Public feedback sought on dam wall reconstruction

Wedding Celebrations

Seqwater is seeking feedback on the potential impacts of its plan to increase the height of the dam wall at Lake Macdonald.

This will be the first major upgrade of the dam since the walls were raised in 1980.

It will involve building a new spillway and reconstructing the existing earth embankments to better protect the dam against earthquakes and extreme floods.

Any feedback you provide will form part of the Impact Assessment Report (IAR), which is required by the Coordinator-General under the State Development and Public Works Organisation Act 1971.

Areas of impact to be assessed include, but are not limited to, traffic, noise, dust, water quality, recreation, cultural heritage, and ecology.

About 150 people, including guests who travelled as far away as South Australia and Victoria attended the wedding of Dr Ann Buchan and Colleen Brosnan in Pomona’s Cooroora Creek Park on Saturday 29 August, followed by a reception at the Pomona Memorial Hall.

Member for Noosa, Sandy Bolton MP, has a link on her facebook page that depicts an interactive map that allows people to view and leave comment.

Pomona War Memorial restoration to proceed Restoration of Pomona’s WWI rotunda war memorial will proceed following an exchange of letters between the Noosa Shire Museum and Noosa Council about the nature of the works and how the project will proceed in time for a rededication service proposed for the evening of Sunday 11 November – the 100th anniversary of the signing of the Armistice.

The council stipulations include the requirement that the restoration occur under the guidance of a professional heritage architect, Mr Laurie Jones, who assisted Noosa Shire Museum with a Conservational Management Plan for the memorial.

The museum has received

Pomona War Memorial generous offers of support and in-kind services, but the most immediate need is to raise the necessary funds to pay Mr Jones for his professional services.

Those who wish to donate to the memorial restoration may contribute through an account opened at the Pomona Branch of Bendigo Bank - BSB: 633000 and Account No.: 1632 702 67.

The account is active and all contributions will be gratefully received.

Noosa Museum to hold annual general meeting The Noosa Shire Museum is preparing for its upcoming annual general meeting, marking a transformative 12 months for the institution, which has served Noosa for the past 33 years. The AGM date will be announced soon.

The Cooroora Historical Society operates the museum from the old Noosa Shire Chambers at Pomona, supported by an enthusiastic group of volunteers.

President of the management committee, Jeanette Alfredson, said the museum’s future direction was being guided by the findings of two recent assessments of operations and conservation practices.

“This has fed into our strategic planning and refocussing on the collection, its significance and the stories we seek to tell.

The museum remains the principal centre for historical research in Noosa Shire, evidenced by a marked resurgence in people’s desire to explore

their family tree,” Ms Alfredson said.

“This past year, the museum has engaged with services of Jeanette Alfredson, Ann President of the Podobnik as Cooroora Historical Operations Society, and Development Officer. Ann has arranged a number of seasonal exhibitions at the museum, allowing us to re -organise displays and bring from storage many items not normally seen.

‘Noosa-weddings through the ages’ was one of a series of exhibitions conducted this year by Noosa Shire Museum to showcase items from its extension collection.

Majestic Theatre presents the ‘Masters of Baroque’ The Arioso Chamber Ensemble brings its stylish performance of Baroque music to the historic Majestic Theatre, Pomona, on Sunday 19 August at 2.00pm.

ART PROJECT ASSESSORS SOUGHT Noosa Council is seeking new recruits to join its Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) Committee, which meets twice a year to recommend which arts projects should be funded under the joint council-state grants program.

The successful applicants also have an opportunity to be ambassadors who promote RADF funding opportunities to their creative networks and the broader community.

RADF Chair Councillor Jess Glasgow says applicants must have a keen interest, involvement or experience in the arts in order to be eligible.

“This includes everything from theatre and dance through to

writing, multimedia and visual art, as well as arts administration,” he said.

“So experience in developing cultural programs, managing arts events and facilities is useful.”

“Since 2014 the RADF program has provided more than $165,000 to assist more than 46 creative projects in Noosa,” Cr Glasgow said.

Local artist’s fascination for ‘litter critters’ Fiona Groom’s photobombing animals are recognisable wherever you see them. Its usually a couple of curious-looking animals ‘staring’ straight at you and you can’t help but grin.

The internationally known, Sunshine Coast artist sends her paintings all over the world for buyers, collectors and as fundraising tools for various animal welfare groups.

She knows the value of humour in raising awareness on animal conservation – and in her new body of work, Fiona’s looking much closer to home! ‘Unearth – a Secret Realm’ is an ode to the critters in leaf litter – and their essential role in our local ecosystem.

The exhibition is open until the 4 September at the Cooroy’s Butter Factory Arts Centre. Entry is free.

“The idea came as a personal response to land clearing and new subdivisions in our region,” Fiona said.

“I did some research to find out more about animals who are being directly affected - like the Northern Hoppy Mouse!

It’s listed as vulnerable in QLD but hasn’t been seen since the late 1800s’,” Fiona said. “It is a shy, quick little creature so it’s a combination of less numbers and, being hard to spot. But they are seen more regularly in the Northern Territory and across the top of Australia.”

Using her own reference images, Fiona has painted a whole new body of work drawing attention to these lesser known locals, and how we can nurture their neighbourhood.

New bridge for Cooran’s Old Noosa Road Mid-August marks the start of construction on a $1.5m replacement for the Old Noosa Road Bridge at Cooran, Noosa Council Infrastructure Services Director, Carl Billingham, announced recently.

Duo sets Pomona abuzz with new eats business A chance conversation while getting a tattoo applied led Jamie Ward and partner Tim Cairns to take on the challenge of transforming the Reserve Street business known previously as That Place at Pomona into The Buzz – Pomona’s new coffee house and, soon, a new evening eating venue for the town.

Although a full-time employee of Gympie Regional Council, he agreed to support Jamie in the new venture and assists in his spare time. The name The Buzz is a reference to their shared bee keeping venture on a rural property they own at Federal.

Budget commits funds to kindy and local parklands The Pomona Kindergarten and the districts parks and pathways are set for a facelift under the 2018-19 Budget adopted by Noosa Council, with some works scheduled to start immediately and others earmarked for the later years of the four-year planning horizon.

Pathways will be the priority at Pomona in 2022-23. The budget reveals that Pomona School Road pathway linkage planning and construction will cost an estimated $80,000, with a further $150,000 notionally allocated for Pomona pathways and pedestrian construction.

The kindergarten roof will be replaced in 201819, at a cost of $50,000. A further $35,000 will be spent refurbishing the basketball court in Stan Topper Park.

The missing link in the path network up Hill St and the first stage of a path along Reserve St towards the AFL ground are priorities within the forward planning.

In a separate move the council has flagged removal of the public toilets adjacent to the SES headquarters, also within Stan Topper Park. The toilets will not be replaced, however.

Meanwhile, Queensland Rail proposes to build a new cross-town path over the North Coast Railway Line in the first half of 2019.

Walkers pick up pace to tackle dance steps A walk with Pomona Pacers is not just about lycra, runners and sweat, as member Leonie explains.

It involves enjoying the forests and walkways through the natural environment that surrounds the town.

A near-town walk with a difference was a truly enjoyable morning for several Pomona Pacers members and some spouses recently.

Starting from Numby Lane, on the edge of town, the group walked through Yurol State Forest on fairly level tracks to where the bridle path links to Highfield Rise, and from there to the home of one of the members. Her husband had prepared a beautiful selection of savoury and sweet bites.

With the end of the road in sight and about to return, we came across a council crew, resurfacing an area of bitumen where the road rejoins the Old Bruce Highway. Quite a while ago, one of the pacers mentioned her wish to organise a Bush Dance with a caller, and, joining forces with another of the pacers, they brought the wish to life. With her family members, fellow Pomona Pacers, and friends taking over the Pomona Memorial Hall for a Saturday evening, which happened to be her birthday.

Cooroora Connect is an initiative of the Pomona & District Community House Inc. The material published in Cooroora Connect may be reproduced only with appropriate authorisation and acknowledgment.

Lions Recycle for Sight Australia is part of the Lions Clubs International Worldwide Eyeglass Recycling Program which collects used spectacles and sunglasses. The program cleans, grades and re-labels 450,000 pairs annually of used spectacles and sunglasses at our three centres in Queensland. The re-labelled end product is packed into boxes of 200 pairs, half of one prescription and 100 of the next higher prescription, under strict quality control rules.
