EDITOR’S note Each one of us plays our part in creating something extraordinary. Whether you were the inspiration, the audience, the client or the clientele; whether you broke someone’s heart or filled it with joy; listened to another’s dreams or had the courage to pursue your own, one person can be the face of a concept but it takes a village to create a thing of beauty. In the world of fashion, there are thousands of unsung heros—from concept to creation. Then there are those who support them. In this, our debut issue of Heaven Has Heels we celebrate creativity in all its forms and encourage you to look behind the design—through the windows of your favorite store, in the pages of your best-loved magazine and on the streets of the city in which you live. Behind every design, big or small, are years of hard work, blood, sweat and tears. Never underestimate your role in the process. Creativity is contagious.

FIRST IN LINE Dawid Tomaszewski is a fashion innovator. His, is the runway show that silences the crowd. That transports the audience. That pushes the boundaries of beauty and design. And now the talented designer has added accessories to the mix and we couldn’t be happier. Originally from Poland, Tomaszewski has been wowing the fashion crowd since coming onto the scene in 2009. The award-winning designer began at the London College of Fashion and Akademie der Künste Berlin under Vivienne Westwood. Wanting to broaden his field of vision, he continued with studies in History of Art at Academy of Fine Art in Poznan. “I always had a vision of how a woman should be dressed,” says Tomaszewski. And that vision is “Timeless Elegance.” We couldn’t agree more and can’t wait to dress top-to-toe in Dawid Tomaszewski.

The Marvelous World of

Marlous de Roode

In the marvelous world of Marlous de Roode, poetry and function go together hand in hand. The young Dutch designer is known for her eclectic, playful designs which unfold their full potential and expressiveness when interacting with the wearer. From the Vive l’Achat (hat purse) to her line of origami inspired accessories, Marlous de Roode’s eye for detail and quality craftsmanship, make this avant-garde designer one to watch. What inspires you most about accessories? I believe accessories allow you to express yourself exactly the way you are. They are the little products with an abudance of details. When it comes to the design process, for me, I’m most inspired by the body—the shapes, movement and the ways in which you can drape materials over and around it.

too much to take these ideas to the extreme but in accessories I can go crazy.

You have such a unique and inspiring view on design do you ever run out of inspiration? For me bags and accessories are a world were I can let my imagination run wild. I don’t think I will ever run out of ideas, there’s too many in the world that I have yet to explore. In clothes it can be

We are so in love with your Vive l’Achat creation, what inspired you to create it? Thank you so much. This collection was created to celebrate shopping. These little shopping bags are a joy to wear and to remind people of the fun you have when you shop.

What materials do you love to work with? I love to work with leather. It’s a material that allows you to create beautiful things. The texture is between cream and clay yet leather is strong and pliable; a pure product from nature.

When it comes to letting go, is consignment the new therapy? It’s the affliction effecting women around the world. It can consume one’s life, destroy relationships, relegate you to years of therapy...it’s called clutter. Most of us have been affected by it at some point in our lives. Whether we care to admit it or not, our possessions have a way of holding us hostage. In ancient Egypt, Pharaohs were buried with their most treasured items. Today, we seem to hoard our possessions due to their sentimental value. Ask a shoe addict about their first pair of designer shoes and watch their eyes light up. Question a diehard handbag hoarder about the day they took possession of their first designer clutch and notice their eyes glaze over dreamily. We all have clutter. The only question is: when it comes to clearing out the old to make way for the new, what

do you do when that clutter is couture? Welcome the luxury consignment specialists, TheRealReal.com—one of the fastest growing, online luxury sales sites. “All sorts of people use TheRealReal. com,” says Jessica Abraham, Manhattanbased Merchandise Manager for TheRealReal.com. “From celebrities to fashion lovers. For some, it’s a way to relinquish the past, for others it’s a great way to make room (and finance) the new. Whatever the reason, I think letting go can be very therapeutic,” says Abraham. A former buyer, stylist and fashion industry expert, Abraham is able to bring her many skills to the table when it comes to deciding which items will make the cut for TheRealReal.com. Only near perfect, authenticated items—from designers she knows TheRealReal.com shoppers will love—are considered. It’s Abraham’s job to then source, collect and curate those items, often directly from a client’s house. That’s where we met, en-route to the Hamptons where Abraham was on her way to bag a Birkin. “People become very attached to their items,” she explains. “It’s only natural as they often symbolize a moment— maybe it was a great night out or a past relationship” she says. “But many people want to give, they want lighten their load, de-clutter and make room for new things.” Then there are those waiting on the other end, eager to buy Abraham’s finds and create memories of their own. Whether it’s a Louboutin or a Birkin, clearing out the old to usher in the new, has never been this much fun. “There’s no question, I love my job.” TheRealReal.com — ANGELA GILLTRAP
