IN HER SHOES LARA QUINT TRANSPORTS US TO THE FIELDS OF VAN GOGH. His artwork is best known for its rough beauty, emotional honesty and bold color. This season, designer Lara Tomashchuk channels the great Vincent van Gogh in her latest Lara Quint collection transporting us to a world brimming with color, texture and beauty.
Quint look as this up-andcoming designer takes the fashion world by storm. “I love volumes, forms, details, color...” says Tomashchuk. “For my Spring/Summer 2014 collection I decided to do something bright and uncommon and there, van Gogh helped me.”
A graduate of the Kiev University of Technology and Design, Tomashchuk interned under Russian designer Tatiana Parfionava before launching her own line, Lara Quint. Clean lines and inspired prints have quickly become Tomashchuk’s signature Lara
Tomashchuk’s vision for the collection was that of an avant-garde, passionate traveler pacing the gardens and pavements of the world’s metropolises. Her re-interpretation of his paintings, as stylish as they are transfixing.
Aptly named “Vincent,” Tomashchuk transforms various prints and textures into a cohesive collection that includes quilted coats, jackets, gowns, rompers, clutches and footwear. “Creating images inspired by van Gogh was rather a challenge,” she explains. “I was trying to understand his thinking and drawing system. I love his rich and voluminous strokes and wanted to reproduce it on white textile which played the role of canvas.” Devoid of childhood fashion idols, Tomashchuk has always been inspired with nature, roaming her neighborhood as a young child with two square notebooks in which she would draw—”One dedicated to flowers, the other to insects,” says Tomashchuk. “I wasn’t born in the capital and I didn’t know anything about fashion designers,” says Tomashchuk. “So there were no fashion idols in my early childhood. At that moment Burda magazine was my Holy Bible. Then, when I was an adolescent, I adored John Galliano, as many young designers do.” For Tomashchuk, the Lara Quint wearer is a women whose personality combines adventure, beauty, profundity and secrecy—someone who is free and frank, she explains. As we head into summer, we couldn’t think of a person we’d rather be. — JULIA STUART

WALK THIS WAY DESIGNER IVA MINKOVA LIVES ON THE CUTTING EDGE OF DESIGN.
I
va Minkova belongs to the future of footwear, experimenting with new and innovative techniques to deliver heavenly heels with a tough-chic aesthetic. At the beginning of an exciting career, we caught up with the European upand-comer to talk style, inspiration and design. How did you become involved in footwear design? When I was still studying womenswear in Antwerp, I designed shoes for my collections and had them made for the runway by a master craftsman, but the whole process of “making” shoes was still very mystifying to me. I didn’t really see a career in footwear design as something feasible, I didn’t know where to begin... After I’d graduated, I wanted to come to London to do an MA and I’d heard from friends of mine that the Royal College of Art was an amazing school with a particular specialty in footwear design but I still wasn’t sure exactly what was involved. I started out in womenswear but switched mid-way. And that was that! Footwear had won me over.
How would you describe your designs? They are always very feminine. I don’t really like the idea of minimal; I prefer to call them clean. In my graduate collection, I tried to tackle issues of balance, to translate the idea of simultaneous fragility and strength, which perhaps doesn’t sound particularly eloquent or original. That’s why I liked the way my tutor, the designer Flora McLean, described them as severe, yet serene. What inspires you? I guess it all boils down to capturing a feeling, an atmosphere. Anything that brings out an emotion can be inspiring—a song, a paragraph in a book, a color, an image, an experience even… I gave up public transport completely last year and started cycling everywhere, so for my graduate collection I found inspiration in the texture of the concrete, the glittering broken glass, the green of the traffic lights in London at night. It sounds simpler than it is, because that was an experience I found truly moving and it is still only one layer of the story I have in my head.
IVAMINKOVA.COM
Still, in the back of my mind I always have this reflection on the essence of femininity somewhere in between the clichés of strong-minded vampish femme fatales, or light-headed, flighty dreamers… The muse behind my work would be someone who doesn’t fit a category and instead, checks “all of the above,” it’s a difficult state to explain, for me it’s always easier to talk about the material side of inspiration. What do you love about designing footwear? I like the frame that footwear gives me as a designer. There are a certain number of elements to work with—the heel, sole, upper, etc. but within those there is complete freedom. With clothes, it’s exactly the opposite; you have unlimited options and all the choices in the world that need to be narrowed down. I feel like people are much more daring with their accessories, they like to have fun and take risks, so I find footwear more liberating in that sense. When a woman wears your shoes, how would you like them to feel? I like to work on the inside and the soles of my shoes, to use the most exotic and expensive materials in the places that remain invisible to anyone but the wearer, because to me, that translates into a sense of true luxury and creates a very personal bond with an object that is already in such close contact with the body. This influences the way the body moves; how a person holds themselves… Comfort is imperative, but the idea that shoes make you feel a certain way when you wear them, is really about the fantasy you want to project. I have a very clear vision of what femininity looks and feels like for me, and I would
HEAVEN HAS HEELS summer 2014
want my wearer to feel like she is bringing her personal ideal to life. What’s the biggest misconception when it comes to footwear design? I’m not really sure how people imagine footwear design to be. Before I actually started doing it, I had no concept of what it entailed beyond the fact that you sketch something and you give it to someone to make. There are so many things to consider that there are probably so many misconceptions... We used to laugh about the idea people have of the fashion world, that it’s all glamorous parties, drugs and flamboyance... When in fact, it’s a tough business, with a very demanding work load, insane competition, excruciating hours and, more often than not, pretty bad pay. Devil Wears Prada (the movie, not the book) is really not that far off. It’s not as abstract as one might think, there are very practical issues to be solved at every stage, so creativity doesn’t often get free reign. But I think what’s most shocking about footwear in particular, is how small the footwear design teams are in most companies. In many cases it’s one or two people and you really need to be able to tackle every aspect of the design and production process. What does the future hold? I suppose the hope is that it becomes a brand one day. I’ve had great response and I have a lot of hope and confidence in my work, but unfortunately, there are a lot of elements about launching a label that bring me back to earth and have kept me from taking the plunge for now. — ANASTASIA RUBIN

MAD HATTER WELCOME TO THE HOUSE OF FUN.
For award-winning milliner Flora McLean, no material is out-of-bounds. The London-based fashion and accessory designer is known for creating part fashion/part art, a winning combination that catapulted the House of Flora into the design stratosphere since launching in 1996. Initially inspired by the likes of Claude Montana, Pierre Cardin and André Courrèges, McLean gained an MA in Fashion Womenswear at the Royal College of Art but it was her millinery that first captured the attention of the design world, winning a Kangol hat prize whilst still in college. Influenced by surrealism, constructivism and the Bauhaus movement, McLean produces two collections each year showing in London and Paris to a loyal and loving audience. “I like designing hats as I’m in control of the process,” explains the highly sought-after designer. “Some of the pieces I want to make in terms of jewelry, I need to get others to produce and some ideas get lost in translation.”
For McLean, the three essential elements to producing show stopping head wear are; “Good line, interesting materials and effortless construction.” A design philosophy she takes to heart as can be seen in her latest SS14 collection entitled, Ping Pong. Comprised of a variety of materials such as plexiglass and string, the angular lines attest to McLean’s love of architecture (and our love of fabulous design). Inspired by the world famous Wimbledon stadium— which McLean confesses she visits a lot—this highly coveted collection is just a taste of McLean’s design genius. With fans such as Lady Gaga and Beyonce, the sky is the limit as the House of Flora continues to push the boundaries of design. But what of the future? “More architecture and dancing in hats,” she says. “I love architecture... I may give up hats and become an architect.” Although we’d love a McLean country house, we’re hoping she sticks to heavenly head wear for now, racing season is upon us! — N.R.

DESIGNER JUDITH VAN LIET TAKES US BACK TO NATURE. Summer means enjoying the great outdoors and what better design inspiration than Judith Van Liet’s Nature’s Truth collection? A recent graduate of the Utrecht School of the Arts in the Netherlands, this fashion and accessory designer has been wowing the creative world since launching her own line in 2013. Her noteworthy collection explores the concept of individuality and the role it plays in design. “Nature’s Truth is based on the fact that every person is unique and should show his or her uniqueness, instead of our daily ‘uniform’ to fit within a group,” explains Van Liet. Experimenting with a variety of materials, the collection reveals an unmistakable homage to nature with earthy tones and natural materials juxtaposed to reflect the concept of self expression.
“I started with metal, glass, wood and wool and I ended up with sedge, wood and cotton cord, because those are all natural materials— like our personality—and together, formed a cohesive collection,” explains Van Liet. “Sky blue and warm yellow were the colors chosen because they are happy colors—it should be a release and a happy feeling to show your true self.” A self confessed “all-round designer,” Van Liet isn’t inhibited by choosing either fashion or accessories, she enjoys the challenge of focusing on different facets of the body, creating a variety of accessories— from necklaces and shoes to bags and shrugs. This out-of-the-box thinking is something she attributes to her geography and design education.

“Our country is very open minded,” she says of her homeland, the Netherlands. “Everything is always possible. During my education at the Art Academy in Utrecht, the teachers pushed us to think outside the box and across borders.” Perhaps it is this education which sees the young creative take on the design industry head on, finding inspiration in architecture and the underwater world as well as natural forms. Developing her business from the ground up has been her biggest challenge to date but one she is ready to take on. At the beginning of what is shaping up to be a long and successful career, Van Liet hopes to expand her brand over the next few years to include distribution in several countries, creating both artistic and practical pieces of clothing and accessories for a world that is in need of the extraordinary. — NICOLE ROSS

TANIA SPINELLI DISHES ON THE TRANS FORMATIVE POWER OF THE PERFECT HEEL.
F
rom Irina Shayk to Jennifer Aniston, the well heeled are drawn to the designs of American footwear designer Tania Spinelli and for good reason. Daughter of a Sicilian tailor and seamstress, fashion courses through her veins but it wasn’t until she moved to Sao Paulo, Brazil that she was bitten by ‘footwear fever.’ “It was my father in-law, Altemio Spinelli, an Italian footwear veteran, that first introduced me to footwear design,” says Spinelli. ”It was through him that I learned the craft and discovered it was my
true passion.” With an eye for design and an understanding of fashion, Spinelli honed her skills working for some of the industry’s most iconic designers before launching her eponymous label in 2005. “I love the art of design in general but as a product category in fashion, I believe that accessories are the most important pieces to invest in. The right shoe will not only transform an outfit but depending on the shoe, it can also transform the woman wearing them,” says Spinelli.
TANIASPINELLI.COM
Available around the world—from Saks Fifth Avenue to Harvey Nichols—the Spinelli woman is one who combines “intelligence with feminine powers of seduction,” says Spinelli. Her design philosophy focuses on creativity, quality and craftsmanship. Three very important elements for any luxury footwear label—particularly one looking to stand out from the crowd. It is this commitment to quality that keeps her fans coming back. “I want a woman to feel comfortable physically,” says Spinelli. “No woman looks sexy if she can’t walk in her shoes. I also want her to feel comfortable emotionally, as certain shoes are more than an accessory, they are an attitude. I want her to feel empowered, strong, sexy and confident in who she is.” Each Tania Spinelli collection is hand made in Venice, Italy. As we all know, quality materials and Italian craftsmanship do not come cheaply. “My biggest challenge so far, has been making luxury affordable,” says Spinelli. “In our efforts to do
so successfully, we launched our online store TaniaSpinelli.com in September 2013. The styles are exclusive to our online shop which allows us to eliminate the middle man and offer the same quality, Italian-made product, at an accessible price point
without sacrificing quality.” For Spring/Summer 2014 expect creative cut-outs and stiletto heels in Spinelli’s highly coveted collection. Edgy silhouettes in classic colors are both powerful yet feminine, on-trend yet unique. Inspired by everyday life, Spinelli’s influences range from architecture and natural forms to people watching—a personal favorite past time of ours. “I love to see what people are wearing and how they are wearing it,” says Spinelli. “While I look at the present for inspiration, I do revisit the past. I am inspired by all artists, past and present.” Melding her fashion past with her design future, the slogan for Spinelli’s footwear is:
Made in Italy, Worn in Hollywood. And indeed, footwear’s favorite star child may be on to something. Whether you’re walking the red carpet or headed out for a night with the girls, the right shoe has the ability to transform. Just ask Cinderella. — ANGELA GILLTRAP

HEAVEN HAS HEELS summer 2014
online confessions BEHIND-THE-SCENES AT OUR FAVORITE ONLINE DESTINATIONS.
We jet set to Hong Kong this month to talk shop with the founders of Shop des Créateurs, an independent fashion marketplace with an emphasis on up-and-coming designers. Run by two young French Fashionistas, co-founder Clara Hansen takes us behind-the-scenes of this hip, online destination. What was the inspiration behind ShopdesCreateurs.com? When I arrived in Hong Kong a few years ago, there were very few independent designer labels. You would only see Zara and Prada combinations, with a lot of people wearing the same clothes. Coming from a country where people are looking for unique pieces, we wanted to introduce the coolest contemporary brands into Asia to offer a wider and more curated choice to consumers. What’s the best thing about running an online boutique? The online industry is the newest of all, so it’s exciting to be a part of this new technology boom
where tools and processes are continuously evolving. This is also very challenging! Everyone wants to launch an e-commerce business, the key is to find the right business model. Is there ever a time when you want to steal all the items for yourself? All the time, as we carefully select the trendiest womenswear, menswear, accessories and soon, cosmetics and homewares. Everything we sell is unique, high quality and affordable, so yes! What does an average day at Shop des Créateurs look like? A lot of energy, sourcing and contacting the trendiest new designers worldwide, carefully selecting the best products, contacting the media to introduce Shop des Créateurs to new audiences, browsing our platform to see how we can improve the experience, chatting with our community via our social media networks, and much more...
What’s the most fun part of your job? I love all parts of it, but my favorite, is making fashion a community where designers, customers and bloggers all meet on the Shop des Créateurs platform to share a common passion for fashion. Who are some of your favorite designers at the moment? A sporty chic womenswear label from Seoul, Artessorio; an elegant and feminine leather handbag brand from Hong Kong and Mamishka, a sassy vintage jewelry designer form Paris! What’s next for ShopdesCreateurs.com? New brands, more editorial content and above all, community features to share styles, add comments and see who is looking at your product. Our aim at Shop des Créateurs is to create a whole new interactive digital experience; a fashion destination where you can spend your day buying, discovering and sharing.
innovation WELCOME TO THE FUTURE OF FASHION. Imagine a handbag that’s also a phone charger. Thanks to Loni Edwards, this concept has become a reality. The founder of U.S. brand, emPOWERED, Edwards has merged fashion with function to create a collection of handbags that can charge everything from your phone to your kindle. This month we caught up with the brains behind this beauty to talk style, design and innovation. How did the concept of emPOWERED come about? My phone would die around noon and I’d have to carry around my power cord and search for outlets to recharge. Not ideal! I yearned for a seamless way to recharge it on the go, so I set out to create a stylish solution. Has there been a lot of product development in regards to melding form and function? Definitely. Bringing the fashion aesthetic and technological elements together in a seamless way, without sacrificing on either, was our biggest challenge during the design phase. We went through a lot of trial and error until we created a powerful yet lightweight, easily accessible, universally compatible solution that was also stylish and well-made. What has been your biggest obstacle to date? Our biggest obstacle has been keeping up with demand. We sold out within 48 hours of launching the brand and had a waiting list of 600 people. Has there ever been a moment when you thought, “Yes, we’ve made it!”? It’s still pretty early, but reading customer emails about how much they love the product and seeing high numbers of repeat purchases is the best feeling. You’re manufactured in NYC, how has that shaped the way you deliver and design product? Manufacturing in NYC allows us to have a very fast
turnaround. We’re able to announce new preorders and deliver them in about a week or two. It also makes product development much easier as we can iterate and create new samples in a day. What does the future hold for emPOWERED? We just introduced a new style, the large leather tote, and will be introducing others as well as some unisex and men’s soon. We also have some great collaborations in the works. Stay tuned! — emPOWEREDBag.com HEAVEN HAS HEELS summer 2014

natural “Vienna straw” woven material; the playful blend of colors, a homage to interior designer David Hicks. The organic world also features strongly with natural elements such as bamboo contrasting with metallic embellishments; animal prints showcased on various styles and silhouettes. The pièce de résistance however, is undoubtedly the sandal with fougère “climbing vines” made of shaded rhinestone pave that surrounds the ankle without any support—a conceptual synthesis of the two themes. In fitting style, Italy’s fashion elite gathered in Milan to celebrate the launch of this highly coveted collection, one, we must admit, is on the top of our heavenly heel wishlist. — JULIA STUART

Each generation adds their own expertise, tenacity and determination to create a little piece of history... French eyewear brand Lafont, is one such legacy. Now run by Philippe Lafont it was his grandfather, Louis who first opened his Parisian store in 1923. The discreet green store front maintains its 1930s feel with original windows and wooden fittings. Inside, a collection of antique frames, from around the world is on display much like a mini optical museum. Here the first Lafont creations take pride of place. 11 rue Vignon 75008 Paris | Tel: 01 47 42 25 93

LOST
WHAT WOULD JEWELRY DESIGNER WENDY BRANDES TAKE IF STRANDED ON A DESERT ISLAND? WE FIND OUT. “Whenever people ask what three things I’d want to take [if I were stranded] on a desert island, my first answer is, “A plane, a satellite phone and GPS!” But my next three things would include a bottomless bottle of waterproof sunscreen, because I do my best to avoid the sun. Rings are like security blankets for me, so I’d want to have my 18K gold and black diamond Cleves swan ring. That one sits very flush against the skin, so if I’m doing a lot of manual labor—building a hut and fishing for example—it won’t get caught on anything. Finally, for entertainment, I’d want my Exotic Shorthair cat, FitzRoy, and the big bowl he likes to sit in. I know that sounds like two things, but FitzRoy and his bowl are inseparable! He is #thecatinthebowl on Instagram.” — WendyBrandes.com
