We begin our new year back at the Arts Centre on Wed 1st Sept at 7:30 pm. All are welcome, but there is a charge of £5 for non- members, which if membership is taken up, is deducted from the membership fee. Finally, and without mentioning the dreaded c---d word, we will have ‘opened up’ from Mon 19th July but I for one will remain vigilant in every respect. It will be a long time before

we can use the phrase coined by the Stones, ‘It’s all over now’. As I draw this to a close, I wish everyone a good summer but ask you all still to take care.

ROTARY CLUB
Garstang & Over Wyre
After many months of hard work which started well before the Covid crisis, the Rotary Club of Garstang and Over Wyre was able to make significant donations to charities at home and overseas in June 2021.
Calvert Trust
Our Club was able to make a contribution of £1193.75 to support the Lake District Calvert Trust. This followed sponsored climbs by our members of Skiddaw and Blencathra. These funds were passed to the Rotary Club of Keswick who were coordinating a collection for the Calvert Trust from clubs in North Lancashire and Cumbria. Their target was £25,000 in support of a One Million pound deficit. The total raised by all Clubs was £32,000.
Nepal
A similar project was organised by Garstang Rotary Club. A total of £4,725 was raised by Rotary Clubs in our district in support of the emergency Covid appeal by the Rotary Club of Gorkha. We have been working with the Rotary Club of Gorkha (a major centre for many Gurkha soldiers) for many years on water supply projects. The Delta Variant of Covid has spread rapidly in rural Nepal triggered by the enforced return of poor migrant workers from India. Our funds are now with Rotary Club of Gorkha and are being used to provide medical

equipment and personal supplies for people in an isolation unit which they have set up to try and control the spread of the virus. These people have no access to vaccinations or oxygen. Some of the money will fund the purchase of oxygen concentrators.
Kenya
Since 2008 the Garstang Rotary Club has been promoting the building of sand dams (a man-made aquifer) in seasonably dry river beds. They provide clean water and improve the local water table during the dry season. Rotary Clubs in Great Britain and Ireland have funded the construction of 60 sand dams to date, along with major improvements in land utilisation and farming. In June, on behalf of clubs in Cumbria and Lancashire we donated £10,000 to a new sand dam project. For all our projects we deal directly with the local Rotary Club and a charity organisation, ASDL (Africa Sand Dams Ltd). We have agreed to support the Nzeluni Earth Dam SHG (self help group). There are three villages involved: 1,272 people locally, 1,522 in the sub-location and 6,280 in the location. Thirty three per cent earn less than £21 per month and a further 33% less than £35 per month - so below the current UN defined poverty line of £40. They already have an earth dam but it does not take them out of poverty. The creation of an aquifer by the sand dam and improved farming methods will help to ensure the reversal of desertification. The total budget for the project is £39,589. Rotary has agreed to fund half - £19,794. To achieve this it will be combining funds from four Rotary UK districts. The balance will come from non-Rotary benefactors.
