The District 6AAA coaches met with the media Aug. 11 in Cookeville to review the 2014 season, which could be the last for the current district, as the TSSAA voted to go to a different classification system for football for the 2015-'16 and 2016-'17 school years. With the votes tallied from two polls — the media and coaches — there is only one direction for CCHS and SMHS to go: but up. The media poll was Rhea County, Cookeville, White County, SMHS, Warren County and CCHS, while Rhea County and Cookeville tied for first, with White County third, SMHS and Warren County tied for fourth and CCHS sixth. Cookevi l le's Jimmy Maynord was the first to the podium. "We went to Fort Bluff Camp in Dayton to build something special. Our team adopted a motto, 'one team, one us, one posse,'
while at camp, and it is becoming contagious. “No need to talk about individuals as we are our motto! With us going into our second year schemewise on offense and defense, our kids love what we are doing. We shall let our play do our talking," he concluded. Of the 30 returning lettermen, there are only nine seniors — Matt Vaughn, Jordan Buckner, Kenny Brewer, James Vallecil-

SMHS Panthers are hungry for more in 2014 Coming off the first winning record and third playoff appearance in the last five years has the 2014 football SMHS Panthers hungry for more. “This year’s team is different than any team I’ve coached, we are not very senior heavy and most of the underclassmen are skill type kids, we have some kids that can run but are very young. We will be depending on a lot of sophomores and juniors but a lot of them got experience last year. “If we can stay away from taking two steps back everytime we take one forward we should be pretty competitive. We just have to hope that odd-shaped ball bounces our way most of the time. “Like I say every year, we have to win the turnover battle and not beat
ourselves. Usually the team that makes the fewest mistakes wins." "We have a very small senior class, but one that is a pleasure to coach," said Coach Mark Wattenbarger, who broke down his team by class. Seniors slated for action are Cole McDaniel, Chase Eichner, Dakota Karge, and Brandon Stetam. McDaniel, 5’10 250 offensive line/defensive end, is a three-year starter. “Cole is our emotional leader and a great team guy. His work ethic and love for the game is contagious among everyone and he’s the guy we want our young guys to learn from," said Wattenbarger. Eichner, a 6’1” 275, offensive lineman, "will be our bell cow up front. Great attitude and work ethic. Chase will be a two-
starter," said Wattenbarger. Karge, a 5’10” 230 offensive/defensive lineman, "has a great motor and an ability to find the football. He could be a real impact on both sides of the ball for us," Wattenbarger added. Stedam, 6’0 240 defensive end, is very explosive off the ball and runs really well for a defensive end. He has as the ability to create a lot of negative plays for opposing offenses, according to Wattenbarger. Juniors who could fill roles include Keith Sadula, Chandler VanNatter, Austin Helton, Carlos Barnette, Ben Kindred, Nathan Stine, Anthony Conley, Corey Johnson, Justin Johnson, Ben Tollett and Christian Staton. "Clarence has over 35 years of coaching experience at a very successful rockwood program. A definite asset to our staff and a great resource to use not just knowledge of the game but with handling of teenagers also, " said Wattenbarger. Matt Bates begins his fifth year with the Panthers and is offensive coordinator and offensive line coach. “Matt’s experience and
our continuity and how we do things is getting better and better each year. It’s definitely an asset when I can say one or two words and he knows what I’m gonna say. He’s at the point of seeing things before I do sometimes and getting more and more comfortable with my philosophy," added Wattenbarger. Ashby is entering his second year with year with the Panthers and is the defensive back coach. "Brandon’s understanding and passion for learning more about the game is really high. I couldn’t be happier with a young coach," said Wattenbarger. Farley is back with the Panthers. He has been a veteran of the sidelines
in Cumberland County in several capacities and has teamed up with Wattenbarger for some very successful seasons and numerous playoff seasons. "It’s great having someone who puts his ego aside for the good of the team and having a veteran helping with the development of our younger kids," added Wattenbarger. Farley was elected to the Cumberland County Commission from the seventh district during the Aug. 7 general election. This will be Duane Hazelton's third year with Stone. He is in charge of the varsity defensive line and the freshmen offensive line. "Duane is the type of
guy that will do anything asked of him. A hard working professional guy with a lot of experience and a definite asset to our staff," according to Wattenbarger. Trenton Stokes is entering his fourth year helping the Panther freshmen. "Trent’s willingness to absorb everything he can from every possible resource is unmatched. Trent’s growth as a football coach is a testament to his character, I couldn’t be happier with what Trent does for us," stated Wattenbarger. Mike Head is entering his first year with the Panthers. He will be responsible for the inside linebackers. "Mike comes to us with
several years experience including a couple years as a defensive coordinator. I was very pleased to get Mike late in the process.
I think he will be a huge asset for us now and down the road," concluded Wattenbarger.

Lady Jet volleyball team looks to improve from dismal in 2013
It is time for another season of Lady Jets volleyball. After a disappointing season that saw them go 8-16 during the regular season and bounced from the District 6AAA tournament in the first round, the team is looking to rebound. The team has worked very hard over the summer to improve skills and come together as a team. Head Coach Don Smith leads the coaching staff with assistants Roger Dixon, Kyle Armstrong and Tom Pritchard. “We have some very key contributors to our
team returning and several younger players ready to step up and fill some important roles,” said Smith. The Lady Jets return 12 lettermen this season, including three senior starters — Victoria Lee, Kayla Stamper and Sarah Shinn, according to Pritchard. Lee was voted All-District and team MVP last year and will play the middle, while Stamper returns as a setter. Shinn will be an outside hitter. A solid group of juniors — Cheyanne Frazee,
Emalee Breeding, Sadie Bowman, Shelby Kilby and Lindsey Sherrill — return. Frazee was Offensive Player of the Year in 2013 and will play an outside hitter position, while Breeding will be the libero. Bowman was the 2013 JV Defensive Player of the Year and will be a defensive specialist. Kilby and Sherrill will be playing the middle. Maddie Bernabei, Lily Barnes, Brianah Castleberry and Julia Hively are the sophomore members for CCHS.
Bernabei, returning JV MVP, will be playing right side hitter, while Barnes, JV Offensive Player of the Year, moves to a new position of setter. Castleberry, JV Most Improved Player, returns to her role as an up and coming middle player, while Hively will play in a new position as libero. A large and promising freshmen class — Destinie Davis, Alana Hicks, Amelia Hawkins, Brandi Sengpiel, Becca Jones, Jordan Dixon and Toni May — joined the See LADY, page 7C

CCHS golf teams opened the year in mid-July The Cumberland County High School golf teams opened the season July 21, which is earliest date fall sports can start according to the TSSAA, and will compete in District 6AAA again this season against Cookeville, White County, Warren County, Rhea County and Stone Memorial. The Jets teed it up this season in a very competitive district and will have to work very hard to be in the mix for a Region 3AAA berth come tournament time. Coach Randy Herring realizes the challenges ahead for the Jets and is stressing to the team the importance of work ethic, commitment and togetherness. "We are going to have to be prepared to play our best each match. Cookeville and Warren County are Ed Greif/Chronicle loaded with experience. The Jets will be led by senior D.J. Shelton and junior Jordan Graham. Herring knows both are solid players and outstanding young men. "Jordan and D.J. have the ability to go low at any time and both represent our team in a first-class manner. They have competed in big tournaments and understand what it takes to be competitive. I'm looking for both Jordan and D.J. to have their best season and take strong leadership roles on the team," the veteran coach Ed Greif/Chronicle

added. In 2013, Graham had a stroke average of 41 and earned All-District honors, while Shelton finished with a 42 average. Junior Andrew Brown is off to a good start and has shown great improvement. He has gained valuable experience playing on the TGA junior tour the last two summers. He will counted on this season, according to Herring. "We need Andrew, Jordan and D.J. to consistantly post quality scores this season," said Herring. Sophomore Chandler Shelton returns for his second season with the Jets. He played 26 rounds as a freshman and had a stroke average of 48. "Chandler is improving and is capable of posting a good score. He needs to gain more confidence in himself and continue to work on his game," said Herring. Freshmen Zach Young and Jordan Burgess fill out the Jets roster. Both have played on the elementary team and have played on the Golf Capital Junior Tour. "Zach has a chance to make a big impact on team this season. His swing is solid and he has a good short game. Learning how to deal with ups and downs of the game will be his biggest challenge. Jordan will play and will gain valuable experience this season," said Herring. Senior Burgess, junior Madison McLaughlin and freshman Gracey Whittenburg are members of the Lady Jet squad. See GOLF page 7C

PRIDE
• Continued from 9C “Homecoming 2014 Celebration." The squad participated in many activities to help them “Bring Home the Spirit” and led strongly in their school and community. The squad was excited to break out their homecoming spirit with crowns, sashes, spirit sticks and run through signs. Their outgoing school spirit was rewarded by receiving the famous "UCA Spirit Banana. "Hard work and dedication paid off as the CCHS squads brought home numerous awards and honors," said Coach Melissa Kerley. Four CCHS Cheerleaders were named to the All American UCA Cheer Squad — Haley Mitchell, Hannah Hitch, Jade Iles and Kierstin Haynes. These four young ladies have the opportunity to enjoy a week in London, England and participate in the London New Year’s Parade. The Jets took home first place in Game Day Cheer, second place Overall Game
TSSAA
• Continued from 3C they did in the old five-class system. The top four teams in each region (eight regions per class) will qualify for the playoffs. Richard McWhirter, executive director of the TSSAA, indicated recently, there are 305 football playing schools in Division I. After the 32 largest schools are removed, the 273 remaining schools will be divided into five classifications or 54-55 schools per class. There was speculation for CCHS, SMHS and White County as to where they would be in 2015-’16 and 2016-’17. Based on figures received two years ago, they would have been placed in Class 4A with schools in the Chattanooga area, while Cookeville and Warren County would have been in 6AAA. Bradley Central is the only team in the Chattanooga area who would qualify as a member of 6AAA based on those figures.

Day, second place Extreme Routine, Fight Song Superior, Home Pom Superior, Overall Superior Game Day Ready and Traditions Award, which they have won two years in a row. They earned the UCA Famous Spirit Banana during the second Day of camp and won Spirit Sticks nightly. UCA continued this
summer with their “Pin it Forward” program. UCA created this program to promote all of the values developed through cheerleading like leadership, spirit, commitment, kindness and motivation. As part of "Pin it Forward," each UCA instructor passed out a card with two pins to cheerleaders who they think possess these skills on day one. On
day two, those cheerleaders passed their extra pin onto another cheerleader from a different school possessing those traits. At the end of the camp, all of the cheerleaders who received a pin were recognized. From the CCHS squad, the following cheerleaders received pins — Taonna Miller, Kassie Looschen and Haley Plenert.
For the second year in a row, the Jets also took home the “Traditions” award, voted on by the entire UCA and Varsity Brands staff for the team showing outstanding leadership skills, school pride and spirit. “We are honored to be recognized for this. We take great pride in representing our school at camp and showing what it means to
be a Jet,” said Coach Melissa Kerley. Bekki Atkinson and Cheryl Threet are the sponsors. “We set high goals for this camp and achieved all of them. We are very proud of these kids,” Kerley said. "The Jets’ cheer team looks forward to a year of supporting their Jets and Lady Jets."
Potentially, CCHS and SMHS could play area schools like White County, Livingston, DeKalb County, etc., if their enrollments put them in the same classification. When the new classifications are created, this will also change the football schedules. Zero week games should become week one, with teams being allowed 11 weeks to play 10 games. Many schools are opting out of playing during their fall break. Going from the eastern time zone into the central time zone and visa versa should be considered. Central time zone teams lose an hour when playing teams from the eastern time zone. For example, you start a football game at 7 CDT at CCHS and SMHS, it is 8 p.m. for a team from the eastern time zone. This year’s fall break falls on week eight of the schedule, which allowed SMHS to play White County during week nine. White County had fall break the same week.
Other sports will remain in the current three configurations — Class AAA, Class AA and Class A. Basketball, softball, baseball, tennis, golf, cross country, wrestling and track and field will remain in their same classifications for school years 2015-’16 and 2016-’17. Those will be re-aligned by enrollments during the Fall of 2016. Some sports like soccer, cross country, wrestling, tennis and golf are divided into A/AA and AAA. School can request to move up or down for those two years, if their enrollment changes 20 percent when figures are released after the first 20 days of school.
I will keep you posted as things happen. ••• I would also like to thank all of the coaches for taking time to respond to the questionnaires. Also, thanks goes to Walt Riches for taking the SMHS photos and to Jessica Tomberlin and her SMHS annual staff for doing a good job running the July 28 picture day. Thanks to CCHS assistant principal/athletic director Pat Teeple, CCHS annual sponsor Art Sanderson and SMHS assistant principal/athletic director Lance Kennedy for their assistance in seeing the questionnaires were returned by the deadline. Kim Cram-Torres saw
that the Jr. Panther photos were received. The Jr. Jet photos will be published in an upcoming edition of the Chronicle, as soon as they are received. The complete elementa-
ry football schedule was not available for inclusion in the Fall Sports Preview. (Ed Greif is the Chronicle sports editor and his column appears regularly.)

Homestead to defend county football crown By Ed Greif
Chronicle sports editor
When the 2014 Cumberland County elementary football season opened Aug. 14, the Homestead Bulldogs were the defending champions, having defeated South Cumberland 20-14 in the 2013 title game at SMHS. Homestead is again coached by Brad and Brandon Sherrill who have 22 on their 2014 roster. The Brown Bears will be coached by Dwayne Davis and Kevin Lewis and have only 12 on the roster, which is the smallest of the eight county schools. There are three starters returning from last year's 2-5 team. "Coach Lewis and I are look-
ing forward to working with our players, teaching them fundamentals of football, as we instill in them the meaning of hard work, discipline and team work," said Davis. Crab Orchard will coached by Eddie Raper and Roger Wakefield and return nine lettermen, including six starters. "We have about 20 players on the team as this goes to press. We just have to continue to work to improve in order to be competitive against the larger schools. We need our returning eighth graders to provide leadership and set the example for our younger players. This group includes Izak Carter, Clint Kemmer,
Kyle Holding, and Derek Moore. Our seventy-grade group saw a lot ofaction last season and should be ready to step up this season," said Raper. South Cumberland is coached by Sam Pharris (34-12) and Jay Wood. The Rebels were 6-2 last season and return 11 lettermen, including eight starters. "This will the smallest team that we have had here at South in awhile. We lost a lot of size from last year so we will have to compensate for that this season," said Pharris. "Justin Reed will be leading the team at quarterback his season, throwing to receivers Mason Hall, Cameron Grant and Colton Konig. The offensive line will
be led by center Bailey Walker along with Gabe Whittenburg, Garet Holt and Brandon Day. Hunter Hutson and Josh Higdon will also be in the action on the offensive line. "Running backs will be led by Cameron Grant and Brandon Dalton. Mason Yates will be starting at end. Kicking duties will be handled by Mason Hall," concluded Pharris, who has players on the roster. North Cumberland (5-2) will be coached by Heather Neal, Rocky Gora and Harlan Walker, who return 10 lettermen, including six starters. "It's not how good you are. It's how bad you want it," said Neal. Martin (4-3) will be coached
by Dwayne McGhee and Matt Harris, who have three returning starters on the 19-player roster. "The Martin football team lost a lot of experience and leadership. We've had a great off-season and are excited to see which players step up to fill that leadership void," said McGhee. Pleasant Hill coached by Shawn Brown and Jay Wright have one of the largest rosters (28) and return five starters from last year's 2-5 team. Stone Elementary is coached by Bubba Barnes, Willie Patton and Jon Tollett and have 27 players on the roster, including seven returning starters.

The TSSAA Board of Control passed a proposal that requires a heat policy for all its member schools. The requirements of the policy include adjustments which must be made for activities depending on the heat index at the location where the activities take place. The TSSAA Heat policy is the minimum standard that member schools must follow. The TSSAA Heat policy will prohibit schools from practicing or competing when the heat index at the location of the activity is in excess of 104 degrees Fahrenheit. If the heat index is under 95 degrees, ample water must be provided. Water is always available and athletes have unrestricted access. Optional water breaks every 30 minutes for 10 minute time frames. Ice-down towels should be available. Athletes should be monitored carefully. Recheck heat index every 30 minutes. If the index is between 95-99 degrees, ample water must be provided. Water is always available and athletes have unrestricted access. Mandatory water breaks every 30 minute time frames. Ice-down towels are available. Reduce time outside or move indoors to air condition-
ing if possible. Postpone practice to later in the day if possible. Contact sports should remove helmet or extra equipment when in non-contact practice. Recheck heat index every 30 minutes. Provide ample water if the heat index is between 100-104 degrees. Water is always available and have athletes have unrestricted access. Mandatory water breaks every 30 minutes for 10 minute time frames. Icedown towels are available. Alter uniforms by removing items/layers if possible. Allow changes to dry shirts and shorts if possible. Reduce time outside or move indoors to air conditioning if possible. Postpone practice to late in the day if possible. Contact sports should remove helmets or extra equipment when in non-contact practice. Re-check heat index every 30 minutes. When the heat index is 105 degrees and above, stop all outside activity including practice or play. Stop all indoor activity if air conditioning is not available and the heat index inside is 105 degrees or greater. Recheck heat index every 30 minutes.
