How To Observe 1. Think about and decide what environment or context you’d like to spend time observing 2. Take a notebook, pen, and a simple note taking framework of AEIOU Activities Environment Interactions Objects Users 3. Find a place to sit and observe without being in the way. Don’t hide, but don’t impede. Let the people know you’re there to learn, not to evaluate.


To Observe (cont’) 4. As you observe the action, note what grabs your attention and what raises question in your mind 5. Sketch out the environment. Make a list of things for a specific category. Count things. Annotate it with reflective notes. 6. Take pictures and record video. Watch the video and pin up pictures. In reviewing, you‘ll often see things you didn’t notice the first time.

Connecting observations to opportunities & idea starters

You’ve spent time with users, seeing what they do, where they do it, and how they do it. Now connect those observations to ideation through a simple narrative structure.


Worksheet 14 Problem Statements (20 mins) Take what you’ve seen and heard from users to reframe your project challenge in human terms. This helps provide a fresh, user-centric perspective.

3-Part Observations 1. Write down one statement of what you saw that you think matters 2. Add a reflective comment that questions, establishes irony, a problem, etc. 3. Finish with one or more considerations.

1. Teachers routinely expressed their inability to work with each other because of time‌ 2. Yet, each of them had free periods during the day.. 3. Consider ways of making schedules that give teachers overlapping free time, especially those of the same subject area.

1. Construction sites are always active in a city‌ 2. But it is hard to tell if they are fixing something or investing in making the city better.. 3. Consider ways of communicating the value of the project in interesting ways to those going by.

The power of “Ways of…” Consider ways of making schedules that give teachers overlapping free time. Consider ways of communicating the value of the project in interesting ways to those going by.
