dads!

UST THE THOUGHT of Father’s Day this year brings a tear. Blessed were Heatley and I with the most wonderful of men in our lives. My Dad, John, died a few years ago, but this will be our first Father’s Day without Sid, on such a day where he was ever-present, and it will be harder still.

Those of you who knew Sid, will know why. He was man who featured daily in the lives of our growing children. But I am sure many of you will identify - the loss of loved ones creates holes in many days of significance throughout the year.

As does fathers and partners who were not so kind or so constant, I know there are partners, daughters and sons, where remembering Dad brings no joy.

I hope that for you, there was a father figure - a father-in-Law, step-dad, grandfather, uncle or friend who has been your support.

For you fantastic dads out there, there are some events this month to look forward to - a Beer Festival at Kia Ora (John would have approved), and a trail bike ride there too. Trivia night for the Rainbow Beach P&C (Sid was so clever with his political and history knowledge

- very handy on our team over the years), plus live music, concerts and holidays across the coast.

We introduce some new dads (and mums!) with a bumper baby boom.

Congratulations all - and I’m not just saying that these arms are waiting - I mean it!

And then there is sport, fishing and holidays to read up on. Finish up on the jokes - you can thank my dad for many over the years. He would make sure there was a steady flow my way (I had to censor a few) and then I inherited his ample supply in books and notes (more censoring still!)

As we spoil the beloved father of my children, we will toast those two men who made such an impact on our lives.

HE LOCAL AMBULANCE Committee will be holding its annual Flower Show on Saturday September 29 at the Tin Can Bay Community Centre.

Doors will open at 9.30am with the presentation to prize winners at 2pm.

Flower and plant entries can be delivered to the centre between 2pm and 5pm on Friday September 29.

Entry forms will be available at various outlets including both libraries and can also be obtained at the Community Centre on Friday September 29.

The committee look forward to having your beautiful flowers and plants on display.

A photography competition will be part of the show and, as always, will showcase the remarkable talent in the local area.

Public support for the show is much appreciated as all proceeds go towards helping our Cooloola Coast Ambulance Service.

The Flower Show will also have stalls, raffles and plants for sale, as well as morning and afternoon tea.

Please come along and spend a very pleasant few hours among all the garden lovers and keen photographers in our community. For more information, contact Cheryl Zunic on 5486 8070.

If you are going camping during the school holidays, please remember to be aware of the dangers for young children around campfires. A fire should be put out with a bucket of water not sand or dirt.

If burns occur, they should be treated with cold running water and medical assistance sought immediately.

RUSH UP ON YOUR TRIVIA - the famous, annual Rainbow Beach State School Trivia Night will be held on Friday September 21 at the Rainbow Beach Community Hall.

Budding Einsteins and trivia wizards, research your facts and figures and book your table early as last year was a sell-out.

P&C President, Kirstie Jordison said, “We are really looking forward to the 2018 event which promises to be bigger and better than ever!

“Last year we saw a packed-out hall with more than 90 attendees booking tables and enjoying a night of light-hearted trivia challenges, an open bar and nibblies.

“How good would it be if we busted the 100 mark in 2018?

“We have ensured more tables will be available this year,” she said.

Andrew Hawkins from Rainbow Beach Realty will host the event and encourage participants to spend big, donating money in order to answer the tricky questions.

Last year the event raised over $3000 for the school, an unbelievable effort only made possible by locals getting together for a great evening to raise funds.

Kirstie explained, “It is an adults only event and tables can consist of six to eight team members, everyone is welcome tell your mum, tell your cousins, tell your friends and book a table!”

Cost is just $10 per person and If you don’t have a full table, organisers can find you a spot so there’s no reason to miss out.

Council will upgrade the play facilities at Phil Rogers Park in Rainbow Beach to include a lighthouse themed, wind-driven, rotating coloured panel

that Rainbow Beach, and the Cooloola Coast as a whole is one of our best assets, both from a tourism and local community point of view.

“These works to Phil Rogers Park will provide a stimulating and engaging play space for children to enjoy for years to come.

“The improvements to this space are in line with the Rainbow Beach Foreshore Development Plan which has guided a significant amount of investment in this area over the last four years,” Cr McDonald concluded.

The $75,000 project is funded under Council’s 2018-2019 Parks Capital Improvement Program and includes lighting improvements to the site, as well as supports for two trees to maintain their shade value for park users.

It is anticipated work will be complete prior to the commencement of the September school holidays.

The new, customised design in a lighthouse theme will feature a winddriven, rotating coloured panel which invites children to imagine the rotating light of a lighthouse.

This piece draws inspiration from the iconic Double Island Point Lighthouse.

Division 1 Councillor, Mark McDonald, said when completed, this addition to Phil Rogers Park will make the Rainbow Beach foreshore “one of the largest play spaces in the region.”

The Tin Can Bay Community Day Kids Corner is a fantastic outing for the whole family. Visit the Tin Can Bay RSL Hall on October 5 between 9.30am and 11.30am for family fun with face painting, giant games and a jumping castle.

CCYAP CCYAP are running a special ‘Macro Chasing’ at the Rainbow Beach Community Hall on September 24 from 10am.

Macro Chasing allows your children to hunt on a small scale, sort through a water sample to find little creatures, then make an ID. September 28, CCYAP will help your kids get their Flower Show Entries ready for the

Annual Flower Show, Under 16 category.

Meet at the Cooloola Cove Veterans and Community Hall from 1-2pm.

GRC Movies in the Park Pack a blanket and some snacks and head to Lions Park in Tin Can Bay for GRC Movies in the Park, September 29.

The kids will love watching ‘Captain Underpants’ under the stars!

The event starts at 4pm and will include fun activities, big games, colouring in and create a comic character competition.

Best dressed superheroes will be judged at 6pm.

BBQ, drink and snacks available or bring a picnic and enjoy the afternoon/ evening. Captain Underpants will screen at 6.30pm.

October 2, HOY for Chocolate at the Cooloola Coast Veterans and Community Hall from 11am to 12noon.

A fast-paced bingo style game using hearts, diamonds, clubs and spades with sweet prizes.

CCYAP Rock Painting will be on October 5 at the TCB RSL Information Day, 9am to 12noon. Come down to the YAP tent and make a stone creation.

Photography is also a handy skill in this position. A valid driver’s licence, access to car and camera would also assist. Computer skills are essential, social media helps too.

Age is no barrier, especially if you have a friendly turn of phrase, and can put a good yarn on paper.

You do need to be well presented.

It is very part time (it may only be a story a month, or much more), exceedingly family friendly and you need to be creative and autonomous.

Brews, Blues and Boogie ...

treat dad this Father’s Day By our anonymous beer lover!

A

FEW YEARS back, home brewing was all the rage but there weren’t very many success stories, rather tales of bitter, undrinkable, backyard brews that left a bad taste in your mouth and potentially, a rotten headache next morning!

Then, all across Australia, boutique breweries started popping up, releasing ‘craft beers’ for the savvy beer connoisseur, aka hipsters. True, there are a few of these beers worth drinking but many of them are not widely available and certainly not available locally.

Fortunately, a hero is among us. Daryl Levy, proprietor of Silky Oak Tea Gardens Crafty Brewery in Kia Ora is brewing his own craft beers and apple cider onpremise.

And yes, they taste great!

And yes, they are preservative free, so if you drink a few too many, you won’t wake up with a dreaded headache.

Daryl Levy and his partner Helen Dean have been running Silky Oak Tea Gardens for more than 20 years.

“I have always had a strong association with beer - either from one side of the bar or other,” chuckled Daryl.

“It makes sense to offer our very own beer because we wanted to provide our clientele with something different from conventional beer and cider.

“Due to the size and nature of the place, being able to offer these boutique beers was a logical extension on what we already have,” he said.

Five beers and one apple cider are currently available on tap. I was fortunate enough to sample a few - a great afternoon at work!

Here are my thoughts (from an uneducated but experienced beer drinker).

Tap number one Working Man’s Gold (mid strength) This is a refreshing ale, light in colour, thirst quenching.

Delicious.

Daryl says it’s the perfect beer to enjoy after a hard day’s work.

Tap number two Small Batch Pale Ale (full strength) Brewed using imported ‘Rakau’ and ‘Motueka’ New Zealand hops, this is probably my favourite. It offers a sharp citrus taste, a hint of passionfruit and grapefruit.

Very enjoyable.

Tap number three Mash Brown Ale (full strength) This is a dark beer with a rich, malty texture. Dark beer can be an acquired taste but this one is particularly good, so if you’re not usually a dark beer drinker, this one is definitely worth a try.

Tap number four Stoned Pilly (full strength) A sharp tasting Pilsner. Yummy!

Tap number five Hop Premium Lager (full strength) I am really enjoying myself at this point!

This one is a little bit fancy. Daryl said, ‘It’s a keeper, it’s a classy beer and very popular.

“The customers drink me dry on the weekends, they all get stuck at tap number five!” he laughed.

Tap number six Apple cider (full strength) Crisp, light, refreshing, lovely. This cider is quite remarkable. Brewed using pressed apples, Daryl explained, “It’s a popular choice for the ladies but also enjoyed by blokes who want an alternative to beer.”

I asked Daryl the secret to making such delicious beer and cider…

“Essentially, to brew a good beer, you must treat it like you are cooking a good stew or curry. Wait a few weeks before tapping it, age it to ensure the best flavours develop, mellow and mature.”

So there you have it folks - next time you are driving past, don’t. Stop in and try one of Daryl’s brews. Helen whips up a great lunch and dinner too.

Silky Oak Tea Gardens and Crafty Brewery are open for lunch seven days a week and dinner every Wednesday through to Saturday.

Don’t forget, every Sunday between 12 noon and 4pm, you can enjoy live music and lunch. Sunday September 2 is Father’s Day and is no exception.

Book a table and take dad out for lunch, great live music and a few beers. The next legendary Friday Full Moon ‘Pig on the spit’ will be Friday September 28 from 7pm.

Beer Festival at Silky Oak Brewery THE WEEKEND of September 8 and 9, Daryl and Helen will host their inaugural Kia Ora Beer Festival. Saturday night, September 8, bands from the Gympie Blues Club will perform from 7pm.

Sunday, enjoy live music from Billy Guy who will play from 12 noon to 4pm.

Of course, Daryl’s famous beers and apple cider will be readily available and certainly enjoyed.

Support the Kia Ora Trail Ride T

HE KIA ORA Community Trail Ride is set for September 22 and 23. It is a fantastic family event and a Kia Ora State School fundraiser - support it and get involved.

The event is suitable for two-wheeled motorcycles only. Unfortunately, quad bikes are unable to take part in this event however, the event caters for all ages and skill levelled riders.

There will be an Advanced Novice and Open track that heads out over Kia Ora and Neerdie. Novice riders are welcome to try their skills on these tracks, but it is recommended that a capable rider rides with them. We are unable to determine if a rider is capable without knowing their skill level.

There is a novice track available for those not quite yet ready to hit up the open track.

Please keep in mind that this track is for novice riders, those that are capable should try out the Advanced Novice and Open tracks.

Please have respect for those riding the novice track, as many are beginners. If sweeps find capable riders “tearin’ it up” on the novice track, they will be asked to upgrade to the other tracks.

For the little ones, there is the PeeWee track. It is lovely to watch the little ones riding their bikes around whilst trying to keep their heads up under the weight of that huge helmet!

Training wheels are more than welcome, but please keep in mind, this is a track out in the middle of the paddock, not a smooth track.

All riders, please remember that our sweep riders are not babysitters and all PeeWee riders must be supervised by a parent or guardian.

EPTEMBER 8 IS GOING to be a treat to the ears as the Cooloola Coast Youth Activity Project showcases the next generation of musical stars.

One highlight will be the sweet melodies of Chloe Shieh. At just 14 ½ years old (that half counts I’m told), she has spent over two thirds of her short life studying classical music. Her talents have earned her the Most Promising Instrumentalist 2018 at the Gympie Eisteddfod and she has taken home the $200 bursary two years running.

Apart for competing in eisteddfods, Chloe also performs in orchestras playing violin and cello and has recently been invited to play in the Sunshine Coast Symphony Orchestra. Chloe said, “ I love doing solos and gettting a buzz from performing onstage.”

Chloe is a distance education student of

Jubilee High School and part time Central Qld University student, all while living on a self-sufficient, off the grid farm at Wilsons Pocket. Her discipline and dedication can be heard in her professional approach to music.

The Cooloola Coast Youth Activity Project is excited to have Chloe perform at the Sound of Teen Spirit, as she will bring a different flavour to the night. Other acts include Ashley Pel, Braden Gray and Nathan Murfet, Charli Metropoulus, Lotus Clout, Hayden McIntyre and Zackariah the Man. Cooloola Coast Community Complex doors open at 6pm and the show starts at 6.30pm. Entry is only $2, under 12 just $1 and entry includes a lucky door ticket.

OVE OVER Ian Fleming, there’s a sensational new spy novelist in town.

Roma Ravn’s Reminisences of a Reluctant Spy has all the twists and turns of a 007 novel.

The only difference is it’s the biography of Steven Kovacs life and remarkably 100% true.

Roma herself was sceptical of some of his claimed feats however after seeing his skills first hand she did not doubt his authenticity.

Being in isolated areas Roma has witnessed numerous unexplained events so naturally she ran a UFO group in her retirement. She now expresses herself through Toastmasters and has been a member for over 20 years.

As a teen in the late 1940’s, Roma entered a competition to write a Mills and Boon novel and won a trip to Norfolk Island with her submission ‘Wild Brothers.’

Taking a break during her working life she took up writing again, first with a cookbook (despite limited domestic oven skills) followed by two biographies.

Steven and Roma met whilst living on the same road in Cedar Pocket over 20 years ago.

Through numerous conversations she took down his life story in shorthand notes with the intent of one day writing a book.

“I have had so many life experiences and the stories are running around in my mind,” Roma explained. “Putting life onto paper makes the stories available to everyone.”

Fast forward 19 years, Roma finally decided to put the true tale together. Her first task was to relearn shorthand so she could understand her notes!

After finishing her latest book, Roma went searching for Mr Kovacs and his wife Agi. His house in Cedar Pocket had been removed; only a bare block remained.

Mr Kovacs was a Hungarian businessman dealing in textiles and uniform manufacture.

He was unwittingly thrown into the spy world during WW2 by the Hungarian government who took advantage of his worldly travels for business.

No neighbours knew of his whereabouts and she couldn’t find any death notices.

Roma remembers Steven’s words of “the government never forgets” and can’t help but wonder if the past finally caught up with him.

On discovering his party in spying on other nations, Steven was running scared. After an attack on his wife, they escape to Australia and started a new life full of adventure.

If you love a good spy novel then get yourself a copy of this must-have book that will have you intrigued, as it is all true.

Roma Ravn herself has lived a full life; she was the first female geologist employed by the Australian government. She recalls attending the job interview and the male interviewer stated “But you’re a girl” to which she held both hands to her chest and replied “Yes!”

Public works on the Coast Smoke alerts I received this alert on July 4, Wednesday of the first week of the school holidays: The Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) will conduct a planned burn within the Cooloola area near Rainbow Beach on Wednesday 4th July 2018, weather permitting, as part of the annual hazard reduction / conservation management program for parks and forests...etc, etc Now, I already knew that planned burns are a must. In the event of bushfire I want my home to be protected and that the bush needs to regenerate. You just need to look at the devastation around our country in the last few weeks due to bushfires.

With family members with asthma, more than a hour or two’s notice would be appreciated.

I quickly responded, thinking our tourists would be packing up, as they puff on their ventolin: “Respectfully, could this burn please wait until after the school holidays? We do understand this is necessary - but really, why couldn’t burns always occur outside the few weeks in the year we have more people on the coast?”

We don’t need another reason to deter families from enjoying our area. I didn’t receive a response from NPWS media, but was pleased that our air quality was clearer last holidays.

Trees will light up The two iconic pine trees in Laurie Hanson Park will soon glow with LED lighting, maintained by Council and a $2200 donation from Rainbow Beach Commerce and Tourism for installation.

Solar was proposed, experts deemed that cost and maintenance in our harsh conditions ruled it out. The spotlights will have the ability to be coloured differently for different events and all controlled by a 24-hour timer.

New 60 signs for Tin Can Bay and Rainbow Beach You may have noticed, Rainbow Beach and Tin Can Bay have received new signs and line markings as Town Entry Treatments (TET) project is being rolled out across the state.

Physical measures such as new signs and line marking have proven effective in reducing vehicle speeds and crash rates as they enhance a driver’s awareness of the changing road environment.

New Zealand and the United Kingdom recorded a reduction in travel speeds and crashes with TET.

Tin Can Bay drainage project underway Gympie Regional Council has started work on 220m of drain between Groper Street and Dolphin Avenue Tin Can Bay. Stage 1 of this project is scheduled to take eight weeks (weather dependent) at a cost of $150,000, funded by Council’s capital works budget.

The project aims to minimise drainage issues during rain events which have been reported to Council by Tin Can Bay residents and business owners.

Stage 1 of the project from Groper St to the pedestrian bridge will see clearing of existing vegetation to improve water flow

and capacity, as well as earthworks which include installation of a low-flow concrete invert channel to keep water moving and the replacement of the existing timber footbridge.

Gympie Regional Council take its responsibility to wildlife and the environment seriously and have taken steps to mitigate the effect this project will have on local frog species during breeding season.

A significant amount of excavation is required to complete this project and as such, Council will use a full-time frog spotter to safely catch, and if necessary rehome, any frog species that may be displaced.

ADLY, LONG TIME Rainbow Beach resident Lawrie Taylor passed away on July 19.

Laurie died as a result of injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident on Tin Can Bay Road earlier that day.

Lawrie had lived in Rainbow Beach with his partner Rod Farr, since the late 1980’s, first at the caravan park and then after a couple of years, into their house built in Tingira Close.

Lawrie was born in Brisbane and had many memories of the war years. He attended Windsor State School and later Brisbane Boys Grammar.

After leaving school, he got his first job with Mobil Oil. As it turned out, it was his last job as well as his first, as he remained with Mobil until his retirement.

He travelled Queensland as an internal auditor, checking Mobil fuel depots. Even after his retirement, he was recalled for six months to sort out fuel supply discrepancies at the Cairns Airport.

As a young man, Lawrie was a keen bush walker and rock climber. He climbed Mt. Tibrogargan in the Glass House Mountains 21 times before his 21st birthday! He led many groups in those climbs and other climbs.

Lawrie had also been an enthusiastic weightlifter and motorcyclist. He still had a set of weights and his beloved 550cc Suzuki bike, although it had not been ridden for quite some time.

He was a keen photographer and avid collector of local historical movie footage which was borrowed from time to time by Brisbanebased TV stations.

He had been a National Serviceman, was a Certified Justice of the Peace and on occasions, the relieving weather reporter for the town.

As one of Rainbow Beach’s oldest and longest serving residents, Lawrie will be sadly missed by his partner Rod, family and friends.

Lawrie was privately cremated.

F YOU ATTENDED the Brisbane the Ekka this year, you would have enjoyed the sewing exhibits. One stand-out was a beautiful quilt that won first prize, created by our very own Maree Sayers.

The winning entry was a Judy Niemeyer quilt and it is most definitely, beautifully done - congratulations Maree!

Well, we are in the last month of winter and we are all back from our retreat where loads of sewing and talking was done - we had a great time!

Refreshed, we have lots of projects in the pipeline, including tube quilting. We are also planning a trip to the Brisbane Quilt show in October.

Not only do we make quilts of all shapes and sizes, we also make smaller items such

as bags, cup holders, table runners and placemats. Remember, it does not have to be a quilt you make if you want to come and join us.

Also, you do not need an expensive machine if you are learning, a straight sewing machine is good enough.

We are always looking for new members. Come along to our meetings, we are a friendly group. If you have never done patchwork or would like to learn to sew, there is always someone to help you.

We meet every Tuesday at 9am at the Community Complex, corner of Tin Can Bay Road and Bayside Drive (next to the Cooloola Bowls Club.

Drought runners continues and Bush to Beach Kids arrive!

This month our coast welcomes Bush to Beach Kids on September 17, organised by Tony Stewart and helpers. He has a week, chocka-block full of fun for them - including an ocean swim! There’s a Bush to Beach Sponsor Thank You night - 5.30pm, Thursday September 20 at the Community Hall. All food supplied, bar will be open. Tony encourages everyone who has helped the kids get to the beach, to come along.

RESH FROM another trip to the Longreach area with food supplies, the situation in South Western Queensland gets worse by the day.

It took the NSW Government to stir the Federal and Queensland Governments from hibernation to try to help those suffering immense hardship on their properties. You wouldn’t believe some of the things I have heard in confidence from those trying to help those suffering serious depression.

One farmer said to me, “Those mental health workers are doing nothing for me because help has come two years too late.”

It is a fact, stress is bringing on the big C in cases and I have heard of both partners suffering!

Our Queensland Government gives $1 million to farmers and $4 million to employ more Mental Health workers, it’s a joke.

Bush to Beach Kids will be back on the coast the week before the holidays make sure you say hello!

For a $12,000 federal handout, farmers need to fill out 80 pages to receive $6,000 in October and an additional $6,000 next March - if you qualify. I won’t start on politics as many from the bush will know what I mean.

To those that have helped with donations to keep food on the table for destitute families, a BIG thank you.

To see the anguish and despair on the faces of some farmers faces picking up food when it was delivered, really hit home.

2 Online presence for business, free tips and tricks session in Tin Can Bay On Monday September 10, the Tin Can Bay Chamber of Commerce and Tourism will hold a free information session at the Tin Can Bay Country Club, exploring the issue of creating and maintaining an online

presence for business.

Topics will include understanding websites, domain names, web hosting, site security, logos and branding, search engines, online directories, the ‘Cloud’ and social media for business.

Starting at 6pm, presenter Shakya Jemison will talk through the tips and tricks of the World Wide Web with plenty of time for specific questions. Shakya is also interested in hearing from local eateries or providers that are interested in a free listing on the Celebrate Gympie website, so if you can’t make it on the night then contact the Chamber for further information.

The long awaited pruning of the cotton trees seem complete.

Great that it will be done for the holidays, but why was it left as high as my shoulder height?

I do remember it being trimmed only a foot or so above the ground before.

Unfortunately, it won’t take long for the cotton tree to obscure this beautiful view.

But isn’t it good to have it back again? Please council, keep it in check this time.

Local tourism operators eligible for funds

T

OURISM INDUSTRY Development Minister Kate Jones launched a $36 million Growing Tourism Infrastructure Fund last month, designed to increase Queensland’s share of the international tourism market.

“This infrastructure fund which we promised during the election is designed to create new construction and operational jobs and drive more visitors to regional Queensland,” she said.

“We have officially opened the expressions of interest process and we’re looking for applicants to match government support with a minimum $1 million commitment.

“Other requirements include applicants must be able to start within 12 weeks of execution and be completed by 30 June 2021. We’ve set these parameters to ensure we deliver the kind of infrastructure that will create jobs in our key tourism destinations.”

Ms Jones said while the guidelines were clear that applicants needed to equally match government support, there was scope for the state to consider projects with exceptional circumstances.

“This strategy revolves around developing new tourism infrastructure, attracting more direct flights to Queensland and building on our impressive calendar of major events.”

HE PUBLIC are still very excited every time the two dolphin calves, Luna and Joe come in with their mums. There are a lot of ‘oohs’ and ‘aahs’!

I recently had the experience of representing the Dolphin Centre at a two day “STEAM Zone” information and interactive challenge. This was held during Science Week at the Gympie Pavilion for primary school children.

I presented our rare and endangered dolphins to each class with a video and provided information about the dolphins lifestyle and habitat.

I explained to these young students, feeding wild dolphins from boats and boat

ramps is an offence as dolphins can only be fed at designated feeding facilities, under the auspices of the Government Department of Environment and Science.

Dolphins are a protected mammal under law so we have to educate the public about their vulnerability to protect them to ensure they maintain their wildness. I only hope that this information filters back to parents.

I also touched on the importance of keeping our waterways clean of rubbish.

Rubbish should be placed into proper waste bins, not on the ground or in the water as it affects not only dolphins, but dugongs, turtles and fish.

N EARLY SEPTEMBER, Destination Gympie Region with Visit Sunshine Coast and Tourism and Events Queensland will host a group of eight European tourism media in Rainbow Beach.

The group represent media from Switzerland, Austria, France and Germany and write for some of the leading newspapers and magazines in Europe.

Orchestra Afternoon Tea Concert a resounding success!

The Cooloola Community Orchestra Afternoon Tea was held August 12 for a special experience.

Over 80 people from Tin Can Bay, Cooloola Cove and Rainbow Beach gathered for the concert, performed by the Cooloola Community Orchestra, The Gympie Strings and many more talented musicians.

There was a festive atmosphere in the hall and a warmth coming from people who enjoy a relaxed afternoon with good music, plates of cakes and other goodies, as well as tea, coffee and cold drinks.

There were songs from the Allen sisters, and a saxophone solo from their brother Gordon, all beautifully accompanied by their mother Sue Allen.

Alex Pattri and Gitti Harriman played a lovely violin duet and the orchestra finished the concert with the Radetzky March as on the two previous occasions.

Thank you to everyone who supported this event.

Interest is growing in the ArtyBall project with chief project officer, Leonie Guerin, saying she has received an encouraging response from the local public in contributing portraits of other locals.

Whilst coy about the actual number who have committed, Leonie says, “I am very confident that there will be at least 25 works displayed for public voting in early October.”

She added, “Local business is also supporting the project.”

The ArtyBall is a twist on the national Archibald prize.

Create a portrait of a local in whatever medium the ‘artist’ chooses. If you have someone in mind for your portrait, let them know as soon as possible as it is first in - each person can only be featured once!

Entries must be delivered to the Community Centre by October 5 for voting until October 19. The winner will be announced at the gala ArtyBall in the hall on October 20, where all works will be displayed and auctioned.

LOST and FOUND G

IVEN THE popularity of the recent ‘Bachelor’ TV series, some of you may be interested to know that Nick ‘the honey badger’ Cummins is a frequent visitor to Rainbow Beach.

As it happens, the former Wallaby, known for his colourful turn of phrase, popped into the police station on a recent visit to report that he had lost a Go-Pro camera somewhere in his travels. He’d spent a lot of time looking everywhere around town for it, but to no avail, you could say he’d been busier than a onearmed bricklayer in Baghdad!

I tell this story to highlight the importance of actually reporting if something of value is lost. It’s not hard to

make a lost property report and it makes the return of found property so much easier in the event that it is handed in.

As I write this article I have a collection of phones, jewellery and keys that I can’t find owners for (because they haven’t taken the time to report them lost). Some of the items are quite valuable, the owners must be as mad as a tree full of galahs.

So the message is clear: if you lose something of value don’t go off like a cut snake and don’t sit around sweating like a gypsy with a mortgage, pick up the phone and dial 131 444 to make a lost property report.

On the flip side, if you find property that is of value, the correct thing to do is

to hand it in to police (and, if the item cannot be reunited with an owner, you can claim it lawfully). You only have to wait out the 60 day period so it’s not like you need the patience of the Dalai Lama.

Finally, my boss would like me to mention our upcoming focus on road safety and I can’t ignore him because he’s as tough as woodpecker’s lips!

In particular, there’s every chance you will get stopped for an RBT in the near future as we will be increasing the number

of tests done. If you drink and then drive, you will be caught and taken to a police station to await the results of a breath test, you can expect to be as nervous as a bag of cats at a greyhound meet…

HE CITY FARM shop is undergoing a small change that we think will assist customers in making their choices. Many of our plants are small and have yet to flower, so on the display tables we are attaching photographs of the mature plants in flower. Of course, help from staff is always available!

At this time of year, many of our lovely native wildflowers begin to make their appearance.

Although wildflowers can be seen throughout the year, late winter to early spring, before it gets too hot. This is the most spectacular time, so now is the time to get out in the bush that surrounds us.

The heaths abound with their white flowers, boronias provide ranges of pink, hoveas have purple pea blossoms, hakeas and some wattles give the cream touches and then there are the various ‘eggs and bacon’ bushes whose prolific yellow flowers are easily spotted. In the wetter areas you may spot delicate vanilla lilies or milkmaids.

Our plant of the month is the spring flowering Hardenbergia violacea species, also known as Native Sarsaparilla. This is an erect or prostrate vine with trailing purple pea flowers, dark green lance-like leaves and oblong fruit pods.

Beat the camera shakes with tripods and monopods

F

OR THE SERIOUS photographer, tripods and monopods are invaluable because they provide a means of stabilising the camera when shooting in conditions where camera shake is likely, such as when using heavy lenses and in low light conditions.

Tripods are often used by landscape photographers for capturing long exposure shots and when shooting in low light conditions such as night and astrophotography.

Tripods can vary from heavy monstrosities to ultra-light carbon fibre travel tripods. These often have one leg that can be detached and used as a monopod, two for one and a very useful facility!

Another benefit of a tripod is that it also allows a degree of hands-free operation.

If buying a tripod, ensure it is suitable for the weight of your camera, as a heavy camera on a flimsy tripod will still result in camera shake.

Monopods are less common and are often used by wildlife and sports photographers. They allow freedom of movement without the restrictions of a tripod, but still provide a means of stabilising the camera. They also double as a handy walking stick for hiking photographers!

If you don’t have either of these, you can utilise props that are around you, tables, walls, flat surfaces, virtually any item that does not move can help stabilise your camera, thereby allowing you to use the correct exposure to capture those special images.

GYMPIE REGIONAL COUNCIL BACKFLOW PREVENTION DEVICE INSPECTION PROGRAM

Council would like to notify residents in the Gympie region of a systematic inspection program (pursuant to Section 134 of the Local Government Act 2009) for the purpose of authorising Plumbing Inspectors from Gympie Regional Council to enter properties/premises as required between 6 September 2018 to 23 November 2018.

Tin Can Bay Seafood Festival Charity Dinner

The program will collate and verify backflow prevention device data against the existing Council backflow register, audit and identify risks associated with potential contamination of the drinking water supply to ensure compliance with the Plumbing and Drainage Act 2002.

The inspection program will allow Council Plumbing Inspectors to inspect backflow prevention devices and to assess compliance in accordance with the requirements of the Plumbing and Drainage Act 2002.

This inspection will include commercial properties and multi residential unit developments incorporating a Body Corporate within the Zone Map areas that are to be entered and inspected. To access zone maps and find out further information, please visit www.gympie.qld.gov.au/ public-notices.

Tin Can Bay RSL Sub Branch celebrate Vietnam Vet’s Day Christine Carroll - President Vietnam Veterans Day was celebrated at Tin Can Bay ANZAC Memorial Park.

We were joined at the service by a small group of veterans, school students, community members and Mayor Mick Curran.

The RSL Sub Branch is open to everyone, whether you are a veteran or not. Tuesdays and Wednesdays, 9.30am and 11.30am we open the drop-in centre, open for anyone who wants social interaction.

The first Tuesday of each month is the Carers’ meeting when a member of Carers Queensland comes along to answer questions. Qualified JP’s also attend some of these sessions.

The second Tuesday of the month is the free veterans and community morning tea, with live music and tasty treats from 10am.

Now the weather is warming up our famous Sunday BBQ (noon to 2pm) is getting quite busy as we have the best burgers in town! Local musicians play from noon and raffles are drawn at 2.30 pm.

Vietnam Veterans Day was acknowledged at Tin Can Bay ANZAC Memorial Park

Vietnam Vets remembered in Rainbow Beach Last month, the Rainbow Beach RSL Sub Branch hosted Vietnam Veterans Day to commemorate veterans who served and those who lost their lives during the Vietnam War (1962-1975.)

The ceremony was held at the Rainbow Beach cenotaph and was attended by veterans, families, friends and members of the general public to remember this significant event in Australian war history.

In his address, RB RSL President Joe Casey spoke of the generational impacts of the Vietnam War on Veterans and their families both during and following the war. Guests at this event included Reverend Bruce Dorman and his family

and from the far south veteran Spider and his wife.

The RB RSL Sub Branch extend their thanks and appreciation to visitors and those who supported Rainbow Beach Vietnam Veterans Day 2018.

We were amazed at the huge jigsaw collection that we found in Imbil. An avid jigsaw fan who has been doing puzzles for 20 years has built a very special museum to house all his completed puzzles.

For all you puzzlers out there, take a look at the fourth largest puzzle in the world.

John is working on the second largest puzzle. It has 40,000+ pieces. WOW! Besides the astounding puzzles on Yabba, we thoroughly enjoyed our walks each day along the paths established on the banks of the river. It was truly a beautiful and restful caravan park right in the heart of Imbil.

And how was the TV reception? Amazing, but, we were only 40 kms from Gympie.

P

ROGRESS IS being made at the Tin Can Bay Community and Men’s Shed however, much work is still to be done to make it operational, pictured is Brian Lindfield, MP Llew O’Brien and Peter Palmer.

The member for Wide Bay, Llew O’Brien, was invited to inspect the progress of the Tin Can Bay Community and Men’s Shed.

A grant to build the shed was given by the Federal Government for the Australian Men’s Shed Association. Mr. O’Brien was very impressed with what has been achieved and amazed how the business community has supported the shed with materials for the fit-out.

There is still a lot of work to do to make the shed operational. If you would like to help, we would love to see you. We work every Thursday. Drop in for a cup of coffee and see the progress.

The next general meeting will be held Saturday October 22, 10am at the shed, located behind the nursery near the Community Complex.

Meals on Wheels receive a boost W

E RECENTLY received a wonderful donation, given to us by Dick Smith!

Our cook, Jen, took it upon herself to write to him, seeking help for Tin Can Bay Meals on Wheels. Low and behold, we received a cheque!

Thank you Dick Smith and thank you Jen for making this happen.

Last month, we held a sausage sizzle at Tin Can Bay Markets and participated in the National Meals on Wheels Lunch.

A roast chicken dinner was prepared and sent out to all our clients who I am sure enjoyed it immensely!

This last month has been a little quiet as we lost a couple of our clients. Our deepest sympathies go to their families and friends.

More than just a meal Our AGM will be held on Saturday September 15 at 11am, the Tin Can Bay Community Centre. All are welcome to come.

We are now down to 15 clients so if anyone in Tin Can Bay, Cooloola Cove or Rainbow Beach needs help with their meals, please do not hesitate to phone me on 0427 701 922. I am happy to talk to you about our service and costs.

Over 60’s AGM D

ON AND DOROTHY Pascoe kindly offered to hold the over 60’s AGM at their home and at the same time, use the occasion as a members social get-together.

Dorothy, an excellent hostess and cook, didn’t disappoint with tea and homemade scones for morning tea.

Following the tasty treat it was down to business, electing officials for the coming year. Dorothy will hold the President’s position ,Carmel Darcey as Treasurer and Ray Kahl, Secretary.

Business out of the way it was time for a hearty lunch of pumpkin or pea and ham soup with crusty bread rolls, followed by a caramel sauced bake with custard and cream. Whilst enjoying lunch, conversation flowed involving all sorts of topics from everyday events to travel experiences.

A big thanks must go to our hosts who

opened up their home. We appreciate the work involved to make this event possible. Everyone agreed a good time was had!

Our next meeting will be Tuesday September 4, 10am at the Rainbow Beach Surf Club.

Tin Can Bay P-10 News

L

AST MONTH, Tin Can Bay State School entered their Concert Band into the Gympie Eisteddfod. This performance gave our students the opportunity to showcase the results of their hard work and continued efforts.

Music Our Concert Band performed very well, while performing some technically challenging repertoire.

Tin Can Bay’s Concert band was awarded Second Place (out of eight competitors), a very impressive outcome! In addition to our award, we also received a great deal of praise from audience members who sought me out to offer commendations on our outstanding performance.

Our instrumental music program got a boost thanks to Tin Can Bay IGA who donated $350 through the Community Chest Program to purchase new instruments for our Instrumental Music students.

Community Chest The Community Chest Program supports various local community groups, it’s IGA’s way of supporting the community – the more custom they get, the more support they give back.

Students were super excited with a surprise visit from Anthony and Cassie from Woolworths Cooloola Cove, who dropped off three big boxes of delicious apples, oranges and bananas for students to enjoy at lunch time and at fruit break.

Sport In sport, many awesome events have happened already in term three. I would like to recognise some talented students who have excelled in athletics.

Firstly, to Matthew Doran who broke the 12 year boys 1500m race at our school athletics carnival in week two. He ran 6:09.00 minutes stealing the record from a student in 2003.

Madison Yates also broke a record in the 9 years girls shot put throwing 4.36m, beating the record by just 2cm. Tim Brigden also broke a record from 2003 in the 16 years boys 100m with a time of 12.30 seconds. Well done students!

Reminder: The 20 year Back to Bay will be held October 13 - don’t miss it!

O MANY people worked very hard to make a new, improved six-milliondollar school a reality. While the school construction broke ground in 1998 and construction began, a team began looking into making decisions about everything from new school uniforms to carpet colours and a unified school culture.

A facility that would accommodate a more complex school than Tin Can Bay had ever seen before. An education centre for not just prep and primary classes, but also a special education unit and high school classes to Year 10.

Let’s face it the old school site was awesome, but the buildings were old and as our school community grew we quickly ran out of space.

As a teacher who had worked in the old Tin Can Bay school site, it was exciting to move to our new shiny school, 20 years ago. This new school offered so much: new classrooms, space, an oval twice the size of most primary schools and opportunities for our children to stay close to home for longer, so they didn’t need to make the long trips to Gympie each day.

But a school is so much more than a group

of buildings. Over the last 20 years we have had four principals, a few acting principals and other members of the administration team, hundreds of teachers and support staff and thousands of children.

Tin Can Bay P-10 school has hosted massive sporting events, art events, social and community events and has not been afraid to colour outside the lines.

Programs like YACCA, marine studies, Year 7/8 program (long before it was compulsory to have Year 7 in the high school program), advanced science, industrial design and technology, to name but a few. Each and every program was designed to support the needs or interests at the time.

As a teacher who taught at Tin Can Bay for 21 years – until leaving at the end of 2017, I have many fond memories of amazing children, supportive and inspirational families and brilliant and hard-working staff.

What I loved the most about being a teacher at Tin Can Bay was having the opportunity to watch so many children learn and grow from small people in a tiny town to forward-thinking, independent adults who have gone out into the big wide world and found success, personally,

academically, socially and vocationally.

I remember fondly on many occasions former students calling into the school or approaching me in the community to introduce me to a boyfriend, girlfriend, tell me about their new job, show me a photo of their car, child or house.

Young men and women who have gone on to become successful builders, teachers, retail workers, truck drivers, florists, a member of the military, mechanics, plasters, plumbers, marine biologists, business owners, surveyors, supervisors, environmentalists and park rangers, to name but a few.

This year at the 20-year celebration of the new school site it would be amazing to share some of these success stories with the current school students, staff and community. Rainbow Beach State School Update Danny Staneig - Principal

W

E HAVE had a great couple of weeks since last publication with loads happening inside the classroom and plenty of extra-curricular activities as well!

Between Book Fair, Hansel and Gretel Opera and NAIDOC celebrations, the students have definitely been exposed to some serious cultural activities.

The Book Fair was very successful and the school now has $450 worth of new books for the library. A special thank you must go to Therese Dargusch for her outstanding efforts setting up the Book Fair celebrations, as well as all the students and parents for making such a great effort to dress-up in the ‘Find Your Treasure’ theme.

NAIDOC celebrations were held last month and students participated in a range of activities organised by local indigenous people. The students absolutely loved the day and we would like thank Nikki and her band of helpers for providing our students with a variety of great cultural activities.

Members of our hard working P&C committee and I worked the Gympie Boomerang-throwing lessons were a highlight during NAIDOC celebrations

Bunnings sausage sizzle on Sunday August 19. It was a long day sausage flipping but well worth the effort. We sold over 500 sausages and raised more than $1000 for the school - thank you Rainbow Beach Meats for supplying the sausages and Ed’s Beach Bakery for the bread. A big thanks to all who worked the stand!

Lastly, I have been to many schools over the past 15 years, teaching and being involved in both strategic and operational matters whilst in administration roles.

From these experiences, I have come to this conclusion and want everyone to know: Rainbow Beach State School is a GREAT SCHOOL!

Cooloola Coast Visitor’s Guide Rainbow Beach and the Cooloola Coast is home of the Coloured Sands, the majestic Carlo Sandblow and gateway to World Heritage listed Fraser Island. You can feed wild dolphins, visit a historic lighthouse and kayak with the whales.

Coloured Sands Starting below the lookout, walk along the beach towards Double Island Point for a kilometre or so to these amazing Coloured sand cliffs, with the best colours around 9 to 10 kilometres along the beach (accessible with a 4wd or Surf and Sand Safari tour) 5486 3131.

Carlo Sand Blow A bush walk up to Carlo Sand Blow is a must for every visitor. Drive to the reservoir at the top of Cooloola Drive. The Blow is an easy 600m walk from the car park or take the longer walk from the National Parks Office. Spectacular views of the Coloured Sands, Double Island Point and Tin Can Bay Inlet are the bonus for your efforts. When the thermals are right, you will often see Hang Gliders taking off and landing at this beautiful piece of Nature’s Sculpture.

Fraser Island Great Walk A 90 km trail which showcases natural and cultural features of the world’s largest sand island as it meanders between Dilli Village and Happy Valley www.nprsr.qld.gov.au/ parks/great - walks-fraser-island/about. html Cooloola Great Walk A 102 km trail which passes through a rich diversity of vegetation types with spectacular views, connecting Rainbow Beach with Noosa North Shore. www.nprsr.qld.gov.au/parks/ greatwalkscooloola/ index.html Rainforest Walk / Bymien Picnic Area A few kilometres from town, on the Gympie Road, take the Freshwater Road to the left. 3km on a good gravel surface will bring you to Bymien, which is the limit for conventional vehicles.

Lake Poona After morning tea or lunch in the picnic area you can venture on some wonderful walks to Lake Poona or through some spectacular Rainforest. Allow 40 minutes to reach Lake Poona.

Lake Freshwater Only accessible by 4WD, Tour or Walking. Walking tracks starts at the Bymien picnic area. The round trip from Rainbow Beach will take a full day and requires fitness.

Foreshore Tin Can Bay You can walk 4km from Crabs Creek to Norman Point, over picturesque bridges, signage of flora and fauna, through mangroves, playgrounds and outdoor gyms. It is mostly flat – very safe for children on wheels. Start at the playground opposite the library, cycle to Crabs Creek and stop for a coffee, then return to opposite the library. Enjoy the views out to the inlet while the kids enjoy the playground and skatepark.

Rainbow Beach 10,000 steps walk – from the headland behind the Surf Tower and Playground to Carlo Road. Paths are perfect for bicycles, scooters and skateboards.

Rainbow Shores Clarkson Drive has a concrete path for most of the way taking you through wallum and paperbarks.

If riding, you can turn left to the industrial area (Karoonda Road) and the return to town via Carlo Road.

Fishing, Boating & the Great Outdoors

Rainbow Beach Fishing Charters coming on board. Soft plastics are useful for getting past the smaller fish into the bigger ones, and some of the guys have been having a ball on both snapper and pearl perch.

Most all other species are in good numbers, as you would expect this time of the year, and some consistent decent weather has really helped.

Red emperor have been good over the last few months which is promising, as it’s coming up to the best time of the year for those ever-elusive big Reds.

Cobia have been a common catch lately

’DAY ALL. Great fishing has continued over the last month and we are having a great snapper season with not only quantity but also quality, some real crackers like the one in the photo which has the ugliest head I have seen on a snapper and there have been a few!

Pearl perch have been in good numbers and some real quality fish have been

as well, surprisingly, as the water temperature is down low.

Along the beaches things look like they have started to fire up a bit with some nice tailor being caught, along with the odd jew.

‘Til next month enjoy the beautiful weather while it lasts.

URING THE PAST few weeks, the weather has cleared and has provided opportunities for fishing in both inside and outside waters.

Reef fishing reports include catches of snapper, pearl perch, tusk fish and cobia. Inside waters have been producing bream and whiting, good sized flathead, some flounder, summer whiting and a few squid.

The Tin Can Bay Fishing Club $1,000 cash raffle winners were: First Prize $1000 - Amy Polzin, Langshaw; Second Prize $150 - Molly Leggett, Tin Can Bay and Third Prize $50 - Carol Slockee, Kia Ora. Congratulations all and we thank all our community members for their support.

Club members have recently completed the landscaping around the club buildings in Dolphin Avenue.

There have been many complimentary comments from locals and visitors regarding the excellent work that was undertaken by team members.

Members of our community are invited to attend our Club Open Day which will be held at 10.30am on Saturday October 6, 2018.

The Open Day will provide our club with the opportunity to acknowledge and thank the Gympie Regional Council, the Queensland Government, Lee Fishing Company, Bunnings Gympie and our many supporters and sponsors.

The Tin Can Bay Fishing Club Annual General Meeting will be held at 4pm on Wednesday October 10 at 33 Dolphin

Fraser Island Tailor Weigh-in raises funds for RACQ Life Flight Rescue

T

HE FRASER ISLAND Tailor Weigh-In, held annually between August and September is an integral part of the Fraser Island Community to raise money and awareness for RACQ Life Flight Rescue.

The event was initiated in 2014 by Larry Ray from Fraser Island Retreat, located in Happy Valley. The original competition raised funds for the local Ambulance Committee.

In 2015, Larry became ill and had to be airlifted to hospital by the RACQ Life Flight Rescue Helicopter. Larry’s one ‘free’ mission helicopter ride was said to have cost at least $12 500. After this life saving trip, he decided to run the annual Tailor Weigh-in to support Life Flight.

The RACQ helicopter comes to the aid of

Fraser Island visitors and residents several times a week when illness or injury strikes and Larry believed that fundraising for something so critical to the community of Fraser Island was an absolute no-brainer.

With a response time of as little as six minutes and a critical care doctor and QAS paramedic on board, Queenslanders are in good hands. RACQ Life Flight has saved over 40,000 lives in the last 30 years.

The annual weigh has a range of categories and great prizes up for grabs.

ID YOU KNOW, QF17 is run by volunteers and most of our income comes from donations? More than 90% of this income needed to maintain vessels, repair equipment, purchase fuel and plan for future replacements and mandated upgrades.

Our latest fundraiser is a fantastic raffle two nights charter aboard one of the Tin Can Bay houseboats! Keep a look out for ticket sellers at the Tin Can Bay markets, Dolphin Arcade, BCF and various retails shops.

“We would like to thank the public and local businesses who support our efforts.

Without YOUR support, QF17 couldn’t keep boats afloat.”

QF17 is looking for sponsors to help purchase a Thermal Imaging Camera. This will assist in rescue operations at night, in heavy fog or limited visibility. Last year we were called on six times to locate victims,

but we didn’t have the capability to ‘see’.

We’ve had outstanding success with our community courses including First Aid, Beginners Introduction to Boating, Navigation Skills, White Water and Bar Crossing, and Marine Radio Use Certification.

More courses are scheduled for September.

Become a Rainbow Beach surf lifesaver I

F YOU ARE 15 years or older, why not have fun these school holidays and meet new friends and gain your bronze medallion?

The intense 7-day, live-in course, held September Sunday 17 to Saturday 23 will earn you a Bronze Medallion: Certificate II in Public Safety (Aquatic Rescue).

If you are aged 13 to 15 years you can enrol in a Surf Rescue Certificate and Resuscitation Award (SRC).

It’s a great chance to learn some new skills, meet some great people and do good for your community.

Throughout the week participants stay in dormitory accommodation at Rainbow Beach Surf Lifesaving Club. There will be adult supervision at all times along with experienced junior helpers.

The Certificate II in Public Safety (Aquatic Rescue) is an accredited course towards your QCST (Year 12), giving four out of a possible 20 points.

The full cost of the Bronze Medallion course is $250 including GST. This includes training manual, Cert II workbook, full patrol uniform, patrol / club cap, club togs, hi-vis safety rash shirt or singlet, and club polo shirt; as well as food and accommodation for the week. This does not include club membership.

A swim test must be completed before the camp: a 400-metre pool swim in less than nine minutes (Bronze Medallion) or 200 metres in five minutes (SRC).

Little Athletics back in force

HE AUGUST sign-on day had the administration team scrambling as numbers exceeded expectation!

“It seems the athletics bug has caught on!” exclaimed Centre Manager, Jess Milne.

Over 30 budding sports stars have taken to the jump, throw, run format and are giving the equipment a good workout.

There are new and returning faces making up a great mix of age groups. Parents are taking on coaching roles and the fun family fitness motto of Little Athletics is truly alive at the Cooloola Coast Centre.

Since the weather is heating up quickly, this year training has shifted to an 8am start Saturday mornings on the Tin Can Bay School oval and it hasn’t stopped the enthusiasm!

There is still time to register for the summer season which will run until the end of March 2019.

Trial training is only $5 per session for two weeks which comes off the registration fee when you join.

OMPETITION TWO is underway!

Held every Wednesday night, teams battle hotly contested doubles matches.

Additionally, every Wednesday morning from 9am to 11am, social games are well attended so come along and have a hit.

The community centre have endorsed the purchase of additional tables and chief organiser, Bob Gudge, said he is looking forward to expanding the activity in the coming months.

“Additional equipment will enable more players and teams to participate in competition and provide more opportunity for interested groups to play during the day,” he said.

AST MONTH, on a thick foggy morning, the Dragons planned a long paddle to Bullock Point. We had a late start because of no visibility due to the fog, so we hovered around the parked yachts out in the Inlet to wait for the fog to lift.

Eventually we got underway, following our safety boat who showed us the safe route.

As the fog cleared, the Bay was a beautiful sight with calm water and little wind,

ideal for Dragon boating.

Paddlers from the Hervey Bay Club joined us so we had a full boat. Because of the late start and time restraints, we didn’t reach Bullock Point. Instead we turned around and veered into Carlo where we had a break and social brunch.

Our visitors were impressed with our catering of sandwiches, fruit, nuts, muesli bars, cheese, crackers, juice and ice tea.

As a result of our sports regatta weekend in July, the Club presented our Community groups with donations. We would like to

HE NIPPER PROGRAM is all about having fun, getting kids fit and active whilst educating them about the beach and surf.

Nippers is a fantastic way to get involved with a great club and maybe these kids may choose to become lifesavers themselves.

Surf lifesaving is a great family activity and at the least, what the children learn at Nippers could one day save a life, be that their own or someone else’s.

If you would like to get your kids involved, please come along to one of the following sign-on days to register.

The next day, a dog trotted into the office, up to the receptionist. Getting the idea, the receptionist got the office manager. The office manager looked at the dog and was surprised, to say the least. However, the dog looked determined, so he leads him into the office. Inside, the dog jumped up on the chair and stared at the manager.

The manager said, “I can’t hire you as the sign says you have to be able to type.”

The dog jumped down, went to the typewriter and proceeded to type out a perfect letter. He took out the page and trotted over to the manager and gave it to him, then jumped back on the chair.

The manager was stunned but then told the dog, “The sign says you have to be good with a computer.”

The dog jumped down again and went to the computer. The dog proceeded to enter and execute a perfect program.

By this time the manager was totally dumbfounded! He looked at the dog and said, “I realise you are a very intelligent

dog and have some interesting abilities.

However, I still can’t give you the job.”

The dog jumped down and went to a copy of the sign and put his paw on the sentences ‘Equal Opportunity Employer’.

The manager said, “Yes, but the sign also says that you have to be bilingual.”

The dog looked at the manager and said, “Meow!”

THE ARTIST An artist asked a gallery owner if there had been any recent interest in his paintings which happened to be on display.

“I have good news and bad news,” the gallery owner replied. “The good news is that a gentleman inquired about your work and wondered if it would appreciate in value after your death.”

“What did you say?” questioned the artist.

“When I told him it would, he bought all 15 of your paintings.”

“That’s wonderful!” the artist exclaimed.

“What’s the bad news?”

“He said he was your doctor!”

PRISON TIME The three-time felon felt a wave of panic come over him as he surveyed the jury in the courthouse. Positive he’d never beat the murder rap, he managed to get hold of one of the kinder looking jurors and bribe her with his life savings to go for a manslaughter verdict.

Sure enough, at the close of the trial the jury declared him guilty of manslaughter.

Tears of gratitude welling up in his eyes, the young man had a moment with the juror before being led off to prison. “Thank you, thank you, how’d you do it?”

“It wasn’t easy,” she admitted, “They all wanted to acquit you.”

PLANT PROBLEM “I’m sorry,” said the clerk in flower shop, “we don’t have potted geraniums so could you use African Violets instead?”

The customer replied sadly, “No it was geraniums my wife told me to water while she was gone.”

LOVE DRESS A mother-in-law stopped in unexpectedly at her recently married son’s house.

She knocked on the door, then immediately walked in and is shocked to see her daughter-in-law lying on the couch, totally naked.

“What are you doing?” she asked.

“I’m waiting for Jeff to come home from work,” the daughter-in-law answered.

“But you’re naked!” the mother-in-law exclaimed.

“This is my love dress,” the daughter-inlaw replied.

“Love dress? But you’re naked!”

“Jeff loves me to wear this dress, it makes him happy and it makes me happy.”

On her way home, the mother-in-law thought about the love dress. When she got home she got undressed, showered, put on her best perfume and expectantly waited for her husband, lying provocatively on the couch.

Finally her husband came home. He walked in and saw her naked on the couch.

“What are you doing?” he asked.

“This is my love dress,” she replied.

“Needs ironing,” he says. “What’s for dinner?”

FIRST TIME GAMBLER I was on vacation, playing the slot machines. It was my first time in a casino, and I wasn’t sure how the machines operated.

“How does this work,” I said to a casino employee.

The worker showed me how to insert money, hit the spin button and operate the release handle.

“Where does the money come out?”

I asked.

He smiled and motioned to a far wall, “Usually at the ATM.” ONE-LINERS Everyone has a photographic memory.

Hello again to all.

As usual, the weather this time of the year is absolutely fantastic, 'for us'! The same can't be said for our drought affected farmers.

Tony Stewart has been doing a wonderful job with drought runners, taking his own car and trailer, sometimes sleeping in the car, snuggled up to the little dog, it gets pretty cold out there and I don't think it's Rosie's idea of fun! My hat goes off to him.

The time and effort he has put in has been amazing, picking up donations and supplies from all over the Gympie shire. We have a trolly, at both the Rainbow Beach and Tin Can Bay stores to help aid our farmers.

When you do come in, spare a thought for those in need and donate.

As we ramp up to the busy time of the year, there seems no end to, as they say, “wash, cook and clean.”

Kaylan Ponga has admitted he would love to be in an All Black jersey at some stage of his career. I'm not going to mention any more on that subject until next month. For such a short period of time, the amount of work that goes into ordering is unbelievable.

I received a email last week explaining I had Australia Day and Easter orders due for next year!

I thought things were supposed to get easier as you get older, though the busier you are, the more you seem to do.

They say time flies, it only seemed like yesterday when the first Grandson was born and now he is about to turn six (going on 16!).

As usual the strawberry season is in full swing, as are pink lady apples, which are on good specials lately. So blueberries so when your in store, keep an eye out for all the fresh specials.

Also, we have added another 6-700 weekly specials to our grocery lines, on top of our normal range. Again, when you're in store, have a look around as I'm sure you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Now to sport. Only a couple weeks to the finals series!

Both the NRL and AFL teams are vying for a spot in the top 8 (top 4 preferably).
