Kurt - So issue 04 is just around the corner and to tell you the truth I couldn’t be more happier that it’s finally going to print. The past 3 months have been somewhat testing on all levels for me. But at the end of the day it’s my passion for skateboarding and boardsports in general that keep me so stoked. I think about Trav being OS and the 21 countries that I have visited over the years. The one thing that’s been with me on all those travels was a board. Whether it was a surfboard, snowboard, kiteboard, mountainboard or skateboard, I live to ride. When you love what you do, you don’t work a day in your life. K

Trav - Well it’s been 3 months already since the last issue and what a time it has been! This issue has been mostly put together by my main man Kurt with help from Nath and Simon, while I‘ve been away with the easier, slightly more glamorous job of promoting the mag throughout the Euro tour and to 13 countries in total. Every issue we are growing like crazy and getting more and more recognition internationally and I couldn’t be prouder of everyone involved. Thanks to our international family for representing us at races, our contributors, Pete our print man and of course to the aforementioned guys. If you see them, buy Kurt some beer, give Nath a hug (he looks like a hugger) and hi-five Simon for me.

Q: All my friends have Justin Bieber haircuts and reckon I should get one too. I’m not sure tho. What do you recommend? A: First, I recommend you tell your friends to suck eggs. Then, pick one of the following five haircuts and tell your friends you are a skater, not a lame-ass teeny-bopper: Green hair (Scoot and Raggie) Military cut (Mischo) Fro (Daddow) No hair cut or comb ever (Gabe) Whatever style Yatesy is rocking By the way, this advice goes for chicks too! Q: Dear Dr Spice, Hypothetically my last night in Amsterdam and it’s pouring with rain, so I’ve opted to smoke the rest of my weed (about 1 month’s worth of weed for me) and sit in the hostel bar sipping on a beer. At this point the bar fills out with the best girl to guy ratio that I ever thought was possible; about 8 girls to 1 guy. How does one motivate one’s self to shake off super wasted mode and get into uber charming chatty self? Or is it a lost cause, as they’ve gathered I was busy typing this question into my mobile phone’s notebook, ….? Damn you Amsterdam. A: Dear “Damn you Amsterdam” This is a common problem where the level of wasted-ness and feeling of social isolation can overcome the desire to meet the opposite sex. In these instances, the best solution is not to remain sitting around in a daze, staring at all the lovely lasses. Instead, you’ve got to employ a technique I like to call “the Lion Within”. So, put your phone in your pocket, take a deep breath and quickly repeat to yourself “I am the Raddest, I am the Raddest, I am the Raddest Lion on Earth”. Then you stand up, raise your arms slightly to either side, and roar like a lion. Really roar, like really loud. It’s gotta be a deep baritone roar, not a high-pitched one, so this technique only works if you’ve hit puberty and your voice has broken. Then again, if you haven’t hit puberty you shouldn’t be in an Amsterdam bar drinking beer and smoking the hooch!! So, now you’ve got the attention of the people in the bar. This is called “Establishing your Domain” and is crucial. Once this is done, you have made your presence known and strength felt. You don’t have to do anything else, just stand there. The ladies will flock to you, for you are the Lion King – the Raddest Lion on Earth. If the attention seems to taper off, you can give a shorter, but still robust, second roar. If, for some strange reason, this methodology does not work, then do not worry, some women simply aren’t ready for the power of the “Lion Within”. Cut your losses, and try to make some friends by buying a round of “Buttery Nipples”... Next time – Dr Spice’s top 10 pick-up lines! Don’t miss it, they will change your life, transforming you from Loser to Stud!

Interview by Nathan Aveyard

I

f you’re going to longboard, sooner or later you’re going to eat shit. This doesn’t mean you need to get badly hurt, with months off while your mates are ripping it up. Either you fall really well and come up black and blue with some road rash or, you fall badly and end up breaking bones. Steve Daddow knows how to fall, he’s been a working stuntman for 10 years and an extreme hell man since he was born (most likely)! Here at Heelside we care about you, the reader, so we borrowed Steve, fresh off the set of “The Straits” to demonstrate some falling techniques and how they’ll save your arse, literally, in situations you’ll probably find yourself in.

Steve, can you tell us some of the key points on how to take a fall?

- Falling can be an art and learning gymnastics, martial arts, diving and certain sports can give you some body control which will help in a fall situation. - Doing a lot a hand down sliding will build up the upper body and help hold in those shoulders. - Always keep your chin in to your chest when falling backwards and taking a forward roll. - Knowing where you are during a fall can help in the prevention of a serious injury. - Stretching all the time and before a ride will help limber up the muscles ready for action. - Practice a few rolls on the soft grass or do some gymnastics. - http://www.youtube.com/user/DownhillDaddow

Now that the readers have practiced all that (make sure you do), can you talk us through how to apply them to these sequences? Let’s start off with THE FORWARD ROLL !!! In this sequence I get high sided off the skateboard after a stand up slide, which throws my body forward. At a slower speed, one would be able to run it out. This puts a lot of strain on the legs and back. Due to the lack of speed you will not slide, but most likely slam and could do a shoulder! In this situation I take another step which is basically to prepare for a forward roll. Depending on the last foot placement before the launch usually determines whether you’re gonna do a left or right side forward roll. Here I take off with my right foot so I will be doing a right side forward roll. As I take the dive, my right hand reaches out further and once it contacts the ground, I use it as a slight brace and pivot/roll from there and across my back. The roll starts from your right shoulder to your left hip, this is so we don’t roll on our spine. As you can see it continues to roll my body around and I end up on my stomach. Always keep in mind to tuck your chin to your chest which also helps in the roll. This fall has saved me many times in the skate parks and on the hill. It has also come in handy at a few slalom races.

All right. How are you feeling after that? Ready to take us through THE FORWARD SLIDE !! Yep, let’s do it. This sequence is a high speed bail where running it out won’t work !! So you’re gonna go down whether you like it or not, but one needs to be aware and prepare where possible!!! At a higher speed you will tend to slide rather than slam! Here I come in hot and get shot off the board and the only way is down !! I know I’m going down and the usual reaction is to reach out and brace the fall . You don’t want to strain too much and hold your body up as this could do a shoulder. I like to take the fall and ease down like a push up keeping my arm close to my body. Wearing pads takes a lot of strain off the body, allowing knees and elbows to take the initial contact of the fall. I keep my head up as I lower down into the long slide. Some hands down sliding is a great way to build up muscles to help in this sort of situation.

Just as skating brings with it escapism and solace, so do the tunes we have in our head when we skate; like our own virtual skate movie, we carve and slide to a multitude of colour, emotions and sound running through our minds to suit our preference. The songs we associate with skateboarding vary from person to person, but the one thing we seek in a good skating track remains the same – the feeling it brings when we hear that tune, subliminally stimulating us to react through our movements. When finding a good skate tune, the choices are endless; fast pumping punk riffs, lyrically hard-hitting hip hop, dreamy post-modern rock, dub step creations, drum, bass, breaks and beats - but where’s the FUNK?! We recently caught up with guitarist David Thor and keyboardist Callum Riley from the Melbourne funk group ‘The Cactus Channel’ to talk about their music, their latest track ‘Pepper Snake’ and how it is that they have come so far in such a short time. When you first hear the track ‘Pepper Snake’ it sucks you in with its simplicity, maturity and melodic groove that drips with pure funk - it’s the perfect sound that sits so well with your afternoon skate run or morning roll. Brimming with bass and brass yet lyrically void, it’s the kind of music that allows you to creatively focus on your skating, but still provides a smooth audible backdrop to the flow and rhythm of your session. It’s hard to believe that this group of 10 musicians are all still in high school! Recent grand finalists in the ‘Unearthed High’ competition on Triple J, David noted “Triple J has given us good exposure so far, it’s pretty good to be in the top 6 of Unearthed High. I completely forgot that we signed up for the competition and then we got a call saying ‘Hey, you made the top 30’.” What started as a few friends jamming has quickly evolved into a diverse and skillful arrangement of various instrumentalists ... “There was a core group of about six of us, we just started jamming and writing songs. The great thing with us is that we are all good friends outside of the band, which makes it so much more enjoyable. It’s a mix between a lot of us, a lot of the ideas come from our bassist Henry, he tells us what he’s thinking, then the band collaborates and changes things. Someone will come up with something and we’ll play it all together, the rhythm section will turn up at jam, we’ll all sort of jam on it .” Already gaining notoriety in, and outside of their home town, they have played some pretty cool gigs, but not without hurdles. “Our first major support (show) was with a guy called ‘Charles Walker And The Dynamites’ out of Nashville Tennessee - that was pretty cool, that went well and then earlier this year we supported The Cat Empire. That was great fun and there were so many people.” Being underage and playing licensed venues has been a little different for them, “It’s generally a bitch. We played at The Espy at a Japan benefit gig, and when we arrived at the door the bouncer was like ‘have you guys got ID?’. We said ‘nah, we’re playing’ and he said ‘well, you need ID’ and we came to a decision that we had to be out of the premises when we weren’t playing. Once we start touring we’ll all be 18. There’s so many people that come to all the gigs as well, they just rock up and want to see funk gigs”. Callum recalls the debacle, “We had to hang around for ages and do sound check and then piss off, come back and play and piss off again, and we were playing for free”. Skating seems to be at the beginning of everything these days, the building blocks for a lot of people’s futures, and so it was no different for David “I used to be really into skating, I was like ‘I’m never going to stop skating’ from age 10 to 15 or 14, I think I was getting pretty good and then music started becoming more important and I sort of slowly stopped. I’ve got to be more careful with my body now.” Their music has a warmth not found in most new music these days, a window to the past and a glimpse of the future, something you can really get your vibe on to. We asked them what they thought about pop music and radio songs at the moment and where they think they fit into the scheme of things. David -“Haha, R&B, don’t you mean ‘Rhythm and Beat’ – I don’t know, it doesn’t really seem like there’s much effort going into that music, it’s all computerised.” Callum - “It’s just people that have heaps of money so they can just pretty much put as much into it as they want, and get as famous as they want by spending as much money as they can on it.” With each offering from the group released on vinyl 45s, it seems they have chosen the path less travelled in the music world, and it’s working. Callum - “Our ‘Pepper Snake’ 45 sold out pretty fast and the distributors sold out of it as well, so the actual record did really well, we don’t have heaps of stock left.” David - “I think with funk and soul music it’s more of a cultural thing to release things on vinyl - I guess we’re trying to keep that tradition. We’re also releasing it on CD and in digital form, so anyone can get it. We just have fun on stage - I know we are a funk band but I think we’re slowly getting our own sound as well. It’s just dance music in a primal and traditional sense. The best thing about playing live gigs is when you see the people dancing. If we’re getting into it more, then the crowd are getting into it even more.” So what’s coming up for The Cactus Channel? With plenty of talent, aspirations, dreams and motivation backing them it seems they’re well on their way. David - “When I’m older I don’t want to be stuck in a shitty office job, the 9 to 5 boring life, it’s all for the fun. Skating and music, they always start off as a hobby, but if you can make it a career that’s the greatest thing that can happen. We’d love to travel, with the guys over in the States haha, but with the debut album coming out next year there’s a pretty high chance of us doing a national tour.” Callum - “Getting a record out, it’s good because it means we can make money off just having fun. If we can keep that going, I mean, I don’t think any of us are in it for anything but having fun, and we do gigs because we enjoy playing gigs and record because it can help fund us to continue on.” Definitely worth a look, this group offers a dynamic and refreshing sample of deliciously good funk and jazz, a perfect combo to cruise with when you head out for your next roll. The Cactus Channel play the HiFi Bar in Melbourne on September 10 with the iconic blues legend Syl Johnson, and then at The Corner Hotel with ‘Public Opinion Afro Orchestra‘ on September 23rd.
