UN ASSOCIATION YOUTH PLATFORM

Call for Wyre Volunteers

As we enter the midsummer and cautiously start to return to a time that seemed so much more vibrant, it is easy to forget the troubles of our world, both at home and abroad, when we have all had to deal with a thousand tragedies, shared or personal, that disease and isolation have inflicted. Last October I was elected as generalsecretary for the United Nations Association UK - Youth Platform (UNA-YP). As the youth-wing of UNA-UK, the independent authority on the UN in our country, we have one goal: to empower, educate, and ensure representation for the young people of Britain at the international level. There are many ways that we do this. We coordinate the efforts of every University UN association in the UK and provide a forum upon which updates, issues and solutions can be raised, debated and voted into enaction. Secondly, we host a wide variety of events each month, ranging from guest speaker interviews to skills workshops, and galas. Our crowning achievement is our annual youth summit which brings ambassadors, diplomats, youth delegates and activists from across the globe together for a day to interact with our members. This year has seen us host speakers ranging from James Watt, ambassador to Egypt, Jordan, and Lebanon during the Arab Spring, to Richard Mills, deputy US ambassador to the UN. If you are a young person (15-24), there is no better way to explore and fast-track a future in international affairs or politics. Dearest to my heart, however, are our flagship projects: The United Nations and UNESCO Youth Delegate Programmes. Through this national campaign, we seek to achieve a historic mission: persuading local politicians

and the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office to approve the support and reinstatement of a youth delegation to the UN and UNESCO headquarters in New York and Paris. If we are successful, a handful of youths shall be afforded the opportunity to participate actively in high-level international meetings on behalf of the group of people perhaps left behind the most over these past two years: young people like themselves. These delegates would spend several weeks each year attending UN conferences and reporting their findings and inspirational stories back to schools across the UK. So where does Wyre fit into this? I have just graduated from university and have been lucky enough to discover the wonderful community of Garstang and the surrounding area. My parents moved here from the Fylde whilst I was gone! Here, more than anywhere else, clearly shines the spirit of humanitarianism – Garstang declared itself as the UK’s first Fairtrade town back in 2000. Whether it be through bonds of charity, of faith or caretaking for our natural landscape, there is a spirit across the Wyre that radiates the hopes of the UN Charter: a people committed to making their world a safer, cleaner, and more prosperous place for their children to live in. Wyre can be the springboard for a great reawakening of these ideals. But as we try to accomplish this, we need your grassroots support. As UNA-YP moves to form a local movement, we are looking for volunteers both young and established to aid us in our local campaigning activities. We are planning to hold a fundraiser for our delegate programme at Scorton Charity Teas on Sun 22nd Aug. How wonderful it would be to see you there and have help from members of our own community.
