I invite you to explore the fantastic booth displays created by the 80 participating galleries. The fair presents a range of important artwork from contemporary and modern masters, emerging and mid-career, to today’s hottest stars. Explore the awe-inspiring public installations and eyepopping sculptures.

Take a seat for the highly informative and entertaining lectures program which brims with insider perspectives and advice. The panels are geared for both novice and experienced collectors. See the following pages for a description of these memorable events and displays.

The Selection Committee has worked long and hard in their efforts to present fairgoers with a dramatic viewing experience that provides access to the finest contemporary and post-war art on the market today.

HFAF is again international in scope, proudly showcasing galleries from 11 countries.

I believe that HFAF is an excellent brand for the city of Houston - a dynamic metropolis that boasts 100 Museums and a world-class art community. It is our intent to establish this event as the premiere “mustattend” art fair in the southwest region, and the prime access point for Latin America. We have barnstormed around the state, and promoted around the nation in efforts to attract the most ardent and passionate art lovers in this part of the country.

Trenton Doyle Hancock He was one of the youngest ever to be featured in the prestigious Whitney Biennial exhibitions.

(2000 and 2002). He has had one person exhibitons at CAMH, Modern Art Museum at Fort Worth, and MoCA, North Miami. Mr. Hancock was a 2002 Core Artist in Residence at the Glassell School of Art, MFAH. He will receive the HFAF Artist of the Year Award on Thurs., Sept. 13, at 8pm, at the Talley Dunn Gallery booth–and will appear in the Theater on Sunday, Sept. 16 at 4pm.

12pm – From Vision to Reality: Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art Presented

by Don Bacigalupi, Director, The Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art. Don Bacigalupi will introduce us to The Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, which opened with great anticipation in November of 2011 in Bentonville, Arkansas. He describes how the Museum successfully unites art and landscape, and reviews prominent works from its spectacular collection.

1pm – Curatorial talk MFAH Core Factor With noted collectors Brad Bucher and Victoria Lightman. Join the curators as they discuss the importance of the Core program and its influence in the contemporary art world. Talk will be held in the MFAH Core Factor exhibition space at the front of the fair.

2pm – Art As Investment Moderated by Fran Kaufman, Art Advisor, Art + Banking. An exploration of the economic and emotional investment in an artwork, and how we balance them.

Programs and Special Events Saturday, September 15 Fair Hours: 11am to 7pm 12pm – Trading Ideas: The Curator and the Art Market Discussion with Claudia Schmuckli, Director & Chief Curator, Blaffer Art Museum at the University of Houston; Michelle White, Curator, the Menil Collection; Janet Phelps, Independent Curator & Advisor, Houston. The discussion will address opportunities and challenges in the context of both collecting and non-collecting institutions while also high-lighting the role of independent curators and curatorial programming within the art fair setting.

1:15pm – Artist as Designer: The Role of Function and Design in Contemporary Art Presented by Rebecca Kong, co-founder of Artware Editions. She will present a brief history, examples of collaborations, and an understanding of design’s place in the art market. Kong will give a visual presentation of how contemporary artists confront functionality in their work.

2pm – Defining Reality: Art and the Discussion of it Online Moderated by Michael Petry, Director of MOCA London. This panel explores the fine and converging line between real and digital images Panelists: Kelly Klaasmeyer, Editor of Glasstire; Tyler Rudick, Staff Writer, CultureMap; Massa Lemu, Artist & Critical Studies Fellow at the Core Program, Glassel School of Art, MFAH. 3pm – A Conversation with Cheech Marin Interviewed by Catherine Anspon, PaperCity Magazine’s Fine Arts Editor and author Texas Artists Today. Primarily known as an actor and comic (half of the comedy team Cheech and Chong) Marin has developed the finest private collection of Chicano art in the country. He states, “Chicano art is American art. My goal is to bring Chicano to the forefront of the art world.” His traveling exhibition broke attendance records during its groundbreaking 15 city tour during 2007-2011. At HFAF, he curates the Thomas Paul Gallery booth (#201) to introduce the next generation of gifted Chicano artists, all of whom are from Texas.

4pm – Art & the City: Building a Public Collection Moderated by Matthew Lennon, Director of Civic Art and Design, Houston Arts Alliance. Panelists: Karen Farber, Director of the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for the Arts, Houston, & Libbie Masterson, Artist.

Sunday, September 16 Fair Hours: 11am to 6pm 12pm – The Mainstream and Other: Collecting Photography Moderated by Wendy Watriss, Artistic Director & Co-Founder of FotoFest International. The panel will explore the history of photography collecting, the state of the fine art photography market today, who is collecting photography, and how gallerists decide on who they represent and why. Panelists: Anne Tucker, Gus & Lyndall Wortham Curator of Photography, MFAH; Maria Ines Sicardi, Sicardi Gallery; John MacMohan, photography collector and venture capitalist, NYC; Paul Kopeikin, Kopeikin Gallery.

2pm – Houston Film Society Showing Houston Cinema Arts Festival 2012: Visiting Artists Preview Program.

Come preview a tantalizing selection of short films by several of the media artists whose work will be featured in the upcoming Houston Cinema Arts Festival, scheduled for November 7-11. The artists bridge the worlds of visual, performing, and media art, and reflect the multi-arts focus of the festival.

Alfredo Ginocchio gallery was founded in 1988. Its main objective is the international promotion of Mexican and Latin American artists. For over 24 years the gallery has participated in important international art fairs in the United States, Europe and Latin America.

The gallery has prepared more than 139 solo and group exhibitions at the gallery and has also participated in the formation of art collections and collaborated with major museums in Mexico and Latin America.

The Gallery is dedicated to neofiguration of modern, established artists such as Santiago Carbonell, Roberto Cortázar and Bruno Widmann.

Especially dedicated in neofiguration to modern and contemporary art, Alfredo Ginocchio encourages a new generation of young emerging artists: Ofill Echevarría, Claudio Gallina, Xevi Vilaro, Demian Flores, Cesar Rangel, Hugo Lugo and Luis Selem among others.

Antena Estudio is an Artist-run gallery created in the year 2005 by artists Andrés Basurto and Laura Ortiz Vega. Our mission is to promote the work of young, emerging, contemporary, Mexican and International artists, functioning at the same time as a project dedicated to the creation of a new generation of collectors. We exhibit artists that through their work incorporate vernacular traditional techniques of representation with different notions of popular culture. She does this by encasing video in hand-blown glass sculptures, called ‘Bubbles’, as well as projecting video onto surfaces of suspended weather balloons, which she calls “Videoplanets”. Born in 1979 in Zurich, Katja Loher has had solo exhibitions in the United States, Israel, Italy, Switzerland, and the Czech Republic, and her work is currently featured in a solo exhibition at the Museu Brasileiro da Escultura in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Half Rest is a site-specific installation by artist Joe Mancuso that is both dynamic and rhythmical. Monumental in size, Mancuso’s Water Lilies envelop the exterior of the booth, inviting the viewer to experience the intricacy of nature and organic form. His sculpture, Poly Bouquet, sustains the movement and flow, as each delicate flower evokes a sense of space through meticulous attention to detail. Lastly, Mancuso’s painting Concerto resonates with rhythm, as ribbons of latex intertwine upon the canvas to create an all-encompassing work. Half Rest is a lyrical and awe-inspiring installation, which is reflected by Mancuso’s subtle, powerful works.

About the artist: Internationally known artist, Joe Mancuso, currently lives and works in Houston, Texas. He received his MFA from Indiana University and BFA from Colorado State University. Mancuso’s solo exhibitions have included the Museum of Fine Arts Houston; the El Paso Museum of Art; AR Contemporary, Milan, Italy; New York University; and Galveston Art Center. In the 1980s, the gallery was one of the first to open in London’s East End, in a former laundry/fur storage facility in Hackney, and the space became known as Flowers East. Matthew Flowers, Angela’s son, took over day to day operations in 1989. In 1997, the gallery expanded further with a Los Angeles space, at Bergamot Station. There are now two gallery spaces in London: a West End premises on Cork Street opened in 2000 and in 2002 the gallery moved from Hackney into a 12,000 sq foot industrial space in Shoreditch, East London. Galeria Moro opens its doors in 1994 to offer art lovers and collectors of contemporary art, a more innovative and updated view of the artistic events in Venezuela and Latin America.

From its early beginnings, Galeria Moro has contributed in creating awareness and promoting art through different shops and talks. Moreover, it has participated as curator in several exhibitions. Nowadays, Galeria Moro still holds its Contemporary approach offering the best of Venezuelan and Latin American Contemporary Art.

Kashya Hildebrand founded her gallery in Geneva in 2001. Since 2004 the gallery has been located in the center of Zurich, featuring a large exhibition space. The main focus of the gallery lies in its dedication to the support and the representation of an international group of young, emerging artists through solo and group shows. The galleries artists challenge pre-conceived notions of nationality and cultural identity, creating an environment in which established norms become blurred and characterizations from seemingly contrasting cultures occupy the same visual space. This juxtaposition leads to a simultaneous renunciation and acceptance of the traditional and the contemporary, creating an environment that is in constant flux. Religion, politics, nationality and culture are treated as the foundation of identity, depicted and disseminated to varying degrees. Through painting, collage, sculpture, photography and installation work the artists convey the contestations of the contemporary political landscape.

The Kopeikin Gallery opened in Los Angeles in 1991 and since then has opened over 150 primarily one artist exhibitions. The history of the gallery dates back to 1994 when it started as Salar Center for communication and art. Its main objective was to promote the local art scene in its various forms and to support emerging talents. In 2001, the Center closed its doors and became the studio of renowned artist Gastón Ugalde. In 2006 it changes its name to Salar Galería de Arte, which becomes a platform for dialogue and education of Contemporary Bolivian Art abroad. The gallery represents a select group of international artists and participates in various art fairs and exhibitions in America, Asia and Europe. Salar collaborates with other galleries and cultural institutions around the world through various initiatives that aim to increase the understanding and appreciation for contemporary art within the national and global audiences it serves. From its inception, Salar has been characterized by its strong curatorial direction and vision.

Sammer Gallery opened its doors in March 2002 on Ponce de Leon Blvd. in Miami, Florida. After 10 years the gallery has become a reference for Latin American geometric-abstraction. Both past and current. We have placed works and consulted for several museums and private institutions, in cities like, Boston, New York, Long Beach, Miami, Buenos Aires, Madrid, Montevideo, Paris and London. Susan Eley Fine Art was founded in the spring of 2006 by Eley as a salon-style gallery. Her vision was to make original lithographs and artist books, and she began working with artists such as Larry Rivers, Jasper Johns, and Robert Rauschenberg. Bill Goldston joined Grosman in 1969 and has since worked with younger artists and master printers in the mediums of stone and offset lithography, intaglio, woodcut, digital printing, and bookmaking to continue Grosman’s legacy. Today ULAE is represented in the collections of many major museums including The National Gallery of Art in Washington DC, Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, Tate Gallery in London and the National Art Museum of China in Beijing.
