Have you seen the gorgeous new murals at the Rainbow Beach school? I absolutely love them, what a beautiful addition to our amazing local school. I thought I might take this opportunity to start sharing some things about my little family. My husband Steve and I got married at the marina in Tin Can Bay nearly ten years ago (after being together
for eight years prior to that) and one day I’ll dig out some of our wedding pics and bore you all with them! For now, here is a small blast from our past - this is Steve and I in 2010 up at the sand blow. My goodness we look disgustingly young. Feel free to enjoy a giggle at our expense with this dorky pic! But Carlo is as spectacular as ever and remains one of our favourite places in the whole world. Such a magical spot, it always stuns me no matter how many times I visit. Until next month.

E ALL KNOW it’s coming into warmer weather when sections of the Tin Can Bay Road break out into a blanket of yellow. While the spectacular golden carpet backdropped by the deep green forest is a joy to drive by, unfortunately the Coreopsis lanceolate; or commonly known as Lanceleaf Tickseed because their seeds look like ticks, is not native to Australia and is considered an invasive exotic species. But they do make for a blooming bee-utiful sight! Lanceleaf Tickseed are drought tolerant, longblooming and happy to grow in poor, sandy or rocky soil. Their widespread coverage has most likely been aided with seed dispersal along the roadside by mowing activities, wind, water and whatever eats them. They are part of the sunflower family and this would explain their visual beauty when out in bloom. If you are wanting to get a happy snap amongst the flowers then be mindful of where you park and keep an eye out for anything that may be underneath so you don’t get a surprise!
T 1045HRS on Thursday 11 November the Rainbow Beach RSL Sub-Branch will be conducting a ceremony at the Cenotaph to mark Remembrance Day. Remembrance Day, which was originally called Armistice Day, commemorated the formal end of hostilities for the Great War (World War 1). The signing of the armistice occurred on 11 November 1918 – the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. Red poppies are worn on Remembrance Day to remember those who died during a war. Remembrance Day in Australia is dedicated to Australians who have died as a result of war, particularly World War 1. All members of the local community and visitors are invited to attend the ceremony at the Cenotaph to pay their respects. As this year is the 100th Anniversary of the Royal Australian Air Force, we are honoured to have two guest speakers being Wing Commander Justin Cockroft from RAAF BASE Amberley and Councillor Dolly Jensen from Gympie Regional Council. Staying healthy after storms A
S WE CONTINUE into storm season, the Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service’s Public Health Unit has provided advice on staying healthy in the event of storms, floods, or loss of power. Environmental Health Services Manager Greg Bennett said: “There are many considerations, some requiring attention well after the storm has passed, such as managing mould.”
Food safety
risks and contact the local Council for information relating to specific sites.
• Throw away:
– Refrigerated food that has been left unrefrigerated (or above 5°C) for more than four hours.
– Frozen food if the power to the freezer has been off for more than 48 hours for a full freezer and more than 24 hours for a half full freezer.
Contact Council about any changes to normal waste collection, and for specific disposal advice.
General considerations
– Food that has an unusual odour, colour or texture.
Pools, spas and water tanks
• Young children, the elderly, pregnant women, people with chronic diseases – such as diabetes and kidney disease are more prone to infections and should consider avoiding flood water and mud.
– Food that has started to defrost should be eaten as soon as possible. It should not be re-frozen.
• Wash your hands with soap and water or a hand sanitiser after contact with damaged materials, flood water or mud, going to the toilet and before preparing or consuming food.
Recreational water use
After a flood disaster you may need to restore your pool, spa or water tank to make it safe to use again. It is likely that pools, spas and water tanks after being contaminated with floodwater will contain harmful germs and may become breeding sites for mosquitoes.
• Only use generators in well ventilated areas preferably outside – otherwise there will be a build-up of toxic exhaust fumes. • Wear protective clothing such as long sleeves, long pants, hats, gloves and rubber boots. • Watch out for snakes, spiders, and mosquitoes. • Treat and cover any wounds. Seek medical advice about tetanus vaccination if you haven’t had a tetanus course in the last five years.
Heavy rainfall events can wash contaminants present in the catchments into waterways and can overwhelm the capacity of sewage treatment infrastructure causing sewage to discharge directly into waterways. Exposure to affected waterways, such as beaches, rivers, creeks, ponds, and lakes, can therefore present an elevated health risk in the days following a flood event. Using waterways for recreational activities after heavy rainfall can lead to gastrointestinal illness through accidental consumption of water and ear, eye and skin infections. Be guided by any signs around waterways indicating

HE COOLOOLA COAST Local Ambulance Committee held our Flower Show last month after having to cancel the previous year due to Covid restrictions. We were uncertain of the response given the current circumstances but were overwhelmed with the turnout both in terms of the number of attendees as well as the number of plant, flower and photography entries. The stall holders also responded in magnificent fashion and there was a wonderful variety of crafts, cakes, plants and flower arrangements on sale. Many thanks to all involved. The children from the local schools took part in a colouring-in competition and it was also very encouraging to see a number of floral and plant entries from the young ones. During the morning, the crowd was entertained by the Cooloola Coast Ukulele Group and the Coolabay Choir. Both groups performed favourite tunes
and songs and contributed to a vibrant, happy atmosphere. The champions in each section were Lyn Call for Floral Work, T Fear for Roses, Beris Sonter for Cut Flowers, K Horne for Container Plants, with the Juniors prize going to K Sheridan. Cathy Reed was awarded the champions prize for the Open Photography section. The committee was most appreciative of
the assistance provided by the ladies from the CWA with the morning and afternoon teas. We would also like to thank the Tin Can Bay Craft Club and the Tin Can Bay Quilters for their very generous donations. The show was our most successful to date and a big thank you goes to all those people who took the time to place an entry in the show and who came along on the day to support us.

AKE SURE YOU pay attention to the new 80km/h speed limit that starts at Goomboorian Hall and ends before the overtaking lanes. It extends on the 80km/h zone past Goomboorian truck stop to past the new Ross Creek Service Station. Warning for readers to not get caught! And have you also noticed the new widened centre line on Tin Can Bay Road? This is a small part of the current plan to widen the road and provide passing lanes in the hope of relieving driver frustrations. Fingers crossed the same plans make their way to the road to Rainbow soon enough.

Cooloola Seniors Expo a huge success Theresa Fear – Secretary Cooloola Cove Residents and Friends Inc

HE COOLOOLA SENIORS Expo was held on Saturday 23 October at the Cooloola Coast Bowls Club in Tin Can Bay. Approximately 300 people turned out to visit the Expo. There were 24 different exhibitors with information ranging from services available (not just to seniors), to social activities, health and rehab, sports and community groups. Outside, the wonderful Cars N Coffee members provided a display of 18
cars, with the Kombi Van proving popular. Kidz Biz and Barbara Rooks Family Day Care provided the welcome sign at the entrance to the expo. The sign was a great way to enter and a great talking point (as well as making it onto a lot of Facebook pages). Tin Can Bay Lions Club provided support during the event. State member for Gympie, Tony Perrett opened the expo which was made possible through funding via Queensland Seniors Month – Social Connections administered by Council of the Aging Queensland on behalf of the Queensland Government, and

This expo was hosted by Cooloola Cove Residents and Friends Inc with the aim of ensuring Cooloola Coast residents are aware of the services available to them and the opportunities available to make a connection with the community.

AINBOW BEACH Surf Life Saving Club ran a Surf Rescue Certificate and Bronze Medallion course last month with ten enthusiastic participants. These courses allow members of all ages to move from observers on the beach to full Surf Life Saving patrolling members. The week-long course involved both theory and practical examinations where participants were tested on their beach and surf skills, plus rescue scenarios along with completing their first aid.

The club will be conducting an External Bronze Medallion course beginning in December. The format of this version of the course allows participants to complete the theory part of the course in their own time and come along on selected weekends to complete their practical training. ETER AND I HAVE sold our house and we are moving to Bundaberg. It is with mixed feelings that we look back on our 28 years here in Rainbow Beach. It may be a much-used and time-weary cliché but, oh so, so true. We have some lovely friends that we will be sad to leave behind; and, yet we are excited about our new beginnings. We arrived in 1993 with 3 of our children – 2 of them in primary school – to open a fruit and vegie store.

After coming from a very active community life in Gayndah, we jumped in feet first to the Chamber of Commerce and the school P&C Association. Peter was also an inaugural member of the Rainbow Beach Lions Club. When the Business and Tourism Association was formed, Peter took great delight in helping set up the tracks through the Cooloola National Park for the annual 4WD Rally. With his experience in TV antenna installation, Peter was asked by a couple of the boat hire companies to improve the TV reception on their boats. After trialling
Farewell to Rainbow Beach many of the marine antennas on the market, Peter concluded that there were no suitable antennas for the Rainbow Beach/Fraser Island/Tin Can Bay areas. He then designed one that worked extremely well in the local area. Thus, the Saturn Antenna was born. Caravanners coming into the caravan parks in town soon learnt that this “boat” antenna worked a treat for them in this area – and around Australia. This began our 22 years of travelling to boat and caravan shows around the countryside. We always felt “Coming Home” to Rainbow Beach was sometimes the best part of our travels. Meantime, I enjoyed returning to my chosen career with a few years of Supply Teaching in Tin Can Bay and Rainbow Beach. Funnily enough, Tin Can Bay school stopped ringing for me to come in for a day’s teaching when I told them I was unavailable because I was in Cairns/Albury/Melbourne/Perth. Thank you, all the residents and visitors, for your support in reading the articles I wrote for this paper during our travelling times. I enjoyed learning and writing about the small towns that we passed through over the years and it was so much fun to write for our two themed years - the Bakery Run and the Pub Crawl. The Saturn Antenna van was pictured outside many Pubs and Bakeries around Australia. We have seen Rainbow Beach grow from a sleepy beach holiday place to a bustling, holiday destination. When we arrived, there were no church buildings, no Police Beat, no ambulance station nor Community Centre. Now, Rainbow Beach has all these facilities along with a new Fire and SES centre. Wow, Rainbow, you have matured. But this is not really goodbye. It is truly SEE YA. We will be back for visits. Peter and Margaret Grant (Saturn Antennas)

IN CAN BAY RSL was recently the venue for what locals have called “the wedding of the decade”, the marriage of Peter and Bobbie Gilfoyle. RSL stalwarts Peter and Bobbie celebrated the occasion in style surrounded by family and friends, many of whom were RSL members. The wedding ceremony was conducted in perfect conditions under the trees behind the RSL Hall, with the sparkling
waters of Tin Can Bay in the background. The celebrations then moved seamlessly to the RSL facilities for the wedding reception where a delicious three course spread was prepared and served by RSL volunteers lead by Viv Holland. As Bobbie said, “It was a great day that Peter and I really enjoyed, but it was the volunteers from the RSL that really made it special, especially Viv.” Viv said that she was pleased to help make the wedding special. “They are my friends who have stood by me for all the years I’ve been here. I’m so glad they had
such a wonderful wedding.” Mike and Chrissie, who perform under the tag “Just Us”, and are also RSL volunteers, provided tremendous musical entertainment to take the wedding to the next level of enjoyment for everyone who attended. Mike said, “We are all part of the RSL family here in Tin Can Bay. We’re happy to be able to help out such brilliant people as Peter and Bobbie on their special day.” Well we appreciate your efforts Viv, Mike, Chrissie and team. Thank you for your service!

Creative Cuts Festival of Small Halls - Summer Tour 2021

Simply Classical
brings a touch of Schubert to their November concert I
N THESE UNCERTAIN times you have to be an idealist, foolhardy or an incorrigible optimist to go ahead and organise a concert weeks or months ahead. Organisers of Simply Classical have had their share of trying to overcome obstacles in previous concerts, and it has made them a bit more cautious. This is why it was this time decided to “keep it in the family” geographically speaking. What was unearthed in their own backyard will nevertheless be a delight for their prospective audience. The Gympie Strings under the leadership of Alex Pattri have become ever more ambitious and have done their own unearthing with a movement of Schubert’s quartet op. Nr. 29, no fancy name, and they have their work cut out with this one. It has a mysterious, almost eerie beginning

and then the four different instruments battle it out who has the most to contribute. This is one of several Schubert items, which give the concert its theme: “A Touch of Schubert”. Another one is a piano sonata by the same composer, played by Hadassah Covert. Hadassah is in her final year of school and heading for grade 8 piano exam, so she will be very well rehearsed. Alex Pattri and Carmen Smith, who is the conductor of the Cooloola Community Orchestra and herself a superb violinist, are going to play a violin duet and that won’t be a beginner’s piece. Emma Allan, herself a member of the Gympie Strings, is also the CCO’s principal flautist and is teaming up with a couple of other wind instrumentalists for an item.
“Gift of Song” is temporarily reduced to four singers, without any loss of their artistic qualities, and one of their three items is also a Schubert song. There will be a speech item again. Well known Gympie identity Gay Lohse will be reciting a poem with a personal history. One import from just a bit further South is opera singer Louise Findley, who will sing the glorious “Exsultate Jubilate” by Mozart. Cooloola Coast club celebrates Probus Month Katrina van den Brenk
O
CTOBER IS DEEMED to be Probus Month for Probus Clubs all over the world and we’d planned to have a picnic and games day at Norman Point on 1 October - Probus Day - but bad weather intervened. Did you see the Probus flag displayed in Tin Can Bay, or Smithfield Street in Gympie lit in Probus blue during the month? Our members were disappointed with the cancellation of our own event but did however band together to attend activities such as the Tin Can Bay Branch’s High Tea at Cathy House for funding bursaries for local school students, and also a morning tea in the Wesleyan Church Hall on Southside. At the latter, entertainment was provided by singer Brad Sorensen, keeping those
attending tapping their toes. That event was to raise funds for the Community Bus. We don’t raise funds ourselves, but we do like to support other community groups. Glenda Johannessen was inducted as a new member at our October meeting and warmly welcomed. We look forward to welcoming more new members, people of semi-retirement or retirement age who want to make new friends, expand their interests and enjoy their retirement. Probus is all about Friendship, Fellowship and Fun. Meetings are held each second Monday of the month at 2pm at the Sandcastle Motel in Tin Can Bay, and include a break for afternoon tea and a chat. ELALEUCA NODOSA is commonly known as the prickly-leaved paperbark and flowers in spring and summer, often after rain. It is a shrub of the Myrtaceae family growing thick, papery bark, usually in sandy soil, to a height of 2m x 2.5 across. The stiff linear leaves are rather variable in size and shape, but usually 3cm long, tapering to a point. The flowers are cream to yellow and arranged in dense heads on the ends of branches. Each head is up to 1.5cm in diameter and contains up to 20 groups of flowers in threes. It blooms best in a sunny position but will tolerate shade.

Fruits that follow are woody, cup shaped capsules, usually in tight, globular clusters along the stems. Annual light pruning will encourage a bushy shape. This endemic shrub is an important source of pollen for bees. City Farm Nursery is located opposite the Community Centre at 4 Amity Place. E HAVE BEEN accepting essential items for some Christmas hampers, as well as our usual help from Big W in Gympie who wrap donated presents mainly for children. There are still certain areas in Western Queensland that have had another poor season with many families really struggling, so that is why we let School of Distance Education coordinate our donations to those most in need. If anyone can help we really need Christmas cakes or puddings, fruit mince tarts and any other Christmassy items including kids toys. We have just purchased 36 Christmas cakes and will make more to start proceedings. Colleen from Cooloola has also bought a box of Lions Christmas cakes. Thank you again to Wayne Kerle who continues to coordinate our can and bottle collections, and to all our other bottle and can donors including Kingfisher Caravan Park, Tin Can Bay Yacht Club, Tin Can Bay Country Club, Tin Can Bay Holiday Park, Carlo Point Caravan Park, and Bay Auto. To all the shops with our
tin collections, thank you for your continued support. Another big thank you to Leena and Steve from Tin Can Bay who continue to drop food off for our hampers. Any food items can be left at Cooloola Coast Realty just near Woolworths, so with all your support hopefully we can send some Christmas cheer to the bush again. Our donations this month have been $1000 to Fencing For Fires and $1000 to Centa Care for Mental Health in Longreach.

OOLOOLA COVE WHEELIE WALKERS are rolling, with five members, meeting at 8.30am on Mondays and Fridays at the bus stop on Nautilus Drive, outside the shopping centre in Cooloola Cove. We then enjoy coffee afterwards. Our new Heart Foundation Walking group evolved after my talk at the August Cooloola Coast Probus meeting, with several members there expressing great interest. We roll along wheeling the walkers ahead of us, at a slow pace for less than half an hour. This morning that staff member had to take the police through to YOUR Doctor to discuss a patient, that they knew, who took their own life last night. Or maybe that staff member recently received bad news of their own.

HAVE HAD THE privilege of working with Doctors, Nurses and Administration staff for many years, and this following piece is inspired by my observations of the day-to-day running of our practice, over a number of years, that was seeing about 1500 patients a week. Please let me address the elephant in the room...the number one complaint in any medical practice is...waiting too long. I really wish you didn’t have to wait. I wish it could be as easy as booking your appointment, turning up, and being seen at the precise time you booked. Hey, sometimes that actually happens! My wish is that some people would lose the “customer” mentality when in a professional healthcare precinct.
You are not waiting for a meal in a restaurant.
That staff member, being as professional as they can, is only human, and is trying to hold it together while you are yelling at him or her because you have to get to golf.
You are not standing in line at the supermarket. Even though you might only need a prescription or a sick note for work (it’ll only take two minutes!”), look around the room. You are surrounded by patients, not customers and you are waiting for a Doctor. Some patients might be there for the same reason as you, but some of them are there because they have serious and unpredictable health problems. That pregnant lady sitting opposite you? She’s about to see YOUR Doctor and be told her baby (who stopped kicking two days ago) will be stillborn. Perhaps the last person to see your Doctor was told they have cancer and stayed a bit longer because they had oh so many questions, and your Doctor answered them, even looked up help sites, and waited until they composed themselves. Earlier in the day, a child, in the safety

of your Doctor’s office, confided that they are being sexually abused by a family friend. Or maybe a patient went into cardiac arrest – and left in an ambulance. In a busy practice it is not unusual to have several ambulance callouts in a day, sometimes all at once. Would you honestly expect your Doctor to say, “Okay, you’ll need to make another appointment, I haven’t got time...”? Believe me, if it was you in the same chair, YOUR DOCTOR WOULD SPEND THE TIME WITH YOU TOO. Sometimes staff members may seem a little short or forget to smile. That staff member was there when that lady got the news that she was finally pregnant after years of trying.
Sometimes when patients find themselves in the safe environment of their Doctor’s office, all kinds of things can come to the surface. On any given day we will deal with physical health issues, mental health issues, and issues of child and domestic and substance abuse. That can’t be rushed. And Admin staff cannot always know what is going on behind the Doctor’s door. Cooloola Coast General Practice has a zero tolerance policy of abuse and aggressive behaviour towards our Staff and Doctors. Our Doctors, Nurses, Admin, they do their best in sometimes difficult circumstances. THEY. DO. THEIR. BEST. And they always deserve your respect. ALWAYS.

20 Patrolled Beach Swim in the flags in front of the Surf Lifesaving tower. Walk via the steps or walkway near the lookout and surf club, or drive onto Griffin Esplanade. 4WD beach access begins here.
Coloured Sands Visit the patrolled beach, near the surf tower or the lookout to see the 70 plus colours in our cliffs. From town, walk south 1km along the beach - for best colours 4WD or tour a further 9km. Remember it is a gazetted road.
Carlo Sand Blow Park at the top of Cooloola Drive, and walk 600m up from the car park or bushwalk about 2km from the National Parks Office for spectacular views of the Coloured Sands, Double Island Point, Tin Can Bay Inlet and hang gliders.

Middle Rock When tides and conditions allow, the walk to Middle Rock and back is a beautiful way to check out the Coloured Sands. From here, vehicle permits are required and dogs are prohibited.
Inskip Point This peninsula is the gateway to Fraser Island, a favourite fishing spot and pet friendly camping grounds for generations. Only 15 minutes drive (2WD) from Rainbow Beach.
Freshwater Picnic Area Walk to and swim in nearby Freshwater Lake, picnic or BBQ at the beautiful shady day-use area, found before Freshwater Road reaches Teewah Beach. 4WD only.
Tin Can Bay Foreshore
Drive to Bymien Picnic Area (2WD) via 3km gravel on the Freshwater Road, (off Rainbow Beach Road). It’s a 40 minute walk to reach the cool waters of Lake Poona through beautiful rainforest and carrol (grey myrtle) scrub.
Walk 4km from Crab Creek to Norman Point, over picturesque bridges, signage of flora and fauna, through mangroves, playgrounds and outdoor gyms. It is mostly flat and very safe for children on wheels. Look out for 137 species of birds.

Tin Can Bay Wildflower Walk
Only 7km from town towards Gympie, with 2 waterholes, boardwalks, bridges and history – do read the sign and spot the creatures. Always cool on the hottest of days.
Rainbow Beach Headland A look out, a viewing platform, 2 playgrounds, a skatepark, BBQs and picnic facilities. See the whales from here in season and watch the surfers out the front. Take a photo at the Cherry Venture propeller.
Double Island Point Access via the 4WD only Great Beach Drive or Freshwater Track. See dolphins, whales (seasonal), manta rays, turtles and walk up to our historic lighthouse. It has the longest break in Australia -when the swell lines up.

Boat Ramps You can launch your boat at Norman Point and Crab Creek in Tin Can Bay or Carlo Point and Bullock Point near Rainbow Beach. All except Bullock Point offer toilet and scenic picnic facilities.
Feed Wild Dolphins at Norman Point Arrive from 7am, after feeding (fees apply), the dolphins leave for another day. A picturesque peninsula with public pool, playground, sailing, boat ramp and pontoon and picnic facilities.
Carlo Point For spectacular sunsets over the water, take a cheese platter or fish and chips and watch the day’s end. This favourite fishing spot is only 3 km from Rainbow Beach.

HE PICTURESQUE COASTAL landscapes of the Cooloola and Inskip Recreation Areas attract many people from all corners of the country and as we welcome the warmer weather, more and more people will flock to our shores. Here are some useful tips to help minimise the impact to the environment during your stay:

Dispose of waste properly - Pack it in, pack it out. - Plan your meals to reduce food packaging. The less packaging you bring in with you, the less rubbish you have to carry out. - Inspect your campsite and day-use area for rubbish (including micro-rubbish) or spilled foods before you leave.

Plan ahead and prepare - Research the park you plan to visit - Read the park’s web page or brochure to find out about location, weather conditions, and possible activities then discuss with your travel group. - Choose an appropriate park and activity for your group and allow plenty of time to travel and camp.

Travel and camp on durable surfaces - Keep to the walking tracks and camp in designated camping areas to help prevent trampling young seedlings, compacting fragile soils and destroying habitats and causing erosion.
Leave what you find - Leave natural areas natural, as you found them, for others to discover and enjoy after you. - Never collect rocks, leaves, shells, feathers, fossils, or plants. - Avoid disturbing or touching cultural sites such as rock art or middens as they are protected too. - Leave what you find, as you found it. Minimise campfire impacts - Build your campfire only where permitted (note that fires are prohibited on Teewah Beach). - Even small impacts from campfires can affect the natural appearance of camping and day-use areas. - Where fire is permitted, always bring your own clean-milled firewood. Never collect wood or kindling from the surrounding area – everything in the park is protected. Respect wildlife - Avoid feeding or disturbing wildlife. Parks and forests provide a refuge for animals that are threatened by habitat loss, invasive species and pollution. Respect wildlife to help in their protection, rather than add to their survival challenges.

Respect their wishes, stay safe, and follow any directions on signage in the park. - We also share natural places with other visitors, who may have similar or very different recreational needs from our own. This is why areas within parks and forests have been set aside for different recreational uses. Always respect other visitors and follow “outdoor etiquette” so that your behaviour doesn’t affect others’ enjoyment of nature.

S WE COME TO the middle of Term 4 and we are planning to transition our youngest children into Prep and our Year 6 students off to High School, I want to take the opportunity to reflect on a couple
of the many positives that I see at Rainbow Beach State School. For some time now, we have had a number of programs that are aimed at supporting young children and their families prior to Prep enrolment.
These programs, that include Playgroup and KindyLinQ , have continued to grow and have been a real success. they have offered support and guidance to families and ensured the school is well prepared for the support the needs of the

Over the years we have had some truly dedicated teachers deliver learning opportunities with our young children and partner with parents to support their child’s learning. Miss C and Ms Margetts have done a remarkable job in recent years. And for more than a decade now we have been very fortunate to have Miss Sarah working in this space. Her ongoing contribution to our school, students and families can never be underestimated. A highlight of these programs has been the community engagement and spirit that is evident throughout every session.

Tin Can Bay School News By Tin Can Bay P-10 School
COLOURING COMPETITION WINNER Over the September Spring break, the Cooloola Coast Ambulance Committee held their annual Flower Show. As in previous years, a colouring competition was held with Prep-Year 3 and Year 4-6 categories and Tin Can Bay P-10 State School was pleased to be able to submit over 60 entries. With many entries submitted, the competition was stiff but Kaylee Jensen triumphed in the Year 4-6 section. Keeping in theme with the Flower Show, the prize contained a gardening kit complete with seeds, a water bottle and activity booklet. Kaylee was very excited to be awarded her prize on parade and said, “Wow! I entered the competition because I felt the picture would look great with lots of colours in it. I love colours! I am really looking forward to helping my Mum in the garden now I have own set of gardening tools.” Congratulations Kaylee and a big thank you to the Cooloola Coast Ambulance Committee.

BUILDING SOLID PATHWAYS Who says school can’t be fun? Just ask the students at Tin Can Bay P-10 State School who are engaging in the Solid Pathways - STEM program (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). The program engages Aboriginal and Torres Strait students in Years 4-6 from across Queensland state schools with a focus on authentic, real-world challenges and current research designed to extend and ignite student interest and learning beyond the Australian Curriculum. This year we have three students who qualified for the program - Jarrod, Madison and Cleo. The students have actively engaged in the selection of their individual courses and collaborated with their teacher and other students using virtual classrooms in a real time, online learning platform. Although the STEM program integrates Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics skills into each course, this term Madison has chosen to focus on Mathematics while Jarrod and Cleo are focusing on Design Technology. “It’s great,” they said, “It’s really fun working on computers and doing different experiments. We highly recommend working virtually.” Congratulations to Jarrod, Madison and Cleo who each received a medallion for their outstanding work in Term 3.
YEAR 5/6 CAMP In October the Year 5 and 6 classes from Tin Can Bay P-10 State School, along with eight students and two teachers from Wolvi State School, headed off to camp at the Currimundi Recreation Centre. Over three days the students enjoyed rock climbing, canoeing, catapult building and firing, body boarding and team challenges. Rock climbing proved a popular choice with the students. They climbed up a vertical wall that was metres high and found that with a little determination and hard work, they could either reach the top of the wall or improve with each climb. On Wednesday it was time to board the bus and head home. The very tired but happy campers had an absolute blast, made new friends and importantly, learned a lot about themselves.

HE OPENING CEREMONY for the new Tin Can Bay Fishing Club outdoor barbecue and gazebo area was recently celebrated, with our local Member Tony Perrett MLA (Shadow Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry) as honoured guest. Tony has been an avid supporter of all recreational activities in our local area, and we wish to publicly thank him for his dedication and support. Our thanks go also to Councillor Glen Hartwig, Mayor of Gympie for his ongoing

Fishing, Boating & the Great Outdoors late afternoon and into the night) are the favoured feeding times for these maroon marauders. Mud crabs are now on the move with the warmer stormy weather. It’s the perfect time to have a few bob each-way by dropping a (properly rigged) crab pot or two up the creek while you are there trying to land a mangrove jack. For those who are new to mud crabbing, it’s important to remember that you must have your name and address on both the pot and float. Queensland law states you are allowed four pots per person, and 10 male crabs PER PERSON IN POSSESSION. It is not 10 crabs per day (and it’s illegal to take female mud crabs i.e “jennies” in Queensland). Minimum take size on male mud crabs is 15cm. There have been some good catches of summer whiting by those who pump some yabbies and fish the shallow sandbanks on the bigger rising tides. Fishing a rising tide after dark around the full moon can also be a super-productive option for catching bigger whiting. When they can be found, flathead have been readily pouncing on both small hardbodied lures and soft plastics cast into their usual feeding spots in the gutters and on the drop offs of the sand banks, preferably in the early morning before the boating traffic. There have been some quality fish including cod, tusk fish, tuna, and the occasional kingfish caught on the reefy areas in the bay and the reef fishing should continue to improve with the warmer weather. The fishermen who plan how, when and where to catch what according to the tides and weather are the ones who seem to be successful. In saying that, take whatever opportunity you can to get out onto the water and have a try. The productive days are called fishing, the unproductive ones which are still enjoyable, are called boating.

The entire site was burnt by wildfire in the summer of 2019/20. This site is only one of five sites proposed to be built inside the national park.

Householders have a responsibility under the Public Health Regulation (Part 2, Division 2, 14-19) to prevent mosquitoes breeding on their property so make it a weekly habit to flush out mozzie breeding grounds. Mosquitoes can carry diseases such as Ross River Virus, Barmah Forest Virus, Dengue Fever and can also give your dog heartworm. Make sure there are no permanent water sources around the home by emptying containers, filling pot plant saucers with sand, keeping gutters clean, ensuring tank
openings are covered, and flushing out bird baths and pets’ water bowls regularly. You can also create a frog-friendly garden and keep fountains and ponds stocked with fish for a natural army of defence. Also protect yourself by having repellent on hand, wear long sleeved light colours and treat window/door screens to keep them away. If you do get a bite then resist the urge to scratch! Try using a refrigerated damp green tea bag or a crushed sweet basil leaf to soothe the area or dab on some aloe vera, hand sanitiser or even Listerine.

AST MONTH Cooloola Dragons members had the privilege of viewing a film produced by a New Zealand Pinkies Dragon Boat team, filmed over 12 months as they trained and prepared for a regatta in Auckland. Members of Pinkies Dragon Boat teams are all women who have survived breast cancer. The physical as well as mental mountain to climb has to be admired. The film demonstrated not only the determination and commitment to the physical side to their training but also the importance of the camaraderie within the team. Cooloola Dragons have always placed
great value in camaraderie within our team as well as physical fitness. To this end we are into training for our next regatta at Lake Kawana on 21 November. The Cooloola Dragons can be found in the RSL Hall every 3rd Saturday of each month at the Tin Can Bay Markets - in our Dragon’s Lair Cafe. Come to the Dragon’s Lair on market day and get your cooked hot breakfast or if you prefer, enjoy a coffee/tea and home cooked cake! UR GOLFING YEAR is drawing to a close with all championships finished for the year with the exception of medal events for Ladies Veterans and Men. Presentation of annual prizes will take place in December. Course maintenance of greens and fairways took place during October. Many social players have taken advantage of our course over the winter months, and we hope they will return to play in years to come.
Membership to our golf club can be made by talking to our friendly staff at the front counter of the Country Club where you will be given the appropriate documentation to complete. For a massive commitment to green jobs to reduce climate pollution and end poverty for millions; and climate reparations from wealthy countries to equip vulnerable nations for a better future. The unified ask of the climate movement is for “a commitment from the Federal Government/major parties for a national plan to slash climate pollution this decade with strong targets that at minimum match our key allies the United States, the United Kingdom and trading partners such as the European Union and Japan”. T THE RECENT community gettogether at the Church of the Good Shepherd, Doug Mather, manager of 91.5fm Cooloola Christian Radio, enthralled those who attended with some of his life experiences and his vision and hopes for the station. Doug took on the role of manager at 91.5fm in September last year, and since then he and wife Kate have given the station a new lease of life and demonstrated their ability to connect with our community including local schools, businesses and organisations.
Doug played bass guitar in many bands over the years and entertained the group with some of his favourite songs. A delicious meal was shared and then Doug answered questions about what the future of 91.5fm holds and how the station can bless and support the Cooloola Coast community. The station is a major sponsor of this year’s Gympie Christmas Lights Competition with some great prizes up for grabs so pencil in a date in your diary in December to come and check them out!
Doug has been on the organising committee for the recent Live & Local concerts which took place at venues at Rainbow Beach and in the Gympie region, providing a great opportunity to get a feel for what is happening in the music scene at a local level. The next event for the Rainbow Beach Christian Community will be Community Carols on Sunday 19 December at the Church of the Good Shepherd and everyone is invited to come along and join us in singing many of the traditional songs we know and love.
There will be a sausage sizzle happening from 5.30pm and carols will start at 6.30pm. Music will be provided by Cooloola Cove local Pam Graham, with the assistance from the Cooloola Cove Ukulele Group under the direction of Marilyn Russell. A variety of local singers will also help us retell the wonderful story of Christmas that has been passed down through the centuries. Sausages and candles will be available for a gold coin donation. E HAVE HAD smaller crowds at the Dolphin Centre compared with the previous month so we can breathe easy for a while. The smaller crowds are much more manageable especially with the Covid ruling of 1.5 metres between groups. Patch has really taken up the challenge and is bringing in quite big items found out in Snapper Creek. His latest gift was a large sponge weighing 8.5 kgs. This sponge was placed back in the water as it was alive and had several little crabs in it. We thought we returned it to a different area so he couldn’t pick it up again but YES, he retrieved it and expected that fish as a reward again. He has now become a show pony. Harmony is on sabbatical and has only visited one time in the last three weeks.

Ella, Aussie and Luna are constant visitors. Come on down while the crowds are less. We volunteers wear masks during the proceedings as we cannot always social distance. So if you cannot social distance, please wear a mask. This procedure is to keep you safe and the rest of the public safe. Remember if you are a resident of the area you are welcome to the Centre and have free admission, only paying for feeding if you wish to participate. Please indicate to the gate person that you are local and can produce some form of identification. We open at 7am and have viewing of the dolphins until around 7.45am. This gives visitors a chance to hear all about the history and attributes of our Australian Humpback Dolphins. Photographing is welcomed. See you there.

ITH ITS RESPLENDENT black and white plumage reminiscent of a dapper tuxedo, a pair of assertive eyebrows, and some natty whiskers, the willie wagtail (Rhipidura leucophrys) is our November bird of the month. A common, yet welcome resident of our region, the energetic and sprightly wagtail - which is in fact Australia’s largest fantail can not only be identified by its white belly and black back, but also by its distinctive call, often likened in the birding community to sounding like it’s singing out “sweet pretty creature”. Dining on a diet of insects, it does not let its small stature stop it from defending its territory against bigger birds, and can often be seen letting kookaburras and similar interlopers know who’s boss. Inquisitive by nature, they aren’t shy when it comes to humans, and will often

come up quite close to inspect whether or not we hairy bipeds have disturbed some worms or bugs as we walk along kicking up dirt, with the wagtail quick to spot and dive for juicy morsels near our feet. The wagtail’s nest is a work of art, as they carefully and skilfully weave grasses, then cover it with spiderwebs on the outside and line it with more grass, hair or fur. Both mum and dad incubate the eggs, and can often have four clutches in a single season, the elder kids being booted out to make way for the new chicks. Chirpy and friendly, they really are full of character, and deserve a few minutes of observation as they tirelessly flit around and make our beautiful Cooloola Coast even more full of life.
