Kenya’s Architectural development has been nothing short of magnificent over the past century. It can be summed up in a seed, to bud, to flower kind of analogy. The genesis of our architectural heritage is characterized in traditional African architecture. This was dominated by simple shapes such as the circle and crowned by conical roofs which had a symbolic reference of pointing to the heavens. During the colonial years, there was a major influx of foreign architectural styles which transformed the outlook of our built environment. This set the basis for most architectural schools in the East African Region whose courses glorified these styles. Kenyan Architects have continued discovering themselves and carve a niche as they seek to achieve the ultimate dream of designing an iconic building that would transcend generations. We are indeed at the flowering stage of our growth; an energetic, vibrant and sublime design atmosphere has definitely engulfed our profession. This exhibition celebrates the milestone of our Country’s Golden Jubilee, 50 years since gaining independence. It is a showcase of iconic buildings which have left a positive mark in Kenya’s built environment. We hope it will generate lots of interest and inspire those who have a chance of viewing it. Welcome!

The latest South African Census 2011 data shows that over the last decade over 2.1 million people have moved to Gauteng, South Africa’s smallest province, which now contains 22.4% of South Africa’s total population. At the centre of Gauteng is Greater Johannesburg a megalopolis that spans the cities of Johannesburg, Ekurhuleni and Mogale City with a population over 12 million people. Greater Johannesburg is the economic powerhouse of Sub-Saharan Africa and one of the 50 largest urban agglomerations in the world. It houses the South African Constitutional Court, the majority of South Africa’s gold and diamond trade, and supports a vibrant manufacturing and retail sector. Based in the heart of the City of Johannesburg, in the Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture (FADA) at the University of Johannesburg (UJ) (www.uj.ac.za/fada) is the DSD CoP. We meet monthly to interrogate research, projects, methods and products that impact on the intersection and interplay between design, society and development in our specific context. Design refers to the conscious choices we make in creating systems (community, society & productive systems) and technologies (products, artefacts, communicative technologies, systems integration); society the human context that includes the broader social systems of culture, economy, politics and environment; and development the discourse and practice of positive and considered change. We draw on critical political economy, social sciences, appropriate technology development, participatory and human-centred design, and other design approaches in our practice and research. Our members include students, academics and professionals from the disciplines of Industrial Design, Multimedia, Development Studies, Architecture, Fashion Design, Graphic Design, Visual Art, Interior Design and Economics. Each year DSD hosts a public seminar at FADA in order to strengthen opportunities of transdisciplinary collaboration and networking. Stand No: Fax:

This lightweight, highly durable metal has an exceptional strength-to-weight ratio, offering architects major cantilevers and open span structures. Readily formable, bent, sawed, drilled, polished, pressed and extruded, it also provides design flexibility, allowing for alterations and additions. We know the energy efficiency of a building is crucial in its design to minimize environmental impact. Renowned for its thermal properties, aluminium’s high reflectivity prevents heat loss and the low emissivity greatly reduces heat gain. Subsequently, it requires only 5% of the electricity conversion when recycled. The green metal is non-combustible and non-flammable. In the event of fire, the low melting point allows the fire to vent, releasing the heat into the atmosphere instead of spreading it throughout the building, thus saving the rest of the structural members. The economic advantages of aluminium with its unlimited lifespan of aesthetic appearance and durability far outweigh those of other metals, offering architects, builders, building owners and tenants significant benefits. Reflecting greater benefits, values and concerns, Hulamin further assesses the microenvironmental conditions to best advise uses, suitability, locations, paint technologies and best practices by considering performance requirements and cost. Quality control is an important integral part of our business, extending into every facet. Creating an augmented reality for best possible results, we ensure that our service and product offerings exceed our customer’s performance criteria. Think future, think aluminium – think Hulamin.

As with any twenty-year old standing on precipice of increasing freedom and responsibility, it is important to take stock of who we are, what's important to us and our future, and how we want to proceed in our development. In WRIGHT LEAD, a community-based youth leadership institute, high school youth explore this idea as they learn leadership skills and consider how to become change agents within their communities. This exhibit provides a lens for youth and promotes a sense of agency as they transition from "photographer" to "engaged citizen." It stimulates the viewer to consider our role in shaping our collective future.

anton@isoboard.com www.isoboard.com IsoBoard is a rigid, high density, extruded polystyrene thermal insulation board, which has a one hundred percent closed cell structure, giving it a range of properties very different from common expanded polystyrene. Having been tried & tested since 1970 throughout the world and manufactured in the South African market for nearly two decades, this international product contains a substantial amount of properties that are unique. It has a high resistance to water vapour diffusion, water absorption, and to Heat Flow and has a high compressive strength. IsoBoard contains self-extinguishing fire retardants, non-flammable blowing gasses and will not propagate fire in exposed roof applications. It is odourless, chemically inert and does not supply nutrition for pests, or support micro-organism growth. As a result of all these characteristics, as well as many other benefits, IsoBoard has an almost indefinite life-span if installed correctly. It can be used as a ceiling, to insulate older buildings at foundation level, retrofit to flat roofs, applied between or over rafters, trusses and over-purlin and installed in wall cavities. In fact, it can be used wherever aesthetically pleasing, efficient, water resistant, and cost-effective insulation material is required. IsoBoard applications are as wide as your imagination! IsoBoard‘s highly effective thermal insulation qualities are equalled only by our versatility in new construction and renovations to the building envelope. The inclusion of IsoBoard thermal insulation contributes significantly to predictable temperatures and human comfort, reducing the need for artificial temperature control. This means cost savings from reduced energy consumption and by implication lower carbon emissions. Monty Sack Stand No: info@montysack.co.za www.montysack.co.za The posthumous retrospective exhibition of Monty Sack’s architectural and fine art practice at the University of Johannesburg’s FADA Gallery, affords a unique educational and public engagement with one of Johannesburg’s foremost modernist architects. Typical of the modernist movement was the interrelationship of architecture, art, design and lifestyle; a sensibility overlooked today by much of the postmodern and derivative work that has followed since. Monty Sack’s architectural schemes integrated works by the likes of equally important modernist fine artist’s like Edoardo Villa and Cecil Skotnes. This particular approach to architectural aesthetics, urban design and public space coupled with the equivalent approaches in the likes of Skotnes and Villa for example, offers a way of unpacking South Africa’s historical contribution to the modernist movement globally. That the exhibition, through its curatorial approach will combine these numerous reflections, is welcomed by the Fine Art, Design and Architecture (FADA) Gallery at the University of Johannesburg and asserts the multi dimensional character of the exhibition. In parallel to the exhibition, the Architecture department at UJ has recently completed a seven-week design course on Monty Sack’s oeuvre, taking particular building projects into analysis and development, relative to the present climate of architectural practice in South Africa. The outcomes of this work (texts, drawings, plans, models and design interpretation) will be developed for the exhibition and thus add a particular student perspective and critique of Monty Sack’s work, relative to the archive of projects and fine art works on display. This retrospective exhibition thus represents a unique opportunity to support the on-going discourse around architecture, urban design and public space, in post apartheid South Africa, from an historical perspective and in terms of new awareness’s for learners and public on the impact of integrated design, and the importance of preservation and knowledge around pioneers of design such as Monty Sack.

Re-scripting Heritage Buildings in a Stand No: Transforming Johannesburg des@kznia.org.za www.kznia.org.za The refurbishment of historically significant buildings in Post-Apartheid South Africa has still largely remained limited to restoration and failed to transition spaces from being locked in a specific era with singular narratives. There is a reluctance to confront issues of racial and spatial segregation that shapes these buildings. The aim of both projects presented is to re-script the meanings of architectural interventions from expressing a single history to include ideas around spatial equity. These are explored through a layering process which in turn allows for a multiplicity of readings and interventions both current and historic.

ICC EXHIBITION INFORMATION Architectural Association of Kenya Stand No: 28 aak@aak.or.ke www.aak.or.ke Towards a Regional Identity A Rebirth of Kenyan Architecture: Kenya@50 Kenya’s Architectural development has been nothing short of magnificent over the past century. Welcome! Architects' Council of Europe Stand No: M01 – M12 Conseil des Architectes d’Europe info@ace-cae.eu www.ace-cae.eu The Architects’ Council of Europe (ACE) is the representative organisation for the architectural profession at European level: it aspires to speak with a single voice on its behalf in order to achieve its aims. This Exhibition will portray the essence of Nigerian life RESILENCE, SURVIVAL, EXCITEMENT. Nigerian Life displays a lot cultural pluralism. This is found in the dress and textile designs indigenous to the people. The intricacy and expressionism of indigenous textile in woven format is a medium of transmission in indigenous architecture.Technology and innovation are traceable in the early civilizations of the Nigerian people. This has survived several millennia and show a rich content in agnate and indigenous thought. Pottery and Bronze figurines hold a cognitive reflection of cultural expression within the boundaries of Nigeria. Urbanism has created a fusion of the essence of Nigerian life into a singular expression. This is seen every day on the streets of the cities. A glimmer of HOPE hovers in the distance as the Nigerian people look for an act of WILL to transform to win. Around every street corner lies a smile, a gift to a new day, an excited celebration for the gift of LIFE. This is the architecture of the lifestyle of the Nigerian People.

31
The three Northern European countries – Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania – are tiny enough to appear on the globe as dots. Our common exposition offers everyone an opportunity to connect the dots, to discover the contemporary architecture of the three countries through drawing. In addition adjacency, the three neighbouring countries are interconnected also by common history. The fifty years of forced-upon cooperation, called the Soviet Union, constructed our cities to look similar. The majority of the population in the three countries still lives in the monotonous sleeping districts of prefabricated apartment blocks. Societies that more than twenty years ago broke free from the Soviet command of collectivist planned economy set uniqueness as their ideal. Architecture of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania has had its own course during past two decades. The goal was something that had remained an impossible within the Soviet utopian modernism: that every building would have an architect who knows the context and would take an interest in the client’s wishes. The Estonian, Latvian and Lithuanian “dots” depict the modern architecture of the three countries. The samples of public space and building projects are grouped according to typology. Both the samples as well as the typologies offer insights into common objectives wherein each country is finding its own way forward. The samples are depicted as clouds of dots. The visitor can connect the dots and thus visualise the contemporary Nordic architecture in two ways: either by following the instructions or independently, discovering something new and envisioning the new worlds.

URBAN STRUGGLE IN TURKEY, REVEALING WITH THE GEZİ PROTESTS 2013 AS A ‘LITMUS TEST’ In 2013, the Taksim Gezi Park located in the center of Istanbul witnessed the most unique urban opposition movement in world history. The Gezi Movement, which started as an act of urban resistance and evolved into a national opposition, both revealed and triggered different resistance movements in urban and rural areas of Turkey. The exhibition of the Turkish Chamber of Architects designed for the UIA 2014 Durban Congress focuses on the attacks by global capitalism on urban spaces and architecture, the destruction of the public sphere, elimination of certain opportunities and rights brought about by modernism, and spatial interventions generated by the conservative atmosphere in the country starting at a regional level and spreading as far as the privacy of home, which were all made evident and brought to the public consciousness by the Gezi Movement. These issues construct the basis of the Chamber’s oppositionary stance and also the work it has carried out for years. What is the Gezi Movement that has become the litmus test for these issues? The Gezi Park, designed as part of French architect Henri Prost’s plan and the starting point of the Park no.2, is a green space of 70 year old trees which enables the surrounding congested urban structure to breathe. It has a strategic significance in terms of culture, society, urbanization and ecology. The project that presented itself as a reflection of the attitude of the one-party government ruling the country since 2002, and ignited the Gezi resistance evolved like this: The project aimed to, by using the ‘animation’ tactic, reconstruct the Ottoman military barracks (Topcu Kislasi) which were replaced by the Gezi Park while stripping the space of all its value and creating spaces in the city center to generate rental income. On 27 May 2013, the first day the authorities attempted to cut down the trees in Gezi Park, the police attacked a group of people guarding the park day and night from its destruction. From that day onwards, primarily the Taksim Solidarity and other groups who “occupied” Gezi Park guarded it constantly for 15 days, redesigning the park collectively through their occupation. The Taksim Solidarity of which the Chamber of Architects is a part and a representative, comprising of 128 organizations each having different attitudes, understandings and political backgrounds, frequently voiced its demands against an understanding that wants the project to continue without taking ethical, scientific, technical or legal values, and the public’s legitimate concerns into consideration. This public and urban opposition which started in Istanbul spread throughout Turkey; it was not restricted only to cities, but acted as the trigger for ecological struggles in rural Anatolia while also bringing the existing social movements to light and to the public consciousness.

For its “Architecture Otherwhere“ Congress in Durban, August 2014, the UIA has chosen to confirm the eco-friendly commitment of architects through three themes: resilience, ecology and values. Aware of the impact of the construction industry upon the economic, social and environmental crisis (40% resource consumption, 25% greenhouse effect gas production), the profession confirms its willingness to participate in the necessary change to the paradigm. The event will offer delegates from across the world, the opportunity to present solutions that have been tested and to exchange their know-how in order to quickly spread "good practices". The CIAF listened to the concerns of the African architects. Its response to the discourse ‘otherwhere and otherhow’ is displayed on a stand, in an exhibition, in conferences and in demonstrations, putting the spotlight on a ‘contextual’ architecture using mineral and fibre based ecomaterials. The designers of these buildings, inspired by the vernacular but without spurning the modern, consider the site, its inhabitants, its history and its raw materials. More and more French architects are going down this creative route. The CIAF highlights them in the exhibition ‘Matières en lumière’ (‘Spotlight on materials’), curated by Dominique Gauzin-Müller. CIALP - Conselho Internacional dos Stand No: 8 Arquitectos de Língua Portuguesa info@cialp.org www.cialp.org Modernism in the Portuguese speaking Countries - Architecture from the 40´s to the 60´s What is the origin of modern architecture in countries and territories that share a Lusophone heritage? We can start by Brazil, where the cultural construction of modern Brazilian architecture, partly due to architects such as Lucio Costa found inspiration on the former Portuguese colonial past. This inspiration combined with a certain pragmatism historically linked to the Portuguese tradition, would eventually become an architectural movement during the 1940’s to 1960’s, in countries and territories that are now part of the CIALP Committed in strengthening an autonomous cultural identity, Lucio Costa designed the original history of Brazil as a Lusophone country as opposed to its South American neighbours and the Anglo-Saxon colonization of the northern hemisphere, marking the difference between the culture of Brazilian architecture and international experiences. This is crucial in understanding the specificity of tropical architecture that emerged in Brazil and that, currently, is accepted as a prime source for modern architects who, between 1945 and 1975, worked in Portugal and in the former Portuguese colonial territories in Africa - Cape Verde, Guinea Bissau, Sao Tome and Principe, Angola and Mozambique - and Asia - India (Goa, Daman and Diu), Macau and Timor. In each of these places, the experience of modern architecture enabled the development of a progressive culture, common in features, increasingly autonomous and regional. Its progress can be compared to the development of a language, providing it a certain charm. An exhibition developed by CIALP (International Council of Portuguese Speaking Architects), an International organization of Architects that seeks cooperation and affirmation for architecture in the Portuguese Speaking Countries including Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, Guinea Bissau, Macau, Mozambique, Portugal, São Tomé and Príncipe and East Timor.

ICC EXHIBITION INFORMATION UIA Education Commission Stand No: 32 kschwen@clemson.edu www.uia-architectes.org Ecology and Values “Schools Otherwhere” The increased complexity of the role of the architect obliges UIA and its member sections to take into account the existence of complex and multi-facetted changes in the world, and the process of striving for continuous improvement in architectural education. The International Union of Architects, UIA, as the organisation that brings together the national professional institutes, has a direct interest in and responsibility for the quality of architectural education in the world. It should therefore have a broad framework, a clear position and a set of guidelines for best practice on architectural education. These, however, need not be over-prescriptive or restrictive and should acknowledge the local variations. This exhibition will include examples of student work from education programmes throughout the UIA’s member sections, illustrating the breadth and depth of study in contemporary architectural education, particularly regarding environmental/cultural responsibility. The Architectural Education Commission is a permanent UIA commission created originally as a reflection group in close liaison with the Bureau and Council. Its director or directors are designated by the UIA Council every three years, and its regional co-directors are designated by the Bureau. The commission is reinforced by regional committees that oversee and communicate problems or cultural sensibilities in their region. The Commission meets twice a year (fall and spring), in conjunction with the UNESCO-UIA Validation Council for Architectural Education.

ICC EXHIBITION INFORMATION Heritage region1 Stand No: J01-J15 Nina Nedelykov nina@nedelykov-moreira.com & Sara Van Rompaey sara. vanrompaey@skynet.be Sustainable EU Heritage EU Research on energy efficient historic buildings and districts UIA WP Heritage region 1 presents two EU flagship Research projects on Energy efficiency in historic buildings and districts funded by the European Commission under its Seventh Framework Programme: The project 3ENCULT bridges the gap between conservation of historic buildings and climate protection, which is not an antagonism at all: historic buildings will only survive if maintained as living space. Energy efficient retrofit is useful for structural protection as well as for comfort reasons - comfort for users and “comfort” for heritage collections. 3ENCULT will demonstrate the feasibility of “Factor 4” to “Factor 10” reduction in energy demand, depending on the case and the heritage value. The research activities in the project are accompanied and stimulated by the involvement of eight case studies. At the same time, the different case studies will allow the assessment of the developed solutions. From here an analysis will be conducted to generalize the found solutions, identify replicable factors and the context where replication is possible. EFFESUS is a research project investigating the energy efficiency of European historic urban districts and developing technologies and systems for its improvement. The term “historic urban district” in the context of EFFESUS, is defined as a significant grouping of “old” buildings built before 1945 and representative of the period of their construction or history, not necessarily protected by heritage legislation. The overall objective of EFFESUS is to develop and demonstrate, through seven case studies, a methodology and criteria for selecting and prioritising energy efficiency interventions, based on existing and new, cost-effective technologies and systems compatible with heritage values, to achieve significant lifecycle energy efficiency improvements in the retrofitting of historic districts. EUROPA NOSTRA is the pan-European federation of heritage organisations which covers 50 countries in Europe and beyond. It is the voice of the civil society committed to the safeguard and promotion of Europe’s cultural and natural heritage. It was founded in 1963 and has offices in The Hague and Brussels. It is presided by Maestro Plácido Domingo. Europa Nostra’s main activities are: a) celebrating and promoting excellence in the heritage field through the prestigious EU Prize for Cultural Heritage/Europa Nostra Awards; b) campaigning to save Europe’s endangered heritage through the”7 Most Endangered” programme and c) organising Europe’s heritage lobby, among others through the “European Heritage Alliance 3.3”. and d) servicing a large network of heritage stakeholders, both private and public.

As a major exercise about modern architectural heritage in Lebanon, we have selected the theme of the "Rashid Karami International Fair" in Tripoli. Designed by architect Oscar Niemeyer in 1962, it is a one of the most magnificent sites, yet ignored and endangered. It occupies around one square kilometer of land in the heart of the Mediterranean city of Tripoli. Construction has been completed in 1975 at the time of the beginning of civil war, and since then, apart from minor partial usage, the fair never operated fully. Under the patronage of the Order of Engineers and Architects in Beirut and Tripoli, ten public and private architecture schools and faculties participate in this nation-wide brainstorming about the future of the fair. A selection of the best projects will be exhibited at the U.I.A. Congress in Durban, South Africa, within the International Expo - Lebanese Booth, No. 40.

ICC EXHIBITION INFORMATION National Union of Architects of Ukraine Stand No: 2 Arhitektor2@gmail.com Nsau.org Ecology KIEV OTHERWHERE Taking into consideration the specificity of the present South Africa UIA congress topic we would like to present our vision of wide range of “the mysterious” about such well-known, studied and prosperous places in Europe like Kiev, the capital of Ukraine. The key point in this case is the “genius loci” which dwells in not occasional places leaving not “by chance” results. Those places are also presented by such famous and well-known world capitals as the Saint Jerusalem, Eternal City of Rome, King-city of Constantinople and others. The city of Kiev is situated on the crossroad of Eurasian way from Europe to Asia and from North to South by river Dnieper/Borysthenius. The city under the name Azagarium was mentioned by Greek geographer and astrologist Claudius Ptolemeius in the 2nd AD century, and under the name Danparstad – in German tales in the 5th century, and was mentioned in Hazar chronicles in 7-9 centuries. Finally Kiev became “mother of Rus cities”, “metropolis”, city from which modern east-slavic statehood has developed. Conservation and transfer of local cultural memory embodied in spatial artifacts presents first of all an "ecological" problem and one of the main architectural aims, especially working with such cultural historical phenomenon as Kiev. That's why we have divided all historical visionary, urban and architecturalproject ideas about the two thousand years old city into three blocks: - Kiev we've never seen (ideas for the future City of Kiev); - Kiev that has gone (spatial-plastic symbols, that have survived in local historical memory); - Kiev that could have been (architectural competition and real projects, that haven't been realized due to various circumstances, but which contain interesting spatial ideas). This project includes graphical and architectural material about 2000 years of Kievan history, grouped topically and geographically. Buildings and constructions, plans and projects of city which can't be seen but still exist in its cultural memory.

ROMANIA (OAR) office@oar.org.ro www.oar.org.ro Resilience Urban Food Stories
Stand No:
12
Food is the most basic human need but it’s largely taken for granted in the Western world, because it’s available in plentiful supply and high variety. ‘Urban food stories’ takes a look at the food system through five initiatives dealing with the issues of producing, distributing and creating social awareness around locally grown, sustainable food. All of them are part of the same system, characteristic to Romania but slowly disappearing from the western world. The country’s food security is assured by small farms. Eco Ruralis is an initiative helping them maintain their way of life by providing traditional seeds and sustaining their cause through political action. In the Western world industrial farms provide food security, a concept pushing for the quantity of food, placing the business at the center of the system. However this system is at odds with the small farms, replacing them and crucially lowering food quality. At the World Food Summit in 1996 a new concept was created, "food sovereignty", to understand and maintain small local farming and local distribution. It puts the consumer and the producer before the interest of the market, maintaining the quality of food, keeping social cohesion and protecting the environment. The project investigates initiatives like the peasant’s box which works around the system, putting the consumer and the producer in direct contact, building besides food distribution, relationships that are resilient to economic and political changes. Similarly, temporary markets provide a place for the producer to sell directly to the consumer, impacting locally the economy of food. Through systems like these, communities like the ‘hostezens’ who used to provide most of the city's food can follow their traditions. The project also investigates the landscape of food, citizens growing their own produce creating places of interaction and cohesive communities.

SACAP has the recognised Voluntary Associations (VAs) as the stakeholders which conduct the facilitation of CPD points for the professionals. SPIRITUAL PLACES Stand No: 47 jus@pb.edu.pl www.sarp.org.pl Values Contemporary Architecture of Places of Worship and Collective Memory as an Anticipation of Places of Worship and Ecumenical Meeting. Today, when we witness common stratification of cultures and cults, when they are being set against each other, there is a great need for creating places of meeting and dialogue. These should be places free of aggression, conflicts and tensions, places free of proselytism, religious terror, fundamentalism and obscurantism. These should be places raised with respect for people’s identity, for their dissimilarity and diversity, with a sense of tolerance and love of one to another. At the exhibition there will be presented the most remarkable works of contemporary architecture of places of worship and collective memory, which are receptive to an ecumenical meeting with other religions. This will be an important, model display of ideological and methodological contribution of architecture of these places to the world cultural heritage, which was built with a full respect for diversity and dissimilarity. This will be a significant propagation of the idea of human communitarian living in multinational, multicultural and multireligious society structure based on tolerance and esteem among various nations, cultures and religions. This will be a promotion of the idea of dialogue and understanding, opposition to discrimination, supporting the idea of solidarity and social justice, the idea of building natural relationships among all the people regardless of race, religion, nationality, origin, social status, sex or age. The exhibition will prove there are spiritual places in the world where you can be in the space of a certain temple, which is heterogeneous with its forms and rich with content, but at the same time not divide by man. He will find his very own place in it where he can experience both personal and communitarian contact with God within his own religion as well as within another one. Architecture where such things take place is the evidence that separations haven’t reached the Heaven yet. Unity is the reality, which can be rediscovered again and again. But it should be worked out.

UIA 2020 candidate city: Melbourne Stand No: 60 daniela.crawley@architecture.com.au www.dialectsofplace.com.au Universal Challenges / Local Opportunities Dialects of Place Melbourne has a vital, confident and progressive architectural culture that in its hybrid diversity reflects the multi-culturalism of Australia. Dialects of Place focuses on celebrating and reinforcing the particular aspects of place in meeting universal challenges of settlement. Places we inhabit are the confluence of their specific ecology, geography, cultural and social inheritances, and economics. Rapid urbanisation, resource depletion and climate change are the issues of this century. Designing and achieving cities that are equitable, engaging, diverse, creative and humane is the responsibility of many and a unique challenge for architects and urbanists. How can buildings and landscapes effectively speak to their communities? Australia is an ancient continent with diverse and enticing landscapes and indigenous people and traditions from which much can be learnt. While vast and seemingly sparse in its settlement, it is also one of the most urbanised lands in the world. Successive waves of predominantly European and more recently Asian immigration have contributed to a contemporary multicultural community in transition from rural, to suburban, to urban densities. Its relatively mild climate, varied landscape and recent population growth has provided the impetus for an independent and fresh contemporary culture that is energetic and optimistic, and thus well placed to support creative ways of working and living, and new models of design for dealing with our future. Making, enriching and sustaining places that respond to the needs and stimulate the imaginations of our citizens, from all aspects of our multicultural and multidimensional communities is the real challenge of our era. This is no more evident than in emerging economies and places of growing populations – and in an increasingly digital world the sensual and tactile experience of the built environment is an essential foundation to life. Come and step into Melbourne at Stand 60. We look forward to welcoming you.

The UNESCO-UIA Charter on architectural education was elaborated by a group of ten experts designated jointly by the UIA and UNESCO. The text was ratified by the UIA general assembly in 1996. This fundamental document sets directives on architectural education to ensure that young architects are capable of meeting the professional and cultural challenges of the modern world. Updated regularly, it is complemented by the UNESCO-UIA validation system for architectural education, which aims to provide a UIA label of excellence in architectural education to those architectural study programmes that comply with a defined set of requirements. This exhibition will display the UNESCO-UIA Charter in 12 languages.
