For the next two years, Cumberland County and Stone Memorial will be in Region 3-4A with Livingston, Chattanooga Central, East Hamilton, Chattanooga Hixson and Sequoyah, with the seven-member league meeting for the first time July 29 for their media day at Chattanooga's Findley Stadium. First-year CCHS coach Ken Johnson was the first to speak to the media. "I am super excited about this season. We will get good at what we do. There are 24 seniors on the team. They

are doing a fabulous job. The program is reaching for success," he said. "I feel like we can compete in this district. We will put our best feet forward and don't talk about the past. We challenge them. We will be no longer a door mat (in the region). We will go as our seniors go." CCHS returns 31 players from last season, including 24 lettermen and 18 starters. There are 19 seniors, six juniors, 14 sophomores and 15 freshmen on the roster of 45-50 players. He will be assisted by Frank Johnson (offensive coordinator), Bob Johnson (defensive coordinator), Stuart Bowen (defensive line), Alec Haston (offen-

sive line), Blake Allen (wide receivers), Andrew Phipps (defensive backs), Marty Davis (running backs) and Don Haston (linebackers). The Jets have a playoff record of 1-4, including a loss to akland in the 5A playoffs in 2002. Livingston coach Bruce Lamb followed Johnson to the podium. "It was good to see everyone. Look forward to playing in this region. It will be more competitive," said Lamb, who returns 40 lettermen from last year's 11-2 overall and 6-0 district mark. There are See SMHS, page 2C

Panthers seek third-straight winning season The Stone Memorial Panthers are looking to post three straight winning seasons for the first time since the 1960s in Cumberland County. Coach Mark Wattenbarger's team have qualified for the playoffs the last two years and four of the first six seasons and will be competing in Region 3-4A with CCHS, Livingston, Chattanooga Hixson, Chattanooga Central, East Hamilton and Sequoyah, after a couple of years in District 6AAA with CCHS, Rhea County, White County, Cookeville and Warren County. This years team has several returning starters and has good numbers in the senior and juniors classes. Quarterback Austin Helton returns after leading the Panthers last year. He completed 34 of 71 passes for 490 yards with eight touchdowns and rushed for 470 yards on 99 carries with four touchdowns

Helton was an all district performer last year and will be looking to repeat. Joining Helton in the backfield is the schools leading rusher (2700+) and a twotime District 6AAA Back of the Year Justin Johnson, who rushed for 1,472 yards with 17 touchdowns as a junior. "Justin is bigger and stronger than last year and has some help in the backfield in seniors Carlos Barnette and Keith Sadula. Carlos and Keith have been playing on Fridays since their freshman year so experience is definitely on their side," added Wattenbarger, whose team finished 6-5 overall and 3-2 in District 6AAA last season. Barnette rushed for 194 on 40 carries with two TDs, while Sadula had 14 yards on seven carries. Junior Ethan Pierce and sophomore Cody Wyllins are the team's fastest players and will also help Johnson in the backfield.

Senior Chandler VanNatter is a returning starter on both sides of the ball and was an All District Tight End last year. He caught 15 passes for 279 yards with three TDs. "Chandler has really good hands and has a high football IQ," added the veteran Panther coach. Seniors Shade Foster, Ben Kindred and Alec Moore anchor the offensive line "Alec and Ben are previous starters, but Shade may have the biggest upside," said Wattenbarger. Ben Tollett returns at tight end after missing most of last year with an injury. Nathan Stine returns at inside linebacker. "Nathan is a very smart linebacker. He's responsible for getting us lined up right and checking us into or out of adjustments. I think our defense is in very good hands," Wattenbarger said. Anthony Conley will

• Continued from 1C four offensive starters and two defensive starters on his roster. He will be assisted by Curtis Beaty, Dale Flatt, Brannon McCoin and Tyler Livingston. "We are new to Chattanooga and unfamiliar with some of the teams," said Lamb, whose team has played Chattanooga Hixson and Stone Memorial in the past. "It will be interesting. We will do a lot of hard work to get back to 11-2 and will be very young. Practice has been good. Our strength will be depth in skill positions and weakness in the line. We lost a lot of offensive and defensive linemen." The Wildcats have a 17-17 playoff record, including 2-1 mark in the playoffs last year and the 2005 3A state championship. SMHS coach Mark Wattenbarger was third on the agenda. According to Murphy Fair's Tennessee High School football, Wildcat running back Dylan Linder, defensive backs William Phillips and Pete Hollars, and defensive line Rutger Reitmaier were named PreSeason 4A All-State. "We have been in three districts since 2006. I have coached against Ted Gatewood (East Hamilton), Bruce (Livingston)

and Dan Duff (Hixson). I played against Ken's dad (Frank at Oliver Springs)," said the veteran Panther Coach, who was accompanied by four of his seniors, Chandler VanNatter, Justin Johnson, Nathan Stine and Keith Sadula from last year's team which finished 6-5 overall and 3-2 in the district. The remaining seniors on the roster are Austin Helton, Anthony Conley, Carlos Barnette, Ben Kindred, Shade Foster and Ben Tollett, while there are 17 juniors and 13 sophomores. Johnson was District 6AAA Runningback of the Year, while Helton was All-District second team, VanNatter was the District 6AAA Tight End of the Year and Sadula was second team All-District. "We have a lot of twoway players. I look forward to this new region. We will line up and see what we can do," he said. "Our strength will a lot of experience. We will be short on lineman." There will be six offensive and seven defensive starters from last year's 6-5 team. Wattenbarger will be assisted by Clarence Holloway, Matt Bates, Brandon Ashby, Elbert Farley, Trenton Stokes and Mike Head. The Panthers have a 0-3 playoff record, including back-to-back 5A losses to Ooltewah in 2013 and 2014. Ted Gatewood is the East

Hamilton head coach and will be assisted by Steve Garland, Gerald Jones, Sam Norman, Chuck Bronson, Jeff Fairbanks, Hunter Ottinger, Dedrick Maffett, Jonathan Eaves and Bobby Rush. "We are excited about being in the new region," he said. "It is always great to get out of Chattanooga. I am excited about that. I hope we are well prepared." There are 72 players listed on the roster (20 seniors, 33 juniors, 18 sophomores and one freshman). According to Murphy Fair, the Hurricanes were picked to share the region title with Hixson and were in the playoffs in 2013, losing to 21-14 to Cleveland in the 5A quarterfinals. They are a 4-3 playoff mark, which includes a 2012 4A quarterfinal loss and the 5A quarterfinal loss in 2013. Gary Bloodshaw is the first-year head coach at Chattanooga Central and will be assisted by Glenn Carter, Steve Plemons,

provide depth at receiver and starts for us at outside linebacker. He had 11 tackles (five solos, six assists). "Anthony has been a definite plus this fall and playing as well as anyone defensively," the Panther coach said. Senior Cameron Weaver has joined the Panthers as a placekicker. Junior Curtis Tollett was the leading tackler last year and returns at Inside linebacker. He had 69 total tackles (29 solos, 40 assists). Junior Jamie Nichols returns at noseman after a very successful sophomore season. He had 27 tackles (14 solos, 13 assists, two sacks) Junior Keith Martin adds a speed factor up front defensively. Junior Ronnie Wyllins brings starting experience to our secondary. Junior Austin Seiber has had a great fall and is competing for a lot of playing time at linebacker and fullback. Junior Dylon Dishman starts at safety for the second year. Juniors Rylin Morgan, Lucas Coleman and Spencer Pugh will see starting action in the offensive line. Junior Hunter Pelfrey is competing for time in the defensive line. Dylan Greenwood is also a junior that will help in the backfield. Also look for Junior

Billy Joe Phipps to help in the offensive and defensive lines. "I think our teams strength is experience. We've had a couple of years with low numbers in the senior class so some of these seniors have had to play for a couple of years already," Wattenbarger continued. "There are always concerns with depth. Getting sophomores ready to fill in when needed is a big focus early on. Practicing to keep players healthy but also keeping them sharp physically is a very thin line. I like the pace we practice at and our senior leadership. I think we have

Stan Eller and Cliff Morgan. The Purple Pounders were 6-5 overall and 3-3 in district play last season and return 20 lettermen. "We focus on what's inside us and have been working hard in the offseason. We will work on mental toughness, will be well-coached and well disciplined and bring a new culture at Central," said Bloodshaw, whose team has four offensive and four defensive starters. "We will have a new offensive and defense. Our strength will be a skill athletes. We have no depth in the offensive line. We will hungry defensively." Hixson is coached by Dan Duff, who begins his 32nd year of coaching. According to Fair, Duff's assistants are Charles Weems, Danny Wiseman, Gary Murray, Brian Bray, Steve Daffron, D'Angelo Paris and Andy Duncan. The Wildcats lost 21-20 to Livingston in the Class 4A playoffs last season

and have an overall playoff record of 4-9, including a 2013 4A quarterfinal loss to Knox Catholic 14-13. Hixson was 9-3 last season, including a 1-1 record in the playoffs. "We have a young team, but we have a great nucleus of returning players to build around. Team works hard and knows what it take to be successful. I am glad to be here and look forward to the new region," said Duff, who has played against Gatewood and Cumberland County in the past. "Central has been our rival. We lost a lot of good players last year. They're excited. Our strength is up front and our weakness is depth. Murphy Fair's Tennessee High School Football has offensive lineman listed as preseason Class 4A All-State.

a chance to be competitive in every game. I don't think our schedule has anybody on it that we can't beat but at the same time if we don't play well I think anyone of them could beat us also. I worry about our toughest opponent more than anything and that's ourselves. We can't do things to beat ourselves. We have to make the other guys do things to beat us without any help from us. The SMHS managers are, not in order, Taylor Barnwell, Gracee Morgan and Kali Cunningham.

Sequoyah is the seventh member of Region 3-4A, but did not attend the media day in Chattanooga. The Chiefs were 3-7 last season and are coached by Bobby White, who is assisted by Jason Hammontree, Jeremiah Coffeit and John Wiggins, according to Murphy Fair. White replaced longtime Coach Bill Satterfield who retired last April. Sequoyah has 4-8 playoff record, including a 4A second round loss to Hixson in 2013 and a 3A quarterfinal loss to Portland in 1999. They have seven returning starters offensively and six on defense. Kicker Aaron White is a pre-season All-State pick by Fair's Tennessee High School football magazine.

Wattenbarger leads Panther coaching staff in 2015 By Ed Greif

Chronicle sports editor

When the Stone Memorial Panther football team opens the 2015 season at York Institute, the coaching staff will have some minor changes for Coach Mark Wattenbarger. He will be assisted by Clarence Holloway, Matt Bates, Brandon Ashby, Elbert Farley, Trenton Stokes and Michael Head and has added Katherine Durham to the staff as athletic trainer. Wattenbarger is entering his seventh year as head coach. He has led the panthers to four playoff appearances during the first six years. Before coming to Stone he led CCHS to three playoff appearances including tying for the district title in 2002. He also led Stone’s track team to 10 individual state medals and two individual state championships in four years as the track coach. He and his wife, Kim, have two sons, Brady, 20, a student at Tennessee Tech, who left Stone as the schools

all-time leading passer, and Majer, 16, a member of the Panthers football team. Holloway has returned to the sidelines this year as Stone’s defensive coordinator. "Clarence has over 35 years of coaching experience at a very successful Rockwood program. A definite asset to our staff and a great resource to use not just knowledge of the game but with handling of teenagers also, " said Wattenbarger. Matt Bates begins his sixth year with the Panthers and is offensive coordinator and offensive line coach. “Matt’s experience and our continuity and how we do things is getting better and better each year. It’s definitely an asset when I can say one or two words and he knows what I’m gonna say. He’s at the point of seeing things before I do sometimes and getting more and more comfortable with my philosophy," added Wattenbarger. Ashby is entering his third year with year with the Panthers and is the defensive back coach.

"Brandon’s understanding and passion for learning more about the game is really high. I couldn’t be happier with a young coach," said Wattenbarger. Farley is also back with the Panthers. He has been a veteran of the sidelines in Cumberland County in several capacities and has teamed up with Wattenbarger for some very successful seasons and numerous playoff seasons. "It’s great having someone who puts his ego aside for the good of the team and having a veteran helping with the development of our younger kids," added Wattenbarger. Farley is a member of the Cumberland County Commission from the seventh district. Trenton Stokes is entering his fourth year helping the Panther freshmen. "Trent’s willingness to absorb everything he can from every possible resource is unmatched. Trent’s growth as a football coach is a testament to his character, I couldn’t be happier with what Trent does

Mike Head is entering his second year with the Panthers. He works with outside linebackers and helps with the offensive line. "Mike has been willing to do any assignment asked of him and pours himself into it. He had a good first year and is adapting even

better this year," added Wattenbarger. Glenn Thompson of Benchmark Physical Therapy worked out the details and was generous enough to supply us with her as a trainer. "I couldn't be happier to have Katherine at our school. We now have a pro-

fessional to deal with all the bangs and bruises and also to deal with the more serious injuries professionally. This is something that is about 20 years behind in this county, and I can't thank Glenn enough for providing this service," concluded Wattenbarger.

Jets will be competing in Region 3-4A this year By Ed Greif

Chronicle sports editor

When the Cumberland County High School Jet footballs team opens the 2015 season at Oliver Springs, the squad will heading into a new region under first-year coach Ken Johnson, who came to the Plateau from Walker Valley High School where he served as assistant head coach and co-offensive coordinator for the past eight seasons. "My staff and I are looking forward to a new beginning at CCHS. The Jets are in the process of undergoing a culture change with the help of the seniorloaded roster. I have been impressed with the leadership of the Jet locker room throughout the offeseason," he said. Johnson brings two additions to his staff in his father, Frank Johnson, former head coach at Oliver Springs High School for 17 years, and his brother, Bob, who has been in coaching for 14 years. They join holdover coaches Andrew

Phipps, Alec and Donald Haston, Marty Davis, Blake Allen and Stuart Bowen. That group wants to improve on an 0-10 overall mark and 0-5 district mark in 2014 and has 31 returnees on the roster, including 18 starters. Johnson to lead CCHS in new direction in 2015 By Ed Greif Sports editor

When the Cumberland County High School Jets open the 2015 football campaign, Ken Johnson will be leading the team into a direction — a new region with Stone Memorial, Livingston, Sequoyah, Hixson, East Hamilton and Chattanooga Central. Frank Johnson and Bob Johnson, Ken's father and brother, join holdover assistant coaches Blake Allen, Marty Davis, Stuart Bowen, Donald Haston, Alec Haston and Andrew Phipps. Ken Johnson was a member of the Walker Valley High School staff for eight years, where he served as assistant head coach and co-offensive coordinator. Prior to joining the Mustang staff, he spent three years at the University of Tennessee, where he worked with every aspect of the football program under former head coach Phillip Fulmer. He was raised in a football family, as his father was the head coach at Oliver Springs High School for 17 years. He decided at an early age that he wanted to continue the family tradition. Coming out of high school, he had scholarship offers to play football, but wanted to get a head start on his coaching career by attending UT and getting involved with the football program. Blake Allen is in his seventh year as wide receiver

The Cumberland County High School Jets golf team hopes to build on the success of last season with an exciting mix of veterans and young talent when the team opened the season July 27 against Rhea County at Dayton Country Club. The team looks to build on a 35-21 record from 2014 and returns four of its top players from last season. CCHS finished third in the District 6AAA Tournament last season and advanced into the Region 3AAA Tournament. The 2015 team looks to contend for one of the top three spots this season. The Jets have the experience needed to contend and expectations are high. "Our team goal each year is to finish in the top three at the district tournament. That makes everyone contributing for the team to succeed. We are looking for each player to work hard, focus on the process and play to their ability level. We have a chance to be successful," said Coach Randy Herring. The Jets return seniors Jordan Graham and Andrew Brown. Graham led the team last year with a 78.8 average. He also advanced to the TSSAA State Tournament. Brown was the team's Most Improved Player last season. His average was 84.2 and played the fourth spot last season. "I look for Jordan to be one of the top golfers in District 6AAA this season. His game is solid and he has the experience. I think he can have a special season

for the Jets. Andrew is still improving and has played a lot of competitive golf since last season. He is primed for a productive senior season," said Herring. Junior Chandler Shelton and sophomore Zach Young will be counted on to provide consistant scoring. "Zach had a solid freshmen season with an 82.2 average. He has very good mechanics and loves to play. His biggest challenge is the mental side of the game. He showed signs last year, so I know he is capable. He can be a difference maker," said Herring. "Chandler will compete for the fifth spot. He has improved since last season. He played much better golf on the Golf Capital Jr. Tour this summer. Both players will play a big role in the team's success and are capable of posting good scores." Sophomore Jordan Burgess will also be in the mix for the fifth and/or sixth spot this season. "He played 13 rounds last season and now realizes the commitment it takes to be competitive. This group will counted on this season," Herring added. Freshmen Hogan Herring and Justin Reed round out the team. "Hogan enters this season as one of the most experienced junior golfs to play in the Jets program. He has the ability to be very competitive and will make a big contribution to this year's team. His biggest challenge See GOLF, page 9C

Lady Jets volleyball looking to expand 2015 success The Lady Jets volleyball team is once again ready to begin another season. After a very exciting season that saw them bounce Stone Memorial from the District 6AAA tournament in the first round before falling to Cookeville, the team is looking to expand on those accomplishments. The team has worked very hard over the summer to improve skills and come together as a team. Head Coach Don Smith leads the coaching staff with assistants Roger Dixon and Tom Pritchard. "We lost some great young ladies to graduation last year but some young players have worked hard to fill those holes,” said Smith. Four seniors will return for their final season for the Lady Jets. Cheyanne Frazee, last years offensive player of the year, will play outside hitter. She had 166 kills. Sadie Bowman will return as libero and was the 2014 Defensive Player of the Year, recording 222 digs. Shelby Kilby will make a move to right side. An offseason of dedication places Lindsey Sherrill at middle blocker. A versatile and experienced group of juniors return this season including Lily Barnes playing setter. She was JV Co-MVP with 19 aces, 31 kills, 76 assists and 21 digs.

Coming off of an offseason of hard work, Brianah Castleberry will play middle blocker. Julia Hively will be a back row specialist, as well as back up setter. Maddie Bernabei, healthy after a summer injury, will be playing middle hitter. She set a single season record with 58 aces. Returning junior varsity MVP Alana Hicks will be playing outside hitter leading the sophomore class. She recorded 63 kills and 24 aces. Becca Jones, showing great offseason commitment, will be moving to a new position of setter. She was junior varsity Defensive Player of the Year after recording 41 digs. Jordan Dixon made remarkable progress since the end of last season and will improve the team at libero. Amelia Hawkins will continue her role at outside hitter. A promising newcomer, Bailey Mueller will play middle blocker. Only four freshmen joined the team this season. Rebekah Smith will be playing outside hitter. Morgan Tays will be playing right side. Whitney Miller and Heaven Netherton will be working as defensive specialists. “Expectations have been raised and we all anticipate very exciting things from these ladies this season,” said Pritchard.

According to Herring, Cookevile is clearly the favorite to repeat as district champions. They may have their best group ever this season and the Cavaliers' future is bright for the next three years. After Cookeville, the district is wide open. Three teams will

CCHS cheerleaders ready to show their Jet pride Received numerous awards at UCA Camp

The Cumberland County High School cheerleaders are excited and ready to support the Jets in the 2015-'16 season. The Varsity squad is made up of 22 members this year. Of those 22 they have 14 returning members and nine of those being seniors. Leading their squad as seniors this year are Allyna Kerley, Taonna Miller, Haley Plenert, Danyelle Ashburn, Becca Patton, Hannah Colton, Kierstin Haynes, Kayla Spieles and Jade Iles. Returning members are Kaitlyn Lee, Kassie Looschen, Emily Shields, Rhianna Mann and Celsey Holt. New members to the squad are Samira Allaf, Jessie Blalock, Cassidy Wyatt and Taylor Sims. The CCHS cheerleaders are very excited to return as a co-ed team for the 2015'16 season. Caleb Jones, Tyler Evans, Joseph Brown and Dylan Wyatt will be adding some excitement and power to the team with hopes of the team returning to Nationals this year. The CCHS Varsity squad enjoyed a week packed full of fun and excitement at UCA Cheer Camp at TTU on June 2–5. The Varsity squad went into the first day fired up with spirit and ready to rock cheer camp. Their outgoing spirit was rewarded by the being the cheer squad to bring home the famous “UCA Spirit Banana”. Pirate boats and costumes came out in a spirit filled “Ship Wrecked Rally” on Thursday afternoon. The UCA staff enjoyed a pirate adventure with CCHS cheerleaders. Hard work and dedication paid off as the CCHS squads brought home numerous awards and honors. Caleb Jones showed off his jumping skills as he was crowned Jump Off King of the Camp. Six CCHS cheerleaders were named to the All American UCA Cheer Squad; Allyna Kerley, Jade Iles, Taonna Miller, Kayla Spieles, Caleb Jones and Joseph Brown.

Those cheerleaders are invited to participate in the New Year’s Day Parade in London, England. The Jets took home First Place Over All Camp Champs Extreme Routine, First Place Game Day, Runner up in Varsity Cheer Division, Superior Overall Performance, Superior Home Pom Routine, Superior Fight Song Performance and the UCA Leadership award. UCA continued the “Pin it Forward” program this summer. UCA created this program to promote all of the values developed through cheerleading like leadership, spirit, commitment, kindness and motivation. As part of Pin it Forward, each UCA instructor passed out a card with two pins to cheerleaders who they think possess these skills on day one. On day two, those cheerleaders passed their extra pin onto another cheerleader from a different school possessing those traits. At the end of the camp, all of the cheerleaders who received a pin were recognized. From the CCHS squad the following cheerleaders received pins; Taonna Miller, Caleb Jones, Katilyn Lee and Allyna Kerley. Four of the CCHS seniors received a huge honor the final day of camp. Jade Iles, Kayla Spieles, Taonna Miller and Allyna Kerley all received invitation to try out for a position on the UCA staff. Selected based on their skill, knowledge, experience and teaching ability, the UCA staff are trained to bring out the best in each cheerleader. “This is a huge acknowledgement for these young ladies and we are so excited for them to have this opportunity” said Coach Melissa Kerley. There are a variety of awards handed out on the final day, but the one campers always strive for is the Leadership Award. What makes this award unique is that the award isn’t chosen by the staff, it is cho-

When the squads are voting, the instructors will tell the campers to think of a squad at camp that you would want to be on. The Leadership Award is something that is seen as a huge honor to the UCA staff. It is seen that way because the teams who get this award are the ones who are doing what all cheerleaders should be doing: showing school spirit while being friendly to others. SMHS cheerleaders are excited about 2015-’16 The SMHS Cheerleaders are excited about upcoming fall sports under the leadership of second-year coach Nicole Graham. Graham graduated from Cumberland County High School in 1995 and continued her education at Tennessee Technological University in Cookeville where she graduated with a Bachelor Degree in Education in 2008. Graham is currently working toward a Masters Degree in Elementary Education from The University of Tennessee in Chattanooga. She is in her seventh year of teaching at Stone Elementary School and has been teaching Kindergarten for the last five years. She has coached varsity cheerleading at SES for four years. She and her husband, Terry, reside in the Crossville area with their children, daughter Emily, and son Ethan. With 12 returners from last year and 10 newcomers, including eight freshmen, the SMHS Cheer squad continues to grow.

The squad has spent the summer attending UCA Cheer Camp and preparing routines to cheer on the Panther football team under the Friday Night Lights. In addition, the squad is excited to see the fans get involved and show their SMHS spirit. Graham says, "I am so proud of how far these athletes have come since tryouts back in the spring. With only three seniors, we rely on our underclassmen to work hard and progress through skills at a faster than normal pace. I am excited to see them use those skills to get the crowd involved and make every SMHS football game one to remember!" The cheerleaders, along with 21 other squads from across Tennessee, packed a week full of fun, learning and team bonding at the UCA (Universal Cheerleading Association) Cheer Camp at Tennessee Tech University on July 14-17. Their hard work paid off on the final day, when they received numerous awards, including first place in the Cheer Division of the Game Day Competition.

The excitement began on Tuesday, July 14, when the SMHS Varsity squad performed a routine to the school’s fight song and a home pom dance. Both performances were incredible and the squad earned a gold superior ribbon for each. Throughout the week, the squad’s continued spirit and positive attitude was rewarded with spirit sticks and the “UCA Spirit Banana” on Thursday. The banana is awarded daily to the most spirited squad and is considered to be one of the most prestigious awards at camp. Also on Thursday, members of the SHMS Cheerleading squad competed against cheerleaders from across the state, and four were named to the UCA AllAmerican Squad. All-Americans are selected based on superior cheerleading, dancing and leadership skills at camps across the country. Only the top 12 percent of the more than 325,000 cheerleaders who attend summer camp sessions earn this honor. As members of the UCA All-Ameri-

can Squad, Avery Conley, Kristen South, CaraBeth Swafford and Emily Graham were invited to perform in the London New Year’s Day Parade in London, England. Jasmine Barnette was named Jump Off Queen of Camp for her elite jumping skills. UCA stands strong behind the philosophy that “America Needs Cheerleaders." In order to promote this tradition, campers take part in the Pin it Forward program at UCA cheer camps nation-wide. UCA staff members select cheerleaders who embody the positive attitude and encouraging spirit of a cheerleader and give them a pin card with two pins. Those cheerleaders must then look for other cheerleaders, who are not on their home squad, and “pin it forward." SMHS squad members Avery Conley and CaraBeth Swafford both received pins as part of this program. In addition to being selected as part of the Pin it Forward program, both Avery Conley and CaraBath Swafford were invited to try out for positions as a UCA

Staff members. This is a huge honor and reserved for a small number of elite senior cheerleaders. On the final day, squads perform the material that they have learned at camp as they compete in Xtreme Routine Division and Game Day Division competitions. The Panther cheerleaders earned first place in Varsity Cheer Division, runner-up in Game Day routine, runner-up in overall camp Champs Xtreme Routine, Superior and Excellent ribbons for evaluations throughout the week, Superior Home Pom Routine, and Superior Fight Song Performance. “I am incredibly proud of the hard work, determination and commitment of each and every member of the SMHS cheerleading squad. I look forward to the upcoming year as we work hard to cheer on our athletic teams and promote spirit school-wide. It is an honor to coach such a talented group of student athletes," says Coach Nicole Graham.

Aven Chadwell returns as SMHS dance coach Aven Chadwell begins her second year as dance coach at Stone Memorial High School. She graduated Magna Cum Laude from Belmont University in May 2013 with a B.A. in Art History and a minor in Dance. Aven has had extensive dance training for 19 years. Her early training was with Eldar Valiev, Lilia Valieva, Kiersten Mays and Jennifer Austin. While at Belmont, she also trained at the School of Nashville Ballet and Vanderbilt University's dance program. She was honored to be a member of the Belmont University Dance Company for four years and to perform with Epiphany, a professional modern dance company in Nashville. She attended the prestigious

American Dance Festival at Duke University in 2012. She has enriched her training with Master Classes with the Rockettes, Kyle Abraham, Keigwin and Company, and several instructors in New York. As a 2009 Stone Memorial High School graduate, Aven was on the very first dance team at SMHS. She was honored to be captain for three years. She was a Universal Dance Association All-Star and performed at the Music City Bowl in 2008 and 2009. In addition to teaching dance, Aven has completed her certifications in pilots, yoga and zumba. Aven teaches at Mountainview Studios, The Wreck Room and Arts in Motion in Kingston.

Heat index policy being employed The TSSAA Board of Control passed a proposal that requires a heat policy for all its member schools. The requirements of the policy include adjustments which must be made for activities depending on the heat index at the location where the activities take place. The TSSAA Heat policy is the minimum standard that member schools must follow. The TSSAA Heat policy will prohibit schools from practicing or competing when the heat index at the location of the activity is in excess of 104 degrees Fahrenheit. If the heat index is under 95 degrees, ample water must be provided. Water is always available and athletes have unrestricted access. Optional water breaks every 30 minutes for 10 minute time frames. was the all-time assist leader at Sequoyah. In 2007, she was the NJCAA Regional MVP for Hiwassee College and earned a degree in biology with a health science concentration from TTU. She resides in Cookeville her husband, Jesse, who has been TTU's athletic marketing coordinator since 2012. After a slow season last year in what has typically been a very outstanding program, this team has something to prove to pounce on opponents in 2015-'16. The Lady Panthers will be led by a trio of seniors, captain Emary Dumouchel, Ashley Herbert and fouryear starter Tierra Sargent. Junior Brittany Brun is anticipated to produce the highest number of kills and blocks on the team. "Brittany has had lots of experience controlling the middle and will be a force to be reckoned with this

year," noted the first-year coach. Many new players will see considerable playing time this year, including sophomore Abby Steele at weak side and Johnnie Stokes, who will control their back row defense. In an unprecedented move, last year's libero, Megan Diem, will be moving to outside hitter. "She is proving to have honed her skills and will be an excellent addition to this year's line up of big-time hitters. I am very impressed with her team's hardwork and effort that they have shown over the summer," said Bunch. Two sophomores in particular have shown excellent improvement this summer and will see some hard-earned playing time, Morgan Pelfrey and McKenna Day. Lastly, but certainly not least, Macy Shaver has really stepped up on the court and will share the

setting load with Herbert. "It's not often that you find two setters with such great hands and leadership capabilities, but this team has found them in Macy and Ashley," concluded Bunch This rounds out the Lady Panther's arsenal of players. They look forward to a fun and exciting season with their new coach. Others on the roster include Alexa Kelch, Robin Wetzlich, Callie Strong, Tierra Sargent, Haven Tollett, Lauren Morgan, Hannah Swenson and Peyton Hill. The Lady Panthers will again compete in District 6AAA with CCHS, White County, Cookeville and Warren County, with the post-season tournament scheduled for Rhea County. SMHS will be playing in two outside tournaments in Jackson County and Gatlinburg, besides hosting the Queen of the Mountain event.
