REDESIGN

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: PROJECT 2: REDESIGN TIMELINE: 8.27–10.15 PRODUCT: DIGITAL MOCK-UP Imagine you’re at the supermarket getting your weekly groceries. You’re getting fresh produce, a pack of chicken and maybe even some frozen food or ramen. As you’re walking down the aisle, a package catches your eye, but for all the wrong reasons. It’s horrible, and it’s an eyesore. If that package doesn’t get out of your sight right this instant, you might just throw up. Luckily for you, however, you’re a designer, and reinventing this package with a superior design is a piece of cake. The only question is how good will it be.

THE CONCEPT: DESIGN GOAL: TO CREATE A VISUALLY APPEALING PACKAGE WITH CULTURAL SIGNIFICANCE

Heidi Peng | Final Pieces | 8

I ended up choosing to redesign the to-go sushi boxes at Kroger made by Hissho Sushi, and I identified several issues, namely the lack of functionality, to address. I designed a more

minimal package that helped to elevate the regular to-go sushi boxes. I also wanted the design to tie back to traditional aspects of Japanese culture, which is why I included the torii gate and

omamori graphic elements. The tagline is also a play on words, as “Hissho” means “for certain victory” in Japanese. Lastly, red makes you hungry and is also a traditional Japanese color.

SUBSCRIPTION BOX

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: PROJECT 4: SUBSCRIPTION BOX TIMELINE: 9.29–12.03 PARTNER: MIREYA MELERO PRODUCT: DIGITAL STYLE GUIDE It’s 2020, one of the worst years ever. There’s a pandemic, you can’t see your friends or go out, and you’re on your computer 24/7 for classes. Then you remember one of your friends raving about a subscription box they started receiving right when the stay-at-home orders came out. You’re thoroughly intrigued and start browsing all the popular services; however, you’re not just a consumer. You’re also a creator, and it’s up to you to bring the surprise to your own doorstep.

THE CONCEPT: DESIGN GOAL: TO DESIGN A THOROUGH AND ENGAGING STYLE GUIDE FOR PRESSED ON* *The concept for Pressed On. was pitched by our marketing team counterpart. The initial research and planning was their contribution.

Heidi Peng | Final Pieces | 16

We wanted to create a style guide that could essentially speak for the brand on its own; thus, we took inspiration from Mailchimp’s style guide on how to discuss brand tone, typography and color. Our style guide also covers topics like social media engagement.

In regards to our design, we wanted to communicate “minimalist luxury.” Our graphic elements rely heavily on geometric shapes, and our color palette stems from skin tones and dusty pastels. Our chosen typefaces are also simple while still evoking a sense of elegance.

TAROT

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: PROJECT 1: TAROT TIMELINE: 8.27–12.15 PRODUCTS: TAROT SET, GUIDE BOOK, BOX, WEBSITE Ever wish you could predict your own future? Maybe there are a couple of questions you need answered before you start pursuing a new relationship or career choice. You start to study tarot reading and realize there are hundreds, if not thousands, of variations of tarot decks. None of them, however, catch your eye. Thus, you decide to design your own tarot set with just the major arcana, and you soon realize there’s more to designing tarot than meets the eye.

THE CONCEPT: DESIGN GOALS: TO DEVELOP MY OWN ILLUSTRATION AND CHIBI STYLE*; TO LEARN PROCREATE *All cards were illustrated using Studio Ghibli scenes and characters as reference images.

Heidi Peng | Final Pieces | 28

I chose to create illustration heavy tarot cards because I am not the best illustrator, and I’ve always loved looking at fan art for anime characters. I’ve also never developed my own art style, so I felt that choosing to do illustration would push me to

improve and/or learn this skill. Moreover, I’ve had Procreate for a few years now but never got around to seriously learning how to use it; thus, this project enabled me to kill two birds with one stone. Regarding my tarot theme, I chose to make Studio

Ghibli inspired cards because of the lush environments that they create in each of their movies, and I wanted to create an entire world for my tarot cards to live in. Lastly, I incorporated a pencil and watercolor texture to pay homage to Ghibli’s art style.

PROCESS BOOK

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: PROJECT 5: PROCESS BOOK TIMELINE: 11.10–12.17 PRODUCT: PROCESS BOOK The semester has finally come to an end, and it’s time to apply for internships and scholarships. After months of hard work, you finally have some pieces worthy of your final portfolio, but now you have the task of finding a way to present all your work in an engaging and aesthetic way. You ask yourself what you want your viewers to think as they flip through your book. You ask yourself how you can put your best foot forward with this piece, and once you decide on a design direction, you open InDesign and get to work.

THE CONCEPT: DESIGN GOAL: TO COMPILE ALL MY WORK IN A CHARMING BOOK I’ve designed quite a few portfolio pieces and process books during my time at IU, but this time around, I wanted to show my personality throughout the piece. I also knew I wanted to keep the general layout simple while emphasizing the overall process and growth during each project. I particularly like the Project Notes/Wrap-Up spreads because they help tell my story in a visual and fun way.
