Welcome to the Inaugural Palm Springs Fine Art Fair Never before has the Southern California desert witnessed such an expansive display of important post-war and contemporary art. We proudly present a lineup of nearly 50 carefully selected top tier galleries. Choose from 2,000 outstanding artworks representing the finest work by world renowned artists, ranging from brilliant up-and-comers to “big name” masters. Galleries were selected not only on the caliber of their artists program, but also on their high integrity, excellent reputation, and commitment to excellence. Held during the popular Palm Springs Modernism Week, and the Palm Springs Art Museum’s wonderful Backyard Oasis show, this action-packed Presidents Day weekend schedule of events marks the apex in cultural offerings in the desert. To add to the weekend’s many attractions, the fair has produced several stimulating and educational components, which are detailed on pages 4-7. Don’t miss our museum-quality show, The Big Picture: Paintings from Southern California from 1960-1980, curated by L.A. art critic Peter Frank. Christened as a Pacific Standard Time Point of Interest by the Getty Museum, these 40 plus works were thoughtfully culled from the valuable inventories of our exhibitors, and are for sale. Not to be outdone, discover our 50 year retrospective entitled Judy Chicago, Material Girl, astutely organized by David Richard Contemporary. Congratulations to the fair’s distinguished honorees, artist Judy Chicago (Lifetime Achievement Award) and performer Cheech Marin (Arts Patron of the Year) both of whom will be interviewed in the theater. Our hope is to establish the Palm Springs Fine Art Fair as a regular stop on the winter circuit for the art cognoscenti and a “must attend” annual art event on the local calendar. Our intention is to demonstrate to the art world that the Palm Springs region is a passionate hotbed for art collecting and patronage, worthy of international recognition. We believe our range of galleries and art work is among the most compelling and relevant offered on the West Coast. Enjoy the experience. And collect. Sincerely,
Rick Friedman

THE BIG PICTURE: POSTWAR ART FROM SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA
T
By Peter Frank
he Getty Institute’s “Pacific Standard Time” initiative is barely half over and already it has permanently changed the way the art world regards southern California. Capping a decade or so of revelatory exhibitions and publications, in the state and elsewhere, the constellation of shows gathered under the PST rubric have firmly and conclusively demonstrated the distinction, sophistication, innovation, variety, and volume achieved by artists working in Los Angeles and environs a generation or two past. In doing so, PST has relied on certain prominent artists to attract attention, while at the same time revealing the historical and aesthetic, and by extension commercial, viability of many lesser-known but equally strong and engaging artists. The recovery of these artists’ work into the current art market may be an incidental result of the Getty initiative, but it is an important one, for the artists, their admirers, and art history alike. It cements PST’s massive effort in historical revision, and also reflects a larger market trend, certainly in the United States, to revalue the work of the postwar period in general. While Europeans have always maintained a demand for the work of artists who led them out of the war’s devastation and into a period of recovery and cultural reformulation, Americans are only now coming to comprehend the complexity of their own postwar art scene. We now see that there were many more than a dozen abstract expressionists, there were many more significant movements than abstract expressionism and pop art, there were many more participants in the discourse of the time than a few white males, and there were many more places than New York where artistic thinking and practice were revolutionized. Without “Pacific Standard Time,” collector and dealer interest in the highways and byways of postwar Los Angeles art would have risen anyway, part of the previously mentioned resurgence of interest in mid-century and late modernism. You could even argue that such commercial resurgence was one of the factors to prompt the organization of PST, rather than the other way around. PST does provide the art audience an armature for understanding and appreciating the wealth of accomplishment that now comprises a dynamic segment of the (yes, international) art market. The art baby boomers grew up with, and the art baby-boomer artists produced, constitute this everything-old-isnew-again market segment; but PST shows that collectors have many more reasons than nostalgia for seeking out this still-vibrant work. 8
“The Big Picture” is in this regard an echo of an echo – ironically enough, given the vibrancy of the artwork it contains. Everything in the Palm Springs Fine Arts Fair’s centerpiece exhibition has been lent by, or courtesy of, galleries participating in the fair. It honors “Pacific Standard Time,” and honors Palm Springs’ own well-established Modernism Week, with a selection of painting, sculpture, and work on paper as varied and unpredictable as the period it represents. In many respects it is remarkable that so much great artwork from a now-fabled time and place can still be acquired. Of course, “The Big Picture” can’t provide a complete overview of postwar art in southern California. Nothing can – not even the parade of shows that have constituted PST itself. But the show here in Palm Springs does touch on some of the highways and byways of this period and locale. The Finish/Fetish-Light-and-Space phenomenon, perhaps the quintessential LA movement, manifests in works by DeWain Valentine, Peter Alexander, and several other prominent artists, while that tendency’s predecessor, Hard Edge (or Abstract Classicism), is represented by work of June Harwood. Exemplary Pattern Painting by Kim MacConnel, one of the movement’s founders, is included, and Patssi Valdez, among others, speaks to the cultural and social aspirations of southern California’s Latino communities. (Of course, our separate show overseeing five decades of Judy Chicago’s work heralds the politically as well as aesthetically charged emergence of women artists during the PST period.) But there were so many artists “doing their own thing,” artists such as David Hockney and Sam Francis who proved inspiring to artists around the world without becoming figureheads for any specific movement. These individuals, too, are represented in “The Big Picture,” allowing this show to be a sum of very different parts and at the same time a rounded view of an art scene undergoing staggering growth and astounding change. As curator of “The Big Picture” – and a dyed-in-the-wool baby boomer and enthusiast for southern California art – I am grateful to the Hamptons Expo Group for the opportunity to pay “Pacific Standard Time” and the art and artists of the era such homage. I am also grateful to the galleries participating in the Palm Springs Fine Arts Fair for their cooperation, whether or not they were able to lend to the exhibition. And I am grateful to the visitors to the PSFAF and the Modernism exhibition next door for giving “The Big Picture” a serious look. I am also hopeful that, along with the rest of PST, “The Big Picture” encourages further reconsideration of postwar art in southern California – and, perhaps, reconsideration of postwar art in other American regions as well.n PalmSprings 2012 | 9

Art elevates the human spirit in a way that nothing else does. It changes people’s lives, one experience at a time. Not really a product, it’s an emotional experience. Gallery Sam offers quality examples by important American, European, Asian and indigenous artists from the mid-20th century to the present, and our diverse inventory includes more than 800 paintings and sculptures. We showcase many legendary figures of the art world as well as more contemporary artists whose beautiful and emotionally expressive works bring joy and meaning into the lives of discerning collectors worldwide. Although most of our paintings are by well-known artists, we also seek out artists who are overlooked, undervalued and haven’t achieved the celebrity of some of their contemporaries but who nevertheless have painted superior works. The gallery has placed works of art in major public, private, and corporate collections. Our extensive knowledge of the art world spans a wide range of artists and media, allowing us to offer art advisory and curatorial services to all levels of private and corporate collections.
