There is almost no management guidebook on the market that does not cite the following words “Stagnation is regression”. Even though it has been extensively used for a long time the simple truth of the statement means it retains its currency. The ones who rest on their successes will be overtaken by others.

Thus you can be assured that Quadriga University of Applied Sciences constantly moves itself and others forward – starting with the institution itself and as a springboard for our students’ careers. Four new study courses, numerous highly-engaging research projects, as well as enlightening expert conferences and a vital alumni network are contributing to our maxim.

Currently, Quadriga University is accepting applications for the academic year 2015,, which will start in June. The next year promises to be filled with inspiring conversations, great networking opportunities and chances for personal, professional and academic development. The University is still accepting applications from those willing to contribute their experience and thirst for knowledge. Classes will include communication experts from various branches and we welcome applications from everyone interested in advancing their careers and enriching their personal and professional portfolio through academic study and handson practice. With this issue of our newsletter, we hope to give you an impression of the Quadriga network and its activities.

Annual Reception

Graduates honoured at the Annual Reception of Quadriga University —— The honouring of the graduates of the MBA Communication & Leadership and the MBA Public Affairs & Leadership degree programme is the highlight of each year’s annual reception.

Therefore Quadriga University traditionally invites its students, alumni, trustees and mentors in order to get together and joyfully celebrate at the graduation ceremony. Aside from this, further engagement is provided through presentations and speeches of communication professionals at the event. Furthermore the alumni and trustees come together for their yearly meeting and discuss issues concerning the University’s development.

celebratory speech to the subject of political credibility and trust in politics by pointing out the essential role of communication management in the field of politics.

He emphasized the importance of taking clear positions and enhancing the transparency of politics in times of increasingly fast-paced and intense debates with a critical public. In his speech he explicitly acknowledged the contribution of the Quadriga University, which within the scope of their educational training thoroughly prepares its students for this challenge. In their course of studying, the decision makers from politics and economics acquire skills enabling them to adequately communicate with their environment in a professional and responsible way.

Board of Trustees and Mentors expanding their involvement —— During the committee sessions at the annual reception all trustees and mentors of the Quadriga University came together in order to share practices, discuss the university’s development with the executive committee and jointly advance ideas and projects. As part of this year’s committee session, Elisabeth Schick has been elected as the new chairwoman. With Elisabeth Schick, Senior Vice President Communications & Government Relations of the BASF Group, an experienced communication manager, who has also been elected as “PR Manager of the year 2012” took over this prestigious position. Due to the commitment of the communication professionals and their suggestions from actual practice, the Quadriga University is able to ensure a high degree of practical relevance as well as excellence in the advancement of its degree programmes and accompanying services. In his speech during the committee session, Vice President René Seidenglanz introduced his development plans regarding the research activities of the university. He also outlined future steps concerning the expanding of the university network as well as the orientation of the academic institute.

Furthermore the university warmly welcomed new board of trustees’ member Christine Graeff, Head of Communication European Central Bank (ECB). As a new member she introduced the key points of her coming actions during the session in July.

Quadriga University of Applied Sciences congratulates all students on their graduation —— After 18 month of studying, the students of the year 2012 celebrated their graduation ceremony while also honouring the best performers of each degree programme.

Elisabeth Schick, the new chairwoman of the Quadriga board of trustees explicitly acknowledged these outstanding achievements and wished each graduate all the best for their further professional career.

As representatives of their fellow students, the year’s best graduates used the opportunity to provide anecdotes of their past year and a half of studying, while also thanking everyone involved in the educational programme for their support.

—— The new M.A. and MBA programmes Communication & Leadership and Public Affairs & Leadership started with their first attendance period this April.

Altogether 60 new students passed through the application process involving several stages and a final assessment in order to secure one of the coveted places for the master-degree programme. With their occupational profiles the new students cover a full range of expertise in the field of professional communication management. Such a composition of the team – as in the years before – contributes to a mutual cross-sectorial and interdisciplinary exchange.

During a welcoming introduction meeting the fellow students got to know each other while receiving detailed information about the study programme.

Matthias Machnig, director of the SPD election campaign and member of the university’s Board of Trustees, held a keynote speech at the Quadriga Forum. In his speech he pointed out how political communication distinguishes itself from other disciplines, the characteristics of a transnational campaign and which management techniques are necessary for the successful implementation of a campaign.

International MBA Communication & Leadership: The new students of the second year International MBA Communication & Leadership programme also passed their first attendance period in Berlin. The group consisting of students from England, Poland, Russia, Norway, Belgium, Estonia and the Netherlands visited diplomat Hans Ulrich Seidt at the Department for Foreign Affairs and explored Berlin on a boat tour around the city.

41st Berlin Marathon - Congratulations to the Quadriga Team!

—— On the 28th of September, more than 40.000 Marathon runners from all over the world took over Berlin’s streets.

Among them, the Quadriga Team with students of the international MBA Communication & Leadership programme. Encouraged by great weather conditions and a great overall atmosphere they ran 42 km across the city of Berlin and all crossed the finish-line! They accomplished a great performance proving that a strong volition will carry you far.

Besides the training for their own personal fitness they also promoted a good cause. With their participation in the run they supported the “Shoe 4 Africa” project.

“Shoe 4 Africa“is a society, whose challenge it is to work with communities to create better lives focusing on Health & Education. One of their projects is the construction of East Africa’s first public children´s hospital. The Quadriga Team supports the project and raised funds in order to help finishing the construc-

tion works. You can find further information about the project on www.shoe4africa.org. The Quadriga University is proud of their runners and congratulates them on their accomplishment.

Followed by their lead we hope that even more students will be motivated to participate in the marathon for the upcoming years.

A joyous evening with fellow students

Alumni network receives new impulses

—— After their last phase of attendance the students of the International MBA Communication & Leadership of the year 2013 gathered together on Quadriga Campus for a collective dinner and an evening full of festivities. In the friendly atmosphere they reflected on the past month of studying as well as sharing their future plans. A period of intensively writing their master theses will follow-up this event, before they see each other again at next year’s Graduation Ceremony. Over time within their study they got to know each other very well and even became friends, which made it a joyous night with lots of laughing and anecdote sharing.

—— How to enhance new impulses in the constantly-growing alumni network? – This question was the main topic of discussion at the Quadriga Alumni Network meeting. Since the first graduates in 2012 developed foundations and goals for the network, both the network as well as the University itself, have developed markedly. Now is the right time to consider new strategies and perspectives on this issue. In the meeting all alumni members agreed to further enhance the outside presence of the network.

This purpose has been promptly implemented through several participations. To mention just one, the “Pecha Kucha” Session at the Communication Congress organized by Quadriga alumni was a great success and impressions of the presentation have been tweeted through several channels in the communication branch. One of the next steps will be the launch of regular local get-togethers for alumni and members of the Quadriga network.

International perspectives for MBA Students in London —— This month the International MBA Communication & Leadership headed to London for their Module in Accounting, Finance & Marketing. Besides their scientific study they had the opportunity to meet up with practical professionals like Tobias Nordström of Forsman & Bodenfors and Graham Smith of the British lobby group Republic to discuss recent topics and trends in the fields of communication and public affairs as well as visiting a British University for an insight.

In keeping with its mission to prepare communication managers for a globalized future, Quadriga University‘s MBA Communication & Leadership has a truly international perspective. „Spotlight Master­ Thesis“ —— At this year’s annual reception a couple of new graduates from Quadriga University presented the results of their prepared master theses. In the past months, excellent and practical master theses concerning a variety of topics in the field of communications management, politics and corporate management have been written. One of these excellent examples has been Nadja von Keeken who introduced her exciting results concerning the crisis communication during the shutdown of Nokia´s business location in Bochum. Further interesting presentations were devoted to the themes conception and implementation of a standardized project management for communication agencies as well as an analysis of the government communication in the framing of the euro crises.

Apologies as instruments of crisis communication

—— Data protection challenges, copyright issues and new disruptive services raise the question of appropriate regulatory approaches for today’s information society.

Is the classical governmental regulation the only way to ensure regulations? Do we need a new article of association for the internet or is it also possible to use co-or self-regulation procedures?

—— Prof. Dr. Janssen Danyi and co-author Annelie Jenne, research assistant at the Department Corporate Communications, presented results of their analysis of apology discourses of companies at this year’s 100th annual meeting of the National Communication Association in Chicago.

Prof. Dr. Christian Thorun, Professor in the Department of Politics and Public Affairs at Quadriga University and Prof. Dr. Gerald Spindler, University of Goettingen, presented their key points in the debate over digital regulatory policy at the event “Rules in the internet – The end of the constitutional state or a sharing of responsibilities” of the Self-Regulation Information Economy Association (SRIW), .

The study is based on the rhetorical communication analysis between Grünenthal and the different victim associations. It reveals chances and challenges of serious apologies on behalf of companies also identifying strategies for successful “Activist Public Relations” that are contrary to so called “pseudo apologies”. In order to respond to public pressure these “pseudo apologies” are often used as an instrument in matters of crisis communication trying to improve a company’s damaged image.

Expert knowledge online —— The Quadriga Reseach Blog is a platform for people with an interest in economic or scientific matters in order to exchange research developments, current trends and research results.

Interest is primarily focused on developments in academic fields such as Corporate Communications, Public Affairs, Leadership and Human Resources Management.

Supporting the transfer between science and practice through research and teaching is part of the Quadriga University of Applied Sciences’ mission. External Scientists are welcome to publish as well as discuss their results on the blog. http://research-blog.quadriga.eu

Quadriga Highlights & Events European Communication Summit 2014

Accumulated expertise in Brussels —— “A place to build and foster relations with industry peers from all over Europe. A perfect platform to return energized to your working desk, full of new ideas”, commented one of the participants on this year’s European Communication Summit. Again over 600 in-house communicators from across Europe joined the annual two-day conference in Brussels. Participants came from the fields of business, politics, associations and media. More than 80 top speakers held presentations and discussions during the Summit, among them Christian Laurence of Munich Re and Vice President of the Board of Trustees of Quadriga University.

Time to network between the breaks

—— This was one focus of this year‘s 5th Conference Internal Communication hosted by Quadriga University. On October 30th/31st more than 120 communication professionals came together in Berlin to discuss the latest developments in Internal Communications. From Austria to France and Spain to Ukraine, more than 25 Nationalities were present for two days of discussion, learning and

networking. Stacey Minton, Public Relations Director at Celgene once again professionally led through the two day programme with sessions on integrating employees in strategic decision making processes, fostering collaboration during times of organizational change, various internal communication tools and ways to stimulate strategic employee activism. Speakers from Société Générale, Mondelez, Lufthansa Cargo, SES or Jyske Bank shared their valuable knowledge. In addition to the variety of best practices participants exchanged during various workshop sessions, the speed networking and peer-to-peer session. “Whether you are new or well-experienced in internal communication, this conference broadens your view and gives fruitful information.” to quote a satisfied participant.

—— In September 2014 it was that time again: The annual Digital Communication Awards (DCA) took place in Berlin. Hosted by the Quadriga University, the DCA honour achievements exclusively in the field of Digital Communication. Within 38 different categories, covering disciplines from social media communications to digital public affairs, the Who’s Who of the digital communication industry has been awarded for their excellent performances. Reputable companies, Institutions and NGOs like Lufthansa, Bundesministerium für Verkehr und digitale Infrastruktur or the League of Young Voters ranked among the lucky winners of the event.

The evaluation of the entries has been conducted by a jury of 47 renowned communication professionals as well as social media and digital communication experts. Due to the variety of their academic and practical backgrounds a high degree of practical quality and impartiality in the evaluation process has been ensured. Among the jury members were numerous professionals of the Quadriga Network. Prof. Dr. Claudia I. Janssen Danyi (Department Corporate Communications), Alumna Elke Woessner (Head of PR and Marketing, PPRO Financial Ltd.) as well as Quadriga Alumni Network Speaker Andreas Jensvold (Communication Manager and Speaker, Veolia Umweltservice GmbH) are just some of the renowned professionals to name, who contributed their expertise in the evaluation process. This emphasizes that Alumni of the Quadriga University are highly involved in a strong network, sharing their proficiency with experts from all over the communication branch and thus adding to the quality of each event.

Altogether the Digital Communication Awards have been a great success. After the honouring of the winners the gala continued with its entertaining evening programme. The great overall atmosphere provided excellent opportunities to network and make new contacts, while cheerfully celebrating. The event came to an end with the guests dancing the night away during the glittery after-show party.

Dr. Jörg Ritter conferred professorship —— Dr. Jörg K. Ritter has been appointed as new professor for business administration with majors in human resources and Dr. Ritter is an experienced expert organizational developand councilor in the HR-field ment. With Prof. Ritter the Quadriga University further expands its expertise in the Department of Management & Economics. Together with research associate Melanie Baier he is responsible for the establishment of the new MBA – degree programme Leadership in Human Resources.

New contact for applicants International MBA —— From November 2014 Fabian Klein joins the team of Quadriga University. He is responsible for the access to the international MBA Communication & Leadership and its scholarship programme.

Communication & Network Prof. Dr. Ritter has many years of practical experience as a consultant at Egon Zehnder, one of the leading personnel and business consultancies. Prior to that he has been working for Mc Kinsey, the privatization agency Berlin as well as the ministry of economics. Within the scope of his teaching and research activities at Quadriga University he will focus on topics such as human resources management, governance and organizational development especially for family businesses.

Prof. Adi announced Head of Department —— Prof. Dr. Ana Adi will be joining Quadriga University of Applied Sciences in Berlin as Head of the Prof. Ana Adi has an international Department of Corporate background in PR and Communication Communication in early 2015. She is a digital humanist who teaches, researches and provides consultancy on matters related to digital media strategy and social media monitoring and measurement. She is also researching the Olympic Games looking in particular at media at the Games, discourses about their humanitarian mission and memory of the Games.

Ana has a very international background in public relations and strategic communication having worked, learned and taught in USA, UK, Belgium, Bahrain, Thailand and Romania. She is a polyglot and an avid traveler and supporter of internationalization in education. Her work is showcased on www.anaadi.net

New person responsible for communication issues —— Joining the Quadriga Team in August Janna Schlender is the new Head of Communications and Stakeholder Management. She is now responsible for the development and maintenance of the university network. Prior to her new position she worked as Development Associate for the Janna Schlender speaks for Quadriga University of NGO – International Campaign for Tibet Applied Sciences Deutschland e.V. as well as leading the music department of the radio station Energy Berlin. Most recently she operated in the field of public relations and event management, such as for the Jugendtheater Büro Berlin.

Strengthening the field of Human Resources —— Since July Melanie Baier supports the Quadriga Team as the new study advisor.

Following her professional background as a research associate at TU Dresden and working in the business development of Melanie Baier is working together with Prof. Dr. Ritter an interdisciplinary research institution she is now responsible for the establishment of the new MBA – degree programme Leadership in Human Resources.
