PILLING LANE WI Our September meeting was a French Evening. We were transported to the Eifel Tower Café, Paris, where a number of ladies had dressed the part of French mademoiselles. We enjoyed games with a French theme. Anne and her helpers showed us how to produce beautiful French table lamps, a lovely souvenir of the night, and we ate at the Eifel Tower Café where Mademoiselle Carol and her bevvy of French Maids served a delightful ‘le souper Françoise’. I can certainly say that it was a lovely evening and enjoyed by all. The next meeting of Pilling Lane WI will be on Wed 6th Oct at 7:30pm at St Oswald’s Church Hall, when our speaker will be Lisa Moore who will give a talk on needle felting and show us some of her magnificent creations. The competition will be ‘Something I Have Made’ so this is a chance to show how Established over 14 years

OVER WYRE ART SOCIETY We welcomed five new members at the start of our autumn term, along with our regular art goers. We’re getting nearer to exhibiting work at Knott End Library during November which means looking through our paintings, maybe some finishing touches or improvements and thinking about framing. We enjoyed learning pen and wash with John Harrison, so now we look forward to Graham McQuade who will show us his watercolour painting skills later this month (see below). Linda got us thinking about how each side of the brain deals with drawing. We practised some examples to demonstrate this and then copied an upside down picture. Was this more accurate than the right way up? The answer is yes! Why? This is because our mind’s eye interprets the image so distracting us from the actual marks. October Programme • • • •

Before the war Jack was one of the original MUJAC (Manchester United Junior Athletics Club) members, the start of the youth club as we know it today. He was known as ‘Crasher White’ by how he could head the ball into the goal. Apparently he was a good player/goal scorer! However, war broke out and Jack’s engineering background resulted in him working in the engine room of a minesweeper. Sadly for him he continually suffered from sea sickness, earning him the nickname of the ‘Horizontal ERO’ (Engine Room Orderly). Gail White

With the heavenly scent of jam cooling and the second batch of gloriously purple damsons on the boil ready for our next pop up shop, our thoughts here at Matt’s Fund are definitely in autumn mode! The launch of the pop-up shop in September was well received and we’d like to thank everyone who dropped by. It was lovely to chat about everything and anything and especially raising awareness of our local facility and of course the work we are doing. From the feedback we received we now plan to hold themed pop-up shops more often and for longer hours so with that in mind our next event will be ‘Shades of Autumn’ at Catterall Village Hall, Fri 1st Oct, 11:00am - 6:00pm with a range of plants, produce, jams, new and pre-loved items, clothing, fancy dress, shoes, handbags and more to help celebrate

CRY (cont) the season and adorn your home this Autumn. Thanks to everyone who has donated goods towards this event and to the wayside stalls on Cock Robin, seasonal items are always very much appreciated. The ‘Everything £1’ sale in the main hall at Catterall was also successful, raising £389 towards screening. Thank you to all who donated, supported and helped. Following a Christmas pop up shop planned for mid-November our next event in the main room at Catterall Village Hall (not to be confused with Kirkland and Catterall Memorial Hall), will be a toy fair, so keep an eye out for our article in next month’s Focus, posters and updates on social media for dates and times. November also heralds our next free CRY heart screening event at Garstang Community Academy on 13th & 14th Nov. Appointments for Saturday should be available on-line at the end of September. To book an appointment go to www.testmyheart.org.uk and search for Garstang Community Academy. Please note: Sunday appointments will initially be reserved for academy pupils. Families should receive an invitation via school’s online parent mail. Talking of dates, the gorgeous Longridge Highland Cow calendars, featuring local bovine celebrities, Mandy McMoo and Arlo, are now available from our pop-up shops and events and Best Wishes in Garstang. In Longridge, you can pick one up at Meraki on Berry Lane, Old Station Café and Tap and Vent. At £10 they make fantastic presents with the full amount going to the two funds in memory of Andrew Key and Matt. We’ll let you know as more outlets become available. We are slowly leaving summer behind but every cloud has it’s silver lining. The autumn in our part of the globe gives us a spectacle of colours with local woods, fells and even tree lined roads all changing their different shades over the next month or so, and of course our jewel in the crown, the Lake District. The money raised is part one of our efforts which will be added to more fund raising planned for November. At least ten of us will attend our district international rally in early October which will be fundraising for Aquabox. See their website to discover more about their work. That day the district will also hand over at least 60 filled Rotary shoe boxes to be sent to overseas charities for distribution to those in need. SOROPTIMISTS Women Inspiring Action, Transforming Lives You can tell the confidence is starting to return to our wonderful region as we are now out and about enjoying activities and finally being together in person again. Fun and friendship are two of the bedrocks of our organisation. As we all know – if we are enjoying doing something, then it’s easier to do and is done better. 100 Mile Relay Challenge This leads us on to our 100-mile relay challenge to celebrate 100 years of Soroptimist International. The challenge will commemorate the positive advances in the lives of women and girls around the world achieved over the last 100

years. Our club completed a 100-mile relay. From 100 steps to 25 miles, our members walked, ran and cycled their way to our target. This was a truly inclusive way of ensuring all our members could take part as we have a wide range of ages and abilities! Gail took to her bikes, yes, she had quite a range which she mounted and whizzed round Garstang on - a Brompton, a Moulton mini, Sinclair C5 and a Raleigh Chopper! Check out the photos on our Facebook page which show some of our various efforts. Funds raised will support our chosen cause for 2021, AfriReuse - a community-based, not for profit, social enterprise, empowering girls in Kenya to have their periods safely. A donation of £10 can provide one girl with a dignified, practical solution to her menstrual health. Help us in supporting this important work – it’s not too late to sponsor us:

A Bit of Spit & Polish

The final result means that the detail of the mosaic can be revealed, notably the castle, the trees, the clouds and the bird. The photo of the coloured plaque gives some idea of the design of the mosaic.

September also gave us the opportunity to revisit the Millennium Mosaic which our club designed, built and donated to Garstang (behind the old council office carpark). It had become mossy and ingrained with debris, so a cleaning team was formed and sleeves rolled up and a successful cleaning operation completed. It helped that it was a dry day but

SOROPTIMISTS (cont) article – that is something we will have to hold over for our next piece – keep your fingers crossed for us. Meetings September also saw our first real meeting at the Garstang Golf Club. It was wonderful to be back there. Being in the same room during a meeting makes so much difference and perhaps why it was so late when we called it a day! We also welcomed two new members to this meeting (giving a total of five since the start of the pandemic lockdowns). Louise and Angela got stuck in at the mosaic cleaning, and Pamela certainly threw herself into club activities by hosting our September gathering at her home. A good night was had by all and it was a fantastic chance for everyone to reacquaint old friendships and get to know all our new members.

Mary’s Meals Regular readers will remember that we have a steady programme of support for the Mary’s Meals BackPack Project, which is currently on hold as the organisation can’t take delivery of any items at the moment. But we have also been strong supporters of the main Mary’s Meals charity which collects funds in order to provide hot meals for school children in areas where hunger can be a barrier to attending school. We were delighted to learn that the charity is now feeding an amazing two million children in school every single day. What an achievement. Well done Mary’s Meals. Tablet Blister Packs However, we were far from delighted to learn that the recycling company Terracycle will no longer collect blister packs for recycling from local pharmacies, they can only go to Superdrug Pharmacies and in very small

GARSTANG ROTARY CLUB IS FULLY OPEN FOR BUSINESS Last month we reported that the Rotary Club of Garstang and Over Wyre would commence face-toface meetings. Our first meeting was an enjoyable event with a speaker who provided an interesting presentation about the Garstang Millennium Green Project. This is principally a pleasant walk of approximately two miles in Garstang alongside the River Wyre. This is beautifully offset by the background of the rolling hills encompassing Nicky Nook, Bleasdale, Oakenclough and Waddecar. Our second and the last meeting in September was a business meeting where we discussed the important matter of charity fund which we require to provide the financial support for local and international activities and projects. At home this has included the sponsoring of national youth events such as the Duke of Edinburgh Award, Young Singer, Young Chef and Youth Speaks competitions. We have also supported local food banks in an effort to overcome some of the hardship caused by the covid epidemic. On the international scene severe deprivation has been caused by covid. Many poor countries such as Nepal and Kenya have been affected to which we have made significant donations. We recently reported on this in Focus Magazine. A major source of our club revenue has continued to be our 200+ Club which is

Not to be outdone our reserves have been equally impressive defeating local rivals Lytham Town and Thornton Cleveleys both by two goals to one away from home. Reserves also managed to score eight

BEN WALLACE MP Autumn is now well and truly upon us and I have to say, the nights are drawing in already! Every year I say it but I have even noticed that certain shops in the constituency have already put up their Christmas displays! Well, I hope you have enjoyed the summer, whatever that has meant for you. Obviously, many of us holidayed in this country this year and I do hope that has meant that we have been able to appreciate our own scenic and interesting islands. Perhaps this new-found appreciation will mean that people continue to support our tourist industry long after the effects of covid. Nationally, mainly because of the success of vaccination, we have gradually been able

to conduct everyday life in a more normal way. Stringent rules and regulations have mostly been replaced with advice, giving individuals the opportunity to manage the risk themselves. There are still many challenges ahead including increased numbers of cases, when the impact of the return to school and work is assessed. As we approach winter the government is determined to ensure the NHS does not come under unsustainable pressure. There are many ways to achieve this including vaccines, Test and Trace, supporting the NHS and social care, advising people and the international approach (helping to vaccinate the world and managing risks at the borders). Locally, winter is usually challenging for the NHS with winter flu adding to the normal workload. Remember that following basic

BEN WALLACE MP (cont) common-sense steps will not only reduce the spread of covid but could lessen the spread of seasonal illnesses. As always, to keep up to date with the latest advice please go to the government’s website. Many local businesses have felt the pinch during the pandemic and, while I am proud of the support given by the government, there is no doubt that the future could be challenging for some. I am sure many of us try to buy local when we can and this will be more important than ever going forward. I am aware that many businesses, if not all, have altered the way they work in response to the pandemic, with working from home becoming the norm in many sectors. I wonder how many businesses will continue to work in this way? I am keen to visit as many businesses as possible to help understand the changing pressures that these new working practices

have brought about and how, as your local MP, I can help provide support. I have been contacted by a number of residents in recent months about the difficulties they have experienced when contacting their GPs. I know that GPs are facing increased pressures as patients now seek advice in health concerns, after staying away during the pandemic. I also know that GPs must allow for social distancing in the practices and ensure that patients and staff are protected as far as possible. I have been in touch with several of our local GP practices and I know that they are very keen to provide the best possible service to patients and are changing their working practices in response. I have also been in touch with ministers to seek assurances about the support the government is making available to GPs. I am aware that GPs have been offered financial support to assist them at this time. Please be assured that I’m monitoring this situation and hope to visit GPs in the near future. I have previously mentioned that many of my constituents have experienced delays in the processing of their applications to renew their driving licences or apply for new ones. Do check when your licence is due to expire and consider making an early renewal application to avoid being affected by the processing delays. If you are experiencing delays with an application you have already made, please do contact me if you would like my help in escalating your case. The most effective way to contact me is by email with a brief description of the issues you wish to raise, along with your contact details (including home address). You can also ring my office or write to me.

CAT SMITH MP Hello everyone. This month, as well as doing my best to support constituents, visit schools and work places and take part in the business of parliament – I’m also running the London Marathon. It’s still feels a bit odd writing that statement as it wasn’t all that long ago that I struggled to run for a bus. I’ve spent the last six months pounding the streets of the constituency in preparation! I’ll admit there have been times when I wondered what an earth possessed me to agree to this folly – but then the charities I am raising money for are close to my heart. Now, more than ever, people are relying on food banks to feed themselves and their children. Without the food banks, kids would go hungry, and we know that when kids are

hungry they struggle to sleep and learn. It’s just not right that in this day and age there are working families who, despite having a job, still can’t afford to pay their rent, cover their bills and put food on the table. In the Over Wyre and Fleetwood area of the constituency we have a higher than average number of workers on low incomes - which is why we have a higher than average number of people needing benefit support to top up those low incomes. Indeed, this month some of those people who are on universal credit, will have their benefit cut by a £1000 a year, further pushing them into debt and despair. When I run the London Marathon I’ll be raising much-needed funds for both the food bank in Fleetwood and the Lancaster and Morecambe food bank run by the Trussell Trust. Between April 2020 and March 2021, the Trussell Trust network gave out 2.5 million emergency food parcels - a 33% rise on the

CAT SMITH MP (cont) previous year. This comes on top of year-onyear increases in need. A new survey by YouGov on behalf of the Trussell Trust has found that more than three quarters of people on universal credit (UC) are already struggling to keep up with bills and credit commitments and are going without food as a result. Shockingly nearly two million people on UC had at least one day in the previous month where they didn’t eat at all, or only had one meal, because they couldn’t afford to buy enough food. Removing this lifeline will have a devastating impact on people’s ability to meet their basic needs and to find and stay in employment. More than one million people say it will be ‘very likely’ that they will need to skip meals if universal credit is cut. 1.3m people say that it will be ‘very likely’ they will be unable to afford to heat their homes and 900,000 people say it would be very likely they wouldn’t have enough money to travel to work or to essential appointments on public transport if universal credit is cut. MPs from across the political spectrum have spoken out against the cut and we have joined over 90 charities that have come together to support the campaign. The Joseph Rowntree Foundation has said the cut would push a further 500,000 people below the poverty line. Citizens Advice said a survey of more than 2,000 claimants showed more than one-third (38%) would be in debt after paying just their essential bills if the cut goes ahead, describing it as ‘a hammer blow to millions of people’.

I welcome the news that vaccines for teenagers have been given the green light from the UK’s chief medical officers. The challenge for the government now is to get jabs out to 12 to 15 year-olds as quickly as possible to prevent further avoidable disruption to their education. Having spoken to local health professionals this week, they tell me they are very concerned about the coming winter and it’s important we vaccinate young people and offer booster jabs to others if we are to avoid our hospitals once again becoming overwhelmed. SSRA At our recent closed meeting we elected Jill Coleman as our new Chairman. We welcome Jill to her new office and thank her for taking on this role. We also welcome Terry Williams, Chairman of Stalmine with Staynall Parish Council. Terry will come to our meetings to liaise between the Parish Council and SSRA to work more closely together for Stalmine. Unfortunately, our Scarecrow event will not take place this year. However, we will hold the annual lantern making. This takes place at Stalmine School and is open to all Stalmine families and children. The last week in November is when the event usually takes place in preparation for the lantern parade to the church for the lights switch-on. We await the date of the Christmas tree lights switchon to confirm the date of the lantern making. Members of the SSRA committee attended the September Parish Council meeting where we discussed, at length, recent concerns

about raw sewage and resultant foul smell in Stalmine. Both the Parish Council and SSRA are contacting relevant agencies about it. We want full information and planned courses of remedial action. The date of our next meeting is Wed 6th Oct at 7:00pm at Wyre Villa function room. We thank Wyre Villa for allowing us to use their facilities and look forward to residents coming along to raise any concerns and/or ideas for Stalmine. WYRE COUNCIL Poulton YMCA Leisure Centre to Re-open Wyre Council and Fylde Coast YMCA are pleased to announce that Poulton Leisure Centre is set to re-open this month as part of the phased re-opening of leisure centres across Wyre. The centre has been playing a vital role in the community as a covid lateral flow test centre. However, following the successful re-opening of Thornton, Fleetwood and Garstang Leisure Centres, and the wider availability of lateral flow testing kits, Poulton is now able to open its doors to the gym, classes and the pool once again. Lateral flow test kits will still be available to pick up at Poulton YMCA reception for use at home. The site opened for swimming lessons in September. The gym and public swimming will be open from Sat 2nd Oct followed by fitness classes from Mon 4th Oct. Walking in Wyre Boosted by Garstang Walking Festival Wyre Council has relaunched its Great Outdoors programme of walks and activities which, in September, saw the return of the Garstang Walking Festival for the first time since 2019. Regular guided walks and outdoor activities are hosted by the council to encourage people to get outside, get active and explore the district. Garstang Walking Festival is a highlight of the calendar every year but had to take a break in 2020 due to the pandemic. Plans now continue for autumn and winter and Wyre’s Great Outdoors calendar has plenty of health walks and guided walks for you to take part in, all listed on Facebook and on the council’s website. If you would like to help co-ordinate future walking festivals or lead new walks for 2022 please get in touch with the council by email at countrysideservice@wyre.gov.uk You can find out about next year’s festival by following Garstang Walking Festival on

WYRE COUNCIL (cont) ukactive and Lancashire Mind to deliver a tailored and affordable workplace health offer to Lancashire-based SMEs. As a result of this 3-year programme, employees across the county will be empowered to take ownership and improve their own health and wellbeing, whilst businesses will benefit from a healthier, happier and more resilient workforce. In response to the increased levels of poor health within Lancashire’s workforce, the programme offers two main services to businesses in the form of the ESF-funded Workplace Health Champion Training and the government-backed Workplace Health Screenings service. The free training includes basic skills (Mathematics, English and ESOL) and a Level 2 and Level 3 NCFE-accredited qualification for those individuals who wish to drive change in their organisations and create a network of health ambassadors across the county. The screenings, focused

on employees aged 50+, combine a physical health assessment and mental health element to produce a unique tool for employees to learn more about their own health. The programme has undertaken a robust training and pilot phase over the last 12 months, where staff from leisure trusts and local authorities have undergone extensive training to deliver both the Workplace Health Champion Training and the Workplace Health Screening service. Businesses can learn more about the programme at www.activelancashire.org. uk Employers interested in participating in one or both of the services can also register on the website. CARTER’S CHARITY NEWS (cont) to name but a few. Great for pupils to have a go at something they wouldn’t normally do! Plans are being made for classes to get a hands on experience in learning; trips to Hoghton Tower and Bolton Museum are already in the planning; pupils get so much from visiting places such as these enriching their learning of topics and have long lasting memories for years to come. We are always proud of how well behaved and polite our children are, they are fabulous ambassadors for our school. We are also excited to be part of Young Voices for their 25th Anniversary – Yrs 5 and 6 will be heading to Manchester Arena in February 2022. until proven otherwise. I find such an antihumanity and anti-community idea totally abhorrent. We find strength in being close to one another not pushing people away to arms length or more. I was speaking with a Doctor friend of mine recently who expressed his frustration at what a missed opportunity the last 18 months have been. If all the resources and time used to instil fear and isolation in us, both of which suppress our immune system leaving us more vulnerable to illness, had been used to promote good health what a difference we could have made to ourselves and our communities. With my cynical (I get more cynical with each year that passes these days) head on I suggested that a healthy population is not a profitable one for certain sectors. So once again I shall drop in my own nuggets of good health advice for what they are worth!

Now is the time to begin taking 5000iu of Vitamin D every day. Beta glucans are useful too. For children use the wonderful sambucol syrup. It is a natural immune booster and can be used daily, they also do an adult version too. Echinacea is also excellent at creating an efficient immune system. Some take it when symptoms start, others use it as a preventative and take it every day. If you get any symptoms of a cold or other such virus then take 1000mg of vitamin C every hour for a day or two. Use zinc and/ or quercetin too. But do reassure yourself, the symptoms of a cold are cleansing signs so rest, stay hydrated and allow your body to do its job. Do not work when unwell, this is not bravery, it is asking for more serious illness to show up later. Rest must not be underestimated as a healing power, just watch what children do when unwell – they go to sleep.

Finally, reduce or remove your consumption of processed carbohydrates. That is breads, pasta, cereal, cakes, biscuits, sugars, fizzy drinks et al. They are vitality sapping and bring little nutritional value to us. Many are quite simply food poison except it takes 30 or 40 years to really see the effects of the poisoning with heart disease and arthritis which will then be blamed on your age rather than your diet. On arrival, we found a large mass on his side. We were unsure at that point if it was an infection or a cancerous mass so he was booked in for surgery to determine the best course of treatment. Following surgery, the mass was found to be a large branch of abscesses which we think was the result of a bite wound becoming infected and then left untreated. Teddy was left with a large wound following the procedure which required a drain to prevent a build up of fluid. He recovered well from the surgery however unfortunately the abscess reoccurred a few weeks later although this time much smaller so we were able to treat it ourselves by draining it regularly, flushing the wound and giving antibiotics. He really has been through it over the last few months however he is now doing much better and there has been no reoccurrence of the abscess. Teddy was extremely tolerant

RSPCA (cont) whilst receiving treatment but generally, he is an independent and strong willed rabbit who likes to do his own thing. He needs a rabbit savvy adopter who has plenty of experience with rabbits and knows how to read their body language. Teddy is looking for a female bunny who will provide him with much needed companionship. Diva & Beau: Bonded pair Diva and Beau are on are the lookout for a new home together with rabbit savvy adopters. Diva was rehomed from the centre in 2019 but has sadly been returned to us as her owner had a change in circumstances and couldn’t care for her anymore. In her previous home, Diva was successfully bonded with Beau so he has also come into the centre for rehoming. Diva

very much lives up to her name and has an independent and sassy nature so adopters will need to have a good understanding of rabbit body language and know how to read her. Beau however is much calmer and is the less dominant one in the relationship. They are both food orientated and enjoy treat time which is a good way to build up a bond with them. For information on rabbit accommodation and what is required for Teddy, Diva and Beau please contact the animal centre and a member of staff will be happy to help. No-one could be better equipped to guide us through 25,000 years of history in one evening than Nick Riley. ‘Born in Blackburn, Dr Riley is the UK’s leading authority on the geology of Bowland. In 2003, he was awarded an MBE for services to UK geoscience. More recently, he was awarded the John Phillips Medal by the Yorkshire Geological Society for his lifelong contributions to understanding the geology of Northern England.’ Traditionally held at Browsholme Hall, the Lord of Bowland Annual Lecture has built a

FOREST OF BOWLAND (cont) uses local, organic and sustainably grown botanicals to produce a limited number of their unique distillation, the fourth ‘Chapter’ in their range of gins, from Bowland’s Coronation Meadows. The wildflower-rich Coronation Meadows are located at Bell Sykes Farm in Slaidburn and they act as a living seedbank – one of the last unimproved flower-rich grasslands in this part of Lancashire. Peter Blackwell, the farmer at Bell Sykes Farm lets the grasses grow much longer before cutting and bailing, so that the seeds can develop and then be used to regenerate wildflower meadows elsewhere. During 2020, for every bottle of Hay Time gin sold, Goosnargh Gin donated £5 to Champion Bowland. Owners Richard and Rachel Trenchard were keen to support a project in the Forest of Bowland that would provide educational visits for youngsters to learn about the importance of protecting

these wonderful habitats. Chair of Champion Bowland Mike Pugh said: ‘We were delighted to receive £600 from Goosnargh Gin, with a particular focus on supporting an educational project within the Forest of Bowland, linked to the hay meadows. Working with the AONB, we were able to find the ideal project to support these aims. Located at the Gathering Fields - a site already working in partnership with the AONB to restore their own hay meadows – is the project ‘Re-wild the child’. Re-wild the child, based at the Gathering Fields near Abbeystead, is a grass roots project in its early stages, raising funds and awareness for the rewilding of a wildflower meadow and providing opportunities for educational visits. WYRE FLOOD FORUM We met on Thurs 9th Sept; half in person and half still on gallery view from home or office. With the council chamber at Poulton half empty it did not feel quite right but it will improve. Many council and agency officers were on screen leaving the floor for the reps of parish and town councils and flood action groups. We might all get together by Noel! First, to Garstang. As I write the East gate is fully raised and the west river bank is cluttered with metal sectional fencing. I am told by the Environment Agency officers that the RAM – a hydraulic water raising or lifting machineon the West gate was replaced and is fully operational but a valve on the East gate was found to be leaking during a routine oil change and has been isolated and now awaits repair meaning that the fencing will remain in place until the all clear. The operational efficiency of the two gates is crucial to the security of land, property and lives down stream.

Interestingly, a report from Churchtown FLAG raises the suggestion of additional flood basins higher up river to retain excess water and reduce pressure on the Garstang Basin and defences further down- stream. I know that Thomas Myerscough of the Wyre Rivers Trust is working up plans for NFM –Natural Flood Measures –in the Upper Wyre and we may see more water stored permanently although speaking as a lay man one wouldn’t want to see the Wyre drained dry. The Environment Agency (EA)–a government body- has as its ambition “a nation ready for and resilient to flooding and coastal damage today, tomorrow and to 2100” The EA’s short term aim is a “healthier, greener, sustainable future” and invites everyone to “share our vision”. There can be no doubt that in the run up to COP in Glasgow that the emphasis is on mitigating climate change. Local Issues Confirmed that a topographical survey of Preesall Hill had been completed and when drawings had been received a proposal for drainage improvements up stream of Sunnyside Terrace will be put in hand. LCC are considering connecting drainage on the Hill to the watercourse to the rear of Sandy lane. A group of residents will meet with officers to discuss operations. The FLAG asked if an Acco drain, a narrow strip for domestic use made of a variety of materials, and highway gullies at the junction of Sunnyside Terrace and Sandy lane could be cleared. LCC are taking action. The culvert under Burned House Lane has been inspected and found to be in good condition. Highway improvements on Cart Gate have been undertaken although plans to alter the camber had been abandoned due to adverse ground levels. Instead, an additional pipe at the bottom of Cart Gate has been installed. Work will be undertaken to clear roots in the existing culvert.

WYRE FLOOD FORUM (cont) Hambleton and Stalmine. Matters raised include the drainage culvert from the former police station on Broadpool Lane, a highway drainage pipe in the field opposite Queensland, foul drainage from the culverted watercourse at Rydal Road and questions about Sherbourne Road pumping station. The landowner of the watercourse on Marsh Lane would need to undertake work to clear and maintain. Stalmine asked LCC to look at the junction of Highgate Lane and Staynall Lane. A request was made for the layout of the foul pumping station on Kiln lane including invert levels of discharge to Wardley’s Creek. Churchtown FLAG confirmed that most of their issues have been resolved by LCC including the installation of new drainage at the junction of the Avenue and A6 and at Ainspool Lane. St Michaels; someone unknown has created a Clough (a gully) on Humblescough Brook

watercourse under the road leading to the quarry. EA claim not to be responsible but will investigate. UU are working with the FLAG to resolve the discharge of sewage from the Gt Eccleston to Churchtown Sewer on Rawcliffe Road. This will be the subject of a high level investigation. Great Eccleston: Again the hazard of flooding on A586 at Whites Bridge raised with a request to LCC to improve signage. EA were surveying the watercourse right bank. At Out Rawcliffe; work on Bodkin lane flooding completed and also at Dry Bread Lane. LCC confirm that riverside road just past Town End is being investigated for drain clearance. A quick round up of flooding issues in Over Wyre and Rural Wyre raised by residents and discussed with our officers. It is to be hoped that we will have a quiet autumn and winter. Roger Brooks

THE SCHOOL ON THE HILL Preesall Fleetwood’s Charity School Now that restrictions have been lifted in schools meaning no more class bubbles – we are delighted to be a school family again! Our pupils have come back to school being able to mix at playtimes and our first whole school worship in the hall was a joyous occasion! We are very pleased to welcome not only our new Pre-School and Reception pupils and families but also several families who have moved into the area and some new members of our staff team. One thing I have noticed about our pupils is how friendly they are – new pupils settle in very quickly and develop friendships through school. This year, we hope will be a much more ‘normal’ year for us in school. We have already started planning some exciting events and activities for our pupils as part of what we aim to do is offer a wide range of opportunities above and beyond the curriculum. This is how we help our pupils to develop individual talents and find something where they can ‘shine’. We already offer musical tuition for a range of instruments however, this year, we are going to be working with the Rock Steady Music School to add a new dimension to our music provision. Their teachers offer lessons in drums, keyboard and electric guitar which has caused great excitement amongst our pupils! As well as this, our Year 5 pupils will all be learning to play the saxophone as part of the curriculum. A group of pupils are working with Laura Sandham, Principal of the Laura Sandham School of Dance, on a piece which they will perform at the Wyre and Fylde Schools’ Dance Festival at the Winter Gardens in November. The dance school are also providing a full programme of dance classes in school including street, cheer and acro dance. These are also open to pupils in the community.

For a small school, we are able to offer a wide range of sports. Our Year 5 pupils are currently having Quidditch lessons in PE, which you will be familiar with if you are a Harry Potter fan, and Year 6 are taking part in Basketball lessons. We are also taking part in a primary football league at Poolfoot Farm each week to add in the competitive element of sport. In December, we have our regular visit to Lancaster on Ice where our older pupils learn to skate with a professional and have exclusive use of the ice rink and hopefully a ride on the Big Wheel. We are also very much looking forward to a Foundation Stage/ KS 1 Nativity performance and our KS 2 Christingle Service at St. Oswald’s Church which is guaranteed to give everyone that magical Christmas feel. As a church school, our links with St. Oswald’s are strong. Shortly, we will be celebrating Harvest Festival with the whole school and our families in church. This year, we will be donating harvest gifts to the local volunteer support group as we recognize that there are members of our community who are in need. We are always keen to support local and national charities and our pupils learn how they can help to make a difference. Our School Council will shortly be deciding which charities they would like to support this year and planning fund-raising events. Year 6 also have their residential to look forward to next summer at Lockerbie Manor which is a fabulous outdoor and adventurous centre. There will be many more activities and events added through the year, balanced with providing a broad and exciting curriculum. We are lucky to have amazing school grounds where we can offer outstanding outdoor learning opportunities as well as Forest School sessions. Being a small school, our family friendly

THE SCHOOL ON THE HILL (cont) approach is very important; older pupils love being able to spend time with younger ones. Returning in September to a school year without restrictions and class bubbles means we have some very happy children and staff! I am very proud of how all pupils have quickly settled into a normal school life - our core school rules: Be Kind; Be Respectful and Be Brave are clearly evident as you wander around our school at any part of the day. Our whole school community are excited about what the next year will bring for Fleetwood’s Charity School. Applications are now open for the 2022 Reception intake. www.gov.uk/apply-forprimary-school-place Please take advantage of our open school sessions in October if you would like to look around our school. SUPERIOR PROTECTIVE & PERFORMANCE COATINGS

POWDER COATING & ALLOY WHEEL REFURBISHMENT Powder coating is the most durable coating you could use as a finish for a variety of surfaces, not just metal. The chemical bonds give a superior coating that makes it suitable for both machinery and everyday items. It holds well to extreme weather and physical impact, meaning it’s resistant to scratches, abrasions, and chips. At North Coat Ltd we have the capacity to undertake work for a variety of sectors in our purpose built, state-of-the-art powder coating facility. This allows us to undertake smaller contracts for domestic customers, whilst having the flexibility and oven space to accommodate work for larger commercial contracts. Alloy wheel refurbishment can transform the look of any car and add value. Most of the world’s largest manufacturers use powder coating to coat their wheels. However, over time, kerb and pothole damage and the use of acids to clean wheels can leave your wheels and your car looking worn and tired. North Coat Ltd will give your wheels a new lease of life, reconditioning them back to their original glory or treating them to a colour change. Our domestic restoration service extends to gates, railings, garden furniture and beyond. We also offer a paint stripping service. Please contact us for further information.

MEN’S SHED Are you interested in joining? As the new appointed mental health champion at Wyre Council, I am hopefully trying to start a Men’s shed over Wyre. Sheds are mainly ‘grassroots’ community activities that come about in response to shared needs. These have mostly been for men to access tools, workbenches, skills and opportunities to make and mend in the company of others. Men’s sheds bring health benefits by encouraging physical and mental activities, and improved wellbeing by providing an enjoyable way to stay socially integrated in local communities, by being creative, and learning or passing on skills. The Shovels in Hambleton have kindly offered the use of the dining room to meet. If you’re interested in joining, please get in touch using the contact details below.

KNOTT END & PREESALL IN BLOOM As we approach the end of another year the team would like to thank all those people who have helped to keep the villages ‘in bloom’. Thanks to those who donated money or helped in anyway with the care of the tubs and flower beds. We are especially grateful to those who helped with the watering during the prolonged dry spells. These lengthy periods with little or no rain seem to be becoming a feature of spring and summer so we will probably be looking for your help again in future years! Thanks to all. The In Bloom Team

SUDOKU (ans p62)

STALMINE WEDNESDAY CLUB

Do you know that the word ‘sudoku‘ is a Japanese pun meaning ‘numbers should be single, unmarried’?

Wed 10th Nov, 1:30pm Stalmine Village Hall

Maki Kaji first promoted sudokus in Japan in 1984, but the craze only took off in England in 2004 when The Times newspaper started to publish them. Over 100 million people play sudokus around the world now.

The Wednesday club will reopen on Wed 10th Nov. In view of current regulations, it will, by necessity, be a more scaled-back affair. The meeting will commence at 1:30pm, with a talk and demonstration.

For the November meeting we will have Maki Kaji died in August and tributes have Brenda demonstrating paper craft. She will been paid to him as the godfather of Sudoku. also be bringing her jewellery and cards This month we offer a sudoku, too. A regular which will be available to purchase. This will sudoku player should be able to complete be followed by tea and cakes. There will be ours in under 10 minutes, but 15 minutes no raffle at this meeting. would be excellent for a beginner. Good luck! Keith Thompson

Sudoku is played on a grid of 9 x 9 spaces. Within the rows and columns are 9 ‘squares’ (made up of 3 x 3 spaces). Each row, column and square (9 spaces each) needs to be filled out with the numbers 1-9, without repeating any numbers within the row, column or square. Each Sudoku grid comes with a few numbers already filled in; the more spaces filled in, the easier the game. The more difficult Sudoku puzzles have very few spaces that are already filled in.
