Spring has sprung.
Just as we turned our page on the calendar to say goodbye to March and welcome the 1st of April, we were welcomed by a canopy of sunshine. This year’s April Fools Day was, we hope, an indication of the drier days and warmer weather we can look to enjoying over the next few months.
A new buzz of excitement fills the air as we step through the Easter holidays on our way to the summer and positive energy is palpable all around. With this new spring issue, we bring you ideas on how to spend those summer days you’re counting down towards along with some inspiration on what you can look forward to when visiting Pembrokeshire in May. Being the season everyone wants to get out and explore, we’ve also covered some unmissable sporting events too - appropriate for budding athletes and experienced sportspersons alike.
For those of you who like to explore the world with your furry companion, this is an edition of Coastal Life that you certainly won’t want to miss. We’re celebrating National Pet Month this April with an endless supply of dog friendly tips and recommendations, plus a Win A Paw-liday competition that runs until the end of August.
Turn over a new leaf into a new season with a happy outlook and see overleaf to read about the new additions to our cottage collection. Plus we have some irresistible offers for you too.
Will we see you in Pembrokeshire soon?

SITTIN' ON THE DOCK OF THE MAY
Climbing temperatures and mostly dry days make the fifth month of the year one of the best for a getaway weather-wise. With two bank holiday weekends (plus an EXTRA one in 2023 for the Royal Coronation) and a half term, there really is no better reason why you should plan a May cottage holiday in Wales.
Often we’re blessed with a burst of warm sunny days during this month, so make sure to bring your bathers as you’re likely to want to spend most of your time at the beach. Venture to Nolton Haven where the sheltered cave gives superb conditions for a sea swim or drive out to Freshwater West with your surfboard to ride the waves. Spend evenings grilling up a feast on the barbecue, snacking on chips overlooking one of Tenby’s beautiful beaches or enjoy a picnic at the top of Carn Llidi overlooking Whitesands Beach as the sunsets.
Make sure to pack the car with plenty of shorts and t-shirts (and a waterproof mac just to be safe), buckets and spades, plus of course, some sun cream. These are the kind of days you'll remember for a lifetime.
Mix and match between activity-filled days and relaxing leisure time. Walk the Coast Path, try your hand at watersports and visit the county's adventure parks on your adventurous days then factor in time
for no-rush picnics, a spot of sunbathing and a scenic slow-paced wander to lesser-travelled beaches and coves.
The attractions of a May holiday don’t stop there. This month is peak puffin season so trips to Skomer Island are highly recommended. if you want to land on the island, booking in advance is essential.
Pembrokeshire also hosts some great events during this month. The Tour of Pembrokeshire sees athletes take to the northwestern roads of Pembrokeshire for a Saturday cycle, with several routes and distances available. Food festivals like Haverfoodfest kick off on a weekend in early May whilst music festivals like the annual Fishguard Folk Festival take place towards the late May holiday.
We celebrate the anniversary of our Pembrokeshire Coast Path this month; personally, we'll take any excuse to get out onto the Coast Path and soak up those epic sea views.
There's also Dylan Day on the 13th, an annual celebration of poet Dylan Thomas. This well-known Welsh author is best known for his radio play, Under Milk Wood, and is famous for his time spent living in Laugharne, just across the border from Pembrokeshire.

Its remote location often makes it a quieter spot.
Whitesands Beach is a favourite with surfers, beginners and professionals alike, whilst Freshwater West has become famous for its appearances on the big screen having been used as a location for Hollywood blockbusters such as Harry Potter where Dobby’s Shell House was situated. WALK TO THE BEACH
Falling asleep to the sight of the glistening waves is pretty magical and being able to stroll down to the sand every morning in less than ten minutes, well that really does make for a dream holiday in Pembrokeshire!
Whenplanning a coastal holiday, choosing accommodation within walking distance of the beach has to be the biggest and best treat you can give yourself. There’s no better feeling than waking up to warm sunshine and padding your way down a path straight onto the beach.
Beachside locations set the tone for your holiday; the rhythmic lapping of the waves becomes a soothing soundtrack to your getaway whilst scents of seaweed and salty sea air cast refreshing aromas throughout your days.
Soon enough, leisurely routines form as your days centre around simply being at the beach. Depending on just how close you are, you might find yourself strolling to the beachfront with a cuppa in hand before you prepare for the day ahead. Pack a few sarnies in a bag for a spontaneous picnic or go all out and take a feast; either way, you know it's pretty close to carry however much you pack. And if you forget that vital ingredient? No bother, a quick jaunt back to the house is all it takes.
Holidays are all about great experiences as those are the things that create unforgettable memories, so why waste your time travelling between the beach and your home-
from-home when you can make sure the two are close together? Removing all unnecessary travel from your schedule gives you more time for the things you really want to do - like barbecues on the beach and teaching the little ones how to skim stones.
Sea swimmers, surfers, sunbathers and kayakers all revel in staying within close proximity of the shoreline as after all, who could complain about going from bed to sand in less than five minutes flat? Not us, that’s for sure.
Beaches are so much more than just locations for activities; they are places that can become completely intertwined with some of your best memories, ones you’ll be telling people about for years to come. You’ll never forget the first time your toddler built a sandcastle or the first time you took your beloved pup to see the sea - the confusion of the ever-moving tide on their faces. Perhaps it’ll be a proposal or a specific sunset, perhaps it’ll be the last time you strolled by the shore with your sweetheart.
Whichever cove or inlet you visit, whoever with and whatever you do there; it’s likely that the beach will play a vital role in keeping that treasured memory alive for years to come.

Board a boat trip from St Justinians to cruise out to see the island and all its wildlife up close, the guided walks are recommended.
Known as Ty Ddewi in Welsh, this town-sized holiday destination is famous in more ways than one. Steeped in history, you can sightsee the aforementioned Cathedral where you’ll even find a shrine to our Patron.
Alongside the purple-bricked religious building stands a CADW-protected Bishop’s Palace which traditionally houses touring bishops as they travelled the land in the centuries gone by. Venture out to discover the tranquil coastal spot where Dewi was born at St Non’s Chapel where you can capture a snap of the holy well that allegedly sprang upon his birth.

A whole new perspective on what you think you know of city breaks.

ideal if you’re booking a couple of apartments to suit a larger group travelling together.
All five properties are studio apartments with stylish fitted kitchens in grey and ensuite shower rooms, decorated in a classic clean style. If you’re travelling with your partner, you’ll likely be looking to book St Govan, St Justinian or St Caradog as these three are the ones home to a double bed.
St Govan is somewhat L-shaped in layout around the ensuite and comes complete with a leather brown sofa and quality wooden wardrobe where you can store all your clothing during your stay. St Caradog also features the same style comfortable sofa where you can lounge along with a wooden wardrobe and dining table set. St Caradog is easily set apart from the others in the collection due to its pull-down bed in the centre of the apartment.
St Justinian is also double though unlike all other properties here at Apartments at 53, this is the only one to have its own paved terrace rather than Juliette balcony. French doors from the living space lead out onto the terrace where you can enjoy views across the rooftops towards the towering Carn Llidi nearby. Hedd and St Non are both furnished with twin rooms,
catering for those besties who are travelling the world together ticking items off the bucket list. Hedd has a wooden wardrobe whereas St Non has a trendy clothes rail for hanging all your party garments during your stay. Top times for a “friend-cation” might be during the summer when Shakespeare is performed outdoors in the Bishop’s Palace or when the Edge Festival takes place in the nearby harbour village of Solva.

CAR-Y-MOR
Werecently met up with Meg from Câr-Y-Môr, Wales’ first commercial seaweed and shellfish farm. The Welsh name translates to ‘For the Love of the Sea’, and that’s exactly the impression we got from their dedicated team.
During a walk along the stunning Pembrokeshire coastal path with views of Ramsey Island accompanied by Meg's dog Mali, we learned about everything that makes Câr-Y-Môr a successful and growing ocean farm.
They started in 2019 with an idea that sparked from a conversation. Meg had moved down to Pembrokeshire from Abergavenny after she was done with city life from living in London as a dancer. The conversation drew light on the fact that there were no seaweed farms in Wales. The Welsh coastline covers 1,680 miles so there was plenty of opportunity. Driven by this and the current climate crisis, Câr-Y-Môr was born.
Meg shifted her skills and experience into a new area with the help of her dad who’s a shellfish farmer and her mum who has years of experience being an agricultural accountant. Just from our single visit to the farms, we realised that the more you learn about seaweed farming the more potential you can see. It can help with challenges of food systems, health and declining coastal industries.
They started with two 100m test farms off the St Davids peninsula growing different native seaweed and shellfish species. This allowed them to not only learn the technologies involved in the operation of a successful ocean farm but also allowed them to install a much larger farm to begin operating at a commercial scale. This farm is 3 hectares, the equivalent of 2 football fields!
The farms don’t require a huge amount of maintenance to effectively function. The seaweed itself grows off ropes and requires no fertiliser or food to thrive. A fun fact we learned on our visit was that seaweed is the second fastest-growing plant after bamboo!
They are a community benefit society operating a regenerative ocean farm. Their aim is not only to improve the coastal environment but also to improve the well-being of the local community of Pembrokeshire with food security and sustainable job creation.
Their sites have been largely run by volunteers. They currently have over 200 members and 12 paid members of staff who run the day-to-day. By joining the 200 members that are already on board, you would have equal ownership of the business. How it works is that the members each have 1 vote to support the aims and decisions of the business, and the 12 employees are the core team. Interestingly they work with no hierarchy, so everyone's equal and key decisions are made in their weekly team meetings.
Whilst on our visit, we asked Meg about the challenges they face and whether the local community and fishermen have been for or against their new takeover of seafood farming in Pembrokeshire. But with seaweed being an important ecosystem builder, the local fishermen have been completely on board. The new ocean farms have created underwater gardens where plant life thrives which in turn attracts sea life such as crabs and lobsters. A lot of fishermen have actually started fishing close to the location of the farms as they’re catching a lot in those areas.
Câr-Y-Môr Shop
Althoughnot eaten widely in the UK, seaweed has great potential to contribute towards health and nutrition. Being low in fat they contain a wide spectrum of nutrients.
Their recently new shop based on the outskirts of St Davids stocks some delicious and interesting goodies! Open 7 days a week they sell fresh local seafood on order including crab, mussels, lobster and oysters as well as some products they’ve created using the seaweed they grow.
On our visit to the shop, we spotted a delicious-looking ketchup made of tomatoes, gochujang and sugar kelp. Another interesting find was the seaweed granola made with sugar kelp, orange, quinoa and maple syrup. If eating seaweed isn’t your thing then maybe a seaweed drink could convince you. The orange marmalade and
mango switchel is made with their kombu seaweed. We were told it makes for a delicious seaweed cocktail!
Car Y Mor also has some great innovative products that can be used for cooking, including sea truffle oil which is infused with their hand-harvested pepper dulse. We also spotted some seasonings that add earthy and umami flavours to dishes.
Whilst we were there they mentioned to us their fairly new product, the SeaMôr Bag. Seaweed is apparently really good for your skin! The SeaMôr Bag can be used in baths, releasing oils to help with common skin conditions like psoriasis and eczema.
If you’re holidaying in Pembrokeshire with Coastal Cottages, it’s definitely worth the trip to the Câr-Y-Môr shop near St Davids.
Sustainable farming, the local community and the environment are the core drivers of their work at Câr-Y-Môr.Image By: Ymor Photography Image By: Chalmers Creative

PEMBROKESHIRE
SPORTS EVENTS
Pembrokeshire is the ideal location for outdoor sports and activities with plenty of sporting events taking place. Whether you compete for fun, spectate or are a serious athlete, there is something for everyone.
TheSaundersfoot Triathlon is made up of a 750m swim, a 20K bike ride, and finished with a 5K run. With a mass start on the beach, the athletes head straight to the water with an anti-clockwise swim around the course. This is followed by the bike course, a 1 lap route heading out of the village to Templeton and Ludchurch, circling anti-clockwise back round into Saundersfoot. The event finishes with the run course heading back to the centre of the village for the red carpet finish passing through the short tunnels along the seafront.
This triathlon is the perfect choice if you’re looking for a race with an enclosed stunning sea swim; sea views, and fantastic village support, topped off with one of the most breathtaking scenic runs. The Saundersfoot Triathlon course is simply in one of the best locations in the UK. With its calm, safe and spectator-friendly swim, picturesque ride and fast, flat run.
We recommend getting to Saundersfoot early to make sure you don’t miss out on parking. There are two car parks in the village or there’s one a 10-minute walk away
in Coppet Hall. This is a flat path suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs through the short tunnels and further on is Wisemans Bridge.
The Wisemans Bridge Inn is a particularly good spot to show your support. The pub there serves food and drink with fantastic views of the sea and there’s a great beer garden that welcomes dogs. Here you can watch the cyclists come speeding down the hill and it’s only a short walk from Saundersfoot where you can watch the swim take place. The cycling route for Ironman and Long Course Weekend also passes through Wisemans Bridge so it’s a great spot to show your support at all these events.

Wales Swim, Tenby Holiday Cottages in SaundersfootLONG COURSE WEEKEND
Beginningat the end of June and rolling into July, Long Course Weekend is the biggest multisport event in Europe. Based on the Pembrokeshire Coast in West Wales, the popular event attracts over 12,000 athletes and 36,000 supporters to compete over three incredible days to remember. You can enter 1, 2 or all 3 events over the weekend or you can do half of each!
Kicking off the event on a Friday is The Wales Swim. Competitors of both the 1.2-mile and 2.4-mile swim events all start at North Beach in Tenby, at the same time. Those tackling the full 2.4-mile distance will go on to do a second lap.
This day there is also a children's event, the LCKinder. This is the opening event for Long Course Weekend, where children aged 4-11 can take part in their very own competition tackling a surf run followed by a run across North Beach to the finish line. If your children are budding athletes or sports lovers, then the LCKinder might be ideal, where all children are given a medal after finishing.
The next day will be The Wales Sportive. There are three different distances with 40-mile, 70-mile and 112-mile options for the bike ride, depending on entry level.
Cyclists competing in each of these categories have a staggered start. For those athletes wanting to push their limits with the 112-mile course, they will start first, with the 40-mile competitors leaving last.
The final day of the weekend is The Wales Marathon, a 26.2-mile marathon run, with Half Marathon, 10K and 5K options. Entrants of the full marathon will start and finish the race at Tenby’s Tudor Square, with crowds of supporters cheering them on.
All along the route there are spectators cheering, but a particularly great watch spot is at the finish line where there’s a wild atmosphere on the red carpet with massive crowds showing their support for the athletes. If you get there early enough you can watch the pros run to victory, celebrating with another firework display along with some of the biggest cheers of the whole event. This is followed by the prize ceremony and of course the well-deserved after party!
Long Course Weekend takes place annually in June. For full details, see lcwwales.com
Holiday Cottages For Long Course
Long Course Weekend, TenbyIronman Wales is one of the most famous endurance events in the country, attracting around 2,500 athletes from Pembrokeshire at the beginning of September from all over the world. Athletes test their fitness on the mammoth course in Tenby, which has even earned the name ‘Iron Town’.
The whole three-part course has to be completed within 17 hours. The race starts with a two-loop 2.4-mile sunrise swim at Tenby's famous North Beach. Followed by a gruelling two-loop 112-mile bike course through Pembrokeshire's scenic countryside. Finally, the race finishes with a four-loop 26.2 mile, marathon-length run through Tenby’s buzzing town centre, packed with event supporters.
The fastest athletes will finish the enduring course in around 9 hours. It’s an achievement in itself to complete such an event, but Ironman Wales also serves as a qualifier for the world championships in Hawaii.
Ironman Wales boasts some of the most enthusiastic crowds in endurance sports. It’s certainly worth experiencing once, if only from the sidelines, just for the electric atmosphere it creates.
Kicking off early at North Beach, the athletes start the race at 7 am in the choppy waters of Carmarthen Bay. Crowds of supporters rise early to watch the sunrise and cheer on the athletes, zigzagging up the cliff and along the road just to watch. We recommend getting to Tenby early before the roads close at 8:30 am to guarantee a
parking spot, otherwise, it’ll be a struggle to get there Next is the cycle ride which passes through some of the most beautiful parts of Pembrokeshire. It’s a hilly course, lined with spectators all along the route. Great hotspots for spectators are Narbeth and Carew where the route directly passes through. A particularly good spot to watch from is in Saundersfoot on St Brides Hill which has been given the nickname ‘Heartbreak Hill’ as it’s one of the most intense climbs on the course.
Competitors finish with the 4-lap marathon run through the cobbled streets of Tenby to New Hedges and back. Like the cycle, it’s a hilly course but the cheering crowds definitely help. A great watch spot if you’re not one for large crowds is in New Hedges or the top of Saunderfoot where people line the pavements cheering on the athletes as they pass by. For electric atmosphere, anywhere in Tenby is a great spot to watch from, but the finish line, in particular, creates a buzz with the music blaring and large crowds cheering.
Whether you’re a participant or a spectator, it’s worth sticking around Tenby for the great post-race atmosphere. With three stunning sandy beaches and pastel-coloured houses rising up from a picturesque harbour, Tenby has plenty to offer – and makes the perfect base to explore Pembrokeshire.

ON THE COAST
Manyof our guests book the same cottage to stay in year after year, and have now been staying in that very same cottage for nigh on twenty years. And we don’t blame them! When you find the perfect holiday cottage which suits your needs, it really does become a home away from home.
But why settle for a home away from home? Why not make plans to make your favourite holiday cottage your permanent home?
Of course, we can’t guarantee everyone’s favourite holiday home will one day be up for sale, but can promise to help you find your own piece of Pembrokeshire. Just imagine your own little plot of Welsh land where you can lay your head 365 days a year, where your doggie can roam free from urban life and where you are surrounded by rolling green fields and beautiful blue seas.
After years and years of our guests saying to us, “let us know if the owner decides to sell”, about their favourite cottages, we set up our real estate sister company, Coasty. Specialising in unique and distinct properties throughout Pembrokeshire, you’re sure to find a real gem in Coasty’s portfolio.
You may discover a magnificent beachside property with panoramic sea views, a rural haven in the depths of the stunning Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, or an idyllic renovated farmhouse just moments from the Coast Path.
Finding your new home needn’t be a stressful occasion either. Let our friendly and professional team at Coasty help guide you through the process and find the right property which ticks every box. Whether that be a convenient village location, must-have water views, a remote setting or ample parking with room to store your boat - just let us know.
Don’t forget, we can also let your new house for you when you’re not staying there. After all, a little extra spending money always comes in handy right?
JOIN THE FAMILY
At our heart, we are a local holiday cottage company who have been at the forefront of the self-catering industry for almost 40 years. Pioneering the quality end of the market, plus national and international marketing, Coastal Cottages has gained a reputation that has seen over 70% repeat business every year.
Here at Coastal Cottages, our owners are an important part of the family and we’re always keen to extend that family – but we do only take on around 20% of the properties we are offered.
First up, we want to stress that we’re not a call centre, nowhere near in fact. We are not in the business of processing visitors, we are quite the opposite. We’re a family-run company with a small team, all of whom live locally so we have a personal connection to the county around us and to what we do.
We offer first-hand advice and guidance to guests. We’ve even established a Concierge team who work closely with local businesses to offer a holiday experience like no other.
Our owners receive that same personalised advice and reliable service. Our Team schedule regular property visits throughout the year ensuring we get to know our cottages inside-out to give guests that extra level of service.
As a future owner who wants to offer the very best, we’ll help you get there, even if that means casting our eye over interior design choices, helping choose the right facilities and giving our opinion when you’re looking for new properties to add to your collection.
We’ve learnt that no two properties are the same but luckily for us, no two guests are the same either. That’s why we endeavour to be flexible and personal throughout our service. And clearly, that ethos works. Many of our current collection has been with us since the days when we had only a handful of cottages and a small team back in the early 80s. Nowadays, most of these cottages are owned by the next generation, and we’re delighted they’ve chosen to stay part of the Coastal Cottages family.
If you don’t live locally or simply find the daily
running of your cottage too overwhelming, sit back and let us handle it. At Coastal Cottages, we are the only agency to offer a full management package giving you peace of mind that everything will be dealt with professionally and efficiently on your behalf. With our own team of tradesmen and housekeepers, we can take care of the weekly changeovers and any maintenance needed. We can be as involved as you want us to be, from scheduling your annual PAT tests to making sure the garden is freshly cut, week in week out.
Marketing Pembrokeshire is our speciality, and it is all done internally. We have dedicated online, social and press teams which promote nationally and internationally. We also work closely with online travel agents and overseas agents to promote your cottage overseas as well as to the UK market.
The bottom line is we go the extra mile because we can; we live here, we care and would be delighted to talk through your next adventure, so give us a call on 01437 765 765
