like to think there is a little bit of a rockstar in each one of us. I mean who hasn’t danced their way out of a bad mood? Bad break up? Bad hair day? Music is the language we use when words are not enough. It has the power to motivate, inspire and move us. You’d be surprised how many of your favorite shoes were the result of a power ballad. And then, of course, there is the way in which they make us move. For us, here at Heaven Has Heels HQ, we posed the question: What comes first, the strut or the heels? Suffice to say, we couldn’t agree on an answer. What we could agree on, is it’s almost impossible to have one without the other.
In this issue, we explore the relationship between music and design; how one creative endeavor can greatly affect another. And how we, as lovers of fabulous accessories, have a lifetime of memories stored in those songs, those shoes, that bag. As you go about your week, take a little moment to reconnect with your favorite strut song. Or better yet, enlist your co-workers as DJs for an Ultimate Strut Playlist. There really is nothing like a spontaneous dance-off to brighten your day. We hope you enjoy reading this issue as much as we enjoyed creating it. Until next time, may your heels always be as high as your standards,

IN HER SHOES VENEXIANA’S ROCK’N’ROLL CHIC.
I
t’s 9pm as a battle-weary crowd enter the Pavillion at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week New York. For many journalists, this show marks the final in a twelve-hour daily grind of Spring/Summer collections. And yet, there is a palpable energy in the room because this is Venexiana. Each season, designer Katy Stern delivers a collection of over forty looks—almost double that of her fellow designers—on some of the industry’s most glamorous models. A professional architect, pianist and fashion designer, Stern is known for delivering occasion wear with a rock’n’roll edge. Born and educated in Europe, her signature aesthetic of exquisite fabrics and expert tailoring have drawn a global crowd that are in search of statement pieces destined for the well-to-do. Inside the fashion week venue, the catwalk has been configured so that everyone has a front row seat, to view designs top-to-toe— taking in the exquisite attention to detail and witty embellishments. On one side of me, an editor from
Vogue Thailand, the other, a stylist from Spain. Backstage, the veteran designer is cool, calm and collected as the models dress in their first looks. Immediately recognizable for her platinum bob and kohl-rimmed eyes, journalists wait in line to interview the designer in regards to the inspirations behind her latest collection. But it’s the legacy that interests me. Steadfastly sticking with evening and cocktail wear has been the key to her ongoing success. For Stern, it’s both a privilege and a joy. “My dresses are for those special occasions in life,” she explains, above the constant hum of show preparations. “It’s such a privileged to be able to provide an outfit that becomes a part of someone’s history.” From Russia to New York, Korea to Dubai, if it calls for glamor, you can bet a Venexiana design will be involved. These are more than simply sequins and satin; these pieces are destined to become a treasured part of someone’s past, present and future. VenexianaLtd.com — ANGELA GILLTRAP

GROUND CONTROL TO MAJOR TOM BLASTING OFF WITH YENA AHN’S SPACE-AGE CREATIONS.
A
love of design and innovation drew up-andcoming footwear designer Yena Ahn into the world of heavenly heels. Experimenting with contrasting materials, Ahn likes to push the boundaries of what’s expected while adhering to the challenging practicalities that come with creating a wearable piece of art. “I felt footwear allowed a versatile combination of materials to work with,” says Ahn. “I enjoyed the prospects that any material could potentially be used; shapes and silhouettes of today could be challenged with unusual but wearable mixtures of hard and soft elements.” Her footwear collection Visage of Space, is a perfect example of Ahn’s aesthetic. It draws inspiration from the depth, layers and patterns found in outer space; twirling, translucent nebulas in galaxies far, far away. It’s a topic she felt encapsulated her design philosophy for its association with exploration and investment in the future. For Ahn, it’s the future of fashion that she is passionate about utilizing 3D printing in many of her projects including this one. But like all good
adventurers (or space movies) explorations into the great unknown can be fraught with peril. “The perspex shell was the hardest challenge because it had to be hand molded and wearable,” says Ahn. “I experimented in vacuum forming it or making a mold however, none of them had worked to my vision. The 3D printed heel was also a challenge, since prototyping was difficult under budget; it had to be right in the first go. Inspired by the likes of Camilla Skovgaard and footwear brand Finsk, Ahn’s designs are statement shoes, a piece she feels should fatter and enhance the wearer so that they feel confident, graceful and elegant yet, strong and beautiful—much like Ahn’s mix of materials. “Shoes should empower women, regardless of how high they are,” says Ahn. “It’s all about how satisfied you are wearing them.” For lovers of space and heavenly heels, we look forward to the next installment of Yena Ahn’s creations. — JULIA STUART
WALKING ON SUNSHINE
ELENA GHISELLINI SATISFIES OUR LUXURY FETISH.
E
lena Ghisellini is a woman on the move. An illustrious career with some of the industry’s most notable names is the foundation for her eponymous line. From positions at Ferragamo and Trussardi to Givenchy and Emilio Pucci, Ghisellini is one of the accessory greats melding both form and function to create designs that delight. This season is no different. Entitled Walking on Sunshine, Elena Ghisellini’s Spring/ Summer 2015 collection is yet another example of how we are moved by music, it’s rhythms, nuance, and energy. For this Italian designer it’s an essential ingredient in her creative life. “I always listen to music from the moment I wake up,” says Ghisellini. “It gives me rhythm; it makes me dream which is important for my work, and it has to make people dream as well. In my studio music never lacks. It’s a source of inspiration, like nourishment or a living heart that beats full of life.” Conscious of contemporary trends, Ghisellini never shies away from making a statement when it comes to her designs. These are more than an accessory; a way to complete a look, they are, as Ghisellini describes them, “luxury fetishes.” And as such, each line, accent, and hue is created for maximum impact. Within the collection are everyday staples but it’s the explosion of color for which she is known.
“Color for me is a therapy, a way to thrill and gratify,” says Ghisellini. “Mixing colors is like composing music, different notes for different sensations. For example, the Rainbow motif was a huge success and the mix of colors will always be present in my collection though with different options.” Drawing inspiration from the animal world—particularly felines both big and small—Ghisellini sees accessories as a way to express an individual’s creativity. “The value they have acquired recently represents a great opportunity for the industry, an opportunity to create innovative yet elegant objects that really make a difference in our routine and characterize a person.” Handcrafted in Italy, it’s a mixture of quality, craftsmanship and design that are the cornerstone of the brand’s philosophy. Design a calling Ghisellini has had since she was little, creating her own fashion when the things she wanted alluded her. Today, you’ll find her overseeing her growing empire, juggling commitments and deadlines while the beat plays on. ElenaGhisellini. com — ANGELA GILLTRAP

battle the process and margins to try and create the most luxury product possible, without compromise.
In 2010, Alex Davis created Cobra Society and for that, we owe her our undying gratitude. What began as a line of handmade, luxury boots expanded into loafers, handbags, small leather goods and home accents all with Davis’ dedication to quality, craftsmanship, and traditional manufacturing. What characteristics do you think you need to be a great footwear designer? I wish I were just the footwear designer. I’m also the president of the company. What really hinges upon being a great designer is the ability to be agile: I have to jump back and forth between subjects, projects and time zones efficiently and effectively. Of course, it’s crucial to have the creativity and vision to design a product that people will love and want to wear. But of equal importance is having the patience and dedication to develop the exact designs and find the perfect materials to create a product that is beautiful as it is wearable. Furthermore, I may make my life more difficult as a footwear designer as I am constantly
Sourcing great manufacturers is a huge part of launching a new footwear line, how was your experience? When I was conceptualizing Cobra Society, I knew I wanted to marry the intricate and stunning rugs of Morocco with the highest quality, most comfortable boots (I still wear boots about 360 days a year). I studied in Morocco for several months while in college, which is when I began searching for the types of textiles I wanted. It actually took me around two years to discover the right artisans and rug type, but I eventually chose a weave from the middle Atlas Mountains, which were thick enough to impart the structural, architectural feel I envisioned for the line. I now employ a village of women to weave the rugs for Cobra Society, which are then cut and spliced as fabric in our boots. In regards to my factories, I wanted to go to the zenith of quality shoe construction, which for me was the traditional Goodyear welted production method in Spain. I went there without a single connection, but found one magical human named Javier who decided to take a chance on me…The rest is a happy history! What drew you to Spanish manufacturing? Spain is the pinnacle when it comes to the highest quality boot and shoe construction, and only a very limited about of factories in the world (mainly located in Spain) can do a true Goodyear welt, which is the ageold, rarely used construction method I use for my boots. One of the reasons I love Goodyear welted construction is because it was actually developed from an orthopedic way to make British
men’s dress shoes. There’s a layer of cork between the leather upper and leather sole that molds to your foot as your walk that essentially makes each pair custom to your foot. When it comes to style and comfort, can the two co-exist in luxury footwear? I strongly believe that true luxury is the confluence of style, great materials, and comfort –if you are only achieving one or two of those, you’ll never make your customer truly happy. I strive to not only create beautiful pieces, but a forever wearable and timeless product. It can’t just be stylish; it has to be comfortable and versatile, too! What’s the thing that most surprised you when it comes to footwear design and manufacturing? I was so surprised by the amount of time it takes someone to make a boot in my production line. There are over 200 machines and 400 hands making every single Cobra Society boot in Spain alone. Around one thousand hands will touch my product and materials before its global journey concludes with the customer. How do you want a woman to feel in your designs? I want women to feel like she can accomplish anything in my shoes! They provide the extra energy in your day to get through it. They make you want to dress from the feet up in the morning not from the top down. I want Cobra Society to give women around the world a luxury product that they feel good about wearing and that they wear to make them feel good. My goal is always to make a woman feel confident, powerful and 100% comfortable with themselves. These boots are so special in part because of the women who hand weave every textile, and my customers should feel very proud supporting them.
KNOCK ON WOOD
A LITTLE ZEN GOES A LONG WAY IN TODAY’S HECTIC WORLD.
M
inimal. Bold. Innovative. Tiffany C. Ng’s Zentech collection is about all attaining balance. “In this modern era, advanced technology has blurred the boundary between [our] work life and private life. Finding that balance is increasingly important,” says Ng. “This project explores how this balance can be achieved through Zen.” This is the transformers of jewelry as Ng creates mix and match pieces that can be broken down and reassembled to show the different states of balance in their lives. It’s an outward expression of an inward battle. Something we can all relate to. Made of wood, metal and resin, jesmonite and optic fibres are added alongside metal and rubber for a textural, multi-faceted design. Not the easiest choice of materials to work with but for Ng, it’s all about finding new and innovative techniques to bring her concepts to life.
“I think every designer needs to experiment in order to develop better techniques,” says Ng. “For me, I explored more than twenty ways of creating the jewelry before finding the best technique—even though I still think it’s not perfect.” Originally from Hong Kong, Ng melds her heritage with the inspiration of her London surroundings to create pieces she hopes will remain favorites for years to come. “I want people to get excited every time they wear my designs,” says Ng. “My main aim is that they will never get bored with my collection. They can mix and match my jewelry pieces and personalize them.” A design intent on creating timeless pieces that help us express our trials and tribulations is something we can all aspire to, even if our work/life balance may need a little work. — ANASTASIA RUBIN

innovation WELCOME TO THE FUTURE OF FASHION. Innovative knitwear techniques pave the way for up-cycled materials at New York City based accessory brand, Verloop. As the push to end “fast fashion” continues, we talk innovation with its founder, Ella Lim. What inspired your innovative Spring/Summer 2015 collection? Verloop’s Spring/Summer 2015 design development coincided with our studio moving to a new location. As we organized and cleaned up our old space, we found different materials and accessories—many of them one-off remnants—that we had sourced for previous collections. We spent the rest of the development cycle challenging ourselves to create products that repurposed these “findings” into memorable pieces for spring. Among the materials we found—and that were incorporated into this collection—were nylon paracords, climbing carabiners, and vinyl, plastic and cotton fabric remnants. The mishmash of different colors and unexpected materials is something really exciting to me as a designer. Our spring collection reminds me of the aesthetic and design spirit that’s found in the Favelas of Brazil where re-purposing and reusing whatever is available is a way of life. Was there much time spent in development?
The current season took longer to develop, as it was our first time working with artisans on handmade pieces using materials that are not typically used for bags. Our “Favela” and “Cintra” bags are hand-crocheted from a special kind of plastic that’s widely used in the seaweed farming industry to bind and identify seaweed harvests underwater. The plastic we use is thicker and has a silky consistency that can be quite challenging to work with. It was a challenge to achieve consistency in our prototypes as each bag is made by a single artisan from scratch. Our development timelines were further stretched by the fact that it can take up to two days to hand crochet a single bag from this material. Product and process design had to be adjusted several times to finally create a unique and well-priced product while paying our artisans competitive, fairtrade wages with the means to work at home. We also keep updated on the latest technical advances in textiles as a starting point when developing for our main fall/winter collection. For example, the fingertips of our best-selling touchscreen gloves are knitted with yarn that’s made with a thin layer of conductive coating that allows you to text without taking off your gloves. We utilize these advances each season to make sure that the
collections are cutting edge, both in terms of style and technique. What is your background? I was born and raised in the Philippines before moving to the U.S. for university and graduate school. I spent several years working in advertising and the industrial design industry where I worked to commercialize design objects and furniture made with innovative materials and production techniques. That experience inspired me to launch Verloop in 2011 as an extension of my family’s knitwear manufacturing business in New York. My vision was to create a unique line of accessories that infuse traditional knits with a contemporary aesthetic and functionality. We also try to employ unexpected materials, details, and industrial techniques to the collection. All Verloop products are made in our third generation, family-owned production facility in the Philippines. The fact that we own our own factory allows us to easily invest in research and development, to experiment freely with materials and to take design risks without the pressure of meeting high minimums. What’s been your biggest coup to date in terms of innovative techniques/ offerings? There have been two. One, is developing a
special knit technique to create gloves with thick knit fabric while providing a “4-way” stretch. This helps provide a snug fit that makes our glove more comfortable to wear without sacrificing warmth. This special feature can be found in our color block touchscreen gloves. The other is the re-purposed plastic that’s the same plastic used to harvest seaweed in the Philippines. Durable, water resistant and getting a second life—all qualities that would make our crochet bags functional and meaningful. But, Verloop is a young company, so there are discoveries to be made each season, and the sense of discovery is what keeps me so energized about the entire process. What exciting developments do you have planned for 2015? I’m excited about working on more design projects that employ recycled and repurposed materials. We have been looking into different waste generated by the fashion industry to see what can be potentially recycled, or up-cycled into great products. Also perhaps a move into home accessories? I’m currently working on a concept for knitted storage—might take a few more seasons before it finally makes its debut but only if it ever makes it out of the concept stage! VerloopKnits. com

WALK THIS WAY
THE KEY TO FABULOUS FEET COURTESY OF PODIATRIST SUZANNE LEVINE.
Your arms and legs certainly pull their weight, but only your feet do so literally. Plus, with the changing seasons, we’re set for a wave of new, head-to-toe fashion trends. What many don’t realize is that drastically changing your footwear from boots, to sneakers, to sandals can potentially wreak havoc on your feet. Men are especially likely to ignore their feet—believing that foot care is an issue more suited to women. But even the slightest change in support can compromise your body’s foundation. These exercises will not only reduce the signs of aging on your feet, they’ll redistribute your weight more evenly and help with issues like back pain and poor posture. There are over 100 muscles and tendons that control this oft-overlooked extremity. The following exercises come recommended from celebrated New York podiatrist Suzanne Levine. They can all be done at home or work—provided you have your own office or a very easy-going cubicle mate.

Toe Stretch: Bend at the waist and lace the fingers of your right hand through your right foot’s toes, then do the same with your left hand and foot. Bend your knees if necessary. Pull up slightly and hold for five beats. Repeat four times.
Flex & Point: Sitting on the floor, flex your toes towards yourself until you feel the stretch in your calves. Hold for ten beats. Follow by pointing the toes away from yourself until you feel the stretch in your instep (the top part of your foot between your toes and ankle). Step & Stretch: Place your toes on an elevated step with the heel hanging of the edge. Slowly lower your heel for ten seconds. Rest and repeat five times per foot. This is very effective for heel pain. Hold onto the wall, and do both feet at once, for a more intense stretch. Towel: Sit on the floor with your legs in front of you. Place the length of a towel or fabric around your toes. Pull towards you and hold for twenty seconds, then release. Do three sets.
Tennis Ball/Marbles: While sitting in a chair, roll a tennis ball, or several marbles, under the ball of your feet for a little DIY reflexology.

THE RISE OF TINA ALDATZ’ FOOTWEAR EMPIRE, ONE COMFORTABLE STEP AT A TIME. Tina Aldatz has been helping woman avoid shoeicide since first launching the original designer shoe cushion, Foot Petals in 2001. Now fashion lovers and aspiring entrepreneurs can follow her journey in her new book, From Stilettos to the Stock Exchange (Apparel Industry Publishing). How did you get involved with the footwear industry? I first got involved in the footwear industry when I created Foot Petals, a custom line of designer cushioned insoles for women’s high heels, and we launched our product in 2001. What do you love about it? I never really felt like part of a community until I was embraced with open arms by the footwear community. Their support, and the support of organizations like the The Two Ten Foundation, have really changed my life for the better. I also love all the shoes, shoes and more shoes! What have been some of the challenges? All the shoes! No really, one of the challenges I experienced throughout my career in
the footwear industry is that it is primarily run by men, but I see that changing. What advice would you give someone wanting to break into the footwear industry? Create relationships and don’t burn bridges! The footwear industry is a very tight knit community. What’s one thing you know now that you wish you had known when you started out? Think like a retailer and begin the process with the end in mind. For example, find the right market for your product that makes sense for retailers. It is crucial and not as easy as I thought it would be. When I first started Foot Petals, some people saw it as a beauty product while the more successful buyers saw it in the shoe department. n Lisbon’s trendy Chiado district, Mini Bar is immediately recognizable. The latest offering from renowned chef José Avillez, it’s housed within the Teatro São Luiz structure—a theater built in 1894 and renovated in 1928. It exudes the charm and understated glamor of an afterhours speakeasy with a menu that is literally, “Epic.” The “mini” in Mini Bar refers to the food rather than the layout. Split into two sections, the front room plays host to a vast array of tempting cocktails. To the back, frosted glass dividers, wood paneling and art deco light fixtures set the scene for a memorable dining experience. While the menu could be described as tapas-style, these dishes are quite unlike any you have tasted. Here, it’s best to expect the unexpected as Avillez and his team add an innovative twist to some of your
favorite dishes served in “Acts”—as an homage to their theatrical home. Like to kick things off with a drink? Why not try a chewable Caipirinha or perhaps a bite-sized Margarita is more your style? As for food, I recommend the Epic tasting menu which features over six courses chosen by the chef. It delivers a tantalizing selection of Mini Bar favorites from the incredible Foie gras Ferror Rocher bonbon to the moreish Algarve prawn ceviche served on a lime slice. Each dish is served on its own, specially designed plateware, and perfectly proportioned to add an explosion of flavor in one bite. Finish off with the memorable Lemon-Lime Globe then dance off the calories from 11pm as the DJ takes over. This is experiential dining at its best.— Mini Bar Teatro São Luiz Rua António Maria Cardoso, nº58 Chiado Lisbon, MiniBar.pt ANGELA GILLTRAP

sex tape: the scent BOHEMIAN SOCIETY’S SCENT-SATIONAL ADDTION. Bohemian Society has been outfitting the hip and the fabulous in their signature rock-chic ready-to-wear since launching in 2003. Based in downtown L.A., Victor Wilde— Founder/President and Chief Designer—has never been one to shy away from bad influences. In their latest offering, Bohemian Society has paired up with The Institute for Art and Olfaction to create Sex Tape, a signature scent that will “haunt you forever.” We caught up with Wilde to talk sensory overload and the allure of the forbidden. Describe the Sex Tape scent in three words? Gets you laid. What inspired you to add a fragrance to the Bohemian Society brand? I have always been the person who gets a headache as soon as I walk into the perfume section of a department store. I wanted to create something better, something that not only my customers would love, but I would love as well. Bohemian Society is a lifestyle brand. Sex Tape fits right in with that lifestyle. It is my job to empower people and make them look great. Now I can make them smell great too. How did the concept of Sex Tape come about? I had a notebook of concepts and ideas. Saskia Wilson-Brown (from the Institute for Art and Olfaction), Shana Nys Dambrot (who is Bohemian Society’s story director) and I, were already
toying around in the lab with scents, and I would bounce concepts off of them. The name Sex Tape immediately stood out and stuck. Tracie May-Wagner joined the team and a year later, we all made a Sex Tape together. What was the most unexpected thing you learned about the fragrance industry while creating your own? I knew absolutely nothing about the industry when I first started the year-long process of developing Sex Tape. It was a very cool experience to see that, like other industries, fragrance has a great indie pulse behind it such as The Institute for Art and Olfaction. That and the fact that there are so many voracious collectors and fanatics out there that are crazy about scents. How did you become involved with the Institute for Art and Olfaction? While working on a project with Shana Nys Dambrot and photographer Austin Young, I discovered Austin had worked with the Institute for Art and Olfaction and I expressed my desire to develop a fragrance for Bohemian Society. Shana made the introduction to Saskia and the party started from there. Will perfume now be a mainstay in Bohemian Society’s repertoire? Yes. Yes, it definitely will. Much like Sex Tape’s tag line, “It will haunt you forever...” TheBohemianSociety.com

inspa-rational THE ROYAL TREATMENT IS ONLY A STEP AWAY THANKS TO THE FOUR SEASONS HOTEL RITZ LISBON. Hotel spas are the things dreams are made of—particularly when it comes to The Four Seasons Hotel Ritz Lisbon. Touted as one of the best spas in the country— by both tourists and locals alike—a treatment here quickly transports you to an indulgent world where deadlines cease to exist, and to-do lists vanish. On my recent trip, I opted for the spa’s signature treatment, The Portuguese Retreat—a truly indulgent 2.5 hour treatment inspired by the tale of the Almond Trees in Blossom. A well-known love story from the time of the Moors, the King Ibn Almudium and his wife, the daughter of a great lord from the North, Gilda were very much in love and yet, the princess grew sadder each day. Wise men and magicians from all over the world were consulted, but none could find a cure for her sadness, until one day, an old Nordic man told the king that Gilda was longing for the white snow-covered fields of her homeland. Immediately, the king had thousands of almond trees planted in the gardens of their palace in Silves so that, when they were in blossom, the land would be covered in white petals, bringing joy to the princess. And this is why, since that long-gone spring, the Algarve comes alive with the beauty of thousands of almond blossoms each year. So how is this transformed into a spa treatment? It all starts with a trip through the decadent
pool area of the hotel into the vast and tranquil resting area complete with sauna, spa and locker room. From there, your therapist takes you into a peaceful, treatment room for a foot massage then onto a full-body exfoliation using a mixture of grained almonds and Portuguese honey. This is followed by a massage with the inebriating aroma of roses, which acts as an antioxidant to nourish and relax. The idea of using roses came from yet another Portuguese legend, that of the Miracle of Roses. The protagonist is Elizabeth of Portugal, married to King Denis of Portugal in 1282. It is said that she would leave the palace disguised to take food to the poor, and one day transformed bread into roses. The result of The Portuguese Retreat is skin that is luminescent, hydrated and full of life; a psyche that feels prepared to once again take on the many pressures of modern day life. Admittedly, these historic tales can be lost as you succumb to the overwhelming urge to relax, however, when others ask how you spent your morning, at least you’ll be able to tell them you were learning about the culture.
