HE RAINBOW BEACH Blokes are gearing up to launch their XXL 2024 Calendar, featuring some of Rainbow Beach’s very own in delightful and unexpected poses.

Mark the calendar for Sunday 5 November, as the Sports Club will open its doors from 4.30 pm for this much-anticipated event. Early birds will have the chance to secure their exclusive copy of the calendar, which promises more than just your regular page flips.

But there’s a deeper sentiment behind this collection of photographs. It’s a heartfelt tribute to the late Timmy R. Janek. Moreover, every

calendar purchased will support a noble cause.

The proceeds are pledged to Grab Life

By The Balls, a remarkable Sunshine Coast charity dedicated to promoting men’s mental health awareness and initiating valuable programs. The alliance between the Blokes and this passionate charity began a year ago, both echoing the same mission to bolster the wellbeing of men in the community.

In a generous move to give back, the co-founders of the calendar have decided to redirect the 2023 profits to serve the community further. Attendees can look forward to a delightful performance by Mick Neven from

Funny Coast Comedy, ensuring an evening filled with therapeutic laughter.

ESTIVAL OF SMALL HALLS Summer Tour is stopping in Rainbow Beach again!

Presented by Woodfordia Inc. and hosted by the Rainbow Beach Community Centre, Scottish band Assynt and Australian artist Jackie Marshall will be performing at our Small Hall on 17 December 2023.

Local poet Sheryl Anderson will open the evening show with her thought provoking poems and tales (if you missed out on her last performance, be sure not to miss this one!).

Bar run by the volunteers at the Community Centre and BBQ run by the team at Rainbow Beach Boardriders will be available from 5.30pm.

Doors open at 6.30pm, with the show starting precisely at 7pm.

Tickets are $20, $5 (13-16), free for the little ones and are available at the Community Resource Centre or online at www.festivalofsmallhalls.com

T 1050HRS ON SATURDAY 11 November the Rainbow Beach RSL Sub-Branch will be conducting a ceremony at the Cenotaph to mark Remembrance Day. At 11am on 11 November 1918 the guns on the Western Front fell silent after more than four

years of continuous warfare. In November the Germans, having heavy defeats inflicted upon them over the preceding four months, called for an armistice in order to secure a peace settlement. They accepted allied terms that amounted to unconditional surrender.

Remembrance Day in Australia is dedicated to Australians who have died as a result of war, particularly World War 1.

All members and visitors of the community are invited to attend the Cenotaph in Rainbow Beach to pay their respects.

Locals shine at recent World Cup

OW AWESOME IS THIS?! A tiny bunch of locals from Combined Martial Arts Cooloola made the trek to Sydney in late October for the ISKA (International Sports Karate/Kickboxing Association) World Cup and came home with a swag of titles – and barely enough room to hold all their belts!

Tag-A-Jack Fishing Competition 2023 I

T’S ON AGAIN! $5,000 worth of prizes to be won!

The Chandlery Bait & Tackle are hosting their annual Tin Can Bay Tag-A-Jack Fishing Comp! After a quick hiatus last year the comp is on again with even bigger prizes up for grabs. There is a whopping $5,000 worth of prizes to be won!

The Tag-A-Jack Fishing Competition is a catchand-release fishing comp run during November and December. Catching, tagging and releasing Mangrove Jack in the local waterways of Tin Can Bay and the Great Sandy Strait.

This is the 4th year The Chandlery Bait & Tackle Tin Can Bay has hosted the competition and is the 2nd year of it being a tagging competition in conjunction with Suntag and Info Fish.

The event is capped to just 50 participants so get in quick to register. Registration closes at 4pm on 15 November. You don’t want to miss this one.

Lines in 12am 18 November 2023 and lines out 12pm 17 December, with the presentation to be held at 4.30pm 17 December at the Tin Can Bay Fishing Club House, 33 Dolphin Avenue Tin Can Bay. The last competition saw 386 Mangrove Jacks tagged by 37 anglers. Anglers were from our local community and from further afield, with participants from Brisbane, Sunshine Coast, Gympie, Maryborough and Hervey Bay. This event continues to grow each year and enquiries from anglers began as early as July with teams organising their stay in our beautiful region.

There are 5 prize categories and a weekly prize for the best photo of the week. This will be chosen by The Chandlery Bait & Tackle employees at the end of each week. So make sure you practice taking your selfies!

AINBOW BEACH Learning Community will host the CoolaFlix Film for November: Oddball.

Oddball is a 2015 Australian family favourite featuring a cute but troublesome dog who befriends penguins. Based on a true story brought to life by actors Shane Jacobsen and Sara Snook.

IRS RUN A free film night every month in the hall on Market Saturday night as part of their CoolaFlix program funded by the Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal (FRRR), with the aim of getting local residents together for affordable social, cultural, and informative events.

Each month a different community group gets to choose the film and host the event to promote their activities and raise funds.

October’s host group was Cooloola Coastcare. They had displays featuring their TurtleCare project, WildFlower workshops, field trips and booklets, and their signature citizen science event - the Cooloola BioBlitz.

They raised funds selling hot dogs, popcorn, soft drinks and ice creams.

Rainbow Beach Boardriders ran the bar ahead of their turn to host in December.

UR GRANT application to the Gambling Community Benefit Fund for hall equipment was successful and we have already installed noise reducing and block-out curtains in the hall.

Already we have noticed the difference in acoustics and room temperature, and appreciate the privacy these curtains provide.

Next items to purchase with the grant funds will be a drinks display fridge, an upright freezer, and stage lockers.

We will also buy some AV equipment, just in time for the Festival of Small Halls on 17 December.

AINBOW BEACH hall was packed for our CoolaFlix movie for October: Albe Falzon’s 1972 Surf classic Morning of the Earth. We had our biggest crowd so far, with more than 100 people in attendance.

This iconic surf classic was a ground-breaking film when first released. It was a film that shaped many young people’s thinking in the 70s to try to live a more natural lifestyle.

Many old surfers were keen to see if its message had withstood the test of time. It has, and so has the awardwinning soundtrack. We had people singing along and loud applause at the end of the film.

A display of classic surfboards was gathered from various private collectors and drew great interest from young attendees who commented on the size and shapes of the old boards, marvelling that there were no leg ropes back then.

Discussions are already underway with a local business sponsor for more classic surf film revivals.

A big thanks to Justin and Albe for permitting us to screen their lovingly remastered film, use their graphics, and generally providing support. Copies of the remastered version of Morning of the Earth are available online via www. morningoftheearth.com

ELCOME BACK to Term 4!

On reflection it has certainly been a busy year, with much planning and preparation going into building the Outside School Hours Care (OSHC).

There has also been a lot of fun with the mid-year Colour Fun Run, school excursions, and various creative stalls for the students. Next on the agenda for the P&C is the annual Christmas Raffle.

Much like last year, we have done the rounds and reached out to the community businesses in hopes for some support and donations towards the Christmas Raffle. We have yet again been overwhelmed by the generosity of the community and the families willing to support our P&C. Prizes have all been collated and hamper packs put together, with the prizes reaching over $5,000 in

value. Tickets have recently been distributed so no doubt you will soon see some of the students selling their tickets and be sure to keep a lookout for tickets being sold around town.

We would like to send out a huge thank you to all our sponsors for their wonderful generosity and we look forward to drawing the winners at our School Christmas Concert!

We are also pleased to announce that Tuckshop is back on this Term, and we would like to welcome Mrs Tina Yu, one of our Prep parents, who has kindly volunteered her time to deliver tuckshop to our students each week.

We are very happy to have Tina on board and would like to thank her for her support. Parents and students alike are excited to have the Tuckshop open yet again.

We are very proud of the work they have been able to produce. These students have been working hard to ensure they are as best prepared as they can be, for high school next year.

Enrolments for 2024 We are busy making plans for 2024 and want to encourage any families planning to enrol their child in Kindy, Prep, or any other grade, to come and speak to us as soon as possible.

This will allow us to consider class compositions and ensure we are ready to deliver best possible outcomes for your child.

We are already aware of several

families relocating and want to thank them for keeping us abreast of their future plans.

Mosaic for Miss Sarah Over the recent months, staff, students, families and friends have been busy putting together a Mosaic in honour of Miss Sarah.

We are proud of the way the mosaic project turned out and we feel it is a fitting tribute to somebody that brought so much to our whole school community.

It was a great project that facilitated many happy conversations of our fondest memories. She continues to be sorely missed by all that were lucky enough to have known her.

’M CHAIRING OUR planning meeting for this year’s Remembrance Day commemorations at Tin Can Bay. “OK”, I say, “Who have we got to lay the wreath for the Army?”

Peter Brogden’s arm shot up like he was back at Kapooka in 1969 as a new army recruit. “I’ll do it”, he said. I didn’t expect anything less.

Peter Brogden enlisted in the Australian Army in 1969 and retired from the Army in 1989 as a Warrant Officer Class 2 after serving 20 years in the Corps of Signals. He served in Melbourne, Ingleburn, Port Moresby, Sydney, Townsville, Watsonia and finally in the well-named Diggers Rest, maintaining the technical and radio communications for the Australian Defence Force.

Following his Army Service, Peter spent 19 years in TAFE colleges teaching electrical and electronics skills. He joined the RSL in Epping, Victoria in 1987 and moved to Tin Can Bay in February 2021, where he was immediately elected Treasurer to urgently fill a gap in the Board of the Tin Can Bay RSL Sub Branch.

I asked Peter why Remembrance Day was so important. He said, “It’s a time for both military, ex-military, and the general community to reflect and

remember the lives that were lost in conflicts around the world,” he said.

“It’s so important that we never forget those who gave up their lives to fight for Australia. It’s also why we observe the Ode every Friday night at 6pm – Lest we Forget.”

The whole community is invited to attend our Remembrance Day service on Saturday 11th of the 11th starting at 10.50am at ANZAC Memorial Park in Tin Can Bay. The service will be followed by refreshments back at the Sub-Branch.

In closing I’m proud to say Peter Brogden – thank you for your service!

HE COOLOOLA COAST Local Ambulance Committee held our Flower Show last month and we were once again overwhelmed by the generosity of the attendees.

The flower and plant entries were the largest numbers we have recorded for many years and provided a colourful and interesting display with the judges commenting favourably on the quality and quantity of the entries. There were also some beautiful photographic entries on display.

The stall holders provided a wonderful variety of crafts, cakes, plants, and flower arrangements for sale. Many thanks to all involved.

The children from the local schools took part in a colouring-in competition and it was encouraging

to also see a large number of floral and plant entries from the young ones as well.

During the day, the crowd was entertained by the Cooloola Coast Ukulele Group and the Banjolele Group. Both groups performed favourite tunes and songs and contributed to a vibrant, happy atmosphere.

The committee was most appreciative of the assistance provided by the ladies from the CWA with the morning and afternoon teas.

The show was a great success and a big thank you goes to all who took the time to place an entry in the show and who came along on the day to support us. As mentioned before, all proceeds from the day go towards supporting our local Ambulance Stations in Tin Can Bay and Rainbow Beach.

National Heart Foundation, to raise funds for heart disease research that will help save lives, while walking 42.2 km (or more) over hours, days or weeks during October.

By halfway through October, Twins had doubled their 42km goal, and surpassed their fundraising goals.

Judy Kiddle told me how proud the Walking groups are of Denise and Kate walking from Tin Can Bay to Cooloola Cove prior to the CC Wheelie Walkers’ scheduled twice weekly walks (Mondays and Fridays).

Congratulations to Melissa for your 200th officially recorded walk, and to Gwenda for your 100th walk. Check your letter boxes for your Award Certificate, voucher to spend at the Heart Foundation Online Shop, and your special badge to pin.

VER THE LAST month we have continued to support homeless in Gympie by sending mainly cash donations to the organisation, feeding the 30-odd people every night.

Time to Celebrate!

URING OCTOBER Coles were promoting Barbeque Month, retailers were promoting Halloween, but October is much more important – it is Probus Month and Seniors Month, time to celebrate.

Members have taken to celebrating in several ways. Thirty attended Sublime Farm and Brewery for a free $25 lunch. Our club received funding assistance from a Gympie Regional Council community grant to host this event.

Everyone had the opportunity to chat and make some new friends with guests and enjoy a delicious lunch. President Katrina presented a potted history of Probus, how it works and local activities which our members enjoy.

Jokesters, Judy Kiddle and Graham McClurg, entertained us with some jokes and Tour Director, Jo Said, invited everyone to join us for future activities celebrating Seniors Month.

On 7 October, 23 members and guests gathered at the Crab Creek picnic area for an old-fashioned

Games Day and Sausage Sizzle. Judy Kiddle organised fun games – egg and spoon race, quoits, throw the tennis ball into a container, as well as some ‘brain games’.

The egg and spoon race was hilarious as the wind blew the polystyrene eggs out of the spoons as the contestants were running along!

We were fortunate that two of our guests, George and Lee, manned the barbeque. They also cleaned and packed up which was much appreciated.

Prizes were raffled – some donated by a member and a $50 gift kindly donated by the Sands Pharmacy. This event was made possible by a grant from the Probus Association of Queensland.

To finish up our Probus Month/Seniors Month activities we had a Dolphin Ferry Cruise, followed by lunch at the Tin Can Bay Country Club.

ELCOME, first I would like to thank all our visitors that supported our Branch events. We are amazed how lucky our Branch is by people from the community coming along.

Thank you for supporting our September Hoy, for Daffodil Day at Cooloola Bowls. The groceries as prizes were a great success and we will now include monthly. Hoy on 20 December will be Christmas themed - prize for Best Dressed.

We also had our Annual High Tea at Cooloola Bowls Club, with a great response. We thank you all for coming along. Lillian won the best High Tea cup, saucer, plate and the beautiful setting even had its own tray.

I read out our Annual In-Kind Donations which we donate to hospitals, and guests were amazed at what we make, that’s why we are always happy receiving wool donations, all put to good use.

A special thank you to the Cooloola Bowls Club, who made special trips to open the club for us to set up.

Our donations: we make Domestic Violence Packs for ladies, men, and children including teddy & book. All include new items of toiletries, towel, washer pen and notebook as per QCWA guidelines. Our total packs this year = 216. Trauma Teddies = 384, preemie beanies = 420, toy owls = 217, toy octopuses = 184, knee rugs = 94.

ATTENDEES DANCED the warm night away with such enthusiasm at our October Old Time Dance. It was humbling for the Cooloola Coast Dances Group’s 3rd Anniversary of holding dances in the Bay and nearby towns.

Goomboorian Memorial Hall buzzed with smiling, happy patrons dancing to Chris Doyle’s great music choices.

Thank you Chris you travel a long way for us to enjoy our monthly Country Hall Dance. We appreciate your talent and look forward to another year in 2024.

Young Marcus and his friends are enjoying coming to our dance.

Our elderly energetic ladies enjoy teaching them as they are well mannered and very respectful. Would there be young ladies who would like to come along to the dances also to help them as it would be greatly appreciated for them to have dance partners.

Parents, consider coming to the dance and bringing young men and women who would like to join in as it really is a very good social outing for all ages. Students only pay $5 each for social dancing and a country supper as well.

Mobile homes and campervans can stay overnight near the Hall.

Patrons can look forward to visiting local cafes and places of interest in and around the Goomboorian Community whilst dancing in our 1914 wooden-floored hall. You are very welcome (make a weekend of it).

The raffle was well received, with the meat tray (from Tin Can Bay Butchers) being won by Karen W from Widgee, the first fruit and veg tray was won by Jenny G from Woombye, the second won by Chris D from North Lakes. The fruit and veg trays come from the Fruit Mart in Tin Can Bay. The local businesses are proud to display their produce and appreciate the purchase of the trays by the dance coordinator. It is one way of helping our businesses and our winners as they get to eat the goodies and it’s only $1 per ticket for the raffle.

Ready to Jingle

HE COOLABAY CHOIR is once more ‘getting its jingle on’ in preparation for the Christmas season.

Practice is under way for their regular performance at the Cooloola Cove Carol service, on Saturday 9 December, which this year will include some timeless Aussie carols penned in the 1940s

by J. Wheeler and W.G. James.

This community choir is open to all and welcomes new members.

The repertoire covers a wide range – songs old and new, rounds, 3-part harmonies, world music, and singalongs. And it’s lots of fun!

The Choir meets at 3pm every Wednesday at the Veterans’ and Community Hall in Cooloola Cove.

Wind wins against sailors

NOTHER BLUSTERY south-easterly wind saw ten boats battle it out on the water against the tide to the leeward mark. One ‘new’ Flying Fifteen crew retired early and made several attempts getting back to the jetty just under jib, the wind and the tide beating them each time.

Another Flying Fifteen limped back to shore without a jib having heard a loud bang which was the forestay breaking. The mast was then held up with the spinnaker halyard and a lot of hope.

An exhausted fleet safely returned and all was well after a drink and a sausage sizzle.

The Green Fleet (sail training) on the other hand have had two great days of sailing with several sailors on the water including the Sea Cadets from Gympie. Anyone who is interested in learning to sail, please contact Russell 0405 063 894 or Kay 0447 631 479.

Patrolled Beach Swim in the flags in front of the Surf Lifesaving tower. Walk via the steps or walkway near the lookout and surf club, or drive onto Griffin Esplanade. 4WD beach access begins here.

Coloured Sands Visit the patrolled beach, near the surf tower or the lookout to see the 70 plus colours in our cliffs. From town, walk south 1km along the beach - for best colours 4WD or tour a further 9km. Remember it is a gazetted road.

Carlo Sand Blow Park at the top of Cooloola Drive, and walk 600m up from the car park or bushwalk about 2km from the National Parks Office for spectacular views of the Coloured Sands, Double Island Point, Tin Can Bay Inlet and hang gliders.

Poona Lake Drive to Bymien Picnic Area (2WD) via 3km gravel on the Freshwater Road, (off Rainbow Beach Road).

It’s a 40 minute walk to reach the cool waters of Lake Poona through beautiful rainforest and carrol (grey myrtle) scrub.

Searys Creek Only 7km from town towards Gympie, with 2 waterholes, boardwalks, bridges and history – do read the sign and spot the creatures.

Always cool on the hottest of days.

Rainbow Beach Headland A look out, a viewing platform, 2 playgrounds, a skatepark, BBQs and picnic facilities. See the whales from here in season and watch the surfers out the front. Take a photo at the Cherry Venture propeller.

Double Island Point Access via the 4WD only Great Beach Drive or Freshwater Track. See dolphins, whales (seasonal), manta rays, turtles and walk up to our historic lighthouse. It has the longest break in Australia -when the swell lines up.

Mudlo Rocks Wander here at low tide, play in rock pools and watch 4WDs navigate any exposed rocks. ALWAYS check conditions and ask locals before you 4WD - it is not always safe, even close to low tide.

Middle Rock When tides and conditions allow, the walk to Middle Rock and back is a beautiful way to check out the Coloured Sands. From here, vehicle permits are required and dogs are prohibited.

Inskip Point This peninsula is the gateway to Fraser Island, a favourite fishing spot and pet friendly camping grounds for generations. Only 15 minutes drive (2WD) from Rainbow Beach.

Freshwater Picnic Area Walk to and swim in nearby Freshwater Lake, picnic or BBQ at the beautiful shady day-use area, found before Freshwater Road reaches Teewah Beach. 4WD only.

Tin Can Bay Foreshore Walk 4km from Crab Creek to Norman Point, over picturesque bridges, signage of flora and fauna, through mangroves, playgrounds and outdoor gyms. It is mostly flat and very safe for children on wheels.

Feed Wild Dolphins at Norman Point Arrive from 7am, after feeding (fees apply), the dolphins leave for another day. A picturesque peninsula with public pool, playground, sailing, boat ramp and pontoon and picnic facilities.

Carlo Point For spectacular sunsets over the water, take a cheese platter or fish and chips and watch the day’s end.

EAN’S ICE WAS started over thirty years ago on 19 March 1993 from small beginnings.

Unable to keep up the supply of firewood for campers and holiday makers we solved this issue by purchasing a portable sawmill so we could cut and bag our own firewood to sell.

We rented half a shed and set ourselves up with a small ice manufacturing machine, a container for storage of product, and a secondhand forklift.

As the only supplier of ice on Fraser Island the next step was to have a purpose built 4-wheel drive 8 ton freezer/chiller truck to service this area.

As professional fishermen we needed bulk ice for our own use and other fishermen, but it soon became clear that the retail outlets for ice in Rainbow Beach were poorly serviced.

This then became a full delivery service for other suppliers with the freight of fruit, vegetables, ice-creams, laundry, alcohol, frozen goods, bread and meat.

Bagged ice was being transported from Gympie in an unrefrigerated truck over a road which was then classified as “the worst road to the most beautiful beach in Australia”.

We have always taken pride in the quality of our products, and the service we have provided to our customers, and we were rewarded by their loyalty and support and their continued business.

We decided to make wholesale packaged ice our focus.

During this time, we shovelled and packed 3.5 kilo bags of ice by hand, stacked bagged ice in the container by hand, and delivered it in the commonly named ‘Dino Truck’.

For this we have always been grateful.

As demand increased, we gradually updated our ice machine, storage, and vehicle.

We have enjoyed being part of the Rainbow Beach community, but after thirty years and three generations working in the Ice Worx it is now time for the Deans to move in a different direction.

In 1999, we decided both our premises and storage were inadequate, so we built a new factory at Karoonda Road.

Ian and Marilyn are retiring, Tony has moved into his area of expertise as a skipper working in North Queensland, Maddie has reduced her workload of up to four jobs down to one and is doing a university course in accounting, Jack has a mature age apprenticeship in fabrication, Kacy wants to travel overseas, and Mick has attained his marine engineer degree and skipper ticket.

Over the years we continued to update our machines, storage, and truck. Until eventually we were producing 12 tons of ice in 24 hours, storing our bagged ice in two freezer rooms that could hold 160 pallets, and we upgraded our road truck to a freezer truck.

The packaging of ice became fully automated with PLC (Programmable Logic Controllers).

We were now delivering ice to Noosa North Shore, Gympie, Tin Can Bay, Rainbow Beach, Maryborough, Hervey Bay, Howard, and all of Fraser Island.

Of course, this is not a good-bye from the Deans as we have been in this region for over fifty years. You will still see Ian and Jack on the water fishing or putting in a crab pot or two and Maddie, Shelly, and Marilyn having a coffee somewhere in Rainbow Beach.

Our customer base included caravan parks, supermarkets, corner shops, service stations, resorts, hotels, meat works, seafood processors, farmers, bait and tackle outlets, campers, and major events including Gympie Muster, Fishing Classics and Festivals.

The new owner of Deans Ice Worx, Kleer Ice Supplies appreciates and understands the industry and is keen to work with our customers with a quality product and good service.

NE OF THE MOST exciting aspects of Industrial Technology and Design (ITD) for Year 7 students is the opportunity to get hands-on. This term, the Year 7 students at Tin Can Bay School began their introduction to ITD with a game of Jenga.

While this may appear to be all fun and games, the exercise was used to highlight the real-world applications of design principles and technology.

Over the next few weeks, the Year 7 students will hone their skills and work on a Jenga set of their own.

S PREDICTED last month, October has been a very busy month for Tin Can Bay Bowls Club.

The club was still reeling from the loss of Kerry when we heard the news that Phil Bell, a previous member, had also passed away. Phil and his beloved wife Trish were only here for a visit in September. Our prayers and best wishes are with you Trish.

President Ann has had her surgery and hubby Barry is also up for another hospital visit. Just to get the trifecta up Robyn White is also attending hospital. Good luck to all.

Hudson’s Day of golf and bowls for 2023 was a huge success once again. This day is one of the most popular events on the calendar. Thank you Ann and Barry; we know you both were ill and struggling, but you soldiered on.

T IS WITH SADNESS that I acknowledge the sudden passing of Kerry Lowrey. Kerry was well-known within the club and local community. Although a keen lawn bowler, Kerry also supported golfing activities. Kerry often put her hand in her own pocket to purchase little decorative knick-knacks for a variety of club functions to ensure a pleasant time was had by all. She was an absolute character with the propensity to lift the spirits of all who knew her. Her friendly smile and jovial disposition made our world a better place.

A former member of our club Phil Bell also suddenly passed away. Phil was a keen golfer, lawn bowler, and club member. He and his wife had recently moved south due to medical requirements; however had visited his many friends here in late September for a catch-up.

Our thoughts are with Kerry’s partner Ross and her family, as well as Phil’s wife Trish at this time.

Both Kerry and Phil will be sorely missed.

Membership of the golf club has increased and we are currently seeing a bevy of visitors playing on our course. Our resident golf professional James Taylor and his staff have been kept on their toes with bookings and golf operations.

Annual General Meeting: The Cooloola Dragon Boat Club held their annual general meeting on 1 October. As part of the proceedings, a new committee was nominated and duly voted in.

Robyn Clarke, who had been the club President for the past year, was re-elected as President; Heather Dickson stood down as Vice President and was replaced by Toni Archer; Kerri Southern stood down as club Treasurer and was replaced by Carol Stadelmann; and finally, Elaine Dimock was re-elected as Club Secretary.

We offer a heartfelt vote of thanks to the two outgoing club officers and welcome the new committee, offer them all the support we can provide and wish them every success in the coming year.

Come and Try Out: There are several excellent reasons for having a try-out at paddling with the Dragons and here are some of them: It is a gentle but effective way of getting fit and we all want to get fit!

The friendship and camaraderie of the dragon paddlers is second to none – all newcomers receive a very warm welcome and assistance from all our current members.

A try-out in the dragon boat will not cost you a cent – your first four runs in the dragon boat are absolutely free so you have a no-risk way of working out if it suits you or not.

When you are on the dragon boat you get to take in the breathtaking views that are all around the waterways of Tin Can Bay. You will often see some of our aquatic stars including dolphins, turtles and other seabound critters.

You will have the opportunity to travel to other dragon boat centres to compete in regattas and meet other like-spirited people.

Weather permitting, the Club meets at the Yacht Club hardstand to put the boat in the water every Thursday at 3.30pm (during the summer) and every Sunday at 7.30am. Come and give it a go — you won’t be sorry you did!!

If you do decide to ‘take the plunge’ (pun intended), make sure you wear suitable clothing (that won’t mind getting damp), a hat, sunscreen and

sunglasses, and bring a water bottle.

The fishing training courses were a little down on numbers, so we ran several smaller sessions which allowed our presenters Ron Cox and Derek Andrews to go into more detail and for our other instructors to give one on one instruction.

All participants received a rod and a reel courtesy of funding from a grant from Fisheries Queensland and supplied by The Chandlery Bait & Tackle.

We ran several fishing training events at Norman Point and clubrooms for members of the public, held our month-end awards BBQ and Master Caster social event, staged our annual general meeting, ran our monthly two-day fishing event, and our fundraising stall at the Tin Can Bay Markets, plus had a visit by our local state MP Tony Perrett.

N FRIDAY 29 September 2023, 28 club members met at Gardiner Fisheries to prepare the convoy to head off to the Waddy Point Group Campground on Fraser Island.

The group travelled in 12 vehicles with the trip to Orchard Beach being uneventful which is always a great result. It was great to see the Barron

family join the club and enjoy the weekend.

The Waddy Point Group Campground was a great venue for this social trip with the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service providing great facilities. We had a couple of late scratchings, the lucky devils got tickets to the NRL grand final!

Weather Conditions Weather conditions were sensational for the weekend with mainly fine sunny conditions and light winds, a few showers on the way up the beach to Orchard Beach made for very pleasant beach driving conditions, 2 hours before the low tide.

No Competition While this was a social trip with no formal competition, the competitive spirit of the members is always present with some good catches being photographed to share with the club members who were unable to attend.

EN’S HEALTH IS IN CRISIS. Men are dying on average 4.5 years earlier than women, and for largely preventable reasons. We can all take action to live healthier, happier, and longer lives.

A growing number of men – around 10.8M globally – are facing life with a prostate cancer diagnosis.

Globally, testicular cancer is the most common cancer among young men.

And across the world, one man dies by suicide every minute of every day, with males accounting for 69% of all suicides. These are shocking statistics that have got to change.

November is the month to dive into making the circular economy bigger and reducing waste impact with the Planet Ark National Recycling Week from 13-19 November.

Gympie Regional Council has numerous resources on its website to help you know your waste from recyclable items including a comprehensive fact sheet on what goes in your waste and recycling bins, a handy quick guide on what to do with everyday unwanted items, and also some great recycling hints including the ‘why’ questions such as: “Why can’t plastic bags go in the recycling bin? Because plastic bags will get caught in the machinery at the Material Recovery Facility.”

E ARE A GROUP of concerned residents who find ourselves compelled to speak out, not only because of the recent controversial planning of the ‘This is Livin Fest’ at the local Sports Club carpark but also because of the disappointing and downright nasty way some community members have chosen to respond to those who’ve dared to voice their concerns.

What’s particularly alarming is the bullying behaviour and manipulation that has arisen in response to the petition we submitted. Our goal was simple; to engage in open dialogue about an event that impacts us all. However what we received in return were unfair accusations and attempts to muddy the true essence of our message. This goes beyond the acceptable bounds of community debate and falls into the realm of intimidation and character assassination.

It’s important to clarify that we’re not opposed to community events or festivities.

Quite the contrary. We suggested alternative venues that could accommodate even larger crowds, align better with the goals of a sports and recreation club. And mitigate the consistent disturbances that residents have been enduring. Yet we were dismissed and worse publicly derided. Our neighbours have faced allegations and insults merely for seeking a reasonable solution.

It should also be noted that the issue of noise and disturbances isn’t a one-off. This

has been a weekend ordeal for the families living near the Sports Club. It’s neither fair or sustainable for the residents to bear the brunt of these disruptions week in and week out. We question what message this sends about our community values. Aren’t we all supposed to be neighbours who look out for one another?

If we can’t discuss our collective concerns in a respectful forum, then something vital in our community has been lost.

We call upon the council, the Sports Club management, and our fellow community members to engage in a respectful dialogue that doesn’t involve slinging mud, spreading false narratives, or intimidating those who speak up.

Decisions like the planning of major events should be made transparently, respecting everyone’s rights and concerns. We hope this letter serves as a catalyst for constructive conversation and leads to decisions that respect the dignity and well being of all residents.

Let’s put an end to the bullying and mocking, let’s be neighbours and let’s work collectively for a future that leaves no room for divisiveness but fosters unity and respect.

T

HE BARN OWL’S gorgeous heartshaped facial disc is a delight to see if you’re lucky enough to come across one of these elusive hunters of the night.

The most widespread of Australia’s owls, the barn owl roosts in hollow logs, caves, or dense trees, and is usually seen alone or in pairs.

Their preferred habitat is open, dry country and they dine on small mammals, rodents, and birds, and some insects, frogs, and lizards.

Due to their love of the common house mouse, barn owls often die from poisoning when they ingest a mouse or rat that has eaten poison left out by humans.

They have exceptional hearing and the design of the facial disc means even the slightest sound is channelled toward the ears, allowing the owl to detect prey even in utter darkness and to hunt with complete silence.

Barn owls mate for life and build a nest generally in hollows in a tree.

The female incubates the eggs, but both parents tend to the young.

UR PLANT OF THE MONTH is Sophora fraseri, known as Brush Sophora.

Sophora is a small sparsely branched shrub that grows to 1-2 metres. It has a weeping habit with soft grey foliage and pretty yellow pea type flowers.

Rainbow Beach Learning Community Our October activities have been a great way to start Term 4 and have included a cruise from Carlo Point with Dolphin Cruises, building remotecontrolled vehicles with Curtis from the Gympie Library, creating stunning ink paintings under the guidance of local artist Vicky Miles, and teambuilding marble games.

We also ran a market morning where the children learned how to create a budget for meals for a family with $200 to spend, and whatever money was left over they spent on a variety of items donated by the other children.

Local drama teacher Sheryl Anderson commenced drama classes which will be an amazing opportunity for the young people to be able to express themselves and find their ‘inner actor.’ Who knows, it might inspire them to pursue an acting career in the future!

In November we will be holding a camp at Dunethin Rock Scout Campground on the banks of the Maroochy River for families from the Gympie and Rainbow Beach Learning Communities, where they will enjoy swimming and kayaking, bush craft, a visit to the Sunshine Castle at Bli Bli, an outdoor movie, and talent night.

We would like to invite everyone along to the next Community Centre Coolaflix night on Saturday 11 November, with food available from 5.30pm and the wonderful Australian movie ‘Oddball’ starting at 6pm.

Pizzas, sausage rolls, cakes, biscuits, zooper doopers, cold drinks and bags of lollies will be available for sale, with profits going towards providing activities at the upcoming camp.

We have received an update from Jan Waters of TurtleCare to say that since April, cans and bottles placed in the recycling bins near the shelter at the bottom of the coloured stairs have raised $400 to help their volunteers care for turtles in our local area.

Many people have written messages of support on Topsy’s (who is also known as Tracey the trash turtle!) shell which is a great encouragement to the Learning Community families and volunteers who regularly volunteer to empty the bins.

The Pantry is also continuing to receive donations of food from Woolies Cooloola, Rainbow Beach and Tin Can Bay IGA, and Ed’s Beach Bakery which have meant that our hampers are truly great value.

Hampers must be pre-ordered and can be delivered by our amazing volunteers if recipients are unable to drive to Rainbow Beach themselves.

Flyers with details of dates that the hampers are available and contact details can be sourced from the Tin Can Bay Centrelink office, the Rainbow Beach Community Centre, and the Tin Can Bay Library.

The Centrelink office also has a number of vouchers available for local families or singles who are genuinely struggling to receive a hamper free-of-charge. To order a hamper for yourself or someone who needs a helping hand, you can contact us via text to 0413 135 867 or hop onto the Rainbow Beach Community Pantry Facebook page and send us a message.

Our ‘Cooking on a Budget’ class held on Wednesday 25 October at the Rainbow Beach Community Centre with Gabriella Field, Country Kitchens Facilitator for the Tin Can Bay branch of the QCWA, was a great success and enjoyed by all who attended.

Those who attended the free class learned how to make Rainbow Frittata Muffins and a Mediterranean Chicken Bowl, finishing with Apple Crumble for dessert. They also received an apron, bag and recipe book to keep.

We have recently been blessed with the donation of a large freezer by the Tin Can Bay Lions’ Club and are hoping to soon have a base at Cooloola Cove or Tin Can Bay where we can distribute hampers and frozen meals to local residents.

Pindari Life Ltd, a local charity based in Gympie, provides the pantry with governance and support.

Community Pantry I am sure that all of us are experiencing the effects of the increased cost of rent, power, and food in recent months.

To help local families who are finding it hard to cover the cost of their grocery bill, the Community Pantry is now able to provide frozen meals and meat from Foodbank in Brisbane in addition to our fortnightly hampers that are available to Cooloola Cove, Tin Can Bay and Rainbow Beach residents for $10 each.

That Winning Feeling If you haven’t heard already, we are excep onally honoured and grateful to confirm the rumours around town are true!

The morning of the 1st of September Jus n received an email: “We are thrilled to inform you that IGA Rainbow Beach is a finalist Audrey featured on in the Gympie Chamber of Commerce 2023 Business Awards, in the Clare Agents website category of Business of the Year.”

Fast forward to awards night…

The Pavilion hall is lit with fairy lights hanging from the ceiling, the dinner tables are decorated with pearl white cloth and tea candles, and sweet melodies from an ensemble of violinists fill the room with calm.

Well done Gympie Chamber of Commerce! The venue was excep onal!

The women dressed in flawless silks down to their ankles, some with sparkles, and the men in perfectly ironed suits.

I hope this will paint a picture of how beau ful the atmosphere was.

We all sat around the table ea ng dinner, drinking wine, watching the awards ceremony, wai ng eagerly for our category…ever so pa ently.

“The award we’ve all been wai ng for… The Business of the Year award!”

The roar coming from our table was filled with pure joy. Jus n and Bernie head to the stage to collect the award…. My favorite part of the night- Burnie’s eureka moment on stage with her hand in a fist as if to say YESS! Classic!

We are absolutely stoked to be considered for this award let alone win the damn thing!

The support and admira on we have received fro the locals is heartwarming, and what a great chip for the town, yet another business award for a Rainbow Beach business.

To close, a special acknowledgement to Mitch who wrote an excep onal proposal, Jus n who spoke incredibly at his interview with the board of judges, Kristy and Kylie who pour their heart and soul into the opera on of the business, and of course every individual team member prides themselves on their work.

We cannot succeed without our incredible team!

In store this month Christmas décor has hit the shelves ready for the fes ve early birds, you will start to see things such as pavlovas, prawns, and hams in the catalogue along with a wide range of entertainment foods.

A hot new product range served out of our deli from Cuisinecorp, an Australian company based in NSW. We are currently stocking an assortment of curries that taste amazing!

Lastly, you may have seen Jus n and Ma a li le less business like on the Rainbow Beach Blokes Facebook page, don’t forget to order your copy of next year’s calendar so you can look at the IGA’s store models for the whole month. We will definitely have one hanging up in the office to giggle at all day.
