PRODUCT – RANGE - DISTRIBUTION Statement of Intent Rationale (200 words) What do you want to do and why? An overarching statement of the direction of your own design practice, areas of interest and what this will allow you to explore……. AND WHY? Over the next year, I would really like to work on getting some portfolio pieces that represent my interests in typography and layouts. For a while now, I’ve wanted to do branding/identity designs, which will allow me to experiment with typography in a greater depth. Whilst on the subject of typography, I would also like to create my own typeface. I really enjoyed this when creating the ‘contour type’ in the visual language module in the first year, and would like to have another go having much more experience and knowledge behind me. Layout and editorial design has been of huge interest to me, and is something I would potentially like to persue after this course. I would like to be more creative with my designs and carry out a project to the very end where I actually print and bind the publication. I also would like to get the opportunity to work with packaging again. I really enjoyed the ‘what is good?’ packaging brief and feel I didn’t push that to its full potential. I want to work on creating a clean and professional finish through the use of simple design and print finishes. (including foil blocking, embossing etc.) Statement of Intent (200 words) What do you intend to do in order for you to fulfil your rationale, creative intentions and individual ambitions? PRODUCT – A logo identity RANGE – Applied to a range of promotional material DISTRIBUTION – Print based designs will be adapted and applied to a website What will you produce and what will you propose? I will create and design an identity/branding and apply this across a wide range of promotional material including posters, leaflets and a website. I intend to base this logo on a typeface that I will design, which will also be applied to the promotional material. Having to existing material, it’s fairly open in terms of design direction. Though I want it to look simple and clean, I intend for it be clever and well thought out.

BRIEF (200 words)
In order to achieve this what brief will you be responding to (attach a copy ) and how will this fulfil your intentions? In order to achieve this I will be completing the ‘Type Factory brief: design and create a branding/identity for a new museum/gallery, which will be applied to a range of promotional material. This will allow me to create an identity from scratch, as there isn’t any existing material. It will also give me the opportunity to learn more about the history of typography, which could then be applied to my design practice.
3.
RESEARCH
In responding to this brief what areas of research will you have to undertake? What activities will this involve? What material will this research generate? PRIMARY SOURCES/MATERIAL SECONDARY SOURCES/MATERIAL The internet will be my main source of research, looking at blogs, google books, design agency websites, etc. I will be researching other design galleries and general museums, looking into their promotional material and methods of how they get people in. I will contact these museums via email, and visit local galleries, in order to find out and collect as much as I can. I will be looking at a lot of typography books as knowledge on the history of typography will be necessary. 4.
PRACTICAL DEVELOPMENT
In responding to this brief what practical skills, workshop facilities and production methods will you use? What activities will this involve? At what point in the brief will you use them? What will they help you to acheive? I would really like to look into print finishes, such as foil blocking and embossing, however, this obviously might not be relevant and depends on how the brief pans out. Screen-printing is also something I’ve been wanting to do for some time. Again, this is something that may not be necessary. Photoshop and Illustrator will be used when creating my designs, but I plan to work by hand first, so this will hopefully just come in towards the final stages. 5.
RECORDING, DOCUMENTATION & EVALUATION
What methods will you use to record , document and evaluate your progress practical and contextual investigations in response to this brief? How will you get feedback? How and when will you evaluate your progress and what will you evaluate your progress against? I will constantly be updating my blog in order to record my thoughts and general progress, aiming for at least one blog post a day, spending about half an hour on it. In terms of how I will get feedback, I will talking to other students on a regular basis, along with tutors, getting as much advice and feedback as I can.
