EDITOR’S LETTER

W

e’ve dubbed this our “Love” Issue. Not simply because February marks the celebrated (and often dreaded) Valentine’s Day, but because the word itself opens up a world of possibilities. From living a life you love, to falling for items that exude beauty and craftsmanship, love is the guiding force behind many of the things we do in life. Celebrating passion, commitment and the need to share moments, memories and milestones is one of the guiding philosophies behind this magazine. Ask any woman if they can recall the first pair of high heels they fell in love with and you’ll see their eyes light up as they tell you in detail the exact time, place and design of those shoes; an inanimate object that brings so much joy simply by recollection. For many women, high heels are a right of passage and yes, like other items in our lives, they may seem a superfluous, often indulgent purchase, but a pair of high heels can come to symbolize precious moments and memories in a woman’s life. And then or course, there are the jewels... For centuries, wars have been fought; lives lost in the pursuit of all that shimmers and shines. Billions of dollars are spent each year on rocks that are mined around the world, our obsession seeming to transcend cultures and geographical boundaries. The diamond remains one of the most sought after jewels on the market today. It became a

symbol of everlasting love due to its strength, beauty and association with royalty and celebrities alike. In 1477, Archduke Maximillian of Austria commissioned the very first diamond engagement ring on record for his betrothed, Mary of Burgundy. This sparked a trend for diamond rings among European aristocracy and nobility. Today, the sheer variety of diamonds—from cuts to color—have seen this time honored gem keep its place among the jewelry elite. And yet, as you’ll see in this issue we are inundated with choice when it comes to meaningful jewels that have come to symbolize a token of affection. For me, the word love means respect, awe, and gratefulness—to have come into contact with someone or something that moves and inspires. In my line of work, I am fortunate to meet hundreds of editors, designers, and advocates of the design world internationally. Each one has such burning passion and commitment to what they do. This is not a nineto-five crowd, this is a community of people who are always thinking, planning, challenging themselves to turn the ordinary into the extraordinary. It’s a calling. One I believe deserves to be celebrated. So whether you have a romantic evening planned this month or choose to spend a quite evening in retrospection, know that love is all around if only you take the time to look. INTHE ILLUMINATING HERDESIGNSSHOES OF OLGA NORONHA.

O

ne of the success stories of ModaLisboa’s young designer program, Olga Noronha has been a crowd favorite since hitting the runway of Portugal’s premier fashion event in 2013. It was her collaborations with street wear label Say My Name, which originally caught the attention of the recruiting panel. Today, the London-based accessory designer has well and truly come into her own, commanding attention on the runway—and beyond—with her unique brand of wearable art. For Noronha, jewelry is more than an adornment; it’s an opportunity to showcase less common areas or extensions of the body—regardless of the jewelry’s size or price point. “When I think of jewelry,” says Noronha. “I think of a piece that can be worn, since that always was the main aim of what we call “jewelry.” However, the term “wearable” is each day more ambiguous.” The young designer lit up the catwalk with her Spring/Summer 2015 collection, inspired by Norway’s iconic Northern Lights. “When I knew I was off to present another collection at ModaLisboa, I felt like, more than ever, moving out of my comfort zone and exploring new materials

and color palettes,” explains Noronha. “I knew I had to somehow incorporate the element of surprise and performance and, the best way of doing it would be to explore light/darkness.” Once set on the concept, Noronha had to ensure her creative vision was viable, enlisting the talents of electric engineer Jose Miguel Barbosa who assisted in the construction of custom light circuits located inside the exoskeletons of the pieces. With a “fair amount of patience,” a ritual was set for charging batteries, checking voltages, connecting controllers and making sure the remotes were working properly. Thankfully, her vision was executed without a hitch, first wowing with her intricate architectural pieces in all-white, then illuminating the runway as each piece transformed. For the Portuguese-born designer, the aim of her work is to elicit a reaction, good or bad; to continue to push the envelope of accessory design. Based in London, she draws from her European background and British base to carve out her niche among fashion’s rising stars illuminating the design world with her creations. hey say that behind every great man is a great woman and when it comes to Jane Gershon Weitzman they would be correct. Wife of luxury shoe designer Stuart Weitzman, Jane was Executive Vice President of the Stuart Weitzman brand and its first Vice President of Retail. The former Atlanta native helped pave the way for one of the footwear industry’s most successful footwear and accessory brands. When Stuart Weitzman opened its first boutique on Madison Avenue in New York City, it was Jane who was enlisted with the task of making the store a destination; a beacon for lovers of design and footwear. It was during the mid 1980s, as she was traipsing through various art studios to create a new advertising campaign, that the idea to create a mini-

gallery of shoe art first began to take shape. Over the next decade and beyond, Jane commissioned more than 1,000 art shoes that graced the windows of Weitzman’s stores—becoming a traveling exhibition that was displayed in stores around the world. Each, drawing crowds amazed by their creativity and craftsmanship. For the first time, a curated selection of more than 150 fantasy art shoes from the Stuart Weitzman Collection is compiled in Art & Sole (Harper Design). BEYOND JOY PARISIAN BRAND, ABIGAIL, IS ALL SMILES.

I

t’s described as an “anticrisis” brand. The name itself meaning—Beyond Joy. And indeed for lovers of heavenly heels, Parisian brand Abigail, is attracting a loyal audience due to its eye-catching designs inspired by pop art and the creator’s European and Latin backgrounds. While we may marvel at the finished product, for business partners Tamy Potasz and Pierre-Emmanuel Rouzineau, Abigail is the culmination of many years hard work; sourcing manufacturers, developing contacts and solidifying the brand’s identity. Launched in Paris in 2011, it is one of many independent footwear brands harnessing the manufacturing power of Brazil maintaining a code of ethics in regards to the brands carbon and social footprint. Here, you’ll find quality construction and design that creates an “off beat preppy look” for those who refuse to settle for uninspired heels. Whilst at Sole Commerce in Midtown Manhattan designer Tamy Potasz talked us through some of the strong points of the brands—interrupted several times by retailers keen to learn more. “Abigail shoes are handmade in collaboration with professional craftsmen who present exceptional skills that set them apart from the industrialized world,” explains

Potasz. “It took us some time to find the great collaborations we have today, but it remains one of our strongest selling points.” A former architect, Tamy Potasz recognized the need for colorful, practical fashion footwear that was Ecoconscious and ethically made. Teaming up with business partner Rouzineau, the pair immediately found success with buyers (and consumers) due to the brands distinct look and comfortable construction. They harnessed the best of their French and Brazilian origins to create a strong brand identity from the outset immediately targeting international markets traveling around the world to various trade shows to spread the joy. Learning and shaping Abigail’s international offerings along the way. “Each country gravitates to different things,” says Potazs. “For us, it is very interesting to observe these differences and great to see that by Abigail can fit different people with a variety of tastes and references.” Far from an overnight success, expect to see Abigail in stores in the U.S. very soon. “The success for us, is the result of a lot of work, of great collaborations and all the joy we feel by Abigail.” This is one brand who is destined to deliver joy one sole at a time. FORBIDDEN FRUIT THE ONGOING RISE OF GUAVA FOOTWEAR.

U

nique, exotic and full of flavor... That’s the way CEO and Creative Director Ines Caleiro describes her favorite fruit, Guava— which also happens to be the inspiration for her striking line of fashion footwear. With a truly international mindset, Guava is a Portuguese footwear line based in Oslo, Norway. Caleiro, a long time shoe lover, completed her postgraduated studies in London going on to work in the U.S. Her background in graphic design, as well as fashion and product design, all culminated in the launch of her own brand, Guava, in 2010. “When I was working in the U.S., my adorable boss encouraged me to start a brand,” says Caleiro. “I was drawing shoes everywhere I was going, every time I had a piece of paper in front of me.” This obsession manifested itself into

the brand we see today, one that prides itself on utilizing modern technologies while maintaining an artisan feel. “Being a Portuguese brand is becoming very positive in the market,” says Calerio. “The Portuguese industry is well known and we have high-quality producers that attract markets such as U.S.A. and Asia.” Known for its geometric details and vibrant colors, Guava continues to produce cohesive collections that are on trend yet stand apart from its larger competitors. TAKE FLIGHT THE TIMELESS STYLE OF CRISTINA ORTIZ.

T

here’s no denying that jewelry is an emotive purchase. For designer, Cristina Ortiz it’s her life’s calling. “Jewelry is emotional,” says the Milanbased fine jewelry designer. “We connect to it on a personal level and it’s a connection that lasts throughout time.” Growing up in the Canary Islands, Ortiz’ designs are inspired by the scenic surroundings of her childhood—the sun, sea and volcanic terrain— but it’s her family that remains her greatest inspiration. “We are very close,” says Ortiz. “They have always supported my dreams. My mother gave me the artistic sense of clean design and proportions, and my dad, the determination to follow my dreams. ” Graduating from the esteemed Ecole de la Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne in Paris, Ortiz worked for some of the world’s most notable luxury brands before launching her eponymous line of fine jewelry. “Working with prestigious fashion houses is a complex process,” says Ortiz. “You have to use your own creativity and perception

to interpret the essence of each brand and their customers. The designer brings out the intrinsic DNA of the brand and develops it into a coherent image under their expression. For the first time, creating my own line allowed me to express my personal DNA,” delivering one of her greatest rewards as a designer: Freedom of expression. Treading the fine line between whimsy and glamor, Ortiz’ coveted pieces are all handmade by Italian artisans; the designs, both delicate and sculptural. The collection is truly unique with an aesthetic and craftsmanship of its own. For Spring/Summer 2015 strong motifs and graceful silhouettes abound—these pieces are show stoppers. The most iconic piece; the angel ring in black rhodium plated white gold and black diamonds, destined to be a favorite for years to come. “The concept behind the collection is that jewelry is an extension of our essence, rather than an accessory,” says Ortiz. “I believe the essence of an individual is a multi-faceted balance between light enchantment and dark mystery.” Timeless treasures for the emotive lover of exquisite design. I wouldn’t miss any of the things we owned, but I was certainly glad I had my pictures and jewelry. That was when I realized, how much emotional energy I had already invested into the pieces—memories of when they were given, where they were worn and when I would pass them down to my daughter. Dedicated to promoting established and emerging independent jewelry designers, HatchJewelry.com provides an alternative to today’s fast fashion. It’s a digital marketplace where each item has a story, a purpose, and a place in our wardrobes (and our hearts). In this month’s Online Confessions, we catch up with cofounder Linnea Olson-Schwartz to find out what it’s like to be a part of one of our favorite Online jewelry retailers. What inspired you to create HatchJewelry.com? Hurricane Irene. At the time, I lived four houses up from the flood zone in Brooklyn. When news of the hurricane came, we were told to evacuate. The idea of sludge entering my space was enough for us to mobilize. There was not a lot of time to get it together so I took what mattered most. My family (obviously!) and cat, all my photo albums, a few Chloe handbags and Louboutin shoes that I had gotten when I was an editor, and all of my jewelry. We threw it in the car and drove to my husband’s parents house. On the way, it occurred to me that this would be an incredible time to leave behind everything else we owned and start over (alas, that

I was a fashion and accessories editor for sixteen years and loved to discover new designers. I had always wanted to find a way to bring smaller, independent or hard-to-find international jewelry designers to a larger audience. I was introduced to Matthew, my cofounder, through my former editor at Surface magazine and his vision for both Hatch Jewelry and Hatch Hub resonated with what I was hoping to bring to the marketplace. What’s the best thing about running an Online boutique? I love the immediacy of Online retailing. You can have conversations with customers from across the country and discover what they like and would like to see in the future. Is there ever a time when you want to steal all the items for yourself? Yes. Always. There isn’t a piece I buy for the site that I wouldn’t wear myself, so that essentially means I want everything. What does an average day look like at HatchJewelry.com? I have two young daughters that I take care of in addition to working at Hatch. The mornings after I drop them off

at school I work from home, either in Brooklyn or out of our office in the city. Sometimes I do designer appointments to see the jewelry in person. I would really prefer to see and try things on to make a clear decision if possible, but, of course, many of our designers are from out of the NY area. That is when I try to draw on my experience from being an editor and try to make a selection from a lookbook or images. Matthew is full time at Hatch. His day is much more complicated. He handles pretty much everything from the marketing and branding to the Ambassador Boxes and website development. There would not be a Hatch Jewelry without him. What’s the most fun part of your job? Discovering new and interesting lines and learning more about the designers’ process is something I really value and hope our customer does too. Who are some of your favorite designers at the moment? We just brought on two new lines this December. Both came from friends who saw someone wearing the jewelry and fell in love with the line and introduced it to me. That’s what I love about jewelry. People feel very passionate about it. Any exciting developments planned for 2015? Our Ambassador Box has been growing well, and we look to continue building on that. ove is all around according to Jason Setiawan and Paola Valesquez, founders of the Share More Love project. The fashion industry veterans launched the photo project in 2013 with the aim of adding a positive message and sense of community to the world, one image at a time. “Love is the most important thing in our everyday life,” says Setiawan. “Without love there is no life.” Utilizing his skills as a prominent fashion and beauty photographer, Setiawan and his partner, fashion PR, Valesquez recruited friends and family to take up the cause. “We choose to create this awareness by asking people for their quote of what they believe love is; followed by portrait sessions with Jason,” says Valesquez. “We hope that by doing this, each and every one of us, will remember what love means to us and become more aware of the love we already have within.”

THE DO’S AND DON’TS OF BUYING MEN’S FOOTWEAR

Do look at the shoes he wears most. Is there a particular style of shoe that could do with an upgrade? A particular brand he loves? Buying something in the style (and fit) which your man already wears, is the key to gifting success. Often simply doing the shopping for your man is gift enough. Don’t shop for yourself. We’ve all been there. One for him, two for me... If you’re prone to distraction, write yourself a list of qualities you’re looking for—price point, color, style— and stick to the plan.

Do add a little color. To make your purchase more “special,” choose a style with a different color or pattern than what your man is used to. A little color goes a long way. Don’t try and change him. You were attracted to him for a reason. Sure, offer suggests, but in the end let him be his own person. ‘Gift card’ is not a dirty word.

Know thy man. Listen. It’s the key to gifting success. Think back, has he mentioned how much he hates/loves a particular pair of shoes? Stopped momentarily in front of a store window? The clues are there. It’s a matter of picking up on them.

Don’t be upset if he never wears them. You win some, you loose some. In the end, it’s the thought that counts.

RIDING THE CARAVAN OF STYLE WITH CLAUDINE DESOLA. Known for their stylish events and support of up-and-coming designers, Caravan Stylist Studio is a hot spot in midtown Manhattan. We caught up with founder and creator, Claudine Desola to talk shop. What is Caravan Stylist Studio? Caravan Stylist Studio is a full-service beauty and fashion studio in NYC for bloggers, editors and talent. We offer complimentary glam services utilizing products from our sponsors Sexy Hair, Simple Skincare, Kryolan Professional Makeup, Zoya Nail polish, Fake Bake, LaMarca Prosecco, Tic Tacs, Ziploop, Belvoi, Volvic and more. Our goal is to be a place of discovery for our guests, so they are always discovering fun new products and great designers. We work with over 150 designers with our talent each year to get them ready for red carpet events, TV appearances and more. We also handle spec photo shoots for a lot of talent when they start on their new TV shows. We recently were able to work with cast members of Orange is the New Black, The Looking, Jane the Virgin, The Leftovers, GOTHAM, EMPIRE, SUITS, Girlfriends

Guide to Divorce and more. What inspired you to create Caravan Stylist Studio? I come from a PR background and love the world of public relations but I didn’t want to work in just fashion and beauty so I took my PR skills and mixed it with my retail experience—Caravan originally started as the first ever consistent store in an RV that would drive around NYC and I also had a store on Great Jones street and one on the Upper East Side. At Caravan the store, I sold some of the newest labels from around the globe like Stretsis, IRO, Moods of Norway—brands you hear so much about now but we were one of the first to carry them back in 2006. I loved meeting all the amazing actresses and musicians that came into the store to find some great items from the designers— some of my favorites came to visit from Selena Gomez, Miley Cyrus, Olivia Wilde, Kristen Bell, Krysten Ritter, Sophia Bush, Eva Mendes, Vanessa Hudgens and even great male actors like Josh Hutcherson. So many talented and fun people came through the Caravan doors that I wanted to figure out a way


to continue that energy. I came up with Caravan Stylist Studio where we get to work with talent such as bloggers, actors and actresses, learn about their projects and work with them on different events they have coming up. I love hearing about the hottest new shows before others do and supporting these talents on so many interesting events they have. We organize several events a year on top of all the daily appointments during fashion week, Tribeca Film Festival and more. What is your fashion background? I studied fashion merchandising and public relations at Marist College and then took a bunch of internships at fashion companies. My first job was at YEOHLEE where I got to meet some of the most amazing people in the fashion business from Fern Mallis and Annie Leibovitz to Gloria Baume and Gina Kelly. I worked on several seasons of fashion shows at Bryant Park and even one in the subway underground that we worked on with the MTA and had some amazing people in that show including Farah Fawcett. I met some of the top models during my time at YEOHLEE including James King, Alek Wek and so many more. YEOHLEE discovered some new models along the way as well; it was my mentor and is a constant inspiration. I then worked on all the public relations for Anthropologie where I met Glen Senk who is one of my heroes and Wendy who handled all the fashion buying. I dream of still working at Anthropologie, it was amazing going to their corporate offices and seeing the upcoming collections and seeing all the beautiful furniture. I wish I could live in an Anthropologie store. Then I started my own PR company and in 2005, I started Caravan and in 2011, I started my newest venture, Caravan Stylist Studio. Today, I run Caravan Stylist Studio, handle a bunch of consulting and ideation for companies as well as run production for several STYLE 360 shows a year. This past September I had the honor of working with Serena Williams on her first ever fashion show for HSN. She was amazing to work with and I loved

the collection and had a great time What characteristics do you think make for a successful career in fashion? The fashion world is definitely one that isn’t as glamorous as it looks. You need to roll up your sleeves and a lot of times walk around the city with tons of garment bags. There is a lot of mundane work involved in order to keep everything organized. Photo shoots, styling for red carpet events and TV shows is a process, so we always have to call in a ton of options and then find that one or a couple of pieces that work out of the bunch. There is a lot of work leading up to that. I always say to my interns and my employees, there is a lot of fun stuff we get to do and then there is a lot of mundane stuff we have to do but it is all part of the process. Beyond that, every day is new day, filled with discoveries— new talent, new designers, new ideas. It is one of the most exciting industries because it is so visual! What inspires you? I am inspired by all the amazing talent we get to work with—the girls from Orange is the New Black that we get to work with are incredible they sing, they act, they are involved in charity organizations they are all so special and that is inspiring. Netflix inspires me. They are putting out some amazing content and getting to work with some of the talent involved in those shows for their personal events and photos shoots are awesome. What’s in store for 2015? In 2015, we hope to be put on the map with our Caravan Stylist Studio. We hope to produce a ton more content with photo shoots, videos and programming like the Fashion District Project. We have been blessed to organize some cool events we hope to create even bigger ones and meet even more talent— actresses, designers, and bloggers—and continue to be inspired every day. For now, my fabulous heels are purely for decoration! Sequins or Satin? Sequins. There is something mesmerizing about sequins, the way the light reflects off each one. I love how their application can be used in an artform, from vibrant & fun to elegant. Everyone needs at least one fabulous sequined garment! Tiny Tote or Enormous Bag? Definitely a tiny tote or vintage clutch. I tend to be minimalistic and only carry what I need (lip gloss, eye liner, sunscreen, mobile phone, pen, coin purse). When I carry a large bag my

day becomes chaos, I can never find a thing! I always admire large bags but have found my collection to be filled with smaller classic styles. Overdressed or Underdressed? Under-dressed with a statement piece. I wear simple yet classic pieces, and tend to go for quality over quantity. I’m an accessories addict and love to add pieces of vintage to complete my look. Wardrobe staples can be transformed over and over with a fabulous accessory. What’s your fashion mantra to the masses? My mantra: Define your style with a signature look. My signature is vintage & estate brooches, each beautiful piece tells a story and helps define my individual style—I wear one on every jacket. If you could be one shoe what would you be? I would be a sport’s shoe, designed with a purpose; to make a change to one’s lifestyle. YTH: Is it possible to shrink your pores? This is a huge beauty myth! Once you hit puberty, you officially have your adult size pores. Nitika Chopra, host of Naturally Beautiful on Z Living TV network has broken down the basics to keep your skin baby-soft and your hair moisturized all winter long using simple, natural ingredients. COCONUT OIL: During the winter months, treat your hair to a coconut oil hair mask once a week. Before bed, apply organic coconut oil to your scalp and the ends of your hair with a cotton ball. Wrap your head in a towel, cover with a shower cap, and leave it in overnight. This keeps your hair super healthy and makes it soft and shiny. The next morning, rinse it out with just a little bit of shampoo (no conditioner necessary!). Use less coconut oil for thinner hair. ROSE WATER: Your beauty routine should be a sensory experience. I live in New York City, so I love to feel peaceful, relaxed and calm. One of my favorite ingredients is all-natural rose water. You can use it as a toner just after cleansing. Lavender is soothing, while peppermint is more energizing. Pick the one that fits your mood! DIY SPA TIPS: Remember to test a small amount of any DIY spa recipe on the inside of your wrist before you use it on your face or body.
