DEDICATED TO: My family and friends. This semester has presented many challenges, and I wouldn’t have been able to make it out alive (and sane) without the help of those closest to me. p.s. I’ll be using some colorful language and making many snarky comments throughout this book. You have been warned.

SEMESTER GOALS

SEMESTER MOTTO

I had several semester goals: • Maintain straight A’s (at least try to) • Get some sleep (like four hours) • Have a social life (debatable) • Develop illustration style (CHIBI) • Practice book design (we love type)

My semester motto is always “Anything worth doing is worth doing right.” No matter how stressed or tired I get, I must always put my best foot forward. By doing good work, I can become both a better student and designer.

PROJECT BACKGROUND PROJECT 3: THESIS PRESENTATION TIMELINE: 1.21–2.25 OUTCOMES: RESEARCH PRESENTATION Okay, close your eyes. Or maybe not because you’ll need to read this. Let’s start over... Pretend it’s your last semester of BFA (or whatever graphic design program you’re in). You’re probably a senior, and you’ve been tasked with the all-important THESIS. *insert sparkling noises* You’re told to read an article about planning the perfect thesis, but let’s be honest, you’ll skim it at best. Now your mind is swirling with ideas about what you should spend your final days of college working on. You start looking into designers who inspire you and asking grand questions about what design means to you. Then you put it all down on paper... or on Google Slides...or on InDesign. The last step is to present your proposal to your peers. You’ve got five minutes. Good luck.

RESEARCH LOGIC MODEL THE SOURCES:

THE OUTCOMES:

Unofficial Resources: • Psychology Background • Psychologists Poster

Project Outcomes: • Thesis topic: Redefining Psychology • Thesis research presentation • Minimal poster on psychology term • Mock-up of spread from booklet

Tangible Resources: • Lilienfeld paper on Misused Psychology Terms • Notes from Social Psychology • University of the District of Columbia article on Importance of Psychology in Society

THE IMPACTS:

Designers: • Lorena Lane • Patrick Smith • Studio Carreras

Expected Growth: • Better understanding of thesis requirements • Consideration for purpose of a project • Practice with “public” speaking • Desire to pursue more personal projects

THE ACTIVITIES:

Miscellaneous: • A little less sleep (not bad though) • Mild stress from needing to present

For the Project: • Compile research into presentation • Settle on thesis statement and direction • Sketch out potential poster ideas • Create mock-up for spread • Rehearse presentation a few times Unhelpful (but unavoidable) Activities: • Procrastination by doing anything BUT working on your presentation and design • Read old psychology notes to see how much you actually remember (not a lot oops) • Reminisce about the days when you thought that sleeping at 1 am was late

INSPIRATION THE CONCEPT: As a Psychology and Graphic Design major, I’m in a unique position where I have a certain level of expertise in both subjects. Thus, I can use my creative side to make these difficult concepts easier to understand for the general public. By simplifying complex phenomena into minimal icons, we can foster conversations about these topics in layman’s terms. I also hope show my peers and viewers the power of psychology in society.

PROJECT GOALS

I enjoyed getting to explore a potential thesis topic, and I love having the ability to blend my two majors together in a meaningful way. I will personally work on this project over the summer and continue to practice this type of minimal design.

My goal for this research project was to “Find a way to show people the power of psychology,” which is why I titled the thesis presentation: Redefining Psychology. I also wanted to practice minimal and typographic design.

DESIGN HISTORY

设 计 历 史

PROJECT BACKGROUND PROJECT 4: DESIGN HISTORY TIMELINE: 1.21–4.27 OUTCOMES: JOURNAL REFLECTION, NEW ARTIFACT Think of an embarrassing story. The more cringe-worthy the better. I can’t tell you how many nights I’ve been kept awake by some embarrassing event that happened in middle school, but I digress. Got your story? Good. The important part comes next...What did you learn? I hope you learned something good because that’s what any story from the past (aka history) should do. Now let me say something else. Design informs design, which sounds redundant but I can promise is true. But let’s put this concept into practice for shits and giggles. Pick some design movement, like the Age of Posters or Psychedelic Design, and research a designer from that era. Now, take that piece of history and make something new. Redefine it. Breathe new life into it. You’ll get a feel for what it means to have design inform design, and I can promise you that you’ll get something cool out of it.

RESEARCH LOGIC MODEL THE SOURCES:

THE OUTCOMES:

Artists: • Toulouse-Lautrec • Katsushika Hokusai

Project Outcomes: • Journal reflection on Art Nouveau & Ukiyo-e • Manga oneshot on Moulin Rouge • Physical copy of oneshot

Tangible Resources: • Articles on Ukiyo-e (Japanese woodblock printing) & its influence on Art Nouveau • Manga Collection

THE IMPACTS:

Toulouse-Lautrec Pieces: • Moulin Rouge • Confetti • Troupe de Mlle Eglantine • L’Anglais au Moulin Rouge

Expected Growth: • Appreciation for Asian influences on Western art & design movements • Practice with “public” speaking • Understanding for Lautrec’s style of illustration • Practice with storytelling

THE ACTIVITIES:

Miscellaneous: • Stress from needing to create three spreads of manga in completely new style • Joy from creating a manga

For the Project: • Draw connection between Ukiyo-e & Art Nouveau designer Toulouse-Lautrec • Compile research in journal reflection • Create manga oneshot about La Goulue and Valentin at the Moulin Rouge • Print and bind manga Unhelpful (but unavoidable) Activities: • Procrastination yet again by doing anything BUT drawing the manga • Lose lots and lots and lots of sleep • Read manga and justify that choice with “It will help inform how I draw this oneshot”

French, so I jumped at the opportunity to use that knowledge in my design work. As an avid manga reader and collector, I’ve also always wanted a reason to create my own manga or oneshot. For

this oneshot, however, I wanted to honor Lautrec’s style of illustration and create an “Art Nouveau” manga. The figures are pulled directly from Lautrec’s posters, save for the final spread, but

aspects of manga art are scattered throughout the piece through shading and texture. You also have to read from right to left (as you would with traditional manga). Lastly, there are bits of French in the manga.

PROJECT GOALS

I thoroughly enjoyed being able to illustrate and write a manga oneshot about the Moulin Rouge. I have a pretty large manga collection, so it was fun to get to make my own. I also liked being able to practice my French again.

My primary goal was to “Shed light on the many Asian, specifically Japanese, influences on Western art & design movements that have long been ignored.” I think I was able to successfully blend the two styles together.

100 DAYS

一 百 天

PROJECT BACKGROUND PROJECT 1: 100 DAYS TIMELINE: 1.21–4.30 OUTCOMES: 100 POSTS, FINAL PRESENTATION Want to destroy your will to live? Okay that was a little extreme. Hmm...Want to suffer productively? Yes? No? I’m taking this silence as a yes. Let me introduce *insert drum roll* 100 DAYS!!! From now until the end of time, you will make something (literally anything you want) every day. Let me elaborate. Pick an activity to repeat once a day for 100 days. I can promise you it’ll be worth it. Naturally there will be days where unaliving yourself sounds particularly enticing, or you’ll look at your work and only one word will come to mind: Shit. But you’ll hit a runner’s high sometime over the course of the project. You’ll get better, feel enlightened or just stop caring about whether it’s “good” or not. It’s time to just create and maybe have fun.

RESEARCH LOGIC MODEL THE SOURCES:

THE OUTCOMES:

Anime Studios: • Lerche • Kyoto Animation • Bones • Production I.G • CloverWorks • Madhouse • Pierrot

Project Outcomes: • 100 posts on Instagram • Handbound lookbook • Online sticker shop for anime eyes

THE IMPACTS:

Some Favorite Anime: • Haikyu!! • Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun • Jujutsu Kaisen • Demon Slayer

Expected Growth: • Better understanding of eye anatomy • Ability to create original eyes • Improved skill in Procreate • Appreciation for a daily action • Grow social media

THE ACTIVITIES:

Miscellaneous: • So much stress it feels like your hair might turn white or you might pass out at any moment • No sleep. Your eyebags will be intense • Joy from the act of creating • Some moneys if people buy your stickers • Actually injure finger while binding final book because it was 100+ pages ;-;

For the Project: • Complete a drawing every day • But try to work ahead by staying a few days ahead so you don’t get overwhelmed • Compile all drawings into a final book as well as on your website & store • Bind final lookbook • Turn drawings into stickers Unhelpful (but unavoidable) Activities: • Watch anime all the time instead of working • Cry about how much your wrists hurt • Questions life and your art • Fangirl over Gojo Satoru’s eyes

INITIAL RESEARCH | SPRING 2021 | PENG | 29

THE CONCEPT: At the start of the planning process, I had two ideas: Anime eyes and Foodimals, the animals from Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2. Both involved heavy illustration, but I

ended up choosing anime eyes because I realized I, for the life of me, could not draw eyes. And what better way to learn than to draw 100 eyes from some of the best animation studios in the world? This project became a huge source of joy and stress

for me as the semester continued. I loved getting to watch anime as a part of my homework, but I also chose an activity that required a couple hours to complete, rather than the recommended 20-40 minutes. Nevertheless, I saw my illustration

skills steadily improve. I got faster and more accurate with every eye, and I developed a good workflow that I continue to use in my other illustrations. I also achieved my goal of using my newfound knowledge to create original eyes.

PROJECT GOALS

The sheer number of eyes I now have under my belt is truly astonishing. It’s crazy to think we practically drew for 100 days straight, and being able to look at all that work together is satisfying AF. I also got to grow my social media.

My project goal was to become better at illustrating eyes and gain a better understanding of anime eye “anatomy.” I also had a secondary goal of learning how to use my Cricut by making stickers. I accomplished both goals.

PROJECT BACKGROUND PROJECT 2: INDEPENDENT PROJECT TIMELINE: 2.02–4.30 OUTCOMES: 10 PIECES, 500 WORD STATEMENT How ya feeling? Creative juices running on an all-time low? Need a booster? I gotchu. Now take a guess. If you’ve been reading, you probably got it right... It’s ANIME! Just kidding. It’s another project. This time, however, you’ve got complete control. You don’t have to imagine yourself as a senior or think of an embarrassing story. Your only requirement is to make 10 pieces of anything. 10 posters. 10 animations. 10 books. Whatever. The world is your goddamn oyster, and it’s one of those fresh oysters from Australia. I’ll put you on the right track though. Identify your current design aesthetic and maybe a couple weaknesses. You should also think about something you’ve always wanted to experiment with. Now, go crazy.

RESEARCH LOGIC MODEL THE SOURCES:

THE OUTCOMES:

Unofficial Resources: • My memories from my childhood • My parents • My gamer friends • My “creative” brain • Manga & Webnovel knowledge of games

Project Outcomes: • Five Original Characters • Backstories & game plot for each character • Five animations (one per character) • Printable posters and postcards • Stickers for each character • Player roles & illustrations • Five collectibles (one per character) • Printed & handbound character manual • Peng Dynasty Website • Peng Dynasty Website: Chinese version

Tangible Resources: • Journey to the West novel • A Chinese Odyssey movies • Old stories about yaoguai • Character design manuals • Game design manuals • Coding manuals & how-to’s

THE ACTIVITIES: For the Project: • Illustrate each original character with their accompanying collectible • Write stories for each of the characters • Create animations for website • Learn coding for website • Create character manual to be printed & bound • Set up store & different products

THE IMPACTS: Expected Growth: • Ability to create original art • Development of illustration style • Exploration of Chinese folklore & storytelling • Practice with coding & web design Miscellaneous: • Stress from trying to create characters • Joy from learning new skills

Unhelpful (but unavoidable) Activities: • As always, heavy procrastination • Make random drawings for fun • Fry brain trying to learn code in a month • Read webnovels instead of working

MOODBOARD

THE CONCEPT: For this project, I wanted to develop my own illustration style and finally 46 | PENG | SPRING 2021 | INSPIRATION & IDEATION

create some original work. Additionally, this project became a way for me to connect more with my childhood. I was told these stories growing up,

and it was a fun way to learn more about Chinese culture. America also doesn’t really have these kinds of stories about yaoguai or the interaction

between the “heavens” and mortals, so I was excited to use my art and design to inform others about the richness of Chinese folklore & culture.

DESIGN PROCESS

STEP 1

STEP 2

STEP 3

STEP 4

The first step in the process (after sketching) is creating the line art of each character. I stuck with a solid black line in a soft crayon texture so it would look more cartoonesque. I also turned off the pressure control so that the line weight would be consistent throughout.

The second step is adding flat colors. I used a specialized crayon brush for this layer. Each character also had six colors specifically assigned to them. Color was added in layers and started from the skin (or fur) and ended with accessories & clothing.

The third step in illustrating these characters is adding highlights, shadows, texture and details. I also got to experiment with pattern making. This part is absolutely crucial because it really brings the characters to life. It also usually takes the most time to complete.

The final step is adding the calligraphy, background, seal and paper texture. This step also shows the final character posters for each yaoguai. The background color uses a color pulled from the character’s eyes, and the seal uses a color featured in the character’s outfit.

CHARACTER SKETCHES

ZHU BAJIE

BAI SUZHEN

Zhu Bajie was actually the first character I sketched but the second character I began rendering. His original design in Journey to the West was absolutely hideous, so I wanted to make his character design a lot cuter and more lovable. I hadn’t started using the symmetry tool in Procreate at this point and was just copying and pasting each half as I finished.

Bai Suzhen was the third character I rendered in Procreate. I started using the symmetry tool to make her face, but I wanted to make her outfit “unique” so didn’t use symmetry tool there. My sketches at this point are still very messy because I’m unsure of the style and proportions for each character. Her Chinese dress—hanfu—also heavily references my own.

48 | PENG | SPRING 2021 | INSPIRATION & IDEATION

HULI JING

BAIGUJING

Huli Jing was the fourth character I rendered, and I actually created two outfits for her. At this point, I fully embraced using the symmetry tool to make my life easier. I also solidified the character proportions, so her sketch was much cleaner than the previous ones. From the start, her character design was one of my favorites because of how cute her fox features are.

Baigujing was the final character I conceptualized, which is fitting because she is the antagonist in the game. Her sketch was surprisingly clean, and it may have been because I was sure of how I wanted to her look. But her design is my least favorite. If I were to revisit her design, I would immediately change the eyes and most of her facial features. INSPIRATION & IDEATION | SPRING 2021 | PENG | 49
