Brian Lawson retires Honorary Community House Manager, Brian Lawson, has been a stalwart of the Pomona and District Community House for the past 16 years and during this time has been successful in generating grant money to the value of $800,000 for the House and other projects, including the Pomona Men’s Shed.

Another huge achievement that Brian was passionate about was a multi-functional space that catered for the needs of the growing community to hold meetings and activities.

With this in mind and with the help of grants, sponsors and local tradies this dream became reality.

Noosa Landcare records spectacular year The chairman of Noosa and District Landcare, Luke Barrowcliffe, has declared the 2017-18 financial year the most successful in the 33-year history of the conservation and environmental protection organisation, which recorded an annual turnover of almost $2 million.

Few know it, but Landcare is the second-largest employer in Pomona.

“We have significantly bolstered the policies, procedures and processes of the business and this, in no small way, is part of the reason behind our success,” Mr Barrowcliffe said in his annual report chairman’s address.

“Income totalled $1.94 million, representing annual growth of 18 per cent in an environment where grant money was scarce”, said treasurer Dick Barnes. Despite this, Noosa Landcare had a 60 per cent success rate with grant applications. Total new grant and tender funds approved in 2017-18 totalled $1.5 million. In a shift away from

Food collective group forms at Cooran

by Melanie Weaver Can you imagine a village in the hinterland where local agriculture and food systems have been revitalised, nourishing and connecting the community?

Would you appreciate cooking a meal with ingredients picked that morning by people you might pass on the street?

Could you see the advantages in having a zero packaging bulk food store in Cooran that links directly to Australian farmers and reduces your trips to Noosa?

All of this and more are the focus of a new community group, the Cooran Food Collective.

Starting with small fortnightly meetings and liaison with council, farmers and businesses, the Collective is working toward achieving real and lasting benefits for the Cooran community and surrounds.

In the new year, ordering locally grown produce from Mary Valley Fresh will be scaled up to serve anyone from Cooran. This produce is grown under spray-free methods and delivered the day it is picked, providing higher

quality produce than the supermarkets for a similar price.

Currently the group is seeking a venue for dropoff and collection on Thursday afternoons.

It is also working to connect available resources that might otherwise go to waste.

The group would like to here from landholders with unused fertile land that could be connected to aspiring market gardeners.

Additionally, underutilised fruit and nut trees in the district are being identified for future community use.

Bendigo’s Geoff Edwards hangs up his abacus He’s one of the most well-know faces in the hinterland, but after 40 years in the banking industry, Geoff Edwards has decided to retire.

He is pictured below (left in picture) with Allen Henderson, MC at the Noosa Country Show.

Since early 2013, Geoff has been involved in management of the Cooroy and Pomona Community Bank branches of Bendigo Bank and has been unfaltering in his commitment to the hinterland and his customers.

“I’ve had some great opportunities during my career in banking, but using my role to make a difference to community groups, clubs, organisations and schools in the hinterland has been the highlight,” Geoff shared.

Geoff said it was the right time to retire and he’s very relaxed with his decision.

“I’m not going anywhere and my plan is simple. I’m looking forward to more time at home and more time for the special things with my wife and family, and to play some more golf,” he added.

Art teachers squeeze in creative ‘me’ time Heading into its eighth iteration since 2005, ‘[SQUEEZE]’, a showcase of works by 29 Sunshine Coast art teachers, opened at Cooroy’s Butter Factory Arts Centre (BFAC) last month.

Named for the notion that art teachers need to squeeze in time for their own practice, the exhibition reveals the talents of our region’s educators, outside the classroom.

Ben Hedstrom, the head of department at St Andrews Anglican College in Peregian Springs and Archibald Prize finalist, made headlines with his portrait of the band The Boy and Bear in 2012.

The art teachers of the Sunshine Coast display their work at the Butter Factory, Cooroy.

Painted entirely in the classroom, as an example to his students of where dedicated creation can lead, Hedstrom was shocked when it was announced a finalist in the country’s biggest portrait prize.

Continuing the theme, he delivered the piece to the Art Gallery of NSW during a school excursion.

Now based on the Sunshine Coast, his dedication continues.

“The main reason for maintaining my practice has been to inspire my students in their work,” Hedstrom said. “I’m always challenging them to aspire to great things with their artmaking.

“If I’m leading by example by producing artwork and continuing

Storytelling with a twist at the Butter Factory With work instantly recognised in Sunshine Coast’s creative circuit, Dale Leach could’ve delivered something expected for her ninth solo show.

Her landscapes of Noosa Hinterland are hugely popular; her work is regularly commissioned internationally and one of her pieces hangs in pride of place at the Sunshine Coast mayoral offices.

Speaking from her studio in the final week before Twisted Tales opened at Cooroy’s Butter Factory Arts Centre, Dale Leach is sweating just a bit.

“I mean, if this was someone else’s studio, I’d walk in here and see colour,” she says, surveying her Doonan studio. “I’d see humour and something a little bit fresh and pop-ey.”

Twisted Tales is no Dale Leach landscape show. It’s vibrant, lively and unpredictable.

“I feel like I’ve definitely stuck my neck out a bit

with this subject matter,” Leach said. The subject to which she refers is nursery rhymes, and their sometimes dark origins.

“It all started when we had a food van, which we ran for 13 years.

“One of the women I really got to know was studying 19th century scientists and she had this book on the secret histories of nursery Sunshine Coast Artist, Dale Leach is presenting her latest exhibirhymes. It grew from tion, Twisted Tales, at the Cooroy Butter Factory. there.”

Through her own copy of that book, and two or three more reference books later, the stories were literally bouncing around in Leach’s imagination.

“All my work has stories attached. That element isn’t new to this show.

I’m painting, and I’m twisting them.”

‘Twisted Tales’ opened 30 November at BFAC in Cooroy. Entry is free. All welcome. Dale will be hosting school holiday workshops for children in December, on show until 23 December.

Players present a night at the museum Gold Coast theatre director Nathan Schulz is ‘making waves’ – radio waves that is – and is returning to the Noosa Museum with a back to the future style show that celebrates one of our grandparents’ favourite entertainments.

Schulz, who is a familiar talent on the Gold Coast’s community theatrical scene, is whisking audiences back to the golden age of radio drama with The Radioplay Hour.

“Listening to a radioplay is a ‘retro audio experience’ that aims to transport audiences to an age when radio was the heart of family life,” he said. “In this case, the actors perform the original radioplay scripts in front of a live audience, creating all the sound effects live.”

Performers of The Radioplay Hour: A Christmas Carol rehearse their performance, which will take place at the Noosa Shire Museum on 15 December.

“From first printing, reading or watching, A Christmas Carol has become an unbroken tradition each Christmas.

“So now, under the Drama Merchant’s Imaginasium brand, my cast aims to present and work with the Noosa Museum, in creating a unique Christmas experience in front of a radio, instead of a television, phone or I-Pad.

Pomona War Memorial rededication

ABOVE: The commemorative light has been missing from the Pomona War Memorial for an estimated 35 years. On Remembrance Day, 11 November, it was restored in its brass bracket, using a 1930s light fitting donated to the Noosa Shire Museum by the Uniting Church.

Val Lawrence-Slater dressed as a WWI nurse for the memorial re-dedication service. She is pictured with the guest speaker at the commemorative dinner, Maj. Gen. (Ret.) John Cantwell, of Cooroy, who spoke of the legacy of the WWI Armistice to a 21st Century Australia.

Anthony Dein, of ARC Electrical Maintenance (above) rewired the memorial and ensured that the light installation met all safety standards.

The Waler horse breed, used by mounted cavalry in WWI and WWII, was a feature of the parade, boots reversed in the stirrups in reverence to the fallen.

LET THERE BE LIGHT The restored commemorative light, donated by the Uniting Church Pomona, was a labour of love for those who worked on it, especially electrician Anthony Dein.

Due to the age of the light fitting, the journey towards restoring the light certainly wasn’t an easy task. Two organisations helped with the task.

The Men's Shed Pomona drew upon its members’ lathe and turning skills to ensure the new cables rod could be anchored into the rotunda and old copper light fitting. The Light House Noosa sourced the very realistic flaming LED light bulb and also helped with sourcing the rare and unusual parts that were needed to get this special light shining again.

Launch of ‘Disaster Dashboard’ Noosa Council has launched a new, one-stop shop for reliable emergency information when disaster strikes.

Noosa Council, in partnership with TransLink and Sunbus, are providing FREE public transport on selected bus routes.

Known as ‘Disaster Dashboard’, it brings together useful information from all of the agencies involved in disaster management to help residents make quick, but informed, decisions during cyclones, floods, fires and other disasters.

It may be accessed via the website disaster.noosa.qld.gov.au.

It’s official: Pomona Pacers can walk on water

by Leonie Yes, it’s official – Pomona Pacers can walk on water. Five members of the popular walking group took the opportunity to join a sunset cruise on the Noosa River recently.

For the fifth year, Noosa River and Canal Cruises have held this event, with a portion of ticket sales donated to breast cancer research.

With BYO drinks and nibbles circulating and commentary and good music accompaniment, the 90min. cruise began with a leisurely view of the setting sun before cruising to the canals of Noosa Sound.

More recently, Ringtail Creek and Porters Roads were the venue for an enjoyable near-town walk. Cool and shady in the early morning, whipbirds and bellbirds could be heard among the chatter and laughter of the nine walkers. This was followed by a delicious morning tea at the nearby home of one of the walkers.

The Pacers were lucky to strike a day that was cool for November on the excursion walk at Noosa Heads, which was very much enjoyed by the seven attendees.

Beginning at the river mouth, the route followed a shady footpath to Hastings Street, then the sunny boardwalk along Main Beach and then to the newly-reopened vastly-

In the immortal words of Dory: ‘Just keep swimming’ Recently, the Cooroy Dolphins had their annual Twilight Swimming Carnival, their largest fundraiser for the year.

Incredibly, 24 clubs from the Wide Bay region attended, spanning from Bundaberg to Redcliffe.

Held in picture-perfect Spring conditions, the carnival gave 38 Cooroy Dolphin participants a great opportunity to give their best in a competitive environment.

Former Masonic Lodge to become fitness centre Pomona’s former Masonic Lodge is to become a fitness centre under plans that will re-purpose the heritage-listed building and substantially boost healthy exercise opportunities for existing and new clients of E-Fitness Cooroy, which will move to the building early in December.

The operation will be rebranded E-Fitness Pomona, according to proprietor and fitness instructor Erin Yarwood, with the move brought about by the sale of her existing rented premises above the popular Maison de Provence restaurant at Cooroy.

Over the years, Erin has worked in almost all of the gyms in Cooroy and Noosa and she spent a year overseas working as a fitness professional in Dubai. For more than four years, she worked with physiotherapists as a rehabilitation assistant at the Eden Rehabilitation Hospital, Cooroy.

Hot property The last three months have seen a major increase in reported property offences in the Pomona Police Division and the coast generally, namely stolen vehicles and break and enters of houses and other premises.

These offences can be targeted, but are also often opportunistic in nature, with the offenders visiting rural properties and houses.

They check if owners are home and then steal vehicles and tools, and household goods. Some of the stolen cars are ‘re-birthed’ with new registration plates and identifying particulars, and often on-sold to criminal associates and unsuspecting individuals. No doubt, some of these offences are committed to sell or barter the stolen items in order to service drug habits and related debts, as there has also been a marked increase in methamphetamine drug usage in the hinterland.

Lions Recycle for Sight Australia is part of the Lions Clubs International Worldwide Eyeglass Recycling Program which collects used spectacles and sunglasses.

The program cleans, grades and re-labels 450,000 pairs annually of used spectacles and sunglasses at our three centres in Queensland.

The re-labelled end product is packed into boxes of 200 pairs, half of one prescription and 100 of the next higher prescription, under strict quality control rules.
