Consider curb appeal

When choosing a new exterior color palette, consider how it will look next to neighboring homes, or blend with your homeowner’s association guidelines or other local requirements. If most homes in your neighborhood convey a monochromatic look, consider colors that complement it. Add a boldly painted front door or contrasting window or door trim to help your home stand out without sticking out.

Test color on small sample first

Sometimes testing the color on your home or its doors can help. If you are torn between options, test paint samples on a small area where colors will converge on your house. If you’re thinking about repainting, residing or remodeling your home, it’s also a good time to replace windows and doors. Once you’ve picked the base color for your home, add coordinating or contrasting window and door trim. For design inspiration, consider the latest exterior color trends: 1. Overall exterior colors, including creams, whites, shades of gray and neutral pastels like sky blue, provide a unique but simple style that is reflective of the homeowner’s individual tastes. 2. Stabilized cellulose, polyurethane foam offer high insulation R-value is the fire protection it gives with cellulose in the walls and attics,” Miller said. “If bedroom walls are insulated, it gives added fire protection plus sound proofing.” Made from a renewable natural resource which diverts waste from landfills, cellulose insulation not only limits greenhouse gas emissions during manufacturing but also prevents waste paper from releasing environmentally harmful gases as they decompose in landfills. Stabilized cellulose is sprayed into wall spaces between the studs in new construction and the same stabilized product is used in attics of new and existing buildings. Both of these applications are used in residential and commercial settings. The spray applications have become a standard feature in the better homes of Cumberland and surrounding counties. “We at Comfort Zone are so convinced of the benefits of cellulose that we do not offer fiberglass for walls or attics, but we find a way to apply cellulose. Due to the airtight properties of cellulose, it is a proven way to control heat loss in existing attics,” Miller said. “We constantly have positive reports on energy savings, with up to 35 percent lower heat bills.” Uninsulated attic stairs are a major source of heat loss. There are several different applications Comfort Zone can recommend to address this. “Our stabilized cellulose

has adhesive in it, which is moisture activated in both walls and attics. Therefore, in attics, our product stays in place over time with only minimal settling. This gives our customers a higher R-value for a longer period of time then the product which is purchased at the local box stores.” Comfort Zone offers an alternative that is even more energy efficient and can enhance the cellulose product. The sprayed polyurethane foam insulation allows for more extensive service to the needs that arise in construction. There are two procedures to use

this product — spray all foam in walls and attics or spray foam for total seal in exterior walls and fill the balance of the cavity with cellulose. “We find this is a very effective application and combines the best of both worlds,” Miller said. Miller has more than 40 years of experience in various aspects of the residential building industry and this experience plus customer service has a proven track record at Comfort Zone Insulation. Polyurethane is also sprayed on crawlspace walls and rimjoists in the crawlspace encapsulation proce-

dure. Using polyurethane in encapsulation makes a waterproof, airtight insulation which bonds permanently to the block, with a higher R-value, creating a superior complete house envelope as well as a complete moisture and mold resistant vapor barrier. The polyurethane is also sprayed under floors in crawlspaces. “This product is for people with an open mind and a ready pencil. It is not an expense, but an investment that pays dividends,” concluded Miller. Miller invites readers to come visit Comfort Zone at the home show for demonstration of heat-loss and the recycled product. For more information, call 277-3278 between 7 a.m. and 8 p.m.

Tackle the challenges Mother Nature throws at homeowners Innovative Restorations once again returns to this year’s Home Show with an interesting and life-like booth. As a 24/7 emergency response company, they are bringing to life the awareness of a common, yet dreadful, homeowner experience: water

Home Show 2014 damage. Typically water damage incidents come from faulty plumbing, malfunctioning appliances and unfortunate procrastination. Knowing a skilled company will prove to crucial role in easing the stress that accompanies property damage. Innovative Restorations is a local and family owned business, owned by Josiah and Larry Kessie, that specializes in the clean-up and restoration caused by interior flooding, fire and storm situations, that can affect homes and businesses. 2014 has already proven to be a record year, not only in extreme weather, but for business growth ,as well. Subzero temperatures in January triggered interior flooding all over the region. In some cases, furnaces that quit working caused interior temperatures to plummet low enough to allow the pipes to freeze. When water freezes, it expands and busted water supply lines is the result. When it thaws, water sprays at damaging forces, catching the property owner off guard. In the case of vacant properties, many realtors and time share

owners found multiple properties experiencing the same demise. Many property owners realized too late that their attics and walls were underinsulated when the waterlines installed froze. Not only homes were affected, but businesses ,too. Innovative Restorations responded to emergencies at four churches, a hotel, a few assisted living facilities and 60-plus other interior flooded structures during the harsh beginning of winter. Now that spring is returning, water damage concerns may not be over. Two important issues need to be on the minds of property owners: ice dams and hose bib breaks. Think back during all the snow and freezing temperatures. Was there somewhere on the roof edge or gutters an abundant accumulation of long

and heavy icicles? They are a sign of insufficient insulation, clogged gutters and roofing damage. The thawing ice turning into

water can then penetrate into both attic and interior walls. Left unattended, microbial growth and structural decay can only

get worse. A home owner can call to schedule a free estimate which can give him/her a piece of mind, accessing both the damage and repairs required. Another issue is caused by a busted hose bib. Did you disconnect the garden hose from the outdoor faucet before the first freeze? If your answer is See nature page 19

I had about 15 years of construction and residential maintenance experience, seven years of that being as a licensed builder/contractor in central Georgia, where building codes were in place and being enforced. I entered the home inspection industry full time in 1993 and became certified by ASHI (American Society of Home Inspectors) in 1995. Tennessee Named #1 Retirement State!

T

ennessee’s cost of living is responsible for its place at the top of the list. Tennessee has the second lowest cost of living in the country, behind Oklahoma, according to data collected by the Council for Community and Economic Research. Also, its local and state taxes are the third lowest in America, in the context of its income, sales and property tax levels, according to the Tax Foundation. Other outstanding criteria includes the state’s warmer than average climate and access to hospital beds. Middle & East Tennessee are among retirement destinations. There’s many reasons retirees love our area including our low cost of living, no state income tax, easy access along major interstates, and our four season climate. Tennessee is easy to get to with several major interstates running through our state making it within a day’s drive for over 50% of the United States. Through the years, our area has received recognition from numerous media outlets as one of top places to retire to. In 2001, Homes & Land Media introduced RetireToTennessee.com as

a way to showcase our great state to the baby boomer generation. Those planning their retirement will find a number of helpful resources online including information about Tennessee’s geography, climate, way of life, cost of living, and communities to retire to. Retirees can click on different parts of the state to learn more about each area and even find current homes for sale as well as local real estate agents. Baby boomers control over 80% of personal financial assets and more than 50% of discretionary spending power. They also own more real estate than any other generation. The real estate agents in Homes & Land report that many of these relocating baby boomers are the coveted cash buyers. Some of the most popular retirement areas include area lakes, golf courses, and retirement communities. Two of the groups of retirees coming to our area include snowbirds and half-backs. Snowbirds are people who have a second home in a warmer location and migrate south for the winters. Many of them use their vacation time to declare permanent residency in our state because of the lack of state income tax. Half-backs are those from the North and Mid-west who relocate to Florida or other areas further south and decide

it’s too far from home. They end up moving half-way back to our area to be closer to family and friends. See the pros on our pages for more information. “I already did!” That has been the comment echoing from the Smokies across East & Middle Tennessee to Crossville and the Upper Cumberland as people see the “RetireToTennessee.com” display booth at area home shows. “I’m from Wisconsin. We’re from Illinois. We’re from Michigan. I’m from Florida. I’m from Indiana.” Homes & Land targets more buyers… including retirees. Historically these are the Top Ten States where individuals reside that are requesting area magazines: California, Florida, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Ohio and Pennsylvania. RetireToTennessee.com has been targeting Baby Boomer/Retirees in every issue of Southern Living Magazine for over 10 years. Homes & Land reaches Millions of Visitors annually traveling area highways in the Smokies with our extremely visible delivery vans and billboards. Maintenance and repair

Carefully inspect outdoor structures for wear and tear. While Western Red Cedar contains natural preservatives that make the wood durable, all outdoor structures require annual care, including those made of pressure-treated lumber or composites. Check planks, beams and boards for cracking, warping or rough spots and repair accordingly. Replace damaged wood, and be sure to examine hardware to ensure it’s working properly and free of rust.

New projects

If you’ve always dreamed about lounging on a lovely deck on a summer afternoon, or savoring a spring morning beneath the shade of a decorative pergola, now’s the time to start planning the project. A great deck is the showpiece of an inspired backyard, and spring is a prime time to add one. To ensure

Inspect your outdoor structures for wear and tear each spring. your deck affords you the most value and enjoyment, consider using an online deck planner to help you envision your deck before you begin building. As gardening grows in popularity, you might consider adding raised planting beds to your landscaping. Raised beds not only make caring for and harvesting your garden easier - no bending required - they can also function as a decorative enhancement to your outdoor environment The material you choose will influence the longevity, beauty and enjoyment of your structure, so carefully consider your options before deciding. “Many homeowners choose Western Red Cedar

Plus, it’s a greener choice because it’s renewable and recyclable - unlike

composites - and doesn’t require chemical treatment as non-durable wood species do. It’s naturally rot and insect resistant, and you can stain it or leave it natural, depending on your preference.” The green qualities and durability of Western Red Cedar make it a great choice for virtually any outdoor structure - including those popular wooden playsets that begin appearing like wildflowers in backyards across the country every spring. Whatever project you’re dreaming of this spring from building a new deck, pergola, or planting beds to refurbishing an existing outdoor structure or palyset careful planning, cleaning, maintenance and the right materials can ensure your project adds value and beauty to your home environment.

Conserve resources with rainwater harvesting Rainwater collection is a way to conserve water that can be adopted by both private homeowners and businesses. Harvesting water during peak times of precipitation ensures water will be on hand during drought or when water restrictions are implemented. Making use of rainwater reduces reliance on underground wells or municipal water systems. Harvesting rainwater also can help prevent flooding and soil erosion. The average homeowner can collect thousands of gallons of rainwater each year. To learn just how much water can be harvested, as well as how many natural resources can be produced from that rain, visit www.savethe-rain.com, where men and women can calculate their rain collection potential by geographic location and average rainfall. Afterward, homeowners may be inclined to establish their own rainwater harvesting systems. Here is how to get started.

• Determine your roofing material. Potable water can be harvested from homes with sheet metal or slate roofing. Clay or adobe tiles also may be acceptable. Asphalt, wood shingles and tar roofs may leach toxic chemicals into the water, making it unsafe for drinking. This rainwater may only be collected to use for irrigation methods or washing cars and outdoor items. • Check gutter materials. Some gutters are made with lead soldering components. A commercial lead swab test can help you determine if there is lead present in your gutters. At a later time you can choose to replace the gutters if you desire a potable supply of water. • Invest in a collection tank or barrel. A number of manufacturers offer prefabricated rain collection systems complete with collection barrels. Otherwise, you can use your own barrel or tank to house the collected water. Ensure it is large enough

an overflow safeguard that will prevent the water from backing up through the system. It will divert the rainwater back out of the downspout when the barrel or tank is full. A rainwater collection system harnesses a natural source of water to be used for gardens and other out-

Rather than have rainwater flow out of downspouts to the ground, homeowners can collect that rainwater in barrels to use it as a sustainable source of water. to handle the volume of water collected. • Purchase and install leaf guards. If your home is surrounded by many trees, you probably accumulate leaf and tree debris in your home gutters and downspouts. Leaf guards will help keep the gutters clear and increase water flow through the water collection system. • Create a water collection area. A portion of the gutter system should be removed so that it connects to the collection bar-

rel or tank. As the rain falls, it will run down the roof and into the gutters before it streams into the downspouts. The downspout connected to the tank will deposit the water directly inside. Filters can be installed to help block the flow of debris. • Outfit the tank for overflow and water usage. A spigot and hose connection makes it easy to use the collected water for outdoor purposes. Many rainwater collection systems are designed with

door purposes. This water doesn’t contain chlorine or other additives, making it relatively clean and safe to use. Homeowners should check to see if a permit is necessary to install a rainwater collection system and then begin gathering water for various uses.

• Continued from 7 no, you may have a potential problem. The hose bib is a section of piping under the home within the crawlspace. Every exterior faucet outside is connected to a hose bib. Not disconnecting the garden hose prior to the first frost traps water in the hose bib pipe. Its inability to drain properly cracks the pipe. The first time you turn on the faucet to water the garden or wash the car this spring, you may have a broken pipe and a mess on your hands. “Signs of a problem would be if there’s water

leaking down the siding around the faucet, if you hear a rushing of water behind the exterior wall or notice a decreased pressure to the water flow,” Joe Stahl, a local plumber explained. “If any of those signs happen, turn off the faucet and check your crawl space for a water puddle. Call your plumber to replace the nose bib and then call Josiah to extract the water.” There are many preventive maintenance practices that can minimize property damage. new design, thereby saving the customer money,” Nichols said. At TNT Landscape Services, the motto states, “We personally treat your property as if it were our own.” Nichols said, “That isn’t just a motto — we stand behind it. If a customer is not satisfied with our work, we will make it right. Our customers rely on us for quality, inexpensive ideas and solutions for their landscaping needs. We offer the highest quality at the most affordable price.” The high-quality products that TNT Landscape Services offers require them to be factory trained. Extensive training for the concrete products TNT offers is completed by each crew member. The newest product offered by TNT Landscape Services is concrete surfacing. The product is a polymer-based concrete that can be used to surface virtually any concrete surface such as driveways, patios,

sidewalks, garages, pool decks, and even walls. The product can also be applied to existing counter tops, tile floors, and wood sub-floors. “In new construction, we can give our customers a totally custom look at the builder grade price,” Nichols said. “This product is stronger than your original concrete, easier to maintain, and is a lot nicer to look at with the optional patterns and stencils available.” Driveways, patios and sidewalks are such a large part of landscaping: Shouldn’t they look as presentable as the rest of your home? “I’ve seen a lot of driveways and sidewalks being replaced recently due to bad concrete. This is a real mess and the process is expensive, too. Tearing out the old concrete, along with a portion of your yard, reforming and pouring new concrete, is the old process. Not to men-

tion this process does not come with the guarantee that your new concrete will not fail again. I have seen concrete less than a year old have pits and cracks all through it. Concrete is concrete and it is going to crack. Our freeze and thaw cycle, moisture and poor workmanship are the primary reasons for concrete to fail,” Nichols said. Painting your concrete is not a solution to ugly concrete, either. Paint is a surface treatment and does not bond to the concrete. Therefore, it chips and peels almost as soon as it is put down. “Without the mess and the ability to minimize the effects of weather and workmanship to concrete, we can resurface the concrete so these cracks and pits and discolorations do not appear. Our process makes it virtually impervi-

ous to moisture, as well as making it a breeze to clean. All of this, and we can even guarantee it. No other concrete contractor can, or will, do this,” Nichols said. From designing and installing a complete landscaping package, installing a new lawn, building a walkway or retaining wall, installing landscape curbing, or resurfacing old, pitted, cracked ugly concrete, TNT Landscape Services is your local, affordable choice. Nichols said, “If you’re thinking about upgrading your landscaping, or if your concrete drive and sidewalks need repair, stop by our booth at the show and register for our gift certificate. It is worth $600 in savings. Then, call us and see why our customers say, ‘They took care of our property as if it were their own.’”

Need storage? Think beyond the shed When people think of outdoor storage, they generally envision garden sheds to house their lawn and garden equipment and tools. However, if space doesn’t allow for a large shed, there is no need to fret because there are other storage possibilities. Consider a garden ottoman or bench, for example. This structure can be built from wood and then painted or covered in padded fabric. Store small items inside the ottoman, which can also serve as a table or additional seating. In addition to an ottoman, a garden tool that can keep shovels and rakes organized. Homeowners with a deck can construct lidded deck boxes to store patio cushions or any other outdoor equipment. Utilizing the space under the deck is another idea. Cover the perimeter of the bottom of the deck with lattice and install one piece on a hinge to serve as a door. Store equipment underneath and out of sight. It also will be protected from the elements.

Two years ago he moved his operation to Crossville and couldn’t be happier. He works out of the workshop on his property, about 10 miles from of town on Lantana Rd. He builds custom furniture to suit any need and continues to offer res-

This furniture is made using the raw edges of the lumber with featured and unusual grain patterns, knots, bark and other natural “irregularities,” giving each piece a unique and natural look. “No two pieces are the same since each piece is adjusted to suit the natural features of the wood, so the design features the wood, not the other way around,” he said. In a storage war with your bathroom? Store smart with a compact vanity. Customizable components makes it easy to cut clutter. Above, a wall-mounted faucet frees counterspace, and a glass vessel brings an artistic element without taking up much “visual” space because of its elemental nature.

Give yourself more space (BPT) - Is your tiny bathroom cramping your functionality and style, leaving you longing for the enormous bathrooms gracing the pages of design magazines? Even if your bathroom is a fraction of the size, all it takes is some design savvy to make the most of the space you have. Consider these 10 smart tips that will help your bathroom look, feel and function like those larger contenders. 1. Get creative with corners Space is at a premium in small bathrooms, so it’s important to maximize every inch. Corners, for example, provide extra space for shelving, storage units and even hooks. Get creative and install unique design solutions that are not only functional, but also eye-catching. 2. Rethink your toilet Every bathroom needs a toilet, but is your current throne hogging space? A sleek, wall-mounted

model reclaims up to 12 precious inches of floor space. Concealed mounting hardware provides a seamless look that is comfortable and makes the toilet easy to clean. 3. Let solid colors shine Busy patterns have a shrinking effect and make small bathrooms seem even smaller. Conversely, light natural hues make a space feel more open. If you’re itching to get creative with design, experiment with textures but keep overpowering patterns to a minimum. 4. Maximize your bathtub A bathtub takes up a significant portion of the room, but modern, compact options with curved basins, can make the tub feel larger when in use, all while conserving space. 5. Select a smaller faucet A faucet is jewelry for the bathroom. And just as accessories can overpower an outfit, a big bulky faucet isn’t flattering in a

small bath. Single-handle designs conserve counter space, while a wall-mount installation frees it up all together and can create

quite the wow-factor, if the budget can accommodate the required changes to plumbing behind the See SPACE page 23

even small additions can make a big difference. 9. Use angles to your advantage Tile is a beautiful, durable addition to any bathroom. For dainty spaces, consider installing tile at a diagonal to accentuate the longest wall. 10. Choose the right lights Strategically install light to reflect and brighten a small bathroom to make it appear larger. Recessed lighting is an affordable solution for tiny rooms, offering ample light while taking up little space. Wall sconces alongside a mirror also reflect off the walls and make a room feel bright and airy.

Toiletries and personal supplies without a place to call home only add clutter and chaos. Store smart with a spacesaving vanity that comes equipped with drawer organizers and customizable components, such as in-drawer electric plugins. 7. Show off the shower Shower curtains may be pretty, but they interrupt the visual flow of a bathing space and make it feel significantly smaller.

In bathrooms with small footprints, opt for a clear glass sliding shower door that doesn’t require the clearance of one with a hinged design. If you’re embarking on a big remodel, create the illusion of more space by using same tile in the shower that’s used throughout; instead of seeing them as two separate zones, the eye will read them as one. 8. Discover the treasure of hidden storage Work with a contractor, and you just might find some serious storage potential hidden behind your walls. Whether it’s utilizing space between the studs for shallow shelving or a creating a small linen closet by annexing space from an adjacent room,

It draws hot air and moisture out of the attic to make the home more comfortable and more efficient. It is powered by a German made solar panel with a 25-year warranty. Miller also offers professional onsite consultation and pricing. According to a report by cool-companies.org, lighting consumes 40 percent of electricity in commercial buildings and is accountable for another 10 percent of the cost of cooling the heat it produces. By using daylight as a significant part of their lighting strategy, companies in a wide range of industries have greatly reduced their energy costs. Natural light is much less stressful on the eyes because it is full-spectrum

light, meaning it has all the colors of the rainbow in it. Extensive research indicates we need at least two hours of natural light exposure each day to function normally, according to healthy environments (www.indoorlight.com/natlight.html). “Studies have shown increased productivity and lower stress levels in the presence of natural skylighting. School grades go up in several studies done on schools retrofitted with skylights,” Miller said. “I enjoy being able to so positively affect the lives of many people.” Know anyone with leaking skylights? Miller also installs replacement skylights with a 20-year warranty. Another Velux prod-

Eliminate VOCs from your home remodel (BPT) - Remodeling a home’s decor leaves the space feeling fresh and new - something which all family members will enjoy for years to come. However, a home remodel can do more than just improve the looks of rooms in the house. It can also improve the indoor air quality an important factor especially during the winter months when homes are sealed up tight against the cold outdoor air. Carpeting, paint and even the materials used in your shower might contain harmful Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs). Studies have found the level of VOCs inside homes can be two to five times higher than the level outside, according to the Minnesota Department of Health. Some people may experience negative reactions to breathing in these compounds, depending on their health condition, as well as the levels and duration they’re exposed to the chemicals.

New technology has helped home improvement companies create products that don’t contain VOCs, so as you plan your remodeling project, be sure to look for these products to help keep the air in your home cleaner. • The walls - A fresh coat of paint is the first element when planning a room design. Choosing the perfect color and knowing if a primer coat is needed are just two decisions that need to be made when picking a brand. But also know that many paint companies are now producing VOC-free paints, which can help improve the air quality in the room. • The bathroom - Usually one of the smallest rooms in the home, it’s more important to make certain the airspace has good quality. • The kitchen - You may never have thought your kitchen cabinets have the potential to pollute the air inside your home. But if they are made from a

Hardwood trends a touch of the creative

(BPT) - The recovering U.S. housing market has led to increased demand for certain luxury items, including hardwood flooring. Exciting trends are influencing the marketplace and for today’s consumers, there are more hardwood flooring options than ever before. “Savvy consumers want variety and flexibility in their flooring choices,” said Linda Jovanovich of the American Hardwood Information Center. “With American hardwood species running the gamut of color and because hardwood is a product that can adapt to many different decorating styles and decors, hardwood provides a degree of diversity, as

well as long-term value, that cannot be matched by other flooring materials.” From the trend-watchers at independent market research firm, Market Insights Torcivia, and the National Wood Flooring Association, look at what’s trending now.

nesses and contractors for a variety of services.” McCoy has been in contracting since 1986 and is a professional building designer and past member of International Conference of Building Officials, licensed as an electrician, plumber, and residential and commercial builder. That experience means Housing Partners, Inc., can respond to a variety of needs, and 24-hour repair service is available, as well, following storms, break-ins or any disaster requiring immediate service. With the multiple specialities, McCoy said the business has the ability to do everything needed for a home, except install carpeting. He

noted the business works with highly-skilled carpenters and can provide referrals. Those capabilities combined with honesty and integrity have the business poised for great things, he said. “I believe that most customers like having a company that they can call for all types of needs in a remodel,” he said. “Having the same people involved for everything adds great security and limits the number of people coming in and out of your home.” Housing Partner, Inc. and Comfort Solutions, Inc. are at 44 Real McCoy Dr., and is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Call 788-1984 for more information.

Metal roofs are available in a wide variety of styles and colors to complement any style of architecture. There are profiles that mimic the look of clay tile, cedar shakes, slate, thatch or traditional shingles. While these metal roofs look like these traditional roofing products, they won’t crack, break down, burn, split or rot, and are much more impact resistant, lightweight and low maintenance, which does a long way with the durability and longevity of steel. Many of these products come with a 50-year warranty. Plateau Metal Sales has an in-house roll former to manufacture the traditional three-foot wide metal pan-

els, made with the latest in metal roofing technology. The perfect blend of high tensile steel in a high strength, attractive profile, it is also protected by the newest space-age coatings. This manufacturing process allows quick delivery of the product, taking only one to two days. Plateau Metal Sales manufactures the standing seam metal roof on the jobsite, which eliminates cost and damages caused by crating and shipping the finished panels. Standing seam metal is a heavier gauge metal and has a completely hidden fastening system for durability and longevity. Plateau Metal Sales has an in-house comput-

erized trim, which allows the business to manufacture custom trims, chimney caps and other specialty products to complete and make a new roof look better and be more wind resistant. Plateau Metal Sales also stocks insulation, sliding door hardware, gutter guards, ventilation products and lathing strips to complete a building project. In 2009, Plateau Metal Sales opened a sister store in Lenoir City, allowing the business to obtain and pass on to clients even greater savings through volume buying. The focus of Plateau Metal Sales has always been to give our custom-

ers the best possible product available at a fair price, in the fastest time possible. The Millers are excited about continuing to serve their customers by exceeding their expectations. Plateau Metal Sales hosts periodic free training days to help installers learn factory recommended techniques for installation. Plateau Metal Sales has an attractive 3,000-squarefoot showroom and they invite everyone to stop by and see what metal roofing has to offer. For more information, call 277-3586 Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 7 a.m. to noon.

(BPT) - For years Dwight Nadig and his wife suffered through the cold winters in their York, Pa., ranch-style home, originally built in 1979. “We have no access to natural gas in our neighborhood, so we had oil heat,” says Nadig. “The price of oil has gotten extremely high and we found ourselves keeping the thermostat fairly low.” Nadig started to investigate geothermal (or ground-source) heat pump systems to help them stay warm in the winter - without paying a lot of money on their oil bill. Quickly realizing the energy saving benefits, as well as the environmentally friendly aspects, he opted to install a system from ClimateMaster (www.climatemaster.com/residential). “The geothermal saves us money and we can keep the house at a nearly constant temperature,” says

temperatures just below the earth’s surface. While outside air temperatures may vary wildly depending on where you live, the ground temperature just a few feet down stays relatively stable. Geothermal heat pumps take advantage of this by moving heat through water in underground pipes to make it either warmer (in the winter) or cooler (in the summer) inside the home. The result is comfortable yearround indoor temperatures. Custom home builder Mike Gilles of Oklahoma City-based Savannah Builders believes that geothermal “just makes sense” when it comes to reducing energy bills. In fact, his company has incorporated geothermal in all of its home designs since 1993 - long before the green building movement or any tax incentives were in place.

“With our customers, dollar value ratio is definitely important,” says Gilles. “We find it’s easier to make a sell for the ‘low-hanging fruit’ when it comes to energy savings - good insulation, good windows and doors, and a quick-return renewable energy source like geothermal. Homeowners see their investment in an undoubtedly meaningful way when they realize how these elements translate to such low energy bills, right off the bat.” While it’s taken some time for homeowners to truly understand the benefits of geothermal heat pump systems, this is now changing very quickly with the rise in energy costs. “Upfront installation costs for geothermal systems can be more than those of traditional HVAC systems, but homeowners are realizing it’s just like

any other high-yield financial investment,” ClimateMaster’s Hiremath says. “Locking in your energy costs for life is an unbeatable deal, and that’s exactly what a geothermal system does.” The government is also working hard to advance energy independence and reduce the use of con-

ventional energy sources, which are in short supply and can tax and even harm already limited environmental resources. To support the adoption of more renewable energy alternatives like geothermal heat pump systems, the federal government has enact-

Geothermal systems provide independence for homeowners Nadig, whose system went live about a year ago. Nadig is just one of the many Americans who are replacing conventional oil, natural gas and electricitybased heating and cooling with geothermal heat pump systems, and the demand for these systems is only expected to grow, on a global scale, over the next decade. “There are more than 1 million of these units in U.S. homes today, which means an increasing number of homeowners are recognizing the benefits of this system in controlling their energy bills for life, and essentially declaring their energy independence,” says Raj Hiremath, marketing director at ClimateMaster. Geothermal, or “geoexchange,” systems work on the simple principle of regulating indoor heating or cooling by using the consistently moderate

• Continued from 25 rates hardwood with other flooring options like stone, tile, carpet or even metal. This approach often helps to define different seating or functional areas within a large, open space. • Installing wood floors, in a non-linear format, is increasingly popular as well. Custom parquet patterns can achieve this look but even traditional linear floors can accomplish the same goal by installing the linear pattern on a curve. • Consumer preferences are gravitating toward darker species, like walnut, over the more traditional, medium-colored white and red oak. In many cases, however, existing oak floors are being refinished and stained to achieve this look without replacing the floor. • Buyers are moving away from the traditional 2 1/4 inches strip floor to wider plank flooring, 3 inches and wider. Random

width planks are also popular. This creates a very casual look, while utilizing more of the raw materials during the manufacturing process. • Distressed flooring hand-scraping the boards will achieve an antiqued look while, at the same time, hiding small imperfections that can appear in flooring over time, like small scratches or dents. This distressed effect can also be achieved in the factory.

Stains and finishes

The National Wood Flooring Association also reports that flooring manufacturers are introducing new lines geared to satisfy the emerging trends toward gray stains and finishes - ranging from very subtle to very dark and metallic finishes. Metallic finishes incorporate softly shimmering metallic accents by embedding the metallic materials into the hardwood. The result is a pronounced grain that shim-
