HOUSTON ART FAIR Welcome to the 2016 Houston Art Fair! This year marks the 6th edition of the fair and we thank our exhibitors, Host Committee, Cultural Partners, and sponsors for their support of the fair. Thank you to FotoFest International, our neighbors here at Silver Street Event Space and newfound friends, for their support of the Houston Art Fair. We are extremely pleased to have this year’s Opening Night Preview benefit this prestigious Houston organization. We have made some exciting changes this year, the most dramatic being our new location at Silver Street Event Space. We are thrilled to be in this unique venue in the heart of the Washington Avenue Arts District, home to the largest concentration of working artist studios in the country. Special thanks to Jon Deal, Steve Gibson, and Paul Hobby for their support and partnership and of course, a very special thank you to Susannah Mitchell, Director of the Washington Avenue Arts District, for her tireless efforts! Among our other changes were a name change and date change to coincide with the many art events in Houston this week in September. This enables local, regional, national, and international collectors and patrons to visit Houston at one time to see all that Houston has to offer during this exciting time. Be sure to also attend our Programming and Events for this year’s fair, which offer great insight into individual artists, genres, as well as a view of the art world on a wider scale, including a talk by Perry Price, Executive Director of the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft, whom we have known for some time and are thrilled with his arrival in Houston! Perry will discuss his new role and vision as he leads the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft into a new era. Also, Steven Evans, Executive Director of FotoFest, who will address the latest trends in photography and how this medium continues to rapidly evolve and excite! We are thrilled to welcome Cheech Marin for his Mezcal tasting and booksigning for his newest publication, Papel Chicano Dos: Works on Paper from the Cheech Marin Collection. Also not to be missed is a film presented by Redbud Gallery on James Surls and the installation of this monumental piece on Kirby Drive in Houston. We want to thank our Exclusive Auto Sponsor of the fair, Lincoln Black Label, for their generous support of Houston Art Fair 2016. We also want to thank our additional sponsors, Austin Eastciders, Boomtown Coffee, Deep Eddy Vodka, El Topo, Oh My Gogi, Perrier, and Tres Papalote. Finally, we are thrilled to launch the Houston Art Fair and look forward to being a part of this wonderful community. This year marks the first fair since Urban Expositions acquired Houston Art Fair and we look forward to building upon the quality and reputation of the fair. Welcome and enjoy Houston Art Fair 2016! Lectures & Events Saturday, October 1 10 am | Buffalo Bayou Cistern | VIP Event | RSVP Required
Private Tour of Buffalo Bayou Cistern The Cistern at Buffalo Bayou Park is a former drinking water reservoir built in 1926 for the City of Houston. As one of the city’s early underground reservoirs, it supported the municipal water system’s goals of fire suppression (water pressure) and drinking water storage. After operating for decades, an irreparable leak was discovered and after a few years, the reservoir was decommissioned in 2007. In 2010, the City of Houston was sourcing vendors to demolish the Cistern. At the same time, Buffalo Bayou Partnership was developing the $58 million Buffalo Bayou Park project and “discovered” the site. Realizing its historical and architectural significance, Buffalo Bayou Partnership with the City of Houston worked to take over development and maintenance of the space. Open to VIP and FIRST LOOK pass holders only. Limited space available. RSVP required (kate@urban-expo.com). Transportation is not provided. 1 pm | Lecture Hall

FotoFest International at the HOUSTON ART FAIR These Are the Vistas: Moving Image Works featuring A.K. Burns and Tom Turner In the context of the Houston Art Fair, FotoFest International presents a specially curated program of three projected moving image works by two acclaimed artists. Entitled These Are the Vistas, the works engage the concept of spectacle through distinct approaches. The project poses the art fair as an ideal context to critically consider spectacle and the process of looking. A U.S. artist based in New York who works across many media, A.K. Burns shows her video work Orchid Show, 2013 that documents the annual orchid show at the New York Botanic Garden. The spectacle of the flower show is compulsively captured, reproduced and glossed over by visitors and in turn by the camera shooting the video, observing the observers, and posing a critical merging of notions of nature, display and beauty. Texas-based artist Tom Turner exhibits Lunar Calendar – 2015 Moon Phase. Turner writes that in this work he “investigates the cycling of the lunar calendar and how our perception of time changes by stretching the light spectrum. Through the use of appropriated lunar calendars this work confronts ownership of the celestial while disrupting our fixed perception of Moon.” In this way, Turner examines our relationship to time, nature, and phenomena. The artists’ works demonstrate the ambition of FotoFest and its commitment to discovery. An international non-profit photographic arts and education organization based in Houston, Texas, FotoFest created the first and longest-running international Biennial of photography and new media art in the U.S. The Biennial and all FotoFest programs exist as a platform for art and ideas. FotoFest organizes year-round exhibition and public programs, as well as a year-round classroom-based learning program, Literacy Through Photography, which uses photography to stimulate visual literacy, comprehension, writing and analytical thinking. The acclaimed FotoFest Biennial and related programs are known for their commitment to social issues and the presentation of important contemporary and historical artwork that is not widely shown by mainstream arts organizations.

FotoFest creates new opportunities for cross-cultural and international exchange through photography and new media art. In addition to its exhibitions, it sponsors one of the most respected international portfolio reviews for artists as part of its Biennial programs. FotoFest also organizes forums around art and civic issues, artist forums, workshops, events for collectors, and an international Biennial Fine Print Auction. FotoFest publishes a full-color catalogue for each Biennial, and in recent years has published a scholarly hardcover book to accompany the main thematic exhibition. In 2016, the Biennial theme, curated by FotoFest co-founders Wendy Watriss and Fred Baldwin and executive director Steven Evans, addressed humanity’s relationship to the Earth through the exhibition and book CHANGING CIRCUMSTANCES: Looking at the Future of the Planet, including 34 international artists and hundreds of artworks. FotoFest was founded in 1983 and has curated or sponsored ground breaking exhibitions on photo-based art from Latin America, China, Russia, Central and Eastern Europe, Korea, Japan, England, Germany, France, the Middle East and North Africa. It has created presentations on Latino photography in the U.S., African-American women artists, new talent from Texas, artists working with digital technologies and Contemporary U.S. Photography. Exhibition programs have addressed a range of issues, including Water – The Global Crisis, Artists Responding to Violence, the Global Environment, LGBTQ communities, the events of 9/11, and Guantánamo. Cassera, Owner The East Coast-based Cassera family art business was founded by the late George D. Cassera in 1960. Over the past 50 years, the gallery has maintained a strong emphasis on fine art and design. In 2011, David A. Cassera opened two Pacific Northwest gallery locations (Vancouver B.C. and LaConner, WA) while maintaining a seasonal NYC presence. David A. Cassera, an international specialist in the traditional arts of Africa, Oceania and the Americas, has continued with his father’s fine art and design legacy but with an important focus on ‘Primitivism’. ‘Primitivism’ is a Western art movement that borrows visual forms from non-Western or indigenous peoples, such as Picasso’s embrace of African and Oceanic sculpture during the birth of Cubism. From a curatorial perspective, we place equal emphasis on the “how” and the “why” - taking into consideration both process and context. While purpose and meaning is fundamental to the value of art to humanity, quality in execution, we believe, is fundamental to the value of craft within the world of the visual arts.
