Editor’s Note

It’s springtime…

O

NCE AGAIN we welcome all the visitors town, especially those who are enjoying your very first visit, like our ‘Bush to Beach’ guests.

I’d love to have that experience at Double Island Point. I snuck out of bed before everyone woke and took my cup of tea, for a sunrise all to myself.

Please make sure you don’t return home, before you have visited Carlo Sandblow. Too many visitors I speak to don’t even know it is there - and a sandblow sunset or sunrise is a ‘must do’.

Winter clearly left us the day we returned back to my Rainbow desk - and such a contrast to being snowed in.

Heatley, the boys and I were away for a couple of weeks annual leave, chilly down south but I managed to inhale three books whilst they hit Hotham’s slopes. Our road trip down and back reminded me of our trip round Oz a few years back. Ahh! We loved visiting Marlo and Cape Conran National Park, the Australian Mint and the Snowy Hydro Discovery Centre. Somehow we also managed to join the PM’s cavalcade after a visit to the new Canberra Arboretum! Sort of - well, the police held traffic for us too. My favourite was stopping the night at Greenscape Lighthouse, south of Eden in NSW. We slept in the lighthouse keeper’s cottage, toured the Lighthouse and nearby Bay, had the grounds all to ourselves - saw seals, roos, swamp wallabies, a lyrebird, a gummy shark and so many adorable wombats, like grazing, hairy Engels.

There was much to include in the September edition - the Seafood Festival, trivia night, CCLAC Flower Show, Sound of Teen Spirit concert, Scale Model Muster, Adult Learner’s Week, the tri, school holidays - and we’ve even given you some ideas for Father’s Day.

Until next month, Michelle and Heatley Gilmore

LATE NEWS: We’ve heard good news today about Tristan Sik, who has been unconscious after a sever brain injury and accident. “Trist has started giving a thumbs up in response to being asked questions. He is still very weak, confused and has no control over much of his body and there is a long way to go but this is a very positive step forward.”

There are even more sea creature mascots made for the 2017 Tin Can Bay Seafood Festival

Tin Can Bay Seafood Festival will be better than ever E

XPECT A TANTALISING display of what the Tin Can Bay seafood industry has to offer this year at the Seafood Festival. There’s more fresh local seafood, lots more delicious food stalls, in fact, more market stalls than ever before will line our foreshore, plus a new line-up of entertainment. Organiser Elise Henderson, from the Tin Can Bay Chamber of Commerce, says, “I’m most looking forward to the crowning of the first Miss Seaside pageant winner.” An inaugural competition will see vintage beauties vying for cash and a photo shoot. Approximately 10,000 visitors last year, the event places Tin Can Bay on the map. “The whole community gets behind the event - there are kindy and school fundraisers, coastguard, plus local businesses support the sea creatures,” explained Elise. “We’ve kept it as local as possible - Rainbow Beach Helicopters will be showcasing the beautiful town from above.” The organisers have worked hard to ensure local businesses and organisations are represented at the festival. Live entertainment throughout the day will keep you boogying, there is plenty to do for all ages, and entry is free. There’s a petting zoo, pony and camel rides for the kids, as well as many exciting amusement rides. The kids will be entertained while the adults can browse our new vintage vehicle display (thanks to Shannon’s Insurance). “We have also added an artist to capture our beautiful region on canvas, which will then be auctioned at the end of the day, giving you a chance to take home a reminder of our gorgeous coastal area,” said Elise. If all this will leave you a little thirsty, visit

the Wild Oats Beer Tent for those over 18 years old to wet their whistles. Feel like getting competitive? We have the mullet throwing (thanks to KJ Homes) and prawn-eating competitions. If winning is in your blood but you don’t feel like the tummy ache, why not buy a raffle ticket to go into the draw to win a boat with all the trimmings, ready for a day on our gorgeous bay. So bring your sons, daughters, aunts, uncles, grandparents and next-door neighbours for an incredible family day out on our stunning foreshore, 9am5pm on September 23, all thanks to our major sponsors: Gympie Regional Council, Bernard’s Petroleum and Shannon’s Insurance. www.facebook.com/ TinCanBaySeafoodFest/

Scale Model Muster at Tin Can Bay again T

HE THIRD QUEENSLAND Scale Model Muster will be held at the Tin Can Bay Model Flying Club’s field on Kidd Straight on Saturday and Sunday, September 30 and October 1. As this year is the 80th anniversary of the Piper Cub, a special section will be held to commemorate this historic occasion. The Scale Model Muster is for a model of any type of aeroplane built to scale, and features planes from the first flight to the present day. Prizes will be awarded for best monoplane (single wing), biplane (double wing), and Piper Cub. These will be judged by both the pilots themselves and the public. Minimum sizes are enforced for the planes

to give the public the best exhibition of models. Piper Cubs must be 40 inches or over, biplanes 60 inches and other monoplanes 72 inches. Major sponsors are Top Notch Energy (John Gunn), and Shedzone (David Garle). Both these sponsors have been great supporters of the club for some time and this is much appreciated by the members. Once again the public will be catered for with a full canteen operating both days with hot food and cold drinks. Admission is by gold coin donation. This is a great family day out and is growing to be a major event on the Queensland model aircraft calendar.

A quarter of a century for Tin Can Bay Craft Club O

VER 60 ATTENDED the 25th birthday celebrations of the Tin Can Bay Craft Club on Thursday August 10. Jan Low said, “It all started with 12 crafty people getting together to enjoy their various crafts. It has now grown to 104 members, with on average about 70 members attending each Thursday morning. “The group originally met under the old cricket grandstand near the Sleepy Lagoon Hotel. As it was used for kindy, we used to sit on the small kiddies’ chairs to do our craft, with much chatting and laughter.” Jan said the fun definitely remains in the present club, “Naturally craft clubs are not only for learning new skills, it is the

companionships that are formed, especially when people first come to our friendly area.” Activities at the celebration included best themed table, best dressed - which was won by the black, white and silver table, with Marcia Midolo from that table also taking out best dressed. Said Jan, “Fun items were Monica Foster’s poem on recycling, plus each table was asked to sing a song depicting the theme of their table, which included The Teddy Bears Picnic, Black and White Minstrels, Mammy, Mary, Mary how does your garden grow, to name a few.” The ukulele group played three fun songs with audience participation, plus an encore. Naturally the luncheon provided by the

members was up to its high standard, and the delicious birthday cake made by Secretary Patricia Grieg was cut by one of the original members, Bern Van Tilburg. Unfortunately another original member Patricia Smith was unable to attend due to ill health, and she would also have been invited to cut the cake. We wish her a speedy recovery. President Louise was presented with her 20-year membership certificate during the

morning by Vice President Penny Melton, there are several others to receive theirs when they next attend in the future. If anyone wishes to try this active club, simply call in any Thursday morning from 9am, at the Community Complex which is situated on the corner of Tin Can Bay Road and the Cooloola Cove turnoff. You are sure to find something to suit your craft or just have a chat. For further information call Louise on 5486 4621.

New lease of life for TCB Country Club T

Above: Teena Lee is all smiles behind the brand new bar at the Tin Can Bay Country Club Below: “The Saturday Club” also say they are very happy with the Country Club renovations

HE TIN CAN BAY Country Club is the new place to be! Thanks to a substantial makeover, it appears everyone, from staff to customers, is thrilled with the results. Leisa Charlton, the Tin Can Bay Country Club’s office manager, caught up with RBCCN to share the news. “There has been a great deal of work done, from demolition of existing features and fittings, to cutting concrete flooring and installing new drainage.” The new bar consists of VJ panelling, overhead shelving, stone countertops, stainless steel benchwork, decorative pendant lighting, new flooring and “Bricklane” wall tiling above the back bar, to name just a few of the improvements. “Patrons and members love the new bar,” shares Leisa. “We’ve had people say things from, ‘Wow! It looks fabulous’, to ‘long overdue’, to ‘how nice does this look, and the colours flow’, which is so good to hear.” The refurbishment has made serving large groups much easier, due to the more userfriendly layout, allowing more room to move around tables and a separate seating area for those having a punt on Ubet. (There are new high bars and stools in that area too.) Leisa feels the staff are more positive and enthusiastic with their new professional, tidy

and safer work environment. A larger makeover was also completed, with new carpet to the bar and function room area, new table tops and recovering of existing seats. “There is a great new Kids Play area, decorated with cartoon images, and four new tablets with games, plus a TV with Nintendo games and a colour-in and chalk board,” says Leisa. The new refurbishment is part of a broader vision for the club which consists of creating an atmosphere where people choose to dine, have a drink and relax. Leisa and the team thank their Club Manager, Brad Robb for a great job organising and overseeing all refurbishment works. Part of this plan is more entertainment, such as live music on Sunday afternoons, Barefoot Bowls monthly, and additional entertainment on some Saturday nights. The September events are a sign of the positive progress for the Club, with live music every Sunday afternoon from 3pm and Friday nights from 7pm. On Saturday September 9 Barefoot Bowls is happening from 4.30pm, plus entertainment with the Limeburners from 6.30pm. The Gympie Amateur Show will be performing a one-act play, Stumpy’s Gold on Saturday September 16. “There will be a fantastic event in October,” smiles Leisa. “Elvis and Orbison – The One Magic Night Tour has been booked for Friday October 20. Tickets are $25 and can be bought at the Club reception. “This will be a big night for us, and we’re all really looking forward to it!”

Café rises out of the ashes

by Barb Rees

T

HE OPENING of the Sea Salt Café @ Rainbow is the Modin Family’s ‘silver lining’. On October 18th last year a fire destroyed the Coloured Sands Café and the Foodworks next door. The Modin’s soldiered on as they are want to do and after months of stress, worry and bloody hard work the Sea Salt grocery store opened. Early August saw the second stage of the rebuild come to fruition with the opening of the café. As Leanne “Tuppy” Modin explains, “After the fire the family sat down and discussed what we were going to do. We had a few options, like expanding the grocery store, but after a lot of toing and froing we decided to open and run the café ourselves.” It is a real family affair with Jordi moving from Brisbane to take up barista duties, Leanne the ‘chef’ extraordinaire, Shelley jumping in to wash dishes etc and Buddy behind the counter taking orders. I even spotted Ruth picking up plates and giving the bench a wipe the other day! “I have always wanted to cook…to

become a chef, now I am living my dream.” Adds Leanne. “Hopefully when we have settled in a bit I will start my apprenticeship. I can’t wait.” Another key player in the café is Kerri Jordison, who was hand-picked by Leanne and the rest of the family. “It was a no brainer, Kerri is a great cook, has a lot of experience and is such a good person. She is an asset to the business.” “We are really happy with the everything so far, it has been so busy we ran out of coffee in the first four days. That was supposed to last us a week!” The café is open from 5am daily and Leanne changes the specials every day to keep us all coming back. Plus there is more in store: a new deck and licensed restaurant as well as a few other surprises. Watch this space!

weed control in the park. After morning tea, take part in tree planting along Tinana Creek, creating additional habitat and corridors for our koalas and other wildlife. The area around Priddy Road, Kia Ora is a significant koala habitat and they are often seen crossing Tin Can Bay Road. Unfortunately, they are also very vulnerable to vehicle strikes on this busy stretch of road. Presently, koala breeding season is in progress and so we urge all drivers to slow down and take care wherever koala road signs are seen. If attending, don’t forget your water bottle and, for safety, wear closed shoes and sun protection. Following the planting, join other participants for lunch at the Silky Oak Tea Gardens. The normal menu will apply and everyone will pay for his/her own lunch.

Cooloola Coast Realty team, Dee White, Katie Winzar, Kim McIlroy and Christine Druitt are enjoying their brand new office in the middle of town

A

S COOLOOLA COAST Realty clients return for a holiday, they will be impressed with the new office a few doors down at 8 Rainbow Beach Road. “When we bought Cooloola Coast Realty in 2009, the next logical step was to purchase our own freehold commercial property to house our office,” said owner Dee White. “Since we bought the building; it has undergone a major transformation.” Dee says the new real estate office design is largely based on years of experience in busy holiday periods, “Our business manages over 100 holiday rentals and during the peak period; it can get hectic in the office.” The spacious new layout is light and airy, with natural timber dominating, and almost double the size from their previous location - from 45m2 to 80m2!

It includes a main reception desk and secondary reception desk to accommodate more clients, meeting room, storage and a large kitchenette/break-out area for staff. “We drafted our own floor plan and engaged a company called Design Thought Facility to refine our ideas,” who Dee said were amazing. “We gave them a brief regarding our requirements and discussed our desire to have a coastal, urban feel.” Local builders, Peter Waldock and his son Dean, did the fit out. “We engaged them last year to construct the roof over the old arcade and they produce high quality work. Dee says, “The team are stoked to now have a coffee machine and a dishwasher! Overall, we are very happy with the results and we are all enjoying the new space.”

Welcome

Bush to the Beach kids! F

OR ALL SPONSORS, students and townspeople, you are cordially invited to a BBQ evening at the Community Hall on Thursday September 14 at 4pm to meet and hear how life is in the Bush. Organised by Rainbow Beach Droughtrunners and Tin Can Bay Lions Club, and funded by the gala concert, 34 visitors from Muttaburra and Ilfracombe Schools, including teachers, making the long trip from the drought area. Our guests arrive September 10 and will be accommodated at Cathy House, run by the Tin Can Bay Lions Club until Friday 15. Says organiser Tony Stewart, “We have fortunately been able to hire a 34-seat Bus from Jeff Barton in Gympie at a very reasonable rate. The holiday inventory: UnderWater World, Australia Zoo, Strawberry Farm, and dolphin feeding including breakfast donated by Barnacles Cafe.

“Hopefully we can get them kayaking or whale spotting at DI Point and of course they are breaking their necks to jump in the ocean, most having never seen the sea.” Rainbow Beach Transport and Kristie Pamenter have each contributed $100 for petrol - more donations to refuel the kids’ bus would be gratefully accepted. “The Western Queensland drought will continue until storm rains arrive and hopefully a great monsoon season.” Another load of food parcels left for Longreach late August, and Tony has started compiling items for October. Tony thanks the IGAs (please drop food items in the donation trolley), Revlon, Rainbow Ocean Palms, The Watts family for their delicious fruitcakes, Margaret Turmaine and most of all the generous donations from Victorian farmers. “I honestly hope this drought ends soon, as donations are harder to source with such a large area of the country in drought.” Call Tony Stewart to find out how you can help: 0408 767 930. Vietnam Vets Remembrance Day Rainbow Beach

“Remember the dead and fight like hell for the living” by Barb Rees

11

AM AUGUST 18, 2017, at the town’s Cenotaph, a group of about 30-plus gather to honour, mourn and remember the soldiers that served in one of the most controversial wars Australia has ever been involved in. The service was an emotional and factual memoir from Joe Casey, President of the RSL sub-branch. It moved myself and many others that attended, including the four Vietnam Vets standing proudly in the crowd. Even though the number of attendees was respectable, I found it a sad indication of the way these brave men and women

have been treated since the beginning of Australia’s involvement in 1962, when comparing numbers at Anzac Day Ceremonies. Local Vets include Terry Comini -6th Battalion Army (1966), Joe Casey Medical Corp Army (1970-71) and Padre Bruce Dorman (1968) Rifleman Army. Each was what was referred to as a “Nasho’s”, men who were conscripted and sent to Vietnam. Terry Comini was blown up by a claymore mine and suffered severe head and leg injuries and still served his two years National Service. “It didn’t matter if

you were injured or not you still had to do your two years,” exclaimed Terry. Another Vet in attendance was Dennis Stallard 21EST Squadron (1969-70) from Charlestown NSW, who was attending with wife Sue. They have attended several Vietnam Vet Days in Rainbow, “We enjoy the simplicity of the service, it was lovely today!” stated Dennis. As Joe Casey said in his monologue of the years over there, “The mateship was

great, the fear was real, the music was loud and emotions ran high….we proudly did our duty for our country but the politics sucked!” As I looked around at the brave guys that fought the war nobody wanted, I was struck by the fact that they are just normal guys who, thrown in at the deep end, did an amazingly brave and heroic job. We should all thank them and stand proudly by their sides.

FTER IAN WAS born in Eumundi, Queensland, the family, including three sisters, moved to Wynnum where he completed his education. His working life was with the Queensland Government, firstly with Aboriginal and Island Affairs, followed by the Department of National Parks, Wildlife Environment and Heritage. During holiday times, the family had many trips to Rainbow Beach where Ian eventually bought land to build his own home. He lived in Rainbow for his last 14 years, pursuing his love

of nature and the social network he had made within the community. He had a passion for travel and outdoor activities, such as nature walks, kayaking, aqua aerobics and line dancing. He was also very involved in tracing his family history. Ian developed a special bond with the Rainbow Aqua Group and joined them after classes for coffee at different locations daily ensuring the community was supported. Ian is dearly missed every day and we often think of him, his enthusiasm and his quiet unassuming nature.

HE BEST WAY to shut down lies and discrimination about the same-sex marriage debate, would have been not to leave it in the hands of the public. A vote in parliament for marriage equality was the way our society could have wrapped our arms around our Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex (LGBTI) citizens and tell them that they are valued and accepted. But it is too late for a bill - the $122 million ABS plebiscite will start rolling out this month.

If all of our leaders had the gumption to display leadership and used the ballot box, not only would it have saved a truckload of cash, but it would be a standard that would help squash prejudice. The Marriage Bill of 1961 set the minimum marriageable age as 18, making marriage law uniform across Australia, but it did not include a definition of marriage. Did you know that marriage was not even defined until 2004, when the act was amended to exclude same-sex couples, and not recognise same-sex marriages conducted overseas. If same-sex couples are excluded from

marriage, it sends a message out that sexual orientation discrimination is acceptable. So let’s redefine it. The debate is not just about marriage. It is about equality, and accepting every Australian citizen for who they are, and acknowledging that love is love, and not exclusive to heterosexual relationships. The Australian Marriage Law Postal Survey asks all of us: ‘Should the law be changed to allow same-sex couples to marry?’. Can we please stop discrimination - for sexual orientation, race, religion… Let’s ensure young Australians grow up knowing that they have the right to marry

the person they love. Forms are posted from September 12, with responses due by 6pm on October 27 and results expected November 15.

Wolf Rock Dive update vessel W

OLF ROCK DIVE Centre is proud to present our brand new dive boat. Evolution. Our new vessel takes ten passengers and maximises space and comfort on our journey out to the dive site. Our lucky passengers will stay out of the wind, nice and dry whilst enjoying their picnic lunch in-between dives. Divers can enter and exit the water with ease using our custom-made ladders and even listen to music or have a nap in our cosy cabin! We currently have excellent conditions out at Wolf Rock. Our returning grey nurse sharks are here along with big schools of eagle rays and regular interactions with- the divers’ favourite- manta rays. The water is 21 degrees, warming up slowly and we are seeing beautiful olive sea snakes

FTER CONSULTATION with Council, RBCT Secretary Tony Stewart has been advised the problem with the new stairway is not at the base. The rock they are mounted on has a large crack in it. A geothermal team was here last week, and I should be advised by the end of this week what the future holds. As for a walkway to Carlo Point, Tony will be advised about a meeting with all concerned businesses and Council as to further action.

N GAME OF THRONES one of the sayings is ‘winter is coming’, this year we seem to have missed ours!

N

While the region does need some good rain, the sunny skies have been great for tourism and some of the various promotional projects we have on the go. Recently we had The Great Day Out in the region, filming stories that featured Rainbow Beach and the Mary Valley; other planned episodes will include the Gympie 150 celebrations and the return of the Mary Valley Rattler. This month, the Australian Society of Travel Writers had their annual convention on the Sunshine Coast. Destination Gympie Region, working with Visit Sunshine Coast, hosted three visits to the region featuring up to 12 writers. These famils will create numerous articles across a host of publications in Australia and internationally. Additionally, DGR will be hosting a group of six key German travel media in the region. The German market is the largest international market for this region and there is a lot of interest in our natural environment of the bush and coast. These groups will not only see the region, they will taste the region with fresh local produce being a highlight of any famil.

Developed in September 2015, the official launch is September 22. Works at canoe and kayak launch points have been focussed at the Gympie Weir (near Kidd Bridge), Attie Sullivan Park (near Normanby Bridge) and Kandanga Weir (near the old railway station carpark). There are also plans to construct two additional launch points on Yabba Creek in Imbil by the end of November 2017.

OW IS THE time to learn more about our dolphins. Scientific studies have been updating us with information, so what was thought to be right 10 – 20 years ago has not always been correct. In the last month, crowds have been constant because everyone has heard about our beautiful weather, dolphins, sunrises and sunsets - a lovely place to live and visit. Because the dolphins are a drawcard for tourists, it is important that the whole town supports the business. Not only do visitors want to see the dolphins, they are interested in the local area. Some go sailing, bushwalking and fishing and stay several days. This is a boost to our economy. Remember that local residents do not pay admission to the Centre. The only charge is for feeding. So bring on down your grandchildren and visitors to see these rare and endangered mammals. See you at the dolphins.

Kilkivan to Kingaroy Rail Trail Council has also recently finished the section of the KKRT which meets the South Burnett section to complete the 90km hike, bike and horse ride experience. The official opening of this great trail will be in early September.

Volunteer famil to Tin Can Bay and Surrounds In July the VIC volunteers visited: Standown Park, Tinnanbar Waters B & B, Tin Can Bay Yacht Club, birdwatching along the foreshore of Tin Can Bay and Cooloola Berries.

Rainbow Beach Police Beat By Senior Constable Mick Emery

All in a day’s work

I

’VE SPENT SOME time guarding crime scenes over the years, and I can tell you that it’s typically a thankless job involving long hours of tedious duty: maintaining the integrity of the crime scene cordon, or waiting for forensic officers to complete their examinations. However, on one glorious afternoon during mid-August, it meant guarding a $260,000 yacht stolen from New South Wales, as it bobbed up and down at picturesque Double Island Point. Officers from Tin Can Bay and the Hervey Bay Water Police swooped on the yacht when it moored near Rainbow Beach, and a 48-year-old man was taken into custody. Gympie detectives charged the man with bringing stolen goods into Queensland and unlawful use of a vessel, and he has been remanded in custody. Scenes of Crime officers did their bit with a thorough forensic examination, but let’s not forget the dedication of the crime scene guard – who endured hours of guarding this evidence, while watching the sun go down over a deserted stretch of Queensland coastline… Sometimes policing is a ‘tough gig’ - like guarding over a stolen yacht while the sun sets…

Photographing

nature

by Julie Hartwig Tin Can Bay Camera Club

T

HE NATURAL WORLD is one of the most common photographic genres and encompasses birds, animals and insects, flowers and plants, geology and landscape. What distinguishes nature from other genres of photography is that it doesn’t include people or an obvious ‘hand of man’. Here are some tips to consider when you’re next out enjoying nature with your camera: • A long telephoto lens or a focal length in excess of 200mm is best for photographing most nature subjects.

• When photographing birds and animals, focus on the eyes – these need to be tack sharp. • Try to capture your birds/animals/insects engaging in their natural behaviour – interacting with birds/animals/insects, catching/eating food, at play, or just doing what they do in their natural environment. This makes a stronger photo than a bird or animal sitting on a branch doing nothing.

• Remember to leave space in front of your subject (bird or animal) so they have room to ‘move into’ the photo. • If photographing the whole bird/animal/ insect, avoid chopping off bits of the subject’s body. If you’re shooting the bird/animal/insect in portrait-style, zoom in and crop hard in camera. This creates powerful images that viewers can connect with.

Ron Johnson’s Bald Eagle won Highly Commended in A Grade

• Remember to use continuous shooting mode when photographing birds and animals in motion. • Look for interesting angles when photographing static subjects in the landscape. • Be aware of the colour and texture of the landscape and how light accentuates these features. • Shooting in Aperture or Shutter mode are the best options when photographing nature. Aperture will allow you to control depth of field (which bits of the photo are in sharp focus), while Shutter will allow you to control the movement of your subject (subject is sharp against a blurry background or movement is ‘frozen’).

• If shooting in low light or dull conditions, bump up the ISO to alleviate camera shake and maintain control of aperture and shutter speed. Happy snapping – more next month!

HERE WILL BE an Open Day at City Farm on September 30 to coincide with the Flower Show at the Community Centre. Please join us. Spring seems to be arriving early and I have noticed some shrubs already in full bloom in early August. Hoveas are smallto-medium, woody, open shrubs with many eye-catching purple pea-flowers occurring in late winter to spring. They can be seen often on roadsides in shady areas with good drainage. The local hovea is Hovea acutifolia, (Purple Pea Bush), our plant of the month, and like all hoveas is most attractive with its combination of dark green leaves and plentiful colourful flowers. It grows to around two metres. City Farm has plentiful supplies, so consider purchasing one for your garden. The other shrub is a wattle, Acacia macradenia, a Queenslander that grows well here, but is not native to these parts. It grows to around six metres and has an open, drooping habit. The common name for this shrub is Zigzag wattle because of the unusual branches which change direction

Zigzag wattle is in full bloom

between the leaf nodes, giving a zigzag appearance. So with its bower-like habit and prolific bright yellow flowers, it is another lovely shrub to admire. The Grants explore Darwin in an old army truck

Saturn Antennas in the

Northern Territory

Peter and Margaret Grant

I

N ALL OUR 20 years of travelling, we have never investigated the Northern Territory. When Peter attended the Darwin 4WD and Camping show four years ago, there was no time to explore. This year, we made a commitment to ourselves to tick that box. We have had an amazing time investigating lots of things the Territory has on offer. Our exploration started with checking out some of the WWII spots in Darwin. We chose to do this in an old army truck. Even to this day, there are still shrapnel holes in the fence of Burnett House near the harbour. On leaving Darwin, we took the Kakadu detour. The Sunrise Billabong Cruise with Yellow Water Cruises was outstanding. All the wildlife was waking to start a new day - crocodiles, whistling ducks, magpie geese, the tiny kingfisher and many more birds.

Above: Ex-Rainbow residents, Mike and Angie Matveyev catch up with Peter Grant in Mount Isa Right: Margaret was especially thrilled with the setting for We of the Never Never

22 – Rainbow Beach Cooloola Coast Community News – September 2017

It was truly an amazing experience with very knowledgeable tour guides. For me, the visit to the Elsey Station cemetery was very memorable. As a young teenager, I was very moved by the story of Jeannie Gunn who wrote of her life in the remote Northern Territory at the turn of the century. Mrs Aeneas Gunn, of the book We of the Never Never, enthralled me with the tale of her life on Elsey Station. To see the conditions and the remoteness made the story more meaningful. After the Northern Territory, we called into Mount Isa and contacted an exRainbow Beach-ite. Angie and Mike Matveyev have settled into Mount Isa and loving it. Mike was an excellent tour guide around Mount Isa and Mary Kathleen. We talked and talked and talked and caught up with news of their kids - Wade worked with us for 12 months. Of course, we were checking out TV reception along the way as well. One interesting fact we found while at Karumba and Normanton was that the TV reception was being transmitted in the mpeg4 format. Many of the older TVs could not pick up the commercial channels. All they could get was the ABC and SBS. That problem could only be solved by buying a new TV or a modern set-top box. Because we were away for six weeks, I have many stories to tell you so they will have to wait till next time. Travel safely.

your Community Tin Can Bay Quilters D URING THE PAST month the quilters have been quite busy finishing and starting new projects. Quite a few of the quilters made some shopping bags for the nursing home, to be used on their wheelchairs and walkers. All the fabric for these bags was donated by the quilters. We have done a technique called ‘fracturing’; quite a few made a small one big enough for a cushion cover and on August 29 some of the ladies are making quilts using this technique. We are also doing a block-of-themonth quilt called The Gingham Girls. This quilt has quite a lot of hand-sewing; then it will be all pieced together. We have some great projects in the pipeline, so if you are interested just come along this month. We have had a couple of ladies who were just passing

through come and join us for the morning. We are always looking for new members and we are a friendly group! Meet on Tuesdays at 9am at the community Complex, cnr Tin Can Bay Rd and Bayside Drive, next door to the Cooloola Bowls Club. Contact Jacquie Cross on 5486 4468.

A

RE YOU SCARED of speaking in public? Do your knees shake and your tummy quiver at the mere thought of having to make a speech? Then Toastmasters can help. August was competition month, with our members proving their time with Toastmasters really had taken the fear out of speaking in public. In the Humorous Competition, Paul had us wondering what else could go wrong as he described an ill-fated trip to the Melbourne Cup, and Marie tried to teach us how to ski as she took us on a hilarious adventure to the snow covered slopes in Europe. In the International Comp, Marie shared the true meaning of Happiness,

while yours truly found a way to duplicate a problem with disastrous results. In the Table Topics (Impromptu Speaking) event, Marie, Patrick and Paul very cleverly handled the question, ‘How could this happen to me?’ Toastmasters International is a worldwide organisation, and as I am writing this, one of our Sunshine Coast members is travelling to Vancouver to compete in the World Championships. Who knows, it could be one of us next year! We meet twice a month on the second and fourth Mondays at the Tin Can Bay Library at 6.30pm for a prompt 7pm start. For more information contact me on 0400 144 629 – or just come to our meeting and see what we do.

UNDRAISING AT THE markets through the stall has been both fun and profitable. If you are having a de-clutter then donate your unwanted goods to a good cause. Call Jess to arrange collection or drop-off point. YAP President Jess Milne would like to thank all the volunteers who have made the program possible. “YAP may be a program aimed at providing safe social events for youth, however, adult volunteers also benefit. Volunteers develop confidence through their service while re-engaging with their inner child by participating in the activities.” The group are also seeking a sole sponsor, says Jess, “With sponsorship we could expand and keep all activities free.

Currently I just try to find money to pay insurance each six months. “We still have a few grant funds, however, they run out soon and I hope we can keep scraping together enough funds to continue a basic program.” As well as insurance, the group pay for venue hire and activity supplies. If you are interested in volunteering with or sponsoring YAP then email: cooloolacoastyap@gmail.com or call/ text Jess Milne on 0411 218 254. There is also an opportunity for preteens to perform this time, so if you have a junior who play an instrument or sings, then register an act today! Car boot sales and a fun run! by Tina McColl, Acting Principal, Rainbow Beach State School

I

’D LIKE TO thank the members of the P&C who worked extremely hard over the past months to organise our car boot sale that was held on Sunday. It was a lovely day with pony rides, jumping castle fun, facepainting, fairy floss, coffee and yummy food. The contributions that the hard-working P&C committee and volunteers make for

our school is invaluable. They help us raise much needed funds to support students with their learning. At present our P&C committee is small and looking for active participants. If you feel you can spare some of your time to lend a hand,10 in a way that you feel comfortable, Page please feel free to join in our next meeting.

Cooloola Sand, wind and water have sculpted a varied landscape at Cooloola, the largest remnant of coastal vegetation on the southern Queensland’s mainland. High sand dunes, coloured sand cliffs, sweeping beaches, sandblows, freshwater lakes, tall forests, paperbark swamps and wildfl ower heath make the Cooloola Recreation Area a spectacular part of the Great Sandy National Park. www.nprsr. qld.gov. au/parks/cooloola/index Inskip Peninsula is a narrow, sandy finger of land built up by wind and waves. It forms a natural breakwater at the entrance to Tin Can Inlet and Great Sandy Strait. Inskip is a gateway to World Heritagelisted Fraser Island. Beach she oaks, cypress pine and other coastal trees and shrubs shade the very popular camping areas ringed by open ocean beaches and sheltered estuary shores. All are within 15 minutes drive to Rainbow Beach. Most of the peninsula is protected as a Recreation Area. www.nprsr.qld.gov. au/parks/inskip-peninsula/index The Great Sandy Marine Park extends from Baffl e Creek in the north to Double Island Point in the south. It includes Hervey Bay, Great Sandy Strait, Tin Can Bay Inlet and the waters off the east coast of Fraser Island, seaward to three nautical miles. Seagrass meadows, mangroves, rocky shores, reefs, sandy beaches, bays, sheltered channels, rivers, creeks and estuaries host a wealth of wildlife including whales, turtles, dugong, grey nurse sharks, fish, corals, birds and more. www. nprsr.qld.gov.au/parks/great -sandymarine/ index Fraser Island is the world’s largest sand island and an area of remarkable natural beauty. Growing on seemingly infertile sands are a great variety of plant communities ranging from coastal heath, mangrove forests and swamps to subtropical rainforest. The many archaeological remains found on Fraser Island record thousands of years of culture and tradition, and provide important links to their past for the Butchulla people.

Rainbow Beach fishing report Mat Cooper Rainbow Beach Fishing Charters 0439 775 070

UGUST IS USUALLY a great month for fishing and I won’t lie, it’s been pretty tough! With consistent westerly winds and a higher water temperature than normal, it’s been a little harder to get those good catches. From what I have heard from a lot of people travelling, it’s the same story

everywhere. We have however had good days out wide with decent catches of large parrot, pearl, and Moses perch, squire; also sweetlip, snapper, and a few nice red emperor, the best at 14.5 kilo, and the odd snapper up to 7 kilo along with sweetlip. Along the beaches Taylor have been very slow this season with the occasional greenback, however no real numbers. Those who follow facebook will know, but for those that don’t; we are running a big fish competition every month until the end of December.

This has a monthly winner earning a respectable prize and automatically going in the draw for the overall prize drawn December 31, which is a full day Fishing Charter. A photo of the monthly winner and their fish will be posted in this article. Congrats to Jeremy for July with his 14.5kg red emperor. ‘Til next month, hope it all improves and happy fishing! Right: Andrew Simpson with a gold spot cod, one of his many fish caught on Baitrunner Below: Jeremy Cawley, very happy with a beautiful Rainbow Beach red emperor at 14.5kg and July’s winner

Tin Can Bay Fishing Club News T

HERE WERE GOOD quality fish caught during the Rainbow Beach Fishing competition with reports of good numbers of reef fish caught on the outside reefs. The reef fishing inside the Bay is still fairly quiet at the moment, but persistence can be rewarded with a few fish. There are a lot of school mackerel around, but only the odd one is legal. School mackerel legal size is 50 cm and be aware of how to correctly identify this species, as only school mackerel are this length. Queenfish to 83cm have been caught by trolling ledges and drop-offs and best results are during the runout tide. Diver whiting have been caught in reasonable numbers but you have to move around to locate them on the day. Squid are being caught in most of the usual locations, mainly in depths of 6 to 8 metres. Winner of the Club’s competition was Derek Andrews with a 57cm sweetlip weighing 3.057kg. All members of the TCB Fishing Club would like to thank and acknowledge

the assistance provided by the Gympie Regional Council for the Facilities Funding Grant that we received recently. The funding provided an opportunity to install a 5kw solar system to the Club’s building at Tin Can Bay. This will greatly assist the club for offsetting all future power costs. The Tin Can Bay Fishing Club’s Annual General Meeting will be held at the Tin Can Bay Country Club immediately following the General Meeting that commences at 5pm, Wednesday October 11. New members are very welcome and all membership enquiries may be forwarded to the Secretary by emailing tcbfishingclub@ bigpond.com or phone 0437 242 171.

A very busy month for Coast Guard

A

FTER RECEIVING our new Primary Rescue vessel, she was put to work almost immediately. The crews had very little time to get comfortable with the new girl as we had over a dozen call-outs during the month. Members of the public were invited to the naming and commissioning ceremony. A good number of the community took up the offer to inspect the vessel and join us for refreshments at the Yacht Club after. Our thanks go out to all those people who contributed in our fundraising efforts, as well as our corporate sponsors who helped get us “over the line”: Gympie Regional Council, Madill Auto Group, Coastwide Charters, and Mt. Pleasant Social Club. Joining us on the day were representatives of AVCG National and Sunshine Coast Squadron Executive Committees. Thanks also go out to the Honourable Tony Perrett, MP for Gympie (and Patron of QF17) who opened the ceremonies and reiterated a commitment to represent us and our concerns in State Parliament. Mayor Mick Curran, representing Gympie

Regional Council (a major sponsor of our vessel) had the honour in naming our new vessel which now proudly sports the Gympie Region name and logo. Commissioning the vessel was made official by Mr R. Hood of the National Coast Guard Executive, and Pastor John Van der Heijde finished the ceremonies with a blessing of our fleet and wishing all our volunteers who serve the Cooloola Region safe passage and fair seas. During the next two months, public courses in Marine Radio, Coastal Navigation, Night Navigation, White Water and Bar Crossing, as well as First Aid, are being planned, scheduled and filling up fast. For more information on these programmes and more on Marine Assist or volunteering your services to Coast Guard, please contact our base on phone: 5486 4390. We need your help keep our boats afloat!

Rainbow Beach rower wins Head of the River

L

OCAL GIRL, Kate Gilmore takes home the Head of the River trophy in a first-ever win for St Hilda’s School. On the water four mornings a week at 5.15am training in the dark, add to that two gym sessions, blisters, two rowing camps, balancing senior high school work loads and other sports, this group of dedicated young women have rowed in excess of 800km together on the Nerang River at Southport this winter. Training starts in Term 2, building into Term 3 where 6 regattas are held at Wyaralong Dam, near Beaudesert. The last regatta is the prestigious Head of the River, where ten schools put forward their best “the First VIII” to vie for the ultimate rowing prize for the Brisbane Schoolgirl’s Rowing Association. The girls won convincingly, about two boat lengths ahead and breaking the record with the time of 6 minutes 17 seconds for the 2km row.

At the Ammonite Dinner that night, all the crew were congratulated, and Kate was thrilled to be presented with their highest honour, the Ammonite Award. Rowing head, Adam Harrison said, “It is awarded to the rower who epitomises the St Hilda’s rowing program. An individual who is committed to not only her rowing but the program as a whole, leads by example, and is always willing to lend a helping hand to whomever may need it.” He said Kate Gilmore is incredibly worthy of this award and has excelled far beyond all expectations. He said, “Not only has Kate excelled in the boat but she has done it with tremendous grace and humili t y. Kate has been an outstanding role model for all of her fellow rowers with her kind heart and fierce determination.”

EVI MCDERMOTT RETURNED from Brazil after playing football in Buenos Aires, Rio and is now in Paraguay, training for the next comp in Rio. Said father Greg, “He is loving the training and he said the kids are amazing, a group of kids have been following them around, and with the police help cordoned off a street and played the kids in street soccer. “The tournaments are very hard, as they have put them up against the under 17 Brazilian youth squad, Levi scored but they lost 5/2.” Greg and family thank Rainbow Beach Hotel, RSL Rainbow, Ruth Modin and the Sport Club Rainbow Beach, Rainbow Beach Meats, Rainbow Beach Fruit, Yarra, Sleepy Lagoon Social Club, Thirsty Camel Cooloola, Mitre Ten, Tin Can Bay Country Club, Shell Petrol Station and the CWA in Tin Can Bay. “We would also like to thank the community and private donors for all

their generosity, for without them this trip would not have been possible. “Also thank you to Rainbow Beach Community News for ongoing support and continued interest in Levi’s sporting achievements.” (Ed: Thanks Greg!) Levi was also one of twenty sporting champions in the Wide Bay region to receive a sporting grant from MP Llew O’Brien. His $500 helped pay for the Queensland Schoolboys Soccer Championships.

NOTHER LIGHT DAY for the second of the winter sprint series. We had eight starters this time including Michael and his son from Harvey Bay Yacht Club in their Nacro, Vendetta and our two club training boats skippered this time by Doug and John. Bob, on the start boat, had his work cut out for him determining the courses under a shifty breeze but did a great job keeping the fleet moving and mixing it up for these short sharp races. So, getting to the results..... The Commodore offered up a bottle of wine for the boat who chocked up the most firsts over the starting line, so we’ll all have to await the analysis of Beth’s start line photos to see who gets the plonk (sadly, I

Come sailing!

don’t think it will be me). Russell.com got three starts. Of the six races, three wins went to Harlequin, two went to Lee and Ken on Fudge Factor and one to Tatiana, skippered by Doug. Topaz, The Vibe and Aerobic all scored a few seconds and thirds between them No one went overboard or even ran aground, so nothing on the dirt files this week, and we all made it back for a much sought after sausage sizzle before the storm rolled in. A Little Humour YOU MAY HAVE SEEN THESE BEFORE, BUT THEY ARE STILL FUNNY Joe says to Paddy: “Close your curtains the next time you’re making love to your wife. The whole street was watching and laughing at you yesterday.” Paddy says: “Well the joke’s on them because I wasn’t even at home yesterday.” Mick walks into Paddy’s barn and catches him dancing naked in front of a tractor. Mick says, “Oi Paddy, what ya doing?” Paddy says, “Well me and Mary haven’t been getting on in the bedroom lately and the therapist recommended I do something sexy to a tractor.” The Irish have solved their own fuel problems. They imported 50 million tonnes of sand from the Arabs and they’re going to drill for their own oil... Paddy says to Mick “I’m ready for a holiday, only this year I’m going to do it a bit different. Three years ago I went to Spain and Mary got pregnant. Two years ago I went to Italy and Mary got pregnant. Last year I went to Majorca and Mary got pregnant.” Mick asks - “So what are you going to do this year?” Paddy replies - “I’ll take her with me!” Paddy’s in the bathroom and Murphy shouts to him, “Did you find the shampoo?” Paddy says, “Oi did, but it’s for dry hair and I’ve just wet mine.” THAT’S PUNNY My dad died when we couldn’t remember his blood type. As he died, he kept insisting for us to “be positive,” but it’s hard without him. People don’t get my puns. They think they’re funny. I saw an ad for burial plots, and thought to myself this is the last thing I need.

I have a few jokes about unemployed people but it doesn’t matter, none of them work. I can’t believe I got fired from the calendar factory. All I did was take a day off. Did you hear about the guy who got hit in the head with a can of soda? He was lucky it was a soft drink. I’m reading a book about anti-gravity. It’s impossible to put down. Q: What do you call the security outside of a Samsung Store? A: Guardians of the Galaxy. Don’t spell part backwards. It’s a trap. I wasn’t originally going to get a brain transplant, but then I changed my mind. eBay is so useless. I tried to look up lighters and all they had was 13,749 matches. How did I escape Iraq? Iran.

My mate broke his left arm and left leg, but he was alright. Thieves had broken into my house and stolen everything except my soap, shower gel, towels and deodorant. Dirty b#st*rds. SHORT AND SWEET It is not that difficult to tell alligators and crocodiles apart. One will see you in a while, whereas the other one will see you later. At any given time the urge to sing “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” is just a whim away… a whim away, a whim away, a whim away… I can’t get out of bed, my fitbit is charging and my steps won’t count. The fact that there’s a highway to hell and only a stairway to heaven says a lot about anticipated traffic numbers. “Do not touch” must be one of the scariest things to read in Braille. A blind man walked into a bar, and a table, and a couple of chairs…

Why was Cinderella thrown off the basketball team? She ran away from the ball.

People say love is the best feeling. But I think finding a toilet when you are have diarrhoea is even better.

I’d tell you a chemistry joke but I know I wouldn’t get a reaction.

Did you know that there are more airplanes in the oceans than submarines in the sky?

What’s the difference between deer nuts and beer nuts? Beer nuts are a $1.75, but deer nut are under a buck. I was addicted to the hokey pokey... but thankfully, I turned myself around. A friend of mine tried to annoy me with bird puns, but I soon realised that toucan play at that game. I’m glad I know sign language, it’s pretty handy. A courtroom artist was arrested today for an unknown reason... details are sketchy.

Yes Officer, I did see the speed limit sign, I just didn’t see you. If a woman says “do what you want”, do not do what you want. Stand still Do not blink. Don’t even breather. Just play dead. Arguing with a woman is like reading the software License Agreement. In the end your ignore everything and click “I agree”. Don’t wear headphones while vacuuming. I’ve just finished the whole house before realising the vacuum wasn’t plugged in.

That moment when your steak is on the grill and you can already feel your mouth watering. Do you vegans feel the same when mowing the lawn? You play any dangerous sports? I sometimes disagree with my wife. Husband: My joints are stiff. Wife: It’s because you’re rolling them too tight. FLIES IN A PUB An Irishman, Englishman and Scotsman go into a pub and each order a pint of Guinness. Just as the bartender hands them over, three flies buzz down and one lands in each of the pints. The Englishman looks disgusted, pushes his pint away and demands another pint. The Scotsman picks out the fly, shrugs, and takes a long swallow. The Irishman reaches in to the glass, pinches the fly between his fingers and shakes him while yelling, “Spit it out, ya b*&##rd! Spit it out!” SWATTING FLIES A woman walked into the kitchen to find her husband stalking a round with a fly swatter. “What are you doing?” she asked. “Hunting flies,” He responded. “Oh, killing any?” She asked. “Yep, three males, two females,” he replied. Intrigued, she asked, How can you tell? He responded, “Three were on a beer can, two were on the phone.”

A big thank you to Wayne, Tony and Mick for sending me countless jokes for this column, and making me smile at the ones you won’t see on this page. Please start sending yours in!
