AUDIENCE

A man living in a noisy city tries to be close to people but feels helplessly alone. He was always carried away by alcohol and neon lights. And walks alone in the streets drowned in loneliness and an unrestrained indulgence in yearning. These feelings of loneliness are divided into different chapters, making us realize that we all have the same experience.

Where …As I was walking down the street smoking and puffing away the bad feelings, I kicked an empty beer bottle that rolled to a phone I had thrown on the street. What …I picked up the phone, and there was this message. “We’re done,” said my girlfriend Jimmy. I started to wander like a lost soul: I checked the fish tank on the street; I passed by the grocery store and saw my lonely shadow in the window. And I suddenly realized that what kept me accompany were only the smoke rings under the neon lights. I’m all alone, all by myself.

DIRECTOR CONNECTION Eric Rohmer

The visual guide finds space for overlap in writer, art direction, musical video, and director. This has had a crucial impact on Wong Kar Wai, and mind mapping helps people understand it more intuitively.

Wong Kar Wai’s films clearly bear the imprint of the French New Wave of cinema, of which the great director Eric Rohmer is one of the flag bearers. Many of the dialogues in Wong Kar Wai’s films are inspired by Rohmer’s “The Four Seasons”.

Michelangelo Antonioni Antonioni is the European director who influenced Wong Kar-wai deeply. Wong Kar Wai said, “Antonioni is great. One thing I learned from him is that sometimes the real protagonist is not the actor, but the background.”

Alain Renais Alain Resnais is also one of the great directors of the French New Wave. He and Wong Kar Wai paid tribute to each other, as can be seen in his film Last Year at (in) Marienbad and in Wong Kar-wai’s Fallen Angels.

Kurosawa Akira Wong Kar Wai’s Ashes of Time script was inspired by the samurai films directed by Akira Kurosawa.

WRITERS

A pioneer of modern Chinese “urban literature” and a representative writer of the Hai school of literature

Dazai Osamu Japanese novels of the New Drama School and the New Sensation School

Juan Manuel Puig

Jean-Luc Godard French New Wave director JeanLuc Godard can be said to be the initiating teacher of Wong Kar Wai’s directing, and is his idol. Both of them focused on individual expression in their productions, without a fixed script, and relied on editing to update the plot. Many Western critics have compared Godard’s “Exhaustion” to the improvisational energy and handheld photography of “Chungking express”

ART DIRECTION& PREFERRED ACTORS

The famous Argentine post-modernist writer, Wong Kar Wai’s films favor a non-linear narrative style in both character relationships and plot development. Wang once said that such an approach was inspired by Argentine writer Manuel Puig’s work “The Buenos Aires Incident”.

Kawabata Yasunari The first Japanese writer to win the Nobel Prize for Literature.

Yokomitsu Riichi Jean-Luc Godard

Zhang Man Yu

Liang Chao Wei

Christopher Doyle, Hong KongAustralian cinematographer. Christopher Doyle is known as “Asia’s first cinematographer” and is one of the Golden Triangle of Hong Kong cinematographer Wong Kar Wai’s films. It is impossible for people to talk about Wong Kar Wai without talking about Christopher Doyle. He has been involved in almost all of Wong Karwai’s films and is an indispensable friend and inspiration.

PLOT GRAPHIC Considering that most of his films use dialogue, lighting, some abstract camera shifts, and concrete details to express a mood and emotion while using non-linear narrative techniques. So as a whole, there are many themes and emotions, making it almost impossible to define a sentiment from a single aspect. This master doodle visualizes the emotional ups and downs and loneliness that one feels when we are viewing it.

IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE Maggie Cheung and Tony Leung play the protagonists who move into an apartment building on the same day and discover that their spouses are cheating with them; they develop a strong attraction over the next four years. Wong Kar Wai uses a unique lens to show how this “strange relationship” is dreamily choreographed with “the elegance and rhythm of a waltz”.

FALLEN ANGELS FALLEN ANGLES can be described as an expanded conception of CHUNGKING EXPRESS. Of course, two stories overlap in one film, with Wong’s frenetic visuals dominating and incorporating a lot of fragmented, experimental style. Compared to the sweetness of CHUNGKING EXPRESS, FALLEN ANGLES is more like the other side of the coin.

CHUNGKING EXPRESS There are two intertwined stories in CHUNGKING EXPRESS, which Stephen Schneider included in his book 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die, and concludes, “ Whereas Wong Kar Wai’s other films may have more emotional resonance, CHUNKING EXPRESS, with its sheer naiveté, exuberance and cinematic freedom, is a stunning triumph of style over content.

Thank you to all those who helped me with the movie festival. This is the most interesting and complex project I have completed in my undergraduate years. I hope to have more breakthroughs in the coming stages. This project is a tribute to Wong Kar Wai, who is the greatest Chinese director in my mind.

Thanks for watching.
