According to the Lantern.com Gender Stress Index, women will be 11% more stressed than men this holiday season—but still happier. It’s a statistic I can believe. As much as we love the festive season, it can be a stressful and emotional time. Reflecting on the events of the past year and making plans for the future can seem daunting and yet, there is something beautiful about having the opportunity to start fresh with the onset of a new year. In this, our last issue of 2014, we ask some of our favorite fashion people to reflect upon

the trials and tribulations of 2014 and share with us what they are most looking forward to in 2015. LAUREL DEWITT DELIVERS URBAN ARMOR FOR THE GLAMORATI.

F

rom Milla Jovovich to Nicki Minaj, the stars are lining up for a Laurel DeWitt custom creation. “Celebrities have so many options. It’s truly an honor when they opt to wear one of my designs,” says the Brooklyn-based designer. Vanessa Hudgens, Khloe Kardashian, Cyndi Lauper, Lady Gaga, Kelly Rowland, Lil Kim, Brandy, Will.i.am and Eve have all rocked her designs and from one look at the collection, we know why. Specializing in metal apparel and jewelry design, DeWitt has had a somewhat meteoric rise since launching her jewelry label LaureLuxe in 2010. The demand for her eclectic style of urban armory led to the evolution of an all-encompassing line, under her own name, which now includes everything from red carpet gowns to men’s suspenders. DeWitts distinctive aesthetic is born of a combination of draped metal chain, leaflets, plated armor, chain fringe and tassel, all expertly fashioned with jaw-dropping results. “If I could, I would make everything as a complicated structured costume and play in a fantasy editorial-driven land,” says DeWitt. “But, I’m also contemplating making more wearable metal “fabric” type pieces, which will

reduce the weight of the garments. I wouldn’t say it’s a compromise, as much as an evolution, necessary to contemplate as my company grows and our consumer base expands.” Having to forge her own way, DeWitt studied fashion design at the Pratt Institute choosing to use metal as her creative medium, a decision that brings its own challenges. “I definitely learn something new with every piece. There are no textbooks on “metal apparel,” says DeWitt. “I try to constantly evolve despite the swollen hands, bruises, blood and even a trip to the ER, when I was working on a custom project for Will.i.am.” Suffering for her art, DeWitt’s commitment to inspired design means 2015 is set to be an even bigger year with a focus on branding, business and expansion. “I’m always striving for deeper collections with offerings for everyone,” says DeWitt. “I try my hardest to create unique, one-of-a-kind pieces. MOVE ME DEAR FRANCES DELIVERS.

D

ear Frances is the go-to footwear brand for the urban romantic. Launched by London-based designer Jane Frances, it’s simple yet elegant silhouettes, use of quality leathers and exquisite craftsmanship sets its apart from its competitors. Still in its infancy as a global brand, Dear Frances’ Autumn/ Winter collection exudes understated elegance and timeless style. Aptly named, Move Me, the collection explores Frances’ relationship between artisanal tradition and designer street wear. “I’ve always had an affinity with architecture and furniture design, and this certainly translates through my collections,” says Frances. “In a sense, shoe design is much like architecture for the foot; it has to be structured and involves engineering specific gradients, sole supports and so on. When I first began my studies in shoe design, I found myself taking countless photos of urban architecture, geometric shadows and almost anything with straight lines. I’m fascinated by symmetry being thrown slightly off kilter. To me, there’s something raw and romantic about that.”

factory in Milan which has a long history of luxury shoe production, sourcing much of the suede for this Autumn/Winter collection from a high-end tannery close by. “The perspex and elastic detail in the float ankle boot, even the thread used for hand stitching, are from the same town,” says Frances. “It’s a wonderful experience and a very satisfying way to work, within such a small community.” Committed to creating quality design that transcends trends, Frances designs for the empowered woman who seeks to exude both strength and elegance. “I wanted to create a collection that captured the characteristics of a selfassured attitude and quiet contentment,” says Frances. “As a result, my collections have notions of strength and rawness, as well as subtle romance.” Quickly rising through the ranks of footwear favorites, Dear Frances is a brand we love to wear and for Frances, that’s the pay off. “It’s hard to beat the feeling you get from seeing your very first collection come to life and seeing Dear Frances designs on people’s feet,” she says. “That is still one of the highest points of my journey so far.” DearFrances. com — ANGELA GILLTRAP

UN-WRAPPED WHEN FORM MEETS FUNCTION.

S

leek, practical and stylish; Jessica Hearnshaw creates accessories for the woman who yearns for quality and enduring style. Inspired by traditional Japanese packaging, Hearnshaw’s minimalist aesthetic shines through in Un-Wrap, her Autumn/Winter accessories collection. “A key notion of Japanese packaging is that the gift and the act of unwrapping the gift is just as important as what is inside,” says Hearnshaw. “The outcome was often not only practical for storage and transporting the object, but also produced a simple, beautiful shape free of all excess and extravagance.”

An interest in fashion and product design, led Hearnshaw to the world of heavenly handbags and accessories, studying at the London College of Fashion before launching her own eponymous line. “I think accessories play a strong role in our lives,” says Hearnshaw. “They combine practical function with fashion; they allow us to express our style even through functional pieces.” For Hearnshaw, the beauty lies in the juxtaposition of the two. “The enjoyment of design for me, is working to find the balance between form and function, instead of a compromise.” JessicaHearnshaw.com— JULIA STUART

FLAT ATTACK BLUE BIRD SWOOPS IN.

W

e love monogrammed fashion so when we stumbled upon Blue Bird shoes it was love at first sight—even if this is an entire line of flats! We caught up with co-founder and Marketing Director, Paula Proushan to talk about Blue Bird’s flat attack. What inspired you to create Blue Bird shoes? We wanted to inspire contemporary women and provide an alternative to heels; flats that can take a woman from dayto-night looking chic and strong while being extremely comfortable. We felt the need for flat shoes that were handmade, using 100% leather in the affordable luxury category. Were you surprised by people’s reaction? Since we first launched in Brazil, May 2013, our biggest challenge was to change the conception that women can be sexy and glamorous in flat shoes. However, we were surprised by

how quickly some stores adapted and gave in to this lifestyle. We also got the attention of several Brazilian celebrities who were fast to admit how much they like flat shoes. What were some obstacles you had to go through from concept to creation? We wanted to have an amazing product that everyone could say wow to. Since we designed the loafer from scratch, we adapted it to be a prime product that not only looks sharp, but feels wonderful to wear. How does being a Brazilian brand affect the way Blue Bird is manufactured? Brazil is known for its handmade leather goods and shoes. We also wanted to export the Brazilian lifestyle, so this was a huge advantage for us. However, one of our biggest obstacles was finding the right hands to make our shoes that could consistently keep improving and adhere to international standards.

Who is the Blue Bird wearer? She is self-confident, strong and empowered; a woman who is not afraid to break the rules. Tell us about the brand’s design background? Our designer Michelle Lima, studied fashion in Brazil and has had a history with shoes for the past ten years. She was the brand coordinator for Alexandre Birman and launched his brand in the U.S., as well as overseeing all of manufacturing. I lived in the U.S. for many years working on the commercial side of brands and studied at Parsons, in the heart of NYC. What’s on the cards for 2015? REFRESH A NEW TAKE ON OLD FAVORITES.

R

einventing the design of our favorite accessories has never been easy. Mixing form and function to create a wearable piece of endurable art is a task in which many have tried, and failed. For London College of Fashion graduate Taja Bobek however, it’s all in a day’s work. “The word ‘original’ is quite subjective,” says the up-and-coming designer. “To me, it doesn’t necessarily mean doing something crazy. I think it’s more about carving a unique link between various concepts and elements. If it happens naturally, then it is not difficult however, it certainly requires a lot of effort.” Originally from Slovenia, Bobek gravitated towards accessory design early on. “I have always been drawn towards product and furniture design so accessories seemed like an ideal specialism for me,” she says. Combining

materials such as leather and perspex, Bobek’s designs are futuristic yet wearable. Inspired by designers such as Dieter Rams and Pheobe Philo, Bobek studied the technical aspects of accessory design before adding her own unique twist; enjoying the challenge experimentation in design brings. “Accessories are undoubtedly my passion,” she says. “They are the first thing that catches my eye, and a beautiful new bag makes my heart beat faster, I am not going to lie! I currently stick to a simple backpack on a dayto-day basis, but I do have a range of bags for every occasion, of course.” Now based in London, Bobek is currently studying for her Masters degree at The Royal College of Art in Womenswear Accessories. nutshell, there is no average day, which is what makes it so fun. What’s the most fun part of your job? The most fun part of our job is assisting in the process of creating the style sets. Inspired by your favorite cult hits, we caught up with Black Lace Skin Jewelry co-founder, Mary Anne Richman, to talk style, inspiration and the allure of skin jewelry. What was the inspiration behind Black Lace Skin Jewelry? I’ve had this idea for years. As a jewelry designer, I loved the idea of creating a line of skin jewelry that would work with my existing line of high-end, high karat jewelry. The combination of real jewels with beautiful skin jewels creates such a dramatic, unique look—and adds conversation capital to your life. Why now? Trends have changed so much; tattoos are finally mainstream. I wanted to create a line of skin jewelry that would bling up your existing tattoos for special occasions, or if you didn’t have a tattoo, you could enjoy the fantasy of wearing one for a few days and then remove it. It’s a line of skin jewelry that’s edgy and makes you feel seductive and sexy! How do you come up with the designs? I partnered with award-wining graphic designer, Bonny Katzman, and together we explored the concept of a line of skin jewels based on Medieval times, but with a hip modern twist. Inspired by shows like Game of Thrones and the Tudors, our pieces include classic fleurs-de-lis, royal crowns, romantic roses and hearts, gothic crosses, winged armor, snakes, thorns, and feathers. All decorated with tiny Swarovski crystals; these sexy, sparkling adornments slide easily onto the skin. Black Lace Skin Jewelry is hypo allergenic and FDA Compliant, was that an important element for you? Yes, all our inks and adhesives are FD&C compliant. This was an important part of the product development, as we did not want our customers to have any skin reactions to our product. of our offering. Have you been surprised by the industry feedback? The feedback has been overwhelming! The moment you place a skin jewel on a person’s skin they are instantly in love and addicted to the product. Wherever I go wearing my skin jewelry, I am stopped and asked about it. It’s such a beautiful, sparkly adornment that makes you feel really sexy! The cool thing about the product, we’ve found, is that it has no age limits, everyone loves it and loves to wear it. What was the biggest challenge in launching Black Lace Skin Jewelry? I would say the biggest challenge has been, not enough hours in the day. It’s an endless amount of work building a new brand. It’s both very exciting but at the same time pretty grueling. Fortunately, I have found the right partner. Bonny and I perfectly compliment each other. From product development, package design and manufacturing, to aligning with the right celebrities and events, we both bring our unique skills to the table. It’s been quite a ride, but we are thrilled with the results so far. What has been your favorite Black Lace Skin Jewelry moment so far? I would say nothing could surpass being on the runway at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week New York as part of Malan Breton’s stunning 2014 Collection (right). We had just launched the company two weeks previously and had gotten the opportunity to collaborate with Malan to adorn his models with our Black Lace Skin Jewelry as part of his show. What have you loved about 2014? I am thankful to have been asked this question. I loved that 2014 restored my health and vitality. I had a chronic and debilitating ailment that had resulted from (strangely enough) a Fashion Week shooting injury that occurred in 2012. I cried a lot when nobody was looking because the pain was so great and I couldn’t let on to my friends and colleagues what was happening to me. My work as a photographer was suffering greatly because of the physical aspect of carrying my gear and the contortions my body does when I shoot. I was beginning to think that the life I have always known and loved was over. I was aging prematurely and thought that at the rate I was going, my life would surely end soon if I didn’t get relief and reverse this chronic affliction. An angelic colleague who noticed me limping, came to me in 2013 and suggested a certain doctor who specialized in this sort of thing and cheered me on as I doggedly pursued him for help. I had a surgery just before 2014 that would change my life for the better. Within weeks of the new year, 2014, I was bouncing around like the teenager I always thought I was. I was back to shooting with an intensity I had never felt before. In fact, the miracle of this surgery—and the great doctor who performed it and reassured me I would regain my life—is the source of my gratitude every day as I wake and count my blessings. My life and my health, restored, I am now chasing and conquering my goals and vision with a hunger and passion I have never before felt. Thank you, 2014, for healing me and giving me the passion to live and experience to the greatest degree, all that I set out to do. What have you learned from 2014? I have learned to believe in miracles. I always said I believed in miracles and I thought I did, for the most part, but inwardly, I have always been a skeptic. I was really becoming jaded before this injury, chronic pain and recovery. My life and passion has been renewed in the face of what I thought to be impossible (the restoration of my good health). The whole experience galvanized my faith that there is something so much greater than little old me at work. What are you looking forward to in 2015? I am looking forward to a 2015 of adventure, big love, and the pursuit of happiness. My brain goes into this incredible child-like excitement when I think about what’s next. Tangible stuff? The unknown—personal and professional—is an adventure and thrill of pursuit is the thing that makes me excited to ring in 2015

I had the opportunity to photograph the 25th Anniversary Campaign for fashion designer Carmen Marc Valvo. It was an awesome experience to collaborate with inspiring creatives to make something truly spectacular. In addition, I was sponsored by Lomography during fashion week, shooting with their unique line of cameras backstage for fashion magazines such as ODDA. I had a blast shooting backstage at shows I dreamt about as a kid, including photographing Donatella Versace, Naomi Campbell, and Nicki Minaj. What have you learned from 2014? To be patient and have gratitude for everything that comes your way! What are you looking forward to in 2015?I am planning on traveling the world to cover various fashion weeks. I love documenting off beat and intimate moments before the shows begin. 2015 for me will be a focus on working on my documentary imagery, shooting editorials, working with great clients, and taking time out to enjoy the small things in life… Like Kylie Minoque remixes and jars of Nutella!

DESIGNER DON O’NEILL BRINGS SEXY BACK.

What was the inspiration behind launching Rêve Public Relations? A few things propelled Rêve PR into existence: Certainly, my love for accessories coupled with my passion for talented, growing brands was one. Giving voice to emerging designers has been paramount to my work ever since I was the Market/Style Editor at Harper’s BAZAAR and Cosmopolitan International. The name “Rêve” is significant: “Un rêve” means ‘dream’ in French, which I speak fluently; and if you pronounce the word with an American accent, “revv”, it sounds like the starting of a motorcycle engine. I’m all about #revvving up brands that deserve to be seen, loved, photographed, purchased and worn! How did you get involved in PR? I’ve been blessed with having a rather non-linear career through fashion. I started out as a fashion writer, then segued to the fashion department, where I was on staff at international publications; followed by styling celebrities for the red carpet and beyond. Several years ago, I was on set for a client’s album cover shoot when I got a call from a friend who had left Versace to start up the VIP division at Karla Otto, and was looking for the right person to open and run her New York office. That was the beginning of my shift from editorial to PR. I had been missing the writing and strategic thinking, so the change was simultaneously challenging and refreshing. What skills do you need to work in fashion PR? Public Relations, like life, is a balance between being amicable and firm; always keeping your clients at top of mind, but also managing your time. I think Rêve

PR offers our clients an incredible value because we see things from not only a PR perspective, but also through the eyes of an editor and stylist, all the while expressing like a writer. What’s the biggest misconception about what you do? The biggest misconceptions are that PR is all about being fake and that PR is easy. I put 150% into everything we do and the results of my young company show that. True, I don’t sleep nearly as much as I should, but green juice, Kombucha and almond milk lattes help me through the day. Do you ever want to run away with all the samples? Even better, I get to stay put with all the samples! What do you love most about what you do? So much! I love hearing from clients when a new store has placed an order; it shows that we’ve been successful in helping create brand covet ability. I also love getting unsolicited emails from influencers saying that they love our clients’ work and want to photograph it, or wear it themselves. What does an average day look like? It is never the same—running to meetings, calls with clients—I love when I’m asked to help price or merchandise a client’s line. At the end of the day, we love our brands and are elated when we’re asked to do more than a PR’s set responsibilities. What’s been your biggest industry pet peeve? My biggest pet peeves in any human being are traits of arrogance and lack of loyalty. What big things do you have in the works for 2015? Rêve PR is based in the Financial District, now home to Condé Nast and, next year, Time Inc. They both swore I’d never be able to go cold turkey on my phone and social media and challenged me to try, in the early summer of 2014. It took me a few months to decide on a month that was free enough for me to lose out on my phone. I wanted to have a go at not being that person who spends all her time out and about checking in, taking photos and checking my messages rather than appreciating what I was seeing and doing. During my summer trip to Mexico, my phone had pretty much overheated and been useless without air-con, so I felt prepared for a full on social media and smart phone blackout. As well as a social media blackout I also decided to block time-wasting websites such as Buzzfeed, the Daily, Mail and others. The main reason behind the

blackout was to make an attempt at strengthening relationships. I wanted to cut ties and become mentally a little bit healthier. This is why I decided to donate all money raised to Mind, a UK charity dedicated to helping awareness and support by those affected by mental health problems, provide support like counseling, advocacy, housing and education. Having a personal history scattered by over-dramatic misery, a long list of counselors and bulimia in my teens, I felt this was a great, undervalued charity to donate too. What was it like the first day? The first day of the blackout was horrible. My Tube was late; I did some sort of injury to myself, my new crappy £8 MP3 player didn’t work, and I wasn’t really all that happy about it. I found myself composing tweets in my head, thinking how hilarious I could have been, publishing my various daily misfortunes. Not to mention, wondering things that I usually would have Googled and idled my time away with researching; things I don’t

really need to know like, “How to sit on the toilet correctly? What is best for your digestive system?” and “How many people are killed per year by birds falling out of the sky?” The first week? The first week was pretty hilarious. I complained a lot, but I’d already raised £500 for charity, so I knew it was worth it. Plus, being confined to a smaller social circle was so much cheaper and easier to keep track of! I read rather than listening to music on my phone, called my parents more often and spent more time with my close friends. It was also pretty liberating to stop constantly judging myself. To compare my life with the lives of other people; looking at holiday photos and wondering how those effortless bikini bods happen, feeling FOMO over images of wild nights out and group CheckIns. It was a chance to enjoy my social circles so much more intimately. Not to mention, that question “What have you been up to?” I relished that

question, being able to answer as honestly as I liked. Often the answer was ‘as little as possible’, an exciting story already shared Online or ‘sitting in a matching track suit with my boyfriend, eating pizza and not feeling even slightly bad about it’. Did it get easier? It got easier surprisingly quickly, occasionally I’d start typing a URL then realizing that I couldn’t access it, or receiving emails from friends telling me to check out a blocked link but mainly, with all access completely cut, it wasn’t that difficult to adjust to. Probably the lack of smart phone was the hardest bit; not being able to use instant maps. Once a meeting place had been set, I’d print a map and hope whoever I was meeting didn’t decide to meet elsewhere. However, asking for directions was fun. What did you learn about yourself? I think I learned that my reliance on my Online ‘community’ is pretty overwhelming. Being an only child and having lived on my own for quite a while I always thought of myself as incredibly independent. In reality, I’ve relied on other people’s support, acceptance, opinions, and advice maybe more than I should have. I think I care about general opinion far more than I let on and way more than is healthy! I learned that I have a great social network of my own. If I really needed advice or support I have a tiny phonebook of seriously awesome people that I can contact through traditional means. Oh, and that I don’t need to selfie when I get a new hair style to get complimented! Was there ever a turning point? The turning point, when I realized how wonderful the blackout could be, was when HEAVEN HAS HEELS holiday 2014 | @HHHEELS

my best friend got her wedding photos through. They all were on Facebook and I couldn’t see them. I went over to her place for dinner and over a bottle of wine all three of us went through the photos one by one. Laughing over the state of the bridesmaids, of which I was one (open bar is a killer for gals like us!), sniveling over the beautiful ceremony photos and cooing over the various toddlers and babies not to mention patting ourselves on the back for putting together such an awesome DIY wedding. If anything, the adjustment back into social media was harder. What was the most disappointing thing about being disconnected? There were a few friends I had to make a massive effort to get in contact with, usually I’d be able to pester them when I saw they were Online via Facebook... and email... And text... And maybe Whatsapp too. I sent more than one strongly worded text message. I know this was my choice but I sent out my details to people more than once and was genuinely quite offended when people didn’t bother responding. Usually, this was followed by an apology and a few drinks. I think I also missed out on a few events due to them being only on Facebook. We forget the importance of a real invite! Aside from this, I was not disappointed at all. Would you do it again? I would totally do the black out again. I think it might be something that is worth doing a couple of times a year. I’ve definitely changed my activities Online since the blackout. I don’t post as much; I leave checking my accounts until later in the day, and due to my Sony phone being dead again, I am back to playing Snake on the Nokia! I’m

taking what I see Online much less seriously, avoiding Online debates, switching off more and using social media channels for the odd shared story rather than relying on them to contact friends or post annoying, whiny cries for attention. Going back Online a month ago was completely overwhelming, I had to come back offline after half an hour and take a step back. Deleting Facebook and Twitter from my phone, after the blackout finished, has also been really great. Now I only use it from my laptop or desktop computer rather than sticking my head into social media when I’m out and about. Plus, this has cut down on all those annoying notifications I found it impossible to ignore. It’s been great to see what everyone has been up to, but mainly my feed is still filled with trivial life details, over-shares and funny cats. What does the future hold for your social media self? My future holds a few more blackouts yet, and I’m considering shutting down my accounts and replacing them with new ones, with a much smaller friends list. Would you recommend a black out for social media and smart phone addicts? I’d suggest taking a blackout month to anyone who uses social media daily. I think at least 75% of my friends list could do with taking a break. It truly is a liberating, rewarding and enriching experience. FINDING INSPIRATION Don’t discard the everyday as inspiration for your festive season looks. Sometimes it’s the things around us that can

provide the most inspiration. The look opposite for example, was inspired by a watermelon. “Let’s face it, there’s nothing sexier than looking edible,” says Shaw. Using bright colors on the eyes and lips is a guaranteed way to get noticed. If you want to really turn heads and have a blast apply gloss to your lips and lids, suggests Shaw. “Be sure to use long lasting matte lipstick and shadow then turn up the heat with show stopping colors!” METALLIC MADNESS “This season, metallics are really hot,” says Shaw. “If you want to have fun with your eyes for a sexy night out on the town, try using some gold, silver or copper shades on your lids. The look is high drama with heavy liquid liner and false lashes, but if you’re not aiming to dance all night in a dark club, try a simpler version with metallic shadow and smudgy pencil liner.”
