VEGAS

STEAKHOUSE & LOUNGE

First, thank you, thank you, thank you, to all those who cast a vote for my name in the Crossville Chronicle’s 2014 Readers’ Choice Awards. I appreciate so very much the honor of being the 2014 Readers’ Choice newspaper columnist, as well as all those who comment on my work. This isn’t always the easiest job, and sometimes it can seem a bit thankless. Having someone comment that they even read something I wrote, whether they liked it or not, can often be re-affirming of my career choices. If I hear someone compliment my work, it’s an even better feeling. I didn’t aspire to be a newspaper gal from a young age. It hit me in high school and I pursued it through extracurricular activities until I made it to “the big time” and saw my first byline in print. I was hooked. Through it all, I have tried to live up to the values and ideals I was raised to respect — hard work, integrity, honesty. These are things my parents, my grandparents, my aunts, uncles, teachers and preachers taught me. Their lives were examples of hard work and perseverance and they taught me that I might not always try hard and succeed. In fact, from sports to school and beyond, many times I would try my hardest and still not quite make the cut. I found mentors along the way to encourage me and challenge me to grow. Yes, there have been some negative voices along the way, but the negative voices can help give you the will to stay in the fight, and so I am thankful for those I have encountered along the way. I’m much more thankful, however, for the mentors and the positive voices who have helped me these past 20 years. From Hix Stubblefield, who encouraged me to attend TTU and was my teacher, mentor and, I am thankful to say, friend and colleague after graduation, to Michael Moser, editor of the Crossville

Heather Mullinix

Tidbits Chronicle, who has encouraged me and challenged me to keep getting better at this craft, I say thank you. Thank you to Pauline Sherrer, who took a chance on a fresh-out-of-school graduate and gave me a workplace home that offered me room to grow and learn. Thank you to David Spates and Cheryl Duncan, former assistant editors of the Chronicle, Senior Staffwriter Gary Nelson, former copyeditor Laurie Robinson and Sports Editor Ed Greif for teaching me the ropes when I started working on West Ave. in 2000. What a fantastic team to start this journey with! I’m so thankful for the team that I work with today, Mr. Moser, Mr. Nelson and Mr. Greif, as well as Caro-

line Selby, who has relieved me of some of the design work so that I have the time to focus on reporting the news; Missy Wattenbarger, features editor, who does a fantastic job covering local events and activities, and keeps our news submissions organized; and Clinton Gill, editor of the Glade Sun, who is relatively new to journalism, but eager to learn and happy to lend a hand to his coworkers. From the advertising staff to the mail room staff and everyone in between, the Crossville Chronicle has become my homeaway-from-home and the people who work here my family. With them in my corner, I can do anything! • • • Heather Mullinix is assistant editor of the Crossville Chronicle. Her column regular column is published in the Tuesday edition of the Crossville Chronicle. She may be reached at hmullinix@ crossville-chronicle.com.
