HE LAST WEEKS of autumn will be a walking month for me, I’ve just this minute, signed up for The May 50K. I’ll be walking at least 50K this month which is probably close to what I normally do, but…

Locals have another long weekend, thanks to the Gympie Show. Forage hosts a smorgasbord of foodie fun, and I’m looking forward to checking out some farms, the Goomeri Pumpkin Festival or a long lunch!

The mums involved have planned a 15km walk to Inskip Point on May 16.

‘The Sandy Soles of Rainbow’ have raised $2671 so far, if you’d like to donate to the group for multiple sclerosis, themay50k.org is the place to visit.

I have handpicked a full page of ‘Creative Cuts’ - events for artists, bookworms and music lovers, plus wrap up coastal Under 5 activities to keep mums (as well as dads and carers) happy.

So, I’ll be training! No doubt with lots of calorie burn and laughs along the way.

I know I say it a lot, but we are lucky to live in this walker’s paradise. It is a delight, and no surprise we were nominated as a Tourist Top Town.

Plus I am sure I wasn’t the only one this year, who simply appreciated that public commemoration of ANZAC Day was an option in 2021. Well done to our RSL Sub Branches for their touching services.

This month there are a whole lot of events happening - the Bay to Bay, Cooloola Farm Trail, Rosella Festival and Warbirds was on the long weekend, with a Volunteer Expo, cultural awareness training and a kids’ fishing clinic coming up - they learn to catch live bait!

We’re so sorry to hear the stresses families are going through finding somewhere to live on the Cooloola Coast.

Our housing article investigates some of the strategies to make more houses available for people to live and work here.

I’m thinking, too, of all the mums and family members missing each other, or where May 9 could be a day of sorrow and memories.

To my dearest mum, Pat and ‘bestest’ mother-in-law, Judy - you are loved. You are two dynamos who inspire your family every day. To all mums and mother figures, Happy Mother’s Day!

Council intervention urged to ease housing crisis H

OUSING WAS DISCUSSED at last month’s Rainbow Beach Commerce and Tourism (RBCT) meeting, with more questions raised than answers.

There are no permanent rental properties available. Businesses can’t fill job positions, because there is nowhere for new employees to live. Now, even employers are struggling to find a home.

It was of great concern that RBCT Treasurer, Andrew Kingsley, had until May 12 to find rental accommodation.

Andrew, owner of Rainbow Beach Fruit, said, “We’re stressed, we’ve got four kids, and it’s the unknown. We can’t find anywhere to live - it is difficult. I’ve got to keep the business.”

If Andrew and wife Annie have no alternative but to move to Gympie, pickings are slim. “Out of seven real estate agents, there were two houses for us. With 15 people applying for one. We have to wait and see.”

He said real estate agents in Rainbow Beach only have small units, which is not ideal for four teenagers!

“They’re doing everything they can, trying to get holiday lets into permanent rentals.

You understand why homeowners are holiday renting, you make better money out of it,” said Andrew.

The RBCT executive have been in discussion with the Chamber of Commerce Institute of Queensland regarding private AirBnB accommodation, and urge council to adopt initiatives from Noosa and Byron Bay. The town cannot house enough workers to service tourists.

because there is no accommodation - school numbers have decreased. Lack of housing is eroding our community. The situation is unsustainable.

After the Queensland government deferred its plans for a state-wide framework to manage short-stay letting, Noosa Council has proposed a new local law. It opened for comment April 9, with submissions by May 14, and includes: • Code of conduct for guest behaviour e.g. noise, light spill, vehicle storage, pets, waste, etc.

• Minimum safety standards for guests • Regulate ongoing operation of short stay letting and home hosted accommodation • One-off application and annual renewal for a premises • Exemptions for visitor only areas: hotels, motels, backpacker accommodation, etc. and • Local contact person to manage a short stay let premises, inform guests of the code of conduct, be available 24/7, be located within 20 minutes travel, respond to complaints within 30 minutes and keep a register of complaints.

Last month, NSW Government announced a policy with new definitions of accommodation, and provisions like fire safety standards for dwellings, penalties and tracking the day limits. This will take effect November 1, 2021.

They acknowledge that Short Term Rental Accommodation (STRA) is often facilitated through online booking platforms such as Stayz, Airbnb and Booking.com.

RBCT members discussed a critical point: if holiday home owners swap management from online platforms to real estate agents, there will still be a housing shortage.

do we know any of it will be available for permanent rent?

In 2011, Byron Shire in NSW gave incentives to encourage more housing; and worked with the community to ensure housing is provided to permanent residents.

Council decided to exempt certain secondary dwellings from development contributions. However, the exemption was only for dwellings which provided a home for permanent residents and consents were conditioned to restrict tourist and visitor accommodation.

They recognised that in addition to complaints about holiday letting, an important impact is housing affordability and stock, because houses are purchased for holiday letting alone, decreasing rental availability.

Byron Shire also restricts ‘tourist and visitor accommodation’ to certain zones, and has prohibited it in residential areas.

More recently, Byron Council resolved to enforce action on owners who use their property for tourism purposes, acting outside their development consent.

In the Gympie Region, Council cannot control housing prices, but perhaps some of the learnings and policies from other holiday hot spots like Noosa and Byron Bay could assist locals.

Andrew agrees, “I’d like to see Council put a cap on AirBnB and holiday rentals. I don’t know if it would help - but the only solution is through the government or council.”

Secretary of the Tin Can Bay Lions Club, Ilse Storrie, invites you to a morning tea at Cathy House, 44 Toolara Street, Tin Can Bay on Friday May 7 called Honouring Mums.

What’s on each week for Under 5s?

HIS IS A question we see a lot at the Community News. If you have a group on the Cooloola Coast that can help lighten the load for mums, dads and caregivers with a regular network or group, please let us know.

Mondays First Five Forever Storytime is at now 10.30am on Mondays at Rainbow Beach Library, combining all ages under 5 and their parents/caregiver at Rainbow Beach Library.

This is an interactive program with a focus on fun. Bookings are essential: 5486 3705

Tuesdays and Wednesdays Amanda Schier and son Beau have a cuddle at First Five Forever, Rainbow Beach Library

KindyLinQ is an early learning program for three- and four-year-old children who attend with a parent/caregiver.

Rainbow Beach is one of the fortunate schools across Queensland to host KindyLinQ - it’s on every Tuesday and Wednesday during school terms, from 9am to 11am.

The free sessions are for parents/caregivers to attend with their child and engage in play activities together.

It is not compulsory, you attend when you like, and aims to support children’s learning, development and engagement prior to starting school.

Please bring a hat, water bottle and midmorning snack.

Rainbow Beach Playgroup is a friendly group of littlies, mothers, fathers, grandparents and carers who welcome everyone to play, laugh, read and sing.

In your child’s early years, playgroup is an ideal introduction to learning through play and it’s a great opportunity for you to meet other parents, socialise and make friends with like-minded people.

Playgroup provides a relaxed introduction to the school, allowing the children to feel comfortable and familiar with the environment.

Rainbow Beach playgroup meet from 8.30am until about 10.30am on Thursdays at the Rainbow Beach State School library.

First 5 Forever Storytime at Tin Can Bay Library is on 9.30 to 10am every Thursday.

The group loves to catch up outdoors - and provides a relaxed atmosphere with a focus on fun for children up to five years of age and their caregivers. Bookings are essential: 5486 4355

What about Tin Can Bay Playgroup?

Tin Can Bay has a wonderful playgroup building on the corner of Bream and Emperor Streets.

For years, the group has met on Tuesday mornings, with a $2 per visit - at the moment they are closed until a Playgroup Coordinator volunteers.

As parents help pack it up and clean up afterwards, and there are no formal or prepared activities, this role simply involves opening and closing the building, plus greeting parents.

This fun, casual-based playgroup has a great fenced outdoor area, and play equipment, too. Parents can connect with others and children can play safely.

Rainbow Beach is a Top Small Tourism Town Awards finalist!

AINBOW BEACH was nominated for a new QTIC’s Tourism Award that recognise and reward towns with an amazing visitor experience, who collaborate and are committed to encourage tourism and increased visitation.

How many other towns with a population of 1100 have driven TV campaigns and even organised their own publication into New Zealand?

Thanks should go to every town representative who has attended camping and travel expos, organised and promoted events and worked tirelessly to put us on the map.

Said Andrew Saunders from Gympie Regional Council: “I believe Rainbow has a great chance and it will be a reward for all of you, for years of product development and work building the destination into one that even Tourism Australia and TEQ recognise as a great tourism town.”

Members from Rainbow Beach Commerce and Tourism also contributed to the application with council, and agreed that the nomination alone was great publicity.

Our competitors, with a population below 5,000, include Georgetown, Airlie Beach, Richmond, Karumba, Kuranda, Winton, Agnes Water-1770, Yungaburra, Quilpie, Mount Morgan, Longreach, Cunnamulla, Boonah, St George, Ingham, Orchid Beach, Canungra, Montville, Woodford, Eumundi and Thargomindah.

The winner will receive a trophy, recognition and promotion plus a $7,500 Tourism Consultancy and Development Package provided by The Tourism Group, electronic logo, town signage artwork and represent Queensland for Australia’s Top Small Tourism Town.

Winners are determined 30% by an industry panel and a 70% by public vote.

Sign a Petition for Road Safety

T

ONY STEWART has been lobbying government for years to improve our roads. With the assistance of Tony Perrett MP, a petition was released just prior to Easter.

Called the ‘State controlled road safety issue - Gympie to Tin Can Bay and Rainbow Beach’ it states: Statistics show this road is the second most dangerous road in Wide Bay, marginally behind the Bruce Highway. There have been 14 deaths between 2011 and 2018 and 312 crashes between 2001 and 2019, equating to one crash every three weeks.

Your petitioners, therefore, request the House to ensure the upgrade of the road from Gympie to Tin Can Bay and Rainbow Beach and to provide a proper and safe passage for residents and tourists as a matter of urgency.

“Tony Perrett will be tabling the petition on October 12, the first day of sitting.

He urges everyone to spread the word, “Any businesses can share the petition on their website or anyone via their social media.

“Accidents have been out of hand since these statistics were printed, with more rollovers since Christmas. We’re asking for better signage, stopping bays for caravans and slow vehicles, and overtaking bays.”

ROY SOMERVILLE is the new General Manager at Rainbow Beach Sports Club.

The Community News hit Troy with six questions, so we can all get to know him.

Make sure you say hello, when you pop into the club!

What brings you to Rainbow Beach?

Who wouldn’t want to work and live in Rainbow! The opportunity came up to utilise my experience to revive the Sports Club back to its former glory.

Did you have a connection to the area?

I have played bowls at the Sports Club over the past eight years.

My family loves the area so much that my wife organised a surprise renewing of our vows at the Sports Club last year.

Where were you before Rainbow Beach?

I had a break from Club land over the last couple of years and became a logistics

manager and truck driver, but my heart has always been in hospitality.

What is your background with the industry?

I have been part of the Club industry since I was 17.

I worked as Human Resource Manager with 120 staff, to General Manager of Dapto Citizens Bowls Club for 10 years, before being approached to relocate to the Sunshine Coast to take the role of General Manager at Mooloolaba Bowls Club; then Coolum Beach Bowls Club.

So nearly all of my work career has been in the Club industry, starting as a glassy and working my way through with education and training.

Any plans for the club?

Plans include a new winter menu with a separate lunch and dinner menu, maintain the bowls green back to health to hold competitive bowls events, as well as social

Hobbies are bowls, spending time outdoors and being a netball dad to my three daughters.

Tin Can Bay Meals on Wheels are one of the wonderful groups you can talk to about volunteering at the Expo on May 22 - Robyn McAndrew and Shirley Sismey about to embark on their weekly delivery to Rainbow Beach where they are looking for people who would like to receive the service

URING COVID-19, two thirds of Aussie volunteers ceased work.

Volunteering has not recovered now restrictions are lifted, and this has been compounded by illness and caring responsibilities.

Now demand for services has increased and more volunteers are needed, according to Volunteering Australia.

To assist, a Cooloola Coast Community Volunteer Expo will be held on Saturday May 22 to the Tin Can Bay RSL Hall.

Carley O’Donnell, Coordinator of the Cooloola Human Services Network said, “The Gympie Region Volunteer Centre is hosting the event for National Volunteers’ Week to celebrate volunteering in the region.”

Come along between 10am and noon, and meet with over 15 local community groups who need you and your skills!

“We still want more stall holders, so please contact us!” reminded Carley.

Charities, not-for-profit organisations, community groups and any other volunteer involved organisations from Rainbow Beach, Tin Can Bay, Cooloola Cove and all surrounding areas are invited.

There will also be an Indigenous workshop and emerging elder, Aunty Lisa’s ‘Welcome to Country’; local musician, Scott Astill; a coffee van, face painting, dancing performance and free sausage sizzle with proceeds going back to the community.

There are many more benefits to volunteering learning new skills, confidence, meeting new friends, having fun all whilst making a difference.

So come on board - there are a diverse range of groups working for our coast, and you’ll meet them at the Expo!

AINBOW BEACH Amateur Anglers ran a Junior Fishing Clinic for local and holidaying children, and the good news is more activities are planned. Our next event will be kicking off at 8am on Saturday May 22 at Inskip Point.

This practical session will focus on how to catch fresh local bait and a few strategies for fishing with soft plastics.

The two-hour holiday clinic was run by Steve Bennett, Junior Mentor, and local fishing guru Drew Gardiner, President of the Club, with a large group of our juniors turning out for a morning of fun fishing activities.

Our budding anglers enjoyed the practical sessions on how to tie fishing knots and participated in a beach fishing education session where they learnt the ins and outs, different species of fish to target and the bait to use to entice fish onto their lines.

The clinic finished on a high with a Casting Competition - the casting accuracy of Libby Bennett (Juniors) and Riley Wheeler (Seniors) earnt them an ALVEY Reel prize pack!

Overall, it was a great morning with an abundance of tips and hints shared and, judging by the smile on the faces, a fun time was had by all.

Thanks to ALVEY Reels and Gardiner Fisheries for sponsorship and a sample bag of fishing goodies for each participant, and Drew Gardiner for sharing his wealth of knowledge with our next generation.

Campfires banned at Teewah Beach indefinitely

A

PROHIBITION on fires has been in place in the Cooloola Recreation Area since December 7, 2020, a Department of Environment and Science spokesperson has advised.

The Cooloola Recreation Area includes Noosa North Shore, Upper Noosa River, Teewah Beach and Rainbow Beach.

The ban was implemented to help protect visitors, reduce the risk of bushfires, reduce the incidence of people being exposed to the dangers of campfires covered with sand, and prevent visitors burning inappropriate things in campfires.

Following an ecological assessment of bushfire impacts from the 2019/20

bushfires and an assessment of the K’gari bushfire, the current ban on campfires will continue indefinitely within the Cooloola Recreation Area.

The ban includes all fires that are not fully self-contained, such as open campfires, fires in drums and other open containers where the fire can escape or cause ember drift. Gas barbecues can be used.

There is a history of escaped campfires in the Cooloola Recreation Area causing bushfires, which are difficult to control in the coastal heath vegetation and high dune terrain.

Since mid-2017, four bushfires have burned through 15,000 hectares at Teewah

Beach, which has caused serious damage to the national park’s natural and cultural values and left the coastal region prone to land slips.

On the spot fines of $667 can be issued to people who light fires while camping or visiting the Cooloola Recreation Area.

Campfires are permitted in the Inskip Point Recreation Area in accordance with all local directions for that area.

Cooking and heating appliances that meet the below requirements are permitted at Teewah Beach: • The appliance must use only manufactured fuel. Manufactured fuel does not include timber or wood.

• It must be used for cooking and/or heating only.

• It must be a minimum of 20cm off the ground and more than 2m from flammable materials.

• They do not have the potential to generate airborne embers or possibly ignite nearby ground fuels.

• They must be fully contained and never left unattended when in use.

• Appliances that are not fully selfcontained, such as braziers, are not permitted.

• All appliances, materials and fuels (e.g. heat beads) must be removed from the recreation area on your departure.

ASTER HAS COME and gone, but not without again leaving us a little disappointed. The weather was relentlessly unkind to the holiday makers and many were deterred and simply did not come. Those that did were generally well behaved.

Police, as you may have noticed, were out in force over the holiday period. Our main focus was road safety, and yes, that did include the beach.

General Duty and Road Policing Officers

from Tin Can Bay, Rainbow Beach, Sunshine Coast, Gympie and Maryborough all played a part in our Easter Operation.

The operation focused on the four-day long weekend, with over 1600 RBT being conducted, resulting in three drink driving offenders; 81 random drug tests identified 6 offenders, and 117 traffic infringement notices issued for offences ranging from speeding to defective vehicles.

Other offences, including drug offences, have seen a number of persons given

notices for court appearances.

Our main focus for the weekend was to keep the roads safe and free from trauma.

For our area, we did succeed in this task, but it was still disappointing to see the high level of traffic violations.

School is back. Please, for the safety of our little ones, be observant of the times and speed limits in and around schools and school zones. Road safety is the responsibility of each and every road user and police make no apologies for enforcing

HE 2021 RAINBOW BEACH Sandcastle Competition was held on a glorious sunny morning after a week of intermittent heavy rain.

Arron from Sandshapers of Noosa had an amazing sandcastle creation well underway, thanks to The Deck, the Community News and Cooloola Coast Realty.

By 9.30, 24 teams were working hard to create masterpieces, some from as far away as Victoria.

A steady stream of onlookers made their way down to the beach who were amazed by the mermaids, sea serpents, a pyramid, turtles, crocodiles, dragons, castles, an octopus and other incredible creations.

Arron had an extremely difficult time judging, his main criteria being attention to detail and smoothness of sand.

Creative Cuts Joel Mak at the Sports Club

Singer songwriter, Joel Makauskas, performs from 7.30pm in the main bar on May 7, straight after the Friday night raffles.

Joel uses his acoustic guitar, with a variety of effects and a looping station, to build multiple sounds, rhythms and harmonies.

He performs an extensive list of covers and originals, old and new, with influences from Kings of Leon and Pink Floyd, to John Butler and INXS. He also performs his original songs.

A local favourite, Joel is a seasoned performer who mashes up favourite classics, and even adds in some beatboxing.

Mary Valley Artslink has a calendar of events for 2021, highlighted by the annual Mary Valley Art Festival on July 22-25, which – like many other festivals – returns after it was cancelled last year.

The entry form for the festival will be released by the end of the month, and artists are being urged to put brush to canvas with more than $6000 up for grabs in prize money.

Starting as a photographer on the Canberra Times in 1989, Giulio has had work published in every major Scottish and London-based newspaper.

He packed up his life in Scotland and returned to hitchhike all the way around Australia photographing everyone who gave him a lift.

Over eight months, he hitchhiked more than 23,000km and photographed, spoke with and wrote about his 53 hitches.

He returned to Brisbane and selfpublished “...so I did”, the book of his hitchhiking journey. Listen to his story at Gympie Library, 1-2 pm, Monday May 17.

‘Songlines - Lines of Connecting, Dreaming and Remembering’ is the combined works of established and emerging First Nations artists from the three nations within the wider Gympie region, open May 6 to June 26.

The term ‘songline’ describes the features and direction of travel that had been sung and memorised for the traveller to know the pathway to their destination. A mapping of country through handed down lore, law, songs, stories, dance and ceremony along with geographical markers.

WENTY-TWO OF our group made it to the Macadamia Nut Farm with lots of food and good company. Needless to say, all reckoned they would not be needing tea that night.

At our last coffee meeting we said farewell to one of our members, John Missen. John is moving south, to be closer to family. We wish John all the best, and would like to let him know we will miss him.

We enjoyed a visit to Gunabul in Gympie and our next coffee meeting will be Tuesday May 4 at the Rainbow Beach Surf Club at 10 am.

Barry’s lunch at the RSL bought back vivid memories of his time with the band in Vietnam. He said, “It was a great experience, full on, but so fulfilling to play to the soldiers, often just a short distance from the front line.”

Patrolled Beach Swim in the flags in front of the Surf Lifesaving tower. Walk via the steps or walkway near the lookout and surf club, or drive onto Griffin Esplanade. 4WD beach access begins here.

Coloured Sands Visit the patrolled beach, near the surf tower or the lookout to see the 70 plus colours in our cliffs. From town, walk south 1km along the beach - for best colours 4WD or tour a further 9km.

Remember it is a gazetted road.

Carlo Sand Blow Park at the top of Cooloola Drive, and walk 600m up from the car park or bushwalk about 2km from the National Parks Office for spectacular views of the Coloured Sands, Double Island Point, Tin Can Bay Inlet and hang gliders.

Poona Lake Drive to Bymien Picnic Area (2WD) via 3km gravel on the Freshwater Road, (off Rainbow Beach Road). It’s a 40 minute walk to reach the cool waters of Lake Poona through beautiful rainforest and carrol (grey myrtle) scrub.

Searys Creek Only 7km from town towards Gympie, with 2 waterholes, boardwalks, bridges and history – do read the sign and spot the creatures. Always cool on the hottest of days.

Rainbow Beach Headland A look out, a viewing platform, 2 playgrounds, a skatepark, BBQs and picnic facilities. See the whales from here in season and watch the surfers out the front. Take a photo at the Cherry Venture propeller.

Double Island Point Access via the 4WD only Great Beach Drive or Freshwater Track. See dolphins, whales (seasonal), manta rays, turtles and walk up to our historic lighthouse. It has the longest break in Australia -when the swell lines up.

Mudlo Rocks Wander here at low tide, play in rock pools and watch 4WDs navigate any exposed rocks. ALWAYS check conditions and ask locals before you 4WD - it is not always safe, even close to low tide.

Middle Rock When tides and conditions allow, the walk to Middle Rock and back is a beautiful way to check out the Coloured Sands. From here, vehicle permits are required and dogs are prohibited.

You can launch your boat at Norman Point and Crab Creek in Tin Can Bay or Carlo Point and Bullock Point near Rainbow Beach. All except Bullock Point offer toilet and scenic picnic facilities.

HE CLEANING BENCH at Gardiner Fisheries is a massive hit. Said Drew Gardiner, “We get LOTS of people using it every week. Cleaning facilities have been needed here in Rainbow for many, many years, however seem to get overlooked.

“Although it would be great to have a councilprovided facility, the issue of fish waste/ dumping is a major one. Being situated at our store enables us to deal with the fish waste at no ongoing cost to the local government.”

The business is also a designated drop-off point for Fisheries research. They collect species of interest, frames, and blast freeze, ready for collection by Queensland Fisheries for research purposes.

“It’s an awesome addition and draw card for our store and it’s one way we can help (through donations for use of the facility) provide funding to the local Rainbow Fishing Club and Tin Can Bay Coastguard.”

Tin Can Bay Coastguard said, “We are pleased to welcome Gardiner Fishing to our list of supporters. Our collection box is at their fantastic fish cleaning table which is able to be used by anyone in the area, with a request to make a small donation to the Coast Guard.”

HE THREAT OF a continued Covid closure hung over the whole Cooloola Coast until the last minute.

Plans were made, but it wasn’t until two days before Easter that we got the news we were hoping for, that it was all systems go!

Having missed out on our roadside collection in 2020, we were hopeful that people would visit our area and support our crews dressed in fluro vests and armed on the roadside with buckets.

In addition, we also had plans to ride the Mantaray Barges from Inskip Point to Fraser Island to boost our holiday fundraising.

We were pleased to find so many kind people, both locals and visitors, donating generously and being so complimentary about the need to keep us in the community. Several people had even been rescued by us or had known others who had needed to call on us.

A big thank you to all who helped, volunteers, the generous folk who donated, those who buy raffle tickets, and to Mantaray Barges who provide a wonderful service getting people across to Fraser.

The Sunshine Coast has an abundance of off-leash dog beaches. We take our dog there regularly. Have never had any issues with other dogs. Shame on Rainbow for not having any at all!

Times have changed and people socialise their dogs well now. Also frequent the wonderful off-leash dog parks in Gympie and have never had an issue. Come on Rainbow Beach and Tin Can Bay! Move with the times!

E HAD A BUSY time at the Dolphin Centre during the school holidays.

Fortunately we had most of the dolphins visit. Mystique is still missing in action but Patch and Harmony seem to be stepping up to the task with bringing in the odd rubbish item from Snapper Creek.

I am glad to report that we haven’t seen any plastics around, so hopefully the public is taking note of trying to reduce plastic usage or, better still, making sure recycling is done.

Our three-year calf ‘Luna’ seems to be

settling into the feeding program and is starting to take an occasional fish from the public. He is a fast learner, so hopefully he will stay in the feeding program.

Sometimes the adult male dolphins will exercise their will and chase out young male dolphins who may be a threat to their authority.

We open at 7am and have viewing of the dolphins until around 7.45am. This gives visitors a chance to hear all about the history and attributes of our Australian Humpback dolphins. Photography is welcomed.

E HOPE THAT everyone enjoyed the Easter break and managed to spend some quality time with friends and family!

I think everyone that attended the Sandcastle Competition would agree that it was a great event for our community! It was wonderful to see so many people enjoying each other’s company and so many creative groups producing quite amazing sculptures.

A huge thanks to Chappy Ronnie who organised and coordinated the event supported by our amazing P&C. Additionally, the support shown by our local businesses to donate such wonderful prizes was nothing short of incredible.

School is back and we are quickly into routines and working hard in what will be another very busy term.

By the time this goes to print we will have already participated in both our school and community ANZAC Day Services.

We are so fortunate at Rainbow Beach State School to have such amazing support, with Mrs Cherie Mason volunteering her time to provide an opportunity for our students to continue the proud tradition of performing in a choir.

We are very grateful for her time and expertise in supporting our students to learn and foster a love of music.

This year the Rainbow Beach State School Choir consists of students from Year 2-6 who will perform two songs at the community ANZAC Day Service-

We have a number of events planned for this term at Rainbow Beach State School, including our interhouse Cross Country which will see our sporting houses of Fraser and Cooloola face off for the first time in 2021.

We have the Coolican’s (Mr Mileson’s Year 4,5,6 class), heading off on a three-day, two-night camp at Barambah Environmental Education Centre.

They will participate in an exciting program aimed at providing safe and managed experiences for our students that only camps can provide.

A little later this term we will be returning to the annual NAPLAN assessments that are planned for mid-May. This is always a great opportunity for students in Years 3,5,7 and 9 to participate in a nationally administered standardised test and allow for some individual and school feedback as to how we are performing.

We work hard to minimise the stress to students while celebrating individual success and investigate areas to improve.

1/2 Nursing Home Excursion

A

S PART OF A local community excursion, Year 1/2 visited the local Nursing Home (Residency By Dillons).

They viewed the construction site and observed the changes that were occurring in the grounds.

The students enthusiastically read books to the residents and everyone enjoyed solving some jigsaw puzzles. The residents expressed that they had a wonderful time.

Student recounts: The bus took us to the nursing home and then we went to the park. We started eating and we were walking on the beach.

On Friday we went to the nursing home.

We met Frosty and he gave us a picture that he coloured in for us. We read a book.

Quinn - Year 1

Residents helped Quinn and Lucy with jigsaw puzzles

On Friday we went to the nursing home.

I met Edna and read a book. I gave Edna a Chatterbox.

I ALL. We hope you all had a happy and safe Easter break, even though it was a very wet one.

Fishing outside has really started to fire up, especially the closer in grounds which have been producing quality scarlets and sweetlip, along with some cracking cod and plenty of snapper.

Snapper have been a bit hit and miss, however when on, they are in good numbers for this time of the year, so let’s hope it might be a good season ahead.

Out wider, large tuskies have been thick

and a regular catch. Quite a few nice Red Emperor coming over lately along with wrasse, husser, pearl and Moses perch, jobfish and trout.

Along the beaches a few nice Jew have been landed, and some hot sessions on large tailor in the 70-90cm range, which is awesome fun and a great fight at that size. The new moon seems to be the go for these monsters.

ARDINER FISHERIES takes fishing seriously. Our team loves nothing more than sharing our collective knowledge to give customers the best fishing experience in our amazing and diverse fishing grounds.

Last month, we had all team members fishing in the Rainbow Beach Amateur Anglers second fishing competition. Ash, Alex and Jye targeted offshore fishing in pristine weather conditions and produced quality catches.

Drew worked the beaches and estuaries.

All used bait and tackle from Gardiner Fisheries and there was nothing too fancy in play.

Ash shares this from his trip: “Conditions were perfect, and we started by scouting around just south of the bar for schools of pelagics and it didn’t long to find them.

“We then fished shallow grounds from Inskip to Double Island in depths around 18 metres with great results.

“As the early Westerly wind dropped out, we ventured due east and found a good show on the sounder, so we did a prospecting drop in 40 metres... that’s where we spent the next two hours, hitting our bag limit of quality snapper and sweetlip.”

The Memorial Surf Classic A

FTER STARTING OFF the 2021 Memorial Surf Classic with camping at Freshwater on Friday night, the crew was ready for an early start.

Driving over the headland in the morning things weren’t looking so promising, with not even a ripple in the water, we were hesitant about the comp but Huey the Surf God came through for us and the waves began to build-up during the morning.

Kicking off the Memorial with the juniors and going right through to the old farts (over 50s), we had a successful fun day shared by members of 35 years and the families it has adopted throughout those years.

We welcome all to join us for a nonstressful day filled with history and memories made for our future generations.

Once the day had finished we headed back to the campsite where a presentation was held to announce the 2021 Surf Classic winners:

NOTHER MONTH HAS passed us by. We eventually received some rain so we were able to complete our Mens Open Day without any postponement.

The course is looking very good with improvements to fairways and greens on going.

The greens staff have planted some Lilly Pilly plants to continue the beautification of the course.

The veteran golfers have had to reschedule many championship games in the past month.

Our resident professional, James Taylor, is willing to give lessons to anyone wishing to take up golf.

He also does refresher courses for those who wish to fine tune their skills. He has clubs for sale and anything else needed for members and visitors wishing to play.

We welcome new members wishing to join our club.

Enquiries can be made at the Country Club Front Counter, and staff will accommodate your needs.

HE COOLOOLA DRAGON Boat Club is very committed and competitive in our sport but we also pride ourselves in being active socially.

To this end, a climb of Mt Cooroora event was organised and ten members attended this team-building activity.

Three completed the climb to the top while the others enjoyed a hike around the base of the mountain.

Another activity, camping and hiking the Carnarvon Gorge has been organised for October.

Dragon Boaters are also keen kayakers.

To this end, the TCB Yacht Club was approached, to make available an area for fencing and installing a kayak rack to house members’ own kayaks. This was approved and has been installed.

Now back to our core business/sport!

Training continues Thursday afternoons and Sunday mornings in preparation for the first regatta of the Wide Bay Series at 1770 on May 29.
