Little breaks, big adventures One of the amazing things about time is how much you can do with very little of it. Just because your window of opportunity for escaping to the coast may be a little briefer than you’d hoped, it shouldn’t mean you can’t have a jam packed short break.

p48

A coast packed with delicious delights We defy anyone not to love the food on offer in Pembrokeshire. From freshly landed seafood to fine dining or woodfired pizza in a tipi - it’s all here and it’s

all mouth wateringly delicious.

Your pet needs to press paws It can often be a tough life being a pet. After all, it’s not easy being adorable 24/7 and those slippers certainly won’t chew themselves. It’s time to recognise the hard work your beloved pet has to do and treat them to a trip to the coast.

The Coastal Way is our DNA At Coastal Cottages we have been helping guests plan trips to Pembrokeshire for nearly 40 years. We are proud to have been voted the Best in Wales for quality and service and to have received accolades for our innovative online presence. It’s really our people who are the centre of our DNA which makes what we do so unique, special and unmatched in Pembrokeshire.

or cycling and running our beautiful coastline. Most of us have lived here all our lives and as Pembrokeshire changes as dramatically as the seasons, we can help all year round.

You see, at our heart, we are a small local family-run business and all live here in Pembrokeshire. We live by the beaches and in the “mountains” of the Preseli Hills and we know just how extraordinary the changing of the seasons can be here. Our spare time is spent exploring the county for ourselves, finding new hideaways to tell the team about and sharing details of the new must-visit eatery we discovered the night before.

We want you to discover the summer and winter walks on the Coast Path, the secret romantic spots, where to take the family on a rainy day (not that it rains here of course!) and the best places to see some of the incredible wildlife along our coastline. We’ve eaten in the restaurants and drank in the pubs, we’ve indulged in freshly made welsh cakes from the local bakery and enjoyed fresh crab from the fisherman up the road. We’ve taken many a photograph of the

iconic landmarks, visited the magnificent castles and spent time at some of the unique events that now sit proudly in our annual calendar. Our cottage collection is also different, we only accept about 20% of the cottages offered to us and we strive to offer Pembrokeshire’s finest collection. From castles and beach side mansions to 1 bedroom cliff top escapes. We also visit all our properties on a regular basis, so we are more than happy to talk you through the intricacies of a cottage, and what might be right for you and your party.

We’ve been at the heart of making happy holiday memories for countless guests for nearly 40 years Over 70% of our guests come back year after year and we hope that we can welcome you to our family this year. Time away together with our loved ones has never been so important, so please feel free to pick up the phone and have a chat with us as I am sure you will find us to be that little bit of difference you have been looking for. Thank you again for considering Coastal Cottages and we look forward to looking after you, your family, and friends for years to come.

E X P L O R E O U R C OA S T,

More than 186 miles of the most beautiful coastline in the world awaits, but how will you choose to explore it?

6

Needle Rock, North Pembrokeshire

P

embrokeshire is blessed with more than 186 miles of wild, rugged coastline and being surrounded by the sea has shaped the culture of Pembrokeshire as much as it has the landscape. The numerous quaint fishing villages of centuries gone by, may have lost their fishing fleets but the stoic charm remains. Many of the old seaside cottages now instead welcome guests looking to explore the coast with many looking to take to the famous Coast Path and explore the only coastal National Park in the UK. For most people who visit Pembrokeshire, and for many who live here, exploring the coast is always close to the top of the to do list and with good reason. With seemingly endless variety around every corner, it’s impossible to grow tired of being constantly amazed by the next stretch of coast and every day spent exploring it feeling like a genuine adventure. Part of that adventure is often choosing how exactly you’re going to spend the day taking it all in, because there are so many great ways to tackle it!

There are the obvious choices like walking the legendary Coast Path or taking to one of the pristine beaches for the day but there are some other choices available that are just as rewarding and afford an entirely different perspective of the coast. How does kayaking through sea caves sound? Or what about a leisurely session of paddleboarding from one beach to another? A boat trip to one of the many islands off the coast? Or finally, how about taking on the Wales SwimRun - you’ll win a medal for your efforts if you manage to beat the tide! There are so many things to do, the options are endless.

Porthclais

The epic Coast Path winds its along through the ever-changing coastal landscape. Every twist and turn reveals something totally new. From ancient fishing harbours to deserted coves, the experience is awe inspiring.

The Coast Path 186 MILES AND 50 YEARS OF THE

T

he Coast Path opened back in May 1970 and over the past 50 years it has drawn thousands of people, many of whom return to their favourite stretch year after year. This spectacular pathway totals a length of 186 miles running between St Dogmaels in the north and Amroth in the south, with some debate as to which is the start and which is the end. We’re proud to say our Path was a trailblazer (shameless pun) as it was the very first National Trail in the country. Nowadays, it forms part of the wider 870 mile Wales Coast Path which covers the full length of the country’s coastline, formed much more recently in 2012. No matter where you start and finish your journey, you are sure to be greeted with extraordinary views. Hike the steep hillside to the viewpoint atop Carn Llidi for scenes of porpoise and Ramsey Island, or amble the headland at Manorbier and Lydstep for castle sightings and panoramas of Caldey Island and Gower. Pass through quaint coastal villages such as Little Haven and bustling seaside towns like Saundersfoot. The landscape has been ever-changing over the last half century, meaning that your visit is never really

complete and there are always new sights to see. Take a walking tour of the south coast for a photo of The Green Bridge of Wales near Bosherston, an iconic Pembrokeshire landmark which is sculpted by the weather and waves every single day. The Path takes you across beaches, through farmland, along bridleways and more, with accessible stretches to suit everyone like the level stretch through the old railway line between Saundersfoot and Wiseman’s Bridge.

Abereiddy

Go solo, travel with your walking group, take a partner and stop for a romantic picnic or go all out and take the whole family - dog included!

it’s a challenge to say the least! For a more manageable approach, you (and your dog) can hop aboard the coastal shuttle buses so you needn’t walk the same stretch twice.

The true joy of the Coast Path is that all you need is a pair of walking boots and the world is your oyster. Choose sandy starting points such as Tenby South Beach and Newgale, or explore paths less-wandered such as Cwm Yr Eglwys and St Brides.

Photographers, make sure to bring your cameras. Birdwatchers, don’t forget your binoculars. Foodies, bring a hearty appetite as you’ll find a treasure trove of cafes, food huts and even a converted fishing boat come street kitchen at Cafe Mor at Freshwater West.

To walk the full length, you need twelve days and some stamina. With 35,000 feet of ascent and descent, walking the Pembrokeshire Coast Path in its entirety has been compared to climbing Everest - so

ositioned on a stunning stretch of the Pembrokeshire Coast within a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest lies Musselwick House. The house itself is a magnificent detached house within 60 acres of farmland and is set on the waterside overlooking Dale Bay. Easily join the Coast Path from here to explore The Gann and Dale to the west, or venture east towards St Ishmaels and Sandy Haven. The Marloes Peninsula lies further afield along with Skomer Island, home to our resident colony of breeding puffins. Nature lovers will be in heaven here, surrounded by the colourful flora and fauna which creates a vibrant coastal landscape. Sightings of local bird life are guaranteed here as the SSSI hints - this region is teeming with winged wildlife. Birdwatchers will need a clean notebook to ensure you have enough room to record all your incredible sightings of these creatures in their natural habitats. The house stands just a few steps away from the beach meaning access to the water is as simple as can be, and boaters will be pleased to know there is a slipway over the water at Dale where they can launch from.

10

As for the house interior, picture contemporary meets traditional in this cosy home from home. Think high ceilings, wooden floors, large sash windows and feature fireplaces. Musselwick House is a top choice come rain or shine, with a spacious garden perfect for alfresco dining and a wood burning stove in the lounge for cosy winter nights in. A farmhouse kitchen and large dining area lend themselves well to large family lunches whilst the barbecue provides a handy alternative to indoor cooking. Full Property Details

elin Abereiddy guarantees a stay like no other. Nestled into the cliff side, this restored 18th Century mill is in a breathtaking position overlooking Abereiddy Beach. Ideal for a walking holiday, you can drop your car keys on the Welsh dresser and spend your week exploring the surrounding rugged coastline without even having to move the car. The one-of-a-kind abandoned slate quarry known as the Blue Lagoon lies just around the corner with its remarkably vibrant turquoise waters - no stay in Abereiddy is complete without a visit. Don your wetsuit for an hour of coasteering here (tuition is available from the car park) or pass by on your journey along the Coast Path towards Porthgain where you can pick up fresh fish and chips caught by local fishermen from that very harbour. The views from this cottage across this northwestern bay will create memories to last a lifetime with perfectly positioned terraces to make the most of the vista. Being such a small hamlet, Abereiddy promises a fairly peaceful break with only the rhythmic motions of the waves and the occasional sound of seagulls. Melin Abereiddy’s traditional features of slate floors, wooden A-frame beams, rustic kitchen, wood burning stove, a cosy inglenook, homely bedrooms and French doors make this property fantastic for snuggling up inside after an exhausting day exploring Pembrokeshire. or explorers wishing to tackle the Angle peninsula of the Pembrokeshire Coast Path, 2 Chapel Bay makes a top choice for a base. Set in an elevated position atop the cliffs, this Grade II listed building dates back to the Victorian era and is pleasantly concealed from the hustle and bustle of the popular beach via an unmade road. This property is located alongside the Coast Path so walkers need not travel far to join the world-class walkway. Your starting point here offers views across the estuary towards Herbrandston; taking the trail to the right brings you to Pembroke Dock with views towards Milford Haven and Gelliswick, whilst hiking to the left will take

12

you around the headland with views over St Annes Head and towards the Castlemartin Firing Range (check MOD restrictions before venturing this way). or Coast Path explorers and ramblers, Porthgain is a favourite. This seaside location merges a picturesque seascape with a fascinating industrial history dating back to a time when slate and stone was exported from the nearby quarries via a purpose-built railway. The old reddish brickwork buildings still make an iconic feature in this quaint little village. Stay at Coastal View and you are just a few steps away from joining the Coast Path in both directions. Following the walkway to the west takes you towards Abereiddy and the recognisable Blue Lagoon past the remote Traeth Llyfn where you can go rock pooling or enjoy a beach picnic. Heading east takes you through Trefin and Abercastle, two more peaceful seaside villages. Continue onto Abermawr Beach which is only accessible via the Coast Path and you’ll be greeted with a surprisingly large sandy bay which you may be lucky enough to have all to yourself. This cosy cottage is decorated with beamed ceilings, comfortable furnishings and a log burner and overlooks the once-industrial but now sleepy harbour. Coastal View is set back in the grassy bank next door to The Sloop Inn, a cosy coastal pub which comes highly revered as one of the best places to get seafood in Pembrokeshire. The hamlet is also home to The Shed Bistro where you can dine in or purchase

fresh seafood to take away from the local fishermen who still fish out of the harbour here. You can also call into the ice cream parlour over the road or pay a visit to the independent art gallery.

ANSWER THE CALL OF THE

P

embrokeshire is the UK’s only coastal National Park, so to visit without exploring the sea would be an opportunity missed. But will your sea adventures be exhilarating or relaxing? Make the most and split your time between both!

you can book all of your seaside adventures in one place. Abereiddy’s Blue Lagoon is well-known for coasteering with its unique turquoise waters, paddle boarding in Saundersfoot is a must but beware, a good sense of balance comes in handy! Boaters love sailing out from Cwm Yr Egwlys and Newport whilst families enjoy a spot of leisurely bodyboarding at Manorbier.

With a coastline of sandy beaches, rocky coves, picture-perfect harbours and convenient slipways once used in industry days gone by, there are ample choices for where to launch your saltwater adventures. Will you go paddleboarding in Tenby, surfing in Newgale or kayaking at Stackpole Quay? Or will you try them all?

When the surf is good in Pembrokeshire, it’s amongst the best in the UK. Locals turn out in their droves to catch early waves in the hope of having the bays all to themselves, but sometimes, it’s the large sandy shores like Newgale and Freshwater West which attract the crowds. Solo surfers on their holidays here will no doubt pick up a few top tips as they zip their wetsuits on the pebbles alongside the locals who are venturing in too.

Adrenaline junkies love to try windsurfing and jet skiing, traditionalists like to perfect the art of surfing and sea kayaking, whilst brave souls love a cold-weather dip in the winter months. Many of our beloved seaside resorts around the county offer watersports tuition, equipment hire and boat trips so

14

Seawater bathers adore the tranquil “secret” beaches as they can swim until their heart’s content with nothing but the sounds of the waves and the smell of the fresh sea air. Try Swanlake Bay near Manorbier or Porthsychan Beach near Strumble Head. Cardigan Bay is the place to go if you’re hoping to take a boat trip and sightsee some dolphins in their natural habitat, whilst Skomer is the famous home of the puffin. Enjoy wildlife safaris sailing along the coast of Ramsey and Grassholm from St Davids, or venture out from Tenby and Saundersfoot. At Tenby, you can also book boat trips to Caldey Island where you can spend the day at Priory Bay paddling in the shore or enjoying sea views from the lighthouse high on the island. Keen anglers sometimes venture to the purple cliffs of Caerfai for a spot of fishing on this mixed ground whilst those in need of a little guidance should seek out the sea fishing boat trips from Tenby Harbour and St Justinians. Take the family to the fun Crabbing Centre inside the brand new Wales International Coastal Centre at Saundersfoot Harbour (lots more exciting attractions due to open here later in 2021!) or head to the craggy headland at Marloes for rock pools galore.

When you’re planning your itinerary, don’t forget there is a whole world underneath the surface to discover. Find a world of sea creatures, shipwrecks and spectacular underwater experiences with a spot of diving at the only protected conservation area in the whole of the UK, Skomer Marine Conservation Zone. Divers of all experiences come from all over the country to launch from St Brides where you can discover an underwater landscape rich in kelp, crabs and cuttlefish. To get a headstart on planning your activity break in Pembrokeshire, it’s worth contacting our Concierge team who can help point you in the right direction with personalised recommendations based on your interests. We can even book you in for boat trips, watersports tuition and help you find your new favourite beach.

THE LOST ART OF

Have you ever noticed how difficult it is to just take it easy? Relax, we’re going to do the hard work so you can rediscover the joys of chilling out.

T

hat moment when you first arrive at your holiday destination... ah bliss. With one big deep breath, the fresh air fills out your lungs and takes with it a whole world of stresses as you exhale. Your shoulders automatically drop a little, releasing tension, and you stop for a moment to appreciate your new surroundings. But how do you extend that fleeting momentary feeling to last your entire stay? Well, booking a

coastal cottage with a hot tub or a pool can take care of that for you. Seaside getaways are therapeutic for the mind, body and soul but not just because they allow you a break from your typical somewhat stressful routine. Scientists suggest that blue spaces like water, the sea and big blue skies have positive health benefits just as green spaces do. Which makes a lot of sense when you think about it.

H

ave you ever sat watching the waves ebb on the seashore and found yourself almost hypnotised by the rhythmic sound and motion? We do on almost a daily basis. Blue spaces are said to encourage calmness and creativity, so it’s no wonder you feel like a whole different person after a visit to the beach. Make sure you have your own private blue space all week long with your own hot tub or pool at your holiday cottage and who knows what personal benefits you’ll receive? Do you have a mind which can’t switch off, or suffer from sleepless nights as a rule? All that could change with just one week surrounded by the serene blue and green spaces Pembrokeshire has to offer. As for encouraging creativity, that explains why so many wonderfully talented artists and writers found a sense of belonging here. Roald Dahl spent Easters at Tenby Harbour where you can stay in the exact same cottage as he did, The Cabin with reference number 41033. Whilst the world renowned poet Dylan Thomas found solace in his now famous writer’s shed overlooking the serene Laugharne estuary. Both incredible wordsmiths surrounded themselves with Pembrokeshire’s finest blue spaces and the world of literature is richer for it.

W

hat better way to start the morning with a leisurely lap of the pool before breakfast? It’s a known fact that exercise is beneficial for the body, helping you keep on the right track and avoid health issues. Also, did you realise how great it is for your mind too? Swimming is a great workout for the entire body but helps to regulate your breathing, can help to lower your blood pressure and improves your sleep. Plus, it’s a great way for kids to burn off that excess energy - a win win! Beachside breaks are well-known to be great opportunities to unwind and recharge your batteries, but a few hours in a hot tub can take it a step further, possibly two if your hot tub overlooks the sea! Let the jet streams relieve tension you didn’t even know you had as the pulsing bubbles imitate those natural wave sounds and stimulate your senses. You’ll be left feeling re-energised, with lower stress and anxiety levels. Pay some extra attention to your wellbeing and treat yourself with some much-needed TLC by pairing your hot tub break by the sea with in-house one-to-one yoga and indulgent spa treatments. Your mental and physical health will thank you.

Just imagine how refreshed you’ll feel after a morning in the hot tub followed by an afternoon of yoga, facials and massages. But why stop there? Add on a whole host of beauty treatments, holistic therapies and massages including manicures, pedicures, reiki, reflexology and hot stone massages. A private pamper party in a cosy coastal cottage sounds like cloud nine. Call our Concierge team on 01437 772 758 who can arrange this for you The great thing about a hot tub cottage is that you can book one for you and your partner as a romantic getaway and toast champagne under a glistening carpet of stars, or you can whisk your girl friends away for a sophisticated spa break they’ve always dreamed of. You can take a gang of your best friends away and use the warming bubbles to ease those muscles exercised during hours of exhilarating watersports or you can gift your mum that mother-daughter weekend you’ve been promising for years.

YOUR PET NEEDS TO

It can often be a tough life being a pet. After all, it’s not easy being adorable 24/7 and those slippers certainly won’t chew themselves. It’s time to recognise the hard work your beloved pet has to do and treat them to a trip to the coast.

O

nce your pooch has had a taste of Pembrokeshire life, they won’t want to go home. And honestly, why would they? With unlimited roaming space, landscapes of all terrains and a county full of welcoming eateries and attractions, there’s plenty to explore.

Reserve in North Pembrokeshire and stumble across the neolithic burial chamber at Pentre Ifan, or trek to the top of Treffgarne rocks for a high viewpoint across most of Pembrokeshire. Wales is known for being a welcoming and friendly country and here in Pembrokeshire, we make sure that same welcome is extended to our fine four-legged friends. Many of the cafes, pubs and

The obvious first choice for adventure is the coastline. Walker’s dogs will delight at the neverending ups and downs of the coastal path - even if their human pets require a pit stop to catch their breaths (and perhaps a sugar hit?). Experienced hiking dogs however will wish to continue charging on around the corner, as will you once you’ve recovered. The views from the Coast Path are truly unbeatable with panoramas for miles on clear days. Do be mindful that some stretches of the Coast Path are farmland so politely keep your friend on a lead when passing through.

Although some beaches have seasonal dog restrictions there is no shortage of dog friendly choices. With a magnificent coastline comes outstanding beaches - too many to list here. Does your pup love to frolic in white sands and dig holes in search of treasure? Or do they prefer to chase the water and leap over waves? Beaches like Broadhaven South and Freshwater West are great fun for all the family with good swell and soft sands backed by grassy dunes, it’s a doggie’s dream. Most of Pembrokeshire’s best beaches are dog friendly all year round so you needn’t worry about going out of your way to find one or leaving someone home to babysit the canine whilst the rest of the family enjoy a beach day. If you and your dog prefer life away from the water or simply fancy a change of scenery, venture inland for a nirvana of rolling Welsh hillsides and fascinating woodlands. Explore Ty Canol Nature

restaurants you’ll visit along your journey are happy to cater for well-behaved dogs. Some even have special doggie menus such as Coco’s Restaurant in Milford Haven, or purchase a doggie ice cream at Gianni’s in St Davids or Periwinkle Tearoom in Saundersfoot. You’ll often find dogs lining the outside seating areas of beachside pubs like The Castle Inn, Little Haven and in Restaurants like The Plantagenet Inn, Tenby (Quay Room only). When you holiday with your family, you want the whole family involved in every moment of memory making so it’s only right that your pooch come with

you on your days out. You can take your pup to explore The Bug Farm, Carew Castle and The Welsh Wildlife Centre, plus the team at Heatherton are always happy to see a friendly doggo walk through the gates. You’ll be pleased to know that our service buses and coastal shuttle services are dog friendly too, making it easier for you to be a little more eco-friendly on

your travels and make friends with other touring dogs. And we don’t stop there, many of our boat tours welcome your happy hounds aboard their sea vessels so swap the car window for an open-topped boat, and see their wide grins as they feel the fresh breeze whip through their fur. The main thing when planning a holiday with your dog is finding the right home from home to suit you.

Beaches, hills, woodlands, moors, mud and sand. Your dog will be truly spoilt for choice. 35

Garron Pill to Lawrenny

St Davids Head

Think waterside views, hints of days gone by and great food stops with this walk. Winter mornings make the perfect time for Stanley’s leisurely stroll around this part of the Cleddau estuary, as he loves to get his little paws muddy but bear in mind – you won’t want to forget your wellies.

No visit to the charming city of St Davids is complete until you and your furry friend have explored the incredible coastline at St Davids Head. Reggie jumps for joy with his first step in the shore at Whitesands – it’s one of his most beloved spots for a game of catch too!

Stanley starts off at Garron Pill walking along the shore towards Lawrenny, through the wild woodland before reaching Lawrenny’s Quayside Café and the Lawrenny Arms pub; both great pit stops for a spot of lunch. The cafe operates on seasonal hours, but do stop off for a fresh crab roll if you’re in the area! Stanley loves to head up to the castle ruins from here before walking down through the village to get back to the car.

Park up in the main beach car park next to the café, beware charges do apply here during the summer months and spaces can be in high demand on those scorching sunny days. Take the footpath up towards the summit at Carn Llidi for views over the coast and Ramsey Island. Reggie loves to wander along the Coastal Path chasing butterflies, insects and his own tail. Just make sure to be careful in areas as you may meet cliff edges and livestock so it’s best to keep your dog on a lead.

3 Miles. Great for young walkers and all dogs, even ones with little legs!

4 Miles. Enjoying the Coast path and stunning views.

DELICIOUS DELIGHTS

Fresh from the sea P

embrokeshire is a seafood lover’s paradise with super-fresh produce available all year round in cafes, pubs and restaurants as well as fishmongers, street food merchants and butchers. Lobster & Mor in Little Haven is one of the most exciting places to sink your teeth into fresh seafood. Call in and choose your live lobster from their display as you order a coffee and crab sandwich for lunch - you won’t be able to resist! Those on foot can swap out the coffee for a G&T made with their own Tir & Mor gin.

With the sea on your doorstep, the catch doesn’t need to go much further to the kitchen. Tenby locals buy all their fresh seafood from Simply Seafood on the harbour, so it can be particularly busy during the summer when the added influx of holidaymakers arrive - but the wait will be worth it. The selection includes lobster, crab, and mackerel, all of which is caught off the coast of Tenby. Mrs Will the Fish in Solva offers a range of prepared dressed crab and lobster, whilst The Fish Plaice in Milford is the port town’s sole fishmonger’s offering everything from cod to scallops.

hink street food and think mouth-watering aromas filling the air, enticing you in to take a bite. Wherever you go in Pembrokeshire, make sure you have a little money in your pocket because you never know where a food truck will park up to tempt you with delicious snacks. (Internet reception on the coast isn’t exactly reliable, so don’t be fooled into thinking you can rely on your contactless card alone!) That being said, there are a couple of firm favourites you can always count on to be exactly where you want them to be. First up is Cafe Mor at Freshwater West, if you’re planning a foodie holiday on the Welsh coast - this one is

a must-visit. Picture an old fishing boat converted into an iconic street food truck offering sea-inspired delicacies, and you’re nearly there. The fascination with this eatery only grows once you’ve paid your first visit and tasted your first sample of their bacon rolls with mermaid confetti and kelpchup. If the weather and the tide align to create suitable conditions, you’ll come across the Cwlbox food truck at Saundersfoot Beach. If not, you can find their delectable delights at The Sandbar in Tenby and Y Gegin in Pembroke Dock, giving you plenty of chances to purchase something tasty wherever you are in the south of the county. Sample their piled-high burgers, loaded fries and handmade churros with rich chocolate dipping

sauce - you’ll want to eat there day after day! Vegan pizza fans may sing a hearty hallelujah when they discover the wonder that is Celtic Crust. This mobile pizza parlour can be found in various North Pembrokeshire destinations including Fishguard and St Davids, and boasts a menu filled with thin-crust pizzas (GF dough available) topped with tangy tomato sauce and oil-based “cheese”. These wood-fired pizzas are accompanied by ever-changing weekly specials and are the perfect takeaway meal to share on the coast whilst you bask in the sunset.

If you’re looking for a real taste of Pembrokeshire with ingredients foraged from a beach only yards from where you order, Cafe MÔr is an absolute must!

here’s something extra delicious about eating food which was grown on your doorstep. The quality is often higher than anything you can find in a supermarket and naturally, it is extremely fresh as it hasn’t travelled halfway around the country before reaching your plate. Shop local for fantastic seasonal produce which will ultimately result in scrumptious meals or order a local produce hamper from our Concierge team on 01437 772 758. Many of Pembrokeshire’s rural high streets are home to a butcher or two and wherever you are, you’re never too far from a remote farm shop. Local produce has never been so available; try some of our staff favourite butchers who offer local produce and are happy to talk you through the provenance. Jon James butchers and Prendergast Butchers in Haverfordwest, The Copper Hog in Tenby, Heywoods of Saundersfoot, Andrew Rees in Narberth and Davies & Son in St Davids. As for farm shops, keep an eye out on your travels along the roads as there has been a surge of farms setting up their own farm shops and welcoming shoppers onto their land allowing you to buy direct from the producers. The best thing about these stores is that you can often pick up most of your groceries in one shop. Four Seasons and Bubbleton Farm Shops are both conveniently located for those visiting Tenby, whilst Steynton Farm Shop is ideal for those staying in Milford. You’ll find Gate 2 Plate in Haverfordwest and a relatively new store in the west at Nolton Farm Shop. There are also a couple of deli slash greengrocers in the area which are worth calling into - St Davids Food and Wine in St Davids, and Wisebuys which has two stores, one in Narberth and another in Pembroke. Here you’ll find freshly baked bread, locally sourced fruit and veg, Welsh milk and cheeses, plus a whole range of pantry staples like chutneys, cereals and snacks.

hilst many love a long week’s holiday or a fortnight away in the summer, for many of us these days a short break is much more achievable. Plan a long weekend away indulging in good food, great company and a fantastic location - we promise you’ll feel all the better for it. It’s undeniable that taking a holiday can only be a good thing. We don’t need scientists to tell us the proven benefits; if you’ve ever taken a holiday yourself then you already know. Escaping your normal routine for just a few days can leave you feeling rested and revitalised, ready to go back to your day-to-day life with a clearer outlook and a more optimistic perspective. So if that’s the case, why do so many of us limit ourselves to just one week’s holiday a year? Why aren’t we taking multiple short breaks instead? Or even better, as well as! After all, short breaks are much easier to fit into your calendar. Take a long weekend here, a few days away there, short breaks can be so much more flexible than a week’s getaway. And Pembrokeshire is the best place for short breaks of all kinds, even if we do say so ourselves. Fancy a few days lapping up the ocean and soaking up the sunshine on the sand? No worries, we have a wealth of sandy beaches and shingle coves to choose from. Looking for a foodie adventure? Experience fine dining at The Stables in Tenby, pop into The Gourmet Pig deli in Fishguard, and sample the seafood specials at the award-winning The Griffin Inn, Dale. If you are hunting for health benefits however, Pembrokeshire’s location has an abundance. The green spaces created by our sweeping Welsh hills and our rolling farmlands have been said to reduce anxiety and relieve stress. Surrounded by the sea, we have blue spaces which are believed to inspire creativity and improve negative moods. So if you are looking for the perfect place to rest, relax, revive and rejuvinate then Pembrokeshire is the ideal place. Find Out More

ith 186 miles of coastline, Pembrokeshire is spoilt for choice when it comes to spectacular beaches. So where do you start? Well thankfully, no two beaches are the same. Some are epic with long sandy shores worthy of a Hollywood blockbuster (and have been known to be just that) whilst others are what you might call pocket-sized in comparison. Ideal for separate families of varying sizes, you can easily spend your days enjoying quality time together here whilst returning to your own property for some privacy. Each of the four dog friendly cottages has their own gardens and paved patios complete with barbecue and garden furniture, meaning you needn’t worry about living on top of each other for the duration of your stay. The separate living arrangements here allow flexibility so different members of your party can split off and do their own thing as and when they please. At the same time, Orlandon Farm Cottages has its own spacious outdoor play area housing a swing, rope bridge and cargo net. There’s also a picnic table here making it a great spot for the whole group to congregate and enjoy some family time before spending the evening in front of the wood burners in your own cottage.

As the name Orlandon Farm Cottages suggests, this cluster is a series of renovated farm buildings - one was once the old farmhouse whilst another is an old blacksmith’s cottage. Beautifully renovated, these properties retain their traditional rustic feel with some original features remaining visible and farmhouse details throughout. Whilst they share a common countryside style, each holiday home has something unique to offer guests.

Orlandon is a great choice for big groups who want to holiday together but still want the option of some space. Orlandon Farm Cottage (Pink) has a downstairs wet room, downstairs bedroom and direct garden access, making it a top choice for elderly grandparents looking to avoid stairs during their stay. Kelwon Cottage (Yellow) is positioned just next door and the handy gate between the two gardens is ideal for two families with young children close in age who might spend much of their time in and out of each other’s homes. Smithies Cottage (Blue) boasts an upstairs master bedroom with a magnificent view over the nearby

Gann Estuary courtesy of the large window, perfect for anyone who loves a lie in with a view. Last but not least is Hoopers Cottage (Detached); it’s the largest of the four with an outdoor shower and downstairs wetroom, handy for those who need to wash the sand from their feet and the mud from their boots before entering. To say this rural group of properties is conveniently located is a huge understatement. If you’re looking for a remote retreat with few interruptions from the outside world, Orlandon Farm Cottages can give you just that. Surrounded by farmland in all directions, you’ll be accompanied by country wildlife, grazing livestock and distant sounds of the sea. If you’re in need of a beach break, you’ll find some of West Pembrokeshire’s finest bays within a short drive. The nearest, St Brides Haven, is just a mile around the corner. If it’s a jam-packed week of activities, adventures and explorations - not a problem. This stretch of coastline is unbeatable for watersports, walking, wildlife, and stargazing.

Orlandon is perfectly placed to enjoy the very best that the National Park has to offer.

C

Keen ramblers best lace up their boots immediately as the footpaths and trails here are something special. The circular walk to St Brides Haven Beach follows the vibrant yellow daffodil fields and alongside fields of roaming cattle and sheep, whilst the internationally recognised Pembrokeshire Coast Path teems with flora, fauna and gorse. Book a guided tour if you’re unsure about exploring the Path alone or if you simply want a little insider knowledge of the history and wildlife in the area.

The nearby shingle bay at St Brides is famous in the UK for being a hotspot for beginner divers, so expect to find wetsuit-clad bodies making their way into the waves with snorkels and oxygen tanks. This region is home to nearly 200 fascinating shipwrecks and many kelp-covered inlets hiding prawns, seahorses and crabs. You can also dive into the unique Skomer Marine Conservation Zone where divers love to sightsee anemones, sea slugs and species of sponges. Skomer Island lies offshore from the Marloes peninsula and is home to the largest breeding colony of puffins. These characterful seabirds may be small in size but they are mighty in personality, and wildlife-watchers would be silly not to visit during their stay at Orlandon. The departure point at Martins Haven is just 15 minutes away so set your early alarm and make your way down to purchase your tickets for same-day sailing (advance tickets not available). Then make your way back to the cottage in time to wake the kids for a spot of breakfast before boarding the boat. If you are keen on exploring them in a competitive way, why not join the annual cross country events of Ras Beca and the Preseli Beast? The Preseli Hills also feature in traditional Welsh folklore. ‘The Mabinogion’ is a collection of stories which are thought to be at least 700 years old and one of these tales tells the legend of Cerrig Meibion Arthur (“The Stones Of The Sons Of Arthur”). According to the tale, the site where the stones are situated, below Foel Cwmcerwyn which is the highest point, marks the place where the sons of King Arthur were slain by a wild boar from Ireland, Twrch Trwyth. Arthur himself is said to lie further afield at Bedd Arthur, also known as “Arthur’s Grave”. It’s definitely walking boot country so don your boots and venture out on one of the many well-trodden trails. One of the most popular walks is the short walk approximately 1.2 miles from the car park to the top of

Foel Eryr, the westernmost summit of the Preseli Ridge. At the summit you can enjoy 360 degree panoramic views of the wild countryside and out to the sea beyond. For the more enthusiastic walkers, why not set out on the 8 mile “Golden Road” marked along the route with “Iron Age” relics and some spectacular views over this part of the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park? The walk is generally fairly easy but steepens towards the summit where you reach the hill fort of Foel Drygarn at 363 meters. Once you have worked up an appetite, stop off at The Tafarn Sinc pub, located in the village of Rosebush, where you will find a warm Welsh welcome, a cosy ambience of yesteryear and delicious home cooked food from hearty traditional Welsh cawl, to juicy steaks, all sourced locally. Once explored the Preseli Hills are sure to become a firm favourite for those who love to go off the beaten track.

Pentre Ifan Burial Chamber, or “cromlech” in Welsh, is over 5000 years old.

Carew Castle

TAKE A STEP BACK IN

Pembrokeshire has a long history dating back further than the neolithic era. Visiting castles, stone circles and ancient battlefields only tell part of the story though, to get a true sense of the history in Pembrokeshire you have to at least spend the night...

84

W

ales and castles go hand in hand, and Pembrokeshire has some brilliantly restored fortresses to visit. Pembroke Castle, Cardigan Castle, Manorbier Castle and Haverfordwest Castle all stand majestically as iconic features in the centre of the towns making them easily accessible for visitors. Carew Castle is one of the most recognisable locations in the county, positioned overlooking a tranquil millpond, whilst Picton Castle lies in its own remarkable grounds near Haverfordwest. Visit these castles and you’ll be following in the footsteps of monarchs, nobility and rebels, discovering a bygone world of revolution, battlements and royalty. To fully understand Pembrokeshire’s sprawling heritage, you must look further than castles alone and luckily, there are historic sites around almost every corner. Stroll through the valley of St Davids to take in the impressive architecture of St Davids Cathedral and visit Dewi Sant’s shrine, then continue on to sightsee the ruined Bishop’s Palace where he once built a monastery in 600 AD. Venture to nearby St Non’s so you can say you’ve seen the very place where Dewi was born. Delve into the wartime era at Angle’s Chapel Bay and Fort Museum which once housed a battery of 6 guns, then learn how Tudor shopkeepers lived and sold their goods at the Tudor Merchant House in Tenby.

Make sure not to leave out a visit to the wonder of a tiny place of worship built into the cliffside at St Govan’s Chapel. Immerse yourself in the Iron Age at North Pembrokeshire’s Castell Henllys, where you can step inside impressive reconstructed roundhouses and try your hand at olde-worlde skills such as weaving baskets from wicker. Over the years, many of our interesting industrial, wartime and agricultural buildings have been converted into luxurious holiday homes, giving you the opportunity to stay in your own slice of history. he Rocket Carthouse is one of those unique properties you simply can’t help but notice when driving past. It stands largely isolated on the country road towards Angle, with a conspicuous tall tower which immediately has you wondering what its backstory is.

and you’ll find yourself gazing out of the windows at the panoramic views of Angle Bay and Freshwater West, just as the coastguard did when this was the Watch Tower. Climb up further onto the roof terrace for a photo opportunity all your friends will envy you for.

As the name suggests, this holiday property was once a storehouse for rockets. Originally built towards the end of the 19th Century, this building housed rockets, lines and breeches buoys for the local coastguard cliff-rescue team until as recently as the 1930s. When ships fell into distress off the coast, a team of up to 20 rescuers would transport the rockets and other rescue apparatus from the storehouse here to the cliffside via carthorse (hence the name), where they would then fire a line to secure the breeches buoy and rescue the ship’s passengers and crew.

Not only is the property itself a top pick for those who love to look back to the past, but it’s in a great position to explore some of the other popular heritage spots in South Pembrokeshire. Chapel Bay Fort & Museum is just a short drive away near the beach at Angle and gives a great insight into the local military history, whilst Pembroke Castle is also nearby and is famous for being the birthplace of Henry Tudor VII. Carew and Manorbier Castles are within a short drive, as is the fascinating chapel built into the cliffside at St Govans.

Since then, the building has been designated a Grade II listed building, and has been extended and renovated into a wonderful one-of-a-kind holiday home where you can stay. Curl up on the sofa underneath the wooden beam ceiling and you’ll be sitting in the very spot where the rockets were once stored. Ascend the fixed wooden step ladders to the cabin-like bedrooms in the tower

O

n the outskirts of St Davids near Whitesands, there lies a scenic stone cottage named Drws GobaithWest. The English translation for this, “Door of Hope”, hints to this property’s once notable destination as an important site for pilgrims making their way to St Davids Cathedral. Up until 1538 when banned by King Henry VIII, pilgrimages were one of the most popular pastimes in the UK and in 1123, it was even declared by Pope Callixtus II that two pilgrimages to St Davids were equal with one to Rome. As a result, the UK’s smallest city became a sacred ground for many pilgrims and locations such as the site of this holiday property became significant. Following one of the old pilgrim routes, Drws Gobaith-West was the first point where the Cathedral could be seen thus a Bronze Age standing

88

stone, Maen Dewi, was erected to mark the spot. This can still be seen to the rear of the cottage. The blue stone cottage, built later in 1860, replaced a Ty Unnos - a house built overnight on common ground, granting possession to those who built it (according to an old Welsh tradition). The “one night house” as referred to in English, stands ruined in the garden. With a cosy and comfortable interior, visitors can rest assured they will still enjoy terrific views over the St Davids peninsula with the surrounding grounds here are part of the Dowrog Common Nature Reserve.

HIDE & SEEK ON THE

Think of the water in Pembrokeshire and you’ll most likely conjure up visions of ebbing tides and sandy shores, but there’s a whole undiscovered world waiting to be explored further inland at the secret waterway.

92

H

idden away in the centre of Pembrokeshire county, the Daugleddau Estuary, also referred to as the Cleddau Estuary, snakes through rural countryside and almost time-forgotten neighbourhoods. Once a hive of activity during the coal mining era and the height of the fishing industry, this channel is now a scene of serenity and remains an unexplored location for many.

Stemming at Milford Haven, the mouth of the Irish Sea, this estuary consists of four rivers and reaches as far inland as Haverfordwest via the western river, and Canaston Bridge via the eastern river. Together the two are known as the Daugleddau Estuary and it has two smaller streams which split off on tangents stretching out to Carew and Cresswell Quay.

Known affectionately as the hidden or secret waterway, this body of aquatic habitats is a lesser-known part of this wild Welsh county. Wildlife enthusiasts, artists and photographers will revel in exploring this tranquil part of the world, with its scenic waterside villages, ageold fishing spots and picturesque hamlets overlooking the river. The vista here is so idyllic, it almost feels like it has been lifted from a writer’s imagination. It will inevitably spark inspiration in the creatives who pass through.

Journeying along the waterway, you will travel through Pembroke Dock to marvel at the port which once upon a time produced some 250 ships for industry and war, before reaching the pretty marina lights in Neyland. Continuing further inland takes you through the sleepy villages of Lawrenny, Llangwm and Landshipping - a stretch of the river which was once bustling with local fishermen chasing after a good haul for their wives to sell back on land.

The Daugleddau Estuary as it is known, is home to various river birds and fish including mallards, shelducks, trout and salmon. To get closes to the action, take a paddle and canoe or kayak your way through the waters, stopping off for bird sightings and photo opportunities. The banks of the water are formed by a mixture of muddy borders, grassy embankments, farmland and riverside cottages, so whether your attention is focussed inland or on the water, you’re sure to see some spectacular sights.

Whilst the estuary technically begins at Milford (as this is where the seawater merges with river water), you can easily continue your water-based journey out towards the Irish Sea to explore the splendid coastal location of Herbandston and Sandy Haven.

iving here in Pembrokeshire, we’ve always known our night skies are something special. On clear evenings, the glimmering moon and the glistening stars light up the skyscape creating a truly remarkable and awe-inspiring vision of splendour. Ironically, it is the very lights illuminating the city streets which are said to cloud and obscure these incredible night scenes from view for urbanites. It is large green spaces and coastal environments you’ll find in Pembrokeshire, filled with farmland and dotted with tiny rural hamlets, which make the best viewpoints as there are no intense and dazzling billboards or shop windows. And you don’t just need to take our word for it. In Pembrokeshire, there are eight designated Dark Sky Discovery Sites which are nationally recognised for their world-class views of the night sky. To the north of the region, there’s Sychpant National Park in the Gwaun Valley, Poppit Sands and Garn Fawr near Goodwick. In the west, you have Newgale Beach, Martins Haven and Kete near Dale whilst in the South you can visit Skrinkle Haven and Broadhaven South Beach. Whether you’re hoping to discover the stars for the very first time, are an enthusiastic stargazer or perhaps even a seasoned astronomer; a dark skies holiday to Pembrokeshire is a must for the bucket list. And if you need a little help identifying what’s what or want the lowdown on telescopes, binoculars and astrophotography, our Concierge team can arrange a private experience with a professional to point you in the right direction, just give us a call on 01437 772 758. The in-cottage (or rather, in-cottage-garden) experiences will take you on a dark skies voyage through the history and mythology of celestial objects and the galaxy beyond. Whilst these are currently the only recognised spots, much of Pembrokeshire offers wonderful views of the stars above so wherever you stay, make sure to look up once the sun has set. Browse our hand-picked selection of rural cottages which will have you watching the dark skies every night of your stay.

ne of the main requirements for a night of flawless stargazing is a lack of light pollution. Well, that’s not really an issue in Pembrokeshire with no major cities present. The Old Dairy near Mathry is set in the heart of the Welsh countryside surrounded by hills and farmland, so clear nights here result in astonishing views of the stars. This renovated farm building is one of several barn conversions on a manor house estate in the remote Welsh wilderness and is ideal for nocturnal adventures. The enclosed garden to the rear is an ideal place to set up your telescope and settled down in wait for the sightings of celestial objects. There is plenty of garden furniture to cater for all, so make this a family affair and bring along a couple of telescopes and a few pairs of binoculars for a collective group experience.

To make the most of the dark skies in the area, you can even travel to Garn Fawr near Goodwick and Sychpant National Park in the Gwaun Valley - both are Dark Sky Discovery Sites, designated as top recommended locations for stargazing by the UK Dark Sky Discovery Partnership. Full Property Details

any of our guests book the same cottage to stay in year after year, and have now been staying in that very same cottage for nigh on twenty years. And we don’t blame them! When you find the perfect holiday cottage which suits your needs, it really does become a home away from home. But why settle for a home away from home? Why not make plans to make your favourite holiday cottage your permanent home? Just imagine your own little plot of Welsh land where you can lay your head 365 days a year, where your doggie can roam free from urban life and where you are surrounded by rolling green fields and beautiful blue seas. Specialising in unique and distinct properties throughout Pembrokeshire, you’re sure to find a real gem in Coasty’s portfolio.

You may discover a magnificent beachside property with panoramic sea views, a rural haven in the depths of the stunning Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, or an idyllic renovated farmhouse just moments from the Coast Path. Finding your new home needn’t be a stressful occasion either. Let our friendly and professional team at Coasty help guide you through the process and find the right property which ticks every box. t our heart, we are a local holiday cottage company who have been at the forefront of the self-catering industry for almost 40 years. Pioneering the quality end of the market, plus national and international marketing, Coastal Cottages has gained a reputation that has seen over 70% repeat business every year. Here at Coastal Cottages, our owners are an important part of the family and we’re always keen to extend that family – but we do only take on around 20% of the properties we are offered. First up, we want to stress that we’re not a call centre, nowhere near in fact. We are not in the business of processing visitors, we are quite the opposite. We’re a family-run company with a small team, all of whom live locally so we have a personal connection to the county around us and to what we do. We offer first-hand advice and guidance to guests. We’ve even established a Concierge team who work closely with local businesses to offer a holiday experience like no other. Our owners receive that same personalised advice and reliable service. Our Team schedule regular property visits throughout the year ensuring we get to know our cottages inside-out to give guests that extra level of service. As a future owner who wants to offer the very best, we’ll help you get there, even if that means casting our eye over interior design choices, helping choose the right facilities and giving our opinion when you’re looking for new properties to add to your collection. We’ve learnt that no two properties are the same but luckily for us, no two guests are the same either. That’s why we endeavour to be flexible and personal throughout our service. And clearly, that ethos works. Many of our current collection has been with us since the days when we had only a handful of cottages and a small team back in the early 80s. Nowadays, most of these cottages are owned by the next generation, and we’re delighted they’ve chosen to stay part of the Coastal Cottages family. If you don’t live locally or simply find the daily

At Coastal Cottages, we are the only agency to offer a full management package giving you peace of mind that everything will be dealt with professionally and efficiently on your behalf. With our own team of tradesmen and housekeepers, we can take care of the weekly changeovers and any maintenance needed. We can be as involved as you want us to be, from scheduling your annual PAT tests to making sure the garden is freshly cut, week in week out. Marketing Pembrokeshire is our speciality, and it is all done internally. We have dedicated online, social and press teams which promote nationally and internationally. We also work closely with online travel agents and overseas agents to promote your cottage overseas as well as to the UK market.
