I feel so fortunate to be able to do it all over again this month. And what a month October will be - as always we have so many amazing things happening in the region. Make sure you check out the CCLAC Flower Show on Saturday October 2 - it is for such a great cause, and looking at all those beautiful flowers has to be good for the soul right? The hugely popular Surfrider Association clean up weekend is being held from 15 October. Pack the surfboards, grab the esky and get the 4WD over to Double Island Point, for details see the article on the opposite page. Rainbow Beach SLSC hosts the Rainbow Beach Junior “Banjo Memorial” Nippers Carnival on October 23.

October is Seniors Month in Queensland and there are plenty of local activities on to celebrate. I hope you enjoy our new Bird of the Month feature that has been introduced this issue. So many of us in this region love our unique wildlife so it will be nice to learn a bit more about the incredible array of native birds we have. Let me know what you think. Also let me know your thoughts on a few of our topical issues - we have a suggestion that it is time to introduce a full-time police station to the town, and there is also the new portable toilet legislation that has been brought in at Teewah. Clean Up Double Island is on this month

T’S BACK! After sadly falling victim to Covid restrictions and the like over the past year or so, the hugely popular Clean Up Double Island camping weekend hosted by Sunshine Coast Surfrider Foundation is ON! Join them and several hundred other like minded individuals this October 15-17th. Clean Up Double Island is one of South East Queensland’s biggest beach clean up efforts, removing up to 2 tonnes of rubbish from the Cooloola Recreational Park of the Great Sandy National Park. This is a family friendly FREE event, with plenty of fun activities to get involved in over the course of the weekend, live music and a chance to win some great prizes too! All vehicle and camping permits will be provided to registrants, thanks to the generous support from the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Services. Please add all details correctly into the registration form, including vehicle rego, as this will ensure you have all the correct permitting needed for the event. The park is 4x4 access only. Seniors Month

Celebrating our sensational seniors

OUR FABULOUS SENIORS make a huge contribution to the Cooloola Coast region and deserve to be acknowledged. Through employment, caring, volunteering, grand-parenting, cultural and sporting pursuits, preserving our history, and guiding our future, seniors are vital to our community. There is so much to value and celebrate that what was previously Seniors Week has been extended from this year to encompass the whole month of October. Seniors Month will provide the opportunity for everyone to celebrate the essential roles older people play in our families and society. The theme for 2021 is “Social Connections”. During the month of October people of all ages, cultures, and abilities will connect through a series of inclusive events and activities. In short, it’s going to be a connect-fest! Beginning on October 1, which is the International Day of Older Persons, and ending on October 31, which is National Grandparents Day, the month is a great opportunity for community members of all ages to connect and appreciate our senior population. Although, of course, we all appreciate them every month! A Swell Six Days in LARC-Vs Jess Milne

HAT DO YOU get when you cross a truck with a boat? A LARC-V, or otherwise known as a Lighter Amphibious Resupply Cargo 5 Tonne. In service since the 1970s, these allpurpose vehicles offer excellent capability to resupply the Army and also aid in humanitarian and disaster relief efforts as they are not restricted by tides, therefore can operate 24/7 in beach operations. Did you know that LARC-Vs all have different names that are derived from previous operators? Roles onboard include No. 1 as the driver and No. 2 who guides from the back. Enter Exercise Surfing Penguin and the 35 Water Transport Squadron from Townsville to the shores of Rainbow Beach. Visitors and locals were able to see the LARC-Vs in action for almost a week in September during the Squadron’s certification training on watercraft in surf conditions. A double bonus was the use of a drone to capture the action that will be used to create training videos.

Under the watchful eye of Lead Instructor WO2 Gareth Chattington and Officer in Charge Lt Jessie Ries drills such as man overboard, fire onboard a craft, capsize and recovery operations should a craft break down in the surf provided invaluable training for instinctive responses from soldiers in the event of an emergency. Training with inflatable F470 Zodiacs was also conducted that left more than a few with soggy socks! Personnel had the pleasure of spotting a few dolphins, turtles, crabs and diving cormorants while on the water but thankfully no sharks. Another highlight was engaging with the younger generation with the distribution of Surfing Penguin stickers as mementos and

a look on the LARC-Vs when they were not in use. One member of the Squadron was also able to enjoy a rare treat during lunch: Private Lynette Khan had her sister Melissa and ten month old nephew Koa visit from Brisbane. With the high risk weather season running from November to February, Surfing Penguin prepares the Squadron to respond to severe weather incidents around Australia and internationally. They have assisted and responded on Operation

Honouring a Lifetime of Volunteering in Tin Can Bay I

T’S BEEN A long (long!) time in the making, but Bronco Jensen’s persistence has paid off with the official unveiling of the seat dedicated to his community-minded parents. Ron and Eve Jensen were hugely popular long-time locals of Tin Can Bay and spent

many hours volunteering and helping their beloved community via various clubs and projects when not working at the Endeavour Foundation. The gorgeous Jack and Jill style seat is a lovely testament to a caring couple who made a huge impact in their town.

It’s a great opportunity for our Nippers to compete on their home turf - and for us to show off our amazing town to the families flocking here to take part.

PRING HAS CERTAINLY made its welcome presence felt, which means it is time for the Cooloola Coast Ambulance Flower Show. A popular event on our local calendar, the show attracts clever and creative floral entries from competitors of all ages. The competition also includes both an Open and Junior photography section which will be well worth a look. Stalls, raffles, demonstrations, and plants for sale are all a part of the day.

Is it time for a full service Police Station in Rainbow Beach? Ian Nowell

Former police sergeant with 22 years of service, now retired risk manager, and over 20 years long service as a J.P. Qualified

AINBOW BEACH Police Beat was opened on 22 November 2006. At the launch it was stated the reason for its existence was due to rapid growth in the town. The population at that time was 999. The government must have taken into consideration the tourists visiting the area as the difference in permanent residents between the 2001 and 2006 census was one additional permanent resident over that 5 years. Some 14 years later, today, I believe that argument is even more relevant for an upgrade to a fully designated police station. The permanent population in 2020 in Rainbow Beach is conservatively estimated to be above 1,300 and growing, partly due to its desirability as a lifestyle and retirement location. Since that time the number of tourists flocking to the area has also increased considerably. Current data is not available at this time, however a Gympie Times article in December 2017 reported: “According to figures from Surf Life Saving Queensland, more than 212,000

set foot on the popular beach in 2016, a staggering 164% jump from 2012’s numbers. And things are not slowing down, either, with more than 203,000 people on the beach recorded in the first nine months of 2017, a trend which puts Rainbow Beach on track to host more than 275,000 by year’s end.”

And that was three years ago - the numbers could only go one way and that’s up. We have recently seen improvements in the town in regards to other emergency services, namely the new permanent ambulance station, and the new fire station and SES headquarters.

It is now time to progress to a permanent police station at Rainbow Beach with all the facilities that other towns enjoy. The visitors are not just coming to Rainbow Beach during peak holiday periods - there has been a continual build up in visitors from Australia and overseas, together with people travelling to the

area on weekends. Increasing numbers of backpackers are also a constant in Rainbow Beach. The attached is a list of only some of the many Queensland towns that have permanent police stations, the data was taken from the 2016 census. Few of these towns have the high population fluctuations that Rainbow Beach experiences although some have larger geographical areas to cover. Populations in some of these towns have actually decreased since the census but the full time police stations remain. Rainbow Beach may be a small area geographically but that also means that there is a huge increase in population per

square kilometre at these peak times. The following historical argument regarding allocation of resources based on area is relevant: During the course of the 1993 Commonwealth grants commission hearing, the Queensland government questioned the existence of a simple correlation between high crime rates and urbanisation, claiming that rapidly growing fringe areas and tourist areas were more likely to foster higher crime rates than areas characterised merely by high population densities. At a conference on Law and Order issues held in Sydney in June 1992 by the Commission, Queensland cited a “lack

of social cohesion”, such as can be seen in tourist areas, as an important determinant of high crime rates and claimed that the growth of crime was not proportional to the size of an urban area. Reference POLICE RESOURCE ALLOCATION by Catherine Bright and John Walker 1993

While we fortunately don’t currently have the high crime rate of some other tourist areas, we have all still noticed a sharp increase in antisocial incidents. So we need to act and get proactive now to support a submission to the government , rather than be reactive to issues that may arise at some future point.

UEENSLAND POLICE Service (QPS) has launched a new campaign aimed at reducing non-urgent calls to Triple Zero (000).

ED, JUICY and delicious strawberries were picked and eaten on our recent outing to Cooloola Berries near Goomboorian.

A wonderful roll up of friends enjoyed the day, strawberries and a great lunch menu. We finally said goodbye to Dorothy and Don Pascoe, who are moving to Bundaberg. Our usual monthly coffee and scone get together is on the first Tuesday of each month at 10.00am at the Rainbow Beach Surf Lifesavers Club. When I work here it’s like I’m a part of the family.” RSL Club President Don Holland and his hard-working assistant Kim McDonald took their turn on the BBQ duty roster recently. They do a great job cooking the steaks and burgers to order. Other volunteers help out with meal orders and the raffles. However, as Don said, “Without volunteers this club wouldn’t be here. We’re happy to serve but we always need more help.” Well we appreciate your efforts Don, Kim and team. Thank you for your service!

I caught up with David Hoyle who is back in Tin Can Bay working after a number of years living in Yarwun and Terry Giles, a long-term resident of Tin Can Bay who spent much of his working life in the Railway at Ipswich. They kicked off the Sunday BBQ 10 years ago and it has been a fixture on the Tin Can Bay social calendar ever since. “We started running the BBQ to get things going at the RSL on a Sunday. The concept worked and it’s been happening every Sunday since that first trial.” Different local entertainers are engaged to perform every Sunday. Recently it was the turn of Jen Eyre who performs under the label Just Jen. Jen is a livewire with a great

The Probus Wide Bay Regional Friendship Day and Concert was attended by two hundred happy souls. This is usually an annual event but was cancelled last year due to Covid concerns. Members often group together to attend events and activities relating to their special interests, be they concerts, hoy, or craft or garden displays. October is Probus Month, starting with Probus Day on 1st October when our members will celebrate with a games morning and picnic in the park near Norman Point,

Portable toilets now mandatory for campers at Teewah

in brief Community Pantry update The Rainbow Beach Community Pantry is in the initial setting up stages at the Church of the Good Shepherd in Carlo Road with a commercial refrigerator and shelving being installed. Chappy Ronnie is hopeful that the pantry will be up and running by the end of October - so keep an eye out on the Community News and Word’s Out Rainbow Beach Facebook pages for updates.

NEW PORTABLE waste facility has been installed and portable toilets will be mandatory at Teewah Beach from 12 October 2021. From that date, all campers staying in the Teewah Beach camping zones 1 to 7 must bring and use a portable toilet for the duration of their stay. Queensland Parks and Wildlife (QPWS) Assistant Director-General Andrew Buckley said the new requirement was the best answer to the issue of toileting at Teewah Beach. “There is a problem in this area with high levels of bush toileting occurring, particularly during peak times, contaminating the environment and posing an unacceptable health risk to campers and visitors,” Mr Buckley said. “Constructing permanent toilets in the camping zones we manage at Teewah Beach is not feasible as shifting sands and tidal influences make it impossible to erect any permanent structures. “To assist campers with the new requirement, QPWS has installed a portable waste disposal facility at Noosa North Shore for Teewah Beach campers. “The facility is at Noosa North Shore’s second cutting, making it easy for campers travelling from Teewah Beach to dispose of their waste before heading home.” The facility complements similar amenities in the Cooloola Recreation Area at the Freshwater day-use area and on Clarkson Drive in Rainbow Beach. From 12 October it will be an offence to camp in this area without a portable toilet, with an on-the-spot penalty of $413 applying for offenders. While using portable toilets in the Teewah Beach camping zones is now mandatory, rangers will focus on education rather than compliance over the

Road petition numbers a resounding success The request to the State Government to make the road to Rainbow Beach safer looks like being a resounding success by the number of signatures on the petition forms. With over 10,000 signatures already and closing on September 30, it appears the government will have to take notice. Petition organiser Tony Stewart says “I have heard $50,000 has already been put towards a feasibility study into overtaking lanes. A big thank you to all those businesses and helpers that have helped with getting signatures on the petition forms.”

Our shiny new Fire and Emergency Services Facility is getting its finishing touches ready for its grand opening in mid-October. In a huge boost for our town, the facility will be able to accommodate both the Fire and Rescue Service and the SES and will create the equivalent of 8.25 full-time jobs. A QFES spokesperson could not confirm an official opening date at time of printing but keep an eye out on the Community News Facebook page for updates.

Get ready for Get Ready Rainbow Bee-Eater Queensland Week BIRD OF THE MONTH

O BIRD COULD seem more at home on the Cooloola Coast than the rainbow bee-eater, our Rainbow Beach Cooloola Coast Community News bird of the month for October.

Like a moving water-colour painting, the rainbow bee-eater (Merops ornatus) grows to be 23–28 cm in length and can be identified not only by its vivid spectrum of colours, but also by a distinctive, repetitive “prr-prr” call. They really make the most of nature’s paint palette available to them, with the undersides of the wings and primary flight feathers rufous to copper with green edges and tipped with black, and a black to deep violet tail. To top it off, they sport a very cool black Zorro mask, for that extra dash of style. Romantics at heart, they are believed to mate for life, with the two central tail feathers longer in the male rainbow beeeaters than in the females. The attentive father-to-be will bring the female insects while she digs the burrow that will become their nest. And yes, they both love to eat bees! For those keen to spot a rainbow bee-eater, they are regularly seen frequenting our beautiful region, even right in the heart of Rainbow Beach village. The world-wide citizen-science website e-Bird (https://ebird.org/ home) also has records of them being sited along Carlo Road and at our beautiful Carlo Sandblow. Look up - that flash of brilliance darting and dancing across the blue canvas of the sky may be a bee-eater! Keep an eye out for the colourful rainbow bee-eater Image Melissa Marie

Members of CCCLDMSG meeting with Council in Rainbow Beach

HE COOLOOLA COAST Community Local Disaster Management Support Group (CCCLDMSG) is a dedicated group of stakeholder representatives that share local knowledge and expertise to ensure that disaster management and operations within our area are managed. Members from the group including QPWS, SES, Police, Rainbow Beach Community Centre, Cooloola Coast General Practice, and Cooloola Cove Resident and Friends recently had an update from Gympie Regional Council at the Rainbow Beach Hall. Council presented the Disaster Management Framework which has the principles of public safety, leadership, partnership and performance with good practice attributes including being scalable, comprehensive, interoperable, value driven, and adaptable. Disaster management is fluid, variable planning that relies heavily on

community understanding and readiness to be successful. Because when a disaster happens, we count on emergency services and volunteers but they also need to be able to count on us to be prepared. Make sure you have a household emergency plan, prepare an emergency kit, and know your disaster risk. A prepared community not only manages a disaster better, it is able to recover stronger. E DO HOPE YOU introduce our dolphins to your visitors during the rest of the school holidays if you haven’t already.

Bring your visitors to meet our friendly local Australian Humpback Dolphins

The dolphins have been very regular in their visits and during the school holidays we have certainly had our hands full in maintaining the Covid restrictions. During this pandemic the dolphins are oblivious of our concerns as feeding is monitored and carried out as per normal (especially spraying of hands with an antiseptic before handling the fish). These steps are taken to make sure the dolphins are safe from any of our viruses. It is also an important education program to inform the young and old about the plight of our sea creatures from pollution within the waterways and the effects of human viruses on them. We volunteers wear masks during the proceedings as we cannot always social distance. So if you cannot social distance, please wear a mask. This procedure is to keep you safe and the rest of the public safe. Patch and Harmony have taken up the challenge and are occasionally bringing in gifts so as to receive a fish or to show off in front of the female dolphins. It is really comical to see these antics. Thank you to those residents who have indicated their wish to become volunteers. Our two new volunteers Barb and Maree are an asset to our group. Training is given before commencement. If you think you could help out please phone me on 0439 075 271 so I can arrange an interview. Remember if you are a resident of the area you are welcome to the Centre and have free admission, only paying for feeding if you wish to participate. We open at 7am and have viewing of the dolphins until around 7.45am. This gives visitors a chance to hear all about the history and attributes of our Australian Humpback Dolphins. UEENSLAND MENTAL Health Week (QMHW) is an annual awareness week that aims to shine a spotlight on individual and community mental health and wellbeing. This year’s QMHW will be held from October 9 to 17 with the theme “Take time - for mental health”. The theme recognises the importance of taking time to engage in activities that boost our mental health and encourages help-seeking behaviours, when needed. Patrolled Beach Swim in the flags in front of the Surf Lifesaving tower. Walk via the steps or walkway near the lookout and surf club, or drive onto Griffin Esplanade. 4WD beach access begins here.

Coloured Sands Visit the patrolled beach, near the surf tower or the lookout to see the 70 plus colours in our cliffs. From town, walk south 1km along the beach - for best colours 4WD or tour a further 9km. Remember it is a gazetted road.

Carlo Sand Blow Park at the top of Cooloola Drive, and walk 600m up from the car park or bushwalk about 2km from the National Parks Office for spectacular views of the Coloured Sands, Double Island Point, Tin Can Bay Inlet and hang gliders.

Poona Lake Drive to Bymien Picnic Area (2WD) via 3km gravel on the Freshwater Road, (off Rainbow Beach Road). It’s a 40 minute walk to reach the cool waters of Lake Poona through beautiful rainforest and carrol (grey myrtle) scrub.

Searys Creek Only 7km from town towards Gympie, with 2 waterholes, boardwalks, bridges and history – do read the sign and spot the creatures. Always cool on the hottest of days.

Rainbow Beach Headland A look out, a viewing platform, 2 playgrounds, a skatepark, BBQs and picnic facilities. See the whales from here in season and watch the surfers out the front. Take a photo at the Cherry Venture propeller.

Double Island Point Access via the 4WD only Great Beach Drive or Freshwater Track. See dolphins, whales (seasonal), manta rays, turtles and walk up to our historic lighthouse. It has the longest break in Australia -when the swell lines up.

Mudlo Rocks Wander here at low tide, play in rock pools and watch 4WDs navigate any exposed rocks. ALWAYS check conditions and ask locals before you 4WD - it is not always safe, even close to low tide.

Middle Rock When tides and conditions allow, the walk to Middle Rock and back is a beautiful way to check out the Coloured Sands. From here, vehicle permits are required and dogs are prohibited.

This peninsula is the gateway to Fraser Island, a favourite fishing spot and pet friendly camping grounds for generations. Only 15 minutes drive (2WD) from Rainbow Beach.

Doug is a professional musician and will be sharing some of his favourite music. HE GYMPIE RSL Sub Branch has recently acquired new premises at 44 Nash Street, Gympie. The aim is to create a centre of wellbeing that provides a range of services to benefit the Veteran community, their families and the wider Gympie municipality. Martin Muller, the Veteran Services Manager of the Centre, heads up a dedicated team of nine people and a core of amazing volunteers. Martin says, “We used to be a small hole in the wall in the Mary Street RSL Club. Our premises is new, but the Sub Branch which is the charitable arm of the Gympie RSL Club certainly isn’t new, and has been providing support to Veterans and the wider Gympie region since 1919 in pursuit of its benevolent and charitable objectives. In fact, not many people realise that the Gympie Sub Branch existed before the RSL Club in Gympie. We created the club to fund our charitable works.” Martin explained that the Veterans Services Centre deals with a wide range of

issues, everything from helping homeless veterans get back on their feet, to the team rolling up their sleeves and doing “backyard blitz” style cleans ups for elderly infirm Veterans in need. “We’re pretty much up for anything. We have two new veteran services officers on board, a wellbeing support officer, a health and wellbeing coordinator, as well as an experienced team of compensation advocates to help injured and sick veterans access pensions and compensation claims that they may be entitled to.” “On a lighter, more fun note, October is Veterans’ Health Month, and we are holding a ‘Monster 21 Events’ for Veterans and their families and friends to enjoy. The events are designed to get people of all ages and abilities out and about and moving. We’ve called the month Movin’ n Groovin’. A show of gratitude to our community By Principal Steve Bennett Rainbow Beach State School

HIS MONTH I’d like to give a shout out to all of our community champions who consistently support the school to deliver exciting and engaging programs for all of our kids. We are so fortunate to have so many people support our school initiatives over a really long time. Whether it is our committed and tireless P&C, parents and community members who regularly devote their time and energy. We would also like to acknowledge the local businesses who support our every

endeavour and it is due to them we are able to keep costs to parents to an absolute minimum. We are very grateful for all of the support we receive and we cannot thank you enough! In the later parts of Term 3 we had many of our students head into Gympie to take part in this year’s Broncos League Challenge. I am so proud of the effort, skill and sportsmanship our students possess. Our team played in 6 games throughout the day and managed to come away with a few wins. Really proud of all the boys and girls for their awesome efforts across the course of the year. A fantastic new addition to our school is the rainbow seats and rock garden that provides a lovely space for people to enjoy. This project has been driven by Tyla Elmer with the support of Chappy Ronnie and the P&C. The concept of students being able to contribute to the rock garden with their own designs and messages is a lovely way of connecting them to our school and enhancing our school culture. We are looking for ways to keep this growing over the future years and providing ways to connect future generations to our school. Big thank you to all involved and we all agree it looks fantastic! Our last day of term saw the return of the Family Fun Fishing Day held out at Inskip Point. This was a return of the once annual event that was often a highlight on the school calendar over many years. It proved to be a really great day with many children getting to catch a fish and yet another way of celebrating the unique environment in which we live.

Hands-on learning leads to fun and fascination By Tin Can Bay P-10 School

WHAT A BLAST! What’s the best way to investigate the transfer and transformation of energy? Build a rocket! This term that was the project for the Year Eight students of Tin Can Bay State School. Each student had the opportunity to build their own rocket, considering mass, size, balance and aerodynamics. Each rocket was then hand painted before they were fitted with CO2 canisters for testing. The first blast off was on August 25, with many travelling more than half of the school football field! Students recorded each distance travelled, reviewed their data and designs, then made modifications with the goal of increasing the distance for the next test. What an awesome, engaging way to learn about energy! Thanks Mr Dorey and Mr Arthur!

YEAR 1/2 & 2/3 SCIENCE

This term hands-on learning in Science was a bit wiggly as the students in the 1/2 and 2/3 classes were learning about changes in the life stages of living things. Although we spent lots of time understanding the life cycles of butterflies and frogs, many students were more enthralled with our collection of real-life mealworms! It was fascinating to observe them undergo gradual changes as they became beetles before our eyes. Students used their experiences with the mealworms to communicate observations to each other, record observations, make comparisons with other living things and draw and label diagrams. Mrs Battaglene and Miss Gradwell were very proud of the learning that occurred and the great respect and responsibility that students showed when caring for and feeding the class mealworms. Students loved the interactive learning activities, with some wanting to take the mealworms home to watch another life cycle occur!

It was great to see so many students reading, sharing their favourite stories and participating in the activities in the library each day, including making crowns, bookmarks, sun catchers and the shrink keyrings that were out of this world! Engaging in books and reading is not only important in the development of language and vocabulary, but it also expands the mind, helps enable creative thinking, helps to reduce stress, is a great conversation starter, builds knowledge and improves writing and analytical skills. What great reasons to keep turning the pages of your book! Our Book Week culminated with the major event - the Book Character Parade! The outfits were exceptional! It was very hard to choose the winners, but choose we did with lots of cheering! Thank you to all the students and teachers for proudly wearing your costumes for the Book Week Parade and thank you to all the family members who came along to watch! The turn-out was our best yet! A special thank you to Mrs Dan and Mrs Turner for organising such a wonderful week of book-themed fun! Smiles on Dials at Rainbow Beach! Ash Little – RBAA

AINBOW BEACH Amateur Anglers Inc. hosted our third juniors clinic in midSeptember and the photos tell it all. Inspired by our very devoted Juniors Mentor Steve, (Principal of Rainbow Beach SS), our club’s young guns and guests of Rainbow Beach Amateur Anglers Inc. have a new-found motivation for fishing. With school holidays kicking off, we planned this juniors fishing clinic around the moon and tide phases that would best entice a successful catch rate. The weather gods also agreed and provided excellent fishing conditions.

Eager to cast a line, this group of enthusiastic kids listened carefully as they heard about the importance of environmental preservation and sustainable fishing. Getting hands on, our kids learnt how to source a variety of live baits and how to present them to best secure a catch. Soft plastics were handed out and various techniques were demonstrated. It was time to catch, and catch they did. Our recently purchased combo rods with side cast reels got a serious workout and the enthusiasm was electric as bites resulted in fish being caught. Sustainable fishing requires catch and release and this group of young fishos loved

With the arrival of the warmer weather, it is also time to check that your tackle is all in good order; ready to do battle with the voracious Mangrove Jack which begin to get active in the creeks this time of year. A live diver whiting, or fresh flesh-bait should result in an aggressive tussle with a lot of loudly delivered expletives, as the fish attempt to “brick” the ill-prepared angler in a cluster of mangrove roots. Flathead are a bit patchy but are still worth targeting with a variety of lure types and if the flatties are a bit slow it could be worth a troll along the drop offs as there have been a few good-sized golden trevally and the occasional tailor recently caught. Squid seem to be a bit hit-and-miss lately, but don’t give up hope, as last year there were good numbers being caught later into the year and I firmly believe that local squid are the best bait for fishing the outside reefs. A recent trip on Keely Rose brought home some big pearl perch, snapper and cobia - caught on local squid. Of course, other bait will catch fish if you’re in the right area, but consistently the local ones perform outstandingly. The bay reefs have been a bit quiet lately but still have produced a few quality cod and tusk fish for those who persevere and try the reefs on the periods of slack water on the tide changes.

CCLA Season is Underway! Jess Milne

THLETES FROM the Cooloola Coast Little Athletics Centre had their first out-of-town competition of the season at the Gympie Athletics Spring Carnival. The experience was most beneficial to those attending due to the ability to compete against several same age athletes. While winning isn’t everything there were a few medals earned on the day. U15 Logan Smith took home the gold in the shot put and bronze in the discus while U15 Anjelica Geurts brought home a straight sweep silver for the 100m, 200m, high jump and long jump. Well done to everyone else that competed, you’re all champions for representing CCLA! October is the official start to the Little Athletics summer season so it is not too late to join the team. Training is every Saturday afternoon from 2:30pm on the Tin Can Bay School Oval during school term. While the Centre mainly focuses on the Little Athletics motto of “Fun Family Fitness” there is an opportunity for intensive training for interested athletes that would like to compete. HE TIN CAN BAY Ladies Open Day was held in early September. The Overall Nett winner and also Senior Women’s Winner was Jacqui Johnson. Our ladies had a very successful day with our ladies team winning the Daily Competition. Many ladies from various Sunshine Coast clubs came to make the day a great success.

The Men’s, Veterans and Ladies Annual Championships are all now completed and ready for end of year trophy presentations. Visitors to Rainbow Beach and surrounding areas wishing to play in golf competitions are welcome to join our members, provided they have a Golf Australia handicap. Motorised carts are available for hire. Bookings can be made by coming to the Pro Shop where our resident Pro James can help you, or by phoning the Pro Shop

Thrilling end to the Spring racing series Kay Muir Tin Can Bay Yacht Club

HE LAST OF THE Spring racing series went out with a bang, in some cases literally. The weather forecast was for 10 to 15 knots northerly but in reality was a good 20 to 25 knot northerly gusting to high 20s occasionally, making launching a challenge and testing maintenance plans for a number of boats with some gear failure and early retirements. Despite the conditions, eleven boats faced the starter’s gun for the dash to the start with the multihulls making easy work of the reach out the creek and the square run down the southern inlet towards the bottom mark. Throwing caution to the wind the flying fifteens hoisted their spinnakers for the downhill run and were rewarded with some exhilarating rides. The work back to the finish line was heavy going for most and particularly tough for the Lasers in the gusty conditions, but well done for toughing it out.

Weta Nuff made easy work of the conditions and took both line honours and the handicap win. The second race was started in the remains of the incoming tide with Second Safari cracking the pin end start on port leaving the rest of the fleet in catch up mode. Weta Nuff and Billy the Kid (BTK) rounded the top mark in the lead positions with Bubbles in hot pursuit under spinnakers just ahead of Second Safari. Weta Nuff’s spinnaker drop didn’t go to plan which let BTK and Bubbles through to fight out the work toward the finish line with BTK crossing for line honours 9 seconds ahead of Bubbles who took out the handicap win.

Racers faced challenging conditions in the final of the Spring series

By the third race the tide had begun to ebb but the conditions called for conservative starts. Weta Nuff cleared out to take a strong lead for line and handicap honours which was held to the finish in the creek. BTK followed but shortly after rounding the top mark was hit by a big gust and chose to leave her spinnaker in the bag as did the rest of the fleet except Bubbles. On approach to the bottom mark Second Safari went for the old involuntary gybe and the big broach move which pitchforked the skipper through a reverse

somersault in half pike position earning a water rescue for the rescue boat crew. The remaining crew aboard sailed off home and claimed salvage rights rather than risk a hanging for mutiny. The last boat home was aided by the outgoing tide which was gladly accepted by the many tired crew in the fleet. Back at the Clubhouse, refreshed from some cool drinks and warm pizzas, all incidents now in the past, the crews are ready to do it all again in the first races of the Summer series.

Finally he said, “Granddad, I wish I’d gotten to know you a lot sooner!” THREE SENIOR PALS Three seniors are out for a stroll. One of them remarks, “It’s windy.” Another replies, “No way. It’s Thursday.” The last one says, “Me too. Let’s stop for a drink.” HEARING BETTER NOW An older gentleman was having hearing problems and went to see a specialist. The doctor fitted him with some hearing aids that brought his hearing back to full strength. After a few weeks the man came back to make sure the new equipment was working properly, which it was. The hearing specialist said, “It all seems perfect. Your family should be delighted that you can hear everything now.” “Oh no,” the man responded. “I haven’t told any of them. I just sit quietly, listening carefully. I’ve changed my will four times already.” HOSPITAL REGULATIONS Hospital rules state that patients checking out must leave in a wheelchair.

One day a newly graduated nurse assistant came into the room to find an elderly gentleman fully dressed. He was sitting on the bedside chair, with a piece of packed luggage at his side, all ready to go. When he was shown the wheelchair, he was adamant that he was fully capable of walking himself to the parking lot. But the assistant told him rules were rules, so he gave up arguing and let her wheel him out. In the elevator, the assistant asked the man if his wife was coming to meet him. “I don’t think so,” he replied. “It takes her awhile to change her clothes, so she’s probably still upstairs in the bathroom taking off her hospital gown and getting dressed.” WRITE IT DOWN A couple in their nineties are both having some short term memory loss. While in for a checkup, the GP says that physically they’re okay, but since they’re having trouble remembering things, they might want to start writing things down. Later that evening they’re sitting and reading, when the husband gets up. “Would you like anything from the kitchen, dear?” he asks. “Some vanilla ice cream please,” his wife replies. “Okay.” “Shouldn’t you write it down so you don’t forget it?” she asks. “Don’t worry, I won’t forget.” “Well,” she says. “A few raspberries on top would be great. Do you want to write that down?” “I’ve got it, honey. A bowl of vanilla ice cream with raspberries on top.” “And chocolate sauce, too. Maybe you’ll forget that. Want me to write it down for you?” A little miffed, he replies, “I’ve got it! Ice cream, raspberries and chocolate sauce. I don’t need it written down, for goodness sake!”

He wanders out to the kitchen. A half hour later, he comes back with a plate of ham and scrambled eggs, and gives it to his wife. She stares at the plate for a few seconds, then says, “You forgot my toast.” THE GAME On an overseas flight, a lawyer and an older gentleman were in adjoining seats. The lawyer asked the senior if he’d like to play a little game. The older man was tired, and he told the lawyer he only wanted to sleep. But the lawyer insisted the game was a lot of fun. “Here’s how it works,” he said. “I’ll ask you a question. If you can’t come up with the answer, you have to give me a dollar. Then it’s your turn to ask me one. But if I can’t answer it, I have to give you $20.” The senior figured if he just got this over with, maybe he could get some sleep. So he agreed to play. The first question from the lawyer was “How far apart are the earth and the moon?” The senior stayed completely silent, reached for a dollar, and gave it to the lawyer. Then he said, “My turn. What walks upstairs backward and comes downstairs forward?” The lawyer was stumped. He thought and thought. He tried to remember all the riddles he knew. He searched every corner of his brain. He even cheated and asked the flight attendants and other passengers. Finally he gave up. He woke up the older man and gave him a twenty. The senior stuffed the twenty in his coat and went immediately back to sleep. The lawyer couldn’t stand it. He woke up the older man and said, “I have to know. What walks upstairs backward and comes downstairs forward?” The senior got out his wallet, gave the lawyer a dollar, and went back to sleep.

Hello and welcome to another spectacular month of Rainbow �each Land. �ther than a li�le windy, the weather has been excellent, blue skies, perfect for the beach. Isn’t that what Spring is all about? The last few days of September were even a li�le colder than normal, must be climate change? With the holidays in full swing, Rainbow is moderately full of tourists. It is good to see the town with some life. Everyone remembers the lockdown days and wishes to never go back, especially when it is all out of your control. My deepest condolences go to those in NSW and Victoria s ll in lockdown. Have they forgo�en what “freedom” feels like? Hang in there team, not long to go before we are through this. Seems like we have been hearing that for almost two years now. Some social implica ons are star ng to become more of the issue than the vaccine. I know we are “Covid free” in Queensland but nothing like living under a dictatorship, I mean communist state, I mean free society. Just ask Anna, all those in house quaran ne, nothing beats power. That’s how Jeanne�e saved us to her new governor posi on. The next dilemma now since there is li�le Covid, do we keep ﬁgh ng this un l the new Queensland Na onal Plan of 90% DP (double penetrated) vaccina on rate, well at least for Queensland anyway.

Melbourne teams. Good luck to both teams, making it to a final is never an easy task. With the semi of the NRL being played as well, hopefully Melbourne can send Panthers packing. Unless a trainer seems to interrupt an a�acking play again. All this noise from the Panthers coaching staff, you would want to see some results, wouldn’t you? Rabbits and Manly are playing second fiddle but both teams seem to be in great form. Master Wayne seems to always pull his troops together at the right me. Can’t wait for the final at Suncorp, the home of the NRL. Riccardo needs a men on, had his first race win again since 2018. Nothing a few crashes don’t achieve but s ll need to be in the hunt. If you have not no ced, we are in the middle of a refit here at Rainbow IGA. We are expec ng some new and exci ng equipment over the next few months.
