to reschedule appointments as soon as possible.

Please be assured that if you have recently had a breast screen you will receive your results as normal, through the post or your online account. BreastScreen Queensland remains open for those women who have been asked to return for additional tests.

Women are encouraged to remain aware of the normal look and feel of their breasts. If you notice any changes please contact your doctor immediately, do not wait until your next breast screen.

Breast changes to look out for include: • a new lump or lumpiness, especially if it’s only in one breast • a change in the size and shape of your breast

• a discharge from your nipple that happens without squeezing the nipple • a change in the skin of the breast such as redness or dimpling or puckered skin • a pain that doesn’t go away.

This is a rapidly changing situation and we will keep you updated via our website (www.breastscreen. qld.gov.au) about when breast screening services will be available again.

We want to reassure the community that the closure is not due to a suspected or confirmed case of COVID-19 at any of our clinics.

The staff have been working tirelessly to try and provide a combination of paper-based and online learning material. It has been a challenging time that has seen all of us on a steep learning curve.

We encourage all of our families to do their best at this time and reach out if they need some help. With any luck we will soon have our students returning through our gates and we look forward to getting back to regular routines.

Coloured Sands Starting below the lookout, walk along the beach towards Double Island Point for a kilometre or so to these amazing Coloured sand cliffs, with the best colours around 9 to 10 kilometres along the beach (accessible with a 4wd or Surf and Sand Safari tour) 5486 3131.

Carlo Sand Blow A bush walk up to Carlo Sand Blow is a must for every visitor. Drive to the reservoir at the top of Cooloola Drive. The Blow is an easy 600m walk from the car park or take the longer walk from the National Parks Office. Spectacular views of the Coloured Sands, Double Island Point and Tin Can Bay Inlet are the bonus for your efforts. When the thermals are right, you will often see Hang Gliders taking off and landing at this beautiful piece of Nature’s Sculpture.

Lake Poona After morning tea or lunch in the picnic area you can venture on some wonderful walks to Lake Poona or through some spectacular Rainforest. Allow 40 minutes to reach Lake Poona.

Lake Freshwater Only accessible by 4WD, Tour or Walking. Walking tracks starts at the Bymien picnic area. The round trip from Rainbow Beach will take a full day and requires fitness.

Foreshore Tin Can Bay You can walk 4km from Crabs Creek to Norman Point, over picturesque bridges, signage of flora and fauna, through mangroves, playgrounds and outdoor gyms. It is mostly flat – very safe for children on wheels. Start at the playground opposite the library, cycle to Crabs Creek and stop for a coffee, then return to opposite the library. Enjoy the views out to the inlet while the kids enjoy the playground and skatepark.

AINTER TYLER BAINES finished his work painting the roof on a double block of units at Rainbow and headed to the water.

He loves to go fishing when he finishes for the day and last week he snagged the big one.

A 110cm Barramundi!

He couldn’t believe he got it in. It had a large stainless hook with a meter of leader trailing from his mouth from somebody’s failed attempt.

Tyler tried to return it but it wouldn’t swim, so he kept it only after attempts to set it free failed.

ELL, IT’S CRAZY times alright and unfortunately we had to make the decision to close charters to prevent people coming to Rainbow and being a potential risk.

It wasn’t long after the restrictions were brought in which would have forced it anyway.

We managed to get a couple of trips in beforehand and the fishing was exceptional with some great quality Spangled Emperor, Pearl perch, reds and snapper.

Also no shortage of big parrot and husser around with the odd trout amongst them.

Mackerel and tuna have been hit and miss, but are quite thick when around.

Along the beaches some great gutters are forming again which have been producing some cracker whiting along with dart and bream.

The odd flathead has been landed from these gutters as well. It looks like this will be the last report for a while unless I get out for a quiet fish.

HOOSING THE RIGHT bait when you go fishing can play a vital role in protecting our waterways from exotic diseases that could wreak havoc with our local industries.

People planning to go fishing when the restrictions are lifted are asked to choose their bait carefully and even better - ‘shop local’ as Rainbow Beach and Tin Can Bay have great businesses selling quality bait.

Using supermarket prawns as bait could introduce diseases, such as White Spot disease, into our waterways.

While most people are already aware of this, there are others who may not realise the risk, which is why it’s important to pass this message on - use the right bait.

At Rainbow Beach you can access quality bait at: Rainbow Beach Camping and Fishing on Clarkson Drive; Rainbow Beach Hardware on Rainbow Beach Road and Gardiners Fisheries on Karoonda Street and in Tin Can Bay go to The Chandlery on Emperor Street, Tin Can Bay.

HESE ARE difficult times, and the recent announcements from the Prime Minister and Chief Medical Officer have led the Executive Committee to announce the suspension of all Tin Can Bay Fishing Club activities, meetings and social gatherings.

The annual and monthly competitions have also been suspended.

We should, however, do our best to keep life as normal as possible, whilst maintaining faithfully, the Federal and State Government’s social mandates and recommendations.

This pandemic is serious, and we trust all will take the government’s message seriously, (regardless of your political views) about social distancing.

Sensible behaviour must be the order of the day, although some still do not get

it. Hoarding and panic buying is just NOT sensible, and is in fact damaging to the vulnerable in your community. Let’s be sensible and look out for our friends and community.

Several locals, plus Fishing Club members, joined forces for Clean-Up Australia Day 2020. The clean-up was undertaken along the foreshore from Norman Point to Crab Creek, plus the main road down beyond Rifle Range Road to the Tin Can Bay Road, Cooloola Cove turnoff.

It resulted in a wide range of items being collected, taking up one well loaded highsided trailer. plus one well stacked ute. Items included several folding chairs in the bush around the Crab Creek area plus a badly damaged fibreglass dinghy.

anyone can remember in relation to the actual volume of rubbish collected. There was a lot less rubbish evident than collected in previous years although it is obvious that there are still a few grubs around.

It would also be great if our Division 1 Councillor could arrange for several community service persons to do a roadside clean-up prior to the slashers going through, as the slashing of roadside rubbish makes the problem 10 times worse.

A Little Humour SENIORS ONLY I was on a long line at 7.45am today at Woolies as it opened at 8am for seniors only. A young man came from the parking lot and tried to cut in at the front of the line, but an old lady beat him back into the parking lot with her cane.

He returned and tried to cut in again but an old man punched him in the gut, then kicked him to the ground and rolled him away.

As he approached the line for the third time he said: “If you don’t let me unlock the door, you’ll never get in there.”

PRAYER Murphy is staggering home from the pub late one night with a flask of Scotch in his hip pocket. He slips over on the rain sodden footpath, falling on his backside and breaking the bottle.

As he staggers to his feet and feels the Scotch trickling down his leg, he looks up to the heavens and say, ‘Oh God, please tell me that’s blood!’.

RENTING A lawyer, who had a wife and 12 children, needed to move because his rental agreement was terminated by the owner, who wanted to reoccupy the home. Man: I’m aware of that, but Karen has a wonderful personality.

Boy complains to his father: You told me to put a potato in my swimming trunks!

Messing about in boats “Believe me, my young friend, there is nothing — absolutely nothing — half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats. Simply messing... about in boats — or with boats.”

AT (from The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame) is right, there is nothing as good as messing about in boats and having fun on the water. It doesn’t matter whether you are a beginner or an experienced sailor, enjoying yourself on the waters of Tin Can Bay is what matters.

At the Yacht Club you can have a casual sail, take a day cruise, anchor, swim and have a picnic or have a longer cruise in the Sandy Straits. If you want a bit of competition, you may wish to join in the Sunday races.

Don’t know how to sail? Maybe you would like to come along and have a try. If you decide you would like to learn more, courses can be arranged to suit individual needs.

For juniors, sailing courses are run in the school holidays for those (aged 6-16 years) who would like to learn to sail. The emphasis is on having fun and being safe on the water. Oh, and learning to sail, of course.

There is not only sailing at the Yacht Club, Dragon Boat paddling and Sailability are affiliated clubs.

Perhaps you’d just like to sit and relax on the deck and watch the activities without ever getting your feet wet, social membership is available.

UST LIKE ALL sports and clubs the world over, the effects of the Coronavirus restrictions have been felt on our sport of Dragon Boating.

But our members are very confident that our dragon boat will be seen once again out on Snapper Creek soon, and when restrictions allow, we will be back on the water.

In the meantime, our members still meet regularly via video chat, phone calls and social media to keep in touch and check on each member’s welfare.

Each member is undertaking individual physical exercise programs to maintain fitness levels.

Last month our No1 fan and strongest supporter, Jean Barnett, had her 94th birthday. Because of her vulnerability to the Coronavirus at 94, her birthday celebrations were low key this year, compared to the birthday dinner at the TCB Country Club for her 93rd last year.

Our Dragon Lair Cafe activities at the TCB Markets will be suspended while the markets are restricted to food only.

We will return to full Dragon Lair Cafe service when restrictions are lifted.

Hello again to all in Rainbow Beach land as the Covid19 pandemic (hopefully) slows and life goes back to what we deem as “normal”.

Computers and typing for me is a necessity not an enjoyment, I'm sure it's ruined my sight (nothing to do with age). Throw me a footy any day.

It certainly is a different world to this me last month, let alone last year. Living in a country like ours, we are unique and that certainly, I believe, has helped us.

Speaking of which we may have a season soon hallelujah. I did watch an e-sports (ar ficial racing on a playsta on) race of Bathurst. I was actually surprised how good it was (but when I found out the console cost over 100k it counts me out). The racing was very close, well, it wasn't racing but e-racing. I know my problem is that I enjoy the outdoors too much.

Well, not much more to say apart from by the me you read this the beaches might be open (can't wait to go for a drive down the beach), camping will soon be in full swing and the kids will be allowed back at school, I suppose I can only dream?

With Mother's Day approaching it's always good to check in with the family, even though at this stage it might be hard to go and see them. With all the new technology available I never thought I would see the elderly embracing it as much as they are.

I grew up in the noncomputerised era and learned to type on an old typewriter. I may have got to 20 words a minute (doubt it) but the boys do say I really hit the keys hard.
